Reverend Moons Son Dies Of Heart Attack

Christopher Davies
March 17, 2008

Hyo Jin Moon, the eldest son of Reverend and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, founders of the Universal Peace Federation, died of a heart attack on March 17th in Seoul, Korea.

He was born December 3, 1962 in Korea, but grew up in the USA, his parents having based themselves in the New York area.

For many years he ran Manhattan Center Studios, a state-of-the-art multimedia facility in New York City, favored by leading musicians and orchestras both for recording and televised events. He was also the founder of MC Korea and MC Japan.

The 45-year-old Korean worked for 10 years (1985-94) as the first president of the World Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (World CARP). During his presidency, one of the defining moments was the 1987 4th World CARP Convention in Berlin. Hyo Jin Moon led 1,000 students on a memorable march to the Berlin Wall, where he delivered a stirring speech, calling on Mr. Gorbachev to be a righteous man and tear down the wall.

Hyo Jin Moon was an inspirational musician, performer and multimedia executive producer. An intensely passionate singer and lead guitarist, who found Korean more expressive than English, he produced over a dozen CD's and created a catalog of thousands of compositions. He continued to perform in live concert tours in Asia each spring up until his passing.

He was also dedicated to media and charitable projects aimed at creating a positive influence on the culture, especially for young people and families.

In 2006, he traveled to Africa together with his mother, Hak Ja Han Moon, where he delivered public addresses in several nations as part of a 180-city world peace tour.

He regularly spoke at early morning Sunday meetings in upstate New York, drawing many by his very down to earth reflections of life, including his experiences of dealing with racial and religious prejudice and the challenge of emulating his parents, whom he clearly adored. His last speech before leaving for a business trip to Korea was on March 9, his topic "Commitment": "life is about learning something and it is short; how do I get better? Following the basics; doing the basics, doing what is right, no other way."

He leaves his wife, Yun Ah Choi, and four children as well as five children from a previous marriage.

Rev. Jack Corley is the MC. All welcome Hyo-Jin-nim and Yeon Ah-nim and offer a standing bow.

Hyo-Jin-nim bows to the audience before he approaches the stage.

Good morning (good morning)

Is everybody here committed to something? (Yes.)

When you think about commitment, what does it mean to you?

Why do you want to commit to something?

Because it defines you.

Any kind of commitment that you make will define you, and you'll be judged. That's why you commit to something.

Because you know that life is about learning something and it is short. Very short (laughing).

How about what makes you good, what makes you right?

Even in business. I'll be away for about two weeks. Okay?

If people give you money you have responsibility; you have commitment.

You have to make them profit. Otherwise I don't think you're going to get another opportunity.

So even just dealing with money, you're committed; that's what it is.

Now think about yourself. What are you thinking? What terms of thinking are you committed to? What are you reaching out to understand?

Even if you do understand something, achieving it is very difficult.

Now, take that to the next level, spirituality. How are you going to answer that question?

You have to have spirit, mind and body together to be perfect. That's crazy stuff!

That's what you have to do, basically. So, where do you stand?

You don't want to look at the person next to you. Answer that to yourself. You ask that question to yourself and you answer it to yourself, and that's where you stand.

Have I seen crap? Yes I have. I'll probably see more. (Laughing)

That's where I stand.

And how do I get better?

Pauses and answers in a whisper:

Following the basics; doing the basics, doing what is right, no other way.

Do you feel big sometimes? Yes, but who cares if it isn't real? It's about "you."

Do you think that anything worth living for is just thinking about ME?

That's not the lesson that we're learning. Otherwise the reason that this world sucks is that.

It's not about me. It's about us.

That's why it hurts. Because if we are "I" to start from, we have to understand "we."

What is family anyway?

Man and woman come together and make family. What is that?

Is it "I" or is it "we?"

Then you will die. No matter how great you think you are, you will die.

Anything that makes you arrogant, keep it to yourself. Okay?

I'm a very arrogant man. Keep it to yourself.

If you love your children, if you have children, if you have a family, that's what you do to be a good parent. Everybody does that.

Try to be good, and keep it to yourself. You want to be arrogant; keep it to yourself.

We need commitment because it defines you, and in judgment you had better know what that is.

Okay.

Why Do We Want To Love Somebody?

Rev. Andrew Compton is the MC. All welcome Hyo-Jin-nim and Yeon Ah-nim and offer a standing bow.

Hyo-Jin-nim bows to the audience as he approaches the stage.

Good morning (good morning)

Why do we want to love somebody?

Why do you want to be loved?

What is love to you?

What do you love?

And if you have a definition of love that you want, how are you going to get it?

There's need and want in life that drives us in action to make life. That's what we do because of that, no other reason.

So what is it?

Love is, based on history, and what is there that teaches us that it is the highest, that's what we seek. We all want to be the best in whatever we do. You want to be number one! We don't want to be number two.

Well if you live long enough, you want to be in the rankings, at least. Because it's not that simple to always be number one.

So what is love?

What is love for you?

What do you want, why do you need, why do you want love?

If you can't answer that to yourself, you haven't understood about yourself.

Because the next question, the next step is, if you need and want love you're not going to have it alone.

Then something else comes into your picture, and when it comes, what do you think is going to happen to you?

What word will happen to you?

It's called sacrificed.

And that's going to mess you up for a long time, until you get it right.

That word is going to mess you up until you get it right.

I know what I want. No, I know what I need and I know what I want.

Sacrifice? That's a different story.

That's going to mess you up.

So how are you going to make that right?

There's no magic answer.

You have to persevere.

You have to understand where you stand and you have to persevere.

That's the only answer!

Till you make it right, YOU make it right.

Because in the end, you stand alone in judgment. (a very long and emotional pause)

I wish I could have had a little more time with my son.

I'm not the kind of guy who regrets things, but that's one thing that I regret that's going to hurt me to the day I die.

Why? Because I loved somebody.

You don't live that long you guys.

I will be fifty soon, you know.

I'm trying to take care of myself, you know, but in a few more years you'll be dead! (Laughing) Right?

What the heck is that?

What are we learning in this life.

Find yourself, okay?

And die well.

Because you don't live that long.

And I hope that you want to be good, okay?

Because we can learn from each other, okay?

Find good, find you, and die well.

(Taps podium once)

Okay.

What is Love?

Rev. Andrew Compton is the MC. All welcome Hyo-Jin-nim and Yeon Ah-nim and offer a standing bow.

Hyo-Jin-nim bows to the audience as he approaches the stage.

How is everybody? (Good, good morning!)

Good morning.

When you think about love, what is love?

You will die for love or you will kill for love.

It can happen, right?

When you really love something, it makes you want to die for it; at the same time in the extreme opposite, you will kill for it.

That's what love is. Right?

And everything that exists under the Sun pretty much has that extreme stemming from it.

Why is it like that? -- Why is it like that?

Is it for you, or it's me; it's that stuff. It's that struggle; it's that basic struggle. (From this point Hyo-Jin-nim speaks with much emotion and tears.)

I'll die for something, or I'll kill for something. It's that stuff.

It's "we" or "I" because when I'm dying for something, it's not "me" it's "we."

It's as simple as that; everything starts from that. And that you need to know how to answer. That's your quest in this short life.

However (long do) you think that you can live. IT'S SHORT! IT'S NOT LONG ENOUGH FOR ME!

I know I'm dying, getting closer to my death than to my living, and that's for SURE!

And that is the truth that I can never deny.

And that's how it begins.

Know what you want to do with that life.

Is it going to be "we" or is it going to be "I"?

You make the choice, and understand that life is what you got, and what you got it isn't that much.

And that's where we're equal. It doesn't matter what you got; it really doesn't matter.

Okay.

You have to do your own thinking.

Look, I'm not going to read a story book for you. Okay?

You make your own stories; that's your life.

You write your own songs. You write your own stories.

That's all we do. That's the best we can do. And hopefully somebody can be inspired by it.

Okay?

All I can do is what I do. That's it.

It's up to you.

So you take care. Okay?

I'll be gone for a few weeks so I'll see you later when I come back. Okay?

Take care of your self. Okay?

How Are You Going to Change the World?

Rev. Andrew Compton is the MC. All welcome Hyo-Jin-nim and Yeon Ah-nim and offer a standing bow.

Hyo-Jin-nim bows to the audience as he approaches the stage.

How are you?

Good morning. (Good morning)

Happy New Year! (Happy New Year) (This is Hyo-Jin-nim's first Belvedere speech this year)

One more year is gone; what does that mean? (Laughing)

How many years do we have? OK.

It depends on how you think about the way things are and what you are in control of in reality.

How are you going to change the world?

Do you know how to change yourself?

Do you know that your ways are the right way?

Are you absolutely sure that what ever that you think that you have talent in, do you know what perfection is in it?

Are you a master of that; can you control it?

How are you going to change the world? You ask yourself.

We're trying, but how are we going to do it in actuality?

You have your ways, right? You have to start from there.

You have to change the ways of other people.

If you're going to change the world, you have to know what the ways of the world are, (the ways) of the people that you're focusing on, and from there try to make a difference.

What is your way? How do you live? What do you live for? What is your goal?

I know that you want to be somebody. Everybody wants to be somebody.

So what is your way? There are many, many ways.

That's the problem. We have to know all those ways to change the world.

Yes it comes into cliques so to speak. It clumps into some kind of tribal reality. But that's what you need to know to change the world.

You have to know human ways; otherwise you will not change the world. Right?

And that's what we need to focus on; otherwise it's meaningless.

I'm trying to understand my little kids okay? I'm sure that they have a hard time understanding me. (Laughter) A crazy guy like me.

But that's the way it works you have to know humans are the ways we are. The more we know (the more) we can get closer to that ultimate goal that we all talk about in religion. (Hyo-Jin-nim laughs.)

And where do you start? If you ask yourself "I start now" what can you do? That's what you do. You think from there, one step at a time until it gets holy and mighty.

All the time start from that; that's where you start and you build it from there.

See if it works. Try it out on people that you know.

I don't know you. You don't know me. But you have people that you know around you. Start there.

Try it out.

Change the world.

Okay? (long pause and sigh)

OK, take care.

(taps podium once)
