The Thought of Jesus

Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han circa 1983

Religious people make other people happy by serving them. This is the way of goodness. Jesus had an awesome thought system. Jesus prayed to God for the Roman soldiers, the enemies who tried to kill him by piercing him with their spears. All things in creation were moved to tears by such a victorious Jesus from the depth of their beings; and they praised his eternal victory. This moment was the time of such praises. He was and is so wonderful.

Those who are thirty years old, please raise your hand! Jesus was young, with no children, not even married. He was a man who always was on the run. He owned no valuables. Whatever villages he visited, no one even offered him breakfast. The Bible says, "When he wanted to eat figs but the tree had no fruit. He cursed the fig tree and it withered away." Jesus lived a miserable life. The Bible described, "A fox has a hole, a bird has a nest, but the son of man has no place to lay his head." It is really sad. But that word does not fully describe his sorrow; Jesus was truly a miserable man. He had no friend. Nor, did he have his parents behind him. He had nothing except only indescribable loneliness. Do you know a famous haiku1 by Sihei Hayashi2? He expressed his feeling of loneliness (of not having his parents or family) in this haiku (and concludes saying), "Neither wants to die nor to live." But, I am not saying that Hayashi was a good man. He was far from that. But, something was different about Jesus.

Under such a miserable situation, Jesus went down the path of death. No one recognized him. No nation recognized him. Even his disciples did not realize who he was. Then, how did Jesus become the founding father of the worldwide democratic nations? It is because God was with him. Without God it would have, absolutely, never happened.

Therefore, the righteous people followed the same path, which would endure throughout history and, which would be praised by later generations. By passing on this thought to the next generations, they embraced more people in the world; and expanded to the world as history progressed. This is the historical fact. Spiritual thoughts and religions of the four major cultural spheres make up the background of all the cultures of the world today.

Going beyond racism and nationalism, you must love citizens of the world more than Japanese citizens! The Unification Thought teaches you to do so. That is why I am teaching you -- you must love the Unification Church. Then, you must love the world more than the Unification Church. You must love the world more than Rev. Moon. This is my teaching.

Notes:

1 Haiku – A type of Japanese poem that was popularized in the 17th century.

2 Sihei Hayashi (1738-1793) – He was a visionary who challenged the Tokugawa (Shogun) Government into opening its eyes to the world and for developing the naval power to protect the nation. He printed and distributed his booklet outlining his position to the public to persuade mass opinion. Subsequently, he was forced into house arrest until his death. During the seclusion, it is said that he wrote and shared the famous "Haiku" that True Father mentioned in this speech. He expressed his loneliness and his anti-government sentiment in his "last Haiku" before his death in isolation. It is roughly translated, "I don't have my parents, children, or wife here, I don't even have my printing block nor money but I don't want to die."

The True Path of the Cross

Sun Myung Moon April 2011

Sun Myung Moon April 2011

Without shedding true tears, you cannot bring many others to true tears. Without shedding tears, you cannot really repent. You guys, think about this. If you really think about this, you don't need to complain saying, "I am tired, my feet hurt," because God knows about your situation better than yourself. However, there remains a deep reason why God has had to rely on those who are tired and exhausted and still had to give them His order. As you think of God's situation, you would feel sorry for Him. Enduring your fatigue and exhaustion, then you feel God's order deep inside you, you carry it out faithfully throughout night. Upon completing your task this way, when you lay down to rest, God will come to embrace you. This is real. In such time, you will experience this wonderful connection with God.

From this point of view, hardship itself isn't a bad thing. The cross you carry isn't bad. The true path of the cross will lead you to the true path of love. Parents walk willingly the path of the cross for they love their children. Isn't this right? So, the true path of the cross will lead you to the true path of love.

How many people can you truly love in your life with your physical body's life being so very short? That becomes your wealth. It becomes your worth! With this heart, how many people have you loved? If you obtain a heart to love every person regardless of their relative high position or low position in the world, you then can be qualified to stand before God. Without reaching such a heart, when you stand before God, He would ask you, "Why do you stand before Me?" For the one moment you stand before God, you must invest your entire life time to be qualified for the moment; you must move on for the moment. This is true. I questioned myself with what kind of qualification would I stand before God? Would I stand before Him with shame? Or would I stand with all the people rejoicing and praising, while God tells me, "Well done, thank you my son," with His happiest smile looking upon me?

So do you guys. Soon or later, you will go to the spirit world, right? You must end up there and you must be registered there. While you are living here, you are going through the procedure for the registration. You must do this throughout your entire lifetime. Especially, it is the case for all fallen people, right? You must complete your procedure to stand before God. If the content of your report is accepted, God will say to you, "It is good." Then you will pass. Therefore, in this period when your registration procedures are not completed, you have no time to relax. No matter how much commotion surrounding you while people are opposing your path, you should say proudly, you are too busy pursuing your life course. You must reach your destination before Sundown.

America in Crisis -- Answer to Watergate: Forgive, Love, Unite

Ever since I was sixteen years old, I have constantly encountered the presence of God. I have been able to share with the world numerous insights He has shown me.

I came to America upon receiving God’s revelation

On January 1, 1972, God spoke to me in my prayers. He told me to go to America and speak to the American people about hope and unity. In obedience to God’s call I came and began the Day of Hope tour. In 1972 I took this message to seven American cities. The current nationwide speaking tour began in New York’s Carnegie Hall on October 1, 1973, and will go to twenty-one American cities, declaring a message of hope and unity.

After speaking in New York, I spoke in Baltimore; Philadelphia; Boston; Washington, DC; New Orleans; Dallas; Tampa and Atlanta. The kind welcome I received in these great American cities deeply moved me. I am especially grateful to the mayors and other officials who responded by proclaiming “The Day of Hope and Unification” in their communities.

My travels in America have shown me a troubled land. The moral and spiritual decline is tragic and shocking. Many people are no longer proud to be Americans. The American nation seems mortally wounded in spirit and soul by the tragedy of Watergate. We are witnessing a crisis unprecedented in American history. The situation is very serious.

It is more than a political, social and economic crisis. It is a crisis of the human soul. This is not only the problem of the person in the White House; it is a crisis for all of us.

On November 10, 1973, I took two weeks out from my tour and returned to Korea. I used that time for prayer and meditation in a desperate search for an answer and new hope for America.

Today we hear so much about America’s troubles -- what is wrong and who is to blame, what can be done and what cannot be done. Vicious accusation is becoming a daily staple in the American diet. Hatred and bitterness are killing the human soul. Some people cry out, “Impeach the president!”

Opinion is divided, and the people talk on. Should the president remain in office? Should the president resign or be tried?

America’s crisis is God’s crisis

We were all witnesses to the assassination of America’s president, John F. Kennedy, in 1963. However today, without many realizing it, America is in the process of slowly killing her president once again.

A bullet killed Kennedy, and the nation united in a common feeling of sorrow and repentance.

This time the “bullet” of hatred and accusation is capable of destroying not only the president, but the nation with him. In a war of hatred, no one is the winner.

All thoughtful Americans feel grave concern for the future of their country. Some even believe America has been struck a fatal blow. However, at this critical moment in American history, it is disappointing and inexplicable that no one is asking, “What is the Will of God?” If America was conceived as “One Nation under God,” then the answer must come from Him. Have we stopped asking?

I bend my head and place my ear to hear the heartbeat of America. But I detect no one seeking the solution from above. We keep on criticizing, and the nation sinks; we criticize some more, and the nation falls even further, deep into greater peril. Now is the time for America to renew the faith expressed in her motto, “In God We Trust.” This is the founding spirit that makes America great and unique. God blessed America because of this spirit. Furthermore, America is fulfilling a vital role in God’s plan for the modern world. God is depending on America today. Therefore, the crisis for America is a crisis for God. An answer must come from above, from God, from the One who has the answer. I prayed to God earnestly, asking Him to reveal His message.

The answer came. The first word God spoke was, “Forgive.”

America must forgive. Whatever wrongs have been done, whatever mistakes are being made, America has a noble deed to perform: America must forgive. The Watergate affair is an error -- not only the error of a few men but the error of humanity, the error of the American people. The Lord’s Prayer says, “Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matt. 6:12) If we want God to forgive us, we have to forgive each other first.

The Watergate affair is not merely a test of the president. It is a test of America’s faith, of how this nation will stand before God in the midst of moral crisis. Can this nation, which was founded two hundred years ago on the foundation of Christian tradition, uphold that tradition today? Can this nation prove its generosity and mutual forgiveness? Can it love? This is the test for the American people. Long ago, the American settlers on the New England shores made many grave mistakes. But with their trust in God they came through many crises. They could then lead America to prosperity.

SunMyungMoon-731130b-2.png

Now is the moment we need forgiveness and love

The Bible speaks of the time the scribes and Pharisees tested Jesus. They brought him a woman to be stoned. She had been caught in the act of adultery. Mosaic Law demanded retributive justice. But Jesus’ message was forgiveness. “He stood up and said to them, ‘Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.’ - But when they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus looked up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again.’” (John 8:3-11) No one dared to cast the first stone!

Who among you will be the one to cast the first stone? This is no time to cast stones upon your leader. This is no time to cast stones upon one another.

I prayed specifically for President Richard Nixon. I asked God, “What shall we do with the person of Richard Nixon?” The answer came again. The second word God spoke to me was, “Love. It is your duty to love him.” We must love Richard Nixon. Jesus Christ loved even his enemies. Must you not love your president?

What do you do when a member of your family is in trouble? Do you criticize him and tear him apart? Of course not. You guide him. You comfort him. You love him unconditionally. You belong to the American family, and Richard Nixon is your brother. Will you not then love your brother? You must love the president of the United States.

This nation is God’s nation. The office of the president of the United States is, therefore, sacred. God inspires a man and then confirms him as president through the will of the people. The man lays his hands on the Word of God and is sworn in to office. At this time in history God has chosen Richard Nixon to be president of the United States of America. Therefore, God has the power and authority to dismiss him. Our duty, and this alone, is that we deeply seek God’s guidance in this matter and support the office itself. If God decides to dismiss this choice of His, let us have faith that He will speak.

I continued in prayer, and the third and last word God spoke to me was, “Unite.” America must unite.

Let us unite in the spirit of forgiveness. Unite in the spirit of love. Now is the time for national repentance. Love is the power to unite. America once knew how to come together to create a powerful nation for goodness upon the face of the earth. America is a beautiful land to behold, a nation of all nationalities, all races and all religions united together into one working whole. The nation’s source of power has been love and faith in God and in one another.

Crisis in America directly affects the fate of the world

The crisis in America today can be overcome. We must rekindle our faith in God and reunite ourselves in love. America’s destiny is inseparable from the destiny of the world. America’s well-being affects the plan of God. God chose this nation as His champion in His modern-day dispensation. With the bicentennial celebration only a few years away, God is testing America through the Watergate problem. America must demonstrate unity in love and forgiveness. Let us renew our faith in God, for this has been the well-spring of America’s power. America must live the Will of God. She has no alternative.

Who am I to say this to the American people? I am not even a citizen of the United States. I am a Korean, a guest.

However, I do this because I love America as much as my own country. This is a country God loves. And I love God and He is our Father in heaven.

Wherever God my Father dwells, there is my country. Indeed, the Father’s country is also the son’s. America belongs to those who love it most. I am as concerned for America’s well-being as for my own. This is the foundation of my courage to speak out on this issue.

Furthermore, I waited. I waited a long time. I anticipated that an American spiritual leader or evangelist would rally America around God to rise above the Watergate affair at this stormy and depressing time.

However, there has been no American spiritual leader speaking out for unity. I heard no articulate voice in the wilderness crying out to Americans. By this time, God spoke to me again, “Fear not! Remember Jonah in Nineveh. Speak out!” So I obeyed.

And this is why I am doing this.

SunMyungMoon-731130b-3.png

We will pray for America

As the founder of the international Unification Church, I have declared the next forty days, starting on December 1, 1973, as a period of prayer and fasting by our members throughout the world.

In this we are determined to awaken this nation to its national emergency. America must unite in her Christian tradition of love and forgiveness in the face of the grave crisis created by the Watergate affair. We hereby launch this National Prayer and Fast for the Watergate Crisis as a way to heal and unite this nation.

This is indeed a day of dismay and moral crisis. Yet this is also a great opportunity for America, an opportunity in which the American people can demonstrate America’s true greatness in faith and courage. Historically, great peoples have proved their greatness not during normal situations but in crises.

This is the time the American people must act as a great people who put their trust in God. Then this day will become a day of new hope and unity.

“In God We Trust.” In these four words lie America’s key to survival and prosperity. America must live the Will of God -- and God’s command at this crossroads in American history is, “Forgive, Love and Unite!”

Dear Rev. Moon:

What a happy coincidence - on the final day of my receiving the Los Angeles Times - which I cancelled because of its constant magnifying hatreds and vilification of our President, there is your glorious call for "Forgive, Love, Unite."

As a Christian Scientist, this, of course, has been my constant prayer. I have written each member of the Watergate Committee and my senators and congressmen, saying, "Who among you is without sin- let him cast the first stone." Our United States is a generous, good country but forces of evil from within -- re-determined to destroy and the only way it. can be done is through a breakdown in morals, the family, church, and constant rabble-rousing of hatred. "One with God is a majority" and I know the one God is the only power- now and forever. Bless you, and let us unite as children of God to heal the wounded spirit of this great country.

Respectfully,

Jane McPhee

Dear Rev. Moon,

Please excuse this handwritten letter which I am writing at the breakfast table after reading your statement on Watergate which appeared this morning on page 28 of the S. F. Chronicle. You have kindled a fire which I hope will explode and will spread across our nation with great speed. Your statement should be on the lips of every speaker in this country whether he be preacher or politician. I congratulate you for this wonderful message. I will do all that I can to promote your theme to Forgive, Love, and Unite.

Sincerely,

Herber C. Leney, Mayor

Dear Mr. Moon,

I have heard much of you and agree with a united religion.... I feel a change is taking place in the world. A new age is about to dawn and I am not quite sure what shape this new age will take. I like your approach. In the full page ad in the Tampa Tribune, my heart was warmed by what you wrote so I sent in the coupon asking more on this movement. One thing please consider. I can forgive, I can pray and will do so, but has Mr. Nixon asked forgiveness? Has he confessed any wrong? He has stated all along he has done no wrong. One word goes before forgive: repentance. In the Old Testament cities and nations repented. I have sinned and I have asked forgiveness; shouldn't Mr. Nixon do the same?

Sincerely yours,

Dear Rev. Moon,

My husband and I were at the Atlanta airport on our way to Scotland on Nov. 9th the day 'you left for Korea. I had been reading about you in our papers and we were approached and asked to buy tickets-we did but were unable to attend. I have just finished reading your "Watergate Declaration" in our Constitution and my husband and I want to say thank you from our hearts to you for coming "in the name of Jesus" to our America. We truly must "forgive", love each other unconditionally as God loves us and unite in Jesus in these end days. How beautiful that God has touched you and called you to preach His Word! We will be lifting you up before His mighty throne. Jesus has transformed both of us and we stand ready to be used of The Lord in any way He chooses. My husband is a layman but truly has been chosen by God to be an evangelist. We love Jesus-He is real to us and we feel very humble to be a part of His Church. Thank you again for the burden you have on your heart for America. God has placed it there and He will bear it for you! Eagerly waiting for our Precious Lord's return!

In Christ's Love,

Dear Rev. Moon,

There was an American Methodist preacher by the name of Moon from Media, Pennsylvania, when I joined the church in about 1912. I am writing to you to compliment you for your earnest and sincere actions and your desire to bring understanding and progress to our country. Billy Graham was on TV in this vicinity but he was on too late for me and the channel was not working on my set. He was supposed to talk about problems of our country but I didn't hear him. My husband who passed away over 3 years ago said there would be a man from another country who would bring peace and unity to the world. I hope it will be you. This is the first call for people to unite and work for the progress of our country. I'll try to pray for your goals but although I am retired I try to keep busy and not let my thoughts get the better of me, so I'm trying to write when not otherwise engaged. I'm a former adult education teacher preparing aliens for naturalization, so I am interested in your life and devoted efforts to this great cause. When you have the qualifications, 5 year residence in this country, I'll be glad to send you needed material to study, but you show a greater understanding of our country than some native-born Americans.

Dear Rev. Moon,

I just read this morning in the Tampa Tribune for Thursday, November 30, 1973, the "Statement by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon on America in Crisis: Answer to Watergate, Forgive, Love, Unite." You have expressed my sentiments exactly. I quote the following: You said, "All thinking American people feel grave concern for the future of their country. Some even believe America has been struck a fatal blow. However, at this critical moment in American history, it is disappointing and strange that no one is asking, "What is the will of God?" If America was conceived as "One Nation under God," then the answer must come from Him. Have we stopped asking?" At this time let me quote a letter which I wrote from my address in Dundee to the "Winter Haven Daily News Chief. 650 6th St., S. W., Winter Haven, Fla. 33880." I mailed it with an article I wrote on Nov. 7, 1973, and requested a receipt. The receipt was mailed back to me the next day, Nov. 8, 1973, so I know they received it, but I have not heard from them since. I said to them,

"Dear Sirs:

"The Bank advised me to contact you about the publication of an article I wrote for all the people of the United States of America." It is for every citizen that professes to love the United States of America from the President down, and the least up, all who want a true and lasting Peace for our Nation and the world, starting with our generation. "The Saviour said, 'If a Kingdom (or any nation) be divided against itself, that Kingdom (or nation) cannot stand.' (Mark 3:24-25.) "Our Nation is divided against itself today, because the Household of Faith is divided against itself in the United States of America, where all people are free to think for themselves and to choose whom they will serve- their Creator, or Satan who has deceived the whole world. The Saviour said, 'God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.' (John 4:24.) 'He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is Love.' (I John 4:8.) "This Watergate scandal has proved that we are divided against ourselves and do not know our Creator, and except we repent, as a Nation we will perish. This is why I have written the article "Our Time". Our President is no worse than all of the people, neither is he any better except he repent. We all most forgive as we would be forgiven. So let us all repent and forgive each other freely."

I have written to churches, evangelists, preachers and pastors, but they love their idols of wind and confusion more than they do the Truth and their Creator.

Sincerely your Brother in Hope,

Isaac N. Cramer

Modern Science and Our View of Moral Values

Second International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences

Photo date and location unknown

Photo date and location unknown

Allow me to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on the very successful Second International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences, which has convened eminent scientists of our contemporary age. I am greatly honored to have the opportunity to make some brief remarks at the close of this conference held in the Orient's most modern city, Tokyo, Japan.

First of all, my deepest admiration and gratitude go to the eminent professors of the executive committee who rendered such painstaking efforts to hold this conference and make it a success. Please allow me to express my profound respect and appreciation to this committee, who decided to adopt the subject, "Modern Science and Moral Values," as the theme of the conference, and especially to the professors who in response to the invitation have deeply researched the respective topics that have been brought forth and discussed with enthusiasm.

The common welfare of humanity and the way of science

Once again, I want to extend my deepest congratulations to and appreciation of the participants in this epochal conference. I am going to express my views regarding the theme under the topic, "Modern Science and Our View of Moral Values." I suppose that the conference adopted and dealt with the question of science and moral values because the situation in today's society urgently demands that we address such issues, which, I am sure, have been thoroughly discussed here. I am not alone in the awareness that modern science now shows undesirable side effects, even though, so far, it has contributed tremendously to the welfare of humankind with unceasing and exceptional discoveries and innovations. Men and women of today are losing their subjectivity concerning science and technology. It looks as though the agents of the rapidly accelerating scientific discoveries and its myriad applications are gradually losing the ability to control and guide their scientific work with a universal ethic and pertinent moral values. If this situation persists, it could lead to undesirable and destructive consequences and circumstances in the near future, which will be difficult for us to remedy. I will explain the situation of how our subjectivity has been lost.

Science, it seems, is apt to allow scientists to exclude the questions of ethics and moral values in the process of scientific development. During the history of science, scientific fields have gradually split into sub-disciplines, each becoming more and more specialized. Today, science has become increasingly more analytical and materialistic, utterly ignoring the questions of ethics and moral values. The influence of our existential subjectivity over science seems to have weakened and even evaporated. I am sure that ultimately the most important among the many possible motivations for scientific research is the desire to realize humanity's common welfare, prosperity and peace.

Considering the enormous progress of science and technology, we originally expected and anticipated that it would facilitate the arrival of the common welfare and happiness of humanity, that it would enhance our subjective position over our natural as well as sociological, economic and political environments. On the contrary, even though scientific achievements so far have focused on improving and developing the environment and on offering new technologies for living, our original desire for science to achieve the welfare, prosperity and peace of humanity is being sidelined and even undermined. Our original desire is for science to achieve the welfare of humanity, which is the subject partner. Although scientific achievements have improved and developed the environment, which is the object partner, science has not taken responsibility for the negative outcomes disturbing the spiritual, mental and physical well-being of individuals, families, societies and nations, and our natural environment. This misalignment and discrepancy between our desire and our scientific and technological achievements finally has caused the weakening and even loss of our subject position concerning the scientific and technological enterprise.

However, it is desirable for science to deal with both the ethical questions arising from our human subjective nature as well as objective problems, such as the improvement of the environment and the development of new technologies for living. I fervently call on all scientists to develop their respective fields on the basis of a solid ethical view of moral values, thus exalting human dignity by adopting a spiritual and unifying methodology as well as a materialistic and analytical one. If we had focused the underpinnings of science on human dignity, the formidable problems of environmental pollution could have been prevented. Here arises the question of human beings' original image, that is, the design of our human nature.

The establishment of a standard of value

My view is that our original design is intended to achieve the harmonious oneness between mind and body. The original human being was supposed to be a being of unity and harmony between his or her spirit and body centered on the purpose of goodness. I view the original purpose of science as embodying the aspirations of both aspects of our existence, spirit and body. This means that such a unified science also incorporates the fields of ethics and moral values.

It may be appropriate to request of science to synthesize rationality and spirituality, to call for a commitment of science to actively pursue the betterment of the world's cultures and peoples. However, in order to integrate ethics and moral values into science, the question of what needs to be the standard of value arises. In general, the standard of value has changed according to historical age and environment. There is a vast difference between the standard of value in ancient times and that of the contemporary age. Also, the standard of value in the Orient differs from that of the Occident. Therefore, to establish a true standard of value for the common benefit and welfare of all humankind, we can only set up as the standard a universal and absolute element that can apply at any time and any place.

The establishment of this absolute standard signifies the establishment of a new view of ethics and moral values. The essence of this absolute standard must be the love that forms the basis of the ethics of the family system. True love in the ethical relationship of the family is an absolute love, agape love, which emits heartwarming joy to all humankind just as the sun emits its light to all creation. This love alone has never changed throughout history, whether in the East or the West. At this point we can think of the one Absolute Being as the one subject of this absolute love. I believe it is most desirable for this Absolute Being to become the ultimate standard of the new view of value.

This Absolute Being is not a conceptual being but is a substantial entity who has revealed Himself throughout human history. We know that in history, many sages and saints, including many religious leaders, have appeared at different times and in different places. Without exception, they appealed to the human conscience and heart, urging the practice of love. When men and women responded and followed their teachings, the peoples and nations enjoyed peace and prosperity; when men and women were obstinate, the nations fell into confusion or decline. Even today the whole of humankind is in confusion and chaos waiting either consciously or unconsciously for the appearance of modern sages and saints to make this love real. Considering all these facts, we can conclude that history has taken a direction of development to realize this love. Therefore, we can only recognize that there has been one central axis functioning in history, consciously and in a certain direction.

I want to identify this substantial being who has played the role of the axis as the Absolute Being. We can see that behind the scenes of human history, this Absolute Being has planned to establish the world of moral values by actualizing love through saints, righteous people and conscientious leaders. Accordingly, my conclusion is that if the whole of humankind will accept this Absolute Being as the axis of human history, the world of moral values will be realized without difficulty.

Finally, I extend to you my heartfelt wishes that the valuable presentations of your research and discussions at this conference will produce epochal results that contribute to the true peace and prosperity of humankind.

Thank you very much.
