Abortion Funding Debate at UTS

by Peter Duveen-UTS

The student body of the Unification Theological Seminary held the 14th of its annual debates in October, with the victory going to the second year students, or "Middlers," who were pitted against a team of entering students, or Juniors. The Middler team will go on to compete against Divinity Seniors in another debate next semester.

The topic of the debate was, "There should be no federal funding for clinics that provide abortions."

UTS President Dr. Theodore Shimmyo introduced the two teams, the first headed by Jin Goon Kim, second generation Korean and Student Body President, and supported by Junior president and two-time debate veteran Bret Moss of the United States, and UTS student Andrew Tribe of Great Britain.

The Junior team was comprised of Peter Duveen of the United States, Harold Ishii from Japan, and Celso Talaba from the Philippines, and was supported by an advisory staff including Mark Snell and Naomi Ikegami.

The Middlers argued that abortion was equivalent to murder, and that it encouraged immorality, and should therefore not be funded. They expressed disappointment with the debate topic, since, if strictly interpreted, it would mean that their side must be opposed to abortion even in the difficult cases such as those where the mother's life was endangered. They tried to change the position they were defending early on in the debate by saying that the real issue was the vast majority of "on demand" abortions, thus excluding difficult cases they admitted should be funded.

Juniors argued that abortion should be eliminated through moral reformation of society, rather than by cutting off federal funding, which could jeopardize those special cases in which an abortion may be necessary or justified. The Juniors also opposed laws restricting abortion on grounds that the mother should have autonomy over her own body, and that the child, which lacked autonomy, was not yet "alive." Furthermore, since the law permitted abortion, there was no justification to place abortion off limits to federal funding, the Juniors argued.

The Junior team suggested that the Middlers, by admitting that some cases of abortion should be eligible for federal funding, contrary to the position they were to defend, had already conceded defeat. This point, however, did not weigh heavily in the judges' deliberations, besides which the debate is graded on a number of factors, of which only a portion is devoted to argumentation.

Each team member is allowed 4 minutes, one of which must be used to rebut the argument of the other side. One person on each team gives a summation for three minutes at the conclusion of the debate.

A question and answer period followed, during which time the judges, Korean instructors Mr. and Mrs. Hyun Kwang and Yasuko Kim, Seminary graduate Katherine Bradley, and UTS Public Affairs Director Sarah Witt, met separately to select the winning team. President Shimmyo announced the judges' decision to an audience of about 50 UTS students and staff.

A Plea to All Who Staffed the Baltic and Crimean Seminars

by James and Megan Smith-Riga, Latvia

This past summer marked the beginning of the fourth year of our work in the former USSR, since that historic summer of 1991 in the Baltic ILS seminars. It has been my great blessing to have been involved with those first summer seminars, as well as the subsequent seminars in the Crimea and then again in the Baltics during the summer of '92, when we educated over 18,000 students, teachers and pupils!

Ahhh, the euphoria, as anyone who was involved can recall. It was the greatest harvest of all time. It was a rapture of thousands of people into the love and truth of God and True Parents. Who can forget the sense of hope and awe at the phenomena of those great seminars? One could say that the last days were truly at hand!

Since then, the seminars are smaller and regionally organized, though no less rapturous and inspiring. But for those of you who participated as staff in those first seminars, an obvious question would be, "What ever happened to those hundreds of young children we educated and cared for?" That question has gone through the minds of every member who worked in those seminars, and though I may not be the most qualified person to say for certain, I can share what I have witnessed in working here since that time.

As with everything, we can fairly judge something by considering both the internal and the external. The same applies to the results of those first seminars. From an internal viewpoint, the seminars can be counted as a total victory. The sheer number of people who participated created the momentum to push our work to levels unimagined by any of us. Most notable is the curriculum project. Within a few months following the summer seminars of '92 we were holding conferences with high-level education representatives from each republic about the creation of a curriculum on morals and values. Today virtually thousands of pupils are studying the course "My World and I," which derives most of its ideas directly from the Principle. The broad base of support is an unshakable foundation for our work in the CIS and Baltics, and it all began with our labor of love during those wonderful seminars. The seeds that were planted in those short summer and winter months will surely bear great fruits in the years to come.

Yet there is another result from those seminars, a result that no one wishes to answer for or even openly discuss. For the fact is that only a fraction of all those thousands of participants went on to become members. The percentage is so small that one can't help but counting it as a phenomenon of a different kind. Why didn't more of them go on? What became of the inspiration and zeal that so many of them caught during their short time with us? Again, I speak for myself, though I find that my conclusion is in accordance with the views of others who also saw the whole providence unfold.

The key to witnessing to the Principle and to True Parents goes back to the fundamental key of how most of us joined; a single person, or a close group of people, who cared for us and raised us up as a mother nurses her newborn baby. The fact is that it is only in the extraordinary cases that a person receives Principle, determines that it is the truth, and then dedicates themselves to it. Most people go through a long deliverance of struggles and spiritual battles before they able to give themselves to God's will. And it is in that period that you, the spiritual parent, are most urgently needed. It is unfortunate but obvious to observe that in most cases, that person, that precious single connection to True Parents' love, was not there for these children. A great chance was missed for our movement, both for the CIS and for America. There were hundreds of spiritual babies, crying out for love and guidance, yet there was no one to answer their call. It is a sad story and it was repeated all over these republics.

I am calling this to your attention for an important reason, in that it is not too late. Each of you who were over here know what I am talking about. There is a person, or a number of people, who were bonded to you in a special way, who looked to you as a child looks to its parent. Did you nurture that bond? Have you written them over the years and encouraged them and counseled them in their difficulties? I have seen how much a letter means to them. A simple letter that shows you care. Don't send money or extravagant gifts; believe me, it sends the wrong message. But a family photo, a spiritual book, something to give them life-that is what they need. It's not too late, and with Christmas and God's Day coming up you have a good excuse to open a line that has for too long been shut!

There is another thing you can do, an action that would carry you to a great new level in your own life and in the lives of those people you will touch. The work here has but one limit to its potential in bringing new members in the shortest span of time. There is only one thing blocking God from working, and that is that He has so few people to work through. These new members need True Parents' representatives! There is no greater calling than this-to stand in the position of True Parents' representatives to a community of young believers. Yet because so few people have heeded the calling, our work is suffering greatly. How many of you who had served here during those seminars were called by God to come back, if even for a time period? Yet so very few every followed through. Oh, the harvest is so great, yet the workers are so few! I beg of you, please consider it again. These children are waiting, and they need parents so badly. And what's more, the foundation has been prepared like never before.

My wife and I have worked as the leaders in Riga, Latvia over the past two years. I am far from being a great leader, I've never been to seminary, my wife delivered our three daughters here in a Latvian hospital (which was practically free), we have many limitations, and yet in this time we have raised up a foundation of ten pledging members, half of whom will partake in next year's Blessing. We have introduced hundreds of pupils to the curriculum course, we have a constant Sunday service community of 30 people and many others who are sympathetic to our cause. We have learned more in these past two years than in all the years combined of our time in the Church. But now we are in a position where we must return to America, leaving our spiritual children like orphans because there is no one else to take our place.

I pray that this letter is read by all the people who were involved in this CIS/Baltic providence, and that each of you can consider deeply how you can continue in the investment you so honorably made to these precious children of God and True Parents. If you feel at all called to help our work, don't hesitate to contact us: James and Megan Smith, Staiceles 11/29, Riga, Latvia LV1084.

12 Anniversary of 8000 Couples in DC

by William Selig-Washington, DC

The 8000 Blessed Couples of the Washington, DC, metro area celebrated their 12th anniversary on the evening of October 15 at New Hope Academy in Landover Hills, Maryland. More than 100 brothers and sisters gathered for the occasion. Dr. and Mrs. Hugh Spurgin spoke on the topic "Blessed Family Life in the Completed Testament Age."

Organized by the 8000 BFA of Washington, DC, the event marked the 12th anniversary of those couples blessed either at Madison Square Garden (July 1, 1982) or at Chamshil Gymnasium in Seoul (October 14, 1982). There are 214 families from the 8000 Blessing in the DC metro area.

Dr. Spurgin spoke about the process of preparing our children for independence and shared reminiscences of their daughter's matching and Blessing in 1992. He compared our experience as parents, giving our children increasing responsibilities and trusting them to fulfill them, with True Father's increasing trust and reliance upon us.

Mrs. Norah Spurgin emphasized the importance of our children building deep relationshops with other blessed children. She said she organized summer camp and other means of bringing blessed children together to form bonds that will fortify and protect them as they enter the adult world.

Two gifts were prepared for each couple attending the celebration. One was a small book of speeches by True Father, Hyo Jin Nim, In Jin Nim, and James Baughman on the topic of the Blessing. The other is a directory of the 8000 couples in the DC metro area. The metro area chaircouples (William and Donna Selig, Paul and Jutta Tobkin, Mehrdad and Anna Mizani, and Robert and Diane Abendroth) prepared and conducted a survey and entered all the information into a database. The directory includes all the blessed children's names and birthdates and several charts showing our "growth" curve. There are 502 blessed children in the DC metro area.

The focus of the evening was internal rededication. All the couples recited our wedding vows and sang "Song of the Banquet." Local brothers and sisters--Otmar Weinman, Patsy Casino, Antonio Betancourt, and Fran Ichijo--offered a beautiful variety of songs. Carlos Betancourt prepared a sumptuous dinner that was enjoyed by all. Door prizes included a 13-inch color television and 50 grams of ginseng extract. The grand prizes were two large framed photos of True Parents (donated by Ken Owens of New Future Films). Larry Moffitt was the master of ceremonies. Letters of congratulations were sent by Ambassador and Mrs. Philip Sanchez and Dr. and Mrs. Bo Hi Pak.

At the seventh celebration of our Blessing, President Baughman said, "The BFA is not a formal organization. It is more accurately defined as an informal gathering of brothers and sisters where we can support each other in a horizontal way. In other words, it is not the same as the church hierarchy. The association is very important to understand because it doesn't matter what position one holds in the church--president, state leader, fundraiser--we are all equal in this association. We share similar concerns and the need to support one another."

At the same event, Hyo Jin Nim described the Blessing as "the beginning point of the Kingdom of Heaven. In other words, when we go to the spirit world, we will not go there because of some record or external achievement, but because of our Blessing. The key will be our blood lineage with the True Parents. That will be the connection that we will have to Heavenly Father when we go to spirit world."

12 Korean Regional Leaders in UTS

by Dr. Jin Choon Kim-UTS

Rev. Young Suk Song is the team leader of 12 Korean regional leaders currently studying at. UTS. This is his basic prayer in English at their morning meeting: "Good afternoon, Heavenly Father, True Parents, harmony, together, Amen." It has been more than 30 years since he studied English at high school but his extremely simple yet profound prayer reminds us of the sorrowful and painful heart of Heavenly Father and True Parents.

In this prayer still we can find an essential message: By attending ("Good afternoon") God the Heavenly Father ("Heavenly Father") and the Lord of Second Advent ("True Parents"), let us make an ideal world ("Harmony") through working together ("together").

When Father called Korean regional leaders at Hannamdong (Korean East Garden) this year, nobody was able to read what was going on in Father's mind. Father explained about the significance of UTS and their study at UTS. Some of them were shocked and other might have been excited. By various ways Father chose 11 candidates among them. Later, Father called Rev. Pyung Lae Moon, 52 years old (430 couple) and the eldest among 12 leaders, and Rev. Song, 51 years old (430 couple) and the second eldest, to Father's room and asked whether they could study at UTS in English. Their answer was "Yes, Father." They offered their majority times of 30 years to the God's providence and True Parents' ceaseless desperation, as pioneering ministers and especially 16 years (Rev. Moon) and 10 years (Rev. Song) as regional directors. Never did they think about their English and family! Simply they wanted to follow Father's idea and order. This was their founding faith for the Father's new plan.

Here are those 12 former Korean regional leaders: Pyung Lae Moon & Young Suk Song (430), Heung Tae Kim & Dong Suk Ku (1800), Chang Shik Yang, Chi Joong Kim, Sun Jo Hwang, Hae Chull Jung & Dong Woo Kim (6000), Won Seok Kang, In Hoe Lee & Man Ho Kim (6500). Mr. Sang Sun Park (6000) couldn't join this group of 12 leaders because of VISA situation but might come on Winter trimester. They all have exemplary faith and strong commitment to fulfill Father's new plan. Their family situation and the possible difficulty of studying in UTS with English were not strong enough to stop their devoted determination. This level of faith do we need, I'm sure, to have in this True Parents and Completed Testament Age in order to march forward the millennium coming soon.

With such a short notice, they managed to have a warming-up to wake up their latent English for one month or so. Although they were near being knocked down and going back to Korea at the immigration office in Alaska, Heavenly Father didn't let them become victims of secular fallen system. As a matter of fact, there were full of TOEFL books in their tourist bags! Who on earth carry tourist bags full of TOEFL books! But to them without passing TOEFL exam, they will not be able to register as students of UTS.

When their arriving at Kodiak on August 10, the beautiful heavenly treasury of Alaska, an intensive 10-day training program by True Parents has been waited for them. Six pink salmons, three silver salmons, and one hundred pound halibuts per day were individual goal in fishing. To fulfill this goal they must wake up 5:30 a.m. every day and challenge themselves all day long, coming back exhausted. Father explained about the significance of their study at UTS, saying "You are the representatives of those members who had to give up their study at college and instead go to the front line for the sake of Heavenly Father's urgent providence in 1960s. Now after 40-year anniversary of HSA-UWC, we are able to stand in different providential stage and resolve their cherished desire of study. When you become students, you must show good example and establish a good tradition in UTS. You must graduate UTS within two and half years. After you graduate I will assign you as leaders educating members of six continents. But some of you may run away from UTS while you are studying."

While they are being trained by True Parents at Kodiak, Mr. Peter Kim worked hard in many aspects to prepare for them because of True Parents' special concerns. In UTS also, President Dr. Shimmyo, in order to unite with True Parents ' idea, pushed himself and his staff to prepare for receiving them internally and externally. Since Father visited UTS this spring and changed administration, all UTS community of faculty, staff, and students have been busy to grasp what is the Father's true intention about UTS in this age of Completed Testament which is different from before. When we heard for the first time that Hyo Jin Nim decided to come UTS for study, we all were very excited. That excitement was mingled with the news about coming of these 12 new Korean former regional leaders and made a new spiritual atmosphere.

The difficulties, which they must face gradually, welcomed them with diverse tastes. First of all, the main difficulty of English challenged them severely. Among the five physical senses, the four senses which are related with listening, speaking, reading, and writing got paralyzed in communication with English speaking people. When they were in Korea, their position of regional leader never let those senses paralyzed. The new culture and life pattern of America and western world are another challenging factor. Their family situations were also not easy matters. Nevertheless, they are challenging themselves to be accustomed to a new atmosphere as soon as possible and at the same time to keep Father's direction as long as possible.

They greeted and reported to Hyo Jin Nim at East Garden and Hyo Jin Nim invited them at Manhattan Center. True Mother invited them at East Garden for True Family's birthday and Deer Park. True Parents invited them at East Garden when True Parents celebrated Ch'us'k (Korean thanksgiving day). President Shimmyo, Dean of administration Dr. W. Brunhofer, and academic dean Dr. J. Tanabe had lunch together with them. They know what these signify and what their proper attitude is. Whenever they have difficulties, each one of them would generate a fresh determination by recollecting Father's warning "Some of you may run away from UTS while you are studying." President Shimmyo and Mr. Peter Kim initiated organizing study groups for listening & speaking and grammar. I sincerely hope that they could express their enthusiastic heart fluently in English when they graduate UTS and go to the world.

As a witness and helper of them, I can testify a vivid transition of UTS to a new mission and stage centered on True Family and these new Korean elder students. As Father stressed, they are trying to contribute something in establishing a heavenly tradition in UTS. President Shimmyo asked them to give morning service at the first day pledge of each month. Already Rev. Moon on October 1 and Rev. Song on November 1 gave speechs to UTS students that had a great impact.

I want to finish this short reflection with some of Father's words that Father gave to them at Kodiak during 10-day training.

* If a man loses time (or chance), he will die on his way even before he goes over the top of the mountain.

* There is no victory where we didn't overcome. A person who overcame will become a victor and lead human history.

* Overcoming and victory are in the same shoes.

* The champion will be the person who overcomes to the last moment.

* If you want to be the owner of ocean, you must devote to ocean more than any other.

* Overcoming will participate in victory.

* The only person who has overcome will be the owner of next generation and gain victory.

* Be a person who can cross the deadline.

* There will always happen certain problems until the end.

* The responsible person can not eat when he wants and can not sleep when he wants.

* There will not be any development until you overcome.

* The person who comes as the owner of love is the messiah.

* The restoration of essence means reassembling of what assembled in the wrong.

* Only when you can have dominion over atmosphere, you can become the owner.

* You can't go the way of restoration with debt.

* If you don't know, you'll be a prey of Satan.

* If you inherit anything without your efforts, it will flow away.

* You must be wiser than Satan.

* Aspire to die completely in the death camp.

* If you die in your home, you can't participate in the list of patriots.

* To make efforts is important.

* To be able to command English fluently in old age gray-haired is a wonderful tradition.

* The person who has lived for the sake of other will not perish.

* If anything doesn't perish and keeps doing well, it will go to the central position.

* If you are more sincere when you are hungry and sleepy, heaven will cooperate with you.

* Studying is a lonely time.

* Look at a distant mountain once a day to uphold the hope of future.

"Then There Was Silence"

(In Memory of My Sister, Toni)

It was the 23rd of August, 1994 when my dear sister passed away.

I was in shock when I found out. Afterward I had very little to say.

Because my mind began to race back to the childhood games that we once played.

To the sound of our mother calling...

Then there was silence!!!!!

I couldn't stop my mind from racing on...to the time when my sister was chosen to play on a girls' softball team called the Blue Birds.

When her time came up to bat, while Mother and I in the bleachers sat,

Sometimes the crowd would go wild after Toni made a hit,

Shouting "Run, Toni, Run." She'd get up covered with dust,

After sliding into home base, she'd look up at us and smile...

Then there was silence!!!!!

Then when America declared war, she joined the women's army...

Was honorably discharged.... Now among some of the other veterans of her country,

She lay in Calverton National Cemetery...

Then there was silence!!!!!

We buried her today, August 31st...

As I turned my back and walked away...

I will always remember her beauty and that smile upon her face....

Spiritually I could see the angels beckoning to her, as she was walking towards them to receive their welcome embrace...

I saw them wrap their arms around her and took her up in space...

I looked up and blew her a final kiss...

Then there was silence!!!!!

World CARP Activities Launched

by Michael Balcomb-NYC

Students from the CIS have arrived in the United States to begin work as representatives of the Unification Church in a joint project with World CARP. This new program is designed to expand outreach activities to young people and particularly students throughout the country. These students from the CIS are the first of successive groups to come to America to share their religious experiences and to demonstrate their commitment to join with other young people around the world in making a meaningful contribution to their respective societies and then world community.

A long time ago, Rev. Moon predicted that one day young people from former communist countries would come here to Christian America to engage in activities like this. But who would have thought it could be so soon?

A New Beginning:

Over 150 CARP and Unification Church members gathered September 2 - 4 for a "Kick-off" seminar at Camp Sunrise in upstate New York hoping to generate the momentum for this endeavor. A distinct feature of the seminar was the presence of adult children of elder Unification Church members.

The participants seemed inspired enough as they listened to speeches by World CARP Vice Presidents Jin Hun Park Moon and Sung Am Moon, danced to the sound of the Ancestors, hiked on the Appalachian trail, played volleyball, chatted with old and new friends, or simply took some quiet time with God.

By the end of the weekend, six teams of enthusiastic volunteers had been formed and they set out for Boston, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco-the first cities chosen for the new project.

Arriving in those cities the following day, they found the local church community in a state of keen anticipation to support their efforts to renew the spirit and social commitment of young people to take responsibility in the face of increasing challenges. In Boston, many families had gathered together to sponsor the new arrivals; in Washington D.C. a large stock of bunk beds and mattresses was on hand (practical people, those Washingtonians) In Los Angeles and San Francisco, mini-workshops were held to brief those who had been unable to make the long journey to New York. And so, the activities began.

A New Campaign for the CTA

We have all heard many times that this is the Completed Testament Age. But what does that really mean? It means we are on the verge of the greatest transformation the world has even seen! And this new project can help that great change to happen.

Think about it. All the old models of life, all the old ideologies, are dead or dying. Communism has expired. Apartheid is over. Israel and the PLO have made peace. Only this month the IRA pledged to stop the killing in Northern Ireland.

Yet despite all this good news, our world is still in big trouble. Wars, famine and disease still kill millions every year. Regional and tribal conflicts have broken out all over the place, with horrifying consequences. And the wealthy nations are tired of trying in vain to solve the problems of the world with a checkbook. In a recent interview in Time the Secretary General of the UN admitted that he had "no solution" to the rising tide of violence.

Sometimes, looking at the big picture like this, it's easy to get depressed and feel that nothing any of us can do can make any lasting difference. But that is not true! In the midst of all this chaos and confusion, a new age has begun. As True Parents, Rev. and Mrs. Moon have proclaimed the historical opportunity for world peace that now exists and have announced a time of great blessing for all humanity. They desire to bestow the Blessing, the central sacrament of the Unification Church, to everyone in the belief that through the establishment of dedicated God-centered families, true peace can be realized. In this regard, they plan to invite more than 360,000 couples to receive the Blessing in August of 1995.

According to Vice President Jin Hun Park Moon, the "all or nothing" approach so typical of religious proselytization, including that of the Unification Church, is no longer realistic today. "Times have changed." he says. "The most important change is the fact that in the Completed Testament Age, God is ready and willing, even anxious, to give His blessings to everyone, whether they are a member of our church or not. The only qualifications are that they appreciate True Parents and promise to be faithful in their marriage."

Yet, he points out, this is not a mandate to be weak or wishy-washy in one's faith or in one's witness. On the contrary, we should be robust advocates of the Divine Principle and fearless and outspoken spokesmen and spokeswomen for our True Parents.

World CARP's Outreach Strategy

But we do need a new strategy for our outreach to young people. Nowadays young people demand an attractive alternative to the excessively materialistic culture of the 1990s; but one that invites them to transform that society, not to abandon it. Students and all young people desire a tradition that can guide human relationships and that will endure for decades, centuries and even millennia.

It will always be especially important for young people to learn how to make God's way of life their own. For most, college or the first job is the first opportunity for them to stand on their own two feet and to assert themselves. A time, when they are challenged to apply whatever moral and ethical education they have received and to follow their own conscience in how they choose to live their lives. Consciences always need training and exercise just as our physical bodies always need to be maintained through a regular fitness program.

For that to happen, there must be a training ground. Young adults are hungry for that important character training that will serve them in good stead for their entire life. The programs sponsored by World CARP are designed to meet this need,

Says Sung Am Moon, "We want to present a tradition that is worthwhile, yet easy to follow. Wouldn't it be beautiful if every young adult, as a matter of course, were to dedicate even one year of their life to serving the world? How different everything would be!"

World CARP seminars will provide for a working knowledge of Divine Principle as fundamental to such training. No one can really know themselves, far less know God, without really understanding the contents of Divine Principle. It is worth remembering that Rev. Moon himself was a student when he first discovered the Principle.

However, far more important than any theoretical knowledge is the ability to put it into practice. Most of us find it much easier to put difficult or challenging ideas into practice, particularly if they involve self change, if we know that we are not solitary travelers down the road.

Projects of World CARP

One of the first projects of World CARP has been the production of a new audiovisual presentation entitled "Higher Love." This fifteen minute program is an illustrated paraphrase of the proclamation speech by Rev. and Mrs. Moon "True Parents and the Completed Testament Age." The theology is simplified, and lively music and pictures help keep the show moving, but the message is essentially the same. A New Age is here; and we are all called to be a part of it. Early reports are that people are excited and curious.

The teams are also using a new generation of literature and tracts, with the emphasis very much on education and personal decision. From a contemplation of the existence of angels and the afterlife to an analysis of the true nature of freedom and spiritual growth, the reader is invited to make up his or her own mind.

In the various cities where World CARP representatives have begun working open house meetings are being promoted every weekday evening. Many of these programs address "Hot Topics" on campuses today, ranging from issues such as homosexuality, free sex and AIDS, religious topics such as the existence of the Spiritual World, and social issues such as family breakdown. Of course, presentations on the Divine Principle, represent an important contribution, one which stands on its own merits.

We want people to study the Principle more than anything else. But the desire to do so has to come from within as young people contend with developing a comprehensive understanding of themselves, human relations, history, the future, and of course, God. And if they see others happy and successful by living according to the Principle, they're going to want to pursue it too. In the past, the urgency of God's providence meant that individuals may have felt compelled to set-aside their education or their immediate career prospects to follow a religious vocation. But thanks to the benefits of the age, people today can serve God much more broadly.

That's why those encountering the activities of World CARP are advised to stay in school or remain in their current career. The hope however is that with a new-found sense of responsibility for the world around them they can be effective in living for others and exemplifying a new and healthy lifestyle.

Thus the goal of World CARP is just as much about education as providing the opportunity for genuine religious conversion. We want to provide the practical means by which young people from every background can be encouraged to work together to influence and to change their society. Everything we do may have one of two valid purposes. Education. Example.

That is why members of World CARP are setting aside time every week to participate in voluntary community service of various kinds, from charitable collections to tutoring, food banks to ocean training. And the students and young people the team meets are being encouraged to do the same, whether or not they decide to pursue the religious tenets of the Unification Church.

"This is a great experiment," says Jin Hun Park Moon. "Together, we will make it work!"
