HSA-UWC Celebrates Her 40th Anniversary in Seoul

by James A. Baughman, Ph.D. President, HSA-UWC United States

Sunday, May 1, marked the end of a chapter and the beginning of another in the history of the Unification Church. The 40th anniversary celebration of the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity commenced at 10:00 am at the Olympic Park Gymnastics Hall in Seoul where twenty-five thousand members and guests gathered together with our True Parents to commemorate the occasion. Dignitaries, religious leaders and scholars from around the world were also part of the congregation.

As part of the ceremony, Father and Mother gave awards of commendation to Hyo Won Eu, first president of the Unification Church, three missionaries who were martyred in the course of their service to the Church and Young Oon Kim, first missionary to America. The ceremony also included a brief reading of significant milestones in the forty- year history of the Church and a presentation of gifts by representatives of ICC, IRF, RYS and other organizations and projects founded by Father during his arduous, yet victorious 40-year course.

In his Founder's Address, Father reminisced not only about the accomplishments and trials aver the past forty years, but more the motivation which drove him to never resign from his promise to God to save this world. He said that God is not looking for saints who will be remembered in history after their death, but rather those who, in this age, are able to transform the evil world into the world of goodness God longs for. He explained how he pledged that he would accomplish this will of God in his lifetime, even from the depths of prison and in the face of death countless times.

The mandate given by Father in his address was for all to help establish a true heart-centered culture in the world now that we are entering a new phase of our Church's history. In conclusion, he proclaimed glory to God in deepest gratitude for having brought the True Parents and the Church to this point in history. For those who could understand the depths of Father history and heart, many silent tears were shed.

The celebration continued with a banquet and performance at the Little Angels Performing Arts Center, where the hall was filled to capacity. The event began at 6:00 pm and included, among other things, a toast offered to the True Parents by Dr. Morton Kaplan, president of PWPA International, and a plaque of recognition offered by Dr. Tor Ragnar Gerholm, ICUS Conference Chairman, for True Parents' dedication to world peace through scholarly dialogue and cultural harmony.

Again, Father addressed the audience by reflecting on his life's course and expressing gratitude for God's protection and guidance. He recalled the dismal state of the world when he began the Church and how God painstakingly built the foundation through our True Parents to brings us to this point in history. People were genuinely moved by his words and his heart.

The event officially ended Sunday evening, but for some it culminated with an early morning leaders' meeting at True Parents residence the next day. The highlight of the gathering was when Father declared the official completion of the 40-year course of indemnity and the Children's Pledge and Pledge of the Families which represented that period. Having declared this, he proceeded to write a new seven-point pledge to replace the others as we enter this new era of the Church. Father said that since none of us truly actualized the other two pledges during the past forty years, we should place the pledge cards on our altar, make a full bow and pray in repentance for our shortcomings. Having done so, we may then retire the cards to our family archives and begin to recite the new pledge entitled, "The Family Pledge." The official wording in Korean and English will be forthcoming soon.

We now begin a new chapter of the history of HSA-UWC. Let us make it one upon which we can look back with pride, honor and dignity.

Federation for World Peace Second World Peace Conference - Peace and the 21st Century

by William P. Selig

Although we face a world of disorder today, instead of a new world order, it is still merely a transition from the cold war to the order of the future. In order to successfully manage this transition, 42 former heads of state and government, and prime ministers from 70 different countries spanning all 6 continents, contributed their thoughts, experience, and time to the Second World Peace Conference on Peace and the 21st Century. This conference, cosponsored by the Federation for World Peace, the Summit Council for World Peace and the Segye Ilbo, was held in Seoul, Korea from March 26-29, 1994.

The Long Road to Victory

It was in April 1990, at the historic joint Summit Council and World Media Conference that Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon met with then- President Mikhail Gorbachev. Since that eventful meeting, the Providence has moved with surprising speed in the former Soviet Union. Despite the many challenges facing the former Empire, it is clear that Heaven seeks after a champion with the vision and courage that typified the revolutionary social and economic programs known commonly as perestroika and glasnost. With these thoughts firmly implanted in Father's mind, direction was given to approach Mr. Gorbachev and proceed with the Second World Peace Conference.

To make a long story short, as Dr. Pak would say, it was quite a battle to bring Mr. Gorbachev to Seoul. We were tasked to find the schedule that would fit into the calendars of two of the world's busiest people. Mr. Gorbachev, since his resignation from office, has become a very sought after speaker.

Once the keynote speaker was secured, the invitation process which has been so successful in the past was set into motion. Mark Barry drafted a background piece as part of the invitation packet. Suggestions were received from around the world from national leaders and missionaries. This is a very dear part of our mission. Each country aches to have someone represent their homeland. They call our office over and over again, as if to say, "I'm offering my spiritual child, you must take care of him." Schedules, hotel reservations, this and that, were made, changed, re-confirmed, and finally we drew near the end. With the conference set to start just a week away, the staff was ready to board the plane for Korea, yet names were still coming in. Despite a clearly stated deadline, the missionaries refused to give up. "Just one more."

Land of the Morning Calm

With only a few days before the inaugural meeting, there were a million and one details to take care of. Antonio Betancourt was in Beijing attempting to obtain an invitation from North Korea to take our guests across the border at Panmunjom. This is an incredible story in itself. We did indeed receive permission from the North, but the trip occurred a week after our conference, and the group crossed not at Panmunjom, but out of Beijing. The entourage included several former heads of state, and representatives from the Washington Times, CNN, and NHK of Japan.

In attempting to organize a crossing at the 38th parallel, Antonio met with officials from the U.S. State and Defense Departments, but in the end, the idea was nixed by the South who saw it as too risky during a particularly tense and dangerous negotiating period between the two sides. Just days before, the delegate from the North had described war in especially vivid terms: "Fire will fill the streets," he said. Meanwhile, back at the conference, with Antonio in China, the final brunt of the responsibilities fell on the shoulders of William Selig, who along with seasoned professional conference managers, Tomiko Duggan, Larry Moffitt and Paul Tobkin, were tasked to pull this important program together. A special thanks goes to the Korean brothers and sisters who worked tirelessly to make this event a reality.

The Gorbachev's Arrival

Mikhail and Raisa Gorbachev alighted from the plane to a tumultuous welcome. They were accompanied by our brother Tom McDevitt who escorted them from Taiwan. There was a mob of reporters and a lightening barrage of photo flashes. The Speaker of the Korean Assembly designated Dr. Pak as their official representative to receive the Gorbachevs. Flowers were presented and off they went to the Hotel Lotte with a police escort. At the hotel, more flowers and photographs. Truly they were received as visiting royalty. The Korean public opened their hearts.

The next day, Saturday (March 25) after a well-attended news conference, President Gorbachev traveled to the home of True Parents for lunch and private discussions. Mrs. Gorbachev had come down with a cold and remained in the hotel. The visit was extremely amicable. Father and Mother presented an original oil painting of Mr. Gorbachev done by a famous Korean artist. True Mother was the ideal hostess. There were many photographs and it was a delightful reunion since the last meeting was in Moscow back in April 1990.

That evening the show began! The receiving line included Mr. Gorbachev, Sir Edward Heath of Great Britain, Edward Schreyer of Canada and Dr. & Mrs. Rodrigo Carazo of Costa Rica. After a prominent Korean congressman offered a beautiful toast, Father and Mother cut the celebratory cake to officially open the Second World Peace Conference.

Opening Inaugural Session

The Founder was introduced by former Prime Minister of Egypt, H. E. Abdelaziz Hegazy. Father's address is reprinted elsewhere in this issue, but in essence he told the heads of state and government that in reality there is no secret path to world peace. The answer lies in hard work, period. A united mind and body on the individual level is the first step towards global peace, end of story.

Headwing Ideology can return humanity to the state of God and therefore of peace by reunifying the mind and the body. To accomplish this unity, the Four Great Realms of the Heart o that is, the love of the child, sibling love, marital love, and love of one's parents o will reach perfection when human beings are centered on God, marry each other, and conceive children whom are then raised in that environment of perfect family love. That love within the family is the seed for all love and peace. Once it is achieved, familial love will extend from the family, to country, to the world, and beyond into the cosmos. It is at this point that true peace will be achieved. He extolled the world leaders to take an active role in the Federation for World Peace.

Headwing vs. Perestroika vs. Juche

In his Keynote Address, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev noted that this conference was particularly special because it was held in Seoul, where what is commonly noted as the last cold war-era conflict still rages: the conflict on the Korean peninsula. It is here where the tension along the 38th parallel, separating people with the same language, the same culture, and the same history, also contains the nuclear threat based in Pyongyang, which captures the attention, energy, and hostility of the major powers of the emerging world order.

Gorbachev also stated that one of the greatest crises that the new world order must address is the moral degradation of mankind. Therefore, leaders should help incorporate a standard of morality and ethics into the world.

Association for the Unity of Latin America

The Gorbachevs were invited to receive a certificate of honor from AULA, the Association for the Unity of Latin America. The Latin American Order of Liberty and Unity is a beautiful gold plaque medallion and sash, and has been presented to numerous heads of state and international leaders. The Gorbachev's were visibly moved. One of the best photos of the conference was captured by Paolo Galli, the staff photographer when True Parents, and Mr. and Mrs. Gorbachev are all holding hands and shining with heavenly happiness. Making the presentation was Amb. Jose Maria Chaves, President of AULA. He was assisted by former Presidents Rodrigo Carazo of Costa Rica and Fernando Belaunde Terry of Peru.

If all this wasn't enough, the Little Angels marched out to sing several selections including "We are the World," and "Hand in Hand." The Little Angels Performing Arts Center had built an incredible stage in the shape of the Federation's logo and situated it in front of the head table. When this huge circle of 40 precious children began to sing, holding hands, swaying with the music, wearing these cute outfits and hats, there was not a dry eye in the house.

The Program

The Second World Peace Conference was comprised of four plenary sessions: (1) Vital Steps Toward Peace in the 21st Century, (2) The Reunification of Korea and the Role of the International Community, (3) Post Cold War Reconstruction: The Market Economy Model and Socialist Ideal, and (4) Restoration of the Global Environment.

In addition, a number of guest speakers presented addresses during luncheons and dinners, including, Hon. Frank Carlucci, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, Dr. Gavriil Popov, former Mayor of Moscow, and H.E. Apas Jumagulov, the current Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan.

The former prime minister of Great Britain, Sir Edward Heath suggested that institutionally, education should be improved and incorporate religious tolerance. Many of the wars today are between ethnic groups and competing organizations espousing different religious values. If every school taught the fundamentals of many different religions, and not just the individual country's predominant one, then tolerance would increase and, simultaneously, so would the chances for peace.

Another very interesting guest was Dr. Hanan Mikhail Ashrawi, a distinguished representative of the Palestinians. The media devoted alot of attention to her remarks. Maureen Reagan and Princess Eva Maria Andrej of Yugoslavia also attended.

Maureen Reagan said, "We thank Reverend and Mrs. Moon for their commitment to spiritual rebirth as a basis for world peace. Your optimism and your genuine affection for all humankind make you extraordinary allies in the battle to light even the darkest corners of the earth. President Reagan and I thank you both for your friendship."

The Gorbachev Visit

Although the Gorbachevs attended the conference functions, they were also kept busy with their own schedule. Introduced by Dr. Pak, Mr. Gorbachev addressed the Korean Parliament on Monday, March 28, and afterwards was hosted at lunch by the Speaker of the Assembly. Mr. Gorbachev also received an honorary doctorate from a Korean university. In between shopping expeditions, they met with the Chairman of the Hotel Lotte as well as with leaders from various major business corporations. Taking care of their needs were Mrs. Hyobon Robbins and Andrew Kessler who assisted as translator.

Discussion on the Korean Peninsula

Several prominent scholars discussed the Korean issue, including Robert A. Manning, a research associate at the Gaston Sigur Center for East Asian Studies from George Washington University, Mr. Selig Harrison, a senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Dr. William J. Taylor, Jr., Senior Vice President of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Taylor argued that the only way North and South Korea might miscalculate and go to war is if the rhetoric and pressure for international economic sanctions continues. If sanctions are imposed, Pyongyang might view war as a means to force negotiations, a superior alternative to economic and political isolation. Therefore, if the world wants to avoid war in Korea, sanctions should also be avoided.

A Proposal

H.E. Kenneth Kaunda, former president of Zambia, also proposed that a commission, composed of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Sir Edward Heath, former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, and H.E. Mikhail Gorbachev, be formed to serve as a liaison between the two Koreas and between Korea and the international community. Regardless of the methods, in order for peace on the peninsula to become a reality, trust between the two Koreas must be enhanced. The threats and pressure that characterizes the current approach to Korea only undermine that fundamental trust.

The Middle East

Besides the conflict in Korea, calls were made to end another regional conflict and find a final solution for peace in the Middle East and the Palestinian crisis. Currently, the peace process is maintained as an end in and of itself, which is an artificial goal and can only produce an artificial peace. In order to truly obtain stability in the region, substance must be incorporated into the agenda for negotiations.

The current course was described as being more concerned with when the next meeting would be, rather than resolving this tragedy; in other words, according to Dr. Hanan Mikhail Ashrawi of the Palestinian Independent Commission for the Rights of Citizens, it is a process of "motion without direction." Initially, an end to the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, a precondition for peace in the region, should be sought. Amb. Robert Neumann, former U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Afghanistan and Iran, praised the United States for its role in the peace process, but called for Washington to put more pressure on Israel to seek an honest and proper solution to this tragic conflict. Time is short, it was emphasized, and there is a small window of opportunity, which, if missed, will not be reopened in the near future.

Environmental Recommendations

An entire session, chaired by the Rt. Hon. Edward Schreyer, former Governor General of Canada was devoted to a study of environmental issues. Guest speakers included, H.E. Francisco Bermudez, former President of Peru, Dr. Arthur J. Hanson and Dr. David Scott of Canada.

President Bermudez emphasized the need for a moral framework to guide our interaction with the environment in the future. Man consistently adapts his environment through the societies that people form and the interactions of those societies with their surroundings. In essence, the societies and the behavior of humanity must adjust to act in harmony with, rather than in opposition to, nature.

World Peace Declaration

A declaration was enthusiastically approved and signed by all the participants. In part, it reads, "We appeal to the people of all nations to support a new awakening toward a higher value perspective" that will uphold the sanctity of the family, engender genuine love and care for the earth, and treat the creation responsibly as a precious gift for future generations.

The document was beautifully done in calligraphy by our talented sister Debbie Leighton, who also did the certificates which AULA presented to the Gorbachevs.

Farewell Banquet

As the guests enjoyed themselves at a reception, the Gorbachevs were entertained by the True Parents in their private chambers at the Little Angels Performing Arts Center. One of the pieces of furniture that dominates the room is a 10-foot long oriental panel with a life- size panorama photo of the True Family. The Gorbachevs who have only one daughter and two grandchildren were quite impressed by the size of the True Family.

After the reception, the head table were led into the auditorium for the evening banquet and entertainment. Amb. Phillip V. Sanchez served as Master of Ceremonies. Three events stand out in particular.

The Hon. Walter E. Fauntroy, former U.S. Congressman made a presentation of the recently passed Parents Day Resolution. Passed by the House of Representatives, it calls upon all private citizens and public institutions to observe July 28, 1994 as a day dedicated to the central importance of the family. With the authority of the U.S. Congress, it was a crowning moment to the Peace Conference.

Another very exciting event was the book exchange between Father and Mr. Gorbachev. Father presented to Mr. and Mrs. Gorbachev signed Divine Principle books. Father could not miss an opportunity to witness! At the same time, Mr. Gorbachev reciprocated with an autographed copy of one of his own books. The symbolism was powerful.

A beautiful trophy was also presented to Rev. and Mrs. Moon by the participants of the Second World Peace Conference in recognition of their contributions to world peace. Mr. Gorbachev made the presentation on behalf of the guests..

After a heavenly performance by the Little Angels, photo and more photos, everyone went home satisfied, happy and very tired.

Good-bye

The Second World Peace Conference was clearly one of the most ambitious programs to-date of the Unification Movement. True Parents, surrounded by 42 heads of state and government representing more than 70 nations, were elevated to their just stature and position. It was such a proud moment for us all when True Parents received standing ovations and were publicly recognized by such an august group for their contributions to world peace and development.

As we said good-bye to the guests, without exception, everyone conveyed their respects to True Parents and thanked us for one of the best programs they had ever attended.

We thank the True Parents for allowing us to work on this conference and to make this offering. We hope and pray that upon this foundation, brothers and sisters around the world can expand their works into the Completed Testament Era.

William Selig is the Administrative Director for the Summit Council for World Peace. Additional material was extracted from the Rapporteur's report which was drafted by Thomas Ward.

Blessed Children Witness Tragedy on San Francisco Bay

by Kevin Thompson-Berkeley, CA

The blessed children had been keenly anticipating their spring break Ocean Challenge workshop for quite some time but nothing could have prepared them for what they saw on April 5.

The morning's fishing had gone well, moving around San Francisco Bay checking out various fishing spots while trading off turns at navigating One Hope 150.

At 12 noon we were heading south, just west of the Alameda Naval Air Station. Above us two A6 Intruders were going through their practice maneuvers of "touch and go" landings. Lark Roper, Edgar Tecun, myself, and five 10-year-old blessed children were thoroughly enjoying the spectacle above as we headed for our next anchorage. Suddenly, without warning, the peaceful scene was shattered and joy turned to tragedy. One of the A6 Intruders turned very sharply away from the runway and was so obviously in serious trouble. The plane seemed as if it couldn't right itself, rocking side to side with black smoke pouring out of it. The plane flew dangerously over our heads and seemed to be heading directly towards a tanker anchored in the bay. I feared the worst-then the plane turned suddenly and dived into the water with a crash and small explosion. Just before hitting the water, there appeared to be two orange objects flying out of the plane and hitting the water almost at the same time as the plane.

The plane sank very quickly, leaving behind debris all over the surface. Our boat was approximately a quarter-mile away from the accident. I drove my boat over to the scene to see if there was anyone needing help. At the same time, another vessel was approaching. The vessel stopped and one crewman put on a flotation jacket and jumped into the water where one of the pilots was located. The skipper of this vessel called over to me that there was another airman in the water just a few hundred yards away. I drove my boat over to him, although all I could see was black clothing and I wasn't sure that it was a person. I asked Edgar to get the gaff to pull him in as I got close. He did this; then I lifted the clothing and the head of the airman came out of the water. I asked Lark to keep the boys out of the way and not to let them look at the body in the water because I knew it was going to be a traumatic scene.

Edgar and I tried to lift the man out of the water but because of the gear he was wearing he was too heavy to pull up high enough to get him over the gunwale. All we could do was hang on to him over the side of the boat.

I radioed on Channel 16 to the Coast Guard with one hand while holding on to the man with the other hand. I told the Coast Guard that I had one man by my boat and that he was still alive, and to please send help quickly.

I knew the man was still alive, if only barely, because he stirred and gulped for air a few times. I tried to rouse him and he moved his head. His face was bloodied and battered and his skin was turning blue.

I was just debating whether to jump into the water to give him mouth- to-mouth resuscitation when I saw a Coast Guard boat approaching and I thought it best to just hold on to him until they arrived. I was waving them down as they were stopping to look at various pieces of debris, probably looking for bodies. I was yelling to them that I was holding on to one airman and to please come quickly as he was still alive. Eventually they must have seen me holding on to this man over the side of my boat and they came over.

The young Coast Guard men were not so sure what to do and looked shocked at the sight of the airman in the water. At first they brought their boat up to my boat bow to bow, then the skipper decided to turn around, bow to stern. They passed a kind of stretcher to me first, then the skipper changed his mind and decided it would be best if we tried to haul him up onto his boat. I told him that he was too heavy for me to lift. Then someone from another vessel came and jumped on my boat to help me. Among Edgar, this other man, the Coast Guard men and myself, we were able to lift him aboard the Coast Guard vessel which then headed off toward the base.

Unfortunately, despite all efforts, the pilot was unable to be revived, both of them dying from massive injuries sustained by ejecting so near the water.

In the following days I appeared at a number of Navy inquiries looking into the cause of the tragedy, which cost the lives of two men and the loss of a $35 million plane. I was always referred to as the minister of the Unification Church and received a special award from the Navy for our efforts.

It is my opinion that the pilot died a hero who miraculously saved the plane from hitting the full oil tanker and hence prevented a tragedy of much greater proportions.

This whole episode was a serious awakening for the children on board who realized the preciousness of their own lives.

A Milestone in the Unification Church's Self-Understanding

by Dan Fefferman (UTS `86)

Michael L. Mickler. A History of the Unification Church in America: Emergence of a National Movement, 1959-74. New York: Garland, 1993. 226 pp. $56.00

Dr. Michael Mickler has performed yeoman's work in providing the first published account of the history of American Unficationism in his A History of the Unification Church in America, 1959-1974: the Emergence of a National Movement. Originally developed as a master's thesis, the revised work was published last year as part of Dr. Gordon Melton's series on Cults and Nonconventional Religious Groups by the Garland Publishing Company.

As Mickler's subtitle suggests, the book focuses on the development of a cohesive national movement from the disparate missionary traditions which had established themselves in the United States during the 1960's. Special attention is paid to activities in the San Francisco Bay area, where Mickler sees the three separate groups of Young Oon Kim, Sang Ik Choi and David Kim interacting in a caldron of "missionary jurisdictions, strategic alliances and general grievances" which provide important insights into the U.S. church's early life.

Synopsis

Beginning with Young Oon Kim's mission to Oregon in 1959, Mickler uses missionary diaries, newsletters and published accounts such as John Lofland's sociological study The Doomsday Cult to trace the group's development from a tiny collection of unpromising converts to a highly motivated if poorly organized network of centers with a "national headquarters" in Washington D.C. Mickler pictures Miss Kim's group as growing in fits and starts, frustrated in various attempts at evangelization and never quite able to bridge the communication gap with its audience until the late 1960s when droves of young searchers finally began to join. Miss Kim's group was at some times ecumenical in its approach, at others apocalyptic, and possessed an underlying, occasionally destabilizing, spiritualistic bent. Trouble seemed to follow it whether in the form of offended spouses, worrisome building inspectors, immigration authorities, apocalyptic prophesies, internal schisms or upstart independent missionary groupings wherever it went.

In contrast, Sang Ik Choi's group arrived from Japan in the Bay Area in 1965 with a core of welltrained young Japanese witnessers as front line troops. Mr. Choi had founded and led the Japanese church from 1958-64. His group's youth, tradition and discipline allowed it to succeed more rapidly than Miss Kim's in attracting and training new members. Moreover, Mr. Choi produced a more easily appropriable, socially oriented interpretation of the Principle which stressed communal activities and "conscientious common sense" over theological concerns. "My way is more a character educational way, and Miss Kim's is more of a church theological way," Mr. Choi explained of his Principles of Education vis a vis Miss Kim's The Divine Principles. Mr. Choi's utopianism (versus Miss Kim's ecumenism /apocalypticism) also yielded tangible manifestations such as the International Ideal City project in Boonville and the International Pioneer Academy in San Francisco.

While Miss Kim's Unified Family experienced moderate but scattered growth nationwide and Mrs. Choi's ReEducation Foundation scored spectacular though shortlived successes in the Bay Area, two other missionaries were also active on the American scene. These were Mr. David S.C. Kim of the "Northwest Family" and Col. Bo Hi Pak in Washington, D.C. Both groups were headed by men who held full time jobs in addition to their missionary callings. Though less fertile than Miss Kim's or Mr. Choi's groups, they produced their own incorporated organizations, published separate versions of the teachings of Rev. Moon, and brought their own converts and strong willed personalities to the mix.

Neither Rev. Moon's first visit to the U.S. in 1965 nor his return in 1969 resulted in uniting the groups. Mickler provides a fascinating sketch of several failed attempts at unification, both with Rev. Moon's guidance and without it, from 1965 through 1971.

It is from 1971-1974 that Mickler sees "the emergence of a national movement" in the U.S., through Rev. Moon's direct intervention and on thesc ene leadership. Beginning with a plan to mobilize and intermix members from all three groups through bus teams and a national evangelical crusade, Rev. Moon brought members to New York for training in 1972 and organized ticketselling teams for his first public speeches. This and later campaigns brought significant successes, both in terms of creating a unified tradition under Rev. Moon's leadership and in membership growth. Two important aspects of this growth were the establishment of Unification Church centers in every state with headquarters first in Washington and later New York; and the creation of the One World Crusade, consisting of missionary bus teams under the direction of Mr. David Kim. From a few hundred members in 1971, the movement grew to nearly 3,000 in 1974 and had numerous triumphs to its credit: a nationwide speaking tour culminating in the filling of Madison Square Garden, meetings with national figures, the purchase of significant properties as administrative and training centers, and the establishment of a lucrative source of income through Mobile Fundraising Teams.

Until 1974, however, the movement was still nearly unknown on the national scene. This changed quickly, in part due to the success of Madison Square Garden and subsequent speeches, but even more because of the notoriety gained by Rev. Moon's efforts in support of President Nixon during the Watergate Crisis. This in conjunction with the drama of deprogrammings, leftwing protests, and accusations of brainwashing resulted in a media bonanza and the seemingly permanent label of "cult."

Nevertheless, the end of 1974 left the movement with an exuberant sense of success and invincible optimism. The Church was united under its Father's leadership and was on a tremendous roll. As Church President Neil Salonen stated in December, 1974:

Three years ago...we had only a handful of members less than 300. Since that time...our membership has multiplied ten times.... We have been catapulted from relative obscurity to national prominence... Now, at last we can think in realistic terms of expanding to an international level.

Mickler leaves his work at this point, after a brief word on the "time bomb" of pending persecution and the rise of the "Oakland Family" as a harbingers of things to come.

Analysis

Mickler's work, presented as an unapologetic historical account of the American Unification Church's early years, is a milestone in the Unification Church's self understanding. In eschewing both sociological and theological approaches, Mickler provides the reader with a straightforward, accessible account which will fascinate both UC members and students of new religious movements. He also provides a factual foundation that is likely to serve as the heuristic core for studies in U.S. Unification Church history for decades to come. While it may be a little premature to dub him the Eusebius of American Unification Church History, it may not be an exaggeration.

On the critical side, Professor Mickler has left me wanting more. I may be biased in this sense, since I happened to live through many of the events Mickler deals with and am therefore aware that there is often more to the story. Perhaps a longer work would have been in order. Given his space limitations (226 pages), the work is fairly comprehensive and evenhanded. Some followers of Miss Kim, of which I am one, may object that their spiritual foremother's shortcomings are exposed while Mr. Choi's weaknesses receive scant attention. In my opinion this impression is due more to the fact that Mickler must deal with the troublesome period of 1959-65 for Miss Kim, while he rightfully begins with 1965 for Mr. Choi. The fact that Miss Kim's group achieved approximately equal growth rates to Mr. Choi's during the crucial period of 1967-1971, however, gets lost in the shuffle.

On methodology, Mickler's use of sources such as diaries and newsletters could have been supplemented by personal interviews with the principals, most of whom are still living. His historical (versus theological) approach, though appropriate, left this reader wishing he had told me more about what the actors in his drama thought and felt, in addition to what they did.

Mickler is like Eusebius in another way. He finds himself stuck between the rock of an historian's quest for truth and the hard place of his patron's interests. His work, after all, was produced when he was being supported by a scholarhip administered by an institution headed by one of the principal actors in his study. I believe he has done a creditable balancing job in this respect. If he has skirted some thorny issues such as the sex scandals which decimated Miss Kim's group during the mid 1960s he has tackled others such as the struggles among the Korean missionaries for and against a centralized organization with laudable frankness.

If Mickler's promised second volume, dealing with 1975 to the present, deals as honestly with those years as his first volume dealt with its time period, it is sure to be both revealing and exciting.

Witnessing Through Cable Television

by Ronald E. Pine--Sacramento, CA

The subject of using cable television to air the Divine Principle is not a new idea. However, I believe what I'm doing here in Sacramento may well prove innovative. What I have done is to put several of True Parents documentary video's on our local cable station. Each of these tapes also has my local telephone number and address. Furthermore, I have been handing out flyers that talk about the up-coming 360,000 couple Blessing. The flyer also includes the schedule for the various video's being aired. (see sample flyer).

Can you imagine how exciting it is for my family to set and watch True Mother's 1993 world tour on cable television and then have someone call and say I would like to have more information about Reverend and Mrs. Moon! Well this is exactly what has happened! Here in Sacramento our local cable station reaches 200,000 homes. So, don't you think Spiritual World can mobilize people to be watching at the exact time we place True Parent videos on? Well this has been my experience so far. Though a small number of calls have come in, still the idea works. Moreover, we are just simply showing this aligning world Father and Mothers real heart and worldwide works.

I would like to tell you about the history of the flyer you see in this article. To begin with after developing the my version I faxed a copy to Jin-Sung Moon. After reading it Jin-Sung Nim call me and suggested a few changes so we conspired a few times by telephone and fax and what you now see is his edited version. I tell you brother and sisters, it is really inspiring to get calls from East Garden. For me that's the equivalent of having a re-birth experience. The reason I saying this is to point out that True Children care about what we are doing and want to support our efforts. The question is, are we really trying to Witness and bring both members and promote True Parents position in the public arena?

So, now that I have these wonderful witnessing tools to work with. God has inspired me to put True Parents videos on Cable Television, hand out flyers that promote the up-coming 360,000 couple Blessing and then simply follow-up with the prepared people who respond. This is a dream come true my only desire is that the techniques I'm pioneering here in Sacramento can be duplicated all over America. That hundreds of you, my brothers and sisters in faith, can use True Parents videos, Blessing Flyers, Find Your Ideal Mate advertisement etc., as tools to expand your out-reach.

The advent of cable television is in our hands now, all we have to do is use it properly. I truly hope some of you out their can take these ideas and improve upon them. What better way is their for us to proclaim True Father as the Messiah than letting millions of people watch True Mother's worldwide tour, the 30,000 couple Blessing and Father's biography on cable television.

1. The Great Victory of the True Parents & the Completed Testament Age, produced in Korea with English duped in.

Gay mistake

I delivered a copy of Richard Choen's "Healing Homosexuality" to be aired by Access Sacramento. Surprisingly, Access mistakenly aired Richard's one hour tape "Healing Homosexuality" in the time slot designated for the Gay & Lesbianism Hour. The next day many homosexual's called and complained if Access makes this mistake again they will stop airing their weekly video's! Also, the Access manager (Kim) complained to me for not describing in detail what this tape was all about. She even asked me not to air the video again. At the same time another manager came in the room and said Kim has no right to stop us from airing this tape and that's Kim's statement is censorship.

After the one hour presentation of Richard's program I also included True Father's 12 minute biography video(currently being used at the True Children Tour). So you can imagine, thousands of people who normally watch Gay & Lesbian one hour talk show are now viewing Richard's teaching about True Love, how God heals through the ideal family and True Father's life story with scenes of the 30,000 couple blessing. This really gives God another victory! Right after the taped aired a person called me and said we wants to learn more about Richard Choen and will consider Reverend Moon's teachings.

My conclusion is, when we go forward, follow God's calling we never now how the Spiritual World will work. How can I possibly know or foresee when I dropped off Richard's video that the Access manager would mistakenly air this video in the Gay & Lesbian weekly one hour time slot?

Update on advertising

For those who read my article "Advertising and the Heart to Witness" [UNews, December 1993] you should know some members are now using the Ideal Mate ad. They have called to tell me they have successfully found contacts by running the ad. So, members are calling and asking how they can follow up? Isn't that wonderful! Other UC members can find spiritual children by placing a simple Ideal Mate advertisement in the dateline section of their local newspaper.

Another good news, one UC member called me and said he read a newspaper ad originally written by Dr. Edwin Ang and soon after joined. Of course Dr. Ang's ad was being used in 1975. But the message is still the same. We can find prepared people if we reach out and allow the Spiritual World to work.

Vision of North Korea Surrendering to True Parents

by Ronald E. Pine
Experienced in 1972

Preface

This vision was given to me during a Sunday service. The service was being held while on an outing at the ocean on a beach near Washington, D.C. The service was led by Bill Torey sometime in 1972. While Bill was speaking, my spiritual eyes were opened by God and the vision I will now describe in detail was shown to me.

Vision

I saw myself in South Korea along with 3,000 Unification Church members. We were gathering together getting on buses and heading north. While driving north we began hearing the sounds of war, guns being fired, bombs dropping, etc., and we saw American soldiers running and retreating in every direction. As we kept on driving north, I began to see us approaching a range of mountains; on top of them was the American army engaged in a pitched battle with the North Korean army. I could see people dying everywhere; the situation was in complete turmoil.

American soldiers tried to stop us from driving on so all of us got off the buses and began walking up a narrow mountain road. We were following True Parents and the road led directly up the mountainside and through the main battle lines of the American army. At the same time I could see many soldiers dying all around us and they were trying to tell us to go back or we would all be killed, too. None of us staying with True Parents were being hurt. Some of the members, however, became afraid and tried to run away and were immediately killed.

When we reached the crest of the mountains, I saw to my right side up on top of another hill many people from the media. They were taking pictures of us and reporting this extraordinary event to the American people through the newspapers. I also saw my parents along with the parents of other UC members meeting the American president and demanding our rescue. At this time I then saw American bombers coming and the American army stopped retreating with the battle line now being held. The retreat was stopped because of the newspaper articles reporting about us possibly being killed. This the American people would not allow. At this time the American army battle lines gave way and we then marched through and on down the hillside. So we were marching behind True Parents directly into gunfire from the North Koreans. After we got in front of the American soldiers and were in between the North Korean and American armies, Father ordered us to sit down circling around him and Mother. We did so and stayed there for three days and nights singing and praying. During this time some members ran away and were consequently killed.

After the three-day period, True Parents stood up and said we will now march forward to Pyongyang. In a faithful manner we all stood up and began marching towards the North Korean battle line. I was in the front line marching on the far right side. I saw the Koreans shooting at us; however, the bullets did not hit anyone. They simply went around and killed the American soldiers who were following us as we marched forward. As we got closer and closer, I could actually see the Koreans aiming and shooting directly at us. They began realizing the bullets were going around us and killing the American soldiers. It was amazing; they kept firing at point-blank range and could not kill us. When we finally got within a few feet of their front line, the Koreans began throwing down their guns. Their battle line collapsed and we kept marching forward. The Korean soldiers began to join us and they started marching behind us. At that time their officers began to kill their own soldiers for dropping their guns and joining our ranks. The North Koreans quickly turned and immediately killed their own officers.

By now the battle was completely over. The entire North Korean army dropped their guns and followed our small group of 3,000 members with True Parents at our center. We continued to march another three days towards Pyongyang. Both the North Korean and American armies were following us. Just before reaching Pyongyang, I saw an airplane flying towards China with Kim Il Sung on board. We then reached the city's central plaza and held a celebration rally, after which time True Father said we will now march on to China.

This is the end of my vision. I then began to become aware that the church service was still going on. After the service I did not tell anyone of this. I have only told the story a few times in 22 years. However, I have now decided to write it down for the sake of posterity. This then is the first written version that has been put on paper, written down March 2, 1994.

At the time of this vision there were only 1680 couples Blessed worldwide.

UTS: Mount Horeb, The Mountain of Calling For Moses

by Shinobu Ishimaru-Barrytown, NY

"I am a Japanese Christian". It sounds strange in Western society (in Japan too), but this phrase has described me since my birth. My parents converted to Catholicism as teenagers right after World War II. They met each other in the Catholic Church and married. After my twentieth year one more strange label was added to my self description, "Unificationist". A Japanese Catholic Unificationist, that is my religious identity.

Presently, one of the most important periods of my life is coming to a conclusion at the Unification Theological Seminary. When I entered UTS three years ago, I set the goal of my Seminary life to find my second calling from God. My first calling from God took place when I entered the Catholic Seminary in Japan in 1980 in order to become a priest. Within a year I discovered that the second coming had already taken place, and that his name is Sun Myung Moon. My spiritual father, a 1992 UTS graduate, taught me this new message while we were in the Catholic Seminary. After joining the Unification Church he had returned to the Catholic Seminary in order to make a bridge between the Unification Movement and the Catholic Church. After being taught the Divine principle, I began to share in his ecumenical vision.

We began to share the message with other students, resulting in a worried response form the Director of the Seminary as well as the Bishops of Japan. In 1983 my spiritual father was banished from the Catholic Seminary. One of the main justifications for his dismissal was the charge that the Unification Church wanted to invade the Catholic Seminary in Japan as they had done in the USA. Is it true? This charge seemed to foreshadow my destiny to come here, UTS. I was permitted to stay in the Seminary for a few more years, but I felt imprisoned. I believed that the best way for me to serve God was to become a priest, so I stayed and learned patience, humility and prayer. During those days the fact that there were Unificationist missionaries in Communist countries was my only consolation. I shed tears for Jesus Christ and for the Catholic Church. However, in spite of my effort and prayer, I went through the same course as my spiritual father when I was expelled two years later.

From that day on, I realized that the road to priesthood was closed to me. It also meant that my vision to bring the Catholic and Unification Church together became more difficult. As a result, I had to wander throughout the desert of "Midian" like Moses. Moses got married to Zipporah and she bore him a son in the wilderness of Midian. During those days I also received the Blessing. When my wife conceived our first son, I arrived at UTS.

The Seminary

UTS is my place of calling as Mount Horeb was for Moses. Whenever I recalled the Catholic church, I wept in my mind, as Paul confessed great grief and pain in his heart (Romans 9:2). I held great expectation to meet God and True Parents at UTS and to receive my second calling. In fact, I feel this has just recently been fulfilled, nearly three years after my arrival at UTS.

From the first term everything that happened here at UTS was new and inspiring, those experiences will remain as sweet memories. I learned many things from the President, Faculty and other students here at UTS. To encounter others in a meaningful way is growth. Living and studying among students from such varied backgrounds helped me to reflect on myself and my nationality. American, British, Korean, German, Eastern European, Filipino... I built lasting friendships that drew me beyond the borders of my own nationalism. In terms of religious boundaries, the faculty is composed of many denominations, there are the Unificationists and non-unificationists, Catholics, Methodists and Greek Orthodox. Also represented are visiting guest lecturers from all the world faiths. Having teachers with different theological orientations helped me to integrate vast areas of thought which helped me to overcome denominationalism. I realized that if my goal is to help Christianity, that I have to be able to understand the full scope of Christian faith and experience.

The grand finale of my UTS experience was the Annual President S.C. Kim Oratorical Contest. Eight finalists were chosen from the preliminaries. As a non-native English speaker, I didn't imagine that I would make it to the finals, let alone come in second place. I was worried about my ability to speak as I am nearly "dumb" in English. After the finalists were chosen only one day remained until the finals. This was a crucial time of preparation for me as I practiced and practiced my prophetic sermon. I really felt the spirit and God's heart in my topic: "Where there is no God, people suffer". In my conclusion I said that God sends us to lead people out of individualism and immorality. As God gave Moses his mission on Mount Horeb, I felt him give me mine through my own words. It was a meaningful moment for me. It was the most wonderful experience to feel God, here at hand.

If you want to hear God's voice again, come to UTS. The Spirit of God is moving over UTS to find a resting place, a home in your heart. Gratitude and glory to UTS, Mt. Horeb.
