How are you today? How is everybody doing? It is well known to us that people make mistakes. Throughout our lives we sweat and make great effort to better our standard of living and to achieve happiness. But I am disheartened to say that we, the men and women of today's society, often have to confront our selfishness and question our integrity. However, just confronting our self-centered motivation and questioning our fluctuating integrity isn't enough. We should go out of our way to admit our mistakes and bring together our heart and mind to resolve them.

A victory salute from Hyo Jin Nim marks the success of the CARP Convention in Berlin.

A victory salute from Hyo Jin Nim marks the success of the CARP Convention in Berlin.

This is a Mistake!

Now we are standing here at the Berlin Wall -- grieving, because we all know this is a mistake. This is not a sign of peace or a way of life of civilized human beings. The Wall is a true symbol of communism; it should never have happened in the first place. But what is done is done. So we CARP members would like to challenge

Mr. Gorbachev to be the righteous and responsible man he claims to be. Come on, Mr. Gorbachev, let's do away with this unrighteous and inhumane wall of injustice! Show your sincerity to the world for once, please! Put aside your arbitrary and tactical proposals of nuclear disarmament and be sincere about your claim of peace and human rights. Be sincere about the welfare of the world and be truthful to your words. I know that you know that we CARP members are not fools. Under the communist banner of "truth',' "human rights; and "peace," 150 million people have died since the Bolshevik Revolution.

Many of you already know that the theory of communism is based on the 19th-century view of the universe. The cosmos was seen at that time as being made of solid particles that could not be divided into smaller units. Based on this concept, communism's fundamental philosophy says that the cosmos is essentially composed of material. Today, however, atomic physics has revealed clearly that matter is actually intangible energy and that the two are interchangeable. Scientists today say that the emergence of the universe was not an accident -- it resulted from the law of causality, implemented by a primary cause, whom we call God.

God is a living God. Inside of God dwells intelligence, emotion, truth, heart, and, most importantly, the essence of life -- which is true love. We must unite around that essence. The parental love of God is a vertical love, always flowing down. The horizontal love is our responsibility. We change, but God and God's parental love never change. This is very important here. In order for us to unite

East and West, we must unite within our parents; we must unite with our God. God is a living God; inside God dwells the heartistic human essence -- true love -- that is so important to us and to the rest of the world. Only through that can we unite, and only through that can the world come together. Only through that can this wall be broken down. Through that, a victory can come for Heavenly Father.

When I was coming down here, I saw a sign that said, "To learn from the Soviet Union means to learn victory." What does that mean? Winning through communism? Winning what? Suffering? Pain and lies? Is that winning? Communism is not true; it is not even based on fact. It is an outdated philosophy. It is a mistake!

How can anybody believe in a mistake and still live a faithful and true life? Everybody here in West Berlin knows it's a lie. How can they stand still?

We Are Here for God

I am a Korean, an Oriental. Look at everybody here: There are Americans, Japanese, people from all around the world, We were not born in Germany, but we are standing here on this ground at the Berlin Wall. Why? We are here for God. God goes beyond conflict, beyond walls, beyond tradition and heritage. That's why we are standing here; that's why I am telling you these things. My words might be insignificant, but the truth of God will live on. The flesh will die and be destroyed, but the spirit of God will live forever! Only God's love, true love, will prevail! Please, let's join together and break down this wall with love. True love can go over anything. It can overcome any barrier! Let's come together and pray for all the people who are suffering in the communist nations. Let us pray and live up to the words we speak. That's the difference between communism and the Unification Church: We truly mean to bring about a peaceful world. We want to bring this world to God. Not by threats, not by power, not by materialism, but only by the truth of God, only by the love of God. If you want to challenge us, just go ahead! Make my day!

Let's go to the Berlin Wall and pray for Heavenly Father. We will bring victory. We will bring communism under God! Inside God's heart there is even room for communism. Inside of God there is even room for Mr. Gorbachev! Inside of God there is even room for people who are accusing us. Yes, inside His heart there is room for you! It is not too late. Come on, let's go to the wall and pray!

The Fourth CARP Convention of World Students
Claus Dubisz
August 2-8, 1987
Berlin, Germany

In spite of great opposition, the Fourth World CARP Convention actually took place as planned -- in Berlin! Over 3,000 people turned up for the Main Convention at the world-famous International Congress Center. By far the most exciting event was the demonstration and rally at the Berlin Wall -- the 26-mile fortress of concrete and barbed wire separating East and West Berlin. World CARP President Hyo Jin Moon declared that only through the power of God could the Wall crumble. That power was truly demonstrated by Hyo Jin Nim and the hundreds of international CARP members who attended the Convention, each one determined to bring a victory in Berlin.

German CARP is very international in character, but with only 130 fully active members, German CARP is much smaller than the Korean, Japanese, and American CARP movements. Nevertheless, a full-scale Convention was planned to match the three previous ones in Seoul, Tokyo, and New York. One advantage we had was the expert leadership of Mr. Kwang Kee Sa, European CARP leader, who had organized the first Convention in Seoul.

In the beginning, plans for the Convention went well. Contracts for the Philharmonic Concert Hall, the sports arena for the Han Ma Dang games, hotels for the Symposium and the banquets, and the International Congress Center for the Opening Ceremony were easily obtained.

In order to firmly imprint the Berlin Convention in the consciousness of all German students, a big mobilization campaign was organized. A large rally team visited campuses all over West Germany, giving speeches, performing music, and staging Wonhwa-do demonstrations and information evenings.

Fighting for Every Step

Not surprisingly, the strongest opposition -- spiritually and physically -- was encountered in Berlin, where our mobilization efforts were the most concentrated. Selling tickets for the Main Convention in the Philharmonic Concert Hall was not easy! In the beginning we could sell only 10 to 20 a day -- but our goal was at least 100 a day. For one week we could not overcome this invisible barrier. Then suddenly 40 to 50 became the average result. The breakthrough finally came on July 7, after Mr. Sa had finished a seven-day fast: We sold exactly 100 tickets that day! From then on our confidence grew, and more than 100 tickets were sold every day. But meanwhile Satan had already attacked on another level.

On July 1, due to heavy pressure from politicians and threats from radical leftists, the Philharmonic Concert Hall canceled our contract. They argued that we didn't say we were "the dangerous Moon cult' One day later the political parties made a unanimous decision not to allow CARP the use of any hall in the city. The slogan "Stop the CARP Convention" was shouted from all directions: from the political left, the political right, and from many Christians ("cult experts" and Christian student groups). The media multiplied the horror stories, and soon it became common to label CARP a "fascist" and "radical right" organization.

However, support for us gradually started growing. Professors, theologians, and politicians from all over the world protested against the persecution of a religious minority and the violation of our fundamental democratic rights of free speech and free assembly.

And then, a week and a half before the Opening Ceremony, the Congress Center, completely unexpectedly, canceled their contract with us! Two days later the sports arena also canceled due to heavy pressure from the Senate.

This was a real shock. Would the CARP Convention have to take place under the blue sky? If so, how could Hyo Jin Nim's life be protected? Under guidance from Heung Jin Nim, we made strong conditions of prayer and fasting in order to gain the assistance of spirit world in what had become a severe battle.

In the evening news, the deputy mayor of West Berlin accused CARP of being a "criminal organization." But the next day she had to retract that statement under pressure from our lawyer. However, we felt "enough is enough." Leaflets with that title were distributed all over. We were desperate and angry, but determined that if we didn't get any place to meet we would march through the streets.

On July 24 leftists tried to organize a big demonstration against the CARP Convention. Though they advertised for more than two weeks, only 450 sympathizers came. The Berlin police immediately arrested 147 demonstrators, because they had pulled masks over their faces, which is against the law there.

On July 27, 150 of our members demonstrated in front of the city hall, demanding our democratic rights. Mr. Sa challenged the deputy mayor to a public debate. We also held a rally in front of the house of the leading "cult expert," a Protestant pastor who had poisoned the atmosphere of the city with false rumors.

Our lawyer Wolfgang Busch is an expert on the rights of minority groups. He quickly set to work on reversing the cancelation of contracts, which he saw as clearly unconstitutional. He worked day and night, and then on July 28, in a court victory, we won back the sports arena! That night Mr. Sa called Father, who said, "You must fight until the end. Then God can help!" All brothers and sisters prayed hard that night, and at 11 o'clock the next morning we learned that the Congress Center accepted the clear court decision that the Main Convention could be held there as planned!

Opening Ceremony

Finally on August 2, 1987, the Fourth World CARP Convention opened with a victorious ceremony at the International Congress Center. From the beginning, this Convention was different from the first three: Even at the Opening Ceremony over 40 news reporters swarmed to follow the by now highly controversial proceedings, while over 300 demonstrators gathered outside. The journalists stared with surprise as representatives from 80 nations rose from their seats to be recognized amid rapturous applause.

In a clear and powerful speech, Dieter Schmidt, the president of German CARP, explained the significance of the Convention being held in Berlin and the importance of learning from history in order to preserve our democratic heritage. This speech opened the way for European CARP president Kwang Kee Sa to explain the providential meaning of the CARP Convention [see p. 181. Parts of this speech and the opening prayer were broadcast that evening on national TV. The "Battle of Berlin" and the "March to Moscow" were starting to become household phrases.

Rev. Bong Tae Kim gave an address that appealed strongly to the conscience of German youth. Then Peter May, general secretary of the CARP Convention, told the astonishing chronicle of the preparations for the Convention. A slide show set to music gave a moving story of German CARP's history right up to the present day, and a wide variety of musical presentations lent an exciting touch to the whole event. A feeling of victory was already in the air.

After the victory of the Opening Ceremony, left-wing radicals became increasingly frustrated. They had rejoiced over their "victory" after all our contracts had been canceled, but now they realized that they were the losers. In addition to heckling and shouting abuse at almost every event, they threw paint and wrote graffiti at the sports arena and threw stink- bombs during the Symposium, the Han Ma Dang games, and the Main Convention, and at the hotels where we were staying. They slashed the tires of more than 20 of our vehicles and set fire to a bus and a car. Brothers and sisters had to always travel in groups, and at all events there was heavy police protection.

The Symposium

The second main event, the International Student Symposium, could not be held in the hotel originally planned, but in a modest hall in the heart of Kreuzberg, the center of radical activity in Berlin. The moderator of the Symposium praised the participants for their courage in showing an uncompromising commitment to truth and principles. Approximately 900 people attended the plenary sessions. Professor Konrad Low of the University of Munich clearly described how totalitarian states, not democratic ones, cause imperialistic war, and he appealed for unity in the fight against totalitarianism. The three award- winning essays in our essay competition were then read in short form by their authors.

In the afternoon, students participated in one of four committees -- on Berlin, AIDS, Third World projects, and the political situation in South Africa and Nicaragua. Despite some sudden cancelations from professors due to bad publicity or political pressure, most speakers did participate and gave exciting speeches.

The next day were the sports preliminaries (which had to be held in a park). A "Rockout" was held in the evening, with music from the German CARP band Blue Tuna, the American CARP band New Vision, and the specially-formed Convention band Bridge, composed of European CARP and Unification Church musicians.

The Han Ma Dang Games brought many surprises. Originally planned for two days, they had to be reduced to one, which caused organizational havoc. However, the day turned out to be a thrilling one. Most inspiring and surprising was that, despite the dangerous atmosphere, Hyo Jin Nim came straight to the sports arena after his arrival in Berlin. He didn't use his prepared speech but spoke in tears to the crowd. He expressed his sympathy for this divided city and connected Berlin's hope for unification with Father's work to unite Korea. He encouraged all the sports participants to challenge their physical limitations "for the sake of the whole human race

We tried to substantialize his words as we pushed our physical bodies to their limits with a strong spirit. The German CARP teams' great hope was to win the soccer match, and they did! In many events, the sports standard of World CARP had greatly improved. The U.S.A. team was the overall winner for the second year in a row. At the end of the day, there was great joy as all the winners of different nationalities and skin colors came up to receive their prizes. In the true spirit of our Father, the Games ended with everyone dancing exuberantly to the beat of the Korean folk drummers.

Main Convention 1987

The Main Convention had been one of our biggest worries; we felt we needed the support of many professors and students in order to create a solid foundation for Hyo Jin Nim's address to world's youth. But it turned out that over 3,000 people attended the Convention, including guests from all over Europe.

After the opening prayer, sung by a Jewish cantor from a synagogue in Berlin, four professors shared their thoughts about this gathering. Prof. Sussman from Munich apologized on behalf of the Protestant church for its persecution of CARP; Dr. Hanisch, a former East German ideologist, praised CARP for its courage to protest against the Wall; Prof. Svendsen from Norway stressed the necessity to fight for fundamental rights even in a democracy, and Prof. Morton Kaplan, publisher of The World and I magazine, spoke about man's responsibility for the earth.

In his main address, Hyo Jin Nim pointed out that while Marxism has long been discredited among intellectuals, capitalist society cannot offer an alternative. The "me-first" attitude hinders cooperation on a larger scale. Hyo Jin Nim reminded the students that "intellectual brilliance alone" cannot solve world problems. It is only with God's love that "we have the power to unify East and West, North and South. We can bring religions, nations, and peoples together, not by forcing an ideology upon them but by serving them and exemplifying the highest standard of love'

The concluding festival offered a wide range of musical talents, from tender Austrian folk songs to African gospel and rock. Many were brought to their feet in the spirit of celebration. It was a "marathon" evening, almost six hours long, but the result was clear: the Main Convention had been a tremendous victory.

At the Wall of Jericho

The final day was for many of us the high point of the week. Around 2,000 people participated in a seven- kilometer march from the center of Berlin to the Wall near Checkpoint Charlie. Flags of many nations, as well as coffins depicting the millions of deaths under communism, paraded together with banners demanding the demolition of the Wall. This was the most international demonstration against the Wall ever held in Berlin since its erection in 1961.

In spite of all the hazards, Hyo Jin Nim decided to walk in the front of the march all the way. Even though there was excellent police protection, about 150 counter-demonstrators constantly tried to disrupt our march by shouting and throwing paint and eggs. As we passed under a bridge, they tried to pour a bucket of paint on Hyo Jin Nim, but fortunately we forestalled the attack on time.

We stopped at the memorial site of an 18-year-old East German youth who had been murdered while trying to escape over the Wall in 1962. Two hundred leftists were waiting for us. They occupied the two meter-wide strip of East German territory on the western side of the wall, where West Berlin police cannot enter. As they were sholiting, spitting, and throwing cans, we blocked them with our banners. The Blue Tuna Band inspired all participants to sing "Die Mauer muss weg!" ("The wall must go!") The leftists tried to destroy our placards and started to hit our members. So we formed a "human wall" and pushed them towards Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin, where the East German "People's Police" stopped them and pushed them back. A stone hit one of our Japanese brothers, who had to be brought to the hospital. The police arrested nine counter- demonstrators, and the incident was reported in newspapers all over the world.

Meanwhile at the Wall, our rally continued: Powerful speeches alternated with stirring songs. Hyo Jin Nim took the stage and gave what must have been the most profound message ever heard at the Wall. While condemning the crimes of communism, he declared: "That's the difference between communism and Unification Church members: We truly mean to bring about a peaceful world. Not by threats, not by power, not by materialism, but only by the truth of God, only by the love of God.... Inside of God there is even room for Mr. Gorbachev. Inside of God there is even room for people who are accusing us.... It is not too late. Come on, let's go to the wall and pray!"

Rushing through the crowd, Hyo Jin Nim went directly to the Wall and prayed so deeply that everybody around him started to cry with him.

We felt this marked not the end of the rally, but the real beginning of Father's route to Moscow. Even in the following days amazing things happened. For the first time since 1961, a demonstration was held in East Berlin to protest the Wall. Young people there were also shouting "Die Mauer muss weg!" Truly, the spirit world is moving in Father's direction!

Victory Celebration

Our Closing Ceremony that evening was jubilant. It was held in humble surroundings, but the atmosphere was electric. After a truly fatherly speech from Rev. Won Pil Kim, the director of the European church, who explained how the spirit world works to make peace after we have made "good trouble," Hyo Jin Nim spoke passionately and openly like a true elder brother. From the depths of his heart he spoke of his absolute faith in True Parents, challenged our limitations of faith, and assured us of the True Parents' love for us. After cutting the victory cake, he invested everything in the songs he played and sang for us. Later, at dinner with German CARP leaders, Hyo Jin Nim explained that he had never before spoken so frankly except to the blessed children. As he was leaving he asked, "Can I tell Father that you are completely united with me?" We did not have to think twice about the answer.

Mr. Sa predicted that the Berlin Convention would be the most important providential event of 1987. History will have to be the judge of that, but certainly it was the most controversial meeting in Germany so far this year, especially in Berlin, which is celebrating its 750th birthday. From the providential viewpoint, the goal of the Fourth Convention was clearly met: It was a victory in a modern-day battle of Jericho and the opening of the way for the march to Moscow. The efforts of our opponents to prevent the Convention actually served to make us well known, and the persecution and conflicts made all brothers and sisters even more strongly determined to fight and win.

In his victory celebration speech, Mr. Sa pointed out that we achieved unity on many levels: among leaders, between CARP and the Unification Church (who helped in publicity and mobilization), between Abel and Cain (represented by our own lawyer, the courts, and the police), and among the members of World CARP. All our victories, he said, could come only on the foundation of fighting to win. Because we persevered to the end, we could achieve a victory.

It was not only a CARP victory, but a victory for the whole Unification Family. Everyone who took part, irrespective of physical age, could become a member of the victorious "second generation." The success of the Berlin Convention is only the first step in God's final plan to free the communist world. We still have many more battles ahead of us.?many more battles ahead of us.

Opening Ceremony Address
Kwang Kee Sa
August 2, 1987
International Congress Center, Berlin

Good evening, brothers and sisters of World CARP. I am deeply grateful and inspired to be able to welcome you to this Fourth World CARP Convention in Berlin. After our first three Conventions in Seoul, Tokyo, and New York, we have now come to the "wall of communism': externally the front of the battle-line.

As True Father has pointed out, Berlin is the center of communist activity in the free world, and in order to stage our Fourth Convention here, we have fought a very severe battle.

It would take hours to fully explain the events of the last few weeks of our preparations. These times have been very tense and often heartbreaking, but our spirit has been unbreakable, and we were absolutely determined that the Convention would take place, even at the cost of our lives. The whole city of Berlin came against us, but through True Father's personal encouragement, Hyo Jin Nim's deep concern, and our own strong faith, we were finally victorious.

Destined for Victory

The original building for the Main Convention, the Philharmonic Hall, was taken away from us. We were also refused the stadium for our Han Ma Dang Games and the hotels for our banquets. The hall for our Symposium also made impossible demands. In each of these cases, the contract was already signed, but they broke it because of pressure from politicians on the one hand and radical leftists on the other.

However, just as we lost our halls one by one, we could win them back again one by one through court decisions. Now I am deeply grateful to God that we could get this beautiful International Congress Center instead of the Philharmonic Hall. This is truly a victory for heaven. The CARP Convention was destined to take place in Berlin, and even if we had been thrown out of the Congress Center, we would have gone ahead with an open-air convention. As Hyo Jin Nim has already declared, "The spirit of CARP is victory."

Our situation has been very difficult -- almost impossible -- but we never gave up. Communists, anarchists, and other radicals were confronting us daily on the streets, and the city government was using its power trying to stop us. But I was so relieved when Father told us the day before the most important court decision: "Fight, and God will support you" From that moment on we knew we would win.

I would like to talk about the internal or providential meaning of the World CARP Convention.

Father always seeks to solve present and future problems through giving various instructions and inspiring various activities. Due to our lack of understanding, we have often puzzled over Father's instructions and even complained while preparing for events whose providential importance we didn't realize. Thus we have not always given our best because we are apt to consider only present circumstances and are ignorant about the future. In order to show this, let us review the historical significance of each World CARP Convention.

A New Providential Stage

The decision to hold the World CARP Convention was made by Father himself on June 18, 1984. Do you remember what happened on this day? This was the day the U.S. Supreme Court refused Father's case and it was decided that Father should go to prison. On hearing this news, Father immediately declared "World CARP Day" and said, "You CARP members must celebrate this day each year and feel my indignation At the same time, he initiated the organization of World CARP and the World CARP Conventions. Why did he do this? I believe that through the CARP Convention,

Father was starting to prepare for a new stage in the providence. I would like to talk about the results and the purpose of each of the CARP Conventions that have taken place until now.

First CARP Convention

At the time of the first Convention, held November 2-8, 1984, in Seoul, Father was in Danbury, but World CARP members gathered in Korea to demonstrate that Father was innocent. We showed our youthful power and our strong determination to become "second Rev. Moons"

Secondly, the first Convention was an opportunity for us to organize the World CARP movement.

Finally, we could attend Hyo Jin Nim as World CARP president. For CARP, this is a great privilege and honor. Even though Hyo Jin Nim did not appear personally at the first Convention, he became World CARP president at that time.

Second CARP Convention

The significance of the second Convention, held July 16-22, 1985, in Tokyo, Japan, is as follows: First, Hyo Jin Nim made his official debut in front of World CARP members.

Secondly, the providential foundation was laid for a new step in the dispensation. This foundation was made externally through the unity between Hyo Jin Nim and World CARP members at the CARP Convention, and internally through the unity between Hyo Jin Nim and the blessed children at the blessed children's 40- day workshop held in Korea July 8- August 15, 1985.

By uniting externally and internally with Hyo Jin Nim, the second generation, represented by CARP and the blessed children, could take the leadership in the dispensation.

However, we must not forget that this was made possible only by Father himself paying the indemnity for our failures by going to Danbury. We could inherit Father's victory in Danbury through uniting internally and externally with Hyo Jin Nim through the Second Convention and the blessed children's workshop.

Finally, based on this success, Father could declare Total Victory Day and Hyo Jin Nim officially became the central figure of the second generation.

Preparation for Moscow

At the Third CARP Convention held October 9-15, 1986, Hyo Jin Nim, as president of World CARP and host, dominated the whole event, showing his heart and also Father's heart. Secondly, he could substantially start working as World CARP President.

We thus entered a new time period and began preparations for the Fourth CARP Convention in Berlin. Let us examine the meaning of the Fourth Carp Convention.

After the victory of the Washington Monument Rally, Father declared the Moscow Rally. This will be Father's last rally. In other words, Father's final goal is the Moscow Rally. However, before we go to Moscow, Father said, the "Battle of Berlin" must be won.

Berlin is providentially a very significant place. First, it is the symbol of the division of the world into the democratic and communist camps. Secondly, Berlin, with its impenetrable wall, is the modern-day city of Jericho. As CARP, we represent the modern-day Joshua group. As you know, the most difficult challenge for Joshua and the Israelites before entering Canaan was to overcome the city of Jericho. Through their strong faith, they conquered it. This is also the CARP spirit -- never to give up but to overcome with strong faith.

If the Berlin Wall is overcome internally through love and truth, it will automatically be overcome physically.

The breaking down of the Berlin Wall is Father's main hope for European CARP. For this we need to accomplish the goal we set of 12,000 European CARP members. Because Moscow is located in Europe, European CARP must then take responsibility to prepare for the Moscow Rally. Therefore, I believe that the Fourth CARP Convention is God's last platform before entering Moscow. A victory at the Berlin Convention will serve as the internal victory for the Moscow Rally.

The Berlin CARP Convention will become the most important event of 1987. As Father has pointed out, Germany and Korea are deeply connected as starting and ending points in providential history. Events taking place in Germany are bound to affect the situation in Korea. A heavenly victory in Germany is a necessary condition for the unification of the Fatherland.

As World CARP members, let us live up to the hopes and expectations of our True Parents and Hyo Jin Nim by deepening the love and unity amongst ourselves. Let us do our best to achieve victory and become living witnesses to this most historical event.

Why Such Opposition?
Colin Gardiner
August 1987

The question was raised by some participants as to why there should be so much violent opposition to CARP, a worldwide movement that came to Berlin for the cause of freedom and to protest the Wall.

Hyo Jin Nim gave the answer: "The people of the free world realize that communism is a threat to freedom but they have no desire to motivate themselves. They may be suffering, but in the material world they are satisfied with what they have -- that is the sad reality"

Berlin is also a haven for many Marxist-minded youth who come to this city to avoid the 18 months of military service required of all West German young men.

The German student CARP leaders say: "When we talk to leftists they all admit that East Germany is not attractive, but because they don't see any way of changing the situation, they don't even try. They have accepted the Wall. They are unable to imagine what it means to live in the East, even though they are only a few miles away.

"However, we have brought in a new concept -- the Wall must go -- and they have to deal with this new idea. They have been reacting in a negative way. They want to know how we could possibly make the Wall go. They are scared; they feel we might provoke a war, escalate the situation.

"But now Berliners are thinking more deeply about the issue and are beginning to have hope. Many Berliners said they were moved to tears when they saw our banners"

The Wall was symbolically broken the moment Hyo Jin Nim prayed against the concrete barrier, building a bridge from West to East. The spirit world prayed with him, and Berlin will never be the same again.

Hyo Jin Moon Leads the Blessed Children's 40-Day Workshop

Angelika Selle
July 8-August 15, 1985
Chung Pyung Lake, Korea

An interview with three participants of the blessed children's workshop in Korea, Young Hwan Chi, Jin Man Kwak, and Jin Goon Kim.

Young Hwan Chi, 21:

I'm studying psychobiology at New York University. There were over 200 participants at the workshop, all of college age or about to enter college. There were about 101 boys and 110 girls. Around thirty came from America and the rest were from Korea. Of the True Family, Hyo Jin Nim, Kook Jin Nim, Jin Whi Nim, and Jin Sung Nim participated in the seminar.

The purpose of the seminar was to create unity between Korean blessed children and American blessed children and to unite with Hyo Jin Nim, because Father emphasized the importance of unity among the second generation. At the time of Moses, when the first generation wasn't able to go to the land of Canaan, the second generation united with Joshua, and in our time we have to unite with Hyo Jin Nim. Father said that if the second generation can unite with Hyo Jin Nim, God can directly work through the blessed children. We learned that we need to keep in touch with each other and support Hyo Jin Nim, because we have to be the strong foundation upon which he can stand.

We formed 20 mixed groups. Most of the group leaders were blessed children from America, because we had been close to the True Family and could understand the hearts of True Parents and Hyo Jin Nim more. In the groups we discussed all sorts of things -- school, Hyo Jin Nim, and the other True Children. Once the two brothers who were in the accident with Heung Jin Nim got together with some of the Korean blessed children and they just talked about Heung Jin Nim. By speaking about the True Children and understanding their heart, we could share True Parents' love. That was one thing that helped us unite.

Every day we woke up at 6:00 a.m. and met on a sports field. Hyo Jin Nim was usually already there waiting for us and we did exercises for about 20 minutes. Then we wished up and had to be at the lecture room by 6:40. At 6:40 we had prayer or sometimes Hyo Jin Nim spoke. At 8:00 we ate breakfast and at 9:00 we attended our first lecture. We heard the Principle three times, all taught by elder Korean members. We also heard VOC and a little bit of Unification Thought. There was a 20-minute break and then at 10:40 our second lecture began. At 12:00 we had lunch. From 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 was sports. We had 20 minutes to get washed up, and at 3:20 we heard the third lecture. That was followed by another 20-minute break, and then at 5:00 we listened to our fourth lecture.

At 6:20 we had dinner, followed at 7:40 by a fifth lecture or a guest speaker, who usually gave his or her personal testimony. One of these was Mr. Moon, Father's cousin. He talked about his childhood experiences, when Father was a little boy. Usually at 9:00 p.m. we again had prayer, and from 10:00 to 11:00 we had group meetings to discuss the day. Sometimes a lot of groups went overtime to 1:00 a.m. I guess they must have really enjoyed talking.

As in every 40-day workshop we had a few days of fundraising and witnessing. I went fundraising with a sister who spoke Korean. I think Korean people are more friendly and more humble than Americans. At one house she asked a man if he would like to buy some of our household products, but he said no. I told her, "Hey, keep talking;' and finally we went in and displayed our product. Even though I didn't know how to speak Korean that well, I was able to say in Korean, "Please buy, it's not that much!' Finally he bought one.

In witnessing I had a lot of fun because the people I witnessed to were mostly college students who had many things to say. Although I didn't understand Korean I talked for one hour with a student who was in Bible School. I was trying to explain to her about Moses and the separation of the sea and I couldn't; but there was a bucket of water there and with that I was able to explain it. Although finally she didn't come, her brother did.

That night we had a meeting for brand new people. And it was so nice, because when the guests came I felt responsible and I wanted to talk with all of them.

On the final day of witnessing we were in an area of rich houses but we were somewhat hesitant to go in because we thought that rich people were rather close-minded and snobbish. But I thought, "Maybe God has someone there for us',' so I said, "Let's go:' We went and met a nice old lady who understood some of the problems of the world right away, such as: If there is one God, how come there are so many churches? Altogether our experiences were very good because we were giving our hearts. We were trying to show them God's truth. I think a lot of blessed children felt the same.

For me the climax of the workshop was the time the 800 younger blessed children came, the ones about high school age and under. They were each given a blue shirt with a white collar that said "True Parents -- True Children," and they wore them for three days they were there. The final night we made a huge campfire in the center of the sports field. Hyo Jin Nim sang and all the young blessed children were running around the campfire, singing songs. When Hyo Jin Nim was taking a break between songs, the little blessed children ran up to him and sat down, looking at him as if he were a superstar. It was really good that they could experience him in that way. Even though they haven't seen Hyo Jin Nim very much they feel so much love for him in their hearts. By the way, we also had heavenly disco. Hyo Jin Nim danced around the campfire singing, especially the song normally sung between husband and wife -- "Sarang He."

I personally don't know exactly what we're going to be doing in the future. Right now our mission is to go to school, and not just go to school but master our studies, because we have to use our knowledge for the future. Now is the time for us to take responsibility. Father wants all blessed children to work with CARP. We can't just stay in school and do nothing. There's a lot happening right now and we should be part of it. Already many blessed children are participating in CARP. I think in the 120-day workshop, which will take place next summer, we're going to be doing a lot more.

By next year we have to learn how to lecture. Hyo Jin Nim gave us strict orders that blessed children should meet at least two Sundays a month, and from the oldest to the youngest we should practice lecturing the Principle. One time Hyo Jin Nim got really angry at the lecturers because it was clear that they did not really understand Father's heart. So he canceled all the lectures for that day and climbed up a mountain to pray. He said if we wanted to we could climb the mountain and pray also. After that the lectures resumed. But he said next year he would teach the Principle himself, personally.

At the end of the workshop, we gave Hyo Jin Nim a huge card made of cardboard with space for every blessed child to write a message to him. Most of them mentioned that they would give up their lives for him, for True Parents, for this mission, and for God's will. We had learned to really unite with Hyo Jin Nim and to take our lives seriously, because we have a big future in front of us. And it will come soon, too, because we're already in college and in confrontation with the satanic world.

Whenever Hyo Jin Nim spoke he poured out his heart to the blessed children.

Whenever Hyo Jin Nim spoke he poured out his heart to the blessed children.

Jin Man Kwak, 19:

I am in my first year at New York University. Up until now, all the older blessed children had no center and just went their own way. Father never proclaimed Hyo Jin Nim as the central point, although all of us blessed children knew, as we were growing up, that we should unite around the True Family. Father always emphasized unity between the blessed children and his own children. Father's children are in the position to know and feel True Parents' heart more clearly and deeply than we can. Therefore, by uniting with Hyo Jin Nim, we can inherit True Parents' heart.

The era of the second generation has come, and we are now preparing for the future. Hyo Jin Nim always stressed that we should have an absolute standard of faith in our daily life, and based on that God can work through us, since God is Himself absolute, eternal, and unchanging. In order to develop such characteristics and for God to believe in us we must change and approach that absolute standard. Hyo Jin Nim says the second generation must unite and set that absolute standard of faith in True Parents, even to the point of giving our lives for them.

Throughout the whole workshop Hyo Jin Nim led a life of prayer. At the workshop site there was a small room where the True Children stayed, and Hyo Jin Nim prayed there every night. The atmosphere in that room was very intense because of his constant prayer. On that foundation of prayer Hyo Jin Nim could speak to us. I think that's why, when he spoke, we all felt he was talking to each one of us personally. That kind of feeling could only come from his prayer, his preparation, and his total investment, trying to show us True Parents' and God's heart. He tried to make us feel close to God.

During the workshop Hyo Jin Nim was in very poor health because of a minor car accident he was in. From what Jin Sung Nim told us, Hyo Jin Nim threw up every day, sometimes even blood. Yet even though his health was so bad, Hyo Jin Nim gave out everything to us. He would normally never go to a hospital, but this time he had to go. He didn't want to because he didn't want to lower our morale by showing that he was weak.

In addition to his continuing prayer condition at the workshop, Hyo Jin Nim had done a 120-day prayer vigil at East Garden earlier this year. He did it mainly for this workshop, for the unity among the second generation. Our workshop was based on such a foundation of prayer and heartistic investment.

Nan Sook Nim and Shin Jeung Nim had gone to Korea with Hyo Jin Nim, but Hyo Jin Nim was conscious of living a public life and therefore didn't want his wife and child to be to the workshop at all. So he didn't see them for 40 days. And even though he was in such bad health he climbed Chun Syung Mountain, where there's a holy ground. This mountain is very steep and you have to climb a rope in order to get to the top. It takes about two and a half hours. During the workshop Hyo Jin Nim climbed up three times and prayed there. Every time it was like Moses going up to Mt. Sinai to receive a new inspiration. Once we went up there with him and when he reached the top his face was very pale and white.

However, being there with him was a very spiritual and moving experience.

The most wonderful thing I experienced during the forty days was a lot of friendship between the blessed children. Spending time with the blessed children is quite different from spending time with outside children. Among the blessed children we have something in common; we are all of one family, one blood, and that's why we feel such a kinship and brotherhood. I felt an especially strong connection with the brothers, and I sensed God's love very much. I felt so honored and grateful to be in the position of a blessed child, to actually have Father's children guiding us and leading us. We are like the fruits of God's dispensation of 6,000 years. So man., righteous people sacrificed and died for us, and we haven't really done anything; yet we are in the blessed position. We have to realize that this position is crucial and very important. I feel a very deep love for Hyo Jin Nim. I'm pretty sure that Father prayed for us during the workshop while he was in prison and at Phoenix House. We received a lot of spiritual energy.

Jin Goon Kim, 18:

I'm a senior in Arlington High School. I think the purpose of the workshop was the same as last year's: to unite with Hyo Jin Nim as the inheritor of Father's role as the Messiah. As we found out after the workshop, because of the foundation of unity with Hyo Jin Nim that.' e tried to achieve last year and this year, Hyo Jin Nim could stand as the first son of all of humanity before the True Parents, and the blessed children could be in the second son's position. This unity between Cain and Abel was necessary to allow True Parents to stand as the True Parents. That's why this workshop was significant. So we could see the great role Hyo Jin Nim played in God's dispensation.

Last year Father had asked the blessed children to become completely united with Hyo Jin Nim and serve him, just as our physical parents have served the True Parents, so that we could become a bridge between True Parents' family and the world -- in a John the Baptist position. We have to testify to True Parents' children before the world.

Another reason why this workshop was so significant was that until this time the blessed children didn't really know where they belonged. And they also had to find their own faith. Please understand that we also struggle with lack of faith in many cases because we did not really choose to be who we are. We were born to it. But there has to be a point where we realize that this is the way we want to go; we have to make a decision for our- selves. In order for us to do that we have to have a center, like Father. That person is Hyo Jin Nim. He completely poured himself out at this workshop, and because we could feel the sincerity of his love we concluded that we could wholeheartedly follow him.

Before the workshop, a lot of the blessed children hadn't really decided whether they wanted to go through with this life of faith or not. As you know, it is very hard for parents to explain to their children what faith is. It's one thing for the parents to have faith, but to teach faith by words and actions to a child who has never had experience with it is just not possible. There has to be a point where you have to feel it for yourself.

Now as the American members are having children, they can understand a little more that our parents were not able to be with us all the time. The blessed children lived in poverty most of their lives and some still do. When their mothers were pregnant they had to go out for a three-year pioneering course. Because the blessed children led such unusual lives, receiving so much persecution for being different, for not being normal according to the outside world, they had a lot of struggles. The most important thing about this workshop was that the blessed children were finally able to find their road.

The workshop was mainly an experience of opening our hearts: exposing what our common problems are, what we are facing in the world, and helping each other overcome the problems and become one with our True Parents. Now is the time when we really have to get rid of all the garbage that we might have experienced, and then determine ourselves to go the way that we're supposed to go, that we are fated to go. You might say there's not much choice, that there's nothing to decide, but there is a big difference between just going because you have to and going because you're determined to, and you want to. It was good because we decided on the right choice.

I think this is just the beginning of the children's course. Whether or not the workshop was successful will be seen after the workshop, in what we actually do. The workshop itself was just a training, to find the road and step out onto it. From now on it's a matter of walking it and persevering to the end.

Hyo Jin Nim was so sick that it was hard for him to even sit through the lectures. His body was very weak, and there was a period of ten days during the workshop when he had to go to the doctor, even though he didn't want to. He wanted to persevere even though his life was in danger. The doctor told him that if he had come only a few days later, he might have died. That is how serious his condition was. But because Hyo Jin Nim has a very strong constitution, he was able to endure the physical difficulties. Every morning Hyo Jin Nim would give a speech, and for him to give a speech he had to pray to God and really think about what he wanted to give us, what was appropriate for the time. To do all that takes so much effort. And Hyo Jin Nim is not a superhuman; he can't just automatically pop something out without any preparation. He had to pour so much into it, and as much as he poured into it, results came. For these reasons we could truly feel the sincerity of Hyo Jin Nim's heart in his speeches.

Basically he spoke about what Father usually speaks about: absolute unity, the need to be absolutely unchanging and eternal like God, and to live for others, always remembering that we are living for eternity. Therefore we can't follow temporary or physical values. We always have to think about God and eternal, absolute values. That is the main thing that Father emphasizes. Many of us mentioned that Hyo Jin Nim sounded so much like Father. Father speaks a lot about universal things, and so does Hyo Jin Nim -- universal things that are very important.

By the way, while Hyo Jin Nim was praying for 120 days for this workshop, some of us prayed with him there at East Garden. Many nights it was freezing cold. Hyo Jin Nim decided to invest three days of prayer for each single day of the workshop. That's how much he prepared himself beforehand.

One time he told us he had learned through a medium in Korea that Heung Jin Nim was setting up a time to be with him at East Garden every day during that 120-day prayer condition. I think that is just one expression of Heung Jin Nim's deep love for Hyo Jin Nim, how much he wants to help and support him along the way. I think the same thing happened at the workshop; that Heung Jin Nim probably prepared the Chung Pyung area for the workshop a long time beforehand.

We were not touched or moved so much by the lectures, but we changed through listening to Hyo Jin Nim's speeches and through living and learning from each other. Of course, the Principle lectures and all the other lectures helped. But we did not come to this workshop to learn the truth. We've heard the Principle all our lives. What we needed was true love, the sense of belonging somewhere and experiencing True Parents' and Hyo Jin Nim's love. And I think that was only possible because of Hyo Jin Nim's prayer life and Heung Jin Nim's cooperation.

Concerning the role of the blessed children in the future, Hyo Jin Nim hasn't really spoken about that specifically. But he gave us guidance about what we have to strive for in the future, such as becoming one with True Parents and the True Children, centering especially upon Hyo Jin Nim. Father himself explained those things during last year's workshop, when we had more time to be with him. There was one sentence Father said that sums it all up: The blessed children have to be a bridge between the True Children and the world. We have to become the foundation upon which the True Children can stand and work. Without the blessed children's unity with them, the True Children can't be leaders of the second generation.

This workshop coincided not only with the end of Father's forty-year course, but also with the anniversary of the liberation of Korea on August 15, 1945. Exactly forty years from that day the workshop ended. August 15, 1985, marked the liberation of the world, because Hyo Jin Nim could successfully stand as the center of the second generation. It was a liberation that enabled not only the blessed children but the world to come to a new level. On that day there was a feeling of total victory, and we went up to Heung Jin Nim's resting place and Hyo Jin Nim prayed. After that day, Total Victory Day (Il Seung Il) could be proclaimed on August 16. I think it was partly due to the foundation of Hyo Jin Nim in Korea. So this workshop was quite significant for God's dispensation.

This is the time when we can really feel that we belong somewhere and we can realize what our responsibility is. It is important for us blessed children to take on our responsibility and mission. I understand that Father alone can't do it and True Children alone can't do it, no matter how hard they try. They need the cooperation of us, not only of the blessed children but also of all the members. But, because the blessed children are in the second son's position to the True Children, we have to be especially united with them and become their foundation.

I want to make a special determination to live up to the expectation of God. Although we don't often think about it, the blessed children are such precious children to God. We are the first children without original sin in 6,000 years of tragedy because of our parents' and ancestors' suffering for God. I want to say to all other blessed members that you are doing the same thing for God, and your children will be in the same precious position to serve God. We want to pioneer the way for the blessed children in the future, because being the oldest, we want to make it easier for all the other blessed children to come. We want to set up a tradition that can pass on much more smoothly, so they won't have to struggle as we did.

Inherit the harmonious spirit of Han Ma Dang

President's Opening Address
Second Annual Han Ma Dang Sports Festival

Hyo Jin Nim addresses the crowd gathered for the Han Ma Dang Games.

Hyo Jin Nim addresses the crowd gathered for the Han Ma Dang Games.

Honorable guests, ladies and gentlemen, brothers and Sisters:

I would like to officially welcome you to the Second Annual Han Ma Dang Sports Festival. On behalf of God and True Parents I want to thank all World CARP members for their attendance at this festival, with special thanks to the Japanese CARP members for their hard work in preparing this beautiful environment.

The Han Ma Dang Festival is an event that transcends race, national boundaries, language, and culture, celebrating the joy of becoming brothers and sisters under God.

If we examine the meaning of Han Ma Dang, we see that "Han" signifies "oneness" or "center," and "Ma Dang" encompasses the meaning of both "open space" and "festival." So the Korean word Han Ma Dang indicates a big outdoor festival emphasizing the oneness, unity, and harmony of individuals as they open themselves to the center.

We should strive to inherit the harmonious spirit of Han Ma Dang and apply it to all aspects of our life, as we seek to build the Kingdom of Heaven on earth: a world without barriers and limitations.

Father has taught us that such a goal can only be accomplished as each of us leads an unselfish, sacrificial life, walking in the shoes of a servant but bearing the heart of a parent. Let us show the world through our Han Ma Dang Festival the spirit of determination and harmony that will someday allow us to be the responsible young people who will create the world of love that God hopes for.

Here in this stadium we are continuing the powerful tradition of Han Ma Dang. Unlike the Olympic Games, which have lost touch with their original purpose and have become an arena for political power plays and nationalistic struggles, our Han Ma Dang Festival will forever promote global cooperation and harmony.

This sports festival will grow rapidly, and each year will see the addition of new events and participants, leading us to closer and deeper bonds of international friendship.

Finally, I pray that brotherly love will inspire this festival from beginning to end and that we can feel God's love touch us as World CARP brothers and sisters.

May God bless you.

Thank you very much.

There was never an age that faced such a crisis as we are facing today

Hyo Jin Moon

Second CARP Convention of World Students
Keynote Address
Kokugi-Kan Hall, Tokyo Japan

World Carp Brothers and Sisters:

First of all, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to God and True Parents that we are able today to hold such a splendid Second CARP Convention of World Students.

Looking back at history, we see that there was never an age that faced such a crisis as we are facing today. With the development of science, it has become possible to explore space and to restructure the gene. The development of computers and robots has made man's life extremely convenient. Yet instead of enhancing the quality of human life, this rapid modernization has only further alienated man from his real self. Drug abuse, free sex, and other problems that cause demoralization and family disruption are still out of control. Starvation is rampant in Africa, and the religious struggle continues in the Middle East. The expansion of communism has become the final threat to all humankind.

From this viewpoint, we have to ask ourselves whether humanity is approaching a tragic end or if it can overcome these problems and march onward towards a bright eternal future.

What, then, is the cause of this worldwide confusion and crisis? It stems from the absence of absolute values. This means that unless a standard of absolute values is established which transcends nations, races, and religious doctrines, this crisis cannot be solved. If it is not solved, humanity is doomed, and we will lose God's love, God's ideal, and God's hope.

What is the ultimate absolute value? It is eternal, unchanging, absolute love. In order to establish the value of absolute love, a subject of absolute love is necessary, and this subject can only be God.

During the Middle Ages, Christianity predominated in the West, and Confucianism and Buddhism were paramount in the East. However, Darwin's theory of evolution, which denies the creation of the world by God, and a materialistic worldview began to spread under the name of science. As a result man's spiritual, ethical, and moral foundations were completely undermined.

We may say that the human crisis is the absence of a love relationship with God. Therefore, the most important question of our time is whether God, the subject of absolute love, will be accepted as the Parent of humankind, or rejected.

Many people today are not clear about such matters as good and evil, justice and injustice, and the purpose of life. These are essential questions which must be answered as a precondition for living a true and valuable life. Instead of striving to solve these questions, most people lead busy lives trying to satisfy material and fleshly desires.

Furthermore, religious people today selfishly maintain that only their religion is the true one, and engage in bitter struggles against each other. The confusion over ideology, as well as the conflicts caused by extreme nationalism, are all traceable to continuously growing disbelief in God, egoism, and prejudice.

Is there a solution to this worldwide confusion, conflict, and intolerance? Yes. A worldwide turning to Godism! In Godism, men and women restore their original parent-child relationship with God, with absolute love as the center. On the basis of vertical love with God all people can become one through horizontal brotherly love, and can form the ideal world.

Such an ideal world is the greatest desire of both God and humanity. For six thousand years God has been toiling to establish this ideal world, but He cannot do it alone. He needs our help and cooperation. Thus, He has been searching for a person who could finally fulfill His will.

This year we celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the end of World War Il. In the Bible, the number forty is a very significant number because it is used for the separation from Satan and the starting of a new providence.

The Bible contains many records of saints whose providential lives were centered on the number forty; in particular, the story of Moses provides the moving account of how he brought an end to the Israelites' four hundred years of suffering under Pharaoh and led them out of Egypt.

Moses fasted twice for forty days and went through severe struggles in order to realize his dream of restoring Canaan. Yet, as you know, there was a great lack of faith among the Israelites, and so Moses led them through the wilderness for forty years until all those who left Egypt, the first generation, perished in the desert, except for two. Only Joshua and Caleb, with the second generation, "the internal Israelites," entered Canaan as a result of their absolute faith and loyalty.

Today, we are in the position of the internal Israelites. Who else will realize the worldwide restoration of Canaan? It will surely not be the pleasure-seeking corrupt generation of the present day. Instead it is us, the young people struggling to overcome injustice and irrationality, the internal Israelites of this era, who are pioneering the future.

World CARP brothers and sisters! Suffering and hard work is something which is needed for fruitful results. The founder of CARP, Rev. Sun Myung Moon, has overcome trials and sufferings that no other man could bear. Those hardships he bore for the realization of God's ideal.

The difficulties we face today are part of the process of building a better world for tomorrow. The worldwide restoration of Canaan will be realized when we overcome present hardships and unite centering upon a new ideal which embraces the whole world and universe.

We young people of the world represent the loyal and pure internal Israelites. Armed with the power of love and truth, we must lead the way to fulfill God's ideal world.

The fact that the Second CARP Convention of World Students is being held in Japan is very meaningful. Japan is a country that has established loyalty, filial piety, and harmony as the traditions of its people. The accomplishment and suffering of the Japanese members, through their loyalty and filial piety centering upon God's will, has become an example to the world. Now, we participants of the World CARP Convention should expand this spirit of harmony to the worldwide level.

Let us make the Second CARP Convention of World Students a new starting point, and devote even more effort toward creating a world centered upon God. Let us march forward to build a world of one family, a world of absolute love and absolute values, which transcends races, nations, religions, and doctrines.

Let us welcome the coming 21st century as God's century, radiant with hope, joy, and fellowship. May God bless you. Thank you very much.

Developing the Heart of a Filial Son - Interview with Hyo Jin Moon, Hyun Jin Moon, Kook Jin Moon, and Jin Sung Pak

At East Garden Holy Ground in February. Left to right: Hyun Jin Nim, Hyo Jin Nim, Kook Jin Nim, and Jin Sung Nim.

From January 12 to February 20, Hyo Jin Nim made a special forty-day condition to pray every night from midnight to 2 a.m. at East Garden holy ground His motivation was to solidify his determination to support Father completely as his True Son and to deepen his commitment to Father's sacrificial way of love. Among many other things, he prayed for the unity of the True Family and/or the unity of all the blessed children of the world for whom he feels personally responsible.

Shortly after Hyo Jin Nim began his condition, Hyun Jin Nim, Kook Jin Nim, and Jin Sung Nim wanted to support their brother by praying with him, and they ended up making forty-day prayer conditions themselves. The following is an interview with the four brothers after their conditions were completed

Dong Moon Joo:

Hyo Jin Nim, could you tell us your motivation for doing this prayer condition?

Hyo Jin Nim:

I am the eldest son of True Parents' family. I only did what I felt I had to do. There are no words to express how moved I was when my brothers joined me in prayer every night. What especially touched me was that they did it voluntarily from their hearts, thinking, "I must go through this together with my brother. Whatever it takes, I want to support him." They all have a very full daily schedule but they came every night without one word of complaint.

I want to be a person who can give freely, but it's not easy to constantly have this attitude of heart. My utmost desire is to be able to give my greater, larger self. Many people have lost the ability to manage or develop themselves constructively; they pursue only their own interests and settle for merely personal achievement or material success. You cannot become your true self if you are only disjointed fragments. So because of this, I want to understand and manifest God's will, whatever it takes, and I want to not only digest all the different aspects of myself, but convey this "digested" self to others.

And I also have a wish for my brothers and sisters: that they become people who can stand before the world and convey God's message. My lifelong goal is to glorify God. In the eternal world God is all there is; so I want to become a person who can understand God's will and reflect His love. My hope is that my Unification Church brothers and sisters can also become such people. I believe our path is the only path that can lead us to the achievement of this goal.

I wish with all my heart that without a day's delay blessed families, including blessed children, can become united and absolutely obedient and responsible to the True Parents.

At the start of their two-hour vigil, Jin Sung Nim was usually the first to pray. Left to right: Hyo Jin Nim, Hyun Jin Nim, Kook Jin Nim, and Jin Sung Nim.

Dong Moon Joo:

Could you other brothers explain what motivated you to participate in this condition?

Hyun Jin Nim:

At first, it was because I wanted to support Hyo Jin Hyung. I really didn't understand the meaning and depth of this forty-day condition. Later on I realized its purpose. It also helped me understand myself better. Until this condition I didn't clearly perceive my faults or my good points. Sometimes it was very hard for me to face the facts. But I feel this condition came at a stage when I was breaking through adolescence, I guess, and arriving at a newer understanding of the world, my position, and the people around me. I don't feel that my doing this condition was such a great accomplishment; it was so small compared to the many other great gifts Hyo Jin Hyung and Father have given to God and humanity. In my heart I feel that it was too small to be so significant; it was actually a time to grow.

Kook Jin Nim:

I started the forty-day condition during my exam week, when Hyo Jin Hyung had already begun his condition. I did it because I love my brother and I wanted to be with him. At first I participated only on the weekends. And after exams were over, the basic reason I went up to the holy rock was to support my brother and keep him company. But when Hyo Jin Hyung had finished his condition I kept on going because I had started something, and I couldn't just let it hang, because I was doing it for True Father. I was praying for the members, so that they could realize what kind of suffering my brothers had gone through. So I decided to complete the rest of my condition.

Jin Sung Nim:

When Hyo Jin Hyung Nim started his condition, I was beginning a new semester in law school. I went up to pray with him a couple of times. As a new member of the True Family, I'm always trying to find a better way to serve the True Family and unite with my brothers and sisters. But I realized through the guidance of Hyo Jin Hyung Nim, Hyun Jin Nim, and Kook Jin Nim that I was allowing too many excuses to come into my mind when I thought about a forty-day condition. Many times a little voice in my head would say, "Well, you're very busy," or, "Your school is very important, so you have to watch out and get enough rest at night so you're not sleepy in class." And I realized that, in a way, Satan was trying to come into my mind. On the one hand I wanted to become a better brother for my new brothers and sisters. But at the same time I knew that if I didn't do anything about it, Satan would attempt to come in and influence me to take the comfortable way and find some justification for not making the effort. With the help and example of Hyo Jin Hyung Nim, however, I began to realize that you have to take responsibility and do something towards your goal instead of just thinking about it. And even though school was on my mind, I realized how Father always gives more and more and doesn't pay attention to excuses. So, besides the fact that I wanted to go out and support Hyo Jin Hyung Nim, I also realized that I needed this kind of condition to deepen my own heart so I could become a better brother.

Dong Moon Joo:

What did you see as the most significant point of the forty days?

Hyun Jin Nim:

When I was sitting there with Hyo Jin Hyung on my right side and Kook Jin on my left and I heard them pray, I could feel their determination and devotion to their missions for the sake of the world, and how much love they were giving out. I could especially feel this from Hyo Jin Hyung. He was always praying about how to further the creation of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. My two younger brothers were right there supporting him, and this truly builds the spiritual fire in you. You just want to get up and shout, you have so much energy.

You want to go out there and teach people what they're doing wrong. When they're praying it's that intense.

They came every night to the holy rock. They might have had an exam the next day, or three tests to study for, or it might have been cold and raining. In such situations your body doesn't want to respond to you. But in spite of all these circumstances they would come and pray; they would share their feelings. To me that was the most inspiring aspect of it. Every time I heard them pray, it made me feel that I had to give them something through my prayers or through my actions.

Kook Jin Nim:

The most inspiring thing for me was hearing my brothers' words. They spoke truth not just on the family or tribal level; they spoke for the sake of the world and the universe. Their words weren't just words; they had deep feelings behind them. Hearing what they said about the responsibility of each of us inspired me very much to go on, because when they prayed I felt Father's heart coming right through their words. I felt the sense of responsibility they have toward our Heavenly Father and True Parents and their other brothers and sisters; how much they care about the suffering of others, how much they would like the members to be aware of that, and how they don't want our Heavenly Father to suffer any more.

Jin Sung Nim:

For me the most inspiring point was having True Family there and being able to listen to them pray. I especially spent a lot of time with Hyun Jin Nim and Kook Jin Nim, and even though they are just starting high school I know they are under a lot of pressure. During those prayers, I usually prayed first, then Kook Jin Nim, then Hyun Jin Nim, and then Hyo Jin Hyung Nim. During the day Kook Jin Nim and Hyun Jin Nim are normal, active youths. But when I heard them pray, I was just astounded by the depth with which they were speaking one on one to Heavenly Father.

During their prayer they did something they usually don't do around people: they opened up their hearts; and because I was there I was able to hear, see and feel the most inner self they were offering to Heavenly Father. I am sure that in Heavenly Father's eyes they are not just children, and I was there to witness their deep understanding of Heavenly Father's and True Parents' heart. It was just unbelievable that they prayed this way at such a young age. What you see with your eyes can sometimes make you not see, because when they were sharing with Heavenly Father, suddenly their great strength and their characters just flowed out and almost overwhelmed me. When I listened to Hyo Jin Hyung Nim pray there was a closeness between him and Heavenly Father that was so intimate. I was there witnessing a conversation between Heavenly Father and His children. It was a very, very special time.

Dong Moon Joo:

If Father were here right now, what would you like to say to him?

Hyun Jin Nim:

You know Father's history: at the age of 16 he pledged to Jesu Nim that he would accomplish the goal and become a true man and do this mission even if it meant giving lip his life. I myself feel that this is the only meaningful gift I can offer to True Father and True Mother.

Dong Moon Joo:

What is that?

Hyun Jin Nim:

The pledge to become a true son of God and a true son of True Parents. The pledge to become an ideal person, an ideal Adam. But I feel that even though this forty-day condition seems significant, I still have much more to do, because Father did not just stop at the age of 16 after pledging his life to Jesu Nim; he kept on doing even more and giving even greater pledges and making bigger determinations. I want to give the same to Father.

Kook Jin Nim:

I don't feel I have to say anything to Father, because from the beginning of their lives our True Parents have done so many conditions and suffered so much. They know I have gone up to the holy rock for forty days; they know what I have prayed for, what I have asked Heavenly Father for. When they were young, they also made the same kinds of conditions; so it is not necessary for me to go to my father and report what I have done. I just went up to the holy rock to pray, not for myself but for my brothers and sisters and for Heavenly Father; so it is not my victory, it is their victory. I cannot go up to my True Father and True Mother and say, "Look what I have done," because I have not done anything so great.

Jin Sung Nim:

Like Hyun Jin Nim and Kook Jin Nim I feel that my Father is looking at me, and though he gives me so much love and understanding through his eyes, I know he's hoping that I can do much more. He knows that I do not see the suffering, the bloodshed, and the tears that have gone before me. In a way there isn't really much to say about this forty- day condition because it was our duty. As Hyo Jin Hyung Nim often tells us, if something is expected of us, and we are able to do it, then accomplishing that deed or condition is nothing to brag about. Even though True Parents are happy, we are just fulfilling our responsibilities.

Dong Moon Joo:

What message would you like to send to your brothers and sisters worldwide?

Kook Jin Nim:

I hope that soon the heavenly tradition will be brought down to earth and all the people in the world will follow the proper order in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, which is absolute and cannot be compromised. That order descends in a chain: True Parents' family comes first, then the first disciples, and then the next disciples. This was the way the Kingdom of Heaven is to be founded. The whole world was made according to strict heavenly law.

Jin Sung Nim:

Nobody thinks more about the brothers and sisters in our movement than the True Parents and the True Children. Everyone here is so grateful for the effort and the sacrifices that our brothers and sisters are making out there. But one of the things I have come to realize is the profound meaning of the word "true." I have been spending enough time with the True Family to see the difference between true and not true, and I know that the key point, not only for our members but for the whole world, is that every person has to go from not being true to being true. Many times you can't see clearly, even though True Father has been giving words of guidance for many years. It's very difficult to strive continually towards the highest goal. Our members should be careful to never become static. Every day they need to know as individuals and as families and as groups that their goal is still far ahead of them. They have to try every day to keep moving, because if they stop moving, Satan's constant attack will make them lose ground even without their knowing it. They always have to know that their goal is the very highest goal, and they have to keep going.

Many of our brothers and sisters in this movement have been members for many years, and sometimes they judge the Unification movement. But I deeply felt during this forty-day condition that this time is one of the greatest turning points in the history of humankind, and especially in the history of our church. As Father has told us, had Christianity accepted him, the Unification Church would not have needed to exist. Now after forty years of Father's total sacrifice we have come back to another crucial point. I hope our brothers and sisters can understand that there is a great change coming; the greatest of victories is at hand. But it can only come about if our members are ready to move into action. We have to break out of our old way of thinking and understand that a brand new beginning is coming upon us in our movement. Our Father is saying that out of thousands of members even just a few hundred of us need to completely understand the crucial aspect of this time. Hopefully more people than that can comprehend the path that we have to take, starting in 1985, upon Father's great victory at Danbury.

Dong Moon Joo:

Jin Sung Nim, what is the point that has most inspired and impressed you about the True Children?

Jin Sung Nim:

Sometimes I look at myself and see the reality of my own situation and how far I have to go before I can reach my goals. Then I see that every day I make so many blunders, many careless mistakes of character. My motivation and my thinking are not always pure. I know each of the True Children is extremely sensitive. They feel all the impurities of character and heart around them. I know it's so easy when you receive some deeper truth to turn around and judge your brothers and sisters. But True Children never do that. They always want to understand and give you more love; they always try to raise you up.

Dong Moon Joo:

Could you give us your understanding of filial piety?

Jin Sung Nim:

I know that if I don't really understand how much True Parents are doing for all of us and for God, then I cannot actually say that my love for them is true. If the parents are suffering and the children say, "I love my parents, [love my parents," but they do not even see their parents' suffering, then they only have a shallow love for them. So I think I have to develop my understanding of my Parents and how much they are sacrificing, how much they are suffering, before I am able to say that I am a filial son.

Dong Moon Joo:

When are Father and Mother happiest?

Kook Jin Nim:

When they see their children doing well in school, getting good grades and so forth, they are very proud of their children. True Parents actually feel joy when their children excel. At times some of the children may not be doing so well in school. But when True Parents see them playing with each other, expressing closeness and love -- that makes them happy. Although I cannot definitely say what brings True Parents joy, I feel this does, watching my younger brothers and sisters playing and feeling so much love for each other.

Jin Sung Nim:

Father and Mother ask us to go to school so that we can have a respected position in the eyes of the world -- so that people will listen to our message. I know that will make Father and Mother happy. I'm already 23 years old, and I'm still becoming a man -- and by Heavenly Father's standards that means I should also become a true man. When I grew up in Washington, I spent most of my time just going to school and being a good student. But many ideas from fallen society can influence you when you're young if you're not careful. Especially now during this crucial time when we are all growing up so quickly, before we all become mature men and women, we have to prepare our hearts. And when I can deepen my heart with a greater understanding of True Parents and what they are trying to do, that will make them happy.

When I compare myself to my true brothers, Hyo Jin Hyung Nim, Hyun Jin Nim, and Kook Jin Nim, spiritually I feel I'm a whole generation apart. They are a generation ahead of us. When I am with True Parents, I feel my understanding of the significance of everything around me is so shallow. I feel that Father and Mother only need to look into my eyes for one second, and they know where I am. I am convinced that my only offering is within myself; I have to try to bring myself closer to understanding them, closer to becoming a true man.

Dong Moon Joo:

What do you feel is the most significant and inspiring point about Hyo Jin Nim?

Hyun Jin Nim:

He is able to put his personal desires behind him and do things for others. That is truly Father's spirit. In many ways he is just like Father--how he speaks, how he looks at you. But as with Father, I cannot say any one part of him is great; everything is great. Hyo Jin Hyung is the first son of True Father and True Mother and the first male representative of our family. I thank him because in so many ways he demonstrated the trueness of our True Family.

I have three heroes in my life. The first one is True Parents -- I think of them as one entity. I can't see one without feeling the presence of the other. The next two are Hyo Jin Hyung and Heung Jin Hyung. I hope I can absorb all the wonderful traits of Hyo Jin Hyung. He has great determination, love, filial piety, and strength in so many fields; and I hope I can also inherit the fine traits of Heung Jin Hyung -- his ability to care so much for people and his great filial piety and true-heartedness.

Kook Jin Nim:

Hyo Jin Hyung, like our True Father, is a unifier; he is one with himself, and he is able to control his emotions and his feelings and live for his children, his people. That aspect of being able to sacrifice everything for his brothers and sisters and for the people around him is one of the things I most admire about him.

Jin Sung Nim:

I truly, truly love Hyo Jin Hyung Nim. It's very hard to point out a specific characteristic I like best. We were not around when Father as a boy took up his challenge and developed through many stages to become a true man in the sight of God. When I look at Hyo Jin Hyung Nim and the other True Children, I can see for the second time in the history of the universe something very special: true sons and daughters of God as He intended them to be, growing up.

One way to understand how the True Children enter the perfection stage is that as they grow, they are deepening their love for Father and Mother, and they are thereby connecting directly to Heavenly Father. And now we are witnessing Heavenly Father coming to dwell in Hyo Jin Hyung Nim's heart. When we pray many of us just ask Heavenly Father for something. But suddenly, right before our eyes, we're watching Hyo Jin Hyung Nim becoming a true man. Heavenly Father is so clearly calling him, pouring so many things into his mind and heart. And just to watch that, to witness this kind of fulfillment, and to know that everyone is intended one day to reach it, is very, very inspiring.

Dong Moon Joo:

In light of Father's mission, what do you think Hyo Jin Nim will do in the future?

Hyun Jin Nim:

I feel Hyo Jin Hyung is walking the same road as True Father. There is a lot to this, because Father is striving to achieve worldwide unity and bring about the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. But to bring the proper order and godly standards to the world, is the work of the second generation; to modify, shape, and smooth the edges is our task. And since Hyo Jin Hyung is the leader, I feel that is his role. But in heart and spirit Hyo Jin Hyung has the same role as Father, because their goals are the same; their objective is to make a better world.

Kook Jin Nim:

During this time members hear or read Father's words, but sometimes they feel shaky about them or they don't understand what Father is trying to say. Hyo Jin Hyung shows a true understanding of Father's words and is able to teach us this kind of understanding.

Jin Sung Nim:

Father and Mother have been walking a lonely path, trying to teach thousands of people the truth. If our leaders could fully understand True Father's heart, many more people could accompany Father on this road. But up until now, Father and Mother have been walking this road alone, and no one could completely understand them. Now we have somebody who has found True Parents' path and is running up to Father and Mother to share that path with them; one who is ready to go even to the farthest destination that Father and Mother want to reach.

I do not even understand yet where Father and Mother are and where they are going. For instance, when I try to imagine what's going to happen next year or in five or ten years, I realize that my understanding is very weak. Father has planned out all those years so carefully, and now Hyo Jin Hyung Nim, with his wonderful mind, is planning out the future very carefully too. He is thinking very much about the blessed children. I hope this new generation, the blessed children, can unite as closely as they can with Hyo Jin Hyung Nim and the True Family; that will signify a great new age. I am sure that guided by Hyo Jin Hyung Nim, the blessed children's depth of heart can go far beyond what we know now.

Often we are struggling

Hyo Jin Moon
March 30, 1985

HyoJinMoon-850330_a.jpg

On June 18, 1984, True Father met with international leaders of CARP at East Garden and explained that the organization was now entering a new phase, the era of the second generation. Present at the meeting were Mr. Ohta of Japan, Rev. Bong Tae Kim of Korea, Dr. Joon Ho Seuk and Mr. Dieter Schmidt of Germany. Father announced that his oldest son Hyo Jin nim would now assume the position of World CARP president. Until that time, World CARP had existed only in theory, it was not a formal organization and no one other than Father himself had been the leader of World CARP. It was not therefore a clearly defined role but it represented a major responsibility.

Hyo Jin Moon took this challenge seriously. From January 12 to June 11, 1985, he completed a 100-day prayer condition at the Belvedere holy ground. Hyo Jin nim explained that the purpose behind his prayer was "to achieve a heartistic union or oneness with Father, where I would begin to understand his suffering as his eldest son." Later, Dr. Seuk stated that Hyo Jin nim had restored the heavenly older son's position through his prayer vigil and that by uniting with him, the blessed children and CARP had restored the original heavenly order of older child and younger child.

Hyo Jin Moon's first official address as the leader of World CARP was delivered on March 30, 1985, at the Columbia Center in New York City, where a hundred East Coast CARP members met with Dr. Seuk and his wife Moon Hye Yoon. Hyo Jin nim cut the ribbon to officially open the newly refurbished center. The following is the address he gave on that occasion before leaving to visit his father in Danbury, Connecticut.

First of all, I would like to thank everybody and to celebrate this occasion. I want to thank all of you for standing strong against Satan. Often, if I am at home, I get many letters from brothers and sisters telling me the story of how they first joined the church, what their missions are and what their experiences have been like in the Unification Church. Many times those letters are really heartaches; they move me a lot. Often the members are really struggling, struggling to relate with their leaders, struggling to fight off many temptations. They are struggling to adapt to their environment. They frequently struggle with their leaders and with themselves. Sometimes this hurts me. For whatever we do and whatever we feel about each other, nothing must belong to Satan. Nothing can be claimed by Satan. When we ourselves are separated and we admit to ourselves that something is wrong with each other, we are admitting to ourselves and to Satan that he has won that course and that part of our lives. Yesterday, I was at Holy Rock thinking about each one of you, what I can say to you and how I can bring you more closely together and closer to True Parents. How can we understand the value of what Father and God are preparing for us to do?

I often ask myself: When do I repent?

When is the ideal time to repent? Do I repent because I am weak or because I am ashamed of the external mistakes that I have made? Is that the only time I repent? Then I felt inside that when we repent we are coming closer to God, because God is eternal. God is endless. When you set yourself up, confident as one being, you are limiting your growth.

I am only so much as one man. Even God is seeking out and Father is seeking to find the ideal vessel for the perfect man. When we are over-confident in ourselves we stop growing. We are here to unite, but not just to unite but to truly understand God and to be with God; to understand what God is trying to prepare for us, what his love is all about. How can we not try to reach for that which is endless and eternal? So our lives should depend on repentance. I don't think this is something we should be ashamed of. I think it is the greatest thing. It is the way we can be with God.

I was so much into martial arts, physical activities and going out just doing whatever I was drawn to. I was always trying to accomplish something. When I accomplished it, I felt satisfied, but still I always wanted mom. I wanted to reach out to every part of you and every part of the world, but I would say to myself that that is not the greatest thing. God is not just one thing. He is the creator of the universe. I don't want to put myself just in the position of a guitar player or a martial artist. I would rather be just Father's son speaking to you. I want to touch more. I want to be more, not for myself, but for all of you. Do you think living for my own satisfaction will be welcomed in God's dominion? God is always giving, preparing, always the provider, and always loving. With that kind of heart, in that kind of world, how can I survive when I only seek my best interest, my gratification? That is when I stop to think and realize that it is wrong.

Many young people get inspiration in times of struggle through things. They rejoice and feel closer to things, but I want to give you more than just a moment of satisfaction. Sometimes fighting off disease is a painful course but I cannot give you some kind of drug that can cure you moment by moment. If I care about you, even though it hurts, both Father and I will say to you strongly that you must do this. Why? Because that is our work. That is how much we must work for God.

Why are we here? Are we here because we ourselves are great? No, we are here to give. We are here to receive God's love and give it to our children. That is the greatest thing we can accomplish. What more can we do? What greater task can you think of where you can proudly stand in the world of eternity and in the sight of God? Physical fame or greatness? I don't think there is any greatness that can top the suffering that you want to offer to God.

What is filial piety? It is wanting to take my father's suffering, my brother's suffering. I want to do that because I love my family; I love my God. Many people live in the fallen world and they just take love -- such an endless and precious thing. Yet they make love into a little thing, into just physical love.

When we are young and growing up, we should learn the right things but there is nothing out there providing true guidance or the true meaning of love. There is nothing out there for us to learn but we pick up fallen things because we are desperate and we need to dwell on love. So we make ourselves believe that that is love. Without a model of a true man and a true woman, there is nothing. That is what Father said. Father said, "Why didn't Jesus give the ideal image of a human being? Why didn't he say this person is the ideal man and you should follow this person? Why did he say he was going to come back?"

America is truly a God-prepared nation. Why? Because it is said here that all men are created equal. That was to prepare for the coming of the Messiah. If that had not happened, many people would stand up and proclaim a false Messiah. They would claim themselves as the Messiah. The founding fathers may not have understood why they were enforcing this so strongly, but it is what God wanted. That is what I feel.

When I was young, going to school was the hardest thing to do. The accusations they threw at me I could take, but when they accused my parents, that I could not bear. I go to school now and I see many young people. They are still struggling to find the truth. Sometimes I get angry. I get so angry that I hate what they are doing. How can someone let themselves believe that they are not a child of God? They believe that they are the son of a monkey. How can they see their own value in that kind of society? That is why when you can change hatred into love it can become the greatest power. In the darkest place the light burns brighter.

I believe that when Father sent me to school he wanted me to learn how to change things. He wanted me to gain confidence, not my own confidence, but confidence that with God we can do it. I can do it.

I am learning about the people. I learn about what they believe and their ideology. I learn about their lifestyle and what their weaknesses are.

Even in CARP, with martial arts, we are telling young people to have a strong internal image. When you fight, you must know your opponent. How can you become a good fighter? You must fight many, many times and fight with many different types of people because each person has a different technique. The more you fight the more you know. The more you know, the stronger you become.

When you go out to the street and you meet the people, do not become discouraged. This is the training ground where we grow our spirits. It is not for ourselves. Don't take success as your greatness. You should feel more burdened because the more you know the more you have to give. The person who loses their humbleness and preciousness is a small person. We must be a winner in God's eyes. The more we know the more we have to give. When you know that your own fragrance is beautiful and good, you don't need to shout it out to the world. You don't have to talk about it or show it to other people. They will realize it. That kind of tradition and foundation are what we have to set in this American church and for the rest of the world. That is what we have to do. We are young and we are strongly determined.

When I was young I often thought that I could help by being impartial but that was wrong. First I have to understand the truth and God's holistic view in order for me to go in one direction and toward one goal. That was given to me as my responsibility or else it would not have been a full passageway directly coming from God. It would have been only partial, getting caught up in the physical world. That is why we must now strongly build a foundation through repentance and tears.

What is the most precious thing that we can give to God and True Parents? It is our tears, crying from our hearts. The physical substance coming from you is your tears, crying from your hearts. How can we cry? How can we shed tears from our deepest heart? When you love something or someone, you are able to act naturally around them. When you love your wife, when you love people around you, do you love those people because it is your duty or your responsibility? I don't think so. That is not the way I treat my brothers. Because I love them, I want to do it naturally, automatically; without feeling burdened, without gratification for myself. That is why we truly have to cry. I often cry. That is the only time I can find peace, and I become stronger and stronger. I am saying this emphatically because it is crucial. If we love our Father and our God how can we not cry? How can we not take it seriously? This is very important.

What can you provide to the Blessed Children, your own children? Your original heart. It is that kind of heart and understanding and true foundation of endless love that you can give. It is the only thing you can show Father's children and the world. Many people through history tried to prove their goodness to the world but none of that was sustainable.

Of course many people are smarter than I, have a higher IQ than I and are stronger than I, but I do not care; I want to love God the most. When I love God the most, I can love you the most. When I love God, I love everything about God. What is God? God is everything. How can I say that I love God, but I don't love you, I don't love this? Nothing belongs to Satan. Satan should not be able to claim anything. That is my determination.

On this occasion, even if I helped you a little bit, that brings me the greatest joy. I do not just want happiness at this moment. I want you to be happy forever. I want God to be happy forever. That is important, important for us. We are the voices of Father and God so we must truly be prepared and understand. Then we can smile. I am sure that your smile will travel a hundred times farther and be that much stronger.

I know and have confidence that we can accomplish this because I see Blessed Children around me. I am always with them, spending time with them. I have hope because they by hard to find value in themselves. That is the greatest thing. Only in that desire can God dwell in their hearts. They are always sacrificing themselves, denying the physical world. That is why we must deny ourselves; that is the only way we can grow.

You must understand that many of you have been in the church ten years and you have grown that much. You have grown spiritually, but from now you should start over again. You should cling to that spark that you had when you first joined the church. How can you lose it? Many people I see have lost it. They are struggling and have lost their vision, lost meaning. How can you blame someone else for something that you had but then you lost? Of course, Satan is always out there; trying to take and claim you through the mistakes of others, sometimes through mistakes of our leaders. Does that give you the right to deny and isolate yourself from them? If Father were like that, how could he love you and the world? If God were like that, how could we exist in the first place?

I truly thank you for sticking it out this long. In a way, we are the most selfish people in the world, because we want to be the greatest people in eternity. We are willing to risk death, for eternity. If we are true men and women, we want to touch the greatest thing. Don't lose that, ever. We may be selfish but that is okay. I don't think God is going to hate you for that, but we must be worthy. That is our responsibility.

With that determination, I don't think anything is impossible; we can break through any barrier. The tip of an arrow is the hardest part. Let that be CARP -- close together and united. This CARP movement is crucial. We are guiding the future. When we think of this, we must thank God. He provided for us to be here. We are building the future. That is a greatness we can be proud of. I know that if we unite, we can make Father very happy. Let us make Father happy! He has suffered enough.

Conversation with Hyo Jin Nim Part II

Angelika Selle and Susan Fegley Osmond
August 26, 1984
East Garden

Question: Recently you were coordinator of the 21-day workshop for blessed children. What is your approach to leadership?

Hyo Jin Nim: When I look at church members, I know that they are suffering. The church needs the right leadership -- leaders who totally understand Father's heart, without any misunderstanding. It's like a book; you have to understand the whole thing. If you have a 500-page book and you read 100 pages, you might feel that you got the whole essence, but you can't be sure. How can you give something to other people for their well-being that you are not sure of yourself? How can you advise them?

And we are talking about the restoration -- not a book, not just a simple thought or a simple state of mind. How can we take this lightly? I am amazed sometimes by some people who take it lightly. I surely believe they need to open up. They're young, they're adolescent. They think they are somebody, but in my eyes, they are young kids. Many people have to repent.

For example, I can beat up almost anybody physically. I know I can do it. But some people think like that even though they cannot do it. I went to martial arts contests and I was number one. I mean, that credits me to be somebody who can beat up everybody. But I don't like to think like that. I try not to think like that even about a person who does think like that. When somebody touches me in a way I don't like I say to myself, he doesn't know, he is young. I can always punch him, but it's much harder to overcome, to let him go and pass by. Just because someone is a black belt who feels bold and proud and sticks his shoulders up, sorry, but should I bow down to you? We have to have leaders who understand that. Just because they feel they have something more than other people doesn't mean they have it. Don't take pride in yourself; take pride in others. Give them pride. You arc the fertilizer for the soil that has been infertile. But if the fertilizer doesn't want to fertilize the barren ground because of its pride, what good is it?

When the world is suffering from lack of food, develop the barren land. You have to do that. I tell the blessed children: Just love even one single thing. I hang around with them and, while I see much that is wrong, I try to see the good. Many are still adolescents, and so, many things go wrong, but it will take time for them to understand. I open myself up to them. Sometimes when others make a mistake I quickly bow my head and don't say anything, letting them realize on their awn what is wrong. I don't use forcefulness or make them suffer and struggle inside. I try to avoid that all the time.

When there is something to be fixed. I try to tell them in a way they would really understand, never raising myself up, because I realize it. I try to be a part of the person I am talking to: I once was like you, and I went through this kind of path, these kinds of things, and I felt. This is right. What do you think? For your sake I tell you follow that. I really sincerely hope you will follow that.

I don't ask to be respected, I do not do things to gain respect or authority. Why do I need that? I know who I am. Why should I want to be respected? I don't do it for that reason; I do it for you. So you can go out and help other people just like you. I always say to them: Hey, I am not saying this for myself, I am saying this for your sake. You can go out and earn respect from other people. I want you to earn respect from other people. That's why I tell you this. You have to have pride in yourself because you are a Unification Church member, you are a blessed child. I have pride in myself because I am True Parents' child, the son of Father. You have to have pride in who you are. You have to go on speaking with a true voice. Once you do that, I am helping you.

The only thing I am doing is helping you to be better, to gain more respect, to gain the respect of generations to come, to be a hero in your family tree. Is that bad of me? Am I doing the wrong thing to you?

Even when I tell people to do things, I try never do it to make myself greater. I am a very ungreedy person. In my Kingdom of Heaven, I would want to have just a little stone shack by a cliff overlooking the ocean. I don't like all those synthetic-fiber, plastic houses; I like natural houses I love rock and wood houses. I'd make a fireplace and hunt for my own food. I am a very simple man. The whole sky is my roof, the forest is my house. What more do I need than some place to sleep, protected from the rain and all those natural things that can sometimes weaken me.

What I want is something that lasts forever. I don't look for something that is glorious for only a moment, because then I would be just a shooting star hero. I don't want to be that. I would rather be a simple, humble man and last forever, than be strong and bold and live for a second. I would rather be a simple man. That's what I believe in. I am sure God does not disagree. He built all this for us! You don't have to try to claim it for yourself.

Question: How can members come to understand Father?

Hyo Jin Nim: For me to really see Father is not to evaluate him as a resource that lives in this physical world right now. I never try to compare my father's thought to the kind of concepts I grew up with in the world -- concepts that I am attached to or that I can easily relate to. I try to avoid this.

First I try to get a glance of the whole, but it has more meaning than you can comprehend readily. How can you tell a depth of a thousand feet when you are only used to a certain level? You do it step by step.

We are talking about the whole thing, the world's future. If you can understand that in a moment, I congratulate you. I mean, even schoolwork is hard to understand. Even solutions to mathematical problems don't come out perfect just like that. It takes a long time to find the solution. But the path of the future of the world! If you really try to think about it, to really understand it, you have to take it step by step.

First understand yourself before you really try to understand Father's vision. Try to realize where you stand, in this church, in your life, in your own vision, in Father's vision. You have to ask yourself that question before you ask yourself how you are going to understand the restoration of the world. How can you give yourself a perfectly good answer if you don't know yourself? Think about that. That's what I believe.

Question: How do you learn where you stand?

Hyo Jin Nim: For example, even within my family there are many quarrels. Sometimes those fights are over nothing. They try to find out who is right and who is wrong. And I see that if I listen to one side it makes sense; if I listen to the other, it makes sense too. How can I decide? I spend time with my brothers and sisters. I play a very important role in this family. Many, many times my brothers and sisters are confused about what they see in reality, even in relationships between members. And because I have stepped a little ahead of them, I can tell from my experiences how to be a better person in Father's eyes.

I can help them right now by understanding Father, and by understanding where I stand with my brothers and sisters, guiding them to the pathway Father wants them to take. That's what he wants me to do at this moment. Because even though I am worried about the world situation, I can do nothing about it now. What can I do? Right now, this is what I am doing.

It's the same principle for you. Let's say you're on a fundraising team that goes around with ten people. Find yourself first: okay, I have this kind of character to show to God, this kind of character to be proud of. At that moment you stop. That's your mission. Show that character to the other people. That's give and take. And other people too, if you find some good in them, or if they find some good in themselves, stop at that moment. Take whatever level other people give you, stop expecting more, and try to assure other people. Not in an arrogant way, but in a humble way. What is humbleness? Always bowing, always agreeing on things? Being humble, I believe, is to be true for God. Not for one's own benefit: for God's benefit, for another's benefit. I am trying to do something according to the way God looks at it, the ways of God's heart. That is humbleness.

Let's say the leader drives the van too fast and scares the sisters. And I say to him: "Sir, I know it is very frustrating to drive all day, and you're trying to get rid of that frustration by driving as if on a freeway.... We don't mind if you do that on a straight road, but please, try to avoid that on a mountain road." In a way I'm saying I understand where you stand, but please try to understand us in this kind of way. That's give and take, too. You understand him, but you are also explaining your feelings freely. Everybody is going to benefit. Then everybody is safe and they don't have to endure the kind of fright they had from going at that speed. This is just an example I am giving you. I am sure a lot of things like that happen in fundraising, witnessing, and in many other situations. You have to really be keen. You have to really study. Father is not just sending you out there to waste your time.

Let's say you see a really mean-looking guy standing in the corner. You go up to him and say: "Hey, man, you look like hell. Why don't you change? You are good. You are God's child. You've got to change right away.– You say it for his benefit, but do you think he will gain from that? He wants to kill you. You can feel it inside.

But instead try going up to him, dressed like him, and say, "Hey, man, how are you doing?" and become friends with him. Not to agree with what he believes, just to achieve your means -- to change his view, help him. I changed myself first; gave first that's giving at that moment. Giving is not just a material thing or just giving your words or giving your heart. Sometimes by even doing something that you don't believe in, you change for the better. Make a blueprint in your mind, a strategy. First, I have to win his heart. How can I do that? By being receptive to him, I'd wear my dungarees and cut-off sleeves. I would go to him and hang around with him for a while; then I'd say to him, "Hey, man, can I be friends with you? You know I am okay. You know where I am coming from. Listen to me, hear me out. I feel there is more to it; I feel there is more to a man than showing your masculinity. What do you think, man? Let's try to share something more positive. You have been living like this for all your life. Don't you think that now is the time to change for the better?"

Why don't we do that? Why don't we do that? That's what Father means by give and take. You can always progress.

You cannot have hard feelings, you cannot have hate, if you are willing to sacrifice yourself to come to the other person's level. Always embrace. That way you can always win. I had those kinds of friends. One kid was the worst kind of person you can think of: a drug-oriented, sex-crazed maniac. But I fought with him side by side. I fought for him. He changed. To my words, he'll listen. Because I am his life savior; in a physical way I saved him.

There may be some people in the world who don't know the meaning of a life savior. Maybe some people out there do. I am sure there are some people who really are bad, but I am talking about people who have the potential to be on God's side but right at this moment are lost in the dump. I am sure that maybe less than one percent of humanity is completely dark. The cruel people who hate and kill people and children--even those people we have to change. We have to try and do it if we can.

Question: Not many of us members know the True Family very well. Hyo Jin Nim, could you please characterize, from your point of view, your brothers and sisters?

Hyo Jin Nim: Ye Jin and I don't really agree with each other so much. She is very, very strong. It's amazing. If she were a brother about my age in this position, we'd never get along. But because she's a woman, I feel protective toward her.

I have to understand her. We sometimes have a different point of view, and that puts me on the line to see both sides, to make a more clear judgment -- to reach a more clear answer. She helps me in many ways. She does not tell me directly, but just by being with her, and sometimes by arguing with her, she expands my direction and my ideas. "Well, ' some people think like this..." Wow! Ye Jin thinks of points that I didn't even think of. That is good.

She is very strong, but there is more fragrance of love than there would be with an older brother. If I had an older brother, maybe he would be too rough and tough, too sharp and overbearing, but because Ye Jin rounds off the corners I really respect her. She does not know that, but I do respect her.

In Jin is very, very emotional, very heartistic, pure, and good: but sometimes she is stubborn. That is good. Because she is so emotional and heartistic she is very sensitive to everything that goes on in the church. If you look at her while she is going around speaking, you can see she picks things up right away because she is so sensitive. That is another greatness.

Heung Jin, oh, he was a man! I was proud of my brother! I always brag about my brother. I am physically strong -- a kind of horse -- but he is more broadened than I am in his feelings for what he believes in. He gives his life. Unto his life he'll do what he believes in.

He loved his fellow man. He loved the people around him. He was always trying to think of others before himself. Let's say he was hungry and eating a hamburger. If some other kids came he would say, "Hey, do you want it?" That's pretty hard to say. When you are hungry that's pretty hard to say. When you want something for a long time and then you have it, it's hard to give it away, but he does. I love that. To that I bow my head, I humble myself to him. I know he is my younger brother, but still in that sense I need to learn. That is a great man, a true man.

Un Jin is very diplomatic, in a way, and very humble. Sometimes too humble. She always puts herself down. She knows her potential, and she knows her limit. Still, she likes to always humble herself. She does not say much, even though she may feel something. She doesn't like to discuss things with other people, even suffering. She wants to hold it inside herself, because she feels that she might hurt other people. She might make them struggle in their minds -- burden them -- so she holds herself back. That is a greatness, too.

Most people want to get out their frustration and anger, trying to justify their actions. She doesn't want to do that. She always holds herself back. She is always quiet. I need to learn that.

Hyun Jin is very, very witty. He can make me laugh when I am in the most anguished state, but he also respects me. He will give unto his life when he believes in something or when he respects somebody. He will be a great helper to Father. All my brothers are manly. They cannot stand injustice or wrong. But when Hyun Jin finds someone who has more of a certain quality than he does, he is the kind of person who stops at that moment and humbles himself. He becomes quiet and really tries to clear his mind, clearing away even the smallest thought that maybe in some way he is better than that person. In that kind of way he is purifying his mind for what he believes in, for the truth. He purifies his mind. That takes a great man.

Kook Jin is very, very like a heavenly judge. He likes to make everything perfect. It has to be perfectly right according to the Principle. He doesn't try to just do what he thinks is right, but he judges it according to the Principle. He is also very lovable -- almost like a teddy bear. The tone of his voice is always like an echo from his heart. It rings out with truth. It's not just solid, not just penetrating. It's not sharp in a judgmental way, but it really rings. Even sometimes he judges me, but he makes it sound so good, so understanding, so reasonable. That is another gift. When most people judge, they are sharp; but with Kook Jin it rings from his heart. That's different, totally different. That is a beautiful person.

Kwon Jin is very diplomatic in a way, too. Maybe he learned that because he has a lot of brothers and sisters, but it's his heart. He does not say even little things like, "Hyo Jin, can you buy me this?" or "Can you take me there?" But he will say, "Hey, Hyo Jin, do you have time? What are you doing today? Do you have plans to go out? Are you going in this direction?" And I say, "Why do you ask me?" "Oh, I am just wondering." "Well, I am going to get some guitar strings. Yes, I am going in that direction." "Can I go with you?" He will not come to the point, not even then. As I go along, and l go there to buy it, on the way back he will say (before we get to that place), "Hyo Jin, do you like video games?" I say, "Why?" "Well, I am just wondering." And he says, "Well, there is a video game place over here, a video arcade. Do you want to go? There is one really gad game there. It's really fun. You can shoot all those missiles and stuff." And he tries to talk to me about what I like.

He is extremely sensitive and keen, but also very careful. He always subtly directs me to where he wants me to go. That is another talent.

In the little ones, their characters haven't really shown up that much, because they haven't been going out mingling with friends or other people. Sun Jin's character hasn't fully shown itself yet. She is only seven years old, but she is very pleasant to be with. Some kids that age are very, very rude and only want to do things their own way. I have always been studying the bigger ones -- trying to be with them, to understand them, and to help them. I know them, but young girls... Sun Jin is very pleasant to be with. She always makes oppa -- big brother -- happy. Makes me proud of her. It's good to have a sister like that.

She is very plump right now and real cute. But that's just external. The kind of smile she gives me is not just made up. She smiles from her heart. I really feel that.

Young Jin is a very knowledgeable person; very, very philosophical.

Hyung Jin will be like a saint -- very loving and caring. You can see it in his face. He is always calm. A little boy's face: peaceful.

Yeon Jin will be the little one to stand up for the older ones. Sometimes some kind of a mediator is needed to avoid the gap between myself and her generation or level. When she grows up she will bridge that gap. She has a kind of steady, careful, but very penetrating, piercing character.

Jeung Jin will be the unity of our family. She'll bring happiness to our family, with the kind of cute things that she does, because she is the youngest one. Her character is like that; she is always trying to make people joyful. She always calls me (Hyo Jin Nim imitates in a high-pitched voice) Cho chug oppa -- first brother. Even though I am grumpy because I am thinking too much, she always clears that away.

Jin Whi has a very noble personality. Even though he feels things inside, things other people don't understand, he will hold them in until other people realize that that is the right step.

He has the right personality for the husband of Father's first daughter. He embraces everybody. That's the only way he could gain respect from our family. If he were a strong, bold, arrogant person, he couldn't make it in this family.

Jin Sung, I love him very much, not just because he is my friend, but because of the kind of person he is. He is very smart. He is sharp, but it takes a real man to turn this sharpness into humbleness. But he is like that. He is a very caring person -- a very serving person. That kind of person is perfect for In Jin because she is heartistic and emotional. She needs a man who wants to serve and help her, love her and let her talent and natural goodness blossom. Father picked the best one, I think. I was for it, too. Father asked me, "Who do you think out of these three men?" I picked Jin Sung. They are all my good friends. I knew them all very well, but Jin Sung is the best for In Jin.

Hoon Sook is a very committed person. She is very beautiful and artistic inside. It's very hard to cling onto a spiritual marriage. She can do that. She has a will. She might look fragile, but she's really a strong person who can love deeply; she is one who can really appreciate beauty with the utmost love. And that is the most beautiful thing -- loving somebody in spirit. What higher love is there? She doesn't just understand it; she can carry it out. That's why sometimes she is not so open, but very quiet -- that quietness is needed, so I don't say anything to her. She has so much to carry out; other people have to understand.

My wife, Nan Sook, is good for me. That's all I can say. I don't want to brag about her -- she is my wife. She is perfect for me. Let me say that not many girls can be good for me because I expect very much. She puts me in my place; as a husband, as Father's blessed child. She is perfect for me.
