Before I talk about the Purpose of the Messiah, I think it's important for us to recognize the existence of two intelligences.
According to the Principle, the first intelligence is the inner spiritual intelligence, which is realized through spiritual truth. The second intelligence is physical intelligence, which is realized through physical means or tactile truth. Just as we gain greater physical intelligence by understanding physical truth, we can ultimately gain spiritual intelligence as we truly tap into spiritual truth, which means God's will, or the inner desire of God. We all have some concept of right and wrong, and we can perceive signs of goodness and be inspired by certain people and events in our lives to commit ourselves to a life of faith. Those receiving inspiration which motivates them to become one with Heavenly Father are those who have put themselves in a position that enables them to understand greater and greater spiritual truth.
In order for us to truly understand Heavenly Father, first we must know God's will -- not just as a general idea, but the intricate details of how He intends to realize His ideals. Through Principle we understand that God needs mankind to realize His ideal purpose of creation. Man was created to become an ideal object to God and be able to receive and return the innermost essence of God. As man fulfills that responsibility of becoming God's object, he puts himself in the position to receive Heavenly Father and His truth.
I emphasize this because becoming the object to Heavenly Father has everything to do with improving our spiritual life and with understanding the Principle. I'm realizing more and more how important it is for me to become an absolute object to God and how with that attitude and commitment, I can gain spiritual truth and have more power to act.
What is becoming a true object? It means to give oneself completely, having an absolute faith in Heavenly Father and the works of True Parents. Once you start to dedicate yourself to that kind of lifestyle, your spiritual intelligence will expand.
Many of you understand conceptually, but you may lack deep spiritual wisdom because you simply don't practice your understanding enough. Or you don't have sufficient belief to push yourself to endure the process required to reach this position of understanding God's truth. You can't stop at just realizing what truth is. To absorb that truth into your intelligence, you have to live it. Without experience, it is not going to be yours. It will always be something conceptual rather than innate. Only through experience can you truly distinguish a false notion from a true notion. You have to apply it, and your heart has to be within that process. Your mind and body must absolutely unite in making the concept work in reality in order for the understanding to become part of you.
When Father talks, there is a resonance. The quality of love has resonating power. When something resonates, it is not only heard or seen, but also felt. Would you like to just hear about the experience of love, or would you rather feel love? What will make you understand more deeply? Without experiencing that kind of emotion that occurs when you embrace your spouse, you don't understand the deep, inner meaning of love. You have to feel it.
If I want my voice to resonate, I have to be in the kind of space where sound will reverberate. Through that reverberation, I will not just hear the sound but I will feel it. Then I like it more. That's why when I listen to my music I want to turn it up, because I don't just want to hear it, I want to feel it. I want to feel all the high and low frequency notes impacting on my body. It's exciting. This increases my experience of appreciating that music.
If ideals dwell within me, and if I want to share them with someone, my voice reverberating out into the universe, then I have to be where the voice of true love can resonate. I must find that ideal space where I can speak ideal things and where my ideal words will resonate.
Where do you think that space would be? True love exists only within God. If I want my true love to be ringing all over the place, I must find that space within God. That is why I want to become an object to God. Once we put ourselves in that position, we can start not just hearing our voice, but feeling our voice, feeling our emotions, and truly feeling and understanding our inner desires.
Only through experience can you truly taste and feel the love of God. Once you feel it, once you touch your wife, once you feel the great joy that lies behind love, you start craving it. You can't live without it. You must put yourself in the position to experience not just physical love, but heavenly spiritual love. I don't want to stress physical love; it's like the blueprint -- the experience that we feel physically should be felt spiritually. Once you experience such joy and happiness fully, it's not going to go away -- it is yours. If Adam and Eve had grown up to be the ideal object to God, that experience would never die. It would overwhelm them eternally.
Many of you are caught up in false experiences and manifestations. It is very difficult for you to break away from the bondage that has been manifested within you. But God planned our primary experience to be an ideal one. Only through the experience of spiritual truth can we become one with Heavenly Father and realize the value of True Parents. Only through responsibility can we attain God's will and become God's children. God wanted man to develop the same creativity that He had. Man's responsibility is to make that ideal choice to adopt the will of God and act upon that commitment to ultimately become like God. How can you receive God without becoming like Him? How can you experience the same love that I am going to experience without having the same faculties as I have? It is impossible.
The Third Blessing promises that through becoming perfect and being married and multiplying, centering on God, you are to have dominion over the creation. How are you going to take that responsibility without having the ability to embrace and embody Heavenly Father?
When people really get serious about Principle study, they are going to emphasize the Korean version of the Principle much more than the translated one. Unless you understand Korean you are going to be left behind. Actually, the meaning is even more specifically expressed in the version with Chinese characters. I always refer back and forth between the Chinese version and the Korean one. To not know Korean is a very serious matter, especially if you are a Principle lecturer.
The purpose of the coming of the Messiah is to establish the everlasting Kingdom of God here on earth. But in a deeper sense, the purpose of the Messiah is to bring both spiritual and physical salvation to fallen man. Most Christians believe that Jesus came to die for the sins of the world. By shedding his blood he would redeem the sin of man, and ultimately uplift fallen man to the standard of God.
This leaves a very big question. To understand the responsibility of the Messiah we must first understand the significance of the two-sided predictions concerning Jesus. In Isaiah 9:6-7 it was promised he would reign over the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called 'Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.' Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."
But according to Isaiah 53, Jesus' life was to be one of suffering and great tribulations. Why the difference? [Because God did not know what man would do when Jesus was sent.] When Jesus came people would ultimately accept him or betray him. It was man's responsibility, a point repeated over and over again throughout the Principle.
At the end Jesus knew his dying on the cross was unavoidable. But at the same time he bore the responsibility of fulfilling the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. The purpose of the Messiah is to save mankind, not just physically, not just spiritually, but both. What course must he take? If I am to die, and if I have a portion of responsibility still to fulfill, then I must do everything within my power to go as close as possible toward reaching my goal. How could Jesus, who could not bring the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, at least bring about the spiritual salvation of man? [By accepting whatever the final course was and not rebelling against God.] Okay.
What I just read in Isaiah is very significant. Jesus was to represent God and become the everlasting Father in the everlasting Kingdom. Jesus won a foothold on the earth because he fulfilled the role of absolute Son. He gave his life for God, not just for our sins. Restoration has to do with fulfilling God's ideal. He died, not just for the sinners and whoremongers, but primarily so that his Father's suffering would be lessened. Don't ever put him in a lesser state by saying that he merely died for our sins.
When Jesus died on the cross, he asked Heavenly Father, "Why are You abandoning me?" According to the Level Four Divine Principle Lecture Guide, what was God's motive? [Because God was abandoned by Adam, when He saw Jesus dying on the cross, He had to abandon him so that Jesus could pay indemnity for Adam.] The significant aspect is that Jesus wanted to comfort God's heart by putting himself in the same lonely place occupied by God when Adam and Eve abandoned Him.
A teacher bears a responsibility to the pupil. Through the example of the teacher, the students will learn what is right and wrong. The question going through the disciples' minds as Jesus was being crucified was: If Jesus came to earth to become the Lord of Lords and King of Kings, why is he dying on the cross? Everyone must have thought: "He is not the Messiah. He is nobody." But even under those circumstances, Jesus knew who he was. He was the teacher of his disciples. He knew the difficult course they would have in the future. He said to them, "If you want to follow me, you have to abandon everything and ultimately bear the cross." Even in his last moment on earth, he taught the disciples with his dying breath to obey the will of God by setting an example for them to follow. Fie died for the sake of God's ideal.
Of course he knew how much God was suffering inside. If God sends His son to earth to become Lord of Lords, as described in Isaiah and Luke, do you think He is having a jolly good time seeing His son being crucified by these sinners? All the people who were prepared, including John the Baptist, failed their responsibility. John knew Jesus was the Messiah. He confessed it in John 1:33, and in John 1:23 he acknowledged he was sent beforehand by God to prepare the way for the Messiah. He knew his responsibility but failed in it because he couldn't see beyond Jesus' external appearance and position.
There is a parable that Jesus gave in Matt. 25:1-13:
"Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom." There the five wise ones were waiting with a lamp and oil, but the foolish ones were waiting with just a lamp. When the bridegroom came, the five foolish ones asked, "Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out." But the wise ones answered saying, "Perhaps there will be not enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves."
While the five foolish ones went out to buy the oil, the bridegroom came and "those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut." Afterward the other maidens returned saying, "'Lord, Lord, open to us.' But he replied, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.'"
I read this verse because it has everything to do with the Blessing. Do you know what the Blessing means and how important it is? Through you, your lineage will ultimately receive redemption. Through the Blessing you can become citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven as those beings who existed at the time of the Garden of Eden should have been. You represent the lineage which will ultimately bring great joy and diversity to Heavenly Father. Within eternal love there are so many beautiful things. That is why human beings are here on this earth.
How do you become an ideal being? Your physical body must unite with your Shim Jung; there must be harmony between the sung sang in the subject position and the hyung sang in the object position.
What does that mean? Your spirit, or your original mind, must always unite with the will of God. It longs for union with Heavenly Father. The yearning to become one with God and to see oneself as the son of God should overwhelm one's physical self. We must put ourselves in that kind of absolute object position to Heavenly Father, saying, "You are my God, my Father in Heaven. I am going to love You no matter what. I want to dwell within You and I want You to dwell within me forever. We are inseparable beings. It means everything for me to have You in my presence, in my life, in my body. I am willing to do everything for You. Just like You, God, I want to make this world an absolutely pure world of goodness. I am willing to sacrifice my life. If You are willing to suffer for the sake of that ideal, I am willing to suffer, paying any price that a man can bear. There is no limit to my yearning to become part of You and to bring fulfillment to Your ideal expectation."
For us to have the Kingdom of Heaven in the spirit world, there has to be a Kingdom of Heaven on earth. God exists in the Kingdom of Heaven. Why do we need True Parents? Because if we are to have the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, God's presence must be here, and that requires True Parents.
In the spirit world the main emphasis is unity. How can we unite the different races? Only through blood lineages. That's why True Parents exist, so that through them all people can be engrafted into God's lineage, physically becoming bonded through the blood lineage. That's the purpose of the Messiah. If you expect the Kingdom of Heaven on earth to exist, there has to be the presence of True Parents.
In the eyes of God all of us have equal value. But you must realize that in order for ideal relationships to exist within our lives there has to be subject and object within your marriage, at your workplace, between brothers and sisters, and so on. As it says in I Cor. 15:41: "There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory."
The mission that has been given to you by True Father is very important. All of you first have the responsibility of understanding the Principle completely. To understand, you must put yourself in the ideal object's position. To experience the ideals of God you must put yourself in the right position. Nobody in this room is excluded from that responsibility, starting with me. I must learn to become an ideal object to my Father. That means I must possess within myself the unchanging, absolute and everlasting quality of love. I always have to check myself and clear out whatever blurs my path to become that object to my Father. When I put myself in those shoes, when I live it, then I will experience the ideals of God.
But living that ideal is difficult, I can tell you with certainty. I want to help Father. I feel what he feels. He has a physical body; it is limited. But there is so much to be done, and so little is being done. Somebody has to reflect his desires. Because. I realize my Father's heart, I have to go out of my way to do these things. Without having a clear direction, your efforts are meaningless. In revolting against Satan, you must have a clear purpose; otherwise you are a rebel without a cause.
Why do I say all these things? I am stressing your responsibility. That is important. We are trying to relate to one another heart to heart. We have to be together through thick and thin. I certainly hope that in the future we can have more joyous times with Father. No matter what, we must cut through all the physical things and have dominion over them and understand the heart of Father.
In order to have this experience, we have a lot of work ahead of us. We have to be responsible. Let us do our best and perform our utmost, for the sake of Father, our Father. I will do my best for my Father, you must do the same for my Father, because he is your Father, too. Don't you like to be called brothers and sisters?
I hope you caught my heart today. Once you take it, you are bearing a responsibility. Please bring joy to our lives. I try to bring joy to your lives. The reason Father encourages you to experience hardship is because that is the only way you can understand the suffering of God. Without experiencing it, it's not yours completely. You must first understand the suffering heart of Heavenly Father to become worthy to receive His blessings. Please have a nice week and let's go bring victory!
I would like to talk about responsibility from the perspective of the Principle. We all understand that man's responsibility was to obey the commandment of God. Then what was God's purpose in giving the commandment to man? According to the Principle, the first reason is because there was the possibility of man falling. Secondly, in giving the commandment, God is ultimately saying to mankind, "In order for you to embody me, to represent me, to become the recipient of my love, to become the ideal object, you must fulfill the responsibility that I have given you." God expected man to obediently follow His direction. If man followed the direction that God set forth through the period of the indirect dominion, then ultimately he would become like Heavenly Father and have give and take with His love.
Within the indirect dominion, the most significant aspect is that each individual must fulfill his responsibility to choose to act as God desires in order to ultimately become the embodiment of God. God wants to have give and take with someone who has everything that He possesses within Himself, including creativity. That someone must have the capacity to realize what God represents, and be able to choose to manifest those qualities. The fall is possible, therefore, because man is free to make the wrong choice.
Once you become married to someone, your life and everything that you possess will be shared by that person, right? If I do not know all about my wife, all the intimate aspects, it is not possible for me to truly love her and for her to truly feel honest in front of me. So in order for God to realize His love, He must have an object who can truly understand His expectations, His will and purpose. That is why the object must become like God.
In I Cor. 11:7 it says man must bring glory to Heavenly Father and woman must bring glory to man. That is important. Man brings glory to God by becoming one with Him, which means becoming His object. Man fulfills his responsibility through the indirect dominion and ultimately is blessed by God with a wife; through their marriage relationship they will come to understand each other. To man, woman is essential because through woman in the object position, man will learn the way of becoming the ideal object to God. At the same time man is essential for woman because only through man in the subject position will woman understand and possess the quality of becoming the subject to their children, responsible to raise, nurture and guide them. These are essential qualities in becoming an ideal man and woman.
Then what is direct dominion? When man fulfills his responsibility within the indirect dominion, he becomes the ideal object to God; then the ideal consummation of marriage will take place and the beginning of the ideal family and ideal civilization will occur.
But this was never realized because we did not know clearly the responsibility, the position or the role that man and woman had to fulfill in the purpose of creation.
Jesus emphasized many times how important it was for man to understand the will of Heavenly Father. One example is in Matt. 7:21: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven." You first must understand the will of Heavenly Father in order to become citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. The most significant thing to realize is why there has to be a Messiah, the absolute subject in man's world.
Everything has to do with responsibility. According to the Principle, all of you are separate individuals and each must choose to participate in the process of ideal love in order to attain God's love. Only through an ideal object can God attain ideal love. Only through an ideal subject can an ideal object attain ideal love. Can anybody tell me why the power of love is greater than the power of the Principle? So that once man matured in love with God, it would be an eternal and unbreakable relationship. God didn't want just robots. He wanted to have beings who would give a full one hundred percent emotional response to His love.
Having responsibility means to make choices. We are standing in the position to make the decision to become an ideal object to God, or we can fall and just become nothing.
If the power of Principle were greater than love, the power of Principle would bring the ideal result, and there would be no power that could sway or derail man from the path of God.
But the ultimate goal of man is to become the embodiment of God. Just as God chose to form the creation, prompted by His heart's desire to love, man must also stand in the position to make choices and ultimately be guided by true love, not only Principle.
Just forget the notion of ideal love for a second. Generally speaking, love can also mean the kind of individualistic love that we can indulge ourselves in. What is the effect of love? Joy. Love comes through a reciprocal give and take action with an object, realizing joy. That effect can be realized ideally, but also realized un-ideally. You can have a lot of joy indulging in your own self-interest and in material things. There is joy in ideal love but there can also be joy in un-ideal love. We must realize the way we can reach the ideal status of man is by knowing the will of God and fulfilling our responsibility to go according to God's will. Man has the responsibility to understand what's going on within the indirect dominion period and to resist the temptation to indulge in unideal love and joy. If the power of Principle was greater than the power of love, there wouldn't be this temptation to engage in un-ideal love or to deny the Principle. Even though you know the Principle, you can deviate from it; that's why love is described as being greater and more powerful than the Principle.
Our responsibility is to understand the will of God and to make the right choices in our lives according to God's will. Jesus describes the status of those who fail their responsibility in Matt. 11:11: "Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he." Because he failed his responsibility to bring the Israelites to Jesus, John stands below those who are least in the Kingdom of Heaven. You cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven without fulfilling your responsibility because the Kingdom of Heaven means becoming one with God. And how can you become one with God if you don't even know what God is all about? If you don't understand the will of God and become the embodiment of God, how do you expect to become the ideal object of God? There is no way.
You must also realize that the doubters, the skeptics, and all those people who deny God, possess the potential to accept the Principle and the will of God. Therefore all of mankind can become the children of God.
Jesus says in Matt. 10:32-36: "So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in Heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in Heaven. Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have come not to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and man's foes will be those of his own household." Those are very strong words.
Jesus wanted his followers to be willing to abandon their father, mother, brothers, sisters, children -- everything. You must absolutely make a separation between yourself and the satanic world. Why? Because of the fall there is a strong tendency in this world that is completely contrary to loving your enemy. When Jesus was talking about loving one's enemies, he was telling the disciples that there had to be absolute restoration in order for the ideal world to exist. You must stand in the position of denying the worldly standards and then adopt the new way of living, thinking and doing things. You must do away with the old way of life, the old concepts of love that existed within the family and realize the new concept. There has to be a new concept of ideal relationship between father and mother, parents and children, brothers and sisters, husband and wife. There has to be a new standard set and people who will follow the tradition set by the bearer of the standard. You must act according to the Principle, which gives you God's ideal perspective of how things should be and how we should try to live our lives.
Loving your enemy can be expressed in many ways. Jesus expressed his love very strongly when it came to sin. When I was going to school, I knew one boy who was very conceited. He was very arrogant and obnoxious, but nobody was willing to challenge his way of life. I was willing to and I did. That's love because by continuing that kind of life, the only thing he would become is a criminal. After a while he changed his way of thinking and even tried to be on my good side. He didn't want to stay as my enemy. You must understand what loving your enemy means.
How does fear come? I am afraid when I walk in a dark alley because I know that some kind of threat might exist that could ultimately take my life. When there is a possibility of losing something that is valuable to you, you fear. Adam and Eve felt that fear when they fell because through the fall they realized what the Principled relationship was and they knew they messed up. They felt fear because they realized that they had lost the chance of attaining ideal love.
Ultimately we can go beyond our fears. Once we become one with God there is no fear. There is only true freedom. We can transcend fear and even death if we can hold onto an ideal. There were a lot of saints and sages -- even criminals -- who could transcend the fear of death. You can become one with God's will, or you can become one with Satan's will, and with either you can reason and act according to it.
When you are little, you want to become the greatest. I used to imagine myself to be a superman. I saw a lot of movies where the bad guys were portrayed as heroes. They were very attractive because the law enforcement officers made clumsy, obvious mistakes. The bad guys always knew what was going to happen three or four steps ahead of the law enforcement people. In some movies, when the bad guy died, he died with grace. It was very dramatic, but very intense and there was no weakness in it. I said to myself, "Hey, if that guy can die like that, then I've got to die better."
I'm sure, you were pretty inspired, by the lives of saints and sages -- the good people of the world. That's why you are here. You want to be better than the good people of history, or at least comparable. Once you become absolutely one with the will of Heavenly Father, you can. You can do whatever you want because it is in unison with God's will. The fulfillment of God's will comes through realizing our responsibility: man becoming object to God, woman becoming object to man, and children becoming object to their parents, following the ways of the elders. That is the ideal way.
The important thing is responsibility. Please keep that in mind and have a nice week.
In September, Father asked Hyo Jin Nim to lecture Divine Principle at Belvedere Sunday service.
Good morning. Can anybody share with me the purpose of creation? (Joy.) According to the Principle, the purpose of creation is to bring joy to Heavenly Father. How can God attain His joy? He must have man, right? The existence of man is absolutely necessary for Heavenly Father to have joy. Man's value lies in being able to provide joy to Heavenly Father. What is the process for attaining joy? It comes from man becoming one with God's ideal. Centering on God's ideal, man's responsibility is to unite with Heavenly Father, thus bringing Him joy.
At this point, it is very important to realize the meaning behind the existence of the angelic world. In Hebrews 1:4, it says that true man is made much superior to the angels. And in Cor. 6:3, "Do you not know that we are meant to judge the angels?" The Bible says that angels are subordinate to man. Man is meant to be subject. Why is this so important?
In Genesis, we see that Heavenly Father created the world with the assistance of the angelic world. So, prior to the existence of the physical world, angels existed. And if the angelic world were in the position to assist Heavenly Father, that means they were in a position in some way comparable to God; they could understand and bring fulfillment to His needs. Angels knew about the inner qualities of God. That means they must also have possessed those qualities. Then why is God saying that man is in the position of subject to the angels? The reason is that man is to become the physical embodiment and manifestation of the spiritual God.
It says clearly in Rev. 2:9 that angels are servants to man. When John was guided by the angel to see the vision of the Kingdom of Heaven, he was very moved by it, and afterwards he knelt down in front of the angel. The angel turned to John and told him not to bow to him because he was his servant.
Angels are clearly in the position of objects/servants to man. Why is this important? Because there has to be a clear subject and object relationship in order for God's ideal to be manifested on earth. An absolute subject and object relationship is necessary in order for God's ideal to be manifested. The meaning of the foundation of substance is exactly that: subject and object relationship. The whole history of mankind is about restoring this relationship.
Subject/object relationship is the reason that God created the angelic realm. How can one attain happiness? One must have an object, right? Without a reciprocal base, there is no substantiation of love. With the help of the angelic world, God created the world. They are servants, objects to Heavenly Father. Within Himself there is original sung-sang and hyung-sang and through this reciprocation comes the manifestation of the ideal. Therefore, the fulfillment of creation lies in man having dominion over all created beings. Man's perfection lies in becoming subject to the angels, because if man is to become the embodiment of God, man must possess God's quality of dominion.
You must also understand that the angelic realm is a spiritual stage. Heavenly Father is a spiritual being, and the reason for the creation of the physical world is to bring the ideal into manifestation. God's desire to substantiate joy can only be attained through the manifestation of this particular creation process. Joy was God's sole desire in creating. He did not want any of all the other possibilities, he wanted the one particular quality of true love to be manifested. The angelic realm represents the spiritual form of Heavenly Father, and based upon the reciprocal give and take in this spiritual stage, came the physical world.
Could Heavenly Father think about the possibility of the fall itself? Of course he could think about it, but was that the ideal of God, the purpose? NO! He knew what would happen if Adam and Eve took the fruit of good and evil, but that is not what He intended. So if the objects are like Heavenly Father, possessing His qualities, are they in the position to make that decision? God knew the consequences of the fall, and if objects are like God, then does the responsibility lie in the hands of the objects? (Yes.)
So how does the fulfillment of creation come? Centering on God and the angelic realm the physical creation came, but the perfection of this world comes through man gaining dominion over the creation, including the angelic world. Because man is the physical manifestation of God, if God has dominion over the angelic world, Adam and Eve must also have that dominion over the angelic world.
God has to be present within the physical stage, and in order for that to happen the person who represents God must possess godlike qualities. Having godlike qualities means having dominion over the angels. The significance behind the creation of the angels is that there must be a reciprocal base in order to manifest joy and love. God could have existed alone, but he wanted to manifest the ideal of joy and love. Within God, there are infinite and omnipotent qualities, but it is from the qualities of sung-sang and hyung-sang that He derives joy and love. That is the significance behind these dual characteristics. If want to manifest love, you must have an object.
Do you understand what it means that God gave everything for the sake of creation? Do you really feel it in your bones? Think about something that involves risk, like gambling. You can win a lot of money, but you can also lose everything. Or picture yourself losing your children, who bring you so much joy and comfort. Through your children you feel joy and happiness. You love holding your children in your arms because they return love and warmth to you. By imagining yourself losing your children, you are putting yourself in the position of Heavenly Father. When God told Adam and Eve, "Do not take the fruit of good and evil," that statement left a question mark, because if they took the fruit of good and evil, they would surely die. But at the same time, if they didn't, they would have eternal life.
To put Himself in that uncertain position was very, very difficult. If something terrible happened, He would experience incredible torment. So in order for you to understand Heavenly Father, you must put yourself in the same kind of situation. What do you hold dear? Put yourself in a situation where there is a possibility of losing the things that you hold dear. If you treasure comfort, put yourself in a position where you can lose that comfort. If you treasure money, put yourself in a position where you could lose that money. God was willing to put himself in that position of uncertainty for the sake of love. Do you understand now what it means that God sacrificed to create the creation? He knew that if things didn't turn out according to His plan, he would be walking the course of suffering and hardship. But He was willing to take that chance for the sake of love. Every time when you feel something, when you value something, put yourself in the position of Heavenly Father. It is very important for you to understand God's heart, and the way to do that is to put yourself in that position of losing the things that you value.
God had to create this physical world because only through it can choices be made and manifested. Why? Because it is a limited world. Only through the physical world can you exclude things through making choices. You can eliminate undesirable elements from the physical world and make a world of only love.
If God is to attain the ideal of love, He must have the creation. He must own a world where there is time and space, a limited world. Only through this limited world God can make selections. Only through man can God manifest a place where there is only love. That is a whole purpose of creation -- to create a place of love. Many things are possible with this world, but you must realize what this physical world offers from the Principle point of view. Within this physical world, having an absolute standard is possible. There are so many people in this world, so I certainly can't have love on my own. And in this world, everyone is unique, but all of these unique people can share a common ideal. Within this physical world there is much diversity, but there are also possibilities for this diversity to converge and become one. That is the whole significance of the creation. We can make this world a place where there is only God's ideal. Please think about the concept of creation, the physical limited world, and the ideal world. Put those concepts together. Why does this limited world, or external world, exist? Why are there restraints of time and space? Because the ideal world is where only joy exists.
The physical, limited world ultimately must become the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. If the Kingdom of Heaven exists in the spiritual realm where Heavenly Father exists, then this physical world must also reflect the image of God. The most important aspect which will bring about this realization of a physical world of ideal love is your responsibility. Even within this limited physical world, the possibilities seem endless. That is why responsibility is important. We are to make the right kind of choice, just as God has chosen the ideal to be of love.
Just as God chose the ideal world to be one of goodness, filled with joy and love, man also has the responsibility to make that choice, because man is to be the embodiment of God. This responsibility is crucial in realizing God's ideal! The object must make the choice to become object to the subject.
When God said, "Don't pick the fruit," Adam should have obeyed Him and become part of Him through his own reasoning. He should have been subservient. When he was rationalizing about the significance of God's commandment, he should have come up with a better conclusion than to go along with the temptation of Satan. But Adam and Eve chose to go along with the temptation of Satan, other than the commandment of God. That possibility existed because man was to be the embodiment of God. If God chose the ideal to be of love, so must man. By becoming obedient to God, Adam and Eve would have realized the reciprocal base where God could have give and take with them and they could become one with God.
What does it mean to bring glory to God? You becoming object to God brings glory to God. Through man's subordination, God attains His object, and through the attainment of the object comes the realization of love. Glory means uniting with God's ideal and desire. When I desire something, it is because I value that particular thing. Glory comes when things fulfill us. Fulfilling the ideals of God brings glory to Him. And how does man fulfill his glory? Through woman as his object. Without the object, there is no glory of man. In order to manifest the ideals of God, there has to be a qualitative state in which the ideal can be manifest-4!. This is the subject and object relationship. Through the subject and object relationship, you can manifest the ideals of God.
It is very important for us to realize the meaning of subject and object relationship, because only through this can God attain his ideal; there has to be this base. That is why the angelic world exists, because angels are to serve man and woman once they enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven means the perfection stage. And how do man and woman reach an ideally perfected stature? Through their unity. When there is oneness between man and woman, they are a love entity. Even a perfected being, in order to realize the ideal, must have an ideal object.
The angelic world is supposed to be in an object position. Man and woman, as one subject entity, are to stand in the position of subject to the angels. We are making a big circle. Centered upon God, the angelic world helped create the creation, but the reason for the creation is to manifest love. If, within this preparation stage, man perfects himself according to God's ideal, and reaches the spiritual world, he becomes one with God. Man and woman become one, and based on that, have dominion over the spirit world. So the reason that the whole creation process exists is because God wanted to manifest love! The creation process is a growth stage.
So what about responsibility and indemnity? Did you ever think about Heavenly Father as an authoritarian figure, or hungry for power? He demands from man a great deal of sacrifice. Even blood is shed in the name of God. If you look at it horizontally, you might think of God like that. The problem is that we see many examples of self-centeredness in man. Man, because of his hunger for power and greed, is often willing to sacrifice others to attain his own desires. Fallen men, not understanding God and not having an ideal example, look at these people who are power hungry for the realization of their own ideal, and they think Heavenly Father is like those people. So they despise God.
But you must realize that when God, or Father, asks you to do certain things, it is to put you in a position to fulfill your responsibility. This position can bring forth hardship-and challenge. Your lives become full of suffering. And many times, if you are not in the right frame of mind, you can certainly complain, right? But you must understand what lies behind it. When I need to scold any of my children, it hurts me a great deal. I get no pleasure out of punishing or scolding them. But at times I must do it. Why? Because if I do not separate what is right from wrong when they are learning, I know that they would have to face greater consequences when they get older. I must draw the line, otherwise they will accept what they did as right because they did it. If they are willing to do it once, they will do it again. So because of that, I must scold them, although it pains me greatly.
The reason for indemnity is because the ideal world is a place of absolute joy. There cannot be any possibility of evil, not even one iota. It has to be pure. The reason for indemnity is so that the pure and ideal world will be secured and protected. When man becomes irresponsible, God asks him to offer a sacrifice. Being responsible means sacrificing. Because you haven't made sacrifices, you are then told by God to make a sacrifice. But actually making the sacrifice is in your own hands. God cannot do that for you. God can only tell you what is right or wrong. It is out of the desire to manifest love that God demands these things of mankind.
You must realize that all subject and object relationships exist for the sake of love. So the existence of man, although you are subject, is for the sake of woman. You must live for the sake of woman. That is why man takes care of the welfare of the family. And woman, for the sake of love, wants to become part of man. In the same way, the angelic world, for the sake of love, must also become part of God. For the sake of love, God created the angels, and through their assistance, made the creation. When God created the physical world, it brought happiness to Him, right? When He first created man, he felt good. But bigger responsibilities lay ahead of the creation of man. Then, because of the conflict between angels and man over position, the fall occurred. The possibility of conflict existed, because man was in the position of the object, but at the same time, so was the angel. But since man was representing God, he was in the position to be subject to the angels, because without the presence of man, God cannot realize the ideal of love. Man and woman, which angels assisted in creating, were to become the embodiment of God.
So the conflict existed because angels were to serve man and woman, but actually both angels and man were in the position of objects to God. They both had responsibility to act according to God's will in order to attain the ideal. But the direction that God chose was for man to become subject over the angels, because he was to be the embodiment of God. The conflict existed between Satan and man because they are both products of God. You can certainly see that it could bring conflict, because they were both created by God. There could be conflict because they were not God. Man was to become like God, and also angels possessed the quality to understand Heavenly Father. But still, the angels would be in the position of object to man, who is just like him, in a sense, a creation of God.
I Cor. 15:21 says, "For as by a man came death, by a man has also come the resurrection of the dead." Man's responsibility is the key to realizing the ideals of Heavenly Father. The whole purpose of resurrection, indemnity, and salvation is because without man, God cannot attain His ideal. Man must grow within the physical world, and this physical world must become a world of God's ideal love. It is very important for us to understand the significance of responsibility and the importance of subject/object relationship.
You must realize one thing: nobody else can do your responsibility. Father has suffered his whole life for the possibility of you becoming responsible once more. The whole meaning of the 43 years of indemnity is so you can have another opportunity. Don't you ever think that Father did your responsibility. NO! Through his suffering, he has given you this chance to become one with God.
Today, I have emphasized the relationship between the angel and man. Because of this conflict between Satan and man came the fall. The essence of the fall is conflict between position. That was the bottom line. Satan did not want to become object to man; he wanted to be equal to man, and even worse, to subjugate man. So based upon that, he initiated the whole temptation process. The seed of the fall was the conflict between positions. The main key statement in this lecture is, that in order to avoid that same kind of conflict, you must go the opposite direction. You must realize the ideal behind the existence of subject and object positions. It is important for everyone to understand that relationship, because the ideals of God were shattered because man chose otherwise. Man didn't become subservient to the ideals and commandment of God. He deviated from the ideal position, and the whole process of the fall began. So, in order for us to separate from the conflict that exists within our own lives, we must clearly establish that ideal subject/object relationship.
Once you realize the importance of subject/object relationship, you are going to finally attain love. It is not just the subject attaining the fulfillment of love. It is also the object, because by the desire of the object to become one with the subject, the oneness comes about. And when you become one with the subject; the joy that comes through the oneness is appreciated by both subject and object. When I decide to become one with my central figure, who is Father, then there is love between me and him. The joy comes at the same time with my father, because Lam becoming one with him. So when I do the things that he asks me to do, I will bring him happiness. And that brings me happiness. The joy is shared together, not individually. I can certainly do the things that will bring pleasure to just me. There are many things that will bring me some sort of happiness through give and take with them, but if I want to attain the joy of love between my father and myself, I must become one with him. The object has to become part of the subject. I must make that conscious choice.
You must realize the reason that you may have so much conflict and separation with your central figure is because you don't like to be object. You always have some sort of excuse that your central figure is unworthy to be the subject. You degrade him down to the position of object. You are passing judgment all the time. You expect that person to unite with you and your opinion. But the reality is that this physical world is so messed up that it is very hard to appreciate the subjects. You all have central figures, every one of you. But there is always an instance when you feel that person doesn't know enough. The subject is someone from whom you can receive guidance, someone that you can become part of. But many times you feel that you are better than that person in fulfilling certain responsibilities. That is where the conflict begins. Certainly, when the angel looked at the adolescent Adam and Eve, he felt superior. But that was not important. What was important was the commandment from Heavenly Father. If Father represents the embodiment of God, and if we are all his children, what is important? To unite with the direction from Father. If you don't, it doesn't matter what rational or logical reason you might have, that is wrong. That is the beginning of the fall. The positions are given by Father, so you must respect the direction of Father. When you don't respect your central figure, you are not respecting Father.
The responsibility is there for both the subject and the object. When the subject is given that position, it is up to the responsibility of the subject to fill the subject's position. But at the same time, the responsibility of the object is to realize the ideal objective role.
The way you attain perfection is through self-inducement. You must give yourself absolutely for the sake of its realization. The responsibility lies between subject and object to make oneness and do the mission, because the greater goal is to fulfill the responsibility of that particular mission. The fulfilling of the mission is the priority, right? It was the responsibility of Adam, Eve, and the angel to fulfill their role in God's dispensation and, centering upon the will of God, become one. But Satan deviated and that is why the fall happened. Of course other possibilities exist, but you must cut away from all those things and realize the greater goal, which is for you to become the embodiment of God. In that particular case, it was for man to become the embodiment of God, and the angel to become the object to man and woman. They should have cast aside their differences and found a common ground. That ground was following the commandment of God. When Father gives you a direction, or a certain mission, and you have a central figure, the common ground is where both of you stand together and realize that mission.
This is very important, otherwise you cannot be responsible. You need a place where God can dwell among you. Realizing ideal subject/object relationships is the foundation of substance. Through the foundation of substance you can receive God's intervention. In order for you to reach your position as blessed families, you must get recognition from True Children, otherwise you have no ground to stand on before God. You think that I have to be recognized by you, but it goes both ways. You must truly try to accept us from your heart of love, based upon Principle.
Let's do our responsibility. I hope that my main theme of the importance of responsibility and the significance of subject/object relationship will somehow make a difference in your lives. From now on let's do what Father expects us to do. I think we can make a difference. The only way to bring good result to Father is to have a solid foundation, and that foundation starts from the relationship you have with your central figures. Through them, you are fulfilling your missions. From now on, maintain absolute unity in your work place and you can make a difference. Why do you think I am going to school? So that I can better represent you and Father to other people. That is the only reason. I want to bring happiness to Father. He deserves it because he lived his life for us Filial piety means you have give and take with your parents, and you must do this while they are living. Please, let's give that much, and let's stay together until the end. Thank you. Let's pray.
Today I would like to share something that I personally uphold and try to manifest in my life. That is: How can I bring joy and happiness to my parents? If there is anything that everyone in the world shares in common, it is the desire for a place where we can live together harmoniously. We want a place that provides joy and happiness for everyone. But this ideal is not easy to attain. Throughout history, various people have tried to fulfill the great ideal of bringing happiness and joy to mankind.
For mankind to experience happiness, there first has to be a common goal that everyone shares. Then everyone must invest all of themselves to reach this goal. So if mankind wants to attain happiness, we must share a common understanding of what happiness means and what the goal of happiness is. Then we have to pursue the goal which we set for ourselves.
It's very easy to gather in special interest groups and experience harmony for a limited time. But we are here for something beyond an individual special interest. The basis of the Principle is that you must sacrifice yourself. There must be self-inducement on your part to bring joy and happiness to mankind, and ultimately to Heavenly Father.
Because we have active imaginations and a physical body, it is very difficult for us not to be aware of our desires and needs. So when some ideal is telling you to transcend your individual desires for a greater goal, it demands a lot from us. However, frankly speaking, many people share the idea that there must be some kind of self-sacrifice in order to achieve harmony. This is easily said but very difficult in practice.
The same is true of my situation. I'd rather be chasing deer than attending school. But my responsibility is to finish my education. For me to fulfill this responsibility, I must eliminate all other thoughts. I must sacrifice and bury any other desires.
We all know this. If each of us is striving to attain a world of harmony, then something must be sacrificed. That sacrifice is our lives. Everyone in this room, without exception, has to sacrifice for the sake of this goal. To meet that sacrifice, we must understand the significant meaning of "offering".
When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them everything: "You can have dominion over creation. Everything that you see and touch and feel is yours. But you must refrain from taking the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil." The reason that God created is that He wanted a place where there was only love. He wanted to manifest love. God is omnipotent, therefore He could have created anything you could possibly imagine. But God wanted a place of love, so He gave Adam and Eve the commandment. There had to be a clear separation of good and evil. God knew about the possibility of evil and its consequences. But He had to take the risk if He was to realize a place where love exists.
The creation came from within God and its purpose was for love. The only way that God can ultimately have dominion over the creation is through man. This makes man different from all other creation. In a sense, man is like God in that man has the potential to have dominion over the creation and, ultimately, full dominion if he were to maintain this progress. Our mind is infinite, so if we have the desire to understand the creation, we will eventually realize and comprehend the essence of creation. We have that potential and the power to understand the very essence of God, since God made creation in His image.
Just as God brought the reason for the creation from within Himself, man must have the same foundation within himself if he is to become the recipient and embodiment of God. Therefore, there has to be a possibility where man will choose, through his own accord, the direction which God has chosen. God's ideal came from this infinite possibility. The same must be true for man.
Here on earth, we can do incredibly horrible things or we can choose to do what is right through our own responsibility. Man is standing in a vulnerable position:
If he walks one way, he will disobey God, whereas, if he walks another way, he's obeying God. If man comes up with a reason that ultimately coincides with God's direction, then man is actually manifesting the ideals of God by following the direction that God has offered him. God's direction is to attain the ideals of love, therefore if man becomes one with the ideals of God, he will go forward with God. But man's progress depends on his own effort and motivation.
We will not act without a reason. Many times you would act rebelliously: "I don't want to follow any reason"! That in itself is a reason. When his reason coincides with God, then man will become one with God and will embody God. Then God will have literal physical dominion through man. Man will be an extension of God just as we are an extension of our parents. No one can think that we came from nowhere, but all know that we are extensions of our parents.
So what is an offering and what does it have to do with this? When God told Abraham to make an offering, why did he fail? God told him to offer three animals but he forgot to cut the dove. The reason he failed was because Abraham did not offer himself completely to God. There were some of his own thoughts in his mind which prevented him from cutting the dove.
Hyo Jin Nim meets a new member.
When you are standing on the altar in front of God, you must realize that, "As a son, I am part of my Father. Whatever I do, good or bad, will affect my Father. There is no way I can separate from Him." There has to be that absolute union or love cannot be eternal. If you are an extension of parental love and decide to separate yourself from your parent, then that love ceases to exist.
The reason that eternal love can exist in the physical world is because we can multiply. As long as I have my children, and my children are a part of me, then they will have children who understand and accept this tradition. Then my love, my possession, my value, my ideal, will live on forever. If this world is to become an eternal place of love, separation cannot exist. There must be a complete intactness. The way we can attain this is through love.
Through the possibility of this potential, we are left with the responsibility to choose right or wrong. Many people may ask you, "Who are you to tell me what is right or wrong?" In a way, they have that right because they have been abused and manipulated by many self-serving people. It is very difficult to trust others these days with the existence of so much corruption, wrongdoing and selfishness.
Through the Divine Principle, we can understand the necessity of sacrifice and the value of offering. It means that you must commit yourself. You must realize who you are and that you are an extension of your Father, an extension of His love. You're not separate from it, but one with it. You must make a choice to live your life in a way that will ultimately bring unity.
In a sense, the life of Adam and Eve was an offering. If they could have sacrificed all of their personal thoughts and united with God's ideal, the ideals of God would have been manifested. In other words, they should have offered themselves completely, doing away with individual desire to become one with God's ideal.
So their very life was the greatest offering. They should have realized that they must become one with God's ideal through their own effort and that they must ultimately do away with anything that may distract them in order to purify the path toward unity with God.
Therefore make your offering an absolutely pure offering. Concentrate your focus toward God, your Father. The reason the creation was made was that God wanted to manifest His love. The way that love continues to exist is through reciprocal action. Joy comes through such reciprocal give and take.
You must have some kind of object to experience joy. For example, you can play a guitar and please your ears, but you cannot go into the depth of your feelings. In order to share the deep emotional content that lies within, you must have some object who can understand what you desire. That's the whole point of love.
A rallying call is sounded.
Why did God create for the sake of love and why is He willing to endure all of these hardships? If He has the power to create, why didn't He just erase them and start all over? You must realize that God is an absolute God and absolutely with to manifest love. In order to do that, He must have mankind and the creation, which were created for that specific purpose God is a perfect God so whatever He wills must be realized. If it isn't, the existence of Satan is validated.
You must understand that if God made the creation out of love, then everything within the creation must fulfill that criteria. If it goes unfulfilled, that would mean there is some impurity existing within the love of the Creator. Since God created out of love, then every element within the creation must bring forth it's ideal presence and ideal potential to become the ideal element that God intended. Of course, God hates the actions of Satan, but He is also willing to restore Satan. This is also the reason why you must be persistent in loving people.
If we want to bring the people of the world into the Principle, the best way is for us to practice it. We know what Principle and Father are teaching us. Father has sacrificed every step of the way. I realized this more when I started speaking every Sunday at Belvedere. No matter how short my speech may be it is really difficult. Personally, it is torment! So I'm very sensitive in that manner now and I know also Father is very sensitive. I understand how hard it is to go that path.
Every moment of Father's life, he has to speak and give guidance. He always has to think about the future, not just for one goal but everything that must be accomplished. Father gave me life. It doesn't matter how great you may be, your physical life was given by your parents, and your spiritual life was given by God. Thus, you have received something that is valuable and priceless.
I could be happy just hunting for the rest of my life -- I'm a very simple person. Ask anyone who knows me. But the reason I'm standing here, being applauded by you, is because I know the responsibility that my particular position holds. So it is my duty to live up to the position. The fall occurred because Satan looked toward Adam and Eve, desiring their position. He then deviated from his position and caused the fall.
All positions are important. In order for God's ideal to be realized, mankind must become God's ideal object so we must all fulfill our ideal positions.
That's why we're fighting Satan who wants to hold onto his false position. As long as Satan is opposed to God's ideal, His ideal will not be manifested. So we have the responsibility to be strong and bold. That's what Father tells us.
The only way you can realize God's ideal is to make your life a sacrifice. Your life is an offering. Believe in the commitment you have made to God so that offering can stand as pure as the moment you conceived it. That is your responsibility. The only reason you could fail is if your commitment becomes contaminated by some other ideas. Don't let that happen. This is a war and you have to fight Satan all the time.
This is a rather short talk. I guess I'm still in shock because Father said he wants to make me a professional Divine Principle lecturer. I don't know what to say except that I'm trying to find it in my heart to be grateful for whatever direction Father gives me. Your mind must subjugate your body. It's very easy to let your body subjugate your mind. You can see this all around such as through drug abuse, fashion, and so on. It's important for you to apply what you know through the Principle to your life. It's very difficult to think like that, but if you do, then everything is simple. Once you can do that, you just cut right through your opposition.
That's the only way we can march to our goal and attain it. This is the right attitude that we must all share. I sincerely hope everyone can renew their commitment during this short period of time. Please keep it with you, living it for the rest of your life. If you can do this, I can respect you with my arms raised. I am grateful to Heavenly Father and True Parents for giving me the Principle that is making your lives change. That is what means everything to me and it should to you also. Thank you for inviting me here and now I would like to sing some songs for you.
Brothers and sisters meditate at one of Camp Sunrise's lakes.
True Parents have declared that the spirit world is now ready to support us in reaching out to the second generation, primarily eighteen to twenty-year olds. Because True Parents have made a worldwide foundation with the first generation through their many projects, now is the time for the second generation to join our movement.
Our True Parents have already cast the net by allowing Hyo Jin Nim to take on the worldwide CARP leadership; by inaugurating campus ministry into the mainstream of the providence, by encouraging all UTS graduates to become campus ministers, and by inspiring CARP to reach out to 100 campuses. At the same time True Parents are seriously emphasizing the quality of manpower rather than the quantity, so the potential value of one university student is much greater than ever before.
Many of the youth of today are seeking a new trend of idealism as the college curriculum becomes more commercialized and as society becomes more entrenched in the mire of godless "isms." From a sociological viewpoint, young people in the 1950s were more conservative and materialistic. In the 1960s, they became liberal and idealistic. According to an opinion poll in the '60s, about 80% of the youth said that they were going to school to seek a more meaningful way of life. Now about 80% of the youth say that their college degree is simply a ticket to the job market.
In the 1960s, everyone wanted to find an ideal way of life. This was the best opportunity for CARP and Unification campus ministry to be established on the colleges and universities, but dispensational setbacks prevented the establishment of a foundation at that time. Consequently, the young people were unable to find true ideals and many took the alternate route of becoming hippies and living in communes.
In the 1970s, we saw the "me" generation on the campuses. In the 1980s, young people have once again become more conservative. Just as the worldwide providence has made a full circle with True Parents' completion of a 43- year indemnity course, the campus providence has also made a full circle. More than half the young people on campuses used to be liberal; but now there is a strong conservative trend on U.S. campuses. As the wave of global terrorism grows and the collapse of communist systems becomes more apparent, the power and influence of the liberal leftists has weakened on campus.
A trend will emerge in the 1990s with a new wave of idealism sweeping the campuses. Already signs of this trend are surfacing through the fresh spirit of volunteerism, righteousness and frontierism among young people. And this time, the foundation has been made through CARP and the campus ministry. We are established on campuses in all 50 states, ready to provide the students with an Abel view of life that will quench their thirst for a new vision and ethical activism.
The worldview of Godism and Headwing go beyond liberalism and conservatism.
Through this philosophy, we can embrace the liberal, idealistic young people as well as the more conservative ones, breaking down the barriers between them. Soon an atmosphere will permeate the universities in which young people will understand what true liberalism and true conservatism are. They will realize that we can change peoples' hearts, change society, and change the world for God's purpose.
On September 8-11, 1989, East Coast CARP held an historic workshop at the beautiful site of Camp Sunrise in New York. The theme of the workshop was: "Victory for Campus Tribal Messiah- ship." Seventy-four of the 350 participants were new members who had joined within the previous six months. Although the number of new members to join in those six months was an unprecedented event in the history of U.S. CARP, we must still repent before God and True Parents that the number is not much greater. Yet hundreds of young university students were exposed to the philosophy of Unificationism.
In Northern California, one reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle attended our two-day seminar as a "potential recruitee," incognito. After the horror stories she had heard, she admitted to expecting something more sinister. When the workshop finished, she revealed her identity as Shann Nix, San- Francisco Chronicle staff writer, and shortly afterwards, she wrote a very objective article.
She believes and wrote that the appeal of Rev. Moon to today's youth is that he "offers his disciples the most intoxicating of sensations -- unconditional, non-sexual love. He gives them the family they always wanted, the moral structure they need, the sense of belonging they never had. It gives them "privileged" information about the big questions in life: the existence of God, the meaning of sin, the purpose of life."
During the workshop, she asked another guest, Richard, what he thought about everything. He replied: "It's the most logical, coherent religious system I've ever heard. It just makes so much sense." Neither Ms. Nix nor Richard have joined, but Richard, like so many others, continues to come to the workshop in order to receive more advanced lectures on Divine Principle.
It has been CARP's past experience that once a guest left the workshop, it was rare to ever see them again. But recently, guests often return to our workshops in order to continue their studies of Divine Principle. Even though a great percentage of the guests failed to join at this particular time, undoubtedly many of them had their ideas and lives reshaped to some extent, and can certainly influence their friends and families.
However, the best and brightest of our workshop guests responded to God's call and humanity's cry. They are young, beautiful, intelligent, enthusiastic, hopeful, eager and energetic. Although most of them are students, witnessing was not restricted to the college campuses. They were also met on the streets, on the beach, in the library, in the neighborhood, in Bible study groups, in coffee shops: virtually everywhere.
Brothers and sisters, these young people are not only accessible to CARP, they are accessible to anyone who reaches out to genuinely love them and guide them. As America's moral-free formula leads to greater confusion, decadence and corruption, young people everywhere are struggling to find a more meaningful way of life.
The grand highlight of the workshop was when our beloved Hyo Jin Hyung Nim came to speak to us and to welcome our new brothers and sisters. Although Hyo Jin Nim's speech was only an hour long, it was a profoundly insightful message about the significance of offering and our attitude towards the Principle. As he spoke, there was an undercurrent of expressions and feelings unmasking the weight of his immense responsibility and the indomitable force of filial love which propels him forward to fulfill his position and mission as True Parents' eldest son.
Hyo Jin Nim performs three songs for the workshop.
After his speech, Hyo Jin Nim passionately sang three songs including one from his new album that was recently released. As the new members were being introduced to Hyo Jin Nim, he asked that each person shake his hand. Hyo Jin Nim's face revealed such love and pride as he personally welcomed each new child with the look of tender concern in his eyes. The new members were glowing with gladness as they bowed in deep appreciation for the special acknowledgement from Hyo Jin Moon.
There was electrifying excitement in the atmosphere, but the significance of the moment was captured by the young and faithful hearts of the new members. After shaking hands with Hyo Jin Nim, one member exclaimed: "Now I'm a part of history!" Finally, Hyo Jin Nim took one picture with all of us, as well as a separate picture of himself with the new members.
Because our result wasn't a 1-1-1 victory, we were both humbled and filled with tremendous joy to offer these children to God and True Family. This joy was further amplified when we could see how grateful and genuinely touched True Family was by the expansion of our global family. Hyo Jin Nim explained that "man is the extension of God just like you are an extension of your parents." His actions toward the new CARP "extensions" of True Parents made this concept a concrete reality.
As Hyo Jin Nim walked to the car, he radiated love as he shook hands with dozens of brothers and sisters. As he was driving away, members raced along the side of his car just to feel his touch.
As remarkable as this second day of the workshop was with Hyo Jin Nim, the remainder of the workshop was not anti-climactic. The tears, joy, celebration and enlightening education continued as we received dynamic addresses from Dr. Seuk, Mrs. Eu, Rev. Park, Mr. Kamiyama, President Baughman and Dr. Durst. The lineup of the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears combined is dismal compared to this lineup of heavenly stars. Their penetrating guidance managed to inspire most of us old CARP veterans into a new cycle of reflection, repentance and recommitment.
The colorful testimonies of the young members also held our attention. We were surprised by their maturity, perception and understanding. It was evident to us that the quality of these brothers and sisters was the real fruit of our True Parents' foundation of indemnity in America. One new brother, for example, is a descendant of William Bradford, who arrived on the Mayflower and was the first governor of the Pilgrim settlers.
It was equally moving to hear the bittersweet testimonies of their spiritual parents. Their spiritual children shed tears listening to the stories of how much pain and joy was endured by their spiritual parents to restore each one of them. It's a story which never grows old because it mirrors the tears, sweat and blood which we all must place on the altar each day.
A workshop just wouldn't be complete without Sunday Night Live! We enjoyed an evening filled with sizzling entertainment which left no one sitting in their seats. This creative magic lasted for several hours as members would exuberantly break out into song and dance, intoxicated with the joy and love of God.
True Father has said that he cannot influence the world without restoring the second generation. Through Divine Principle, we know that when the providential focus shifts to the second generation, it is the pinnacle of True Parents' mission and culmination of God's providence of restoration. On Sept. 1, 1989, our True Parents declared the completion of the indemnity age vertically and horizontally, and declared this to be the Age of Heavenly Parentism.
True Father explained that the era of persecution is over and the age of welcoming is here. It is a time to celebrate because a new generation is joining in this era when the world will welcome our True Parents, allowing True Parents' true love, true life and true blood lineage to prevail. Through the authority given to us as tribal messiahs, True Parents are declaring that this is the time for parents to be liberated and the children to take over. This new era is when the second generation will come under True Parents by each one of us claiming our messiahship and casting our nets!
The opening session was filled to capacity.
We must realize that there is an ideal for every creation. The ideal exists because God exists. In order for any relationship to take place we need a subject and an object. The subject and object then bring about the realization of the ideal through a reciprocal relationship.
God wanted to manifest a specific place where people can feel joy. This is realized through reciprocal action between subject and object, which will bring about the ideal of creation. It is true that man can realize some of his own ideals. However, in order for man to attain the ideal of perfection where mankind can live harmoniously together, he has to apply the ideals of the creator, God.
It is interesting to note that the secular media sees one of the most significant aspects of love as sex. Sex brings pleasure, but they must realize that marriage is not just sharing physically, but also sharing each other's lives. Joy through sharing with one another physically certainly leads to other living experiences. Even in the physical experience, one spouse has to bring happiness to the other spouse. When they make love, they should give to the other person. When you do that then the sexual experience can enrich itself because it becomes the model by which we can bring joy to all aspects of our life.
Within the couple there has to be a subject/object relationship. One spouse has to center on the other spouse. Often husband and wife argue about who is subject. In realistic terms we can say that it is not important who leads the family, just as long as the whole family is benefited. Ideally, within the unit of the family there has to be a re-enactment of the subject/object relationship between God and man.
The responsibility of the subject is to care for the object. The responsibility of the object is to become part of the subject. The subject becomes the provider and guider for the object. To achieve the ideal, man must unite and follow God. The ideal family relationship, then, is a reflection of this ideal relationship with God as the subject, and man as the object.
The subject and object relationship brings order. Order preserves and secures the whole. We are individual and self-conscious beings. Certainly we can live our lives centering on ourselves. And it is very easy to become subject where you are living in the "me generation." The tendency is to do anything you want.
However at the same time we can center on other people. Which becomes the priority? For ourselves, which is subject? The answer to this question is simple -- living for the sake of the whole. I am self-conscious, and I realize what I need; yet I can realize the greater purpose of my existence by thinking about the whole purpose. Since living for the sake of others is good, and living for yourself is evil, then living for the purpose of the whole must be subject.
Man has a role that he must fulfill. There are stages to go through -- formation, growth, and perfection. Nothing just instantly perfects itself. Your family as a whole and also you as an individual have to grow into an ideal being. Then that process is where there has to be absolute investment. You have to give yourself absolutely to reach that perfection.
Working hard for a goal is a difficult thing, because you have to separate from other things that you desire. Whatever else comes into your mind, you have to put it aside. If there is an ideal, but your individual desires are something other than God's ideal, then there is conflict: God's idea as opposed to our own idea.
Because God gave of Himself absolutely when he created the creation, if you want to realize ideal values, you have to give absolutely.
Hyo Jin Nim encourages the participants at the Games.
The Sixth CARP Convention of World Students was held in London, England from Au- gust 20th to August 23rd, 1989. CARP members from over 70 nations participated in four exciting days of student celebration and cultural exchange, centering on our beloved World-CARP President, Hyo Jin Nim.
On the evening of Sunday, August 20th, over a thousand delegates filed into London's Royalty Theatre for the Opening Ceremony, their hearts full of joyful anticipation. An unnecessary fire check conducted by the theater management just 20 minutes before the program was a final reminder of the persecution and opposition faced all along the way.
Serious preparatory work for the Convention began in February, and from April 20th the entire British Unification movement was mobilized to support the Convention, laying the spiritual foundation for success with a 120-day prayer condition of prayer and chain fasting, and reaching out to everyone we knew.
The CARP Convention was described by the influential London daily newspaper the Daily Telegraph as "the most ambitious exercise ever mounted by the followers of the Rev. Moon." We made full use of the opportunity to contact important public figures. Our publicity campaign included a mail-out to 22,000 top people -- professors, ministers, government officials, senior civil servants, police and army officers included -- informing them of our Convention theme, "A New Vision of Marriage for Students." We were able to obtain donations totaling many thousands of pounds from city businesses, and were received by diplomats from over 40 embassies.
Of course, the main focus of CARP's activity was to invite students to study the Unification vision and attend the Convention. We began in March, when four British CARP members were joined by the European Mobile Team for a nationwide campaign. 120,000 leaflets were handed out to students in 50 universities and polytechnical institutes.
The initial response was surprisingly good: more than 2,500 inquiries were received. One unexpected result was that two students took part in this year's Religious Youth Service Project in Italy, returning with glowing testimonies about their experiences.
Forty more enthusiastic European CARP members came to support the Convention preparation 40 days before its start, selling over 1,000 tickets for the Main Convention. Street rallies and Won-hwa-do demonstrations simultaneously bemused and inspired passersby in the weeks preceding the Convention.
The leafleting campaign in the universities prompted the National Union of Students and an anti-cult organization (FAIR) to start an offensive against CARP and the Unification Church. Local newspapers across the nation produced negative reports about CARP and after a national daily printed details of three of our locations, one cancelled and a second attempted to cancel, but were finally forced to accept us.
At the Opening Ceremony, in a very moving two-hour address, Hyo Jin Nim shared his heart intimately with all the World CARP members, many of whom were seeing him for the first time. He explained how to become a true child of True Parents by following his own course and not being afraid to confront our own internal difficulties.
A slide show introducing the City of London and reviewing the previous five CARP Conventions was shown, which was followed by a short entertainment program including contributions from each of the main World-CARP areas.
The following day provided a chance for academic exchange. The symposium drew 18 professors to debate the notion, "A Mother's Place is with her Children," and to present papers on marriage and life in the 21st Century. Malta took first place in the
International Essay contest with essay-writers from Japan and Kenya also receiving prizes. The four panel sessions in the afternoon covered many areas of vital concern to students as we approach the 21st Century and ranged from "The Family in Crisis" to the problems and prospects for "The Multicultural Society."
Monday evening saw a complete change of pace with a dinner and dance on the battleship HMS Belfast. This 15,000 ton cruiser spearheaded the British effort in the Korean War, sailing 80,000 miles and firing over 8,000 shells with such accuracy that it earned the nickname, 'that straight shooting ship.' World CARP members had time to reflect about those events of almost 40 years ago as they toured the ship and danced on the decks which were once the scene of desperate battles.
The Main Convention and Festival took place in Wembley -- London's largest conference center, on August 22nd. International delegates from over 70 nations were joined by representatives from 17 embassies, professors, ministers from 15 different churches and the Superior Evangelist P. H. Ajose of the 10 million-strong Celestial Church of Christ; in all 2,500 guests.
In the main congratulatory address, Professor Richard Rubenstein railed against the double standards of the press in Britain who sought to damage the Convention, and advanced the idea of "true sexual liberation" -- a fulfilling relationship of lifelong commitment to one partner. Hyo Jin Nim delivered an impressive and well-prepared speech. He encouraged all the audience to reach for absolute values in marriage, and to reflect the original relationship between God and man within every family.
The festival which followed had no fewer than four rock-bands and was very fresh and exciting. The audience were also treated to a taste of Highland dancing from Scotland and several uniquely traditional Thai dances, as well as Won-hwa-do martial arts performances which left the audience spellbound. The Convention theme song, "Winning Together," written by the British CARP band Original Mind, was performed by the entire cast in a moving finale.
The final day came and with it the chance for World-CARP to invest prodigious energies in the Hanmadang Games, held at the National Sports Center at Crystal Palace, Britain's leading athletics stadium. Seven teams took part in the opening ceremony: Korea, Japan, USA, Europe, Africa/ Asia/Americas, Thailand and Great Britain.
After Hyo Jin Nim had officially opened the Games, the teams engaged in a full program of competitive sports including track and field events, soccer, basketball, volleyball and table tennis. In a day of dramatic results, it was the Thailand team that emerged victorious in the team placings, with the USA as runner-up and Europe third.
Another drama occurred when Japanese 10,000 meter runner Mikio Yoshida collapsed during the race and was rushed to the hospital with suspected concussion and brain hemorrhage. Hyo Jin Nim was so concerned that he visited the hospital twice; and surely it was this prayerful concern that allowed the brother to recover consciousness after only six hours with no lasting effects.
That same evening the tired but exhilarated athletes and spectators made their way across London to the Closing Ceremony. Our finale was held in the most unusual setting: the Dinosaur Hall at the National History Museum. The beautiful hall is normally dominated by a 60 foot skeleton of a Diplodocus, which roamed the earth over 165 million years ago, but this time it was Hyo Jin Nim who filled the hall with God's presence. In a powerful speech he told us of his efforts to reach the standard of filial piety expected by Father in naming him "Hyo Jin" (advance of filial piety) and challenged us to do the same. "The way I see it," he said, "is that if Father can do it, I can do it. And if I can do it, so can you!"
Hyo Jin Nim then announced to tumultuous applause that the 7th CARP Convention would be held in Paris. As a final treat, he performed some of his best songs with such power that even the dinosaurs were seen to dance!
On this high note, a beautiful gathering of youthful spirits joined together under the love of True Parents had finally drawn to a close. But as Hyo Jin Nim intimated to British-CARP President Mike Balcomb, the CARP Convention represented a new dawn for Britain. We will be very busy from now on as we substantially restore the universities with God's truth and love.
See you in Paris!
A rousing entertainment finale.
Brothers and sisters of World CARP, welcome to London. It is an honor for us to host the CARP Convention of World Students a second time here in Europe. I would like to begin by giving a summary of how the CARP Convention has progressed.
On June 18, 1984, the Reverend Moon announced his intention to hold, from that year on, an annual CARP Convention of World Students. At the same time, he declared that day to be World CARP Day.
That was also the day on which the Supreme Court of the United States made the decision that meant he would have to go to Danbury. There he urged all CARP members to wipe away his indignation by becoming second Reverend Moons themselves.
According to his direction, the First Convention was held in Seoul, Korea in November 1984. The topic was, "Students' View of Values -- Towards a Peaceful World."
Through this convention a World CARP organization, of which Hyo Jin Moon became president, was established.
The second CARP Convention of World Students was held in Tokyo, Japan in July, 1985 in the Kokugikan Auditorium. The topic was, "Students' View of Values -- Towards the 21st Century." Hyo Jin Nim participated in and hosted the Convention for the first time. On the foundation of the victory of this Convention, Father declared the Day of Total Victory.
The Third Convention was held in New York in October 1986 in the Jacob Javits Convention Center, the topic being: "New Vision: Creating a New Student Movement." In this Convention, for the first time, a mass protest rally was organized against the misuse of drugs.
Berlin was the location chosen for the Fourth CARP Convention of World Students. The venue was the famous International Congress Center and the theme: "Creating a New Student Movement for a Unified World."
The Convention there was particularly memorable because of the climate of almost total hostility from the city of Berlin. As a result of the controversy, 430 newspaper articles were printed and all the Convention venues were cancelled. However, through some dramatic court decisions four days before the Convention, it was able to go ahead as planned.
The climax of the Convention was a march to the wall, boldly led by Hyo Jin Nim himself, in the face of violent opposition. The participants went home with the slogan resounding in their ears: "Die Mauer muss weg!" (The Wall must go!)
Last year, the Convention had the motto: "World Students and Original Ethics." It was held in August in the Thailand Cultural Center, Bangkok. The most notable aspect of this Convention was the welcome which it was given by the host city, in contrast with the previous year. The Ramkhamheng University not only supported but co-hosted the Convention with CARP.
In this Sixth CARP Convention of World Students here in London, we take as our theme "A New Vision of Marriage for Students: Towards the 21st Century."
It is our determination through this Convention to strengthen the foundation of World CARP centered on Hyo Jin Nim and to inherit from him Father's victorious foundation. Finally, we want to make this a historical turning point in the development of God's Providence and pledge to take responsibility to fulfill this in our own mission countries.
National representatives parade in front of the stands.
This year in London, England, World CARP held its 6th CARP Convention of World Students, following conventions previously held in Korea, Japan, USA, Germany and Thailand. At the Closing Ceremony in London, Hyo Jin Nim, the World CARP President, announced the location of the 7th Convention-1990: Paris, France! Each year, in each country, CARP members from all over the world gather together to share the work and the victory. As an American participant in this year's convention I would like to share a few points of reflection on my experience there.
From different parts of America, 51 participants flew into London. I realized while we were in flight that it is one thing to attend a convention as a guest as we were doing and an entirely different experience to be the host country. Memories flooded back from our year of preparation for the USA CARP Convention in New York in 1986 and my heart went out to all of the brothers and sisters in Europe who have worked so hard this year. Each person must have many stories of seemingly impossible goals to attain, and challenges and barriers to go over, which finally come down to a few short days that took so long to prepare for: the Convention. Our respect and our gratitude is beyond words.
Travelling to another country gives you the opportunity to see your own situation from a very different perspective. One of the deepest impressions that was made on me was the fact that here in America, especially New York, we have so many opportunities to be with True Parents and the True Children that we tend to forget that for other members around the world it is a very rare occasion to be with the True Family. When I heard that Father had not been in England since 1978, 11 years ago, it was hard for me to believe. I met brothers and sisters who had seen True Parents just once -- at their matching and Blessing. Others had never seen True Family even though they had been in the movement for many years. The more stories I heard, the more I realized how accustomed we are to the blessing of having True Family here in the United States. The depth of longing and the electric feeling of excitement that I experienced as people there waited for Hyo Jin Nim to arrive, I will never forget.
Our first day, with lunch boxes in hand, we loaded into many red double-decker buses with official tour guides showing us the sights of London. As Americans our roots are definitely connected to England and even though we share basically the same language (a fact disputed by some English people) the cultural contrasts were interesting and thought provoking. The United States being such a young country in the global community make it fascinating for us to see castles that had origins in the 8th or 11th Centuries. This culture where so much centers on or at least is entertained by "The Royalty," caused me to think a lot about the True Family's position in world history. Whenever we saw a castle, great building, church or monument, I found myself wondering what Father would do with it. Seeing the vastness of Windsor Castle, I thought of how small East Garden is in comparison. Someday, all of the most beautiful places must be dedicated to the highest purpose and there will be only one true royal family.
The Convention schedule is packed with many events, beginning with the Opening Ceremony, which is such a beautiful internal gathering in the final stages before the Main Convention day. Hyo Jin Nim was greeted so enthusiastically and as the name of each country represented was announced, delegates stood to greet Hyo Jin Nim and each other.
From this very first night and throughout the course of the Convention week, Hyo Jin Nim spoke with the power of love and righteousness. If our hearts are open he can give us so much, while what we do with it is our absolute responsibility. In one speech he said: "Nothing just instantly perfects itself. Nothing pops into perfection. Your family as a whole and also you as an individual have to grow into an ideal being. You have to give yourself absolutely to reach that perfection."
The heart of the Convention week is the Main Convention and Festival, the place where Hyo Jin Nim can address the world students beyond our own members. Thousands of tickets are sold and thousands of promises made but it all comes down to this time -- will the hall be filled and will the students receive the message? So many people came and the response was very enthusiastic.
It was very powerful to hear Hyo Jin Nim speak. It went far beyond "a speech" -- he was deeply teaching the Divine Principle. He said: "We must realize that there is an ideal for every creation. The ideal exists because there is God." He spoke about the ideal subject and object relationship and addressed head-on the problems in relationships today between men and women then outlined the Principle solution. Being there and listening to him reminded me of Father's early rallies here in America and how the words of truth cut into the thick clouds of darkness; that same kind of historical clarity surrounds Hyo Jin Nim's words.
From fantastic entertainment to the colorful and challenging Hanmadang Games, from dancing and singing on an old battleship to the intellectually stimulating Symposium, every participant gave and gained a lot.
During the course of such an intense schedule there are many things that happen behind the scenes and on the inside amongst each other -- some deeply meaningful and serious times such as Hyo Jin Nim's care for the hospitalized Hanmadang runner from Japan, together with very light moments such as the Closing Ceremony in the Natural History Museum.
I wondered what on earth does Hyo Jin Nim think giving his final speech in a massive room facing the back of a huge brontosaurus? He opened by saying that this was a "very unique" occasion and that he would "never forget" this experience of having "a dinosaur in his audience!" It was the first time. We heard later that a gigantic cake was baked and decorated for the Closing Ceremony, but one small detail was overlooked -- there was no way that it could fit through the kitchen doorway to be taken to the Museum! So, frantically in the final moments, it had to be cut and re-assembled at the Hall! The C invention closed with Hyo Jin Nim's final speech and powerful music; then the Convention flag passed on to the French CARP President.
So many things happen behind the scenes of such a major event. Many prayers, tears, conditions, sleepless nights and many names unspoken for public recognition and gratitude. But God knows and True Family receives the heart of all the offerings made. On behalf of all American CARP brothers and sisters, I would like to offer deepest gratitude to Hyo Jin Nim and to say "Congratulations!" for a great victory and thank you for the wonderful memories from London in 1989.
Inspired CARP students prepare for the Games.
Before the CARP Convention began, I found that God was pushing me to learn a deeper level of Cain/Abel relationship by getting me to take more responsibility for my mission. The day I made a commitment to do that, everything began to change, and within a week I found myself preparing for the CARP Convention.
Mrs. Abe, our national leader's wife, asked my wife and some other sisters to serve the VIP's and also Hyo Jin Nim. She explained however that it was very important that they could stand on a foundation to meet True Parents at the same level as their husbands.
This meant that I had to inherit everything from my central figure, not as an individual, but as a couple together with my wife. By doing that we can make a foundation to receive the messiah because essentially it is the same thing as making a "foundation to receive my central figure."
I was responsible for the Opening Ceremony, which after a few exciting incidents, went ahead more or less as scheduled. On the following day, just when I thought that all my responsibilities were over, I was asked to help Hyo Jin Nim with his speech.
In his hotel room, Hyo Jin Nim sat opposite me and began speaking, at firs' quite softly, then gradually with more and more seriousness about the Principle as applied to marriage and the family. As he spoke I quickly wrote down as much as possible in note form. I was deeply moved by the way he expressed his tremendous love and loyalty for True Parents, and the depth with which he felt his responsibility to inherit everything from the foundation they had built up so painstakingly over the last forty years. After I had taken notes for two and a half hours, Hyo Jin Nim spoke more personally to me, and I was able to ask him a number of questions about his past.
He explained how he had been persecuted by both his peers and his teachers for being Oriental. He told me of one incident when, after clearing his throat in class, he was beaten so badly across the face by his teacher that his face swelled up and one of his eyes closed.
It was because of that and many other similar experiences that he resolved to become stronger than his persecutors. This led him to take up martial arts and to rely on his physical power to protect himself. He explained that later he realized that Satan was really behind these terrible persecutions. Satan knew what position Hyo Jin Nim had to inherit, and therefore wet ' to great lengths to destroy his will to live a principled life.
He said that Heung Jin Nim passing away, together with a serious car accident that he was involved in, forced him to re-evaluate a number of points about his life. In particular, he came to a deeper realization of the importance of his spiritual responsibility. Finally, after offering many serious conditions, he became responsible for the second generation of blessed children and also became world president of CARP.
Hyo Jin Nim has been victorious through a very difficult time; who else could be more qualified to help young people and ourselves find True Parents' heart?
Often we face a situation where Father gives us certain directions. There are many people who receive Father's directions absolutely. However I also see many people struggling with the direction that Father is giving. Maybe their intentions are to try to understand why Father is asking them to take a certain course. However, perhaps because they cannot relate the directions that Father has given them to their personal experience, they have difficulty understanding them. Every time I see this situation, I think about the future of mankind as a whole, because in order for mankind to become one, they also must unite with and understand God's will and direction. If we, as Unification Church members, have difficulty in grasping and putting into practice Father's advice, this is not a good precedent for the rest of humanity.
So if True Parents represent Heavenly Father's ideal, then the words that God speaks might not have any physical form, but they come through True Parents. If Father is the embodiment of God's love, whatever comes from Father has that absolute aspect of love. If True Parents are the embodiment of Heavenly Father's essence, then whatever comes from Father should be interpreted in such a way. Ultimately we want to become children of God, don't we? We want our bodies and minds to become absolutely one with Heavenly Father, forever and ever. How can we reach that goal? It is very important for every one of us to interpret Father's words and actions as reflecting God's qualities. If you believe Heavenly Father is the absolute, eternal, loving Being, then you must receive the symbol of His love as such.
It is our responsibility to understand Heavenly Father, and to inherit his qualities. That is very important for your sakes and for your descendants' sakes. Moses, at the desert of Zion, was told by God to strike the rock once to bring water to the thirsty Israelites. But Moses struck the rock twice, disobeying God's commandment. Abraham was told by God to make an offering and to cut the prepared offering in half. But he forgot to cut the dove. Let's try to imagine we are in Abraham's shoes. When he received that kind of direction from God, how should he have thought? How would we have thought in the same position as Abraham, or Moses? If my goal is to become one with Heavenly Father, should I deviate from the direction of the person I am trying to become one with? Is that the way to become one with God? Even a little misunderstanding or misinterpretation can cause such bad consequences.
So why are we in such a precarious situation in the first place? It is because of our portion of responsibility. If we are to become the children of Heavenly Father, we must reflect His qualities. The children should inherit everything from the parents. When you have children, they inherit all that you possess. If God is the Creator of all things, then we must inherit creatorship. If Heavenly Father created for the fulfillment of His ideal, then we must help create the same ideal. If God's ideal of creation is to manifest love, there must be a base which can reciprocate love. We might not fully understand what Heavenly Father intends when He gives us directions, but we should try, within our minds, to bring about an answer which can satisfy us, and in turn motivate us to follow God's directions. When Abraham stood before the altar, preparing to cut the offering, he perhaps wondered why he needed to cut the offering. If he couldn't see clearly enough into God's reasons then he should have tried to create an answer within himself to motivate him towards God's direction. In order to act we must know. Sometimes Heavenly Father gives a direction to follow, but we're not sure why, and God is not telling us why. In that case we should try to produce an answer which will motivate us.
In Abraham's situation, God had a clear goal of separating good and evil. But since Abraham couldn't comprehend that depth of Heavenly Father's thinking, then at least he should have tried to think, "Heavenly Father is my Lord, my Father, and he directed me to do these acts. So as a son and as a servant to God, I must obey Him absolutely." On a more humorous side, Abraham could have thought, "Maybe God wanted to take• half of it in the morning and half of it in the afternoon. So I'll obey because I want to please God." And based upon that kind of naive understanding, he should have acted according to God's direction. If Abraham had united with God's direction and fulfilled his portion of responsibility, even based on a naive understanding, God could have claimed the ideal result.
Adam and Eve should have thought in the Garden of Eden, when Heavenly Father told them not to take the fruit of good and evil, that "God is saying this for my sake, because He does not want me to die. God has absolute concern for my life, and I should in no way attempt to bring suffering or heartache to God." That portion of responsibility is left to man, because through fulfilling this responsibility man becomes the recipient of God's love. So within our mind, we have to bring about an answer which will unite with God and True Parents' direction. That is the most important key to having a successful life of faith. We must realize that it is within our ability to motivate ourselves to properly unite with Father's direction.
Many times we compromise Father's words because we do not take them seriously. Many times we interpret his words based upon satanic living standards and traditions. Father recognizes the abilities that many of you possess. The reason that you have these abilities is for you to use them to assist True Parents. Everything in the creation, when it comes together in harmony, manifests beauty. All the qualities that you possess must converge centering upon True Parents in order to have a true effectiveness and true value here on this earth.
We must realize that what we possess inside comes from Heavenly Father. All of our qualities should reflect the ideals of Heavenly Father. All the various entities in creation uplift and enhance each other's appearances and qualities. You are in that kind of position also. Because of the qualities you possess, God's love can be uplifted. For you to uplift Heavenly Father's love, you must realize that you are within His domain. Since True Parents represent Heavenly Father, you must be within their domain.
Many of you are blessed, right? What do you think about when you create children? What goes through your mind when you give and receive love with your spouse? Do you long for Heavenly Father as much as you long for your wife or your husband, even at the moment of lovemaking? What is the whole purpose of you uniting with your wife?
The struggle of Abel and Cain, of good and evil, starts from the womb. When Rebecca bore Jacob and Esau, they struggled within her womb. God said, "Within you there are two nations struggling." Why does man need to struggle from the womb? We must restore ourselves. The only way that man and woman can unite under Heavenly Father is to first of all become one with God's ideal as an individual. Centering upon the ideal man and woman, the Blessing can come. Receiving the Blessing means completely receiving Heavenly Father. Only centering upon this oneness with God should we consummate love. Through this act of love we substantiate our love by creating our children. Through you yearning to give yourself totally to your spouse, and the spouse doing the same to you, you bring about precious life. When you look at your children, what do you see? You should see the intensity of love that you had in the moment of that lovemaking. If you longed for Heavenly Father in that moment and if you longed absolutely to become one with your wife, that is what you should see when you look at your child. That is the fruit of your labor.
Father dedicated The Washington Times in 1983.
Last week I visited Camp Sunrise. It is a very wonderful place. Father has told us to speak Principle for eight hours a day, and I am sure all of you are doing your utmost to fulfill this goal and to witness in your tribal areas. When I visited this beautiful camp, all the tribal leaders gathered there to greet me. You know the significance of the tribal leadership, I hope. I felt very peaceful and undisturbed there. But as I was driving back I was concerned about the future of this facility.
The reason that we acquired it was to utilize it for the purpose of attaining the goal that Father has set for 1992 of 30,000 members. I asked myself, how many of the blessed families truly intend through their marriage to ultimately become one with Heavenly Father? And that through their marriage they can separate from the fallen lineage? When you conceive your children you should think these children represent love. They are your substantiation of God's love. If your love does not correspond with True Parents' love for Heavenly Father, and the belief that we are sons and daughter of God, you are in big trouble. You cannot be in the position of becoming a model example of Father.
If you can't bring the example of Father into your own family life, I have true concern for the future of new faces, new members coming into the church. A workshop is like a womb, preparing them so they can commit their lives centering on the Principle. The Principle life is the beginning of their spiritual life. In order to create the ideal womb, we must have an ideal body. Without having the ideal body to consummate
God's love, we are going to bear crippled children. They won't be healthy. If we, as Unification Church members, the body of True Parents, cannot become one with True Parents, we are in big trouble.
Some of you said to me that when Father asked everybody to move out of the New Yorker, you had certain reservations. But after you went out, and settled down in your tribal areas, you understood Father's intention. Living in communities and in apartment complexes with many non-members, we have no choice except to have give and take with them. "I understand Father's intention and am truly grateful," one brother told me. Centering upon Father we have the responsibility to multiply God's love and truth.
God expects you to become one with His direction because He expects you to become like Him. Don't deviate! Please become one with God's direction.
No matter what you did in the past, Heavenly Father ultimately wants to forgive you. But in order to receive this forgiveness, you must sacrifice your past self and receive Him completely. The way of true liberation is for you to separate from yourself and give in to Heavenly Father. That is what God is doing. He is separating from Himself, and He is giving Himself to us for the sake of the realization of love. In order for anyone here to win God's heart, he must do that.
When people have some special credential, something they worked hard for, they want to be proud of it. I understand that. But that emotion should extend itself to embrace God, not to separate yourself from Him. The reason that you have those qualities is ultimately to benefit everyone else. If you have gained a Ph.D., the reason to have this should be to become one with everybody, and not exclude yourself from other people because of your special knowledge.
This is the reason to be a Unification Church member. If you have a certain ability, you must bring it within the domain of Heavenly Father. You must let God's love be enhanced through the quality that you possess. Please, no more self-aggrandizement. Every time I see that I am disheartened. That kind of attitude might be functional in Satan's domain, where there is constant conflict, but it should not be here.
Every time I come here, I am always faced with my responsibility to hold Father's place. I want to keep the spirit of Father burning when he is not here. It is difficult because I have to separate from myself completely. If there is a single iota of "myself" dwelling within me, I can't take Father's place. All of you expect to understand True Parents through me. I cannot say "no," no matter how hard it is, no matter how much my physical body calls out and says, "Take it easy, you spoke last week. Take some rest, you are doing too many things!" But if I don't come here to Belvedere, my heart is not liberated. For the week that I am absent, my heart is not the same as the week that I come. All of you must do the same, because we represent the 12 tribes. Centering upon True Family we must spread out north, south, east and west, and centering on the four position foundation, we must perfect ourselves. The purpose of the 12 tribes is that centering upon the True Family the ideal world begins and spreads out in all directions of the globe.
We all bear the same responsibility but somebody has to keep the responsibility burning. I know sooner or later you will follow, but I must lead the way. I want to commit myself to Father, not just in a conceptual realm, but I want to bring it into substance. I hope that you gain certain things when you come here, but even if you gain just a minute amount, I want to keep coming. Every time I come here I try to prepare a fresh approach to fulfilling our responsibility. Our goal must be to reach out to everybody in the world and to bring them closer to True Parents.
The only reason that I come here is because I love Father. That is why I want to come here and keep you strong. I am truly grateful to God and Father for liberating me and giving me the opportunity to become one with my mind, so I want to pass that on to you.
That is why I am telling you that you must surrender to God's love. The worst enemy of love is arrogance. You can't hold yourself in the highest position if you expect to receive God's love. So for the sake of the future of the Unification Church, and for your children, you must set a right example and create a right atmosphere for them. Children are learning every minute. Even many of the blessed children are learning things other than Father's example. They are learning things from the fallen world that are not God's standard. They are following idols other than Heavenly Father. So please, you set the example. All of the things that you possess should enhance Heavenly Father and His love. They should uplift and bring joy and happiness to everybody.
Father is always saying to us that we must live for the sake of something greater than ourselves. Our existence is for the sake of this family. All the qualities that we possess come from our parents. When every brother and sister within Father's family longs to become one with True Parents, and longs for the unity of this family, then within this family we will represent a unique quality of God's love.
That way we can preserve and multiply our 12 tribes. Heavenly order is very important. In order to have unity, there has to be a center. Even within the True Family, there is structure; there are subject and object positions. That is why Satan has desperately tried to claim the elder son's position, because it is absolutely necessary to fulfill the ideal. Even Satan, in order to create his sick ideal, must use the Principle and establish subject and object relationships. There has to be that order. Without it, you cannot establish God's community.
The reason that Satan wants his own kingdom is because he wants to have absolute dominion and control over his destiny. In order to have absolute dominion there has to be that kind of structure. But Satan's ideal is a self-generating, exclusive ideal. He could not see himself as a creation within God's ideal, so he began to separate himself from God's ideal. He started thinking, "God doesn't love me anymore. I am not satisfied with the position that I have; I want Adam and Eve's position." "My, I." That is the seed of evil. This is very important. In order for us to move united as one entity, it is absolutely necessary to apply this formula of subject and object. Father cannot force you to follow this order, because you have responsibility. Only through responsibility can man receive Heavenly Father. That is why (sod must just sit sometimes, not being able to do anything, just suffering.
Our true selves long to become children of God. So, our actions must coincide with the direction that our heart yearns for. We must become absolutely one with our heart. Our heart yearns to become one with True Parents. Many times the reason that we are being held back is because of our body. We just give into what our body is used to: our habitual way of life. Many times we spend so many hours sleeping because we are used to that pattern of life. But we have to exceed that in order to reach the goals that Father has set. We must live an extraordinary life.
Your heart wants to become one with Father, but what is holding you back is your old way of living. You must make the ways of God your new habits! Heavenly Father is desperate to save mankind. He is willing to forgive us all. And he is desperately trying to wake us up! That is God's way of living. We must become used to His way of living. That is why Father stresses denying sex, food, and sleep -- whatever aspects of your physical body are stopping you from doing godly things. You must separate from those kinds of things and become used to God's way of living.
Sometimes medicine is hard to swallow, but we need it. I need it too. Every time I speak, I remind myself of these things. I know these things, but when I share them, it helps me, too.
Father wants to do so much for America. He has so many plans for you. I know all of you are at your prime age. You are not old yet, you are ripe! You have prepared yourself to a certain point, so from now on really focus on adopting God's way of living into your own life. Motivate yourself to do a little more each day. Invest a little more for the sake of the future.
Every day you can make a difference, and we can ultimately be worthy to have dominion over all the things that Father has established for our future. Father expects everyone here to become God's vanguard, to set issues, to spark, the dormant mind of man. He wants us to become the educators of the future America, the leaders of a neon spiritual awakening in America. This country must accept the fact that in order to unite the world, it must first unite the religious community. More and more people are awakening to this great ideal. We are the vanguards, you must not forget that! Father has created these projects, but we represent Father, so you must take the leader's position. If you don't, someone else will fill your shoes. How can you let that happen? If you do, all of the time that you invested in yourself to prepare for this point will be wasted! Father is trying to give you a better future.
If we have the means to spread the message out to the people, what do you think will happen? Do you think we can influence people? We can! People are becoming more and more fed up with what they see on TV. If we can give a clear direction for this human race, for the sake of global peace and harmony, many people will be interested. From that moment, spreading the ideal is no problem. Many times the reason that people don't join is because they are afraid of the response of their peers. But if we can create an atmosphere where people are gaining interest in the Unification Church, then we can ignite a chain reaction. People want to follow an appealing direction. We should appeal to them! The way for us to do that is for us to have control over our body. We must connect our own body to the greater body of America. We have to be purely centered upon True Parents. Right now we have not purified ourselves enough.
Do you understand what I am saying? It is in our best interests to become absolutely one with Father's words. The responsibility to do so lies in our hands.
We must endure the tribulations and hardships because we want to bring the ideal world to Heavenly Father. I want to offer God's ideal to my children, so they can pass it on to their children and your children, and grandchildren, and so on. So please join with the True Parents and the second generation to go into the Kingdom of Heaven. In Moses' time, the first generation should have gone together with the second generation into Canaan. They could not. But at this time, the first generation and second generation should walk into Canaan together. Please unite with True Parents. Centered upon that unity the second generation will unite with True Parents. How can you as a parent say, "Well, my son will do the job"? What kind of parent is that? I don't want to pass my responsibility onto my children without me fulfilling mine. You must live up to the promise that you made when you took the Blessing vow and drank the Holy Wine. If you don't, you deceived God. You made a promise to Him and you are just trying to take advantage of the Blessing which was bestowed upon you. Do not take that kind of fallen course.
Please become ideal Unification Church members, becoming absolutely one with Father. It takes great courage, into. Intelligence and talent to make yourself believe and actually follow that course. It takes courage to fight with Satan in every moment of your life.
I am faced with fulfilling many responsibilities, just as you are. Instead of complaining, I try to bring about a conclusion that unites with Father's expectation. You can do the same.
So I want you to give more effort, just a little bit, it all depends on how you think. If you can fulfill this, you can have everything. I will be grateful to you, and our family will be grateful to you. I will try my best to make you happy. What does that mean? It means I will truly take care of your children. So can you promise me that much? Then raise your hands, please!
Today I want to talk about love. When we talk about love, what is the first thought that comes into your mind? (True Parents!) Do you have certain expectations about love? Is that expectation limited or unlimited? When we address the issue of love, we want love to be forever. If I could possess love, if I had the will and the ability to do this, I would want that love to be with me as long as I live. And if I have an eternal soul with the potential to live forever, then I would want the love to do the same. I would want love to be with me forever and wherever I go.
Why are we here? I am sure none of you are sitting here because you want to do things just for yourself. You are here for a greater purpose. We are trying to create a world where love can exist everywhere we go, where we can embrace and shake hands with every person. We expect this love to last forever once we create it. We don't want love to diminish. In my heart I expect that within the path of love there are no barriers. I can be liberated to the extent of the expectation that I hold. If I expect love to be eternal and everlasting, I can look at this person right here and feel the same. Love is eternal and unbounded. I can't say to myself, "I lost love," just because of some obstacle that is in my path. If I say to myself, "I have lost love," then in my heart I do not really have true love.
It is very easy to react with anger when someone provokes us. But if I believe in the unboundedness and the eternal aspect of love, I must stand in front of that situation with a higher quality of love. As long as I return an "eye for an eye," then the cycle of destruction will not cease. Of course we all hope that we will not run into that kind of circumstance. But we know that is not the case.
What has Father been doing for the 17 years that he has been here? America has done so much to cause grief to his heart. He poured out everything that he had and he wanted to give even more. Why? Because he believes in God's ideal and possesses God's unbounded, everlasting and unchanging love. He is trying to convey the quality of love that he possesses to you, and in order for him to be true, his actions must comply with his thoughts.
I am sure many of you have your personal views toward Father. For me, the overwhelming aspect of our relationship is the life-changing love that he has shown me. The way that he looks at me and embraces me has never changed, from as far back as I can remember. I used to follow Father all over the place. He would take me around with him every chance that he could. Sometimes I used to sit in Father's lap and I felt there was no place on earth that could provide the same comfort and security that I experienced at those moments. And when I was away from him, I lost everything. Physically I was busy, but my heart was in trouble. When I see Father now, he looks at me with the same kind of eyes that he looked at me when I was young, and he touches me with the same kind of care that he used to give me. It is all because of his unchanging love toward me. His love for me never wavered.
Father knew that in order for me to possess that love, I must make the base to receive that love on my own. In order for man to be one with Heavenly Father, he has the responsibility to make the right choices. By uniting with God absolutely, individuals can receive the eternal love that is waiting for them. If I am going to be the possessor of that absolute love, I must have the same ability to perpetuate the love of my father. When I look into my children's eyes I must have the same kind of intensity and essence of love that my father had for me.
When we go to the matching or the Blessing, we have certain expectations of our partner. I am sure everybody here felt that kind of feeling, even slightly: "I hope that my wife will be as beautiful as a princess" or "I hope my husband will be handsome, strong, and very well-mannered." There seems to be some kind of universal standard of beauty in everyone's mind, right? I am speaking about beauty on a physical level.
When we look at a beautiful model's face, we know it is physically beautiful. But when Father matches, everyone gets their turn. We are all unique with different shapes and sizes.
But what makes us leap further than the physical reality? If the universe is created through love, what about the less beautiful faces? Is there only one kind of tree in the woods, only one kind of fish in the ocean, one kind of bird flying in the sky? Everyone goes into the matching with certain expectations and wishes that their partner will be pretty or handsome. But we have some very interesting looking people here.
One time Father was matching a crippled woman. Her appearance wasn't bad, but she was crippled. She couldn't use her legs. She was eligible for the matching and the Blessing, so she attended. At that point Father was very concerned because she came with the desire and expectation to be blessed by Father, the same as everybody else. She had a pure intention. She said to Father, "I know my physical situation. If there is no one who is willing to take me, that's fine with me. I just wanted to come and participate in the Blessing because I believe I can have that much hope." Deep inside Father really wanted to bless this woman to somebody. He was thinking, "I want to bless this person, but what if nobody volunteers? That will break her heart. And if I just choose somebody, match that person with her, and they have crippled children, then he is going to blame me forever."
Father prayed and looked around. He saw a skinny Korean gentleman with very deep eyes. Father looked at him and some feeling went toward him so he asked, "Would you take this woman? If you take this woman, you will go down in the history of the Unification Church, because you will truly set an example for the future. I promise you your children will be beautiful and handsome." The man agreed to take that woman. Later, when Father was touring, he met that couple. The man jutted out in front of Father and Father was a little surprised. The first thing he said was, "Look at my baby, Father." Father looked at the baby and said, "Oh, he is a very handsome baby." This man was very proud of his son.
But that's not important. Let's say my son or daughter was crippled. Would I love my crippled child? I have love for my children no matter who they are. In matters of love, no matter how wise or how old we are, we still have more to conquer. I am grateful that my children are not crippled. But if I had to face that situation, what would I do? Ask that of yourselves. Then, depending on the answer, we can see whether we have love or not. Father felt a deep parental love when he saw that crippled woman. He wanted to do everything in his power to bring the Blessing to her. If we are to inherit Father's heart, we must do the same. If we can't, we are not worthy.
If you have a spouse, you want to spend time together, right? Let's pretend I have that kind of wife that nags because I don't spend enough time with her. I'm too busy doing other things. Her intention is she wants to spend time with me, that's all. What would you do, as the husband?
Suppose she says, "Spend more time with me. Why are you always busy? Spend some time at home with me. Let's go out together. You haven't taken me out for over a month." Nag, nag, nag! I could say, "Be quiet, wife!" But a good response is: "Wife, listen to me. You know I love you. And my love is not just for you, but for my children and for this family. Now go outside and look around at the world. Can you find joy and happiness everywhere you look? No, we can't find that in this fallen world. I love you and my family so much that I want that same kind of loving atmosphere to be everywhere in the world as our children grow up. I feel that truly loving you is loving our children and the world. The love we have between us is so precious that every time I look at my child it reminds me of that moment of love we shared. I want that love to be able to blossom in an atmosphere of love also. That is why I am going out to the world to create that atmosphere of love. Please don't suffocate our love." Say that to your wife, instead.
I have the kind of attitude that if I run and fall and scrape one knee, I'll get up and be grateful that I didn't scrape the other one. You can get up and kick the rock that made you tumble, or blame the things that caused you suffering, but instead be grateful that you are here, living and breathing. Be grateful that you have the opportunity to make a difference in the world and to have a family. It is up to you. There is nobody out there who can make it better for you. It is you who makes your own destiny. If I say to myself that I want to become a child of God, and I want to create the Kingdom of Heaven where God can reside every single moment, it is up to me. It is up to us!
We can think about and discuss the technical aspects of the Principle, but the fact is that we must live it. Every individual has his responsibility to make the foundation of substance. What does that mean? If you long to become one with God, you must make the foundation of substance to receive Him and everything about Him. No one else can make it for you.
Of course, when I look at my son, I wish I could do everything for him. I can try my utmost to make a good environment for him, but ultimately he must make a choice every step of the way. He is saying, "I want to do this, I like this, I don't like that." I can't force feed him, although I may want to do that so he doesn't have to go through the trouble of choosing what is right or wrong. Ultimately for him to become a true son he must possess the ability to perpetuate the love and lifestyle that his father had. Can you perpetuate the love given you by True Parents?
You all like independence, don't you? You must have the quality of love which can receive Heavenly Father and be able to return the things that you have received. You must have the ability to generate within yourselves the kind of love that God has given you. You must have the ability to return His love. You must develop the power to emanate, not just absorb.
I think about Father, especially when I am alone. When I listen to the songs that I offer to him, I always cry. Why? Because I truly want to be free in my actions. I want to be free in the eyes of God and in the eyes of my parents. The only way that I can accomplish this desire is to sacrifice myself for the sake of love by following my father's tradition and his path. When I do that I feel free in front of him and in front of God. When I do otherwise, I want to hide. I might feel fine at the moment because the people around me indulge in the same things, but when I think about my father, I want to find a hole and crawl into it. In my heart I want to be free. Do you want freedom? If you walk the life of Principle, you will find true freedom because you become justified in front of God and True Parents. If you live for the sake of love, you will be truly liberated.
I want to liberate everything. Every time I hear rock and roll, the music makes me happy. When you look at the creation, there is such a mystical quality. A lake early in the morning with the fog lightly settling down on the surface is incredibly serene and pure. And you also notice that, before a really blue sky, there is always a thunder shower -- plenty of noise! There was nothing wrong with David, in the Bible, rejoicing in the presence of God by dancing with his natural body. But you must realize what Satan has done. He has taken everything that can make us physically happy and made it his, because he possesses the physical world. I'm not advocating rock and roll. The point I am trying to make is that nothing belongs to Satan. These days we put greater emphasis on the cover than on the essence.
People have to elaborate simple words into great phrases. Instead of using the word "sacrifice," we have to hear, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for you country," before we can get inspired. People like nice external packages. The outer physical package of rock and roll brings excitement. That's what people like. But the essence can be evil. People who listen to rock and roll just like the feeling that emanates from the rhythm of the music. They don't care about the lyrics. But because people like the rhythm so much, they unknowingly absorb the lyrics at the same time. Satan is pouring his message into those unconscious people. They are not analyzing the lyrics; they are just having a good time bouncing around. It is just like when you first wake up, or when you are drunk or physically disoriented. If somebody tells you something, you believe it. And if that process is repeated over and over again, it affects you very much.
I feel, and Father said also, that in the future the ideal world will be mainly comprised of the performing arts. Why? Because the essence of art is harmony. In drawing you harmonize colors in the frame of the picture. In music you combine different notes and harmonize them within a song. The ideal world is harmonious; all the different, unique individuals come together harmoniously and create a beautiful piece of art. Heavenly Father can look at that art and be proud of it: "Wow, look at what I have created! A masterpiece, changing in its quality, but eternally harmonious." This would be an everlasting piece of living art. Can you imagine an artist who can create music that has a life of its own, that can multiply and make baby notes? Within this physical world it is impossible for us to create something like that. But it is possible for us to create a living music within ourselves, by first becoming one in mind and body, then one with others, and finally multiplying children. And our descendants will continue to create this living art that will extend into eternity. So we have the power, just as Heavenly Father does, to give eternal life to things that we touch. Doesn't that make you happy?
We can literally make decisions affecting living species. If we wanted to wipe a species off the face of the earth, we could do that. Man has too much power now, that is why he is arrogant. But mankind must realize why we are the only creatures in the universe who have the power to create and have dominion over things. The reason for that is because we are the children of God. Children must possess the same qualities as the parents.
Yesterday I visited the 8,000 Blessing celebration and I saw so many children. Every time I look at them, it is very hard for me. If we are truly concerned and truly want to be responsible, every time we look at those children it should make us serious. I didn't have the best environment growing up. But I want the best for our children. Truly, that is what we have to think about, because if we value our precious spiritual inheritance, and if we want to make it last, we must have children. No matter what kind of wealth you possess, you are not going to take it with you to spirit world. What is your life ambition? I believe it is the right thing, as Father's son, to value Father's tradition and to make sure that his name and his values and his vision can live on.
If you want to be a success, you have to plan for the future. Our children are our future. We must make an environment where we can be sure that the right things will be provided for our children. Make sure the things that they embrace are the right things. I want to make sure of that. That is why I stress this point so much.
Let me tell you a simple philosophy. I feel, in the eyes of love, one's self must diminish. That is what sacrifice means. When I love my brother, if giving something to him will bring him joy, I want to give it to him. If I love my wife, I want to give everything to her. If I love my children, I want to do anything to provide something that can make them happy. If it means for me to work until I drop so I can feed my family, or so that I can bring some kind of joy and happiness to my family, I will do that. As a father, if I truly love my son, and if I truly am concerned for his future, although the words that I speak at that moment might not please him, I will say them. My personal feeling diminishes because I love my son. Of course I want to make him happy. I would like to feed him candy all the time because he likes it, but it is not good for him. Looking at him in the moment, I want to satisfy his needs. But I love him. I am not concerned just about the moment but for his future. That's why I am willing to say things he doesn't want to hear because I love him. My feelings diminish because I am living for his sake. Do you understand? That's what love is.
Frankly speaking, for a while I lost the enthusiasm of being here at Belvedere and speaking to you. I had the fire in the beginning, but it weakened. We wet e not united. But it was wrong on my part to just follow my feelings. I have recommitted myself. We can all do that! That is what I always tell the blessed children. That is what I believe! I don't care about the physical aspects of life.
What is more important to me is eternal love. I will not take the physical quality of love and try to compare it to the eternal quality of love. Within eternal love, the physical quality should exist, too. But it is not an equal thing. That is why, if you understand love, you have to be humble. Why? Because you must look at each other with that eternal quality of love if you wish to become perfect.
We all have our unique characteristics. It is our responsibility to develop them to their fullest. The reason that we have such unique qualities is for the sake of truly loving others. If I am talented in music, or speech, my melodies and my words should bring joy and happiness not just to myself but to everybody! When you take your gifts and claim them as yours, separating yourself from the rest, that is the greatest sin. Do you understand that? That is the sin that Lucifer committed. He should have realized that his existence was within the realm of love, but he thought otherwise. He separated himself from the realm of love and started thinking on his own. He went farther and farther away from God and eventually had the guts to tempt Adam and Eve. He believed that God didn't love him as much as Adam and Eve. Of course God loved him! The position that he held had a purpose in God's ideal. If he fulfilled his position and responsibility, he would be included in God and man's ideal. But he didn't think like that. "Oh, look at Adam and Eve, and look at poor me." He separated himself from the path of love. So please, that is the lowest human attitude that anyone can possess.
You can't rely on other people's words to make your life of faith a true one. Study the Principle. Pray every day and read it. Try to make that connection to Father within yourself. I can provide a certain basic foundation, but it is you who must break through. I can't do that for you. I can't force feed it to you. Every time I come here, no matter how hard I try, I worry about whether you will understand. Of course you can do well. But you can't rely on other people for your life of faith. You've got to be responsible for your own future, your own life of faith. I don't want you to misunderstand this. I can speak and scold for hours and hours. But what is more important is that you take it from here. That is the only way we can propagate ourselves.
If I can give my whole heart, and if you can do as much, we can change America. That is always the purpose we must keep in our minds. Our goal is to save America. Everything that you do, give your hundred percent. You should pray. Read the Principle over and over again. I do that. You should do that too. It is my responsibility to remind you.
