Recreation by the Word

by Patrick J. Kirkbride

From Feb. 13 to Feb. 17, 1995 (excluding Valentine's Day) Rev. Zin Moon Kim, the Deputy Director of the World Mission Department, gave an internal guidance workshop from 5:00pm to 6:00pm each night for the office staff of Go World Travel, Inc., the World Mission Department and the Today's World magazine.

Though all of us are usually quite busy till we go home in the evening, we had a 97% attendance record overall. As I have not been to a workshop since last summer, I appreciated the one hour each day Rev. Kim invested in us. His main concern is that office people often forget about what is truly important in our life of faith: witnessing and tithing.

He stressed that we need to focus more than we have on witnessing and only then can we develop our heart. From working in offices over a period of five years in Korea he knows the challenge of being in the office. He has observed that money often becomes a focus when we stay in an office position and cautioned us to be careful. He gave four points for maintaining our life of faith:

1. Read the Divine Principle and Father's speeches everyday.

2. Pray for others.

3. Witness by our own method. As we live in different locations we need to witness differently. Be creative.

4. Tithing. Don't think that 30% tithing is impossible. If we don't tithe in this way, we will always have money problems. When we tithe we should go to the bank and exchange for new or clean bills. This expresses our heartistic offering. Money cannot make heart but heart can make money.

He also stressed that we need to be connected to the Main Providence of today. As the providence changes according to God's timetable, we need to keep alert as to what Father is conveying through his recent speeches so that we don't keep going in a straight line and miss the change that is occurring.

Often Rev. Kim hears brothers and sisters saying that they want to help or they want to support some aspect of the providence. He is very concerned about this point. If we want to only help or support then we are not taking a subjective position and making the project our own. Below are True Parents' three main worldwide providences of today:

1. WFWP - At the beginning of human history Adam, Eve and the Archangel had a bad relationship amongst each other. To indemnify this, True Parents have established the sister relationship in Korea and now in the USA mobilizing American sisters and women to attend the Japan-America sister relationship conferences in Washington D.C.

2. Originally God created the four position foundation centering on God but as we know Adam and Eve failed. To restore worldwide this broken relationship, our True Parents have sent Korean missionaries (brothers) and Japanese missionaries (sisters) to go to each of the 160 nations representing True Father and True Mother with the members of each nation representing the children. As much as possible the Koreans and Japanese should live in the same center so that they can mobilize heavenly fortune through cooperation and unity centering upon the Korean brother.

3. FFUWP - The recent development of the Family Federation for Unification and World Peace is an umbrella for the following four organizations. Under the FFUWP representing the family, the Women's Federation for World Peace as parents and the Youth Federation for World Peace as children should make a good vertical relationship. The Inter-Religious Federation for World Peace as mind and the Federation for World Peace as body should make a good horizontal relationship. These are the conditions which Adam's family had lost due to the fall.

In raising our children:

We should bequeath something of value to our children. We should buy one subscription of The Sermons of Rev. Sun Myung Moon for each of our children. This is a wonderful investment for our children's future.

There is an old Korean proverb about children: If a three year old child develops a habit, it will last till they are eighty years old. We need to be very wise in making our children responsible.

In raising ourselves:

A good friend is good capitol for life. If you live your life for the sake of others then you will have many friends.

If you want to be a victor you must jump into the Satanic world. Don't stay in a comfortable and don't avoid hard work.

Discouragement is the first step to failure.

Don't change your attitude of loyalty to God's Will regardless of what comes at us.

Many people believe in God, but how many people can God believe in?

The 360,000 blessing in August, 1995:

Each blessed couple has been given the responsibility of bringing 12 couples to the blessing this year. We need to make a good plan to do this. In order for us to jump into the Kingdom of Heaven, this is an exclusive condition.

Rev. Kim gave much more content than what I have shared with you here. He said that he will give similar workshops like this at least once a year in order to guide office staff to remember their initial calling to the Unification Church.

You, such miserable beings!
You, such miserable beings!
You don't know how deeply you've nailed many nails
into Heavenly Father's bosom!
Don't you think so?
You, such miserable beings!

You, such miserable beings!
You, such miserable beings!
You don't know how deeply you've sown much sigh
In True Parents' bosom
Don't you think so?
You, such miserable beings!

You, such miserable beings!
You, such miserable beings!
You don't know how deeply you've sown much suffering
In brothers'/sisters' bosoms!
Don't you think so?
You, such miserable beings!

You, such miserable beings!
You, such miserable beings!
You must quickly restore the original happy relationships
Between God and you, my children!
Don't you think so?
You, such miserable beings!

Our Original Desires

by Jesus Gonzalez-Hong Kong

The famous scientist and spiritualist of the 18th century, Emanuel Swedenborg visited and explored the spiritual world for nearly 30 years. Once he was thinking about heaven and hell and he wrote this answer given to him by teachers there:

"There are three basic facts about hell, but they are just the opposite of the facts about heaven. The basic facts of hell are three loves -- the love of ruling due to self-love, the love of having what belongs to others due to love of the world, and the love of fornication."

"The basic facts of heaven are the three loves opposite to these -- the love of ruling due to a love of being useful, the love of having worldly goods due to a love of putting them to good use, and real married love"

As we can see, heaven and hell begins with me, with our loves and attitudes. Consequently, it is everyone's responsibility to really recover and maintain the proper attitude over the four original and God-given desires to fulfill the purpose of our lives.

Four Desires

These four original desires are:

1. The desire for sexual love. The proper way to fulfill this desire is to keep the basic law of the cosmos, which was given already in the very beginning with the symbolic expression "do not eat". This means abstinence before marriage and to maintain absolute fidelity and love to our spouse after marriage, accomplishing the ideal of an eternal love and a family that will give us the greatest peace and happiness forever.

On the contrary, the misuse of this natural desire brings about a love for variety or free sex, in other words, love of fornication and adultery, that is opposed to a real married love. In the end, people involved in this type of love never find permanent satisfaction, and it inevitably leads them to unhappiness.

2. The desire for material things (love of having worldly goods). There is nothing wrong with our wish to own things, to be rich, wealthy and prosperous, to be a millionaire, to have money, land and property.

All of these aspirations are related to the desire to exercise a true and loving dominion over the environment that will enable us to be the true lords or caretakers of the creation. But what is the proper attitude to realize these desires? If everything we possess is used correctly for the benefit and service of others, bringing joy and happiness to everyone and harmony to the environment, that is perfectly fine. On the other hand, if we hold possessions only for our own personal interests and self- gratification, that is unprincipled and in the end it will bring neither joy or lasting prosperity.

3. The desire for authority (love of ruling). Everyone wishes to be a king or queen. This is a natural and original desire because of our position and dignity as children of God. The proper way to exercise this desire is to become a true leader. A true leader is the one who delights in being useful and sincerely serves and loves others the most. Therefore, such a person is naturally appreciated and everyone will gladly give him or her that recognition, power and position.

Value and Position. When we have true internal value in ourselves and the external qualifications, soon or later, position will be given to us even if we do not seek for any appointment. On the contrary, when someone cherishes a position for his or her own benefit or self-glory, and obviously lacks moral value, in the long run such person will lose that position.

4. The desire for self-perfection. This is an original desire or ambition that will always motivate us to reach our potential as children of God. We all have this desire to be good and successful. We like to gain knowledge and develop skills. We want to achieve excellency in the things we do. We like to be recognized, to be admired and be famous. We wish to become great performers, artists, scientists, lecturers, sports champions, inventors, philanthropists, etc.

Fulfillment

The proper attitude to realize all these aspirations is to use all our achievements for the good and happiness of others. If not, our desire, ambition and hope centered only on ourselves will develop into greed. The exercise of freedom without the divine law generates permissiveness and licentiousness. The wrong use of love becomes lust. When we do not live centered on God our natural pride of being a child of God becomes vanity and arrogance. If not used properly to help others, our talents and creativity are often turned into maliciousness.

There is not one basic desire or element in the human character that is essentially evil. Good and evil are a matter of direction. When our original desires are misdirected, it results in our "fallen nature", basically selfishness. For this reason, the root of our wrong conduct is the reversal of the main forces for goodness.

It all begins with me. A new awakening is needed, a realization based on true love, that we shall benefit more when we genuinely live for the sake of others. In the future twenty-first century selfishness will decline. Life, honor and glory based on unselfishness shall be triumphant. We need to completely restore our spiritual sensitivity, so that we can never mistreat or harm others. We must come to feel the suffering and pain of others as our own. In the same way, our happiness also will be achieved when we make others happy. Each one of us is the true starting point for a better world. True worldwide peace and happiness begins with the perfection of our moral character. Motivated by this true love our lives will prosper and finally we will be able to create a new and better future for humanity.

Notes on Young Whi Kim's `95 Blessing Talk

Farley Jones

During the Leader's Conference associated with this past God's Day in Korea, Betsy and I were privileged to hear a rich presentation by Reverend Young Whi Kim on various aspects of principled life, including family. His remarks are summarized in the adjoining article which I commend to your reading.

Young Whi Kim is one of Father's first disciples, a man of deep heart and thoughtful mind. I found his words very substantial, challenging and precious.

By now many members will be engaged in the campaign for the August Blessing. I would like to share the four goals that I have adopted for this campaign.

My first prayer is that we can do whatever is necessary to get ourselves empowered. We need to come to a point of clear conviction over what is being offered through True Parents the Blessing and the Unification Movement.

Secondly, of course we want to bring thousands of people to the Blessing. As you know, our specific goal for the United States is 40,000 couples. That is a big challenge, but reachable if each couple were to raise up 12 other couples. Let each of us set that as our personal goal.

Thirdly, I intend that the Blessing '95 campaign will continue the process of resurrecting True Parents' name in the United States and worldwide.

Finally, I am praying that through this campaign and the Blessing itself we can offer substantial liberation and spiritual elevation to the people who participate, so that this campaign actually will be a great blessing to the participants and our nation.

Adoration Art: A Guide for Discovering Your Original Artistic Nature by Dietrich Seidel-Barrytown, NY

Even a cursory reading of Karl Leonhardtsberger's book Adoration Art reveals that the author expects the reader to take an artistic vantage point for exploring the unique features of Adoration Art.

In my opinion, this book intends not only to provoke and stimulate the reader but also to motivate him to unearth the often hidden reality of his artistic disposition to life. Rather than presenting an academic treatise discussing a new theoretical approach to art, Leonhardtsberger chooses to present the tenets of Adoration Art in a carefully arranged sequence of personal insights expressed in lucid paragraphs. It seems to me that such a format is quite effective for engaging the reader in a dialogue with the author. It allows the audience to get in touch with its own opinion on the subject in question. We are, in a sense, invited to recreate the meaning of Adoration Art for ourselves. Thus, Leonhardtsberger's book can also be seen as a guide for meditating on the ultimate significance of art and what it means for effectively reshaping our lives.

To me, Adoration Art identifies the power of integration as one of its dominant themes. That is to say, Adoration Art is that human endeavor which holds the potential to bridge Eastern and Western cultures, in addition to mediating between the spiritual and physical realms. Leonhardtsberger says: "I believe the philosophy of Adoration Art is a new concept, enveloping both Eastern and Western ideas. It contains within itself the power to bridge the gap between opposing art forms, thus bringing about a new and higher development in art. I assume that the two main streams of art-forms also exist in oriental culture. One form addresses itself more toward heaven, the other deals more with earthly things." Here the mediating power of Adoration Art becomes an instrument for a new synthesis of various art forms which is rooted in the acknowledgment of God as the one supreme being.

In my view, Adoration Art represents a unique application of Unification Thought to the field of art in terms of raising the consciousness of both artists and art-lovers to see all of existence as an ongoing process of creating beauty and responding to beauty. Within that process, all human beings are to be respected as artists, whether on a potential or actual level. In exploring the uniqueness of human creativity, Adoration Art leads the reader to a deeper understanding of what it means to be created as a true partner for God. It seems to me that Leonhardtsberger succeeds not only with his initial intention to offer his reflections and notes "as a philosophical foundation for art with God at the center," but he also provides significant pastoral guidance for the readers of Adoration Art as they enter the process of discovering their original God-given artistic nature.

You can order the book Adoration Art from Life Enrichment Enterprises, P.O. Box 52, Barrytown, NY 12507, for $12 plus $3 s+h. For more information, call Elisabeth Seidel (914) 758-4137.

IRFF-UK Update

by Chris D. Hays-London, UK

These are two profiles of work that IRFF is accomplishing in Eastern Europe.

Kiev, Ukraine

Aiding two care institutions, one hospital for the disabled and one clinic for trauma/cancer victims of Chernobyl. Six shipments of supplies, valued at # 49,725 since May 1994.

The Kiev Children's Fund is home to some 135 children raging in age from newborn to 5 years. Residents are those afflicted with cancers, autism, mental disorders, spina bifida and handicaps.

Insufficient heating in this hospital and old worn out electrical works makes for a cold and dark home. Founded by the state in 1947, KCF was formerly known as the State Hospital no. 101, Kiev. Psychological research is carried out at the hospital for diabetic patients and viral infections. Most of the children hail from lone parents.

Our IRFF-UK supplies, like dry-zone creams, antiseptic lotions and lemsips have contributed greatly to the establishment of more secure western lines of procurement. This in turn, builds bridges between the end-user and our stakeholders for IRFF.

St. Pertersburg, Russia

Aiding two care institutions, one school for the blind and one clinic for contagious diseases. Five relief aid shipments valued at #31, 330.00 wholesale since Sept. 94.

Most of the children who are in the half-blind school called the "School for Life" (total enrollment, 97) come from broken homes and families, the minorities, etc. Alcoholism by these children's parents has had the knock-on effect of damage to over 70 % of the enrolled youths' liver function. The School for Life helps rehabilitate kids from large families, as well as aiding foster families. In February 1991 the School was registered, acting in accordance with the International Convention on children's rights, Geneva.

Statistics accurate as of January 31, 1995.
