Hyung Jin Moon, August 22, 2011

Global citizen does not mean "modern man." You know, I have a very nice mobile phone. Oh, yes I'm a global man. That is not what True Father is talking about when he is talking about a global citizen! He's talking about when we see the world not with human eyes but through the eyes of God. He is teaching that when we see the world from God's perspective, from the parents' perspective, we can see the world as our children. We can love and sacrifice for the world because its people are our children. Even though we are betrayed and scorned, we can still love.

In the end, it is that type of parental love that defeats all evil. It is that type of love that defeats the worst satan, the worst obstacle, the worst archangel. True love is always patient. True love is never victorious overnight. It always takes time. That's why love is just like faith. We have ups and downs in our life of faith. We sometimes believe and have faith, but also when we love others we have hard times. Sometimes when a person -- maybe our own child -- hurts us, it's very hard to love him. But that's why it takes practice. That is why true love must be inherited.

Address to a Consultation Meeting on the proposal for an inter-religious council at the UN Boothroyd Room, Portcullis House, House of Commons, London, UK August 31, 2010

Distinguished British leaders from all walks of life, Ambassadors of Peace, Ladies and Gentlemen! Dr. Braybrooke and Imam Sajid, thank you for your inspiring, eloquent words and for gracing this occasion with your presence, and for your lifelong commitment in service to God and global peace.

It is my distinct honor and privilege to stand before you today in this historic venue, the "mother of all parliaments," and to share with you a few words on behalf of my parents, Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, Father and Mother Moon.

I am very happy to be in the UK, and I want to thank you sincerely for taking time to participate in today's program, dedicated to consideration of my father's vision for an inter-religious council at the United Nations.

It was ten years ago, August 2000, that my father outlined his vision at a speech he delivered at the United Nations. He explained that just as each of us has both a mind and a body, and just as each one of us is both a spiritual being and a material or physical being, so too are human institutions and organizations. They too must have a mind and a spiritual center.

I am reminded that the first General Assembly of the United Nations was convened here in London, in 1946, at the Central Hall of the Methodist Church. I also note that the first meeting of the British parliament took place in Westminster Abbey. I believe England has always understood the necessary link between spiritual principles and values, on the one hand, and the public sphere of social, political, and economic institutions, on the other hand.

My father has great respect for the United Nations. Had it not been for the United Nations Peace Force, comprised of 16 nations, not only would the nation of South Korea not exist today as a free and democratic society where religion has flourished, but neither would my father have survived to carry out his providential mission. Nor would I be here today. For, 60 years ago, on October 14, 1950, he was about to be executed in a North Korean prison camp where he had been imprisoned by the communist authorities for practicing his faith.

On that day, miraculously, the UN peace force liberated my father from Hungnam concentration camp. Gen. Alexander Haig, former US Secretary of State and long-time friend of my father, led the bombing raid that liberated my father and spared him from certain death.

In his message at the United Nations in the year 2000, my father explained that the UN would not be able to fulfill its mission without creating a council that would uphold the spiritual wisdom and heritage of humanity, representing God's guidance for all of us. Toward this end, he recommended that there be a senate or upper house of spiritual leaders within the UN system, perhaps similar to your very own House of Lords. This council would include exemplary and mature representatives and learned advocates of the world's spiritual traditions.

Throughout its history, this nation has been a great champion of religious freedom and interfaith cooperation. In virtually every city, village and hamlet, there are Sikhs and Jains, Muslims and Jews, Hindus and Buddhists, Protestants and Catholics. In many cities there are interfaith councils. I believe all of you can appreciate the value of my father's proposal. It is an idea whose time has come.

I was recently in Jerusalem, where I had the opportunity to meet with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders, and representative leaders of Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and the Druze tradition. Everyone expressed a strong desire for peace and explained that peace is an ideal that stands at the center of their sacred scriptures. At our UPF Consultation in Jerusalem they affirmed wholeheartedly the importance of Father Moon's vision for an interfaith council, for a UN centered on God. Father Moon sometimes calls this ideal a "Parent UN" or an "Abel UN."

A few weeks ago I met with Hindu leaders in Nepal and Buddhist leaders in Lumbini, birthplace of Lord Buddha. Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains fully appreciate and understand that lasting solutions to our global problems and a comprehensive peace cannot be realized without a spiritual awakening, and the full participation of those who affirm and practice spiritual principles.

We all realize that peace is not simply the cessation of conflict. Rather, as we have learned from the great teachers and prophets of the ages, peace is much more than a political, economic, or military accomplishment. Peace is rooted in our relationship with God. Hence, for example, Muslims say, salaam alekhem, Jews say shalom, Hindus say shanti, and Christians call Jesus the prince of peace.

When we are lacking in spiritual discipline and wisdom, peace is not possible. Peace arises when we are in a right relationship with God, when our mind and body are united. If we are people of internal struggle, selfishness, and sin, then all our efforts in this world will bear no good fruit but will only lead to struggle and conflict.

Father Moon teaches us that the root of peace is the family. For this reason, he has championed the international and inter-religious World Peace Holy Blessing ceremonies, bringing together couples from every corner of the world, calling each to dedicate their marriage and family to God's ideal of true love and universal peace. There is no better way to create a world of peace than by strengthening marriages and building God-centered families. Father Moon teaches us that peace is rooted in the family, that the family is rooted in God, and that God's essence is true love.

In this way, on the foundation of the individual and family centered on God, we can expand the realm of peace to other levels, to the tribe, society, nation, and world.

Jesus instructed his disciples to pray centering not on a human kingdom but "God's kingdom." The Kingdom of God is a world of peace, a world that fulfills the hope of all ages and all religions for a unified world of peace.

Jesus also called his disciples to repent and to forgive our enemies, and to work to deliver humanity from the bondage of sin. This is a formula for peace.

As important as political and secular social movements have been, God's central providence throughout history has been led by the founders of the great religions. That process continues today. We ignore the essential and necessary importance of religion only at our peril. Those who advocate atheism, moral relativism, and selfish materialism are leading humanity down a wrong path that leads only to destruction.

Likewise, only nations who center on God's true love should stand in central positions in the world today.

Hence my father has called the UN to include the great faith traditions in its noble mission, and establish a council within the UN system. Otherwise, the efforts of the UN will fall short of their objective, and humanity will suffer. We cannot disregard the truths of God that religion brings.

Father Moon was called to his great messianic mission by God, in a direct encounter with Jesus Christ, when he was only 16 years old. In 1960, he established the position of True Parents, together with my mother, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. They stand in the position of True Parents with the mission to fulfill the mission of Jesus and complete God's providence at this time in history, working hand in hand with God-centered people of all faiths.

Recently, my father published his autobiography, entitled, As a Peace Loving Global Citizen. It has been at the top of the best-seller charts in Korea for almost two years. It has now been published in English. I encourage you all to read this fascinating and inspiring book. Through it, you will learn more about my father's vision, his character, and his mission at this time in history.

Indeed, through his autobiography, I invite each one of you to seek to understand the heart with which he has so relentlessly pursued his mission to bring about lasting world peace. A complimentary copy of Father Moon's autobiography is being made available to each one of you today. Our gathering here today marks the official launch of his autobiography here in Britain. Please read it and take its message to heart, as it provides many insights into the way to build a deeper relationship with God.

In conclusion, I want to thank each one of you, who represent the people of this great nation and the world's great faith traditions.

I hope that each of you will make a determined effort to promote my Father's vision for an inter-religious council at the UN. More importantly I hope you will support him in his wider mission to establish God's Kingdom on this earth.

Let us work together to build one family under God, and a world of universal peace. I believe this great nation and its people can play a central role in God's providence at this time. I know that True Parents pray about this each and every day.

Thank you for attention. God bless you, your families, and this great nation.

UPF President Hyung Jin Moon Visits Europe

August 31, 2010
UPF International

London, UK -- The UPF President, Dr. Hyung Jin Moon, has just completed a quick tour of Europe visiting UPF volunteers, Ambassadors for Peace and members of the Unification faith community in Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The tour began with a visit to the Rome and the Vatican on August 24-25 immediately following the conclusion of the Middle East Peace Initiative program in Jerusalem, and ended August 31 with a public meeting in the House of Commons in London, England.

The importance of better harmony and cooperation among believers of all faiths is a central thrust of UPF's work around the world, and during the tour the UPF president and his delegation, which included UPF President Dr. Thomas Walsh and Secretary General Taj Hamad, made a special point of visiting locations with a strong ties to Europe's religious heritage.

In Italy, they visited St. Peter's in Rome, and followed the tradition of ascending the Scala Santa, or "Holy Staircase" brought from Jerusalem to Rome, on their knees. "We cannot complain or stop because of pain," he commented at the top of the climb. "If we don't focus on the internal meaning, our body becomes the subject and we cannot continue. This is a good training for mind and body unity and a test of the strength of our faith."

In Germany, the group visited the Wartburg Castle, where Martin Luther was held in protective custody from May 1521 to March 1522 by his friend and benefactor Frederick the Wise, following Luther's excommunication by Pope Leo X. While safe in the castle, Luther translated the New Testament into German in just ten weeks.

Of course, Europe also has a darker history of religious persecution, perhaps none worse than the treatment of the Jews under the Nazi regime, and the tour group also visited the Buchenwald concentration camp, where more than 56,000 died at the hands of the SS.

Hyung Jin and his wife, Yeon Ah Moon, also made an unscheduled trip to France to visit the families of a young man recently killed in a bus accident and a young woman still hospitalized from the same incident. He spoke with feeling on the importance of parents taking time with each of their children, no matter how busy they are. "The moments a child will remember the most are the moments that he or she spent personally with his or her parents," he said.

Transformation of society is not just a matter of institutional change, but of change in the human heart. On the final day of the tour, Dr. Moon spoke at an event in the House of Commons in the British Parliament, where he encouraged the gathered Ambassadors for Peace to make every effort to secure formal British support for UPF's proposed inter-religious council at the United Nations. During August, UPF chapters throughout the world held similar consultations, with notable contributions coming from Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Sierra Leone, and Switzerland.

Faith is the Way of Experience by Rev. Jae-seok Lee

Cheon Bok Gung, Yongsan Seoul Korea

Welcoming Remarks by Hyung Jin Nim:

Hello, brothers and sisters. We are in France. You can see the Eiffel tower behind us. In August of 1965, Father came here and established a holy ground. We were not actually scheduled to come to France, but recently, a second generation member passed into the spiritual world. For that reason, we came to France. We can see many miraculous things happening here. God is protecting all the blessed members from around the world. So we had an offering service to God and True Parents. Today, you will be listening to the sermon of Rev. Jae-seok Lee in Korea and we will return and meet you in Korea next Sunday. From France, we would like to greet you.

Main Sermon by Rev. Jae-seok Lee

Hello, everyone. The morning and the afternoon worship services' atmosphere was quite similar, I felt. First, let us read from the words of our True Parents: Life, Love, and the World of the Eternal Soul, pages 231-235.

For the people of faith, learning through experience is absolutely necessary. This is the way we find out about God's character and at the same time, we can feel the bond or the internal Shim Jung we can have. The path of learning through experience is the only way we can feel this. Through a life of faith, we can feel happiness and a new hope. This can only happen though this process of learning through experience.

The heart has a gateway called the shimmun. When we feel we can pray very well, this means we are closer to God and feel Him closer to us. So if we keep going inward, all the way deep down, we meet God's gateway. When God's gateway and the gateway to our own heart are completely one with each other, we can feel God's love and heart and be in a position to learn though experience.

What is important to one who wants to live a life of faith? It is to make sure that the gateway to our own heart coincides with the gateway to God's heart. We must always be prepared for this. In our lives, we must have the attitude of matching ourselves to God. We must always open our hearts to God's gateway and have our own gateway pointed towards heaven all the time.

The more we match our gateway to God's gateway, the more we will be able to feel things we have not been able to feel before, and develop the field of our heart and go into the realm where our heart resonates with the heart of God. When our heart resonates with God, we can develop our heartistic senses. In those vibrations, we can lose the consciousness of ourselves and become stronger spiritually and have spiritual experiences. Therefore, this kind of learning through experience is very important for our life of faith.

I would like to summarize what Father said. Father talks about the importance of a life of faith where we learn through experience. Why is this so important? That is because we are able to establish bonds with God's Shim Jung and character. Also, we are able to feel a new heart and experience God. When we experience God, we feel happiness.

What is the method for that kind of faith through experience? The gateway to my heart and the gateway to God's heart have to meet. They have to be one. When that standard is met, when we open our heart in the direction of God's heart, we can feel the wavelength of God's heart and we can vibrate in resonance with God's heart. Then God's heart will explode within me. I will feel the tremendous vibrations of God's heart. That is how God enters into my heart. In other words, when our wavelength matches God's wavelength, we are able to be one with God.

What happens then? Our spiritual strength increases and we are able to lead a life of faith. The field of our heart becomes developed. We are purified, we lose our fallen nature and we are able to have spiritual experiences. What Father emphasizes again and again is that we cannot trust a person who does not have experience, although he may have a life of faith. We must experience our life of faith.

Right now, our Ambassadors for Peace know more and more about the Principle. However, a person who has not met God, who has not yet experienced faith, from True Parent's position, cannot be trusted. This is a conclusion we can draw from today's words.

Let us think for a moment. What is religion? Religion is a pathway to God. There are many religions on the earth and new ones are created every day, and some religions are disappearing every day. What is the purpose of religion? The primary pathway to God is prayer. When you see someone praying a lot, you say that person has a lot of faith. And the person you never see praying, you must conclude that that person must not have a very good life of faith. So we can say that prayer represents faith.

We cannot see God. How can we have a real sense of God and believe in a God that cannot be seen? To believe in God means to meet God through prayer. What happens when we meet God and we are able to come to know God? We come to resemble Him. According to the principles that we have studied, my heart becomes God's heart and my character becomes God's character. I become the embodiment of God, the house or holy temple of God. This is the completion of human beings which is taught in the Principle of Creation.

All religions talk about prayer and a life of faith. What is the difference between these religions? All religions are the way individuals seek God. The founder of every religion created a path for individuals to meet God. What is the greatness of Father's way? They have established a religion of True Parents and a way for families to establish the Kingdom of Heaven within themselves.

We attend the Unification Church and we need to understand the difference between the Unification Church and other religions. This is the difference: other religions establish the way for individuals to seek salvation and to meet God; the Unification Church has graduated beyond that to go to a new level where as a family unit we seek after God. That is why we took down the sign board for HSA-UWC and put up the symbol for the Family Federation.

So why did we go back to the Unification Church? Some people asked me about that. We still need a way of individual salvation before the Blessing. There needs to be a way of individual salvation for the 6.7 billion people in order for them to receive the Blessing. That is why we re-established the Unification Church. Is that clear? Do you understand?

You and I both pray. We pray hard, but it is not easy to meet God, to find the gateway to our heart and match it to the gateway to God's heart. We do not really understand where our gateway is and we cannot really sense where God's gateway is.

What is God's wavelength? What is the number? On the television, for example, each channel has its own wavelength. With the radio, if we do not get the wavelength exactly right, it is very noisy. We get a lot of static. So if you want to listen to the radio, you need to make sure you have the correct wavelength. In order to experience God, in order to resonate with God, in order to meet God, we need to match God's wavelength.

Now that science is very developed, the evidence of meeting God can be seen through the brainwaves. Our general life consists of regular length waves called beta waves. When we are praying, our wavelengths become longer, alpha waves. We keep going and we develop zeta waves, what the Buddhists refer to as the state of nothingness. That is where we meet God. That state takes us beyond the world of phenomenon and into the world of essence. That is also a certain kind of technique. How do people do that? There is an incredible technique involved in living as human beings. We need to have true love and we need to inherit true love to be true human beings.

What do you think the most difficult thing in this world is? It is to love human beings. That is actually the most difficult thing to do in the world. How is it difficult? It means that love requires a great deal of technique. We need to not only study the technique of love, but practice it. We need the habit of loving people.

Within our subconscious, God's character needs to be imbedded into us. Prayer is the way for us to meet God and to come to resemble God. That is why we come to church, to discover God. We need to meet God. That is where the life of faith begins. Meeting God is the necessary condition to have a life of faith with God who cannot be seen.

Chehul means learning through experience. Father repeated that word many times. Chehul means to feel with our bodies, to feel through experience. To feel God with our bodies is where faith begins in earnest.

The title of today's sermon is The Faith of Experience. We need to experience God, then we begin to change. We have fallen nature. There are many ways to meet God. Sometimes I go into God and sometimes God comes into me. I meet God and experience His character of goodness, and that character permeates my heart. God's divine nature permeates me and is inscribed on my heart.

As I continue my life of faith, my subconscious which is filled with fallen nature is continuously permeated with God's character, then gradually my heart becomes the same as God's. Gradually I become a better person, a more honest person, a more sincere person, a more humble person. My fallen nature is pushed out as my heart is filled with God's nature and God's character.

Father talks about our main job and our part time job. Our main job and primary purpose is to live life as original human beings, to complete the principle within us. Look at our daily lives. We spend a lot of time with what is secondary in our lives. But how much effort are we spending on becoming true human beings? Of course, we have Hoon Dok Hae and go to worship and make effort, but actually we are spending more time in our lives on things that are secondary -- to go to elementary school, middle school, high school, university, then our jobs. These things are all secondary.

Ms. Yuna Kim won the gold medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Another Korean athlete was lifting 5000 kilograms a day. That's how she trained to be an Olympic champion. Yet does that mean she became a perfect person? No. How much time are we investing in perfecting our character to resemble God? If we think honestly about it, we are not investing enough time.

In the Buddhist temple, there is an engraved saying: "Study until you die." If you receive worldly honor or glory, it doesn't mean you have become a completed person. Don't get caught up in seeking public recognition. Rather, you should pray and meditate.

There is a story about a young Russian Orthodox priest who watched an old lady come to church and faithfully pray. As time passed, the old lady eventually approached the priest and asked, "Why doesn't God appear to me? I pray every day without fail!" The young priest answered, "You wonder why God doesn't answer you but you don't give Him a chance. You are always too busy talking about yourself in your prayers. Why don't you try sitting in silence and listening for a change?" Then the grandmother tried his advice and she had an incredible experience. God came to her and she was very moved.

Like children who are always demanding things from their parents, we have to grow past this stage. There is a root of consciousness, a sixth sense, that opens our communication with God. We have to develop this by making time to pray. Then our body will shake with His presence.

If we feel our life is too busy and we don't make time to pray and meditate, then we will be missing the most important thing in our lives. Our primary purpose in life is to grow our heart and consciousness to resonate with God. Right now, our lives are pushed along like a twig in a river. We sometimes feel out of control, with no room for choices, only responsibilities. Yet if we take a moment to still our minds, we can maintain a connection with God. In muddy water, if it is still, the dirt will fall to the bottom and the water will become clear. In the Bible, it says, "Only the pure of heart will see God." In this way, we should remember to stop and meditate and pray daily.

If we concentrate enough and seek to still our minds, we can hear our own heart beat. But we don't need to be a meditation acrobat. We only need to quiet our mind and focus on True Father's words on a daily basis as we seek to practice true love. This is the purpose of Hoon Dok Hae.

There are three ways to incorporate God's words into our lives: intellectually, heartistically by practicing true love, and through prayer. Not everyone can do the first two, but everyone can take time to pray. No matter how busy your schedule is, please take time to meet God in this way. If you have this attitude, God will speak to you, even in the sound of the wind.

The East and West often have opposite ways of doing things. In the Western Christian world, people are lead by the words in the Bible which says, "The Heavenly Kingdom belongs to those who take it." [Matthew 11:12] But in the East, we tend to be more quiet and invite God into our lives. Some people like to copy True Father's words by hand. This gives them a deep experience, which we have heard from many Korean followers.

Overall, Hoon Dok Hae is done for the purpose of involving True Parents in our lives. If we can feel close to True Parents, we will feel close to God. Let our minds be quiet and resonate with True Father's words. If you connect with a certain verse or phrase, allow your heart to bond with it as you experience joy. You must first feel joy and happiness in order to love others.

We are now at the palace of God. Do you feel joy, or are you burdened with worries? Do you feel distracted by your duties of work, family, or distributing Father's book? While in church, we should put aside our worries and renew ourselves by feeling the support of others. Worries come from feeling alone. We need to live with God and True Parents. We should seek to be with them.

Notes:

Matthew, chapter 11

1: And when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

2: Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples

3: and said to him, "Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?"

4: And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see:

5: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.

6: And blessed is he who takes no offense at me."

7: As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?

8: Why then did you go out? To see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment are in kings' houses.

9: Why then did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

10: This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.'

11: Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12: From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force.

13: For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John;

14: and if you are willing to accept it, he is Eli'jah who is to come.

15: He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

16: "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates,

17: `We piped to you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not mourn.'

18: For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon';

19: the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."

20: Then he began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.

21: "Woe to you, Chora'zin! woe to you, Beth-sa'ida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22: But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

23: And you, Caper'na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24: But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you."

25: At that time Jesus declared, "I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes;

26: yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.

27: All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30: For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

International President Hyung Jin Moon's Speech in Germany

August 29, 2010
Limburg, Germany

HyungJinMoon-100829b.jpg

Brothers and sisters, it is really great to see all of you here in Germany today. We don't have so much time together. So we'll want to focus on something that is very central to our spiritual life.

True Parents' worldwide foundation

As you know, the broad foundation True Parents created is absolutely a miracle. I remember, when I was at Harvard University, we had to study also all these different religions, like Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. We also had to study these new movements like the Mormon tradition, the Baha'is, the Hare Krishnas, the Soka Gakkai and other traditions. And in that course we also had to study the Unification Church. Actually it was very much fun. It was not done in a negative way at all, but we were treated in a very fair manner. They taught how Father started, how he received the revelation from Jesus and his meeting with Jesus. We also learned how he was later tortured and put into prison and eventually was received by heads of states -- very much according to the text book. So this was very surprising. It was so positive. It was unlike anything I had seen before. I was so surprised.

In Germany, we have maybe 400 to 500 blessed families and sometimes we feel very small. Islam is growing, many people are searching on different avenues. We may feel very small as a religious community and we don't really have a sufficient foundation. We have to remember, before we move forward, how good God has been in bringing us up to this point. Yes, "Gott ist groß!" We have to realize that there is no religion, in past or present, that has accomplished so much all the way from nothing until the world level while the founder is still alive. There is not one example.

In Christianity, Jesus died after doing his mission for three years. If you study Buddhism, you realize, although Buddha has done great, he was not able to go to the world level. Even looking at Islam, Mecca and Medina became Muslim cities during the lifetime of the Prophet, but Islam was not yet able to move to the world level. Also when we look at other world religions, like the Mormons during the life of their founder Joseph Smith, or the Baha'is during the life of their founder Baha'u'llah who died in prison -- none of them was able to move to the world stage. The world's religious leaders were not able to move to the world stage during their lifetime on earth. They were always persecuted and sometimes even killed.

Living a life of prayer

The fact that True Parents went from literally nothing, from the poverty stricken land of North Korea, to the world wide level, is unheard in all other religions. So we have to be proud of the history of the Unification Church and what we have accomplished. As you know, the real power behind True Parents' success, behind their ability to touch millions around the world, is because of the Messianic mission given to them by God. Central to that Messianic mission is their direct relationship with God. And that relationship is built upon a life of prayer.

Also for us a prayer life is very essential. It goes beyond the mundane and connects us to the transcendental, to God. But we have to examine what kind of prayer we are praying. Have you ever wondered, why God is not answering our prayers? I have asked Him so many times, I beg him, but why don't I get answers to my prayers? You are laughing, maybe you have similar experiences.

In Math 6.9 Jesus is teaching us how to pray. Many people have been praying just repeating the Lord's Prayer. But when Jesus talked about prayer, there are a few things he taught: don't just pray for yourself, don't go out on the streets and pray openly, this is not a prayer, He said, but pray in your room, to pray openly on the streets -- that is not a prayer. Go into your room by yourself and close the door. He also said, God knows what you mean. This is how I want you to pray. If you know the Lord's Prayer please speak it with me in English. This is what he said:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

Amen

Many people around the world feel they merely have to recite this prayer. But in reality Jesus is giving us a formula how to pray. He said, this is how I want you to pray. The first thing he said was: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. That means very simply praising God first. Whenever we open our mouth for prayer, do we praise God first? Or do we say, gosh, I have a big meeting today, bless me! Oh God, there is this big contract and I need to get this contract, God bless this meeting! Oh God, I take a big test today. When we look at our prayer, we ask God very quickly for what we need first. This is called a petition prayer. Jesus said, this is not the right way to pray. So he tells us, the first thing you must do, whenever you open your mouth to pray, never pray for yourself first! Always praise God first!

The second thing he said: Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. That means: thy kingdom come, thy will be done. Usually we are praying: My kingdom come, my will be done. I need this or that. God help me with this and that. But we should always remember what Jesus said: First, praise God, second, not my but thy kingdom come. It doesn't mean that our prayers are not necessary. What it means is that we have to have the right order. We have to have the right set. Because this relationship it not what we decided but it is God who decides the rules of this relationship. This relationship is a gift, right? So it is not on our terms; it is not we that determine this relationship. It is in fact the opposite. If we want to enter into this relationship it is always on God's terms first. This is what Jesus meant: Thy kingdom come.

Then, at the third stage, he said: Give us today our daily bread . That means: you can pray for what you need. So you have permission to pray for what you need on the third stage. Give us our daily bread. At that time in Jerusalem everybody was concerned what he is going to eat on that day. In the modern world we have different concerns, about school, about children and the family, about business etc. This is the same as the prayer and give us today our daily bread.

And then Jesus reminds us of the fourth stage of prayer. What did he say? Forgive us our sins! And allow us to forgive those who trespass against us. We must remember that we all have sin. We are not perfect in front of our Heavenly Father. So we need forgiveness. There is nobody who doesn't need forgiveness. And God does forgive us. As God forgives us, we also learn how to forgive others who hurt us. That doesn't mean you should let people walk all over you, step on you like a door mat. That's not the meaning of it. But it means, even though we defend ourselves, we don't hold any resentment or malignancy in our heart.

In the last stage he says: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. That means not to use our live for ourselves, use our lives for deliverance, to help save others. This is what Jesus taught us in his prayer.

Correcting our prayer life

If we look at our prayer life, and when we start praying, we should switch from the way we are used to pray. You will see, your life will begin to change. Not only your prayer life, not only your mind and your heart, but actually your life will start changing. It is in this very important relationship that we have to center ourselves in the right way. Many people in the modern world believe God is like a very big vending machine. Do you have vending machines in Germany? You know what that is? You put some money inside, press the button and the candy comes out. There are many who try to tell you how to get all the candy you want in your life.

They suggest telling you the secret how you can get anything you want from God or the universe. Put the money in and the candy will come out. If it doesn't come out, just kick it a couple of times and it will come out. But this is not the right relationship -- the real issue in our relationship with God. When we pray, we are not praying like this. When we pray and truly wish for God to work with us Unification family, then this is not the way we should pray. We pray by praising Almighty God first. Don't say: give me good marks, give me bread, give me… but we praise first. When you actualize this shift in your prayer life, your prayer life becomes stronger. You are not relying on your personal strength any more. You are no longer hyper focusing on your own desires and what you need for your own life. We will have a larger context in which God can use us and then God can move us into the right direction.

True Parents are of course in line with Jesus, they are the second coming of the Christ. They agree with Jesus. The first thing they do is to praise God and lift Him up. They pray for His kingdom to come first. Many Christians pray "They kingdom come" first. But we should go one more step beyond that. Inherit the heart of True Parents. Put the cosmos first, then the world, then the nations, then the entire families, and finally you might pray for your own concerns, your partner, your children and so on. When we pray like this, then our life, our prayer life, becomes very different because no longer are we only thinking of our individual situation. We are challenged to experience many different levels of reality. So True Parents bring us beyond our limitations. But the question is, are we also practicing this in our life? When we start practicing it, then the rock which is God and the power of God, the rock of salvation, becomes greater in our lives.

God is the rock of salvation

I remember, when I was a young boy, my father took us fishing. But many times, since we were very young, we didn't have to actually go fishing, but we would simply just go off to the beach. They would take us in the boats, but the boats couldn't go very close to the beach, so you had to jump and swim to the beach. We had to swim sometimes quite a distance. I didn't like swimming in such deep waters in the ocean, in case there is something. Everybody was jumping out and went swimming, while the water was still very deep -- maybe 30 feet to 50 feet -- very dark, black water. That made me very uncomfortable. And when we jumped into the water, I immediately began to think of "Jaws", the movie.

As soon as I jumped in, I remembered the big shark from the movie. I felt as if there was something moving behind me. I thought I had felt something at my feet. And then we swam like crazy to the beach. I remember my brothers loved to tease me and said: Shark is there! And guess what: I would be swimming like crazy. I remember one time, when I was in that kind of incredible situation, when you feel something nibbling at your toes, as soon as the foot touched the soft sand, not even the hard rock, you feel so much relief. It felt like "jaws" is not going to get you anymore. You are safe now. You feel so much comfort.

This is exactly what the rock of salvation is. When we are in our daily lives like swimming in the ocean, big waves are hitting us. Big challenges are coming up. Big winds are hitting us. If you have nothing to hold on to and you are all by yourself, you always suffer trying to grab the waves and the winds. But you can't grab the waves and the wind. Who made the wind and the waves? When we focus our prayers on God's kingdom first, then God becomes greater in our lives. It magnifies God's presence. Even though we are hit by winds and waves, we can hold on to something. We can find peace on the rock. And as we pray more, this rock becomes bigger, like a mountain. At some point, even waves can't hit you, even the wind can't hit you because the mountain is so big. People are apt to make a mistake. They may saw, look how great I am, I climbed this mountain. But it is God's mountain. So when we pray, we should always praise God first.

God is the master of the elements

I remember, when I was in a plane, and we hit this monsoon, we went right into that storm. We were very high, some 20.000 feet or so, and we were entering this huge black monsoon cloud with lightning inside. Everybody was thinking, oh my God. Inside the cloud the plane began to go up and down, like in a roller coaster -- it was terrible. I remember that my stomach went up into my throat because we were dropping so fast. In that situation I just looked around inside the plane. Everybody was tightening his belt and everybody started praying -- everybody became a monk. As the plane was shaking so hard, even the doors of the hand luggage departments above the heads fell open. When this was happening I found myself in my own mind praying: 'Oh God, please safe me, this is terrible, we are all going to die!'

Then I remembered, I gave a sermon last week on prayer and I am not supposed to pray like this -- and yet here I was doing it right now! So I changed my mind quickly. I remember when I was praying: 'Oh my God save me from dying, I'm going to Thailand for you, why are you killing me now?' Immediately, I was filled with so much fear, I was so scared. You are at the mercy of the storm. When the storm comes you say: 'God save me!' -- when it's gone: 'God, thank you.' When the plane falls down: 'God save me!' -- when it goes up again: 'Oh, thank you.'

You have no control in that situation. You have no authority in that situation. But I realized, when I change the prayer, change the mind, when I stop praying just for myself, and change it to 'God is great, God is the creator of everything in the universe. You created heaven and earth, the seas, the water and the wind, this little bit of rain is nothing for you, but you are incredible, you are almighty' and so on. When you change your prayers like this by focusing on praising God, 'God is great, He is the creator of the universe, creator of all the seas, mountains, the winds and everything', then immediately all the fear is gone. But as soon as I concentrate on myself the fear comes back. Next time you are on a plane and it is shaky, you train like this.

When we change our prayer life, then we are changing our relationship with any type of storm. We are changing our relationship with any type of difficulty. We are changing our relationship with any opponent or any enemy. It is not about me winning over the situation. It is about me trusting in God. Through that I can become victorious in any situation, yes? Gott ist groß. [God is great!] Let's give Him a big applause.

Overcoming secular Europe

We have to reflect on our relationship with God. Then I hope that this kind of meditation is helpful for you to analyze your prayer and start in a new way. Let's make a fresh start by setting up the right relationship. If you set up the relationship like this then you will see that God will bless you. He will bless you not because we you are better or you deserve it. But He will bless us and He will use us to do great things because we are coming to Him in the way that He expects us to come.

Here in Europe we have a large Muslim population and many leaders are concerned about their rapid growth and the weakening of Christianity. But we have to remember something: in the Principle perspective, when Christianity lost track of faith, God sent Islam. If you know anything about Islam, Islam is very clear about the presence of God. When I was in France they told me, you can't speak about God in public. In America you can, in Germany you can, yes? But in France you cannot!

When our leader there met one congressman, he mentioned the word inter-religious! But this was already too much for the congressman who told our leader to leave religion at home. If the nation becomes that secular then God will bless Islam, because God will use Islam to remind us to come back to Him. In Europe, we may see this as a problem. But remember, believers in Islam are very strong in their prayer life, very strong about God, and very clear about Jesus being the Messiah as a man but not God. Their view is very principled. And they are serious and will not let anybody step on their faith. If you insult their faith, they will tell you. They will not let anybody walk on them in terms of their faith. And they will not let anybody say, you cannot talk about God. They will talk about God. This is actually what the Unification Movement has to be doing. We are the ones that God should bless to change the secular culture of the nation.

I was talking to the national leader and he asked me what to do because there is a fight between Islam and other religions. In Europe this is quite a large issue. Even in America, Islam is the fastest growing religion. The national leader of France said, I can't talk about God and the Principle to the officials. I have been trying, but it is impossible. I told him that we have many friends among the Muslims. But they are also watching us. They want to see if they can respect us spiritually. You are a Unificationist, can I respect you? Are you as serious as me as a Muslim? I am praying five times a day, every day, centering myself on God. How serious is your faith? Then we made a special condition in France with the national leader there. We decided to pray even eight times a day. This is not some competition! But it is a way in which we express in our daily life reference for God. The only way to inspire somebody with tremendous faith is by having even greater faith. That's the only way they will come to respect you.

There are many people here in Europe who are not happy with the secular trends, many people who know that in the end all of this will pass because we will go to spirit world anyway, and we should better think about God. When we reflect on our life as Unificationists then the question is, how are we actualizing the Principle in our lives? We know the Principle, but the question is, how are we practicing it? Mind-body unity training, husband-wife unity training, uniting with our children. How are we actualizing this as Unificationists? People in this world do not only want to listen to what we have to say, but they always watch what we do. They watch how serious we are about realizing our spiritual teaching.

This doesn't mean we have to be perfect. None of us is perfect. And none of us can be perfect. I know that in Germany and also in Europe and America, there is confusion about the Divine Principle in this manner. In the Principle, we have formation stage, growth stage and perfection right? You remember that, yes? Formation, growth and perfection. This is a wrong translation. In Chinese characters and in Korean there are two words: there is won-seong and there is won-gyogWon-gyog means perfection, it means no stain, you are perfect like God. This is impossible. Even if we would exercise all day, every day, every second, there is no way we could be perfect as God the creator is perfect. So this translation of perfection is wrong. It is not won-gyog. In Korean its formation, growth and won-seong, which means maturity. It means completion and maturity. That makes a lot more sense. Adam and Eve had to reach maturity before being blessed, not be totally perfect before being blessed. Nobody is totally perfect. So it is important to do our practice and our training and have our prayer life. But also we have to remember, this is not the path of perfection in the way God is perfect. This is moving on the path of completion and spiritual maturity.

The core teaching of the Principle

As we come together and reflect, one of the important things I struggled with as a Unificationist concerns the question, what is so special about our core teaching? What is our core teaching? Do you know what our core teaching is? Can we learn the Divine Principle in one sentence? You can, for example, understand Islam, at least the basics, from one sentence: La Allah ill Allah, Muhammad Rasul Allah -- There is only one God and Mohamed is his Prophet. That is basically the message of Islam. Can you learn the Divine Principle in one sentence? Or do you have to go through the whole thing? Do you want to learn the Divine Principle in one sentence? Yes! The Divine Principle is very simple: "Inherit the true love of God!" Once more: "Inherit the love of God!" -- In the 'Purpose of Creation', what were Adam and Eve supposed to do? Inherit the true love of God. In the second chapter, what happened during the 'Fall of Man'? Satan said: "Don't inherit the true love of God." And in 'The Principles of Restoration' all the way to the end, mankind has been waiting for the one who can inherit the true love of God.

Did you ever know the Divine Principle is that simple? The question, of course, is: What are we talking about? What is inherit, what is true love, and what is God? When we inherit, we have to receive something, some tradition. And the question is, of course, what is true love? I had big problems with this question, what is true love? We say it is the essence of God's divinity. You know, I studied many other religions, like Christianity. In John 15.13, Jesus says: "Greater love has no one than him, who lays down his life for his friends." In Buddhism, there is the notion of compassion for others. One of them is ultimate compassion, great compassion. It's being so compassionate that one would not go into liberation and freedom from all suffering, choosing not to go into freedom in order to safe those people who are still suffering and safe them first, before going to heaven. To get everybody free first. This is in Buddhism. It is very powerful. And then let's look at Islam. There is complete surrender unto God, complete love of God, focusing one's attention completely on God.

Now the question is, when we talk about true love, isn't it basically this type of love we are talking about? Then what is true love? In our movement we say, it is living for the sake of others. What is true love? It is a love that can subjugate Satan. It is love that gives and gives and forgets. But there is nothing special with that. Jesus lived for the sake of others; he had love that subjugated Satan. Jesus had love that would give and give and then forget. So what makes our true love so special?

This was a big problem for me. At that point, I just graduated from Divinity School and started to go into ministry. I had to lecture about true love. But I did not know exactly what it was, and I did not feel the power of true love. How can it be more powerful than what Jesus said was the greatest love? If we are going to complete Christianity and complete all the other faith traditions, then the Messiah should bring the new truth according to the Principle. So what is so great about true love? Nobody could answer this question for me. Nobody had an adequate answer. I struggled very much with this.

One day, I fell asleep at night and then I had a dream. When I was young, I heard all the stories of how True Father was imprisoned and tortured and so on. We all know these stories. He was imprisoned in Japan, North and South Korea, even in the USA. In this dream, I saw Father being tortured. And then I saw his soul moving down into the realm of hell. There were many hell beings torturing the souls. True Father went down to this place and threw his soul into the arms of these torturers. And he said, "you can torture this spirit and you let my children go." This was a very powerful dream for me.

Looking with spiritual eyes

When I saw this dream, I remembered something that I know from Christianity. Something all Christians must believe in order to be Christians. It is known as the Apostles' Creed. It says that Jesus died for your sin, descended into hell, and on the third day was resurrected in the flesh and sits on the right side of the Father. I remembered this Creed and then I realized, no wonder we don't understand what true love is. Christians understand that you cannot just have a relationship with your physical senses. If you see Jesus only with your physical eyes, you see a Middle Eastern man who did three years of ministry.

Not even the 12 closest disciples could follow him. In the eyes of the state he was a criminal, deserving of capital punishment. All you see is a criminal, or at best a man who was failing his ministry. Not even the 12 disciples were devoted to him. But this is not the relationship that Christians have with Jesus. All Christians must open their spiritual eyes when they come in contact with Christ. They have to look at Jesus with their spiritual eyes and realize that this man died for my sins. He gives me forgiveness. He was sent as the sacrificial lamb to safe me. Then you have to give yourself to Christ and become a new person.

I realized that this is exactly the reason, why we as Unificationists do not understand true love. In the same way that Christians see Jesus with their spiritual eyes, we must also see the returning Christ with our spiritual eyes. If we look with our physical eyes only, we have to acknowledge that he is the most successful religious leader while still living on earth. He made an incredible worldwide foundation. But when we see with our spiritual eyes, we see somebody, who not only went the path of the cross, dying for the sake of the world, not just once.

When we look at his life, he went the path of torture and death over and over again. I am talking about the six imprisonments and the cosmic event of the helicopter incident. A miracle happened and all the passengers, including two of my own children, were saved and survived. When we see True Parents with our spiritual eyes, we realize that this is not only the sacrificial love that is willing to die for the sake of others. It is True Parents' love that is willing to die, and die, and die again and again. If you are a parent, you may get a sense of this feeling. If your children were kidnapped and tortured and you had the ability to change places with them, I think most parents would be ready to do that. The parental love is that great.

Then I realized that the true love that Father talks about is not just being kind to people or cleaning up after somebody, doing volunteer work. This is not what Father is talking about. He is talking about the parental love which will sacrifice the body, mind and soul to save the children. When I realized this, not just once, but over and over again, I understood: the true love that we are going to inherit from True Parents will shape history, just like Jesus' love shaped the history of the past 2000 years. If the Unification Church can inherit this love of True Parents, it will change history from now till eternity.

We must be clear about one point. We do not believe True Parents to be a living God. This is a wrong interpretation. The Messiah is not the living God. He is not the creator of the universe. This is different from Christianity. For Christians Jesus is God the creator of the universe. But we don't see the Messiah as God Himself. But we see the Messiah as the one who has inherited the true love of God, which is the essence of God. He has the value of God's true love. When we see True Parents in that light, we can understand their preciousness. Then we can understand the preciousness of true love that we are going to inherit from the True Parents.

Brothers and sisters, let's always remember our relationship with God starts from humbling ourselves in front of God in our prayer life. With this attitude we start every day, every moment, every step we are taking in our lives. Let's summarize,

first: praise God whenever you pray,

second: His kingdom first,

third: pray for the world, nation, society, family and then we can pray for ourselves.

Also we pray for forgiveness and learn to forgive. It is not the length of prayer that matters. I remember one minister who was very handsome and could pray in a very poetic way. He prayed from the Principle of Creation all the way to the end for three hours. But what happened to him? He broke his blessing, ran away from the church. Now he has cancer and is miserable. See, it is not the length of the prayer. You can pray very short. Let's all rise and finish with a final prayer. Put your hands up as if to touch the face of God, and let's pray:

Closing Prayer

Dearest most beloved Heavenly Father, we are so grateful to be in your presence. You are great. Father, we thank you for sending True Parents, because they have inherited your true love and fulfilled the purpose of creation, redeemed the fall of man and walked the path of restoration. God, you are magnificent and you are the creator of all things and in control of our lives. Father, we pray that you may always guide us into your kingdom. Lead our lives into your kingdom. Father, move the spirit world so that all beings can come into your kingdom. We also pray for the world that it may be united and return back into your bosom. We pray for all the nations of the world. The scripture says when Christ returns all the knees will bow and all the tongues will confess that Christ has returned. We pray that the nations will become awakened and receive the Messiah whom you have sent. We pray for all the societies and tribes, that they may be directed in goodness, and for all the people ,that they may not fall into moral relativism, but know that there is evil and there is good.

Father, we pray for all the families in this world. We pray that you use our spousal relationship to light this world. We pray that you can use our family and our individual life for the sake of your path of salvation for all humankind. Father let us participate in this incredible path. We give you all the glory today. We want to lift up your name. We want to give you praise and thanks from the bottom of our heart. And we want to lift up True Parents, who are the Messiah who has come. And let's be proud of who we are. Let us be proud of our faith and let us share our faith with others. We thank you so much and pray that all the brothers and sisters here may find a new relationship with you. We pray that we can receive forgiveness, for many times we are imperfect. And we promise that in our lives we will have the heart of forgiveness. We will train and practice that. We pray all these things in the names of our central blessed families, as we bow in front of you and True Parents, and in our own names -- Aju.

Hyung Jin Moon Visiting Historic Sites in Germany

August 29, 2010
UPF -- Germany

Frankfurt, Germany -- After arriving from Paris at Frankfurt airport in the afternoon of August 27, Hyung Jin Moon and his party went to Gruneburg Park to pray at the Holy Ground established on July 29, 1965 by UPF Founder, Rev. Sun Myung Moon, when he first visited Europe.

The next day we traveled east to visit religious and historic sites, starting with Wartburg in Thuringia for an exclusive tour through the castle, walking along the footsteps of Elisabeth of Thuringia. Elisabeth came to the Wartburg Castle from Hungary at the age of four as a future wife of the prince. She invested her life and wealth totally for the poor and the sick, even after her husband died on a Crusade in 1227. She died at the young age of 24, leaving behind three children, and was canonized by the Catholic Church shortly afterwards.

The other prominent religious figure in Wartburg's history was Martin Luther. After being outlawed by Emperor Charles V, Luther was abducted by his friend Count Friedrich and brought to the castle in 1521. There Luther translated the New Testament into German in only ten weeks.

Hyung Jin Moon observed that in this sense, Wartburg is an early place of ecumenism, since a Catholic saint as well as the founder of Protestantism were living under the same roof and are both remembered there.

After a quick lunch at the Kartoffelhaus in Eisenach, we went to the former Concentration Camp of Buchenwald near Weimar to see a darker side of Germany's history. During Hitler's Nazi regime, some 56,000 inmates died there of overwork and malnutrition. We forming a semicircle and prayed earnestly for the many people who suffered at the hands of the SS and died.

"How is such deplorable human behavior possible?" Hyung Jin Moon reflected. "I believe it starts with a morality based on atheism." Indeed young SS recruits did not to belong to any church. Yet despite such evidence of the vileness and corruption of humankind, God's providence continues.

The main public event was held in the Limburg City hall of Limburg, in the state of Hesse. The seating was originally planned for 900 people, but more than 1200 people showed up including 450 from neighboring countries. After being introduced by the UPF-Europe regional chair, Dr. Yong Cheol Song, Hyung Jin Moon spoke on the power of prayer and the spirituality of the world's religions, which all seek to reconnect people with God. The following day, the international guests left for London.
