Letter To Hustler Magazine About Rev. Moon

by Justin Ignizio

Editor's Note: Mr. Ignizio is an inmate at the Danbury prison. He wrote the above letter in response to an article on Father and the Unification Church in Hustler magazine, which is a pornographic publication. This letter is published With Mr. Ignizio's permission.

I am both an avid reader of Hustler and an inmate at Danbury prison. I was rather amused by the article in your magazine on my fellow inmate Reverend Moon. It seems to me and also to a lot of my fellow inmates (I asked them) that if the article was meant to portray the Reverend in a bad light, it missed the mark by a mile.

Other than the rather thin claims of Miss Turner and the obvious effort at hysterical sleaze reporting by Jim Forrest, you show that Moon stands for everything that we in this country say we hope to convey to our children, namely, no premarital sex, no drugs, anti-communism, love of wife, and devotion to family. As for the millions of people in his church walking around hypnotized, I wonder why you could only come up with one who appears to be in that condition'?

I also wonder why Moon is the only religious ''bad guy,'' when I see nuns in the streets and subways begging (before I came in here), and I can't go to mass without seeing them passing a collection plate. I also see Reverend Falwell, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swaggert, Robert Schuller, and all the other religious ''hustlers" raking in millions, driving in limos, flying in their private jets, and living high on the hog.

And unless I am sadly mistaken or have forgotten my history, I thought that was what this country was all about: freedom of speech, religious freedom, freedom to worship any God in any way we chose. Larry Flynt, of all people, should certainly know at this point about oppression and the infliction of certain men's wills and laws on other "free'' people.

Lastly, let me say this. I work side by side with the "Rev'' in the kitchen and have seen him do all that has been asked of him, smiling and without complaint (I wish I could say the same of all the other inmates here), including washing toilets and mopping floors. He never puts on any airs and is just one of the guys. I have my visits on the same days as the Reverend and see him to be a devoted husband, and a loved and loving father. Maybe this country wouldn't be in the sad shape it is in if we had more men like Reverend Moon around.

Human beings: temples for God to indwell

What would have happened had our first ancestors Adam and Eve not fallen? They would have attained oneness with God and stood in the same position as Him, inheriting and experiencing His joy in His great work of creation. Such would have been the relationship formed between God and humankind. Original, unfallen human beings would have become His temples. (54-64, 1972.3.11)

Adam and Eve were God's son and daughter; at the same time, they were also His temples. Once they had matured, that is, once the temple had been built completely, He intended to dwell in them. Then, when the fully matured Adam and Eve performed the ceremony of holy matrimony, centering on God, they would have become as one with Him. He would then have become the internal God, and human beings would have become His external form with substantial bodies.

In 1 Corinthians 3:16 it is written, "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?" If those who are saved by faith can become God's temples, then surely Adam and Eve, in the position of the originally intended true ancestors of humanity, should have become His temples. (54- 139, 1972.3.22)

Even though God is our Father and we His children, it still feels like a relationship in which He is superior and we are inferior. At such times, what would be our thinking? We have this desire in our hearts that cries out to Him, "Father, let me have Your place for just once. I want to sit in Your place!" If He were to answer this cry with, "No, you scoundrel, I won't allow it!" then we would be crushed. Hence, He cannot answer thus. On the contrary, He knows we have such a desire in our hearts and so encourages us with words like "Of course, by all means!" and gives up His place for us. He wants us to occupy His place while He vacates it to enter our hearts and indwell us as His temples. (54-89, 1972.3.20)

In the Bible it is written, "You are God's temple." What do these words mean? No one has succeeded in interpreting these words. They are great words. That is because, no matter how great God is, we are given the right to inherit the universe after we have formed the realm of an objective relationship of love with Him. In that relationship we can whisper words of love to each other and attain oneness with Him. Through the foundation of the principle of love, we can obtain the right of inheritance to this universe and everything in it, that is, all of the spiritual and physical worlds as created by Him. No one knows about this amazing truth. (137-67, 1985.12.18)

Adam was God's body in substantial form. 1 Corinthians 3:16 testifies to this fact with the words, "Do you not know that you are God's temple." The temple is God's dwelling place. The place in our hearts where the original love blossoms would then become the Holy of holies. God would have erected the temple of universal love in Adam's heart, expanded the power of love from there, and let the flower of love blossom. This is the purpose for which He created Adam and Eve and blessed them to create a family that would eventually fill the whole world. (121-113, 1982.10.24)

Where is the most sacred place of all? When asked where the most holy place is, we cannot answer that it is the temple in Jerusalem. Something man-made cannot be the most holy place. God builds the greatest sanctuary, where His love can dwell. This sanctuary, however, was lost. Thus, how great is the sin of humankind? (136-310, 1985.12.29)

God created human beings as His substantial bodies. 1 Corinthians 3:16 attests to this fact, with the words, "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?" What is the temple? It is God's dwelling place. Adam was God's body and Eve in the position of His wife. If they had fulfilled their destinies, their children would have been born from God's lineage. It is the Principle that they were to be His kindred. (135-313, 1985.12.15)

The Mission of the Messiah

What is the purpose of the Messiah? It is to complete the vertical foundation and bring forth the horizontal foundation. Then, who is the Messiah? The Messiah is the one who comes with a firm grasp of the fundamental plan for attaining the individual, family, national, and global standards of vertical completion. He does so by uniting to the vertical standard everything connected to the heavenly way and the public purpose that God and humankind must pursue. (71-79, 1974.04.28)

There are two beings in the universe who claim to be great -- God and Satan. These masters of good and evil are fighting against each other. They are waging a battle of good and evil over human beings.

To what degree is Satan extraordinary? According to anthropologists, human beings have lived on earth for one and a half million years. Throughout this time, Satan, as the overall commander leading the battle on the evil side, has inflicted heavy casualties upon God's side and has bound Him fast. This is why I am teaching about Satan's extraordinary power.

Who should end this battle? Neither God nor Satan can end it. You must be hearing this for the first time. Who can bring to an end the fight between the evil spirits and good spirits? Neither God nor Satan can. Then, who can put an end to it? Only a true person can end the battle. Without being a central figure of love who can be followed by all people, the true person cannot end the fight between God and Satan. As long as we are not liberated from this fight, future peace will be an impossible dream for the world, and ideals will be nothing but abstract, sentimental concepts.

Then, who can resolve this fight? For this task God has sent a representative. This is the typical concept of the Messiah. The Savior is the person who liberates not only people but also God. In addition, he punishes evil. The one responsible for the overall task of liberating God and liquidating evil is the Savior.

The character se in Savior (guse-ju) refers to the world. God gave His only begotten son because He loved the world, not because He loved Christianity. Many Christians memorize John 3:16 and repeat it over and over! It does not say that God so loved Christianity that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. It says that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son. What is the mission of the Savior? It is to liberate God and punish Satan. Who will get rid of this bitter enemy who has sunk his teeth into human beings and is accusing them so viciously? God cannot get rid of him. Only the Messiah, the Savior, can do that! (136-219, 1985.12.29)

Prayer: Please look upon Korea with compassion

Father, a sorrowful era has passed. As an individual, I reminisce about the old days that I can never forget. I reminisce again about the time You were worried as You faced the providence that had to run on the uphill path against the flow of our tragic history, the reverse path on which I had to establish the family.

Thanks to Your protection, we found that path and were not destroyed. In the course of twenty years, I established the foundation that can absorb America, the leading nation of the world. We knew that without doing so, it would be impossible to relieve You of Your sorrows and to liberate humanity. I dashed forward, struggling as I ran, to give everything with one heart. Now we can bring history to its final conclusion and go our way on this earth with a bold attitude, flying high the banner of hope and bringing all of providential history under Your protection. We are truly grateful for Your grace permitting us to walk this path.

Please allow the members of the Unification Church standing here at this moment to become one with the True Parents' family on the family level, so that they all can form a unity as strong as an impregnable fortress. Let us sing of Your love and of the liberation of all people. Let us rejoice, celebrating the realm of liberation in our garden. Please bless them to become a group of people who can deal with any difficulty that comes their way with joy and gratitude, and flourish through their connection to inspiring environments. Please remember them and visit them. Extend Your hand, the hand that protected me each time I crossed the high and precipitous mountains. Please watch over the path these people will tread.

The destiny of tribal restoration centered on the Home Church providence remains a common requirement that all people, who are in the process of realizing the kingdom of heaven on earth, still need to fulfill. We have entered a time of jubilation rather than persecution. The time has come when the name of True Parents can be revealed with honor in heaven and on earth. We have come to know the path we will follow, together with the good name of the True Parents. This is not a path of suffering any longer, but a smooth and level road.

Since this is the case, we should become people who are grateful when we face the front, and who are grateful when we look left and right, up and down, or forward and back. We should struggle to build a home in our realm of daily life, the victorious haven where You can rejoice. We have clearly understood that, by assuming such a beautiful attitude, we can show ourselves to be the people who love our nation, love the world, and love our Parents. We sincerely hope and pray, Father, that You will allow this time to be one in which we can inherit these relationships in the center of our hearts.

Father, upon my return to Korea, I am advising these people to cultivate this mind and heart. Please connect this love to the forty million people living in South Korea as well as to the hearts of those living in North Korea. Since North Korea is ruled by the Communist Party, please let the good ancestors in the spirit world connect to earth through the base of South Korea. Please let these ancestors transcend time and space so they can touch the hearts of their descendants without suffering any obstruction from Satan's world.

As we enter the era when such a historical mission can be carried out, we know that the time will come soon when, through these ancestors, we can bring the second generation members into unity so that they can direct their steps toward the Unification Church. Please let the benefits of Your grace reach them. We sincerely hope and pray that You will bless the second generation members so that they can prepare the starting point from which South Korea and North Korea will achieve unity.

Please let the devotions we offer and the sound of our prayers become like words of a new broadcasting system of life in all of heaven and earth. Please let our words reach the original hearts of all people in heaven and on earth. We sincerely hope and pray, Father, that You will bless us so that we can listen to the words of the new gospel as the directions by which we can return to the original homeland. We pray we can follow these words to form bonds in our lives that help us find our path to the original homeland.

I know all too well that the path of destiny remains to be completed, which I must follow with my life no matter what anyone may say. So I have struggled to follow it throughout my life. We are grateful once again that, in Your grace, You have allowed this blessed position to be given to humanity, to this nation, and to our Unification Church. We should not become a pitiful group that violates the precious merit of the age. Since we should not become followers of the way of immorality, if there are any blessed families who have ever harbored wrongful thoughts, Father, please forgive them with a compassionate heart at this time. Please place Your hand of blessing on them, so that they can inherit the Your kingdom through their successors or through their children.

You do not take us on the path that leads to ruin. The path You provide is the path of truth and of Your providence. This son of Yours knows that the reason You worked through me to establish the Unification Church was not so we would perish, but rather so that we may actualize Your Will, which is Your earnest desire to liberate humanity and free even those who are in the pitiful realm of death. So please enshrine this prayer of Your son in Your heart and look upon Korea with pity. Please extend Your hand of blessing on the path of Your young children who are struggling and coming forward to take responsibility for the Korean people. Since I know that it is only then that You can be liberated before this nation and this people, I sincerely ask that You will receive my prayer and guide us to that path.

Father, during the remaining three days we should kneel down and repent in fight of history. Since we, as the families who were trained on earth with a connection of heart to our True Parents, pledged to become a qualified and worthwhile group of people unashamed to face You, our Heavenly Father, our True Parents, Jesus, Moses and Jacob, a people in whom You can take pride, we request again and again, our Father of love, that You will remember us and give us every encouragement, guidance and direction so that we can stand in this position. Please permit us to become people who are not ashamed before the era that has been given us. We offer all these words in the name of True Parents. Aju!

Restoration of the right of the eldest son

Sun Myung Moon
December 22, 1985

SunMyungMoon-851222-1.png

When you all think about Cain and Abel in the Principle, who do you think is more precious, Cain or Abel? Who is precious? Everyone thinks Abel is more precious, but that is a mistake. Abel is in the younger brother's position, and Cain is in the elder son's position. You must understand this correctly. The position of the firstborn son is more precious than that of the second son, Abel. There is only one firstborn son, but younger brothers can be many. Can there be several firstborn sons? There is only one first child. The reason why the first child is precious is that there is only one. The following children can be many in number. You must understand this.

...

As God carried out the dispensation for restoration, His grief lay in the fact that the firstborn son was on Satan's side. That is why human history is diseased. What kind of disease does it suffer from? It has a love related disease. The first son was born after humankind went astray due to the disease of love. If we are not aware of this fact, we won't reach the time when we are able to ascend to the individual position where we can again achieve harmony, even if we spend billions of years in search of the principled standard.

...

For what purpose does God designate Abel? He does it to establish the rights of the firstborn son and to correct the tradition within the family, not in order to save Abel's children. Unification Church members don't understand this point. You say, "Ahem! I am Abel," but you leaders must remember that you cannot say, "Because we are in the position of Abel, that's it!" The reason all of you are placed in your positions is to restore a tribe that holds the right of the eldest son. If you want to receive blessings, earn the right of the firstborn son and share the blessings, then you can receive some of them. The right of the firstborn son is not for you. Focused on the Lord who is to come, you must develop a connection with the vertical heavenly world. This will not happen with only the horizontal physical world. I was going to explain this last point in more detail in terms of the Principle but, as I believe you understand this, I am putting it in simple terms. Since I, the founder of the Unification Church, came to know this path, I could not help but establish the logic of "living for the sake of others." We were born for the sake of others. You must also realize that man was born for the sake of woman. There is no such thing as "I".

God's Will and Korea

Rally for Global Security and Victory over Communism

My fellow citizens, distinguished guests, fellow colleagues working to defeat communism here at home and abroad, ladies and gentlemen:

I would like to express my deep appreciation that so many of you have come here today to participate in this rally, contributing your time at this most busy season of the year.

Korea is the focal point of God's providence

The title of my message is "God's Will and Korea." In it I want to clearly show that Korea is the focal point of God's providence, and that the key to the solution of the problems of the world today is to be found on the Korean Peninsula.

Looking at the situation of the world at this time, all of us feel disappointment. In spite of humanity's cherished hopes for freedom, peace, and security, the world is becoming more and more confused every day. There seems to be no hope for the future of humankind. Despite the constant efforts of world leaders, the problems of the world are becoming more complicated and more difficult to solve.

No religion or philosophy, and no political ideology, whether democratic or communist, has proven capable of solving any of these problems. The reason is that none of them understands the Will of God. Because human history is the history of God's providence of restoration, no fundamental solution to world problems is possible without understanding God's providential Will.

God is promoting His providence for the world by focusing on the divided Korean Peninsula. Therefore we must understand the significance of its division. The Demilitarized Zone on the thirty-eighth parallel, which divides the peninsula, is the line of confrontation between the communist system of dictatorship and the free world system of democracy, between the left-wing forces on the side of evil and the rightwing forces on the side of goodness, between materialism and idealism, and between atheism and theism. From the standpoint of ideology and socio-political systems, we see that the world today is divided between the democratic world and the communist bloc, with the United States and the Soviet Union as their respective leaders.

The case of Korea is paradigmatic; it presents in a condensed form the division of the world. Put another way, the situation of the world is an expansion and elaboration of the situation in Korea. Herein lies the deep significance of Korea in God's plan. God's Will is first to accomplish the unification of the Korean Peninsula, which represents the world in microcosm, and then, by applying the same method to the world, accomplish the ideological and sociopolitical unity of the whole world.

The thirty-eighth parallel and the confrontation between Hebraism and Hellenism

The thirty-eighth parallel is providentially significant in another way too; it marks the separation and confrontation of two civilizations. One is the Judeo-Christian culture inherited from the Hebraic tradition of Israel; the other is the communist civilization, which is a debased residue of Hellenistic culture. Had Jesus been able to go to Rome, he was to have united Hebraism and Hellenism. Jesus was to have been the center for their unity, but because he was crucified, the center for their unity was lost. As a result, Hebraism and Hellenism have coexisted in history. They developed along parallel lines, sometimes one predominating and sometimes the other, without being truly united. Today they confront each other across the Demilitarized Zone. It is God's Will that these two currents should unite on the Korean Peninsula. Understood in this fight, this fine of tension is of great providential significance.

Geopolitically speaking, Korea is at a disadvantage because it is surrounded by four major powers. Providentially though, Korea has the advantage, in the sense that success achieved here can quickly be expanded throughout the world by the major powers. Thus we see Korea's position as the focal point of God's providence.

How does God intend to accomplish the unification of the Korean Peninsula? He will establish a central figure, and he will promote His providential Will by putting God's love into practice. God's love starts with love of neighbor, extends to love of country, and expands to love the entire world. God's love is to love our enemies even on the worldwide level, transcending national interests. God's love is to pray for one's enemy and if necessary be willing to sacrifice one's life for the sake of the enemy. Jesus, who two thousand years ago came as the Messiah, was the very hero of this love. Jesus loved his enemies even to the point of allowing himself to be crucified.

The thirty-eighth parallel is a national level cross

As you know, two thieves were crucified with Jesus. The thief on the left accused Jesus, while the thief on the right testified to Jesus and defended him, admonishing the thief on the left. Thus, the thief on the right came to represent the side of goodness, while the thief on the left came to represent the side of evil, and in this way the crucifixion was the focal point in the confrontation between God and Satan. There is deep providential significance in the fact that Jesus, who was the way, the truth and the life, and who loved even his enemies, suffered on the cross with good and evil on either side. This reveals the principle of reconciliation and unity, centering on God's love. It teaches us that the struggling and warring sides can be reconciled and united through sacrificial love. We can also learn from this the lesson that if we practice God's love no matter how difficult the situation, we can lead any sinner to repentance.

We must also understand that the two thieves represent seeds that bear the fruits of good and evil that will confront each other at the consummation of human history. The appearance in the Last Days of the right wing, or the free world, as the side of goodness, and the left wing, or the communist world, as the side of evil, originated at the crucifixion of Jesus. Moreover, this confrontation between the two thieves is the prototype of many subsequent conflicts and struggles. The designations "right wing" and "left wing" actually have their historical origin in the thieves on the right and the left of the cross.

The thief on the right, as he was dying, testified to Jesus and opposed the thief on the left. Consequently, after his death, he was resurrected and entered into paradise. This indicates that if the United States, standing as the thief on the right, maintains to the last moment a strong stance against communism, standing as the thief on the left, then it will receive God's approval and will be able to enter the kingdom of heaven on earth.

The actual situation of today's conflicts and struggles, whose prototype was the opposition between good and evil at the crucifixion, is intensely expressed by the current Military Demarcation Line across the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, the thirty-eighth parallel separating North and South Korea represents the cross that the Korean nation must bear in order to providentially redeem the divided world. The Korean nation corresponds to Jesus on the cross, even as it is the foundation for the Second Coming of Christ.

The Korean people are the offering of providential history

Why in working His providence did God put the Korean nation through the way of the cross? He did so to call its people to their mission. God called the Korean people because they have a tradition of reverence for God and because they have overcome long trials by the exercise of moral purity and their peaceloving spirit. God called them to become the sacrificial offering of providential significance for the purpose of saving humanity in the Last Days.

The Korean people, who have gone through hardships for several thousand years, have now become the sacrifice for the salvation of the world. As they bear the world-historical cross of the division of their nation, they will continue to face countless trials, which they must overcome.

The Korean people must realize that this is a glorious blessing for the Korean nation and at the same time a fearful and heavy burden. If they fulfill their responsibility as people who offer themselves as a sacrifice, they will receive a glorious blessing. If they do not, the heaviest misfortunes will befall them. A people will meet with misfortune if it is unable to fulfill its responsibility. A mission of providential significance, to be a sacrificial offering, has been laid on this nation's shoulders. In order to fulfill it, the Korean people have to practice love, and at the same time they need to know the truth of God.

Jesus, as the incarnation of love, said that he is the way, the truth and the life. He was the incarnation of love and truth when he was crucified. This means that love and truth are necessary to reconcile the good and evil sides and lead enemies to come together in repentance. The truth refers to God's teaching of love, not secular truth. God's truth is sent to earth as revelation and comes through providential persons. God's truth is the absolute truth, an all-powerful key capable of solving even the most difficult problems.

Godism and the unity of love

I have encountered the living God through a lifetime of prayer and meditation, and have been given this absolute truth. Its remarkable content clarifies the hidden secrets of the universe, human life and history. When this truth is applied in society, social problems are solved, and when it is applied in the world, world problems are solved. The unanswered questions of religion are also resolved through this truth. In particular, when it is applied to evaluate communist theory, it brings to light communism's falsehoods and sets up a critique and counterproposal.

This is a new and previously unknown view of life, of the world and the universe, and of the providence and history. It is also a principle of integration that can bring the world into a unity while at the same time preserving the unique characteristics of all religious doctrines and philosophies. I have named this truth Unificationism or Godism, and have initiated the Unification movement and the Victory over Communism movement on a worldwide scale. They are now spreading like a wildfire.

So far I have explained that the practice of God's love and the truth of God are necessary for the reconciliation and unity of all. The reunification of a divided Korea will surely be accomplished if we embrace those on the side of evil with love, while helping them understand the errors of their thinking by means of the truth that we on the side of goodness understand.

The principle of living for others is the way of Heaven

Now I will speak more concretely about love. To love is to bring benefit to one's counterpart rather than oneself. Love is established when there is a mutual relationship between subject and object partners. Love emerges from one's counterpart. Love cannot exist if there is no counterpart. All created beings are designed to benefit others; each exists for the sake of the other. Not only human beings, but also animals, plants, and minerals exist for the sake of others. Even entities at the atomic level exist for other entities.

Also each of the heavenly bodies moves for the sake of other heavenly bodies. In light of their physical structure, men exist for the sake of women, and women exist for the sake of men. Likewise, parents exist for the sake of their children and children exist for their parents.

This principle of existence for the sake of the other applies to one's school, to one's place of work, and to the nation. However, love must not be limited by the boundaries of a nation; people need to love the world beyond their own national borders and love their enemies on a worldwide level. Therefore, the principle of living for the sake of others, that is, the principle of love, is the principle of Heaven or the way of Heaven. If we practice the principle of love even in the midst of hardships, then we will be sustained by the power of the universe and will never perish. If a person lives a comfortable life without observing this principle of living for others, he or she will soon decline. The saying, "The one who disobeys Heaven will perish and the one who obeys Heaven will prosper" is a truth rooted in this heavenly principle.

Korea is bearing the cross on the national level. No matter how difficult it may be to unite this nation, Koreans have to practice living for the sake of others, as individuals, as families, as a society, and as a nation, in accordance with the way of Heaven. Let us unite with the center of truth and expand this to the international level. If we do this, we will hasten not only the unification of the Korean Peninsula but also the salvation of the entire world. This must be the lifestyle of Koreans, to be in accord with God's providential Will. Not only will this promote the unity of North and South Korea; this method of unity will become the formula for the whole world to follow. Through this movement of love and truth, all the difficult problems of the world will be solved, humankind will be liberated from its long nightmare of sorrow and confusion, and everlasting happiness and peace will come for all.

Our homeland, Korea, has been deceived and made to suffer throughout history. There is no better way for us to go than to depend on God.

Spearheading the worldwide Victory over Communism movement

So far the Unification Church, the members of the Victory over Communism movement, and I have been making incredible efforts abroad to establish a victorious foundation on a worldwide level. Today I have returned to this country hoping that this victorious foundation may be connected to Korea, and that Korea may make a great leap onto the world stage.

I hope that especially you leaders of the Victory over Communism movement in Korea will be at the forefront in the fight against communism. I sincerely hope that you will extend your kind cooperation to members from other countries in order to make the connections of this foundation more secure.

Finally I pray that God will bless your families, our homeland, and the world.

Thank you very much.
