20 Years of Ocean Providence Celebrated at Belvedere

by Karen Smith-NYC

In the pre-dawn hours of August 1st, pictures were still being put in place, banners raised, books delivered, situations reported, and despite the unfinished look, there were only hours before True Parents' car would arrive. As is customary, and always miraculous, in the last remaining minutes, the clutter disappeared and Belvedere truly lived up to its name. This time the view was not only beautiful because of the river, the old trees and recently groomed lawns and garden. It became even more beautiful because of the celebration itself. Six huge tents were raised, boats brought in on trailers, banners hoisted, balloons blown up, games erected and devised, food stands and more. Then in the hour before True Parents were to arrive, a cascade of families came across the lawns to attend the 20th Anniversary of the Oceanic Providence here in America.

Many had been working almost tirelessly for weeks and months before the cutting of the ribbon by Father, Mother, Hyo Jin Nim, Mr. Kamiyama, Mr. Oyamada, Mr. Park and Mr. Kobayashi. For some, the importance of this whole event only took shape as the tents rose, as the displays were put in place and as the extent of what has been developed in the past twenty years became apparent through this celebration. For Father and Mother, this event visually and substantially displayed the fruit of their years of sustained effort in the oceanic realms.

In the process of developing the plans for this celebration, part of the initial idea was to erect a temporary museum, and eventually to build a permanent one. So we would start with an exhibit that could eventually take its place in an Ocean Museum. As Father's seriousness regarding this celebration began to hit home, the celebration project gradually got larger and larger.

At 9:50 am, Father's and Mother's car arrived and they prayed and cut the ribbon. They then quickly walked through the exhibits before going on over to the main marquee for the main ceremony. The program commenced as Dr. Baughman led the two thousand who had gathered in a welcoming cheer and greetings. Reverend Joong Hyun Pak gave the opening prayer and Mr. Michael Runyon walked us through a history of these first twenty years. Mr. Runyon was himself involved with International Oceanic Enterprises, Inc. from its inception, informed/reminded us of the milestones of this oceanic providence. Thus showing us an outline of the development of the oceanic activities through these twenty years.

Following Mr. Runyon, Mr. Sang Kwon Park, the present president of International Oceanic Enterprises, Inc. gave his congratulatory remarks and presented a gift to Reverend and Mrs. Moon. The gift was a golden trophy of a person with a book in one hand and an fishing rod in the other, symbolizing the two main areas Father has focused on during these foundational years-education and food.

The program moved on to the keynote speech given by Reverend Moon. The heat and humidity of the day grew more intense under the tents, but little deterred Father from giving his perspective on these twenty years followed by an outline of his vision for the future. His view integrates the essential human needs for education and food through food production, international exchange and travel.

After the three celebratory cheers of "mansei," all who had come had a chance to look over the exhibits themselves, take a boat ride, sample some seafood or take their children to catch eels, fish and go on a small carnival ride. To top this off, the children could get themselves thoroughly sticky with cotton candy or Italian Ice while the parents enjoyed free lunch, courtesy of the Celebration Committee.

Having the New Hope, Sea Hope and other boats on display was important. August 1st was the day we took delivery of New Hope back in 1974 and was the beginning point of this twenty year history. Getting New Hope to Belvedere was a story in itself. It is no small vessel to trailer and it had to be brought in through the fence from Lyndhurst, as none of the gates to Belvedere were wide enough. Tearing down stone fences was no option. Even to bring in Sea Hope through the front gate (made it by an inch either side), the steel mantle had to be removed

True Parents returned to Belvedere around 5:30 p.m. to take more time to review the pictorial history of these long twenty years before returning for the evening meeting at East Garden.

On August 2nd, the exhibits were open again, there were more games and activities for children, door prizes and samples to be sampled. There was also a visit from the Irvington Fire Brigade who will be receiving a 28' Good Go for their search and rescue operations. Four people from the New York Police Department also came by to attend the Ocean Perspectives morning session which reviewed the Ocean Challenge program, what it is, what it has to offer New York's youth as it is doing in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The afternoon session of the Ocean Perspectives focused on technology and the topic of food for emergency relief. Ms. Kathy Winings from IRFF (International Relief Friendship Foundation) and Mr. David Rogers of International Seafoods of Alaska were the focus of the afternoon discussions. The net result of this symposium was that within this month of August, the first shipment of fish powder produced in Kodiak, Alaska has gone to Rawanda to be used to feed the refugees there.

Those who were part of the Celebration Committee hoped to communicate through the whole celebration, not only the honoring of the achievements of Father and Mother, but also to communicate and pass on the inspiration and substance of the oceanic foundation. The level of the foundation Father had tirelessly worked on was not just the individual level, nor was he simply fishing to feed his family or to establish an economic foundation for America or Korea or Japan. His efforts were directed at establishing the foundation needed to be an effective world parent.

The desire of a world parent is to education and feed the children of the world. This has been Father's passion, often an obscure quest to those watching him daily leave the docks here at the Hudson River or in Alaska, or Hawaii, or the Gulf of Mexico, or Florida waters, or Australia, of Korea. But as people gathered from all over the world to celebrate the culmination of these first twenty years, we also celebrated the establishment of a world-level foundation from which this heart of a world parent can multiply. It is a foundation that is not only one of prayer, vision or intent, but one of substance.

Whom You Save Is Why You Give.

The Ukraine, Bulgaria and BelaRus are areas of the world with more than their fair share of problems. Understanding their history and their peoples is the first step towards raising awareness of the disadvantaged there. As a core value, voluntary service is fundamental to liberal Democracy. IRFF addresses this by being multilocal-that is, getting in touch with local sentiments in Bulgaria like OAP's in care- in touch with the needy in the Ukraine like disadvantaged children in care and in touch with the fragile in BelaRus like those inflicted with cancer near Chernobyl.

Whom you save is why many of us give. It's a core belief, identifying needs and altering our mindset to relieve the poor. As an international charity, with offices in 10 western and eastern countries as well as the USA and Japan, being multilocal means sharing what we have as people, when we have it, with others. That often demands giving all. The anguish in and around the exclusion zone in Chernobyl, children and OAP's critically ill, in need of supplies of medications, that just trickle. As global citizens with a conscience and professional staff of aid agencies, trying to save one more person. Sounds like a job for the creative and conceptually inspired leader. Could this be you?

In Bulgaria, hours are spent just trying to define terms, like volunteer. There is no contemporary translation in Bulgaria for words like sponsor or volunteer. But after working with local people, attempting to understand local sentiment, these new words for them are no longer confusing; indeed, they become solutions to some of that society's problems. When people work together as partners in the cause, they enable each other to be linked with why they are giving and the impact even one person can have. Watching CNN can give you a glimpse that even as far as these Balkan nations have come, the longest part of the road is still ahead.

A Vision of Peace and Hope

The mildly endearing chaos one encounters upon first arriving in the Balkans later becomes distinctly unfunny. But that's what a transformative experience is all about: dealing with events plunged into disarray while maintaining hope and a vision for a better outcome. What comes out of all this is sustainable development. Sustainable development must be central, in that it permeates all areas of society-it must be comprehensive, in that it involves all levels of economic, political and academic bodies-and it must be community-based, in that usually local structures and organizations will overcome the barriers to change.

The Screwtape Letters Revisited

My Dear Nephew Wormwood,

I note with grave displeasure that your patient has made contact with the dreaded followers of Moon. Tut, tut! That will never do! Even the dimmest student of Temptation cannot fail to learn that, above all, patients must be kept away from anything to do with Unificationism and Divine Principle! Do you not know that these despicable creatures are by far the greatest enemies of our father down below...much worse than even the ardent Christian, for through their "revelation"-as they call it-of Divine Principle, they more than anybody else have the chance to know our communal enemy, and worse still...they are on to our father.

Fortunately, all is not yet lost. I presume that you have already alerted your patient's attention to the media, where as you know we have many allies. I see that your patient is a real family man, and that his Moonie spiritual parent commented that this was a good thing. So it is-not for them, but for us. Make absolutely sure, before they managed to get him on one of those dreaded two-day workshops, that his attention is drawn to the usual horror stories. You complain that there are no current ones. That is no excuse for idleness. Even if he has not heard them before, most folk have. Get into one of his family or, better still, a close friend, one whose opinion the patient has always valued, and get them to spill the beans-and don't forget to promote a very concerned look.

If that fails, don't despair! Your next port of call is the members themselves. Personally I don't favor old Slubgob's rather barbaric method of striking the spiritual parent down with flu or some other nasty ailment. You can try simple little ploys at first, such as the filling the SP's mind with other things which are even more important than the patient. Impress upon his mind that he is not spending enough time with his family. This witnessing is all very well...but if one doesn't have a secure base, how can one give out to others?

I note also that the SP has a dicey relationship with his Central Figure. Above all, that can work to our advantage, if handled correctly. The SP-you say-is older than the Central Figure who is not even a citizen! Splendid! Bring the age-old racial ploys into play, but remember to suggest them rather than make them too clear. If the SP, by any lucky chance, forgets to pray before the Sunday service (which will render him relatively protectionless by the Enemy), you can fairly easily get him to be bored by the CF's sermon. The boredom will cause him to be critical of the CF. Get him to think that the CF's command of the English language is abominable and, as such, is losing them members. Above all, whatever else happens, don't allow them to get together and talk about the patient. Communication, under the Enemy's roof, is the worst thing that can happen at this point.

I hope that you have paid good attention to this letter. In your next letter, I trust that you will have made the necessary progress.

Yours affectionately, Your Uncle Screwtape.

The Last Shall Be First

by Charles E. Cook

Congress in March of this year voted overwhelmingly to designate July 28, 1994 as National Parents' Day. Literally thousands of North Dakotans learned of this on Saturday, July 23. It was on this day that through the inspiration of Betsy Orman blessed families in North Dakota worked together to prepare a beautiful float for the annual North Dakota State Fair "Parade of Champions."

Gene Immel, "Hometowning It" Carrington, ND, with his wife, Mary Jo, and three children, inspired our float theme, "Parents are the Key to the Future," which fit in well with the overall parade theme of "Celebrate a Vision for the '90s."

Our theme was carried out with a seven foot open door bearing the words "The Future," having been unlocked by a five foot long key lettered with the word "Parents". All of this, plus four parents and eight children on a twelve foot decorate trailer. Gene Immel and Mrs. Norma Cook distributed Parents' Day information along the entire three mile parade route.

The Immel, Orman and Cook families rode on the float. What a great joy to see the hundreds of children along the parade route scampering with great delight to receive the candy and balloons being dispensed with equal delight from our float by our blessed children (ages 2-7 years).

The parade concluded at the State Fairgrounds with Governor Ed Schafer warmly greeting our float. He informed us that his wife and ND Lt. Gov. Rosemarie Myrdal were working on a state project for National Parents' Day which fits in nicely with this year having been designated "The Year of the Family" here in North Dakota.

Although not originally designated to be the final parade entry, through a miscommunication with the parade committee this is where we ended up, #219 A. Not only did we have a lot of fun working jointly on a project but with a minimum of time and expense we could carry a vital message to the people of our state.

The Dove

by Kevin J. Brabazon - Harlem, Manhattan NY

Beautiful little Dove,
How high can you fly?
Is it as high as an eagle?
Or maybe a seagull.
Do you ponder your popularity?
Or wonder your similarity?
You may not be like any other,
But to me you are a brother.
You are still that special Dove,
Who will always bring True Love.

The Divine Order for Men and Women Part III

by Jon & Christen Quinn

The ideology of Patriarchy (men leading) is attacked by Feminists and Communists. In 1848 Marx and Engels published The Communist Manifesto and the Feminists published "The Seneca Falls Declaration" in Seneca Falls, New York. Both had the goal of destroying Patriarchy. To accomplish this their strategy was to get women into the marketplace. For Patriarchy to work the man must be the sole provider. He has the final say on decisions made in his home. If he has earned all the money, then he has authority. If the wife works then the roles are blurred, and he becomes weak.

Like the Feminists, Engels says women are slaves to men, and when they are taken out of the home to earn money then they will be free. He says that when "The man took command in the home the woman was degraded and reduced to servitude; she became the slave of his lust and a mere instrument for the production of children ... within the family he is the bourgeois and his wife represents the proletariat." Women, he says, are unpaid servants who have talents that can only be used if she is earning money in "social production" and "public industry." Like Feminists, he disparages homemaking saying that the wife's household labor "became a private service; the wife became the head servant, excluded from all participation in social production."

Michael Levine, in his anti-feminist book Feminism and Freedom says, "There is no doubt that the founders of Marxism were feminists. In The Origin of the Family, Engels wrote: `It will be plain that the first condition for the liberation of the wife is to bring the whole female sex into public industry and that this in turn demands the abolition of the monogamous family as the economic unit of society. Monogamous marriage comes on the scene as the subjugation of the one sex by the other. ... The emancipation of woman will be possible only when...domestic work no longer claims anything but an insignificant portion of her time'."

Feminists still honor him. In a recent book by a feminist titled The Creation of Patriarchy, the author praises Marx and Engels saying, "Marxist analysis has been very influential in determining the questions asked by feminist scholars. The basic work of reference is Frederick Engels' Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State. ... Engels made major contributions to our understanding of women's position in society and history."

Christianity failed not only to stand up to Communism, but to stop the advance of Feminism. The Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville traveled in America in the 1830s and wrote the classic Democracy in America. His insights were correct. He saw how great America was, but he was a European and had experienced the social experiments of Feminism. He knew this would destroy America if we adopted this deadly ideology. He warns that if we take women out of the home and "mix them in business" we will produce "weak men and disorderly women": "There are people in Europe who, confounding together the different characteristics of the sexes, would make man and woman into beings not only equal but alike. They would give to both the same functions, impose on both the same duties, and grant to both the same rights; they would mix them in all things-their occupations, their pleasures, their business. It may readily be conceived that by thus attempting to make one sex equal to the other, both are degraded, and from so preposterous a medley of the works of nature nothing could ever result but weak men and disorderly women." He praises America for not having weak men and disorderly women. He appreciates America for not only using distinct division of labor in industry, but between men and women as well: "It is not thus that the Americans understand that species of democratic equality which may be established between the sexes. They admit that as nature has appointed such wide differences between the physical and moral constitution of man and woman, her manifest design was to give a distinct employment to their various faculties; and they hold that improvement does not consist in making beings so dissimilar do pretty nearly the same things, but in causing each of them to fulfill their respective tasks in the best possible manner. The Americans have applied to the sexes the great principle of political economy which governs the manufacturers of our age, by carefully dividing the duties of man from those of woman in order that the great work of society may be the better carried on...."

De Tocqueville concludes his book by saying that because American women are truly feminine, America is prospering: "As for myself, I do not hesitate to avow that although the women of the United States are confined within the narrow circle of domestic life, and their situation is in some respects one of extreme dependence, I have nowhere seen woman occupying a loftier position; and if I were asked, now that I am drawing to the close of this work, in which I have spoken of so many important things done by the Americans, to what the singular prosperity and growing strength of that people ought mainly to be attributed, I should reply: to the superiority of their women."

De Tocqueville's prophecy has come true. American men are weak, and American women are disorderly. Father says this many times. Here are three representative quotes: 1) "in this country women have a commanding voice at home. In a typical American home the wife is master of the house, while the husband is like a servant; his shoulder are hunched over and he is always checking to see what his wife's mood is." 2) "Because of the fall of man the chain of order and command has been completely reversed, and now men follow behind women, particularly with regard to love affairs. Men have become so helpless, and women always take command." 3) "Now the time has come for women to restore their original role, particularly American women. Nowadays American men just do not want to get married and become the slaves of domineering women."

Like a magnifying glass focused to start a fire, Satan focused on the goal of putting women in the work place. We now have a unisex society which has no division of labor-no clear differences between men and women. The final result of the blurring of roles is homosexuality. Now we have a weak president who believes deeply in the value of "gay rights," and a first lady who has a career. We have hit rock bottom. Feminism, like Communism, is like cancer that grows until it destroys even itself. It is a bankrupt, barren ideology. Like Communism, it has no redeeming value whatsoever.

Betty Friedan reignited the Feminist movement and helped flamed the sexual revolution of the 1960s with her bestseller The Feminine Mystique in 1963. She inspired countless women to become Feminist such as Marlo Thomas who, after reading the book, influenced a producer to create a TV show. Her popular series "That Girl" was about a woman who gives up marriage for her hope of a successful career. How many millions of men and women were subconsciously influenced by this and other Feminist shows?

Today we have the popular TV show "Roseanne". In Roseanne Arnold's autobiography she tells of how she became a liberal and a feminist She disparages her former life as a housewife saying, "There was a time when I was the Queen of the Barefoot and Pregnant. I would wait all day until Bill would come home, feeling excited about being able to speak to another adult, to exercise my brain." She found friends at a feminist bookstore. They spent endless hours hating patriarchy, and she dreamed of becoming a feminist writer. She became a comedienne whose basis of humor was to attack Helen Andelin's Fascinating Womanhood-mocking her coined phrase for a housewife being a "domestic goddess." Roseanne is the epitome of de Tocqueville's "disorderly woman." Her book is just one more in the avalanche of books being taught in Women's Studies courses in universities.

Betty and Roseanne got divorces, and Marlo decided to become barren. These are typical results for those who follow this ideology. Friedan focused on the goal of women competing with men in the workplace so they could have "value". Like Engels, she attacks homemaking and glorifies the career: "Women, as well as men, can only find their identity in work that uses their full capabilities. A woman cannot find her identity through others-her husband, her children. She cannot find it in the dull routine of housework .... even if a woman does not have to work to eat, she can find identity only in work that is of real value to society-work for which our society pays."

Friedan and other feminists were bored with being a housewife in the 1950s, but God's plan is not for women to live an isolated life as only a homemaker. As wholesome as the all-American image of Leave It To Beaver may have seemed, the Cleavers were too individualistic. Betty, Marlo and Roseanne would have found greater happiness if they had created a happy marriage and family and fulfilled their responsibilities at home, and then had adult interaction in a spiritual community working with other women (not with other men) to help each other and to volunteer to help those in need.

Instead, Friedan founded the Feminist organization National Organization for Women (NOW). To counter their educational and legal efforts, Beverly LaHaye started Concerned Women for America (CWA). The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Mrs. LaHaye has a great marriage. Ms. Friedan doesn't have any. If you want a happy marriage learn from someone who has one. Mrs. LaHaye teaches that a woman having a career hurts both men and women. She writes in The Restless Woman that the workplace is one of "fierce competition," and women do not belong there: "A division is created between males and females when they are forced to compete with each other. The relationship between men and women should be one of cooperation, not fierce competition. The tendency of women to compete in the work world with men results in their masculinization. ... A masculine man is attracted by the feminine characteristics in a woman-qualities such as gentleness and virtue. He's not seeking a clone of himself. The attraction that men and women have for each other is in their "differentness"-not their sameness.

True Parents give broad general principles. It is our responsibility to fill in the details. For example, Father taught against Communism. He explained that atheist writers such as Marx and Engels were wrong. Dr. Pak and others then wrote the CAUSA manual, which is hundreds of pages long and goes into detail explaining and refuting the many points of Communist thinkers.

We won the battle over Communism on the national and world levels. Now True Parents are working tirelessly to counter the teachings that are destroying the family, i.e., Feminism. The primary purpose of CAUSA was to crush Communism-Satan's external, public ideology; the purpose of WFWP is to crush Feminism-Satan's internal, private ideology.

Just as we wrote the CAUSA manual, WFWP must write a book to present all the arguments of those on the Cain side, refute them and then explain in detail how to create ideal families-for example, how to live as trinities. But for now, two excellent books on male-female relationships are Aubrey Andelin's Man of Steel and Velvet and Helen Andelin's Fascinating Womanhood.

Rev. Moon's Church Gives Boat To Fire Squad

by Rob Ryser-Tarrytown Daily News

This item appeared in the Tarrytown Daily News, Aug. 4, 1994. Reprinted with permission.

The Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church has donated a tuna boat to the Irvington Fire Department's river rescue squad. "The offer comes straight from Reverend Moon's heart," church member Dominic Barber said. "Everyone said we should give them a new one, but they asked us for a used boat." Moon has a home in Irvington and the Unification Church's spiritual center is on the 200-acre Belvedere estate in Tarrytown.

The village was notified Tuesday that it would get the 28-foot fiberglass tuna vessel. A new boat would have cost the village about $50,000.

Moon originally proposed giving the boat to firefighters several years ago, but the village declined the offer, village Administrator Stephen McCabe said.

Recently, volunteers remembered the offer and asked the church if it was still good, Fire Chief Michael Colantuono said.

McCabe and Colantuono went to look at the boat Tuesday, when it was on display at the South Broadway estate in Tarrytown. The boat was part of an exhibit called the 20th Anniversary of the Ocean Providence. The exhibit showed how church members are using ocean resources to benefit Third World countries.

"It is very seaworthy," McCabe said of the boat. "It is sturdy and in good shape. We looked at it and said `yes'."

The Fire Department's current 16-foot river rescue boat is too small to carry more than several divers at a time and too small to transport a victim back to shore, McCabe said.

"We're growing out of it," Colantuono said.

The Irvington Fire Department is in demand during the summer because it is one of the few departments in Westchester County with a diving squad and river rescue team.

So far this summer, the department has responded to a dock fire in Hastings-on-Hudson, a tugboat fire between Tarrytown and Piermont, several rescue calls at the Tappan Zee Bridge, and a homicide investigation where partial remains of a victim were found in the Hudson River.

"We've been pretty busy," Colantuono said. "I think it's a great thing what the Unification Church is doing for us."

Church spokesman Peter Ross said the donation was agreed to verbally as the church's oceanic celebration was ending. He said the theme of the celebration was using untapped resources of the ocean to benefit needy people.

Among the varied ocean-related enterprises begun privately by members of the church, for example, is the development of a protein-rich fish powder that can be added to flour for hunger relief missions, Ross said. The actual transfer of the boat from the church to the village may not happen for another month, McCabe said.

The village will pay to have the vessel painted and fitted with special rescue equipment before it is called on for service, the administrator added.
