Why do you need True Parents? It is in order to receive the new lineage. The Old Testament Age was the age of the foundation of faith, the New Testament Age was the age of the foundation of substance, and the Completed Testament Age is the age of the new ideal. Hence, it is said that it is in the age of love where we should inherit the good lineage of the heavenly kingdom. Until now we had different blood. We inherited mixed blood.

I have inherited the original, traditional blood and so I am fighting with Satan with knowledge of all this truth. I am doing this because I know such things.

True Parents are the new bud of the true olive tree. You should cut yourself off and be engrafted with the bud of the True Parents, The Parents' bud and God's bud must be engrafted. Then, your body may be cut down to nothing, but your thought becomes the same as that of God and True Parents. You will be able to give birth to the same fruit -- sons and daughters of goodness. This cannot happen in the satanic world. It is not good to have sons and daughters before this happens. (125-208, 1983.3.20)

Bequeathing True Parents' Heart

Sun Myung Moon
March 20, 1983

SunMyungMoon-830320-1.png

How will you deeply experience True Parents' heart and God's love and heart? This is the issue. The question is how to enter that state. For this you have to become the Adam and Eve who have not fallen, free from Satan's accusation. How, then, will you become liberated from the satanic world? You have to win in the battle with Satan. To achieve this, how hard will you have to work and how much will you have to suffer? Jacob and Moses were each deceived ten times. Jesus Christ was also deceived in the same manner. It was the same with me. We must overcome this. We will come to know God's heart through this. We will come to know the Parents' heart. Otherwise, we will never know. Without this experience, Satan will never leave you alone. As long as you do not triumph over Satan, you will never be able to know True Parents' heart or God's heart.

Thus we must go to the front line. Everyone must go to the front line. As long as we do not do this but, instead, live a comfortable life, we will not be able to find God's love, the Parent's love, the Parent's realm of heart, or God's realm of heart. I must send everyone to the front line. You need to be persecuted, despised and beaten, and receive all sorts of harsh treatment. Only then can there be an inheritance of heart. A ceremony of inheritance will take place there. You must therefore always stand at the forefront and march forward like me. How harsh the persecution is on the front line! But this is natural. When you digest it, God will protect you. You will be able to deeply experience the same heart as you stand in the same place. The question is how to experience this heart deeply. The question is how you can come to know that True Parents are the real True Parents and that God is your Father. How will your bones and flesh know? The question is whether those cells, that body of flesh, know it even when you are not thinking. You must overcome the situation of being exposed to Satan's accusation. This is the biggest problem.

The question is how to experience True Parents' love deeply, but it is simple. You must be able to stand in a position like that of the original Adam and Eve, who have defeated Satan on the global stage. To achieve this, how much blood and sweat you will have to shed, and how much accusation you will receive from Satan! How hard it will be, because it can happen only after you have triumphed over the course of indemnity! If you do not appreciate being in that situation, then it will not matter how hard you pray or what you do, you will not be able to go beyond it. You have to experience it deeply yourself. You will experience it deeply immediately upon entering into such a situation. You will receive direct guidance. In understanding the Parents' heart, the great problem is how to feel what is called oneness. It will never happen until you have defeated Satan. It will not come. Power transmission towers have been established. They have been erected in individuals, families, tribes, peoples, nations, the world, the cosmos, and even in God. Now the power lines of heart must be hung there. Who will hang them? It is not I or God, but you who must do it.

Media Credibility and Social Responsibility

Honorable chairman, distinguished co-chairmen, ladies and gentlemen:

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the seventh World Media Conference here in Tokyo, Japan. I am sorry I cannot be in Tokyo to welcome you in person. However, please be assured that my spirit is with you.

I hold the Japanese people and their nation in the highest esteem. They are setting a standard of excellence in the modern world. I am sure that everyone can learn a great deal from this Asian nation, which has achieved an economic miracle in our time and has become one of the great powers of the world.

As members of the electronic and print media, you represent the most powerful, influential and select group on the face of the earth today. In contrast to every other comparable profession in the world, most free nations have very few laws governing the conduct of the media -- and that's good.

People who are blessed to live in freedom know that a free press can be the strongest deterrent to dictatorship. More than political, economic or academic measures, the impact of the press is the most immediate on our society. This is certainly the belief of the World Media Association. But when there is little outside control, the only person standing between yourself and the abuse of your power is you.

Freedom is indeed one of the most precious gifts of the Creator. Human beings are created to be free spiritual beings, but when God created human beings free, He also gave them responsibility. Freedom requires self-discipline and self-control.

Freedom is bound by law. There are natural physical and spiritual laws at work in the universe and they are the ultimate limits of freedom. You are free to go to the top of the New Otani Hotel and jump off. That is your freedom, but your free act will bring your own destruction because you are going against the laws of nature. You are free to go into the ocean and breathe water instead of air, but the laws of nature will again be operating. Your lungs cannot bear it, and your life will be destroyed. No one can dispute this fact.

Spiritual laws, however, are not so obvious, yet they are as absolute as the laws of nature. To recognize spiritual law, we must recognize human beings as spiritual beings, created by God, the first spiritual Being in the universe.

God alone, being the Creator, determines the purpose of creation and sets the spiritual law. All value begins with God. God has already determined the purpose of human life and how human beings can fulfill that purpose. This is the foundation of absolute value. From this absolute value foundation, moral principles emerge and these moral principles comprise the spiritual law.

Human beings, created as spiritual beings, are bound by this spiritual law. We are here on earth to fulfill the fundamental human purpose as determined by the Creator. Our spiritual well-being is served as we fulfill our individual purpose in accordance with the moral law established by God. When we violate this law, we invite self-destruction, just as we do when we violate the laws of nature.

All of us, before we are journalists or any other kind of professional, are first human beings. The first responsibility of a human being is to exercise freedom in accord with basic moral principles. For the journalist, freedom of the press must be exercised according to certain moral standards that are the common ground for all free men and women. This is where the importance of responsibility in media comes in. For this reason, as founder of the World Media Association, I emphasize and fight for freedom of the press as well as the moral responsibility of the media.

Thomas Jefferson wrote, quite correctly: "The press is the best instrument for enlightening the mind of man and improving him as a rational, moral and social being." Jefferson went so far as to say our very liberty itself depends on freedom of the press, and that press freedom could never be limited, not even a little bit, without being lost entirely. There is a great deal of truth in this.

Yet, how can we become an instrument for enlightening the mind of man and inspiring him as a rational, moral and social being without ourselves first being rational, moral and social beings? We must understand the basic principles determining what is moral and what is immoral. We must come to a basic understanding of the spiritual law of God.

Democracy cannot be exercised without a free press. And a free press cannot be truly free unless exercised with moral responsibility. I believe that a free press is a moral press. We who are media professionals take special pride in this. This is why we can say that journalists hold a special place in our society. They are the guardians of freedom and fighters against injustice.

In recent years, however, has our press been a moral and responsible press? Let us take the example of the press in the United States. The United States is considered to be the best example of a democratic system. The United States Constitution guarantees freedom of the press. Nevertheless, it is clear that the media's credibility and esteem are declining.

Studies show that in increasing numbers, people do not believe the newscaster as much as they used to. There seems to be floating through the fabric of society a growing perception of media arrogance and untrustworthiness. Last year, when United States troops were sent to Grenada, journalists were excluded from the scene. An NBC Nightly News commentator said what many members of the media were feeling. He said, "The American government is doing whatever it wants to, without any representative of the American public watching what it is doing."

The response that quickly poured into the offices of NBC in the form of letters and phone calls was that viewers supported the government's action five to one. An ABC newsman said that 99 percent of his mail supported President Reagan's decision to keep the press out of Grenada. Time magazine received many letters on the issue, running eight to one against the press.

In 1976, the National Opinion Research Center conducted a poll, which determined that only 29 percent of the American population had "a great deal of confidence in the press." Public esteem was already low, but eight years later that number has fallen even lower: to 13.7 percent in a recent survey, and it continues to decline.

Why is this? Why is the public refusing to believe the media? The public suspects selfish motivation behind news reporting, and people see that media practice has become increasingly irresponsible, sensationalistic and unprincipled.

The media cannot be apathetic to the trend of decreasing credibility. We cannot close our eyes to our responsibility for the future of the world. We, as founders, owners, writers and broadcasters of the media, must squarely face the judgment of public opinion, the judgment of history and the judgment of God.

Our job at the World Media Conference and the World Media Association is to restore declining media credibility to a wholesome level of trust and confidence. This is why our theme this year is, "Media Credibility and Social Responsibility'' We must recover the public trust, draft an accurate account of history, and gain the approval of God, the Creator and final judge of us all.

The media, along with the future of the free world, is at a crossroads. On the one hand, if you try to limit press freedom by legal means, you will most likely destroy it altogether. On the other hand, a media that can rampage at will, out of control, will always be in danger of losing its sacred public trust, with the same resulting loss of press freedom.

The only workable answer to this dilemma is self-imposed integrity and discipline. You have to be strong and free enough to resist tampering on the part of governments, and you must be moral and righteous and stand up for justice, or you will abuse the faith of the people and eventually lose press freedom. The lesson of history is that the result of the abuse of power is the loss of freedom. To be a great journalist, you must be a great human being, living in accord with the moral law of God. Therefore, the challenge of journalism starts from the challenge of being a moral and righteous person.

At this seventh World Media Conference, I propose to begin the work of a Media Ethics Committee as a way to help bring about a greater media awareness of the need to be our own watchdog. This type of committee must be free from any government influence. It must be made up of distinguished representatives of the world press to serve the following purposes:

1. To monitor specific cases, issues and prevailing trends in journalism.

2. To seek realistic standards of practice from representatives of the media that could be explored for adoption into the media's common ethic.

3. To speak out strongly on specific instances of abuse by the media, to call into question our own actions before the public does, and to recognize contributions by individuals and organizations to the cause of journalistic responsibility.

4. To create the Media Ethics Award, to be given at each year's World Media Conference to the person or organization anywhere in the world whose work best embodies the highest ideals of journalism in action, and whose work contributes the most to elevating public trust in the media profession.

If this conference can become the birthplace of this new endeavor, which will contribute to the protection of the free media and promote and enhance media responsibility, then we will have done a monumental good in history.

It has been my firm belief that the media is the guardian of freedom and upholder of the truth. There is no better way to fight totalitarian systems than by promoting free and responsible media. I echo the historical maxim, "The pen is mightier than the sword." In our modern day, this includes the microphone and camera as well.

I know that the gathering of the World Media Conference is a gathering of the mightiest forces on earth. I am confident that with this mighty force properly exercising its power, we can secure freedom for all humankind and peace for the entire world.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am writing this message to you from the United States federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. More than anybody else, I understand the preciousness of freedom but I cannot bend my principles for the sake of my own freedom. I am fighting against injustice and government encroachment not only on my freedom, but also on the freedom of millions of oppressed people on the face of the earth.

May God bless you and your conference in Tokyo.

Thank you very much.

First Student Convention of the World Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles
Given on True Father’s behalf at the Little Angels Performing Arts Center, Seoul, Korea

Distinguished guests, leaders of the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP), and representatives from every nation:

I would like to welcome you to this World CARP Student Convention. I would have liked to see your fresh, hope-filled faces directly, and I regret that circumstances prevent me from doing so. Although I cannot be here physically, I will be with you in heart and spirit throughout this period, and let’s promise to have an even more moving meeting again in the future. Although my body is imprisoned at Danbury, my ideal and work for history and the world are progressing without faltering. Many famous people and great scholars have come to comfort me from around the world and have listened to God’s plan, and recently leaders from mainstream Christian chinches in America have been cooperating with and supporting us actively. These developments are enormously encouraging for us all.

The fact that this first World CARP Student Convention is being held in Korea is very meaningful. Korea is not merely the place where I was born and where the Divine Principle movement originated. It is the place where, from a young age, I led a life of deep prayer and, through incredible struggles and searching through unexplored parts of the spirit world, I organized God’s teachings into the Divine Principle, sacrificing my youth while planning for the future.

Dear CARP leaders and CARP representatives from every nation, I would like to show my appreciation for your hard work. Alongside your course of research, you are doing splendid work in a practical movement to fulfill God’s Will. I am well aware that on university campuses and on the streets, you have stood against and overcome forces of unrighteousness, injustice and corruption. Your honorable endeavors to bring down the Berlin Wall, as well as your unyielding efforts, with the heart of martyrs, to fight against and overcome the forces of evil in Japan and the United States, are monumental achievements in CARP history.

I view the CARP .movement with great hope. Throughout the course of many years it has put down roots in more than seventy nations. On this foundation it saddens our hearts that our CARP members who are working in various communist nations have been unable to attend this first World CARP Student Convention.

One of my motives for establishing CARP lies in the youth and passion of university students. You do not live dwelling on the past; you live with endless hope for the future. You respect righteousness and long for truth and beauty. The innocent heart of youth has within it the most appropriate foundation to receive God’s Will.

In obedience to the Will of God, I established the goal of reforming the chosen people. I want to educate young intellectuals and nurture them to become people who adopt the motto, “Love Heaven, Love Humankind, Love Your Country,” and have them take the leading role in the new history. God’s ultimate providence is not restricted to any particular race, culture, district, church or denomination. For this purpose, you have to become a young generation that is forward-looking, open-minded and futureoriented, and become the driving force of the world. That is another reason I am placing my hope in CARP.

It is God’s Will for all people to jump across theological and doctrinal fences. For His Will to be fulfilled in every aspect of culture, it needs to be introduced first to college students as the new inheritors of culture and spread from there academically, philosophically and in practice. I know especially well that the red movement of international communism, standing in opposition to God, plans to use university campuses as a strategic base. I therefore wish to ensure that the youth of the world no longer are seduced by its falsehoods.

Thus, to overcome communism, I established CARP as a movement with a new philosophy and practice. This movement already has been tested on university campuses in Japan. In various parts of the world CARP is currently leading young people in a confrontation with communist ideology, and it is setting a good example of living a life of practice and service based on God’s love.

Communism is not the only problem in today’s world. Having gone through the Industrial Revolution and two world wars, humankind has witnessed the collapse of its prevailing worldview. It has not been able to find a new worldview that can digest the rapid progress of modern science and technology, and it is drifting along, unable to check the confusion of our human values. God already has brought an answer today, and He wants to say many things to the world’s youth, as they easily can be sucked in and hurt by the whirlpools that arise from this confusion.

Both God and humankind hope to build a united, ideal world of peace. An ideal world of peace is a united world where there are no conflicts. However, before we seek a united world, we first have to seek a unified nation. Likewise, before there can be a unified nation, there has to be a united tribe, which in turn needs to be preceded by a united family. Furthermore, before there can be a united, ideal family, there need to be ideal individuals without any conflicts or contradictions within them.

In this manner, the solution to the problem, from the individual level to the worldwide level, is possible only when the conflict between the incompatible forces of good and evil is overcome. The historical teaching to achieve this goal has come through religion, and the Messiah is the central figure and model for this providence. When the true world of peace is realized, that world will last for eternity and inevitably will transcend nations, races and religions. It will become a society of one family under God as our common Parent, a society in which all people are linked as brothers and sisters.

Although this is the burning desire of God and humankind, what is the world’s situation today? We talk about the global village and one world. However, individualism plays the dominant role in diversification and specialization. The trend of individualism is fanning the flames and has reached its peak, greatly damaging the order of existence in the world. Environmental pollution and the destruction of nature have brought about an ecological crisis for the whole world, and the manufacture of computer-controlled weapons of mass destruction has forced the people who created them to be like slaves trembling in fear.

What is the reason for the collapse of the basic value systems that have been guided by religions at their core? The reason is that religions have cast off their original responsibility and have lost their ability to lead because of perpetual disputes and divisions. Religions have not been able to explain clearly about God, life and the universe, and are unable to distinguish clearly between good and evil or righteousness and unrighteousness. They especially have been unable to give lucid answers to questions about the existence of God. As religions lost their traditional authority, material things ceased to be the means and became the goal, and pleasure seeking became our life’s ideal. Human nature became animal-like, captivated by physical and worldly desires. In this type of situation, the basic values of true love, service, righteousness and rebirth cannot continue.

Furthermore, the systematic expansion of machine-controlled operations into human relationships is accelerating the phenomena of dehumanization and human alienation, and is increasing the tendency toward human insignificance and compartmentalization. All of us ardently seek a new value system that can liberate us from this situation, which is suffocating our original human nature.

The new value system must originate from a new religion that has the power to convince people in the modern world and offer solutions to modern-day problems. It must teach people that God is the Parent of humankind and establish that the universe does not originate from matter. Regarding human spirituality and character, it has to reveal that human beings, as God’s heirs, have the authority to rule over the universe. In addition, it must teach about the ideal love that was part of the original creation and about the dual purpose of everything in the universe. It must reveal that within the great order of the universe, the original ideal was for everything to exist in harmony. The new value system has to encompass all these areas.

The Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles is a movement to spread the Divine Principle. It is the practical movement of university students testifying to God. If we do not reveal the truth, we cannot unite the will of people in society, and without a movement that can actualize God’s Will, there can be no fruit of His Will in the world. The Divine Principle movement we are advancing is not for the purpose of curing parts of the old, sick established culture. This movement intends to make a new beginning, starting from the origin.

Each of you, as individual truth bodies created by God, needs to cultivate your own character through applying the Principle and, with a fervent, passionate and pure mind, clear up and overthrow unrighteousness and evil. Although your body may be living in this fallen world, don’t allow Satan to influence you. Transcending the sorrows of the past, you have to become a model of hope. Don’t be depressed when you experience hardships; instead, look toward the future with a vision of hope. God does not need your particular skills or knowledge. God needs you; your mind, your will and your devotion.

From a young age I did not lose hope, even when faced with death, because I could feel God’s Will and heart at every moment. There was not a single instant when I was not aware of the world, the universe, humankind and history. That was because I didn’t have time even to feel my body’s fatigue. At every major turning point in history the power responsible for a new culture originated with young people. I do not need to mention the well-known examples of the young Buddha or the young Jesus. I too started my public life by founding the Unification movement in my mid-twenties.

CARP leaders and CARP members, who have gathered here today representing the youth of the world, we, the people of the Divine Principle movement, have to stand at the vanguard on the road toward the new world for which all people are longing. We have to take the leading role to bring about God’s ideal world of peace. You have to inherit my tradition and move ever forward, preparing the external foundation and also inheriting the internal world of God’s heart and tradition of faith. You are now at the steering wheel of a ship that more than four billion people have boarded.

Through our proper attitude, service and sacrifice, let us give hope to all people and be the flag-bearers in creating a new culture at the dawn of the new age of the twenty-first century. May the blessings and grace of the living God be upon the worldwide CARP movement.

Thank you.

Thirteenth International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences

Photo date and location unknown

Photo date and location unknown

Honorable chairman, eminent professors and scientists, ladies and gentlemen:

Thank you for participating in the thirteenth International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences. Although we cannot be together physically, my heart is with you. For thirteen years I have addressed this assembly of distinguished scholars and have raised questions concerning the state of the world and the responsibility of the scientific and academic communities to solve global problems.

Although the specific contents of my addresses have varied from year to year, the underlying thematic focus has remained unchanged. This focus is essentially twofold: the need for unity of the sciences and of knowledge in general, and the need for science to be guided by absolute values and purpose to assure the welfare of humanity.

God is the source of religious truth and scientific truth. God is the first in preaching and the first in science as well. I firmly believe that this is a fundamental truth of the universe, and I have based my life's work on this viewpoint. As a minister of the living God, I have sought to enhance, clarify and unite all aspects of God's essential being as manifested in the whole of creation, both physical and spiritual. My lifelong work has been motivated by my search for the meaning of life and my desire to enhance the material wellbeing of human existence, despite the many obstacles that have stood in my way since I began my mission at age sixteen. One of the greatest tragedies now unfolding in the pursuit of knowledge is the fragmentation of academic disciplines. Such divisive specialization of science and knowledge, like the dismantling of a machine, ultimately paralyzes the function of the whole and prevents science from fulfilling its overall mission.

Whether we accept it or not, the world is one. It is erroneous to think that one discipline has a more complete view of reality than another, or to think that discoveries and advances in different areas are unrelated. All fields of scientific and academic study are intertwined, each having a unique yet partial view of the whole of reality. It is to the advantage of total human progress and happiness that all fields of study work together harmoniously to form an integrated view of reality. However, in my view of the unity of science and knowledge, I am not advocating that we simply reduce all knowledge to a single academic discipline. Instead, I am referring to unity grounded in a fundamental purpose. There are many fields in science; however, all of them are seeking for the realization of happiness for human beings. Although contemporary academic circles are confronted with the problem of acute fragmentation and divisiveness, human beings face an even greater menace: the lack of absolute values. Thus, we need to turn our attention to the ongoing theme of ICUS: "The Search for Absolute Values."

Despite the fervent desire and serious efforts of most scientists and scholars to establish peace and prosperity, even in the most advanced nations problems such as poverty, illiteracy, disease, divisions and even wars are still persisting. Although science and technology are immensely developed in the modern world, humankind continues to suffer from sorrow, pain and diseases.

Many leaders are striving to eliminate this misery and secure true peace and stability. However, the world echoes only with empty promises of peace. Neither democratic capitalism nor communistic socialism has solved the world's fundamental problems. Both have allowed secular humanism to degrade human existence to materialism and thus demean the value of life. The so-called free world brought this situation through its incompetence and lack of vision in leading people in the right direction; the communist world caused this condition through its materialism.

Confusion and anxiety grow as a sense of purposelessness permeates the world. How has this come about? The main reason is that the standard of value that regulates human behavior has been undermined. As ethics and morality have lost their power, the standard of goodness has almost disappeared. Part of this disappearance is due to a misguided foundation of science, namely its attempt to be value-neutral, which has led science to ignore questions of humanity and moral values in the process of its development.

Over time, science gradually has become fragmented, with each field becoming more specialized, analytical and materialistic, thus further ignoring the questions of morality and values. Hence human dominion over science has weakened to the extent that no one can be sure of the fate of human existence on this planet.

Another reason for the undermining of values and morality is that many contemporary men and women no longer find past expressions of value and morality to be convincing. A new expression of morals and ethics needs to arise out of a new expression of values that contemporary individuals will find clear and compelling. Only a transcendent, united system of thought that unites past and present, secular and religious thought can provide such a new expression of values and morality.

I have long been interested in the relationships between the aims of religion, philosophy and science. As I have stated on earlier occasions, these conferences I have initiated stem from these concerns. While religion has concerned itself with metaphysical and moral questions, science has marginalized this area, limiting itself to understanding the regularities of nature and the structure and behavior of matter and energy in the framework of space and time. It is true that science has contributed to the tremendous advances in knowledge during the last few hundred years. Nevertheless, science without a standard of value to guide it could lead to global destruction. In my view, the whole range of knowledge from theology to science has no meaning without a well-understood purpose and a standard of value directing this knowledge. I believe this direction and standard of value can come only from a radically Godcentered religion. This perspective ought to come as no surprise to those in the scientific community who are familiar with the philosophical writings of many great scientists.

In my earlier addresses at ICUS, I have proclaimed that the Unification Principle and its associated theology can be the foundation for a new, united thought system that is radically centered on God. This teaching states that human beings have value by nature of their very being. Each person is meant to have a unique, parent-child relationship with God. Hence all people are created to lead life in accordance with a definite value perspective and God's purpose of creation, which is the establishment of relationships of true love. In fact, I propose that the absolute values we seek are grounded nowhere other than in the absolute, true love of God. Absolute beauty, truth and goodness can be realized based on the foundation of true love. It is my ardent desire that all scientists and scholars advance their respective fields on the basis of a solid viewpoint of moral values, and enhance human dignity by adding a spiritual dimension with a comprehensive approach to bring unity to the currently materialistic and analytical approach.

Solutions to the world's fundamental problems can come about only through such a holistic approach to human existence. I call upon the many distinguished scholars gathered at this conference to engage in a joint effort to create harmony and unity through the guidance of collective wisdom and knowledge, rather than engaging in clashing and fragmented approaches to the ideal of humankind.

I sincerely wish and hope that this conference will contribute toward realizing the ideal that God had envisioned in the beginning of creation. I pray that your endeavors will become decisive factors in the realization of a revolutionary new world, a world based on a culture of heart that culminates in building a world of true love, goodness, peace and happiness.

The Fourth Conference on “God: The Contemporary Discussion” and The Third Youth Seminar on World Religions
(Given on Father’s Behalf)

Honorable chairperson, distinguished scholars and clergy, participants in the Youth Seminar on World Religions, ladies and gentlemen:

Welcome to Korea, the site of the fourth conference on “God: The Contemporary Discussion” and the third annual Youth Seminar on World Religions.

It is very appropriate for the God conference and the youth seminar to convene together here in Korea. Korea has historically been a unique meeting place of the world’s religions. Buddhism and Confucianism are deeply rooted in Korean society, maintaining harmony with each other in the context of the native Korean Tan-gun tradition and traditional Korean folk belief. This year, 1984, marks the two-hundredth anniversary of the arrival of Catholicism and the one-hundredth anniversary of the arrival of Protestantism in Korea, which brought about the flourishing of Korean Christianity.

Within the culturally homogeneous Korean society, tremendous religious coexistence and crossfertilization have developed, and the precepts of these diverse religious traditions are embedded harmoniously in the people and society of the “hermit kingdom.” From this soil has emerged the Unification movement, seeking unity within diversity on the worldwide level, striving to establish a world of love, empathy and harmony based on the religious affirmation that all people are one family under our common Parent, God.

To create a world that resembles this ideal, we need an overall model or blueprint. An important Unification concept is that of a mature or perfected person, whose mind and body are united. The highest ideals and purposes spring forth from the mental and spiritual life of a person focused on God. The nervous system transmits the mind’s commands to the cells and relays information from the physical body back to the mind. When this exchange occurs smoothly we say that the individual is in harmony. The mental and spiritual life of humanity can be likened to the mind’s activity, and the economic life of humanity to the body’s functions. God’s ideals, aspirations and love manifest socially through religion. Theology, philosophy, art and all culture revolve around this religious essence; their substantial reality in the life of all people is their material base. Religious, theological and philosophical thinkers can be compared to a central nervous system, transmitting, interpreting and developing impulses from God to the whole body of humanity.

I consider religious leaders and scholars to be of crucial importance for the betterment of the world and for the creation of a new cultural revolution. Throughout history, such leaders have always been the vanguard of culture, in the rise of Christianity and the world of Islam, as well as during the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Enlightenment.

Today, however, along with unprecedented success in the realms of science and technology, we have unprecedented problems as well. Religion often fails to speak to the real problems of the modern world, and those taking the lead in social change often act under the antireligious banner of communism. However, communism practices violence as a means for change; it ultimately denies God, turns against religions, and tries to limit and restrict our perspective to the material world.

I am aware that many supporters of communism have high ideals and are working beyond the scope of nationality, race and culture. However, their energy and idealism must be complemented by thought and action based on God. Therefore, the world needs religious leaders and scholars to be sacrificial pioneers. The God conference, the Youth Seminar on World Religions, and all the activities of the International Religious Foundation provide a forum and a structure to help fulfill this ideal.

As individuals, please renew your dedication and use your skills to help the world. As representatives of the world’s religions, please bring your churches, mosques, synagogues, shrines and temples into a cooperative unity for the sake of world peace and human freedom, centered on God. Many people question what religions can do in this secular age. I answer that the world’s religions need to provide a stable, universal foundation of values upon which governments can build true peace and harmony. They need to provide a global ethic that helps humanity fully utilize science and technology for the sake of happiness, and helps us lift up, purify and share the world’s cultures.

The ideal I am espousing is nothing other than the kingdom of God on earth. I see it as a realistic goal toward which we can work practically step by step. Some people have been telling me that I am utopian. I recognize that I am extremely idealistic, but I have no alternative. God has called me directly, personally, to take on this task and responsibility.

I have been concentrating not only on teaching people about God’s ideal; I am also promoting the accomplishment of that ideal on earth. For this purpose I have dedicated all of my efforts in areas such as missionary work, education, alternatives to communist ideology, the ecumenical movement and social services. Among these, I put the greatest emphasis on the ecumenical movement.

A major problem that humanity faces today is the lack of spiritual unity, both within Christianity with its various denominations, and among and within each of the world’s religions. Despite all efforts to the contrary, divisions and animosities among various religious groups continue. Religious wars are still waged, as they have been for centuries. In spite of the various movements toward ecumenism, it remains true that religious arrogance, intolerance and bigotry are still prevalent among devout believers. Thus, although most religions have professed the same God and often even the same views for centuries, followers of those great religious traditions have continually persecuted and warred with one another.

We must realize that God is beyond denominationalism, doctrinal exclusivism and factionalism. God’s purpose is, and always has been, to save the entire world, not merely a particular race, nation or religious group. As religious people, we cannot help God in the task of salvation when we sustain fighting and animosity among ourselves. Many religious leaders are aware of this; for numerous reasons it has been difficult to change that reality.

The essence of my teaching is that interreligious harmony is a necessary condition for world peace. No single religion has manifested God completely. Therefore, diversity and differences of religion have been inevitable. Yet, as many great religious leaders have taught, because we are all children of the same Heavenly Parent, we are all brothers and sisters of the same one great family, and interreligious conflict and divisive hatred are unnecessary.

In my years of spiritual search and struggle, I encountered God many times, and I also spiritually encountered the founders of all the world's great religions. I feel God’s continual presence and inspiration every day of my life. Without God, how would it have been possible for a man born in an isolated farming village in a small, oppressed and destitute nation to now be able to sponsor and address this august assembly of the world’s religious leaders? I testify that the teachings of the Unification movement, its goals and all its projects are the result of God’s direction to me. They are not my personal theory and activity, they are God’s.

The International Religious Foundation is planning to sponsor a Parliament of World Religions in 1993. That Parliament will commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of the 1893 Worlds Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in conjunction with the first World’s Fair. Prior to the 1993 event, two preparatory meetings will be convened, one in mid-November 1985 near New York City, and the other sometime in 1989. Each of these gatherings will bring together more than seven hundred spiritual teachers, scholars, lay leaders, artists and young people. It is hoped that the three planned events will lead to other such programs in the future.

The 1993 Parliament of World Religions and the two preparatory meetings are designed to provide a new environment for global ecumenical contacts. The objective is to move toward discovering the universal principles that underlie all life and to promote the fullest diversity of its possible expressions. In so doing, the Parliament will seek to advance and develop international peace and harmony for which the world yearns. Participants will be offered an opportunity to share their perspectives on our present spiritual condition and on the challenges of our present age.

The purpose of the Parliament will not be to legislate, either politically or doctrinally; it will be to promote mutual respect among the world’s religions and to foster interreligious cooperation on projects initiated by them. The overall theme will be the renewal of spirituality and the establishment of world peace under God.

I thank you for your participation. I hope this conference will be centered not on human thinking about God but on God’s original ideal. I truly believe that your studies and discussions will bring about tremendous progress in realizing God’s ideal on this earth.

Thank you.

God’s Will Is for Humanity to Become One

It is God’s Will that everything be brought into oneness. Had the Fall not occurred, our mind and body would have become one.

The mind and body of man would have united and the mind and body of woman would have united. Had this happened, the unification of these two beings of harmonized mind and body as a couple would have engendered a world of unity. When we look at today’s world, we can see that it is not a united world. What does the world of today reflect? It is meant to be a magnified expression of man and woman.

Can you say that your mind and body have been united throughout your life? Whether this question is posed to a man or a woman, I do not think that anyone can answer affirmatively. We can reach the overall conclusion that this world is not the outcome God desired. This is why we say it is a fallen world. Thus, since there is not a single person whose mind and body are united, the conclusion is that we have no unified families, tribes, peoples, nations, world or cosmos (heaven and earth).

Therefore, we can see that if one person succeeds in uniting his mind and body, God will seek to manifest Himself as God to that one person.

This is how we think. Thus, if two such people become one, it is clear that God will manifest Himself as subject partner to this couple. And if this couple forms a tribe, God will manifest Himself in this tribe once it achieves oneness. Thus, thinking this way leads to the understanding that even though there are hundreds of millions of people in the world, the Almighty God wishes to manifest Himself before each of them as their subject partner.

Then what is the path I am taking and what is the work I am carrying on? This is the issue. The ultimate goal is to find the path to the oneness of all humanity. This is the path the sons and daughters that stand in the position of God’s beloved children must take. Had human beings not fallen, who would have been responsible for the unity of human beings? It would not have been God; human beings should have achieved oneness and lived a life of attendance to God. We must understand this point. Had this been achieved, it would have become the starting point of unity and would have brought together all the hundreds of millions of people.

However, due to the Fall, all of this was destroyed and human history after the Fall became the history of recreation and, at the same time, the history of restoration. Accordingly, God’s position became one of seeking and hoping for someone to redress this outcome all the way to the global level.

Jesus was alone when he carried the cross. He bore the cross by himself. As a result of Jesus’ crucifixion, God lost Judaism. Christianity, the new ideal religion that would have formed had it not been for the crucifixion, was lost, rome was lost and the world was lost. Then on what position is rev. Moon standing today? What work is Rev. Moon doing? Because I knew what work God desired…What is the Unification Church doing today? You need to clearly understand this. Your fathers and mothers are trying to separate you from rev. Moon; you face opposition in all corners. Judaism seeks to separate you; Christianity and the Communist party also. Nonetheless, you are saying that you will not be pulled away.

My philosophy is to choose and follow the path that leads to the realization of God’s hope of bringing together the four billion people of the world.

After hearing the Supreme Court’s verdict, you may be asking, “God, what next do you have in store for us?” After the Supreme Court’s verdict, however, Christianity returned to the side of the Unification Church. What kind of great blessings do you think await us through my going to prison after this legal battle? Humanity will take our side. Henceforth, on the path that I take, united families not seen in the fallen world are following me, united tribes are following me, united countries are following me and a united world is following me. This is why when I overcome this hill, a united group of people from all over the world will be waiting for me.

Therefore, I believe that the path I am taking is the path of hope. I am setting out on a path of hope and joy.

This is why all of you who are gathered here must gather and make unity with all the different people of the world, and then follow me. Blessed couples must make oneness with their families and follow me. Leaders of tribes and nations must be united with their tribes and nations and follow me. All the members of the Unification Church worldwide must unite and follow me. I know that because of this day, the Unification Church tradition, which is capable of bringing unity, is connecting the True Parents with their sons and daughters, with the existing churches, with the United States, and with the world.

On this day, as I set out on my assigned path, I do not want you to send me away with tears. I welcome your tears if the tears you shed spring from the thought of fighting ten times, a hundred times more than I have for the sake of this nation and this world. If your hearts are sad and grieving, please become pillars of the Unification movement who, when I am released, will come to see me, having united thousands and tens of thousands of people. Please do not forget that God is staking this moment in the hope that you will accomplish this.

With the belief that you, our Unification Church members whom I leave behind, will make oneness with Christianity and the world, I am going to prison with the aim to bring the people there, who are not united, into one. Since that is also our territory, please know that I am going there to ignite a movement that will newly bring all those living there together. Therefore, all of you who are remaining outside must unite completely. If you do not unite, we will not be able to further the movement to open the gates of hell and liberate hell. This is why to open those gates, you who are remaining outside [of prison] need to first unite. That place is also our territory.

The number of people listening to me in East Garden today may be small but you must know that there are many outside people, people that believe in God, who have been shedding tears, without your knowledge, because of this day. Why am I trying to accomplish on a global scale what no one else has been able to accomplish? I have fought until now waiting for the day when the world can welcome the blessing of becoming a new world. From now, when I cry out, all those with conscientious hearts will spring forth and engage in a unifying movement that will spread like wildfire. There can be no despair before the path that leads to greater unity. There can only be glory and prosperity. You must know this. Please have this resolve and reach out to everyone around you, investing with the heart, “Staying outside [of prison], I will build a bridge to reach across to the realm that possesses the good fortune of unity on a global level, and play the role of the concrete that cements things together.”

Look at the world. We have our Unification Church, we have Christianity, we have so many friends and colleagues around the world. You must be more confident. Until yesterday, people laughed at you and called you Moonies. Do they do that even now? You know who the great Moonie leader is. Take pride in being a Moonie. Therefore, we must stand up anew. This is the right time. We have no time to grieve. We have no time to cry and no time to despair. We only have time to move forward for hope. We may be distressed tonight but we only know of advancement. Why? To liberate God. From that moment, the era when God can freely oversee the world will come. I sought out this path because I knew that from the moment God becomes free, the kingdom of heaven on earth will be realized from there. You and I share the homework of uniting the world and I entrust this task to you. As for me, I am going there to open the gates of hell. “We will bring about unity! We will realize unity!” This is our homework. We shall move forward for this purpose. All of you who desire this, please stand up. We shall move forward toward that purpose.

Amen!
