I would like to report to you about the Fifth World CARP Convention that just took place in Thailand. But first I would like to explain the background of the CARP conventions.

On June 18, 1984, the day Father was scheduled to go to Danbury prison according to the original court sentence, Father initiated the organization of

World CARP, calling for the commitment of the second generation to vindicate True Parents. We CARP leaders made a proposal to Father that Hyo Jin Nim, as the leader of the second generation, be the World CARP leader. At the First World CARP Convention in Seoul in November 1984, Hyo Jin Nim was unanimously elected World CARP leader, and Father agreed.

In 1985, while Father was in Danbury, Hyo Jin Nim fulfilled a special prayer vigil condition from January until the end of May-120 days. That particular winter was unusually cold; it was therefore a very intense prayer vigil. All of Father's children participated in some way, centering on Hyo Jin Nim. Every day Hyo Jin Nim shed many tears, praying for the vindication of True Parents and for the liberation of God and True Parents from suffering and hardship. Through these 120 days, Hyo Jin Nim deeply inherited True Parents' heart.

On August 20, 1985, Father prays to seal Hyo Jin Nim's victory of heart gained while Father was in Danbury.

Hyo Jin Nim's Victory

Upon that foundation, he went to Japan in July 1985 for the Second World CARP Convention in Tokyo. Thousands of young people gathered together and united with him completely. They admired and respected Hyo Jin Nim. Many of them said, "I feel that Hyo Jin Nim is the Messiah for young people, and through Hyo Jin Nim I now find the value of Rev. Moon. I want to join and become a member."

After that convention, Hyo Jin Nim went to Korea and led the first 40-day workshop for blessed children. This workshop was very important. Father said, "Everybody must attend," but he didn't explain the reason why. It turned out that those who didn't attend the workshop were excluded from receiving the Blessing for the second generation one year later.

It was not an easy workshop for Hyo Jin Nim. Many of the blessed children came with suspicious hearts. But Hyo Jin Nim set the example by getting up earlier and going to bed later than anybody else. He prayed so deeply for everybody that eventually all the blessed children understood his heart and naturally united with Hyo Jin Nim. That workshop was victorious.

Then Father called Hyo Jin Nim back to East Garden. On August 16, 1985, one day after the completion of Father's 40-year wilderness course, which began on August 15, 1945, Father initiated the Holy Water Ceremony and declared the Day of Total Victory.

He could declare this based upon both True Parents' and Hyo Jin Nim's victory. Without Hyo Jin Nim's victory, Father wouldn't have been able to declare the Day of Total Victory.

In his speech at East Garden, Father said Hyo Jin Nim had restored the heavenly ideal elder brother's position, and that all the blessed members have become the heavenly restored younger brothers and sisters to Hyo Jin Nim and the True Children. Based upon Hyo Jin Nim's victory, Father could declare the Day of Total Victory publicly on August 20, 1985, the day he was released from prison. Father said that this was the most significant, joyous, victorious day for True Parents.

As you know, Father declared the Day of Heavenly Victory on October 4, 1976. That day marked the fulfillment of Father's responsibility. Then, less than 10 years later, Hyo Jin Nim was victorious, and Father could declare the Day of Total Victory in 1985. The following year, we had the CARP convention in New York, and in 1987 we had it in Berlin. Hyo Jin Nim was growing beautifully day by day, month by month, year by year.

We Had No Opposition

This year the convention was held in Bangkok, Thailand. It was very successful. The theme of the convention was "World Students and Original Ethics." Father personally gave that theme. About 2,500 people attended the Main Convention and Festival. The largest university in Thailand, Ramkhamhaeng University (which claims to be the biggest university in the world with half a million students), co-hosted the convention. The president (rector) of the university sent 95 official letters in his name to government and university officials and to many different organizations in Thailand, inviting them to the convention.

Because we were sponsored by this university, we had no opposition! The university put up signs all over campus about the CARP convention. Hyo Jin Nim invited the president of the university to lunch, and he told Hyo Jin Nim, "I want all 50 million Thais to see this convention.

We will show this event on TV." He is going to make a 30-minute videotape of the convention.

On August 28 a Welcoming Ceremony was held that was supposed to be for our members. Later we found out that many of the professors who were to participate in the International Student Symposium also attended; the next day at the Symposium many of the professors quoted Hyo Jin Nim. We hadn't expected any of them to come to that meeting since it was an internal meeting for members. Hyo Jin Nim had spoken some strong words, but all the professors were inspired by him.

At the Main Convention and Festival on August 30, the president of Ramkhamhaeng University gave the Welcoming Address. The Under Secretary of the Ministry of Education also gave a talk. Dr. Richard Rubenstein spoke about the importance of ideal ethics and quoted Father's speeches several times.

Then Hyo Jin Nim gave his speech, and everybody was moved by it. TV cameras were brought in. At the end of the ceremony, the professors and dignitaries came to Hyo Jin Nim and expressed their gratitude to him. After that, Hyo Jin Nim shook hands with all the CARP leaders.

Thailand means "Land of Freedom," and the Thais have a king whom they respect very much. They have never been invaded by a foreign power throughout their history, and thus they are very proud of their country. Thais have a sense of loyalty and filial piety toward their elders and toward the king. I feel there is great hope there. The Thailand family has brought more than 300 new members in this year alone.

The Power of True Love

Originally, the convention was to be held in the Philippines, but because of the political instability there, the location was changed to Thailand. When the Thailand family received the news, they were shocked. They had only four months to prepare. But they really invested their hearts from early morning before breakfast until late at night. Many spiritual phenomena took place during that time, and more than 100 young people joined.

Following the Main Convention we had the Han Ma Dang Games: track and field, Wonhwa-Do, soccer, basketball, and other sports. Thailand won first place. Afterwards, Hyo Jin Nim invited all the professors and dignitaries to lunch. They came and asked many questions of Hyo Jin Nim, and they listened intently as he explained to them about true love and about CARP and about what students and professors should do. He looked like their teacher. The president of Ramkhamhaeng University is a very young man, and very humble. In 'act, all the professors were like students in front of Hyo Jin Nim. I felt that this is the power of truth and true love.

After the Han Ma Dang Games, we had a Closing Ceremony. A Japanese singing group had learned one of Hyo Jin Nim's songs, so they performed it, and everybody was inspired. Hyo Jin Nim was inspired too. He had never heard one of his own songs being performed by another person!

At the Closing Banquet Hyo Jin Nim gave a beautiful and moving speech. He introduced the church leaders of the Southeast Asia region. All the church members and missionaries of this region had worked together for this convention, not just CARP members. At the end of the Closing Ceremony, Hyo Jin Nim went to the stage and sang a few songs and played guitar. It was a beautiful completion to the CARP convention.

The next day, up until the last moment before his departure, Hyo Jin Nim in- ï vested his heart in the members by signing materials for them as gifts. On September 1, I came back to Korea with Hyo Jin Nim, and we met with and reported to Father and Mother. They were so happy.

To Indemnify Father's Youth

I would like to mention that just before the convention, on August 22, Father called some young leaders together at Han Nam Dong (Father's house in Korea) and spoke for nine hours. In his speech, Father said that he has taken responsibility for the three years since he was released from Danbury -- until August 20, 1988. From now on, he said, the second generation must indemnify Father's youth. We know how much hardship and suffering Father went through when he was a young man in his 20s and 30s. Jesus Christ also endured much suffering and hardship. Father said that it is our responsibility to indemnify both Jesus' youth and True Father's youth. He said, "Until I was 30 years old, I never had enough food. Every day I was hungry."

Today, we should really be hungry to do our mission. When Father was young, the floor where he used to pray never dried; it was always wet. We should have that kind of determination. We are like David, fighting against Goliath. We must be courageous and bold.

Father said we must go the path of the Principle centering on heart. God is our vertical parent and True Parents are our horizontal parents. We should inherit that vertical center and the blood lineage centering on the vertical true love of God and the horizontal true love of True Parents. Through that we can inherit the lineage of God's heart.

Even if we have to risk our life, we must invest our total heart. We must inherit the elder son's birthright. Father already restored that position; so did Hyo Jin Nim. Now we as Abels must inherit that birthright too.

Father was basically addressing this speech to young people. All of us are young, including myself, so I think this is appropriate for everybody.

An Extension of True Parents

Hyo Jin Nim repeatedly says to the members that he feels he is the extension of True Parents at all times. "Even though Father might not play the guitar, the reason why I can play the guitar is because I am the extension of Father. Father already has the internal ability to do it, and I am just inheriting it from True Parents. Whatever I do is because of Father and Mother. It is not just because of my ability. I am part of True Parents and I don't exist at all in that sense." Hyo Jin Nim said that whenever he gives a speech or when any important thing comes up, he repeats at least 30 times, "I don't exist, I don't exist. I am part of True Parents." This is his internal attitude.

I feel we must resemble True Parents. Before that, we must resemble True Parents' children, particularly Hyo Jin Nim. We are younger brothers and sisters to Hyo Tin Nim, so we must unite with him first so that we can go through him to True Parents. We cannot go to True Parents directly.

Father and Mother are really concerned about us and are praying for us.

We should give our best so that Father doesn't have to worry about this country.

Let us do our best and bring victory.

This is my first time in Thailand and my second visit to a Southeast Asian country. This part of the world is predominantly Buddhist, and I feel that your country has a very big role to play in Heavenly Father's dispensation. We have to bring the fulfillment of Heavenly Father's will to every part of this world. It has to start everywhere and be expanded to the global spectrum. Therefore, this is an initiation point.

I'm sure most of you are seeing me for the first time. It's the same for me. I'm very happy; I feel very welcomed in Thailand, and I will carry this feeling back home and pass it on to our Parents.

We all understand through the Principle that the essence of God's creation is love. Heavenly Father wanted to substantiate His love through the fulfillment of His ideal. We too must have a goal to pursue in life. Many people value material possessions; some value knowledge; some value power; and some value science and technology. You might value a nomadic life. You might value nature and just want to be part of it.

Laws Deliver Us from Chaos

Why are there so many different kinds of value? When you look at democratic and pluralistic nations, there are small "societies" within one nation that all have different values from one another. With so many values existing among one people, endless conflict and struggle are inevitable. How can we deal with all these different kinds of values and value systems? How can we bring this world together?

Let's say I like to listen to popular music and I'm living with someone who likes classical music. If we don't have some kind of agreement or rule that every three hours we will alternate, then there is no way we can each listen in peace.

We see law as a regulatory means to impose and restrain or enforce rules. This sounds like some kind of diabolical oppression, but actually, laws and rules deliver us from chaos, confusion, and conflict. All the different creatures on earth can sustain their existence because of the fundamental laws of nature. The reason I can stand here is because of the law of gravity.

All of you understand the meaning of anarchism. If I am living in an anarchist society, good and evil co-exist. Let's say I am a good person and someone else is art evil person, and we co-exist together in that society. Suppose we are building a brick house together. I am trying to build it so that we can be cozy and warm, but the evil guy takes away all the bricks that I lay. In that kind of society there is always an evil aspect trying to go in the opposite direction from goodness. That society is not going to go anywhere. It is going to come to a standstill and then dissipate.

What is valuable to us? Things are valuable when they bring us joy and happiness. Joy and happiness must come to us through some substantial means. How does everything sustain itself? In order to exist, everything has to rotate. The Oriental philosophy of yin and yang says that perfection is a circle; two extremes are brought into oneness. That is ideal. What do we call this? Give and take action. In order to sustain an ideal form, there must be reciprocation.

Heavenly Father wants love.

That is His essence, and from that essence of love comes the emotion of happiness and joy. The only thing He wanted in His Kingdom was love. In order to substantiate this, He had to create this physical world of substance. That is why He created mankind, because through the fulfillment of man's responsibility in uniting and becoming absolutely one with Him, Heavenly Father's ideal was to be fulfilled. The responsibility of mankind is crucial in bringing about the fulfillment of the ideal that all of us desire.

Securing the Right Order

A perfected individual is a man becoming one with his original mind and uniting with Heavenly Father. In other words, our physical bodies are to be subjugated by the greater purpose, true love, which our original mind seeks. The ideal is where goodness subjugates evil.

How can we bring this eternal value into reality out of this chaos and disorder? In America equality means everything: "We want equality." Even homosexuals exclaim, "We want equality." Criminals say, "We want equality." However, equality actually means that everybody in this room can receive Heavenly Father's love. But in order to receive Heavenly Father's love, His principle has to be applied absolutely. Why? Because love itself is an absolute principle. If you want eternal joy and happiness, that can only be received from Heavenly Father. You can have give and take with many earthly things, but that pleasure will last only a short time. If you want eternal love, Heavenly Father has to be brought into the relationship.

Heavenly Father's absolute purpose and desire is to create an ideal Kingdom and to bring about the fulfillment of His ideal. He needs our love to deliver that ideal. Even Heavenly Father wants to be enraptured by a greater love. Then what is our responsibility?

I want to explain the significance of order. Why do you think order is important? Because only through order can we preserve, protect, and secure the ideal perpetuation of love. Establishing order in the Garden of Eden was crucial. Through order, through maintaining a true subject/object relationship with God, Adam and Eve would have been obeying Heavenly Father absolutely. Through Adam and Eve's absolute unity with God, they were to become the object of Heavenly Father's ideal. When Adam and Eve are absolutely uniting with Heavenly Father's word, they are substantializing love.

Adam and Eve were in a position to fall or not fall. That choice was clearly left to them. If through their own effort and responsibility Adam and Eve had perfected themselves and not fallen, they would have become ideal beings. They would have created an ideal foundation that Heavenly Father could receive. Then they could have reciprocated His love. Since Heavenly Father's love is eternal, then on that foundation they could have lived in perpetual give and take with God forever.

Why Does Suffering Mean So Much?

Responsibility and order go hand in hand. Both have a direct bearing on manifesting love. If the ideal Kingdom of Heaven is going to come on this earth, then we have to initiate action according to the Principle. Every step of the way has to be absolute and cannot deviate.

Do you think creating an ideal world is easy? But what else is more honorable and noble to do in the world? Nobody told you it was going to be easy. It took every ounce of Heavenly Father's energy to create. Responsibility is a blessing. Heavenly Father is giving you the opportunity to understand and to be the recipient of His eternal love, which is eternal joy and happiness. When you reach that point, you are living in total bliss!

Do we have to suffer? Yes, we must suffer. Is the path arduous and grueling? Yes, it is. Why are we willing to suffer? Why are we willing to sacrifice? It's not because Heavenly Father is suffering, or because True Parents are suffering, or because the True Family is suffering. We are willing to sacrifice ourselves because we know that there is an ideal and we know we can reach it. It can only be obtained through our responsibility and effort. We have to give 100 percent.

Why does suffering mean so much? When you are crying tears and repenting, that means you want to go back to the origin. It means you are denying your external status, your present false standards. Then when you can create an ideal reciprocal base with Heavenly Father, everything becomes true joy and happiness. Then you can truly appreciate what Heavenly Father has created, and you can benefit from it. You can rejoice over it. When the Kingdom of Heaven is substantiated on this earth, joy and happiness will perpetuate, and I promise you it will be eternal. That is why we are willing to suffer.

Your attitude reflects your beliefs, your value system. If your actions are not the reflection of your original mind, you cannot become an ideal man or substantiate an ideal environment. This ideal place can be represented only by the people who become the embodiments of True Parents' life, ways, and tradition. Nobody else can call themselves Unification Church members. This is the greatest prestige, the greatest honor. This kind of honor is not given lightly. Even secular honor is very hard to attain. Do you think that heavenly honor is any easier?

Our Emotions Are There For a Purpose

All the emotions that Heavenly Father has given you are there for a purpose. Why is there prestige? Because there is goodness. Why do we have the ability to hate? Because we want to eradicate evil. That is the original purpose of that trait. Why do we want to possess more? Simply because we want to possess God's love. Why do we have the desire to seek the greatest? Because the greatest thing is God's love.

I vowed when I came here that I would give every ounce of my energy. I came here to speak my Father's words. He gives his utmost. I am sure that my yelling is not too pleasant to your ears, but my words contain Father's suffering.

You must have a better attitude. I don't want to see any double standards. I don't want any understanding other than True Parents' standard in this movement. There is no "my standard." There is no Hyo Jin Moon's standard. Only Father's standard is true, because his value is absolute.

This is a serious time. We cannot bring about the ideal world I just by wishful thinking or memorizing books. We must know what the ideal is and how to go about obtaining it. We must follow Father's tradition. We must know Father's value. Those of you who promise absolutely to commit yourselves and become the embodiment of what I have been talking about, raise your hands. If you absolutely promise to Heavenly Father, "I will give my best, I will give my utmost to bring about the ideal of Heavenly Father, which is our ideal," raise your hands and let's be grateful to Heavenly Father. Thank you very much.

Excerpts from speech at the Closing Banquet
Jin Hun Nim

Hello, brothers and sisters! You may be wondering why I am here. Well, one good thing about being a younger brother to Hyo Jin Nim is that you can ask anything from him.

I asked whether I could come, and he said okay!

We had a special luncheon with the rector of Ramkhamhaeng University. I could see his respect for Hyo Jin Nim. I even heard that the prime minister of Thailand wanted to come but he was too busy.

As our movement gets bigger and more people are willing to help us, what kind of attitude should we have? We have to repent from the bottom of our hearts. Sometimes I feel that people outside our movement, like the rector, are working harder than us. They are so lonely, longing for Parents. Through his passionate speech, Hyo Jin Nim is asking you to do your utmost. Both he and Parents expect the best from you. As our movement gets bigger, we cannot just relax but should try harder.

This is a great event and happy occasion, but we have to be serious just like Hyo Jin Nim.

A Comment from Ursula McLackland Missionary to Thailand

The most rewarding experience for me, and maybe for many of us who worked hard to prepare for this convention, was to see Hyo Jin Nim smile and declare the 5th CARP Convention a success. He said, each year the convention becomes better, and next year's convention will be better than this year's. I'll be better and you'll be better."

The Significance of Danbury

From Korea, True Father asked that on August 20 all members in the New York area celebrate together the third anniversary of Father's release from prison -- the Day of the Victory of Danbury. Hyo Jin Nim gave a powerful speech on the absolute standard Father continually follows. Then Dr. Bo Hi Pak spoke, reminding everyone of the injustice done to Father and Father's complete victory over it. After that, Rev. Kamiyama shared deep insights about Father's heart in prison from his position as his constant companion. Listening intently to all this were Bill Sheppard and Larry Evola, two loyal men who took care of Father after Rev. Kamiyama left Danbury, and Larry's wife Teresa. Bill and Teresa then each humbly shared their unforgettable experiences with Father and Mother during this momentous time of offering.

I am sure all of you know that today is the third anniversary of the victory of Danbury. What are you feeling on this occasion? Are you feeling grateful? It is important for us to know the significance of Danbury and what it has to do with us.

You have heard in many testimonies from our elder brothers and sisters how Father's life was a path of much suffering. He went to prison six times, and the reasons why he went were always the same. I wasn't there during those times, but I have learned about them and I know those experiences were very deep and painful. The time Father spent ii- Danbury was a turning point in my own life, honestly speaking, because of what I saw Father go through. After I started to understand Father more, I saw a deeper side of Father's life and the reason for his suffering.

There is a difference between Father's realization of the Principle and my understanding of the Principle. Father started out with the desire to find the ideal. He received a revelation from Heavenly Father, the understanding of the purpose of life, and he determined to live according to that standard. We in True Parents' family have been following the example set by True Parents, and only as we grow are we gradually coming to understand the essence of what Father has been teaching us. As the days go by, I am realizing more and more of the depth of the Principle.

The Way of Supreme Sacrifice

Most of you know that after Danbury, the American people's attitude toward Father changed almost overnight. Prior to Danbury, people were saying that Rev. Moon had to have an ulterior, selfish purpose behind all his idealistic desires to save the people of America. The people didn't think they needed anyone to tell them to change. They said, "How can we believe Rev. Moon? Isn't he just like all those other 'prophets' who manipulate their followers under the guise of ideals?"

But after Father went to Danbury, the people no longer had a case to prove his manipulation. Why? Because Father voluntarily decided to go through the trial that led him to Danbury. There were options left; he could have avoided going to prison, but he didn't. That is the significant thing. He knew he had to let the American people know exactly where he stood. He was in America for a reason: to bring about the fulfillment of Heavenly Father's will, the Kingdom of Heaven, and to propagate the message of God at the cost of any sacrifice to himself. He had a purpose and he was determined to carry it out. To secular eyes, choosing to go to prison is crazy. When people compared that supreme sacrifice with their own standards, they were stunned. In many philosophies, both Eastern and Western, there is the concept of yin and yang, of two opposites becoming one. Continuity comes from circular motion. A man needs a woman to start a relationship. Let's be frank. When do we feel happiness? It's when we are making love with our husband or wife, right? Lovemaking brings us joy. People want that physical give and take of love in marriage. Let's face it, that is pure joy, because in that act a man and woman literally become one.

But in America today, the value of a relationship is so small, so external. Divorce is so wide-spread that people are starting to think of divorce as a norm, as a part of life. If a relationship doesn't work out, you just leave and start a new one. But a relationship that doesn't have an eternal base cannot last. We want to avoid this. When we step into marriage, our vows are meant to last forever. People just don't understand the meaning of eternal value, that absolute, unchanging value -- which is true love.

Hyo Jin Nim and Ye Jin Nim, representing Father and Mother, receive flowers at the August 20 celebration.

Our Lives Have to Be Based On an Ideal

Do you think a relationship can function without the ideal true love value? For many American couples, sex is the most important part of marriage. Communication, forgiving, understanding -- these are not seen as essential. But in order to bring us joy, our relationships have to be based on an ideal. If I am a composer writing a song, and the notes I write do not satisfy my original mind absolutely, I cannot get any joy out of it. But if I work hard enough to reach that ideal in a song, then I can feel happiness. If your ideal is based purely on the physical, then when you are satisfied physically, you feel temporarily happy. When that ideal starts to deteriorate, you are not satisfied anymore. But if your ideal is true love and that is your emphasis, then once you are absolutely united with that goal, your happiness and joy will be eternal. Obtaining that absolute goal of "true love, isn't easy, is it? What was the fall? It was an individual effort without an absolute standard.

Heavenly Father needs a substantial created world to build the Kingdom of Heaven. If God's ideal is goodness, joy, happiness, and all those blissful things we dream about and desire,

God must substantialize this. Unless we ourselves create our lives to have the magnitude of God and choose to live the way of goodness, His Kingdom will never come. Our consciousness, our awareness, our imagination, is unbounded. An evil person can think of a hundred ways to commit murder, but we can be creative in obeying Heavenly Father's will; that is what Heavenly Father needs.

Since Heavenly Father created the creation and gave us the Three Blessings, He obviously wanted to be a part of it. He doesn't want to be left out. His goal is to build the Kingdom of Heaven through a substantiation of true love on the earth.

To the child, parents are the representation of love, the embodiment of love. The conception of a child comes from the father's and mother's love and is a product of their love. As the child grows, he learns from his parents about the essential quality of a human being -- true love. Through Adam and Eve, God's love was meant to propagate. Through the love of the first parents, the seed of Heavenly Father was to be planted and spread through all the people of the world. Through the marriage of the children of Adam and Eve with the children of those around Adam and Eve, the true blood lineage of God would have literally passed to all the others, and that process would have gone on and on.

But because Adam and Eve failed to listen to Heavenly Father's commandment, they took the fruit of good and evil and fell. This means they united as one without Heavenly Father being present. That is deviation from the path of absolute goodness. You must understand that only with Heavenly Father can the way of goodness, the true love way, be substantiated. The only other way is the way of evil.

Hyo Jin Nim embraces Larry Evola.

You Are the One Who Decides

Our desire always motivates us to seek the greatest thing in life. What is the greatest thing? It is love. If we can perceive and understand the ideal value of true love, then through our desire we will reach it. Our desire is put there for our own sake, so we will be motivated to find Heavenly Father's true love. Through our responsibility, we will create a way to reach that standard of goodness. We might be trampled on along the way, and we might feel great pain, but we will go on; we will not hesitate or stop, because our strongest desire is to seek that happiness. The other things don't mean much if there is no love. When we get to our final destination, all the pain and suffering we went through will have been worth it. I hen we can accept everything in our life as having been a good experience.

Heavenly Father, as the Creator, wants to give us love; He wants to reciprocate with us, so we must give back to Him. That means we have to create something of our own. That's why we are endowed with the abilities of the Creator; and that's why we have responsibility. Of course this means we can also fall.

You are the one who decides whether to go this path or not. If you choose to unite with Heavenly Father, then you are creating something ideal. The effort needed to create is not easy. You have to apply yourself 100 percent. You have to invest every ounce of your mind and body. But through taking that responsibility, you will earn your way to become children of God. You will become the recipients of Heavenly Father's love.

Try to visualize Eve's struggle. She made effort, but she fell for Satan's temptation. In order to take a step, to go anywhere, you have to know where you're going. I am sure all of you sitting here want to know where you're going. Without knowing, it's very hard to follow, right? There has to be a commitment of some sort. The person making the effort has to follow the ideal he knows to be right. Eve decided to follow Satan's path. So without the absolute standard, your effort doesn't mean anything. I hope you understand this.

What I Can Do, You Can Do

Think about it -- if the moon shifted its orbit, we'd be in big trouble. We'd probably get sucked out of space or something. Our existence is quite fragile. But because of the absolute standard, the Principle, we can function and maintain our existence.

I will not deviate from Father's path. Whatever I did wrong, I will set it straight. Nobody helped me get to this point. That much I can say for myself. I got here to this point by myself. I am proud of that. I am saying this because I am no different from you. What I can do, you can do.

The problem we face is that everybody has his own interpretation of the Principle. Within the Unification Church, everyone has his own values and standards.

We don't want that here. America's pluralistic system doesn't work. You have to draw a line; you have to set an absolute standard at some point. Even among Christians there are so many different interpretations of the Bible. Many people say, "Oh, Rev. Moon is saying the same thing as So-and-So," or "There is the same kind of philosophy in the Orient." But Father is explaining the exact causes behind this earthly reality.

He is telling us exactly what went wrong, and exactly what to avoid. Knowing the cause is very important, especially the cause of the fall, which resulted in all this mess, confusion, and chaos. Without knowing the cause, you can never cure it.

We do not have some kind of vague relationship with Heavenly Father; it is an intimate relationship. A body follows the intention of the heart. You must find the right path, which your body must then follow.

Goodness Is Not "Anything Goes"

All of you have the desire to obtain happiness. If there is a barrier in front of you, you want to go over that barrier, don't you? Parents have to scold their children when their words aren't being heeded. As a last resort, parents have to spank their children when their awareness is too limited. That's because parents want their children to do what is right and good. Goodness is a specific function; it is not "anything goes."

Being spanked is painful. A child doesn't want pain; he wants joy and happiness. So you are, in a sense, putting up an artificial barrier by spanking your children which your children will hopefully respect if they don't want to get spanked again. They don't understand why right away, but they will obey their father's or mother's dÄ sire. As they continue to do what is good, their consciousness will develop. They will realize what you, their parents, were trying to accomplish during those times, during those struggles. You must understand -- parents have to discipline their children in order to let them know that they have responsibility. You must be responsible in order to become the children of God.

Once a person realizes what h has done wrong and changes, I will embrace him, I will forgive him. As long as you stay on the course and follow the principled path, I will love you as much as I love any person that I have a relationship with. Even though I may not know you personally, I will love you just as much. Love goes beyond time and space. But you must follow the principled path. That's the only way you can eternally feel joy and happiness. If you deviate from it, there will be a barrier waiting for you. You must face the barrier. That is the Principle. It's absolute.

We must know the significance of Danbury. Danbury to us means that Father, himself, always followed the Principle course. He showed us that even he himself has to live precisely according to the Principle in order for Heavenly Father's ideals to come true. We must unite with that idea absolutely. Adam and Eve's responsibility was to absolutely obey. Showing obedience is an act of love. You must understand -- Heavenly Father's purpose is love. That's why He suffered at the fall, and that's why He's still suffering.

The true way of life, the way of goodness, has to be physically demonstrated to us in order for us to follow; that's why we value tradition. I know many times the standard is hard to follow; it's hard to substantialize true subject / object relationships in our daily life. But we must do this for the sake of love, especially for the sake of our children. We want to do away with humanistic, superficial relationships. We really want deep, heartistic relationships -- something that goes beyond our external perceptions. In order to reach that depth, we have to strive for the eternal, heartistic, and absolute value.

Apply the Tradition in Your Life

This course is not easy. In order to reach the ideal in this life we must fight. Heavenly Father will persevere until He accomplishes the ideal. As long as this world exists, fighting will go on; that is guaranteed. If we die, Heavenly Father will find someone else to carry out His mission. I don't like to fight, so that's why I'm fighting now -- to end this war quickly.

It's a struggle for me to stand here, but it's because this is a battle. I'm fighting with your old concepts and trying to give you a new standard. Even I have to follow it. It's a struggle for me, too, but we have to become ideal individuals, because that's what we really want, deep in our hearts.

This is why I ask you to follow the Principle course. Know about the tradition and apply it in your life. Fight every day. Deal with Satan. Control the falsity in your life. You will overcome. Eventually you yourselves will be standing here at this podium speaking this truth all over the world. Father wants to give you that love. Because only through this way can we change the world. There is no other way! People have tried, but there is no other way. Father went to Danbury for the sake of that ideal. He did not hesitate even for a single moment. He went through that path of suffering and overcame the barriers and brought about the realization of true love.

We will give our utmost effort to break all the external barriers that Satan has brought into this world. We will build a bridge right over those barriers; and we will even break directly through them. Starting from you, this effort has to generate out. But we have to be clear enough and pure enough to reflect Heavenly Father's light of love clearly. Father set the tradition and we will follow it. If we make that ideal foundation of substance, we will eradicate Satan from our life. That's what we all want. Live for true love.

In carrying out what I have to do, many times I struggle because of my physical body. I get frustrated sometimes. I'm very hot-tempered, and I become over-stressed very easily. I often have to suppress my feelings. If I let those feelings linger around me, it will affect my work, so I have to find a way to get rid of all that excess energy. I've heard from some people that when they get angry, they go fundraising. That's a great outlet!

When I was younger, I did a lot of martial arts. In order to get rid of my angry feelings, I drained myself literally to the point of exhaustion. The first thing I'd do in the morning was exercise for an hour. That's how I could maintain my sanity in school. After school I used to go and work out to the point of exhaustion again. But nowadays I find other ways: I play my guitar or I do target practice or I go hunting. More often now, I go and talk with the blessed children. I try to make that my outlet.

The main thing is to always be thinking: How can I fulfill my responsibility? I want to fulfill my goals, so what do I lack? You have to find some way to work this out constructively, not destructively. Always be aware of your situation. Awareness is the key to combatting your struggles. Mobilize all the qualities that heavenly Father has given you and direct them in a way that will bring some fruitful result.

Understand what you should do and do it! Heavenly Father has given you everything you need to become children of God -- to reach that ideal point. You can be the next leaders of America. Your belief system is very important. A leader must stand for something; so stand for true love value. If you become an embodiment of that value, you will lead the next generation. Don't you have that desire? It's up to you. I know it's up to me. So make a choice -- decide clearly and decisively.

Please live up to your ideals and be a reflection of your beliefs. Those of you who can promise this to True Parents and to True Parents' family, please raise your hands.

Thank you.

Testimony of Bill Sheppard

Bill Sheppard, who just this year came out of Danbury, brought to the celebration a pair of shoes that Father had worn in Danbury and had given to Bill as a gift. Knowing their precious value, Bill wanted to present these shoes to Hyo Jin Nim, which he did, in a moving, spontaneous offering on the stage. Both men were in tears.

Bill Sheppard to Hyo Jin Nim: We share something together in that I became closer to your father than I did to my own. I was inspired by your speech. I'm here in the World Mission Center for the first time, and I didn't expect to hear and see what I've heard and seen. These are just inexpensive shoes, but they've been worn by a great man. I present them to you. [He presents the shoes to Hyo Jin Nim.]

Hyo Jin Nim: [Grasping Bill's hands that are holding the shoes] In a way, I feel that by Father giving you these shoes, as an inmate sharing the same hardships and injustices of the system in this society, he is telling you that you must carry on the mission that Heavenly Father has bestowed upon you. At some point, we all have to come to the realization that we have responsibility. I know these physically worthless shoes literally carried Father throughout his prison time, but he has been bearing the burden of Heavenly Father his whole life, trying to bring His ideal to fulfillment. I feel Father's giving you his shoes was his way of telling you indirectly that you can be a child of God and that you have to take initiative and be responsible. You must bear the burden; you must carry and propagate this message.

I know that's what Father meant and what he felt. (With tears) I cannot receive these shoes. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for offering them to me, but I cannot accept them, because I accept you as a man of God and I accept that you must fulfill your responsibility. I am grateful for your heart. Thank you. But please keep them. I know it means a lot to you.

I know it meant a lot to Father when he gave them to you. Everything he does has a purpose; I know that. Please keep these and accept that. Thank you very much.

Bill Sheppard: {To the audience] I thank you all. I have empathy with someone who says, "I find it very difficult to speak in front of people." However, I know I am among friends, some whom I have lived with, some who have visited me. Many of you out there came up to Danbury to visit Rev. Moon. My friend Larry and I spent an awful lot of time there together, and this is the first time I have seen him and his beautiful wife since those days.

I can recall many experiences we had over that period of time. They are very vivid to me and to Larry and Mr. Kamiyama. But some of you may be wondering -- I cannot keep this back -- "Are all these stories true or have they been embellished? Is someone telling you what to say?" Hardly. I could be considered the Danbury "loose cannon"; no one knows what I'll say! I spent time with Father, with Kami, with Larry. The four of us interacted personally on a human level and a spiritual level. Little did I know who I was dealing with at the time! I must confess to all of you: I am the person who said quite loudly at Danbury, prior to Father's coming, "This is the monster."

"I Expected Robots!"

The news of this monster's arrival came a month before Father came to Danbury. I was already there; I was among the people putting up the snow fences in front of Danbury. The snow fences weren't for keeping out the snow; they were to keep you out -- the Moonies. The prison security envisioned crowds of Moonies coming across the fields! [Laughter from the audience] So for days I had to put this fence up because of all of you. [More laughter]

I was in a very lucky position because I had the opportunity to talk with a lot of the high-level people who were serving time in Danbury. There were senators and congressmen, people from the Mafia, drug dealers -- all types of people. Now we had a religious leader coming -- Rev. Moon! Plus all of you, we thought. You were just going to come in waves and do all kinds of crazy things. I expected brainwashed robots! That's what the media had led me to expect.

Two Oriental men arrived in the middle of the night, Father and Mr. Kamiyama. They came into the dorm that I slept in. I paid them little mind, but there was a lot of talk. I can remember my first reaction upon seeing them the next morning. I turned to someone and said, "Which one is Rev. Moon?" And he said "I don't know." I wish this story was more sophisticated, but that's just the way it happened.

I became very close to "Kami," as he was known. We became good friends. I wasn't quite sure of the details of their religion or what their ceremonies were about, but I knew Father was a holy man. There is no one who would be embarrassed by the way he acted. I think Larry can bear me out when I tell you that I'm the skeptic. If there was something that transpired there that would have either embarrassed me or would have revealed a standard lower than you would have expected of Rev. Moon, I'd tell you. Believe me, I'd tell you.

While we were in Danbury, Father was continually planning many things; he had big dreams. He told us this would happen and that would happen. I know Larry and I couldn't believe half the things we heard. I was not a believer.

You must understand where I was coming from. Although very religious, I had no idea what the Principle was and who the Moonies were. To this day, in my own bumbling way, I can still insult Mr. Kamiyama. I didn't know it was a tradition among Oriental people that you weren't supposed to hug and kiss anyone. I didn't know this. I realized it today when he stiffened up like a board!

A Wake-Up Call from Father

When it came time for my good friend Kami to be released from Danbury I saw how worried he was about Father, and I made a promise to him. I saw the love for Father that he exuded, and Larry and I made a promise to him that we would take care of him. I think we all know and can admit that Father was taking care of us! I had no idea why, but we got up at three every morning. I'd like to be able to say that I got up every morning at three and was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but it just didn't happen that way.

Once I had to move upstairs to another room because I had duty in the fire department. Because of the move, I fell asleep late one night, and at three o'clock I was sound asleep. I tell you, I think I am the only person who got a wake-up call from Rev. Moon! Everyone was stunned. So was I.

I was in Danbury for four years. I just got out this year. I watched all the others go. First Mr. Kamiyama -- on December 4, 1984 -- then Larry, then Father. But then I began to receive messages from around the world, little notes from people, and visits periodically. Then Mr. Kamiyama sent me his spirit, if the form of this man over here that I know as "Tex" [Mr. Matsuzaki].

When I said Father is closer to me than my own father, that is very true -- and not in the superficial sense. What I think I can offer is to substantiate the many things you've already heard about Father. He showed me how to be a man. He showed me how to be a father, and how to be a son. He shared his innermost feelings with me.

This all occurred over a long period of time. No one can act that long. I wanted to ask you to apologize to me for making me have to put those snow fences up. But I must apologize to you. I feel I have had a very unique opportunity to share for a long period of time the innermost thoughts of someone who has deeply influenced all of our lives.

What I have to share with you is that the standard put forth by Father and his loyal friend was amazing to all of us. It was even more amazing to the two of us who were so very close to them. They were so real; they were living. Father would go over many things with us as a father and as a teacher. But that wasn't his job; we really had to pull it out of both Kami and Father. You see, they had said they wouldn't do any preaching. Well, we had to twist their arms. Their preaching was done by their actions in different situations. And for that opportunity that was given to me, I'm eternally grateful.

I'm eternally grateful to Father and Mother, the True Family, Mr. Kamiyama, and to all of you. I thank you.

At the close of his speech, Dr. Pak embraced Bill on the stage.

Hyo Jin Moon inaugurates Future Productions' new video duplication facility

The Future Productions staff members show Hyo Jin Nim around the factory

It was a hot, muggy Saturday, July 30, 1988, when Hyo Jin Nim inaugurated Future Productions' new video duplication facility in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. But with him he brought the refreshing spirit of True Parents and Father's vision of the direction our movement should take in the field of film and video. We were deeply grateful that he came and invested his enthusiasm in the new start we were making.

Hyo Jin Nim was especially inspired that Future Productions had taken the initiative to develop the seed that True Parents had planted. "This is the right kind of tradition," he said at the grand opening. "Father started this specific mission, but you, centering upon Mr. Matsuda and his staff members, took this mission upon yourselves. Through your responsibility, through your efforts, independently, you have reached a substantial standard."

Future Productions moved out of its original facilities in the World Mission Center to the 12,000 square-foot plant in New Jersey after nearly two years of searching for the proper site. The new location will provide much- needed room for expansion. "We looked at more than 100 places," said Ken Washino, vice president and technical manager, in a speech at the opening. "We feel that Heavenly Father guided us to the ideal place for us."

Hyo Jin Nim, along with Mr. Shunichiro Yoshida, representing Rev. Kwak, and Mr. Norio Matsuda, the director of New Future Films, cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the new factory. The more than 100 guests were led on a tour through the duplication lab, the hardware manufacturing rooms, and the warehouse. Children's educational tapes were being duplicated in one area, while in the warehouse, the staff was packaging and shrink-wrapping the duplicated tapes.

The Next Step

Hyo Jin Nim congratulated the members for the big step they had taken. This is just the beginning, he reminded us. At this point our video duplication facility is only reproducing the programs created by others. Now we should also begin to create our own programs.

"If you really believe that video is the way to send Father's message out to the world, then you have to think about production, not just reproduction," he said. "What you need now is content, internal quality... I am sure you have a production company in mind for the future. That is the next step... I really believe that through this audio / visual medium we can touch many people substantially. It creates a very direct response."

Satan has already created a substantial foundation in this world, he said, but we must insure that the next chapter of history is written by Heavenly Father. "Heavenly Father will win," he said forcefully. "There is no doubt about it. Heavenly Father has to fulfill His purpose of creation. We have to share that burden."

The grand opening was a good time to explain the relationship between New Future Films and Future Productions. New Future Films was begun by True Parents in 1975 as a church department, with only four members. Centering on Mr. Norio Matsuda, a 777 Couple, its purpose was to record Unification Church events on film and video, especially the history of our True Parents. Future Productions, on the other hand, was founded in 1977 as a video-oriented business corporation to raise funds to support the church, centering on Mr. Matsuda's wife Mitsuko, as president. For seven years, Future Productions stayed in this quiet stage of development.

Then in 1984, Father asked that 300,000 sets of videotapes (a total of almost a million tapes) be distributed to ministers throughout America. New Future Film's small film crew was turned upside down. A thousand video cassette recorders (VCRs) were purchased, and Divine Principle tapes in English, French, Japanese, and Spanish began to be turned out. Thus the Unification Church dove into video when much of the world was still unaware of its significance.

While getting the tapes out to the ministers had dispensational significance, also the physical fact of duplicating nearly a million tapes had dispensational significance, and presented many obstacles. If the tapes could not be reproduced within the time period given, they could not be distributed. It was a tremendous responsibility. The problems involved in learning to control 1,000 VCRs in such a short time, with members who had virtually no experience in either video or electronics, seemed almost insurmountable.

By trial and error, the members created a makeshift duplicating system that could route the signal from the source to all the VCRs, turn on all or part of the VCRs simultaneously, and put them into record or rewind. Members worked literally around the clock for almost six months duplicating the tapes. Somehow a million tapes were delivered to all the church centers and distributed.

Three Years of Effort

It was then suggested that Future Productions use the foundation that was established to support the American movement financially. The fruits of their three years of effort since then could be clearly seen at the grand opening of the New Jersey plant.

While many elements have contributed to Future Production's reaching its present level, among the most important, said Mr. Washino, was the internal foundation that was laid. "We have tried to unite strongly," he said, "and to have faith that we could break through any difficulty. Our staff has worked extremely hard. They were willing to work hard at any task."

While competing in the business world, they tried to keep their vision focused on the ideal, he added. "In the outside world, business means competition and trying to defeat one another. But what we have done was not just to compete, but to help others and to try and develop the market together. This is Father's tradition: give and take. We feel this is our responsibility, to restore the business world."

Future Productions is now one of the largest video duplicators on the East Coast, but Hyo Jin Nim reminded them that Father would certainly like to see them be the largest in America -- and develop and produce their own programs. "You can conjure up boundless things," he said. "You are boundless, your mind is boundless... That is the quality of the Creator. You can do anything you want, anything you set out to do."

The History of the Video Providence

In February 1985, Future Productions was one of the largest, if not the largest, video duplication facilities on the East Coast. Most duplication facilities had between 20 to 50 video cassette recorders. Future Productions had a thousand -- a huge duplication capacity, but none of the related services that are normally a part of every company. They had no packaging capability, no sales force, and no marketing strategy.

But Father had a vision for video that few people at the time were able to grasp. "When Father started the Divine Principle video project," said Mr. Ken Washino in his speech at the opening of their new facility, "no one before had attempted such a large distribution of tapes. No one else had created such a large video duplication system."

When the Unification Church began its "video providence," a VCR cost around $1,000 to $1,200 and thus could be afforded by only a very few. How could anyone have imagined that within a few years VCRs would cost only slightly over $200 each and be owned by almost every household?

The Importance of Video

Father must have seen the future clearly, for he quickly understood the importance of video for God's providence. While a TV or radio show can only be broadcast one time, a videotape can be played over and over. Through this medium, it would be possible for people to view the Divine Principle lectures again and again.

However, the team wasn't able to anticipate the direction of the later booming home video market, said Mr. Washino. "If we had realized this market trend then," he said, and if we had had enough marketing experience, we could have made a much larger business foundation quickly."

With no sales team, no marketing experience, and none of the basic services that were demanded by the market, how were they to keep 1,000 VCRs busy? They gradually began to develop a foundation in production, sales, marketing, management, and customer service. They began an advertising campaign and started to promote their company at trade shows.

The spearhead of that growth was the in-house development of an improved video duplication system. One of the staff had used his experience in electrical engineering to sort out the bugs in their existing duplication system. (That also included the bugs in an expensive set-up purchased from the industry's major video duplication system designer.)

While trying to improve the Future Productions system, he developed a unique new system that offered major improvements over what was on the market, at only a fraction of the cost. The staff began marketing it at prestigious trade shows, such as the National Association of Broadcasters and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. In the last two years alone, they have set up over 200 systems, involving 5,000 VCRs. They have set up systems in both North and South America and soon will be setting up one in China.

On this foundation, the company gained a reputation for not only technical expertise but good customer relations.

Video is a young industry. When video began to take off, there were many companies that sprang up overnight to take advantage of the video boom; they made a few million dollars for their owners before folding or going into bankruptcy. In such a milieu, Future Productions stood out.

One of their suppliers told them, "You are the only company in the video industry that pays when you promise."

We're Here to Serve

"We started out as a servant of servants," says Timothy Forster, marketing manager. "We started in a very 'tooth and nail' part of the market, where people cheat and are dishonest. We tried to go to their level and embrace them, but with the right heart... That's where we tested our attitude. We thought, are we going to become like them, or keep our own tradition?"

"Everyone watched us very carefully," recalls Mr. Washino, "because they knew we were Moonies."

But once they had established relationships of trust with their customers, they found that their customers began testifying about them to other companies. "When that began happening,"

Mr. Forster says, "We knew we had established a certain kind of internal victory. Instead of compromising our philosophy or religion, we tried to inspire them that it's better to be sincere, honest, and responsible. It was basically the principle of home church. You make relationships that are long-term. You don't just make a quick dollar and get out of the industry tomorrow."

When they went from just doing duplication to marketing the duplication system hardware, many people warned them that it would never work.

"People would ask us, 'Why are you setting up systems that will upgrade and organize your own video duplication competitors?"' says Mr. Forster. "'You're cutting your own throats.' But we told them, 'No, there's business out there for everyone. We're here to serve.' And in fact our business has been doubling every year."

"We have really given our best effort to gain a reputation with customers by going Father's traditional way," says Mr. Washino. "And we have experienced that when we try our best, even when we have no experience and little confidence, we can accomplish."

Hyo Jin Nim prays with members at Belvedere after Hyun Jin Nin's speech on May 8, 1988.

[Speaking in tears]

Hyun Jin's talk today was very special. This is the first time he has stood here representing Father. I know my brother, and he's not a man who boasts. He sincerely gave every bit of himself today.

Whenever you listen to my brothers and sisters or anyone who is representing True Parents, you have to bring an open heart. I truly thank you for trying your best to unite with our family. My brothers and sisters and I want to totally unite with our True Parents and with you Unification Church members. I'm grateful to Heavenly Father and to my parents for letting us have this foundation to unite with each other.

The world would be a very unhappy place if everything were measured or understood only with our physical senses. We have to live in the ideal way, giving ourselves 100 percent for the sake of the whole. That is the right attitude of the Unification Church member; that is the right attitude of the ideal man and woman.

Offer the Best of Yourself to Heavenly Father

I feel that these days, in order to lead and affect other people, we have to really grow out of being dependent. Young people by nature want to be independent. It is actually this God-given characteristic that drives young people to accomplish great things and ultimately to become an ideal man, because every person has an individual responsibility to become one with Heavenly Father. We have to use our abilities and be creative and offer the best of ourselves to Heavenly Father. Only in this way can Unification Church members find true fulfillment.

Many young people are ruined by pursuing happiness based on power and wealth. But these external things can never give anyone deep inner contentment. The Messiah is not coming here to fulfill your responsibility for you.

Many Christians believe in just receiving Jesus and proclaiming him as their savior, but the only way you can be truly saved is to personally live the word of God. The fact that Father taught you that is the greatest blessing. Until each human being becomes responsible and unites with Heavenly Father, and until Satan fulfills the ideal servant role to Heavenly Father, creation is not finished. We must motivate ourselves and others to bring this result to Heavenly Father. Be grateful for what you can do and what you are.

I'm concerned about you; Father's concerned about you; all our family is concerned about you. As long as you need us, we'll be there for you. That's a promise! Have courage and do your best. You can do better than me. You can be just like Father. You can speak the word of Father more eloquently to the people around you than I can. You can take initiative every day and make progress by yourself by giving something to Heavenly Father.

This is a family, and we have to create a family unity, originating from True Parents and their family, then spreading to include you, and then the whole rest of the world.

Thank you all very much for coming. I'll say a prayer.

Hyo Jin Nim makes a full bow in respect to True Parents before beginning his speech.

Today, let's talk about becoming citizens of tomorrow's world, the ideal world. How many of you are American citizens? Are you proud Americans? Many times Americans have an "American" attitude, and where does that come from? From American concepts. From concepts we mold our attitudes. "Attitude" is substantializing what you believe in. If I am to be a religious man, I must have faith in religion. And if I want to become a preacher, then I have to know about God's will and about the background of Heavenly Father. In this world, many people are proud to be American citizens because America is a symbol of freedom to them. To many those starving people in places like Ethiopia or in the communist bloc countries -- America is a symbol of hope. To many others living in America, America is a sanctuary for their dreams. But we have to really understand and evaluate the circumstances that surround us.

Heavenly Father's ideal world should be based upon the ideal concept and ideology. Upon that, our attitudes and actions will follow. So what is the concept and understanding that all ideal people must have? First of all, everybody has to be united with one thought -- Heavenly Father's thought. God must exist within that world in order for it to become ideal. We cannot create an ideal world all by ourselves because we exist with a spirit and a body, not just a body alone. Your mind and body must come together and unite with the center of your soul, which is our Heavenly Father.

What is love? Can love exist alone? You must have someone to have give and take with, someone else to receive and feel your love. Alone, I cannot feel love. I must have a spouse. Within my family, love can exist because I have my children, my wife, my brothers and sisters, and my parents. Within that family, love can exist. Love exists when I'm living for everyone else, for the sake of the whole.

In order for this ideal attitude to come about, we have to know where the center is. What is my everything? What is my source of life? Everything to me is love.

Love means everything to me. Who is the embodiment of love? Heavenly Father. And who represents Heavenly Father here in this substantial world? True Parents. So our attitude must coincide with that feeling. We must think: "True Parents are everything to me." That is the right attitude within an ideal society, that absolute subject and object relationship. I exist because of True Parents. True Parents represent the whole. For the sake of love I will live for True Parents.

Young People Long to Substantiate Their Ideals

When you look at young people, they are motivated, enthusiastic, outgoing. They like to feel liberated and independent. Adults may say they're rebellious, but many times young people are just rebelling against what they perceive to be wrong. Here you must understand the Principle point of view. Within our physical lifetime, we were to substantiate true love. Through this body, we were to learn about true love, through childhood and adolescence, finally reaching adult age. During that growth period, all young people come to understand what is right or wrong.

When adolescence arrives, you perk up, you want to search for yourself, to find out things on your own; you want to substantiate things. You want to become an ideal person. That is deep within every young man and woman's heart. Young people long to be independent. Why? Because every individual has within him a drive to fulfill his own responsibility, and young people feel this strongly.

In the ideal world, young people learn to live and know about ideal love, ideal things, and ideal concepts. But in this world, ideal examples don't exist. Young people search and search for ideal examples, but because there are none, they have to settle for less, for things that they perceive to be good in the moment. They make decisions spontaneously and build their life upon instantaneous decisions, living in accordance with their irresponsible urges. They develop these kinds of habits, and their physical bodies get molded in the wrong way. They just live day-to-day, carelessly, having give and take with this materialistic, un-ideal world. Unfortunately, this is the reality of America and the rest of the world today.

If only humankind had fulfilled its responsibility and met True Father 40 years ago! But because man failed, all that time was tragically lost. Father could have set a perfect direction. At that time the atmosphere was changing, and young people were idealistic and searching, not already molded by corrupt, illogical, unprincipled concepts.

If Father had had a substantial foundation, he could have set the example and true direction for America's youth. But Satan came along with the banner of "peace." Everything was completely messed up. Everything was peace, love, and flowers -- the hippie lifestyle.

What this Society Promises You

Within this free society, you have your individual freedom and rights, but there is a law you must obey. What is that law? It's called civil obedience. It's a very general law. It means you can do anything you want as long as you don't harm anybody else of get in anybody else's way. It means individualism, right?

Americans live within this definition of freedom. Basically, the freedom America offers is deviation from God, being liberated from God. That's what this America promises you! That's the meaning of liberalism today, being liberated from God. That is the driving force of America. That is what the majority wants, and in a democratic society, the majority rules.

In this pluralistic society, values can shift depending on who is in the majority. Satan likes this system. As long as this kind of shifting atmosphere exists within this physical world, Satan can manipulate it, because there is no absolute center.

How can this be changed? It can only be changed when an absolute center is established. Within Heavenly Father there's no minority and no majority, just absolute value centering on Heavenly Father.

Every man and woman can connect with Heavenly Father. But if Heavenly Father is separated out of you, what do you have? Only the physical shell, only your body. If our relationships are based only upon our bodies, there will be chaos. If a person who looks like Jesus is the only one o. ho can speak the word of God, then how can I trust you? How can I expect you to speak the word of God to me?

Sometimes when I approach people, when there is something I might want to ask, first they'll look at me and evaluate me. I know they're thinking, "Is he going to be pleasant? Is he going to smile at me?" If my face doesn't move, their face gets kind of crumpled up. I can see their eyes moving up and down, trying to check me out. Think about that. What if everybody in this room thought like that and evaluated True Parents like that whenever they saw them? How would you like it if your children evaluated you and scrutinized you like that?

The Only Way of Goodness

Let's say I'm 10 years old and I'm truly inspired by the comic book character "The Hulk." I want to become just like the Hulk or Superman. I look at my father and mother, and they are in no way close to them. They don't look like them, they don't act like them, and they don't sound like them. I'm disappointed, because

I want to become like those characters. What am I supposed to do? Deny my parents because what I perceive to be ideal is something far beyond what exists in them? There is a fundamental conflict here between my perception and the reality. I'm making a very crucial point. Many times we are faced with this kind of situation. Many times we look at True Parents with that false expectation. I hope that none of us has that attitude anymore. You must understand: A subject and object relationship is absolute. Adam and Eve's responsibility was to absolutely obey Heavenly Father. And based on that absolute obedience, they were to have substantially become an ideal man and woman.

When good and evil coexist, that is lawlessness, anarchy. In an ideal world only goodness exists. Goodness does not exist with evil. It is a certain specific way. It is the ideal path, the good path, the path of righteousness. It is not "anything goes" or "anything my heart desires."

All of you have a perception of both good and evil. You grew up in the fallen world, not the ideal world, and you already have a certain perception of good and evil. Isn't that a contradiction? So how can you have a clear, specific, perfect, and absolutely right understanding of good and evil when you are existing in an un-ideal world? The only way of goodness is absolute unity with True Parents. That is absolute goodness. That is the only way.

Recently, I heard on the news that the big American companies are investing in education nowadays. They're pouring money into America's academic institutions because the companies are running out of qualified people. They are finally being driven to the point where they have to live for the sake of others in order to survive themselves. They're being forced to live for the sake of others! So no matter how you may want to create an ideal world humanistically, you have to apply the Principle to make it work. You must live for the sake of others. There's no other way.

The Need for Absolute Values

During World War II, all Americans were mobilized for the war effort. They were united in fighting for goodness because they clearly knew what the evil was. American people have to clearly see the evil first in order to do something about it. They say, "Show me -- where's the bad guy?!" Again, today, this is the time. America is hurting. We need to clearly educate Americans that there is evil in this world today and that they must be mobilized to fight.

Clearly America needs a new direction, and Americans are yearning for it. More and more they are feeling the need for an absolute value system. But they have to have a clear understanding of that value system. They have to have absolute guidance about what is right and wrong. It is painful for me to look at America, because more and more I understand the false value system that is existing at this moment. It is very painful. It's not right.

I want to do something about this situation. Many young people are hurting. When you're young, you need a role model, an ideal example. We must set an ideal example for our children.

We have to be absolute. This is very important. The suffering of young people can be avoided if they're given the right example; if they had been, they would not have become what they are today.

You have the responsibility to become ideal men and women. Children have to grow up in a family surrounded by love. But many of you didn't. And unfortunately many of the blessed children didn't either. Why? Because their fathers and mothers were out there on the front line. They did not have ideal surroundings. This is sad and painful, but it is reality. This reality shouldn't have occurred in the first place; it is not ideal, but in order to obtain the ideal goal, overcoming the effects of the fall, we have to go through hardships. This war is painful, but it is a noble struggle, a noble path.

Many obstacles are standing in our way. This is not an ideal world. We have to fight. That means, we have to love. How long do you want people to suffer, to extend the suffering? You don't want to extend the suffering, and Heavenly Father doesn't want to either.

That's why we must stand up and protect our values. There are many ways to fight for what you want. Satan's way is killing, but our way is love -- true love.

People who are going around with Satan's thoughts and living unprincipled lives can never become ideal persons. In order for Heavenly Father's ideal to be substantiated, we must be responsible. Man has to substantiate his real self in front of God, in this physical life, with this physical body. If he doesn't do that, he can never become an ideal man.

Understand the Essence of Love

If the parents don't fulfill their responsibility, their children will have to suffer for them, because parents and children are the same; they are one. That's Heavenly Father's way. That's Principle, too. Abraham, in the providence of God, failed. So the mission had to be passed down to Isaac and Jacob. The foundation of substance was fulfilled through Jacob. That is oneness. That's why I tell you that if you don't do your responsibility, your children will suffer because they'll have to bear it. Satan knows that. As long as he is in control, the process is just extended, extended, extended. And Heavenly Father's providence is prolonged more and more and more. Satan thrives on this, and that's how he retains dominion.

I know you are suffering. I suffered too, but I came to my senses on my own. Why are you worrying about your children? I'll take care of them. Making an ideal world is not easy, but someone has to do it. That's why we're here. Someone has to start. Father loved me very much, I know. Many times I had false expectations, but that was my fault. I shouldn't have compared him. That was my fault. He loved me and he still loves me. Love can truly conquer all. Begin. Be a true love man, and you will go far beyond your limited capacity. People can change. If I am a true love man, even the worse kind of criminal can change in front of my eyes. There is a Korean saying, "Mountains change in a decade." A person can change in a decade. No matter how stubborn or how solidly evil he is, he can still change. Love conquers all, because love is eternal. Love is not limited. That's why you must understand the essence and value of love. That's why when you look at your parents, when you look at me, when you look at anybody for that matter, don't look with that kind of skepticism or doubt in your eyes. That's not right. I don't do that to my parents.

Do you know why I don't look at Father directly most of the time? Because my love for him cannot be evaluated through my eyes. If I look at him and have selfish thoughts, I close my eyes.

If this is what is deviating me from my position, which is an object position, I don't want to look at him. When you evaluate something, you are being subjective. Do you understand? That is going against the Principle. You are deviating from your position. If you are an object, you cannot look at the subject with that kind of eye. Many people look at me like that. Many times that's why I turn away. That's why I drop my head. That is the only reason. I know clearly what the Principle teaches, and now I realize I have to live it. I don't want to do anything that makes me deviate from my position. That is the reason I drop my head. Do you think an ideal world can come with everybody being subjective?

Love can't be measured in Words

Look at American society. Fathers consider themselves equal to their children. Even to have a normal relationship, the fathers have to explain everything. They try to appeal to their children, justifying everything they do. How miserable. Do you like that kind of lifestyle? I certainly don't. I don't want to have to explain everything I do to the person I love. How complicated that life is. That's miserable. Do you think I like suffering? No. I'm just like you. I don't like to suffer. That's why I want to shun that kind of thinking and attitude. That's not the right example to set for your children. How much more do you want to complicate your life?

Can love be measured in words? Even just looking at that fact, think of how complicated this American lifestyle is. When just little things go wrong, couples squabble. "Oh, honey, please, don't misunderstand me, I wasn't trying to do this, but I was trying to do that! So please understand; don't misunderstand me." You can live like that if you want, but I don't want to live like that.

That's not fun. That's not a joyful, happy world. You have to have order. The Kingdom of Heaven is a society where there is clear order. The Kingdom of Heaven is in the realm of goodness, and within that specific realm, you are to live happily with Heavenly Father through eternity. That's it.

So if you want to evaluate someone, evaluate yourself. You have the ability to do that. The potential is there for you to become an ideal man. I evaluate myself. I ask myself, how do I measure up according to Father? I can see where I am lacking and I deter- mine that tomorrow I will do better. I've learned how I must avoid some things, change some things, and motivate myself more. And I will do that, because I want to become an ideal man.

I want to absolutely unite with True Parents. I think you can do this too, right?

Today is a special day. I've stood here for many weeks now. I've given you everything I've got! If I keep talking I'll say the same thing over and over again! I'm trying to make the Principle relate to your life. It's like making music. There are only a limited number of notes on the scale; every song is just a different mix. But the notes are unchanging, just like the Principle is unchanging.

I've Tried My Best to Give You My Heart

In everything we do we have to give our utmost effort to make a substantial foundation. I'm really happy today. During these Sundays I've been spending with you, I've really grown close to you. And I'm thankful to all of you. I've tried my best to give you my heart and my understanding toward True Parents and the Principle. But my effort doesn't mean anything without your response. I know you are trying to change; you're trying to do everything you can along with me. You're trying to unite centered upon True Parents. I see hope in you, and Father is happy for your efforts.

I'm saying these things not because I'm leaving this podium but because Father has asked me to let my brothers and sisters begin speaking here also. You like that idea, don't you? Try to unite with them as much as you have united with me. You have to encourage them also. As they speak more and more, they'll become better than me. My younger brothers are much more talented than I am!

I calculated that if every one of Father's 12 children each has 10 children, and if that tradition goes on, within 10 generations our family will exceed one billion! You go home and calculate. It's true! It's actually 1.2 billion. That's how everybody can literally become connected to True Parents. It's possible. That's why, in a conclusive sense, we are all children of God. We are! Through Parents we are all to become children of Heavenly Father, and that is reality. Within 10 generations, everybody in this world can connect. It can happen.

So do everything you can to unite with True Parents. Look at True Parents centered upon true love. Try to go beyond your eyes, beyond the physical things. I notice my children as they grow up, and they notice me. When they were little babies they could notice me only through their eyes. As they got older, they noticed me through their ears. But more and more as they grow, they can experience me through their heart. Deeply, without words, they understand my heart, and they want to follow and obey. They are making an effort to truly unite with me. I see that happening and I see hope. That's how we should grow.

True Parents family are all growing up. My brother is going to come and speak next week. I'm truly inspired. By myself I'm already determined, but by seeing you, my determination is increased dramatically. That is the honest truth! The more we unite, the more strength we have. I'm sure all of you feel that way too. Unity is the way to victory.

We must unite with True Parents absolutely. I've stressed that all throughout my talks here at Belvedere, and that's what we have to do; that is the way to become an ideal citizen of the ideal Kingdom of Heaven.

Dr. Bo Hi Pak

Dr. Bo Hi Pak

Remarks from Dr. Bo Hi Pak

Directly after Hyo Jin Nim's speech on May 1, Dr. Bo Hi Pak gave a stirring testimony to the True Family. Below are excerpts from that talk.

I am truly honored this morning to be together with you listening to Hyo Jin Nim's remarkable spiritual message. I have been listening almost like a sponge, soaking up his words. It used to be that if Father weren't here, just a handful of people would gather together for Belvedere service. Now this space is jam-packed. This shows that Hyo Jin Nim's ministry is growing and making a powerful impact.

This morning, tears were trickling down my cheeks, because I see that Hyo Jin Nim has become a personification of the word of God and the word of True Parents. We know that Father doesn't have to worry all week about how to prepare his speech on Sunday; God's word just flows out of his being. Likewise, I am seeing the word of God flowing directly from Hyo Jin Nim in a very clear and practical way, creating incredible oneness between himself and all of you. The unity generated here is truly the hope of the world.

Today Hyo Jin Nim prayed beautifully in the Korean language, and in his speech in English he was able to create a deep intimacy with you, because he also completely understands Western culture and spirit. That's why his ministry is booming. After witnessing such power, humor and beautiful expression, I felt this morning that Bob Hope and Johnny Carson were like peanuts in comparison! They have no message, but Hyo Jin Nim's message comes directly from True Parents' heart.

The Torch is Being Passed

On this day in 1954, the Unification Church was formally organized during a most difficult time. Now this year of 1988 is the time when one generation is passing the torch to another. On this anniversary of our church, we can see the new generation of True Parents beginning to lead us in the same eternal tradition of heart originated by our True Parents. When Father and Mother heard in Korea about Hyo Jin Nim's ministry, they told me, smiling, "We don't have to go back to the United States anymore!" Of course it doesn't mean they won't come back; it means they feel great joy and satisfaction because their eldest son's ministry is taking off in such a brilliant way--at the CARP conventions, here at Belvedere, and at the major celebrations in New York. You can imagine that there is no greater joy for our True Parents than this.

I myself feel very inspired, knowing that our future is secure. Hyo Jin Nim will evangelize a new generation of leadership and a new breed of members in the Unification Church. Hyo Jin Nim's message, given with great depth and humor, with tears and laughter, and most important of all, with the heart of our True Parents and the heart of God, will make us all into new people. As you listen more and more to Hyo Jin Nim and support him and unite with him,

I'm sure you will all grow quickly. Not only Hyo Jin Nim, but all of the True Family are growing up in this same wonderful tradition.

When Shin Won Nim was born to Hyun Jin Nim and Jun Sook Nim, True Parents were in America, so Kook Jin Nim led the celebration in Korea. He asked me to translate for him from English to Korean, and I was amazed at his perception, his depth, and the purity of his joy.

This day is an incredible combination: It's the first of May, a Sunday, the anniversary of HSA-UWC, and also True Parents 28th Holy Wedding Anniversary. This is not a coincidence; this is a providential day. The month of May symbolizes the blossoming of flowers and leaves, nature coming alive. Just as Hyo Jin Nim stated that he will absolutely commit himself, let that be our determination too. When we work hard for our True Parents, there's no room for regret! Today I'm absolutely full of energy and vitality as well as the spirit of sacrifice. I don't care what kind of task awaits me; whatever my mission, this soldier will march! I know that you share with me that kind of determination today.

A Year for Miracles

In Korea, Father and Mother are totally committed to bringing about the unification of the Fatherland as a symbol of the unification of the world. It is almost like the meeting of Jacob and Esau. And only with Father's guidance and leadership will that happen. Many Korean people now realize that without Rev. Moon, Korea would not have any direction.

I tell you, 1988 is going to be the greatest year, and some great miracles will happen. This year the True Family has had one joy after another. First of all, Shin Gil Nim, the first son of the eldest son of our True Parents, was born not long ago. Now four generations are established, consisting of Heavenly Father, True Parents, True Parents' son and daughter-in-law, and True Parents' grandson -- thus completing the formation, growth, and perfection stages of True Parents' family. This is why Shin Gil Nim's birth is so significant in the history of our church. It was the most joyful event in heaven and on earth, and we celebrated Shin Gil Nim's birth with virtually the entire population of Korea. Father told all the church centers to make big rice cakes and distribute pieces of them throughout all the villages and towns in the country.

Then, about 40 days later, Shin Won Nim was born, the first son of Hyun Jin Nim and Jun Sook Nim. God has an amazing computer! He programmed things in such a way that the eldest son gave birth to a son first, and then the second son gave birth to a son, so that everything is in perfect order. And only a few days ago, Ye Jin Nim and Jin Whi Nim gave birth to a daughter, Shin Hwa Nim. They already have two sons, and a daughter is just what they needed. Such great joy coming in True Parents' family in this prosperous year of 1988 means that an internal foundation is being laid for the victorious future of the True Family, like a fortress with no possibility for Satan to even put his finger on it. We know that without an internal foundation, no external foundation can be won.

As the True Parents' family prospers, the communist world will decline. Father declared a long time ago that the end of communism was near. The Soviets are desperate now, proclaiming glasnost, or openness, and perestroika, or restructuring. What are they restructuring? They are throwing communism away -- there's no other way of restructuring! The Soviet regular army and air force were miserably defeated by the Afghan freedom fighters. They thought Afghanistan was going to be a piece of cake, that they would be finished conquering the country within a month. But in a few years, the Islamic faith, which is centered upon God, proved to be more powerful than the ideology of dialectical materialism. The Soviet army with all its weapons was defeated by mere guerrillas empowered by faith in God. The era for Godism has truly arrived!

Nothing is Impossible

Now in Korea all of us are working like crazy. But do I look tired? Not at all. This is a miracle. Someone met me at the airport and said, "Dr. Pak, I thought you'd look like a 70-year old man. But you look so young!" As Father says, overcoming trials and tribulations makes you feel young and vibrant. When people who met me 10, 20, or 30 years ago tell me I look the same or even younger today, I tell them the reason why is very simple -- I have no time to get old! I have no time to die! The more Father asks me to do, the more exuberant I feel every day. When you face God and True Parents, somehow those impossible missions always get accomplished.

Father and Mother will definitely be back in America soon, but in the meantime, we cannot just sit idly, waiting for their return. Let's get down to work; let's prepare to bring the victory; let's unite with the True Family, especially Hyo Jin Nim, and let's make Father proud. Raise your hands if you will do that! Thank you and God bless you.

Hyo Jin Nim and Nan Sook Nim then came on stage, cut the cake, and received flowers as representatives of True Parents. Other members of True Family who were present came up on the stage with them. Led by Dr. Pak, everyone sang "Happy Anniversary True Parents," Dr. Pak led a cheer of four Manseis, for Father, Mother, the True Parents, and the True Family.

My real brother Hyo Jin Nim on Parents' Day

Hyo Jin Nim prays after his talk on Parents' Day, April 16, 1988.

On Parents' Day, April 16, 1988, brothers and sisters in the Grand Ballroom had an unexpected and unforgettable encounter with Hyo Jin Nim's courageous, sacrificial heart. Instead of a traditional sermon, Hyo Jin Nim related many deep, personal experiences from his past. In a low voice filled with emotion, he conveyed to the members what he had gone through in his youth. He explained that in desperation to gain friends and to be accepted by his American schoolmates, who persecuted him for who he was, he faced great dilemmas in practicing the very strict Principle way of life of his parents. The painful road finally leading to his ultimate resolve to live True Parents lifestyle had been long.

At times with deep sighs or with tears streaming down his face, he appealed to us to understand that he was sharing this because he wanted to take full responsibility himself, realizing that Father had given him every opportunity to fulfill that responsibility but could not do it for him. "Father always loved me," he said, "but I didn't have enough of a foundation of substance to understand the essence of his heart." He said it was actually when he saw the innocent beauty of his own children that he fully understood the meaning and value of absolutely going the way of the Principle. To make up for his mistakes, he said, he is now totally determined to fight against Satan in this fallen world and to follow Father anywhere at the cost of his life, through whatever suffering path he has to go, especially so that his younger brothers and sisters and the blessed children won't have to go through what he went through.

Brothers and sisters listen to their elder brother speak from his heart.

Brothers and sisters listen to their elder brother speak from his heart.

The sheer guts it took to share his past and his honest feelings with us wrenched open the rusty gates of my heart and forced me to examine my own degree of repentance and commitment to True Parents' way. In shock I recognized my almost complete lack of understanding of the silent suffering of the True Children on so many levels. Somehow I had thought it was rather automatic that the True Children would follow True Parents. Because each word Hyo Jin Nim spoke was so sincere, I felt a bond of indescribable trust growing between him and myself; I'm sure all the brothers and sisters in the room did too. I was also struck by the deeply forgiving heart of True Parents. I ached to let Hyo Jin Nim know the love and gratitude I felt at that moment for every one of the True Family.

One thing Hyo Jin Nim said at the end was, "I just gave you everything... I did it because love has no boundaries." What an amazing statement! The True Children are living every minute for the sake of unity. We cannot yet fathom everything they are really longing to share with us or do for us.

Incredibly, just a few nights before, I had had a vivid dream about Hyo Jin Nim. In the dream he and I were at a summer camp. Hyo Jin Nim wore blue jeans and the two of us were buddies. In an idyllic setting of cabins and woods and campfires, we joked around with each other and cooked dinner over the open fire and laughed and talked about everything. It didn't seem unusual at all that I was his pal and trusted friend. When I woke up I knew that, although I might never have that experience in real life, we had already shared that time together, and the bond we had forged could never be taken away.

Then on Parents' Day itself I felt Hyo Jin Nim was letting me know that, no stranger to the thorny path himself, he would never keep his heart from me but hold firmly to his pledge of eternal commitment -- that he was my real brother.

We Truly Have to Understand Our Identity

Hyo Jin Nim speaks on True Parents' Birthday.

Hyo Jin Nim speaks on True Parents' Birthday.

Today is True Parents' Birthday. Today is the day we truly have to understand our identity--who we are and what position we are in.

Heavenly Father's ideal world is based upon ideal man and woman coming together in absolute unity with Heavenly Father. Through that four position foundation, ideal sons and daughters are born. That is why True Parents are the most important thing to Heavenly Father.

The human race has suffered misfortune and separation and segregation, becoming orphans because Adam and Eve failed to unite with Heavenly Father and lost the True Parents' position. Through True Parents, the lineage of fallen man can be cleansed, and we can be grafted into the true olive tree and become one with Heavenly Father. We truly have to understand that we, and the rest of the world for that matter, are in the children's position to True Parents.

Not Just Good Intentions

God gave us responsibility because that is the only way to become a child of God. You don't become a child of God automatically, through instinct or habit) You have to make effort to create yourselves by knowing exactly what you want and absolutely committing yourself to following Heavenly Father's will. In this way, you can grow to become ideal men and women and inherit the full magnitude of Heavenly Father's love. As Heavenly Father substantialized everything in this entire physical world from His own true image, so we must actively choose to substantialize the ideal image of God in ourselves. Children are an extension of their parents. To be a child of God, we must understand the essence and ways of our original Parent.

When you reach perfection, Heavenly Father can reciprocate His ideal love eternally, because you can multiply. There is no way to build an ideal Kingdom without true families. In America, so many families are broken. Children have many mothers and fathers. They go from one parent to another; wandering all their lives. Without True Parents, the whole human race is wandering. Almost everybody has good intentions, but the ideal cannot be made real just with good intentions. You must actually take responsibility to become Heavenly Father's children and reciprocate His love. You cannot just want it--you must substantialize it!

In order to restore fallen nature, we must understand what it is. The Bible says that Heavenly Father created the universe with the help of angels. Heavenly Father loved Lucifer unchangingly from the time he was created, with the full love of a master for a servant. But Heavenly Father's ideal could-not be completely fulfilled in a master/servant relationship; He could only fulfill His ideal through a parental relationship with ideal children. As a servant, in order to assist his master, Lucifer had to know the plan of the master; therefore, he knew that according to the Principle, he had the responsibility to absolutely serve and assist Heavenly Father and do His will. He had responsibility as well as Adam and Eve.

But after Heavenly Father created Adam and Eve, Lucifer saw that Heavenly Father loved His children in a different way than He loved him. He felt deprived and jealous--that is a fallen nature. But Heavenly Father actually loved Lucifer with the same love both before and after the creation of Adam and Eve. Thus it was Lucifer who betrayed that love relationship, not Heavenly Father.

What Is Good and Evil?

If Adam and Eve had absolutely united with Heavenly Father and established the ideal four position foundation, then forever afterwards good would have always subjugated evil. What is good and evil? Simply put, a person who lives for himself is an evil person, and a person who lives for the whole is a good person. Heavenly Father represents the whole, because He is the creator of everything. To reciprocate ideal love with Heavenly Father, you must be living for His sake and for the sake of the whole. An ideal man is one who always subjugates his individual purpose, need, or want for the sake of pursuing the purpose of God. We must understand clearly that Heavenly Father intended this in the beginning.

You are all individuals. Nobody looks the same, unless you had plastic surgery! All of you have your own distinctive characteristics and idiosyncrasies that are God-given. You started with that, but because of the fall, you were unfortunately born upon a foundation of good and evil; therefore, you must take responsibility to choose to become an ideal man or woman of God and subjugate your individual desires and live for the purpose of the whole. Satan is part of the whole, but he separated himself from Heavenly Father. Therefore, individuality, separation, segregation--all are evil. An "evil" man is one who lives for his own sake, not caring about anything else. "As long as I'm rich, I'm happy. As long as I have power, I'm happy. I don't care what happens to all the women I will touch along my path; as long as I'm satisfied, I'm happy." What point am I trying to make? Don't think of evil as only something extreme like crime or cruelty. Evil is anything that leads in a direction away from the benefit of Heavenly Father and the whole.

How can Satan be stopped in his tracks? We have to restore Cain and Abel's situation. In order to restore fallen Adam and Eve, who were in the True Parents' position, Cain and Abel were very important. Adam and Eve had already fallen, so Heavenly Father couldn't work through them, because the True Parents have to be in an absolute position, never deviating from expressing the will of God. If they themselves had restored their own fallen act, then that fallen act would have remained as part of the process of reaching the ideal position. That is why restoration had to be carried out through the separation of Cain and Abel.

Restoring Cain

Cain and Abel are both from the fallen seed, but we must understand the significance of their positions. Lucifer tempted Eve to fornicate spiritually with him by promising her everything in the universe, telling her that her eyes would be opened. Tragically, his promise came true, because through her fallen act with Lucifer, Eve realized that this act should have taken place in a love relationship with Adam. Driven by her guilt after committing this unprincipled act with Lucifer, as well as by her desire to go back to the original ideal, she tempted Adam. Because her second act was motivated by a desire to return to her proper position, Eve's second son Abel could come to represent Heavenly Father's side.

Heavenly Father asked Cain and Abel both to make offerings. Abel's offering was received and Cain's was rejected. Why? Heavenly Father did not hate Cain, but he hated what Cain represented, which was Satan. The offering was significant because if Cain had been obedient to Abel and absolutely united with him, he would have separated from Satan, and they would have created a substantial horizontal base for Heavenly Father's providence of restoration. Cain, in the elder son's position, should have been the subject to his younger brother. But this was not an ideal situation, because the fall had occurred. In order to change the false order that Lucifer created by becoming their subject, the elder son had to be obedient to the younger son and receive Heavenly Father's love through Abel. But that did not happen. Still today, all of you, every man and woman in this room, must fulfill this foundation of substance by restoring Cain's fallen act and becoming men and women who can receive Heavenly Father's love.

Because of the failure of Adam's family, God called Noah. Centering on Noah, Heavenly Father wanted to recreate the Garden of Eden. Noah's family was to absolutely unite with him, substantialize the four position foundation, and make a foundation of faith and substance so that the Messiah could come in Noah's family. But Heavenly Father's plan was destroyed when Ham failed to unite absolutely with his father and felt shame in his father's naked body. An ideal man absolutely united with God has no reason to feel shame or guilt. In order to separate from Satan and create the external, substantial base here on earth to spread the seed of Heavenly Father, there must be an absolute connection between parents and children centered on God.

Tragic Reality of History

If that crucial family unity had been realized at Noah's time, the providence of restoration wouldn't have been delayed until the time of Abraham and Jacob. Although Jacob fulfilled the foundation of substance on the family level, Satan's foundation had already increased to the national level and would have overwhelmed that seed of goodness unless there was a corresponding foundation for goodness on a national level as well.

The national foundation was established by Jacob and the nation of Israel, to prepare for the coming of Jesus. John the Baptist, who was respected by all the people of his time and who received many revelations about Jesus Christ, was supposed to obey Jesus and absolutely unite with him. Jesus should not have had to go such a suffering course. In the process of trying to substantialize a foundation of faith and substance all by himself so the world could receive the Messiah, he died. Even when Jesus was on the cross, if one of his 12 disciples had been willing to die for him, the crucifixion wouldn't have been necessary. The Roman governor was even willing to free him. But nobody stood up for Jesus; only the thief, dying on the cross, united with him. Because of man's failure and irresponsibility, Heavenly Father's preparation was shattered. Over and over again, this has been the reality in human history.

Finally, today, we are celebrating True Parents' Birthday. Do you know how much suffering is behind the making of this day? All of you know that the True Parents' course was never easy. True Parents had to establish their own position by making a substantial foundation of absolute true love and unity with Heavenly Father here on this earth. The foundation to receive the Messiah had to be prepared all over again in Korea.

Back in the 1940s, all of the major religions of the world had reached their culmination in Korea, but the most dominant was Christianity. The leaders of many Christian movements with mass followings had received revelations about the Messiah coming in their time. Many of them even received specific instructions, such as, "You must go and find him; he's in such-and-such a place." If existing Christianity at that time had united with True Parents on the foundation that Heavenly Father prepared, Father could have united Korea and then gone on to the world level. But again, that possibility was shattered because of man's irresponsibility. That is why Father has had to indemnify everything and make a new foundation all by himself.

The Blessing

Most of you are blessed. The Blessing is very significant because it is Father's true accomplishment. He has created the horizontal foundation for us to win this world back to Heavenly Father. The 36 Blessed Couples symbolize all the ancestor s of the human race: Adam's family, Noah's family, Abraham's family. Based on the 36 Couples, absolute unity must come about to restore all the failures in human history. Two times 36 is 72. The 72 Blessed Couples signify the restoration of Cain and Abel. The number 120 represents the ideal nation. There were 120 disciples who gathered in the upper room to receive the Pentecost when the spirit of Jesus and the Holy Spirit came down. These 120 disciples prepared the spiritual foundation to reach to the societal, national, and global level. The 124 Blessed Couples represent 120 nations. Why is there an additional 4? Everything in all four directions--north, south, east, and west--should belong to Heavenly Father. Based upon the foundation of 124 nations, Heavenly Father can realize His ideal Kingdom.

After the 124 Blessed Couples, we have 430, and then 777. The number 430 is a liberation number; it comes from the four position foundation and the three stages of growth. It was 430 years before Moses liberated the Israelite people from Pharaoh. The 430 Blessed Couples signify the liberation ï 4 all people from the barriers of culture, race, and tradition through the establishment of one absolute tradition. Then based upon that liberation, there must be a substantial base for the whole human race to come together to unite centered on True Parents. That's 777. Number 7 is the perfection number.

Then came the 1800, the 2,000, and the 6,000 Couple Blessings. The number 1800 is a number of absolute victory and indemnity to cut off Satan. Three times 6 is 18, and three 6's or "666" is the number that represents Satan's perfection, so we have to substantialize a foundation to restore that. Father thinks of everything, right? How many people are here from the 2,000 and 6,000 Couple Blessings? Father says you are supposed to be tribal messiahs, tribal True Parents.

Think about it. There are 5 billion people in the world. Let's add up all the blessed couples to a nice, round number of 10,000. If you divide 10,000 into 5 billion, you get 500,000. Each blessed couple should take care of 500,000 people. Can you do that? In New York City, Mayor Koch has to take care of about 10 million people. You feel at least as responsible as Mayor Koch does, right? Some of you can take more responsibility, and maybe some can only handle 100,000. Realistically, you must make this world into an ideal family. How are you going to do it? You must absolutely unite with True Parents. Only upon True Parents' foundation is it realistically possible. All of you are the elders to the human race. We must provide an absolute, substantial connection to True Parents for the world.

Be Strong and Fearless

If man had fulfilled his responsibility, Father could have substantialized a foundation upon the Korean nation. He wouldn't have had to gather us. That is why we are here. I guess, in a very dark sense, you are lucky guys! We truly have to be grateful, because before this age no man or woman ever lived who could utter the words "True Parents." If it wasn't for True Parents, there would be no Principle, no clear understanding of Heavenly Father's dispensation. Now we can analyze and criticize Satan's ways. The only way Satan will yield is under the Principle. It is the greatest discovery in human history to find ï out specifically what the fall is and how we can be restored through indemnity. Don't ever deny that.

Father said we have to be strong and fearless because we are at war. Satan has put up so many barriers against the realization of Heavenly Father's will. Satan knows that he himself has to pay indemnity in order to go back to his ideal position. Many of you have sinned; you know how hard it is to confess your sin and confront your guilt. Think about the magnitude of Satan's sins and the suffering that he has caused Heavenly Father. It is overwhelming! Heavenly Father wants to lessen the burden that the human race is carrying, but Satan is kicking you onto the suffering path. He knows the significance of Principle numbers and he is constantly looking for a chance to prolong your suffering and accuse Heavenly Father for failing to be an absolute God of love. How can we defeat him?

Let's say there is a bully on the block who is making everyone suffer by terrorizing them. Everybody is frightened of him because he's strong and he can physically hurt them. And nobody wants to get hurt by confronting him; they want to protect their pretty face. They want to live in health and be able to walk with two feet. It would be embarrassing to have a black eye or a broken nose! But if somebody on that block decides, "I'm not afraid of a black eye; I'm not afraid of getting my leg broken; I'm not even afraid of dying," then that bully can't scare the person away from standing up to him and even defeating him. Such a person has a chance to restore that bully's attitude and free the unhappy children in that neighborhood.

This is why Father stresses that we must not be afraid and that we go the suffering path with great gratitude, because this is the way to beat Satan, who wants us to suffer. Down deep inside your minds and hearts, all of you want the ideal Kingdom to come. But we have to break down Satan's external barriers and substantialize the ideal. Can we do it with prayer alone? No! Upon the foundation of prayer we must do something, isn't that right?

Results Will Come

I know and you know that doing something substantial is not easy, but the reward is great. Even when you fulfill something very small, it gives you joy, right? Though the process might have been hard, the result gives you joy. What kind of joy do you think you'll receive when you live your life based on Heavenly Father's ideal?!

You know that if you make effort and give, the results will come. Why do you lack results? Because your physical body is limited. For me and for all of us, it's very hard to live our lives absolutely by the Principle. My body is limited. It's hard for me before a speech; honestly, the night before I have to give a speech, I can't sleep. No matter how many times I do it, I get the same feeling all over again of just choking all night long. It's like a life-and-death matter because I know I have to represent Father; I cannot just give my own words. However, because of Father's preparation for us and the Principle, right now we are watching the world change, right in front of our eyes. Tom [Ward], don't you feel happy when you go out there and work? Where is Bill [Lay]? Aren't you happy? Even as you work, the world is actually changing.

When you read the Principle, it just tears you up inside. Your mind and heart know it is undeniable; that's why you know you have to follow it all the way. Man is infatuated by science. Many intellectuals think science is their god. They accept it as absolute truth because it is based upon physical principles and facts. Such men who only perceive truth according to their five physical senses are living in an external shell and don't know the real existence of God. But when those stubborn men are exposed to the Principle, they will change because their own original mind and Shim Jung connects with the original ideal. This proves that the Principle must be true. Because of the research of people like Tom and Bill, we can match the external standard of scientists, scholars, and intellectuals, and just like that, their false ideas will crumble and fall.

Everyone has a physical limit, but I know you are capable of going over any limitation or barrier. Everyone's original mind can be awakened. I asked CARP three months ago to make at least 12 bands. None of the guys in my band ever touched an instrument before in their lives, but they can play pretty good now, don't you think so? Everybody can meet the absolute standard and overcome Satan. So are you going to do it?

Today is True Parents' Birthday. The only way we can celebrate this day with eternal joy is for you and me to come together, absolutely centered upon True Parents. Without this unity, the celebration is only a moment within time and space-not eternal. The significance of having True Parents at this time is to set an ideal standard that future generations can look back to. So your standard must be ideal--live up to it!

We will celebrate this day with absolute conviction and vigor and determination to bring more victories and to substantialize true love and the Principle in our lives. And we will absolutely unite with True Parents. There is only one God. All of you are children of God. Let's make that a reality. Shall we? Those of you who commit yourself totally and absolutely, raise your hands. Thank you very much.
