Day of All True Things in the Place of the Wolves

Here in Lobos ("wolves"), Argentina, an hour southwest of Buenos Aires, in the place the locals call the castle. Imported piece by piece from Spain, replete with fantastic endless carvings, tapestries, paintings, scenes of the conquistadores and coats of arms in gold and leather from corner to corner, floor to ceiling and through the ceiling to the next ceiling. Here I found myself in a northern California-style countryside, flat and sliced by stands of eucalyptus trees, except that here it goes on for 1,000 miles or more betwixt Atlantic and Andes. And outside of the Buenos Aires province, there are only 15 million people ranging across a territory a third the size of the United States.

The castle grounds present the other-worldly aural environment of perfect silence (no industry; no motor vehicles) and the singing of birds and mooing of cows. At night, the stars showed brightly in the dark sky, and all the earth was quiet like it hasn't been in New York for a century. Trees of many kinds scattered across the parklands of the estate, which was and will once again be the finest polo field in Argentina. I can't figure it out; it just looks like a flat field to me. But then again, I don't play polo.

On the grounds is a church, a simple structure housing an enormous crucifix, the oaken Jesus weeping upon the empty pews. True Parents were happy to be here, as the leaders and members gathered at 7 a.m. for the opening prayer of the Holy Day.

And as usual, one is a little lost arriving in a new world, wherein the universe collapses into one's suitcase and where to put it and where to place one's body tonight and is there a blanket and towel for me?, and feeling thus a little disoriented, but anxious to quickly settle in and greet our True Parents. And the re-assurances that the universe is still friendly: an eager-to-please brother arrives with car to get to the castle from the servants' quarters, and once inside- well, they are eating, but here is a familiar face-an East Garden sister! motioning me to come to a side room to sit and she brings incredible silverware and good ol' curry rice, and even a cup of strong coffee. Yes, the universe is good.

From Bottom to Top

As UNews readers are aware, Rev. and Mrs. Moon did not continue meeting with DC's movers and shakers on the heels of the Sisterhood Ceremonies, as the religio/politically-minded do, but instead went with a few of their family and staff camping out in the jungle of Brazil. For weeks, fishing for golden dorado, fighting flies and eating fruit in a three room hut attended by a local farmer with no phone. There, government leaders found them and they talked, but Rev. Moon was interested mostly in fishing. Why did you come? Okay, you came, so sit down and I'll tell you what I want: I want to create the ideal world in your country.

He emerged from the jungle, this septagenarian, and dropped in on the president of Paraguay, Mr. Wasmosy, of Uruguay, Mr. Sanguinetti, and of Argentina, Mr. Menem. He talked with them of their countries' problems, identified as poverty, environmental pollution and youth corruption. President Menem added, terrorism and atheism, and Rev. Moon said he could solve the latter within a few hours, given the proper media. Each meeting concluded with a bear hug in which Rev. Moon lifted the president off the floor. Serious and stressed-out men, finally liberated, for a moment, in affectionate laughter.

With the commander-in-chief of one nation's military forces, fishing together on a military boat entirely unsuited for fishing, which continually broke down, singing songs and making friends with the man and his soldiers. "You do not have your mind and body united," Rev. Moon challenged him. "Yes, I do, sir," the chief replied, and his wife seconded him. "Then, can you forgive your enemies?", responded Rev. Moon. The man looked down. "Jesus had mind and body united, and he forgave his enemies. You must learn to do the same," the teacher continued, and later Rev. Moon invited him to fish together in Alaska. Finally the chief, too, smiled as Rev. Moon attempted to lift him- unsuccessfully, as his weight is very great.

In one country, the president invited the Unification Church to educate its youth in morality, because the Catholic Church has dropped the ball. In a second country, the president is a former journalist who persecuted the Unification Church very much. Rev. Moon scolded him, the report goes, and he accepted it. All the presidents were very open to the Unification view of religions working together to achieve the restoration of the family. Mr. Menem compared his country to a pillar of sand, which, without God and strong families, will disintegrate into nothing.

Indeed, on my free afternoon in Buenos Aires, there was a most wistful sight: crowds of youthful, long-haired demonstrators, waving flags with Che Guevara's picture, flanked by soldiers and tanks. All the gaps of the sixties revisited; all the misguided idealism and misguided governance. Everywhere about the capitol building was graffiti; Buenos Aires is filled with graffiti, not just in the slums but on their equivalent of Fifth Avenue.

We often reflect on the unfortunate circumstances which prevented True Parents from coming to America during the sixties' window of idealism; well, today the same window is open in South America.

Resurrecting All Things

Father spoke a little over three hours to an enthusiastic crowd at the Castle on the morning of the Day of All True Things. He taught them of the meaning of wives in biblical history, and the restoration of Eve. He taught of the beginning of the second forty year course, which can be completed in four years based upon our effort and faith. God Himself began with nothing, having only absolute love, absolute faith and absolute obedience to the principle of true love. We, however, who may think we have nothing, actually have everything: the foundation of the first forty years.

As did Father and Mother, who went to zero in the wilderness of Brazil, and emerged to embrace the top of the society, so too do we have the power to move from zero to the top. Insodoing, we turn the nation upside-down and right side-up, centering on true love and Tribal Messiahship.

In each country, after the presidential meeting, Father hosted a banquet for 300 to 450 guests-and I mean, guests! At the Alvear Palace Hotel in Buenos Aires were the glitterati of the Pampas; at my table were two senators (one male, one female) and a professor. One of our brothers was there from Africa; this brother-a German with his family recipe-founded and manages a successful sausage company. He's expanding to South America, now, and one senator immediately hooked him up to visit his province and look at factory space there. The amazing thing is, these people are receiving the Principle! They are recognizing and respecting True Parents! Not one person left the room during Father's speech.

And at the close came Gloria of Paraguay, singing her heart out, and I saw socialites with spectacular gowns and tears in their eyes, singing along with the mournful songs of the heart. Then, as the program drew to a close at midnight, out came the coffee and pastries!

Upstairs in True Parents' suite came all the members, and with them an internationally-known Argentinian surgeon and his wife. They listened to Father until 2:30 a.m., I tell you, and Father's heart-which he teaches us-that this may be my only chance to teach them, was expressed. I can't understand Korean or Spanish, but I understood this speech: it was all about true love between husband and wife. Like a bright son, the surgeon answered Father's 2 a.m. query with a resounding "Si!". It took Father a little longer, but he finally got the wife to agree that her husband is subject! (After all, she is the president of the WFWP Argentina, and had herself brought 280 guests to the banquet.)

Axial Shift

The Day of All True Things afternoon was spent watching soccer matches on television. No ordinary ones; these featured a team founded by - you guessed it - Rev. and Mrs. Moon; the Il Hwa Pharmeceuticals team, called the "Heavenly Horses". As I understand it, they, a young team, are one of the top teams in Korea, and have done well internationally as well. I was moved by Parents' heart-they know how South Americans love soccer, and so shared themselves just like anyone's parents that afternoon-in front of the tube, watching a game!

Not being a soccer afficianado yet, I wandered outside into the world of the wolves and birds, and was drawn by the smell of roasting beef and a sight I'd never seen: a side of beef on a rack above a smoky wood fire. One of our elder members had offered up a cow the night before, Antonio Betancourt explained to me. This simple older brother- "we have no one like him in the United States" (I don't know if Antonio has spent a lot of time with our members out in Montana, or he may not have said that); he is blessed and his children are blessed, and this elder brother cut us a big slice of dazzling steak, and we sprinked salt on it and it was ze best! Soon Rev. Kamiyama and Hyung Tae Kim and a host of others were out, sampling these hefty hors d'ouvres.

Later that night, Father announced new leaders coming to South America, from Korea and from Japan. Later, I heard, he will appoint leaders from North America. It is time to move. South America may seem far away from here, but once you get there, it's right at home.

Commentary on the Family Pledge

by W. Bindley-Center Point, TX

1..2..3..4..5..6..7, All good children go to Heaven is an even more appropriate rhyme these days!

1. Our family, centered on true love, pledges to establish the Kingdom of God on earth and in Heaven, the original ideal of creation, by restoring the original homeland.

True Parents, in giving us this new family pledge, are asking us to restore all that was lost to God in the first seven days (periods) of the creation.

If we look at each one in turn we are restoring the true value to each number.

Where did the original homeland begin? In the heart of God. We are pledging that we will realize that ideal and make God's dream come true. Isn't that what we all desire, too, to see our hopes and dreams come true? What more wonderful pledge to make than to determine before and above all else to heal our Heavenly Parents' shattered heart?

2. Our family, centered on true love, pledges to perfect the way of filial sons and daughters in the family, patriots in the nation, saints in the world, and holy sons and daughters in the cosmos, by dedicating ourselves to God and True parents and by becoming a central family that represents the cosmos.

This is basically the restoration of the first blessing, unity of mind and body and the restoration of the number "2". Once we have decided in our hearts to mend God's broken heart, then we need to figure out how to set about doing it. As with Adam and Noah and now with us, we are with this Family Pledge receiving God's blessing, and this time we have all the knowledge we need to embody and reproduce and multiply it. We have to create ourselves. This means changing our thoughts, because our thoughts determine who we are and ultimately our destiny. Before we can accomplish on a larger scale, we must be master of our own territory-our bodies. How can we rule over anything if we don't have dominion over ourselves? This can only happen by taking charge, then taking full responsibility for everything. That means no complaints, no blaming of others, no judging, no expecting everyone else to change, no resentment, no feeling victimized, passed over, ill-treated, etc., etc., etc.

Accept fully everything, every situation, every relationship and see it as it truly is: a lesson in s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g your heart to love more. Check your reaction to what is being said to you by those around you, family, spouse, children, teachers, parents, coworkers, leaders. Everyone has a message for you if you are willing to receive it, to expect and look for it. Check your reaction (your heart) when you have to wait in line and you have an appointment to make, or you are stopped for speeding for the third time that month, or you snapped at the children again for no apparent reason. CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS! When niggling ones enter your mind, dismiss them-just tell them that they do not belong to you, and watch them go.

Does this sound like "mission impossible"? Of course, it is if you try to go it alone. You are not alone, however; not only are you not alone, but you have your own cheering section egging you on all the time. Check in to base, don't drift along in space. Center yourself each morning (and night); offer yourself completely to God through someone else. Or else, ask Him to give someone an experience through you; then, relax and watch and see what happens. Just like fundraising: it may come early on or in the last moment of the day, but come it will. Your days will become exciting as you play this game-the game of Life. You will become an expert at spotting the clues left by spirit world-the ladders and the snakes. Eventually, you will begin to see the moves ahead of you: then you will be captain of your own ship.

3. Our family, centered on true love, pledges to perfect the Four Great Realms of Heart, the Three Great Kingships and the Realm of the Royal Family.

Once you have control over your thoughts, you have control over your body. Then you can begin to expand your territory as you will have learned that by sending out good thoughts, these will have created a good atmosphere, good vibrations, good environment and a good home base. People will naturally be drawn to such a safe place. They will seek you out for help, guidance and counseling; your sphere of influence will widen.

4. Our family, centered on true love, pledges to fully realize the world of freedom, peace, unification and happiness by creating one great family on the cosmic level, which is God's ideal of creation.

Number 4 is the restoration of the third blessing. Once your home has become a haven of peace and a place of welcome for all, then other families will want to know what you know, do what you do, be as you are. So the ideal community is born.

5. Our family, centered on true love, pledges to strive daily for greater development toward the unity between the spiritual world (subject) and the physical world (object).

As we have restored ourselves through re-creating our thoughts, the restoration of our harmonized selves occurs. We become the resonator between the two worlds, the true microcosm of the cosmos. We will be sound of mind and body. We have no further need to be attached to addictions of any kind whether of spirit or of body. As we are in tune, we will not only hear the sound of creation, but will be the conductor and arranger, also.

6. Our family, centered on true love, pledges to become an ideal family that multiplies God's blessings to our surroundings, by being the family that represents God and True Parents and that can mobilize heavenly fortune.

This is the restoration of the number 6, the number of creation: the number stolen from God, lost by Adam and lost by Eve, the 666 taken by Satan. Now we can claim our rightful inheritance, all that has been lost, hidden, held back from us, will be freely given.

7. Our family, centered on true love, pledges to fully realize a world of shimjung culture that is connected to the original blood lineage.

"On the seventh day, God rested...."

As the world of heart (shimjung) is fully realized, as God sees His own children, grandchildren, great-, great-great-, great-great-great- grandchildren, and so on, and can walk and talk freely with them, imagine the energy, the joy, the laughter, the singing and dancing, the happiness being generated: what a world!

We absolutely can do it-only by changing our thoughts, by thinking only good, isn't that powerful, isn't it awesome? So watch it-someone is thinking about you. Make sure they are thinking something good about you by making sure you have thought something good about them first.

Cleaning Up Our Physical Body

Last month I wrote about the background of proper health care. What is the practical methodology of keeping our insides clean? The five different areas that require improvement are the following:

1. Digestive system
2. Eliminative system
3. Circulatory system
4. Lymph system, and
5. Proper food combining

Let me begin with the digestive and eliminative systems.

When we choose food, we should do so with an understanding of which foods provide the most nutrition for our cells. When food is fresh, it is nutritious, but when the same food decays, it turns into toxins (poisons). Rotten food will develop into many types of illnesses. There is little difference in whether we eat fresh food and let it rot in our body, or eat spoiled food. The small intestine will absorb whatever is passed on from the stomach. From there it goes into the blood stream and is distributed to the liver, kidneys, heart, etc. It is common sense to keep anything we use clean and in good working condition. We can do no less for our body. Rotten food is the source of rotten blood, hence "we are what we eat." When our intestines hold decayed matter, the new food supply will be mixed with the existing rotten material already in the 22 feet of small intestine and 5 feet of large intestine (colon). We turn our body into a walking sewage system. The upsurge of illnesses in today's society is the result of decayed food matter circulating in our blood system and distributing toxins to every cell in our body.

Let us think carefully about this subject. When we are dealing with 27 feet of intestines, that are packed with raw sewage material, is there a way to clean up this mess? The answer absolutely is YES!

When we open the exhaust pipe and clean out all the poisonous substances, good things will happen rather quickly. If you stick a potato in the exhaust pipe on your car, what will happen?

The large intestine is like the exhaust pipe in our body. Let us clean it out and see what happens. Most people who use herbal capsules (specially formulated for internal cleansing) with each meal, will experience quite a surprise. There is tremendous relief, just as when we use Draino on our plugged up kitchen sink. Over a period of time, layer after layer of old, putrid matter that has been adhering to the intestinal walls, will peel off and be eliminated. When that happens it is like scratching off a scab from the skin. At that stage it is quite important to use a good aloe vera juice formula to assist in the healing of the mucous membranes that line our intestinal walls. Now, probably for the first time in quite a while, they are free from the suffocating grasp of old waste matter. Indigestion, heartburn, gas, sourness, constipation and diarrhea can now be corrected. Does it not stand to reason that when assimilation of foods in our intestinal system and elimination are off balance, our bodily organ will be harmed? Underweight and even overweight problems are also related to improper assimilation and elimination.

If we never learn how to clean our teeth, we will suffer the consequences. It is no different with our digestive and eliminative system. I know, it sounds too good to be true that there is a rather simple solution to many of our health problems. But seeing, or in this case, experiencing, is believing.

Lastly, let me share a couple of testimonies from people whose health was greatly affected by changing some basic elements in their diet.

Dear Mrs. Hsu; For the past five years I have suffered from bleeding constipation, irregularity, mucous stools, and colon discomfort. I was also diagnosed with sludge in my gall bladder, Epstein-Barr virus, nervous stomach, and hypoglycemia. I had eight different food allergies that upset my stomach. Needless to say, I was a physical wreck with little hope for the future.

But during these last 11 months of following your Internal Cleansing and Food Combining Program, my health has improved greatly! It has been months since the last signs of Epstein-Barr virus. All of my colon discomfort-constipation, irregularity, bleeding, and bloating- are gone! My food allergies have been alleviated. The doctor retested my gall bladder and found the sludge gone. And as a wonderful added bonus, I lost 82 pounds in only 11 months. I also went from a person with no energy to one just abounding with energy.

For all of this, Mrs. Hsu, I owe you many thanks.

D.H., Powell, Ohio

Dear Mrs. Hsu; I've had such remarkable results in such a short period of time since starting your blood purification plan that it's difficult to contain my enthusiasm. Though I had no outward signs of illness, a routine examination revealed borderline high blood pressure, elevated blood sugars, dangerously high cholesterol and triglycerides, and a fast "resting" heartbeat, but "slow" aerobic heartbeat-all early warning signs of heart disease and related illnesses. In one short month your program has changed my whole metabolism as these changes show-first figure is August 26 , second is September 26

Weight 196 to 173; Blood Pressure 145/95 to 120/78; Resting Heartbeat 95 to 68; Aerobic Heartbeat 115 to 136; Cholesterol 355 to 244

I am less irritable, less "stressed-out," and I have also noticed a change in my natural breathing pattern. I am experiencing tremendous energy without the "sugar crashes."

I look great, I feel great, and I enjoy each day, and I sincerely thank you for introducing me to your program.

J.M., Columbus, OH

The next issue will contain information on the circulatory and lymph systems. If you are interested in more detailed information, send a S.A.S.E.

May God Bless You, and be well.

Why You Should Remain a Long-Term Investor

If you are concerned about market volatility, you may at times question the logic of your investment strategy. If the current performance of your investments is not what you had anticipated, you may be asking yourself, "Should I sit in cash?" or "Should I sell specific holdings?"

These concerns are normal, but they are often driven by emotion. And an emotional decision could adversely affect your portfolio. An article in The Wall Street Journal* addressed six questions investors should ask themselves before changing their investment strategy in a down market cycle.

1. Remember why you are investing. Review your original investment plan. Has your investment time horizon changed in any way? Have there been any lifestyle changes that necessitate the development of a new game plan? Has your risk tolerance changed? If your answers to these three questions are no, don't focus on the short-term performance of your portfolio. Remember you are following an investment strategy that was designed to help you meet your objectives over time.

2. Look at your whole nest egg. Instead of focusing on the individual performance of specific holdings in your portfolio, look at the big picture. How is your portfolio performing as a whole? Do your objectives for this portfolio fit into your overall financial goals?

3. Think in percentages. Percentages are easier to deal with than dollars. Although you may look at the dollars as a loss, you should evaluate your performance relative to appropriate benchmarks to see whether or not your portfolio is performing in line with current investment cycles.

4. Invest regularly. By regularly investing a fixed dollar amount, you get the benefit of dollar cost averaging. You will be able to buy more shares when prices are down. As a result, the average cost of each share you buy will be lower than the average price in the market over the same period. [Of course, dollar cost averaging neither guarantees a profit nor protects against loss in a prolonged declining market environment.]

5. Rebalance your portfolio. Review your original objectives at regular intervals or as your financial needs change. Review your current asset allocation with a financial services professional to determine if it is in line with your long-term goals. Focus on the long term. Changes for short-term gains may have a negative impact on your long-term goals.

6. Rethink your investment time horizon. Has anything changed? If you have 10 years or more to invest, use any market downturns as opportunities to find value.

If you are still not sure about long-term investing, consider a study conducted by Dalbar Financial Services Inc, which showed that the behavior of investors has a significant impact on investment performance. In the Dalbar study, equity fund investors held their investments for an average of 17 to 48 months during the period from January 1, 1984 through September 30, 1993. Their returns ranged from 70% to 90%.** Compare that to the S&P 500, which earned a total return of 293% over the same 10 years. In other words, equity investors who move in and out of investments based on short-term changes in the market underperform investors who stick with a long-term strategy-by a margin of 3 to 1 over a 10-year period.

Equity Investing Over the Long Term: Numbers Tell the Story

Equity investments, when held over the long term, have consistently outperformed fixed income alternatives on an historical basis. According to statistics compiled by the Frank Russell Company, if you had invested $100 in the S&P 500 on December 31, 1986 and held it until June 30, 1994, you would have received a cumulative return of 182.8% (11.9% annualized) for this period. A similar $100 investment in the Lehman Brothers Intermediate Government/Corporate Bond Index over the same period of time would have produced a 77.2% cumulative return (7.9% annualized).***

And, statistics from Ibbotson Associates of Chicago show that if you had invested $100 every month in the S&P 500 from October 1984 through September 1994, for a total of $12,000, the dollar value of your portfolio (including principal and interest) would have grown to $22,528 during this period versus $15,830 for the same investment in Treasury bills.

Both the Ibbotson and Frank Russell statistics include the 1987 market decline and the 1990 bear market. Even during this volatile 10-year period, you can see that you would have been well served to have remained invested in equities. In fact, as charted by Ibbotson, the equity markets have returned an average 9.8% return annually since 1926.**** (Of course, past performance does not indicate future results.)

A Disciplined Investment Approach is Key to Success

In summary, a disciplined and long-term approach is key to investment success. Take time to review your financial objectives with a financial services professional who will work with you to evaluate your portfolio's current performance and to reassess your investment strategy, if needed.

Utterances From The Promoters Of Paranoia

A dear friend recently sent UNews a copy of a news brief that appeared just last month in Agri News, a paper published in Texas:

Do You Know A Cultist?

The government definition of a cult, provided to Janet Reno by Cult Awareness Network, is as follows: "A cultist is one who has a strong belief in the Bible and the second coming of Christ; who frequently attends Bible studies; who contributes regularly to a Christian cause, who home schools his children; who has accumulated survival foods and has strong belief in the 2nd Amendment, and who distrusts big government." Abundant Wildlife, Issue 3.

In January of 1989, CAN's Executive Director, Cynthia Kisser, spoke to a reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, of how CAN would treat Jesus: "if he were alive now, we'd take an interest in him because of the great controversy surrounding his fringe activities. ... We'd try to see if there was abuse, unethical behavior or deceptive practices. And I'd send whatever we could find to reporters."

During a recent appearance on Nightline, CAN associate, Steve Hassan, stated that the Jehovah's Witnesses were a "destructive cult." In 1989 at a CAN conference Hassan stated that "the Catholic Church is the biggest cult in America."

Herbert Rosedale, President of the American Family Foundation, once described a Unification Church retreat center in an article published in The Times Herald Record as: "a center which spreads physical and emotional disease among its members and infects the community with the results therefrom.

UTS Open House

by Dirk Anthonis-Barrytown, NY

Where on earth do Australians perform Slovakian dances or Chinese passionately sing Korean folk songs or Americans dress up in typical Chinese garb to enact an ancient oriental folk tale?

The site of these unusual performances was the Unification Theological Seminary (UTS), which on May 7 held its 13th annual Spring Open House and Family Festival.

Some 500 people, including about 150 children, attended the event, which concluded with a 90-minute entertainment program, in which several of the international UTS students demonstrated their artistic and multicultural talents.

The Spring Open House began with an ecumenical service around the theme "One World, One Family." Mrs. Alexa Fish Ward, who offered the sermon, reminded the congregation that the work of building a harmonious world family begins in our own homes.

She quoted Mrs. Barbara Bush, wife of former President George Bush, as saying that "what happens in your house is more important than what happens in the White House."

Family values are talked about a lot nowadays, Mrs. Ward added, but we need to do more than pay lip service to them.

"Putting God first," she said, is the building block of a God-centered family. "One way to put God first is to put other people first" by attending to their needs more than to our own. This, she concluded, is the essence of a public life and a public family.

New Programs

Apart from the traditional UTS Open House activities, such as the highly popular hayrides for children, the sports events and the Tong- il Moo Do martial arts demonstration, this year's Open House had a few new items on the agenda.

There were, for example, two video and slide presentations on the Unificationist view of marriage and family. Entitled "Blessing '95," the two sessions, presented by Mr. and Mrs. Farley and Betsy Jones, were well attended. A professor from Yale University even came, as well as several students from nearby BARD College and SUNY New Paltz.

To share with guests a flavor of academic life at UTS, two condensed lecture presentations were given by Dr. Thomas Selover and Mr. Robert Kittel, respectively, on "Buddhist-Christian Dialogue" and "Social Issues and the Religious Response." Following these lectures, guests were offered a campus tour.

Meanwhile, in the main dining room, a video was being played showing student activities at UTS, such as the annual Oratorical Contest, the Class Debate Contest and the Divine Principle Lecture Contest.

Also new was a concession stand offering books on Divine Principle for Children. The books, written by Mrs. Kathleen Sabo, were recently published.

But the most popular event of the day was undoubtedly the entertainment program, which for the first time in the history of Open House was held indoors.

Apart from UTS student performers, including the Music Lovers Club Band, the program also featured distinguished Manhattan Center artists.

Mr. Masahiko Harigae, a composer, singer and keyboard player who is a graduate from the Tokyo College of Music, sang two modern ballads, one composed by Bert Bacharah and another he composed himself.

Mrs. ___ and her ensemble offered an outstanding performance with three songs befitting the international character of the program: one was sung in Russian, one in Italian and one in English. Not so bad for a Japanese soprano married to a Korean.

"This was the finest entertainment we have ever had in the history of Open House," commented Sarah Witt, a veteran staff member at UTS. "Every performance was staged superbly. Even the children did a great job." She was referring to Miyoung Brogan (11 years old), who tap- danced an Irish reel, and In Sook Pearlman (8) and Namyoung Brogan (6), whose violin duet found a receptive audience.

Two other performances got the audience clapping, cheering and, sometimes, laughing: a series of traditional Slovak dances offered by a group of students, only one of which was Slovak (the others were Czech, Australian, Japanese and Filipino). Then, Dr. Thomas Selover, professor in Asian philosophy and religion, and his Chinese wife, Grace, surprised everyone with their lovely rendition of a traditional Chinese folk dance entitled "Flowers and Drums."

In all, the '95 Spring Open House and Family Festival was a joyful celebration of family values and family togetherness across racial, national and cultural boundaries.

Some disappointment was expressed, however, over the fact that there has been a declining turnout for this event in the last few years.

As UTS has embarked on "Book Two" of its history under the new presidency of Dr. Theodore Shimmyo, the Seminary may need to redefine or refocus its annual outreach festival.

True Parents Day Performance In South America - Father Establishes Artists Association For World Peace

by David Eaton-NYC

In my nearly twenty years in the Performing Arts I have often found myself in the wake of Father's providential moves as the dispensation often requires music for ceremonial or entertainment purposes. Historically, when Father shifts the providence to a new geographical region, he utilizes the performing arts to help create an environment that is conducive to witnessing and evangelizing.

Past History

In 1976 when Father's activities centered on Yankee Stadium and Washington Monument, he created the Go World Brass Band and together with the New Hope Singers and Sunburst we did extensive campaigning in order to mobilize people for those rallies.

In 1978 Father sent members of the Go World Brass Band to Boston, the New Hope Singers to Washington and Sunburst to New York as IOWCs for witnessing and fund-raising purposes. Later in 1978 Father sent members of the Brass Band to England to evangelize and begin a serious witnessing effort in Europe.

In 1979 the part of the Brass Band, Sunburst and the International Folk Ballet were sent to CARP to do a coast to coast campus tour. In the early '80s Father dispatched several rock groups to assist European CARP activities and in 1988 the New York City Symphony traveled to Korea to participate in the Seoul Olympic Arts Festival with the Universal Ballet Company.

In 1991 and 1992 I found myself in Kiev and Moscow to perform concerts with their national orchestras as the dispensation became oriented in the CIS.

When True Parents traveled to South America, I knew it was only a matter of time before the call would come to help the performing arts foundation in that part of the world. So when I received a call from Rev. Joong Hyun Pak to go to Brazil to assist in the True Parents Day celebration (March 31), it came as no surprise.

Major Church Holiday Celebrated in Brazil

Since this was the first time that True Parents would be in South America for a major church holiday, Rev. Pak thought it might be helpful for me to be in Brazil to assist the entertainment preparations.

Though our church in Brazil has many members and a beautiful church building in Sao Paulo, there hasn't as yet, been a concerted effort to develop a strong performing arts foundation there. As Father mentioned to Rev. Hyun Tae Kim, Continental Director of South America, he is accustomed to very high level productions at the Little Angels Performing Arts School in Seoul, the Manhattan Center in New York and the Kirov Academy in Washington.

The challenge to produce a program that could live up to Father's expectations was, to be sure, a daunting one, but one that all the members in the Brazilian church who worked so hard on the production could learn from.

The evening performance included a forty voice choir made up of our Brazilian members singing Exodus in Portuguese, a thirty voice choir comprised of our Japanese sisters, a local Brazilian Carnival dance troupe, our church pop group from Sao Paulo and three guest performers.

Our sister, Gloria del Paraguay (Gloria Cricsioni) sang the Korean song, Bong Sung Ah and O Sole Mio. ___ came from New York and sang the Korean song Guriun Gum Gang San and the Japanese song Akatmbo. True Mother also invited Won Ju McDevitt to sing two Korean Songs.

The Grand Finale consisted of children's songs by several of the True Grandchildren and a performance of Edelweiss by Hyun Jin Nim, Kook Jin Nim, Sun Jin Nim and Young Jin Nim. The members of True Family were enthusiastically welcomed to the stage by the nearly two thousand members in attendance.

Though there isn't as yet the technical support that is required to develop a higher standard of production, our brother Kurt Muss, the general affairs coordinator of the Sao Paulo church, has made a serious dedication to upgrade the technical standards in Brazil.

Father Establishes Artists Association for World Peace

The following morning, True Parents invited Gloria, ___ and myself to breakfast with the True Children and the continental directors. After introducing Gloria to the True Children and the international leaders, Father instructed the three of us to form a new organization in order to "create a moral revolution in the arts." Father spoke at length about the need for artists to maintain a high moral standard and remain sexually pure. He also emphasized the need for artists to be humble and not seek fame for themselves, but to use there talent to glorify God.

True Mother will be the Chairperson of this new entity and Rev. Chung Hwan Kwak would act as President and internal Abel figure. Father asked that we submit several possible names of this organization and a "pledge" that states that artists will dedicate their create efforts to the cause of world peace and use their talents with a sense of moral responsibility.

Father instructed Gloria, ___ and myself to set up concerts around the world with local performers and ensembles and then give lectures on the Divine Principle and promote the ideals of this new organization.

Upon receiving the suggested names, Rev. Kwak selected Artists Association for World Peace as the name of this new arts organization. In a subsequent meeting with Rev. Kwak in New York, it was decided that the New York City Symphony office in New York would be the initial headquarters of Artists Association and that we should begin to network with our worldwide membership who may already be involved in the arts.

Inaugural Concert Tour for Artists Association

In order to implement Father's direction ___ and myself will begin a tour of North American university campuses during May in conjunction with WORLD CARP. In a recent meeting at CARP Headquarters in New York, Jin Hun Nim suggested we use the extensive foundation that CARP has established to begin our search for talented artists who might dedicate their artistic endeavors to the ideals that AAWP is espousing.

On this tour, ___ will be accompanied by several musicians that she has recently concertized with in New York. As part of the program I will offer a speech dealing with the goals and vision of Artists Association. It is our hope that Gloria del Paraguay will be able to join us on this historic concert tour.

The tour will conclude with a performance sponsored by the New York City Symphony, WORLD CARP and AAWP on June 4th in the chapel at National Headquarters in New York City. In addition to ___, this concert will also feature the Middle Eastern and Sephartic Folk Music ensemble, Alhambra.

As Father's World Peace legacy continues to unfold, I'm sure many of us will be called upon to provide support for our brothers and sisters in many parts the world. If our history with Father tells us anything, it's that we should always be ready to go forward in the shoes of a servant, with the heart of the father...and always keep our passports valid and up to date.

On to Conduct a Concert in Paraguay

Following my stay in Brazil, I flew to Asuncion, Paraguay to conduct a concert with the Asuncion Symphony Orchestra. This concert was organized by Gloria Criscioni, who is now an official cultural ambassador for Paraguay. This concert marked the first time in nearly forty years that an American artist had performed there.

From 1954 to 1989 Paraguay was ruled by a military dictatorship and consequently most forms of artistic expression were strictly oppressed. With the election of a democratic government in 1989 there is once again an openness for artists and their work.

As it turned out, it was very big news that an American conductor from New York world make an appearance in Paraguay. At a ceremony at the Asuncion City Hall. I was made an honorary citizen of the City of Asuncion for a day. This ceremony was presided over by the newly elected mayor of Asuncion, Mr. Carlos Filizzola.

The concert hall in Asuncion is a beautifully intimate 800 seat auditorium that was built by the Japanese government as a gift to the citizens of Paraguay. The concert was sold out with many people viewing the event via closed circuit television outside the main hall.

My program consisted of The Moldau, by the Czech composer, Bedrich Smetana and Franz Josef Haydn's Symphony No. 100. In addition, Gloria del Paraguay sang arias by George Bizet and G.F. Handel as well as two well known Paraguayan folk songs.

In a dinner meeting at the American Embassy I had the occasion to speak with Mr. Robert Service, the American Ambassador to Paraguay, about future concerts with American artists there. The U.S. government is willing to co-sponsor cultural exchanges between the two countries and the political and cultural climate is such that there is now a desire on the part of the general public in Paraguay to know more about classical art and music.

There were several interesting episodes that transpired while I was in Paraguay, but one of particular interest. There is a famous cattle rancher in Paraguay by the name of Roberto Eaton. He is no relation to me, however he is the uncle of our blessed sister, Patti Eaton who now resides in Orlando, Florida. It just so happened that Patti and her husband Mark Stephan were in Paraguay visiting her uncle at the time and came to the concert after seeing an article in the local newspaper. There were so many experiences in Paraguay that made it clear to me that God is working there in a very powerful way. It is my hope to be able to do more to bring True Parent's tradition in the arts to Paraguay and to wherever the dispensation calls.
