Welcoming Remarks
Yeon Ah Nim:

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters! It is great to see you all. Welcome to the Headquarters of the Unification Church. As many of you know, there are 524 volumes of True Father’s teaching. Recently I heard that True Father started to read them through from Volume One during Hoon Dok Hae, so we are sending great applause for our True Father’s unending love for God. I really hope that you have a blessed week with Heavenly Father’s love and True Father’s true teaching. Aju!

Hyung Jin Nim:

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters! You know Christmas is coming very soon, so today it is all about Jesus. Today I am going to talk a lot about Jesus. Even for me as a second generation, while growing up I didn’t really understand Jesus well. Actually, we didn’t learn Christian theology in the church; we only heard Divine Principle. It was not until I studied Christian theology in the school of theology at Harvard that I truly came to realize the value of the Divine Principle -- how powerful it is for someone who comes from the Christian tradition, who already has that knowledge of Christian theology. How powerful it is, how it answers fundamental questions that have wrecked the minds of many theologians and Christian elect for two thousand years! We will get to that a little later today.

Let us now manifest the Principle: Give and Receive Action, Four Position Foundation. May I inherit the True Love of God! Aju!

Today our reading is from Cheon Seong Gyeong, page 196. This is about the Messiah:

The Messiah is the embodiment of the purpose of faith and the embodiment of the purpose of hope. He is the embodiment in whom the purpose of faith and hope are realized. When this purpose is realized through the Messiah, what is the only thing that will remain? Nothing will remain but love when this purpose is realized. This is why it is said that what remains in the end is love. This love comes through the perfect incarnation of faith and hope. The representative of this one love is the Messiah.

Today, as we approach Christmas, let’s give it up for Jesus and let’s give it up for our True Parents!

Brothers and sisters, through our service, I hope that we can all come to a new appreciation of what we have as Unification Church, the incredible teaching and power that we have. I hope that through this recognition we can really glorify True Parents and testify on their behalf. Let us all rise up and offer our family pledge!

Brothers and sisters, we are truly an incredible community from all around the world, especially our international community here. I see those beautiful yellow jackets of hope here in Seoul. We were passing by Seoul Station the other day and saw brothers and sisters proudly wearing the Unification Church yellow vest, with the big symbol on it, walking around and talking about True Parents. We saw, even today, brothers and sisters who were out on the streets. We were so happy! Let’s give our proud Unificationists a big round of applause, let’s give them some encouragement!

Interesting Story

There has been an overwhelming demand for interesting comments, so here is a very interesting story that I heard:

A long time ago, in the 18th century, a pastor was riding furiously on his horse on his way to church; he was late. Suddenly the horse hit the stump of a tree and this flung him to the ground. He was injured, lying in the dirt, his body was in pain. The pastor called out because he could not do it on his own strength. He said, “All the angels in Heaven, please help me to get back up onto my horse!” At that, the pastor was able to supernaturally leap up into the air, but he leapt a bit too high, over the horse, and landed on the other side. Then from that side on the ground he said, “OK, angels, just half of you help me this time!”

Main Sermon

Today, I want to talk to you about the Purpose of the Lord. As we approach Christmas, as the whole world celebrates the birth of Jesus, then for us as Unification Church, for us who do believe in Jesus as the messiah, for us I think it’s important and relevant to spend a little time on the purpose of Christ. Let’s look at some of the World Scriptures today. This is from Christianity. Let’s read this together from 1 Corinthians 15:45:

“The first man, Adam, became a living being; the last Adam [Jesus] became a life-giving spirit.”

Next is from Islam. Many people don’t know that within Islam, Jesus is a prophet. He’s called Isaa in the Qur’an, and also he’s seen as the Imam to return. So let’s take a look at this verse:

“The likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam.”
Qur’an 3:59

And let’s look at True Parent’s words:

“Jesus came as the incarnation of the Word. Jesus was the man whom God had been hoping to see over the long course of restoration history, the desire of God from the time of creation.”
3:318

And let’s move to our Core Scriptures today. The first one comes from Matthew 26: 36-39. Let’s read this together:

“Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’ He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.” He began to be sorrowful and troubled. “Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.’ ”

As you know, in the story in Matthew 26, Jesus repeats this process three times. He comes back, sees them sleeping, goes back, prays at Gethsemane, comes back, goes back -- three times he asks God, “Let this cup pass from me.”

I was talking to one of our ministers here at Headquarters Church this past week, and he said that he was asked a question by a non-Unificationist: “Hey, do you guys actually believe in Jesus as the Messiah? I heard that you guys denied Jesus.” This was the question. It’s very clear for us. Of course we believe in Jesus as Messiah -- it’s not only central to our theology, it’s central to the mission of True Parents to complete and fulfill the mission of Jesus.

I realized that there is still so much misinformation out there, so much ignorance, still, pertaining to our theology. Of course, in the past thirty years, we have not been really declaring our beliefs and witnessing in a major way. So this is somewhat understandable, but now as we come more into the public and as the media wants to hear what we believe, and as these human rights issues come up in Japan, this huge violation, then people want to know what we believe. Why is our faith so powerful that people will change their life to the point where they are so imbued by the Holy Spirit, that they’ll be persecuted and even attacked by other Christian ministers. Why do they do this? What does the Unification Church believe in? This is a major question.

When I was talking to Kook Jin hyung this past week, he was saying that really he never understood the value of the Divine Principle until he actually studied Christian theology. When he started to study Christian theology, he realized, My God! Christian theology is so inadequate in answering most of the fundamental questions that we take for granted within the Principle, questions like: What is the purpose of creating the whole universe? What is the purpose of man? What is the purpose of Christ? How will the Kingdom actually be accomplished? How are these things connected?

Christian theology cannot explain how these are connected, theologically. You see, in Christian theology, Jesus came with the purpose to die. He came to die, so the crucifixion was God’s will. It was the predestined Will of God. In this type of theology, the crucifixion is the glory of Christ, because on that cross, he offers his body as the sacrifice for the sake of the world’s sin. So in the end, as Christians believe, and in the Christian theology, the ultimate purpose of Christ was for him, the sacrificial offering, to die for us.

But when we actually look at the Biblical scripture, we can see the exact opposite. As we just read together in Matthew 26, we can see Christ totally disappointed; we can see him in sorrow that he’s been rejected. We can see that his disciples are betraying him, like Judas, and sending in officials to get him, to crucify him. We can see that he is in so much pain. He’s begging God, “Please take this cup from me. Don’t let me go on the cross. Please, Father, let this pass.” In Matthew 26 we can clearly see his heart, that Christ did not come to die. If the Lord’s purpose was to die, then why is he “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death”? Why is he falling to the ground with his face down on the ground, and begging God, “Let this cup be taken from me”? Not once, twice, but three times, asking over and over? Why is he doing such a thing if his purpose was to die, if that was his predestined will?

In John 8:37, we see that Jesus is frustrated. He’s talking to the Jews, the Pharisees, the Sadducees saying, “I know you are Abraham’s descendants, yet you are ready to kill me because you have no room for my word”, meaning: If you had room for my word, if you had accepted me, you would not be wanting to kill me. - You see, only the Divine Principle, only the Unification Church, is able to explain the truth that God did not send Christ to die -- did not! -- That that was not the purpose of Christ.

When we look at the Bible, at the disciples of Jesus, we see them lamenting the death and murder of Christ. In the Acts of the Apostles 7:51-52, we see Stephen. He is lamenting the fact that Jesus was killed. He is chastising the Jews, saying, “You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him.” Stephen is saddened, grief-stricken that Jesus was killed, pointing to the fact that it was human error, not the predestined will of God to kill Jesus.

In 1 Corinthians 2:8, we see the great Saint Paul also lamenting the death of Christ. He says that “None of the rulers of this age understood [the wisdom of the Spirit], for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” This again points to the fact, that human error was involved; that Jesus wasn’t supposed to be crucified. And this is only explained clearly and theologically within the Divine Principle. Only the Unification Church explains this from a powerful theological position. Christian theology does not explain this. Only the Principle elucidates this fact and reveals the suffering heart of Christ, the pain, what we call “Han.” It’s difficult to put a finger on what exactly Han means in translation, but Han is kind of like a pain, a feeling of frustration, a feeling of a mission unfulfilled. It’s like a feeling of not being truly understood, a heart-wrenching historical longing to see an original purpose fulfilled. It is like an incredible, intense longing and pain. This is what we elucidate in the Principle.

When you actually study Christian theology, you realize that Christian theology cannot explain the purpose of Christ other than he was to die, other than it was predestined by God for Jesus to die, even though the scripture shows the opposite. Of course there are Scriptural passages in the Bible where Jesus does say he will have to go on this path. When Peter asks him, “Jesus, do you have to go on this path?” he says, “Get back, Satan! I must go on this path.” We see these scriptural passages in the Bible. But again, we understand from the principled perspective that only the Unification Church explains clearly that it was not the primary goal of God to send Jesus on the cross; but it became a secondary option so that Jesus could attain at least spiritual salvation for humankind.

You see, fundamentally, when we look at Christian theology in its essence, when we look at its notion of God, its notion of Jesus, in Christian theology Jesus is Almighty God, not just a man. He is the creator of the universe, the oceans, the fish, the sea, the stars, everything. That is Jesus -- Jesus is God. When we look at Christian theology and push it to its end, it declares that in the end, God is unknowable and that He is a “mystery.” These are known as the “mysteries of Christ” in the Catholic tradition. So in the end, Christian theology cannot explain the divinity and essence of God; it declares that in the end, God is just “mysterious.” That is why it simply says, that you have to “just believe.” Believe, and when the Lord comes, he will answer your questions, because God is unknowable.

This essentially segregates man from God, leaving God lonely. When you look at Christian theology deeply, you notice that Christian theology also doesn’t really explain what the kingdom is and how it will be accomplished. It’s a very mysterious thing in Christian theology. The best answer is that the Lord will return one day, and that he will take us up in a divine rapture, that he will take us to Heaven, especially the ones who believe.

So in the end, Christian theology does not answer the Purpose of Creation. It cannot explain the divinity of God, and it cannot explain what the kingdom of God is, how it will be accomplished and how all these things are connected to the mission of Jesus. This is, again, why the Principle is so powerful.

You see, only the Unification Church, with the power of the Divine Principle, can reveal the answers to these questions, because the True Parents come to fulfill the mission of Christ, because they come to share that message that the returning Lord will share. Only the Principle shows how the Purpose of Creation is connected to the divinity of God, how that is connected to the Kingdom of Heaven, how the Kingdom of Heaven will be accomplished, and how that is connected to Jesus. Only the Principle shows that there is a process here. You see, True Father explains very clearly that God’s divinity is not unknowable, but it can be explained. God’s divinity can be known. It is only when we do understand, and we do penetrate into God’s divinity, that we can be one with Him.

Father defines what God’s essence is. He defines God’s divinity. He defines it as True Love -- very simple. But he also defines what True Love is: it’s a love that is so pure and powerful, filled with so much loving compassion that it will die and die and die again for the sake of its children, even for the sake of its enemies; and through that process, it will bring its enemies to natural surrender. Father says that True Love brings even Satan to natural surrender.

The Unification Church explains what the divinity of God is. It doesn’t say that it’s just a mystery, unknowable, but that we can understand it, that we can define it, and we can try to inherit it. We can then try to understand what the Unification Movement talks about when we talk about the Purpose of Creation. Christian theology does not give an explanation of why creation was created, what is mankind’s role in this process in Genesis. All the way to the end of Revelation the Unification Principle explains things very clearly. The purpose of creation is very simple. The purpose of creation, of mankind, is to inherit the divinity of God. It is to inherit true love.

But in the process of the Fall, we see that mankind inherited false love, not pure love. If Adam and Eve inherited true love, the essence of God, they would become True Parents. Very simple. If they were able to teach that heart to their children, and the children to the tribes and the nation, and if those individuals were able to inherit that true love, that would be the kingdom. So there is a process through which we can explain the connection between God’s divinity, the purpose of creation, the purpose of the original ancestor, and the creation of the kingdom, which Christian theology cannot do. Only the Divine Principle shows this powerful connection between all these facets, and why those are so essential to the mission of Jesus Christ, why they are all actually connected to Jesus.

Christ’s mission was not to die. It was to succeed, it was to be glorious. It was to fulfill the promise that God gave to mankind at the beginning, to inherit His true love, and to create the kingdom. So we see Jesus pray about this, in the prayer in Matthew 6: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done…” He is praying, let us have your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, because that was his mission. His mission was to establish the kingdom, where the inheritors of the essence of God’s true love live. Let’s take a look at Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

The Unification Church loves Him, and we have been called to His purpose. That is why, simply and objectively speaking, we are the fastest-growing religion in the time of the founder compared to any other religion in history. Compare it to any ancient or even new religions, the Bahai tradition, the Mormon tradition, the Hari Krishna, Soka Gakkai, etc. When you actually study religion and study theology, you realize that objectively speaking, the Unification Church is the most successful religion during the time of its founder. And we will continue to succeed, and continue to return glory to God. Let’s give it up for the Unification Church! That’s why it’s important to study theology and learn religion, to understand the value of what True Parents have accomplished.

This is why the returning Christ has to come back. He’s coming back to create the Unification Movement, because True Parents are the champions of loving Jesus. If we really read True Parent’s early speeches and volumes and prayers, there is so much love for Jesus. It’s unbelievable! I think a lot of us growing up in the younger generation don’t understand this. There is so much profound love for Jesus. True Parents, because of their love, seek to give their life to liberate Christ, to make us more than conquerors, and to help us, so that we love Jesus as well, so that we are called to this purpose.

For two thousand years of Christian history, Christian theology fundamentally could not explain fundamental questions -- man’s existence, why we’re here in the first place, what we’re supposed to do, what God is, and how the kingdom will be created. True Father has penetrated and fulfilled the mission of Jesus, he has revealed these critical connections. In this process, he has worked toward liberating Jesus. I’ll tell you why the Christian theology is an incomplete theology: because even within its theology, it says it must wait for the Lord to return to complete its theology. Within itself, it requires the Lord to come back in order to complete the theology. Without even knowing it, many Christians do not understand this aspect of Christian theology. That’s why when they meet the Principle, they are so moved and transformed.

When I was studying at Harvard, we used the critical historical method to go into the biblical text. If the Bible is the literal word of God and it is not tainted by human hands, not tainted by interpretations of individuals, as the Christians believe that the Bible IS the literal word of God, then how do we explain the five or six different versions of the Bible -- the NKJ version, NIV version, the Catholic version? Some of these conflict with each other. Some of these versions actually say that another version is wrong. How do you explain the biblical texts? When we look with the historical critical method, we understand that there are many texts that are not including in the Bible. We see what are known as the extracanonical texts, the gospel of Thomas, the gospel of Mary, of Peter, etc., so many extracanonical texts that were not added to the Biblical scripture.

In fact when I was at the school of theology, I was studying alongside evangelical Christians. Some of them were Koreans. Some of my friends were evangelical Christians. They were all fired up about going to Harvard and said, “I’m going to be an awesome pastor.” Then they come and actually study theology and religion, the historical critical method, study whether or not the biblical text IS foolproof, IS the literal word of God. And then we go through the evidence that scholars and archaeologists have been able to uncover, and we look at what we can actually prove about Jesus. And fundamentally, scholars can actually prove only about two things: the fact that maybe he was a Jew, and the fact that he died on the cross. We know this because there are historical texts at the time around Jesus that mention that there was a figure, that he was the Messiah and was crucified, but there were also hundreds of people who were crucified at the same time as him. There is also text that shows that things are totally off from what we usually see in the passion narratives, in the Christian Bible.

When my friends, the evangelical Christians, encountered these things, their faith was shattered. But as a Unificationist, because we have an interpretation from the Divine Principle, and because from a principled perspective we see the Bible as being inspired by God but also having symbolic and metaphorical usage, then for me, it was much more comfortable to listen and analyze the Bible and look at the life of Jesus with the critical historical lens, than it was for my friends who were from the Christian evangelical traditions. What was the result of that? Most of my friends, who went in saying, “I’m going to be an awesome Harvard-trained pastor!”, when they came out, said “I’m not going to be a pastor.” The fundamental notions of Christian theology fundamentally break down, when you look at it through the historical text and the historical critical method. When you look at the enlightenment that True Parents brought to the notion of Jesus, that he was not to die, that that wasn’t the will of God, and when you look at even the extracanonical and many other texts, they support the fact that Jesus was not to die. Some of the texts say that he didn’t even die.

But we see that True Parents lived their lives to fulfill his purpose and to alleviate the pain of Christ. True Father is the only one that I know of who physically brought Jews, Muslim and Christian leaders to come together in the Holy Land. Among the religious leaders that I know, True Father is the only one that brought those leaders to actually take down the cross of Jesus. In Christian theology, the cross is the glory of Christ, but if you look at the reality of Christ’s situation, what we see is that the cross is the failure of humankind to accept Jesus. It represents not the victory, but the failure of humanity to recognize the preciousness of Jesus. So when Father went there with the Jews and Christian leaders who understood this and were awakened to this, they said “Yes, we have to liberate Jesus’ heart!”

We know the fact that a lot of our Christian pastor friends came with us to bury the cross. They took down the crosses from their churches, and instead put up the crown, because that was what Jesus was supposed to do. We have pictures of the delegations of the Muslim community, the Druze community, the Jewish community and the Christian community coming together before the throne of Christ, to give and offer a crown to Christ -- not a cross, but a crown, to say to Jesus, “You were here to become the king of kings.” This is incredible! Let’s give it up for True Parents! They want to liberate Jesus.

This is very phenomenal, actually. When we study religion and compare True Father’s actions and what he has done compared with other religious leaders, even new religious traditions (Bahá'u'lláh and Joseph Smith, for example), you’ll see there is a phenomenal difference. So when we see that True Parents have come to really fulfill the mission of Christ, to liberate his heart, this is such an incredible thing that True Parents are doing. Through the liberation of Christ, they are once again connecting those things that were shattered, the purpose of creation, the divinity of God, the Kingdom of Heaven, the process of how that’s going to begin, they’re connecting those things once again. That is what’s so powerful about the Unification theology. We can actually explain how we will create the kingdom.

As we begin our faith life again as Unificationists, as we rediscover our faith, we will say, “My God! What we have is so valuable!” I never really understood the value of what we have until I went out there, lived with those communities and listened to their theology, and then was able to compare that to our theology. I never understood how powerful our theology was. As we begin our faith life again, as we go out and witness, as we go out and declare that True Parents are the Lord, that they are the people who liberate Jesus, that they fulfill his mission, that they bring a higher truth that will elevate the religions to a higher level, then we will also receive questions: "Do you believe in Jesus? Well, I thought Jesus was supposed to die", such questions. We have to remember that it is people who truly love Jesus who will be the most resistant to any other interpretation of Jesus. But if they actually open their heart, and if we continue to love them, and explain to them and ask them to not only make an emotional decision based on what they have heard from the beginning to this point in their life, but to actually think about what the mission of Jesus was, then many people can come to understand that Christ’s real mission was to be victorious.

I was talking to a brother and sister this week, a wonderful family. The gentleman is in a construction company, he is in his 50s, and he’s a new member who has been in the church just a couple of years. He was an evangelical Christian since he was five years old, a Korean evangelical Christian. From five years old, he found Jesus and lived his life for Jesus. He had a hard life when he was young. He lost his father at an early age, and his mother remarried. He was twelve years old when he got a new dad. It was very difficult and he was very lonely. So, he said that when he discovered Christ at an early age, he was so fulfilled. He went to church whenever he needed a safe haven, to get away from home; he would go and pray. For forty years, he lived as a devout Christian. He moved from Pusan all the way up to Seoul, and he was attending the big mega-churches here. He was actually an elder in one of the communities, a very established Christian.

Then, because his last name is Moon, he got connected to the Moon tribe group, and somehow heard the Principle. He attended a 2-day lecture, and he said it shattered his mind. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. It was amazing! “I love Jesus so much, and these questions have been haunting me: Why was Jesus to die? Am I just supposed to die? Wasn’t Jesus here to be victorious? Aren’t we here to be in the likeness of Christ?” He had all these fundamental questions: "How can God be so mysterious? How can we ever love Him and feel His love and be transformed?" When he heard the Principle, those things were one by one shattered. He said to me, “Use the Principle. When I talk about the Principle, I tell my friends that Jesus came to live, to be glorious, to fulfill the prophecies and he was supposed to unite the world, create the kingdom.” He was so moved when sharing this message. This brother told us, “Be confident because we have the Principle.” He said, “For the first time in my life, I’m going around saying, ‘I’m a Unificationist. I’m not just hanging out with Unificationists, I AM a Unificationist!’ ” Let’s give it up for Unificationists!

So he said that, of course, those who truly love Jesus, will be resistant at first, but in the end, they will be moved by the heart of our brothers and sisters, by the heart of us as Unificationists, who truly love Jesus and want to liberate his heart, by True Father, who has lived his life, risked his life, given his life, so that Jesus could be at peace.

When they actually understand that no other religious figure has done what True Father has done for Jesus, that is when the transformation comes. When they open their heart emotionally that way, then the Principle, the power of its rational explanation and systematic theology, can come into their heart. That’s why in this age, it’s so important to realize that, as we now approach Christmas, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, that we as Unificationists are also called to love Jesus; that loving Jesus, and knowing about Jesus is actually very important in understanding the messianic role of True Parents. I never really understood True Parents until I started studying about Jesus. Even the way Jesus acted, I realized, "My God! True Father acts just like Jesus!" Jesus was not the nicest man on earth -- he was very radical in what he said, very strong. If you read the Bible, you can see how strongly he speaks, how he challenges the world.

As we approach this season, towards the New Year, the celebration of Christmas and God’s Day, etc., I really pray that the Unificationist brothers and sisters around the world can remember and understand the heart of Jesus, and have confidence. The explanations that we can give to Christians can not only open their minds, but when we make them understand Jesus in a new way, can completely transform their lives. Come on, brothers and sisters, that’s our scripture -- powerful! Let’s give it up once more for the Divine Principle! Powerful!

I want to finish with a reading from True Parent’s words, the first volume, page 74:

“Please allow us in this hour to clearly understand that it is our responsibility to bear the burden of the course Jesus walked and of the words of the gospel that Jesus left behind. It is also our responsibility to fight with millions of satans and to return the glory of victory to the Father. Just as Jesus had a desperate and earnest heart toward Heaven, allow us also to have the same heart toward Heaven.”

Let us all bow our heads, and turn to our final meditation practice.

Altar Call

Let’s hold each other’s hands in brotherhood and sisterhood. I want you to lift up your hands to Heaven. Let us pray!

Heavenly Parent and our most beloved True Parents, we thank you so much that we can be alive at this time, that we can come to understand the truth that Jesus was not here to die, that the purpose of Jesus’ coming was to be victorious and start a new history, a new era when the kingdom could flourish, that there would be peace and that there would be love between brothers and sisters.

As brothers and sisters, we know that in the process that True Parents have elucidated, we can find our true value, we can understand our purpose to truly be able to inherit Your divinity, Your essence, Your true love, Father, a love that is a parental heart, a love that will sacrifice itself for the sake of its children, that will lay down its life for the sake of the world, that will lay down its life over and over, even descending into the hells so that the children may be free. Father, it is that kind of heroic heart that is the True Parents’ heart. Father, let us not inherit a lesser form of love, a weaker, self-centered kind of love.

Father, let us inherit Your divine nature, Your parental heart. Heavenly Father, we pray that, as we do that, we will become manifestations of Your kingdom, that our families and tribes will become the kingdom that is growing, the kingdom that is to come. Father, we pray that You may awaken us this time, that we, as Unificationists, can pray about Jesus and love Jesus, that we may understand that it is Jesus’ mission that True Father has come to fulfill and it is that mission through which True Parents have liberated the heart of the Messiah. Father, we are so grateful because only the returning Lord would do such a thing, to sacrifice himself for his predecessor, to sacrifice his life so that the predecessor may be at peace and find joy. Father, thank You so much because True Parents have shown us what the true parental heart is through the seven deaths and resurrections. Father, let us come to imbibe and to inherit that type of phenomenal, cosmic love.

Father, we brothers and sisters are now reclaiming our faith. We are not just keeping it to ourselves and being embarrassed about who we are, but now we are once again declaring to the world that we have a right to believe, that nobody can take away our religion from us, and that we are proud of what we believe -- not because we are uneducated, not because we are ignorant, but because we have studied theology deeply, because we are truly knowledgeable about the heart of Christ. Father, let us move past any of the offenses, the attacks that will come against us, any of the attempts to try to squash our faith, to squash our pride and our confidence. Let us be greater than that force. Father, let us know that You are with us, that Jesus also is with us, that True Parents’ mission is victorious, that we are now moving in the spirit of that resurrection power. Father, let us change people’s lives, let us teach Principle once again, and let people be transformed and be born anew.

We thank You so much. Father, we want to pray and give thanks at the end of this year as it comes to Christmas and the New Year. We want to celebrate You and give thanks. We pray all these things as brothers and sisters in faith and love and in lineage. We pray as Blessed Central Families and in the Name of our True Parents, Aju!

Notes:

Matthew, chapter 26

1: When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,

2: "You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of man will be delivered up to be crucified."

3: Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Ca'iaphas,

4: and took counsel together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

5: But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be a tumult among the people."

6: Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,

7: a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head, as he sat at table.

8: But when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste?

9: For this ointment might have been sold for a large sum, and given to the poor."

10: But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.

11: For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.

12: In pouring this ointment on my body she has done it to prepare me for burial.

13: Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her."

14: Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

15: and said, "What will you give me if I deliver him to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.

16: And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

17: Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the passover?"

18: He said, "Go into the city to a certain one, and say to him, `The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at your house with my disciples.'"

19: And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover.

20: When it was evening, he sat at table with the twelve disciples;

21: and as they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me."

22: And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?"

23: He answered, "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me.

24: The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born."

25: Judas, who betrayed him, said, "Is it I, Master?" He said to him, "You have said so."

26: Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."

27: And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you;

28: for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

29: I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."

30: And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31: Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of me this night; for it is written, `I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'

32: But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."

33: Peter declared to him, "Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away."

34: Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."

35: Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you." And so said all the disciples.

36: Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsem'ane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go yonder and pray."

37: And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zeb'edee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.

38: Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me."

39: And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt."

40: And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour?

41: Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

42: Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done."

43: And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44: So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.

45: Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46: Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."

47: While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

48: Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him."

49: And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Hail, Master!" And he kissed him.

50: Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.

51: And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

52: Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.

53: Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?

54: But how then should the scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?"

55: At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me.

56: But all this has taken place, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.

57: Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Ca'iaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.

58: But Peter followed him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end.

59: Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death,

60: but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward

61: and said, "This fellow said, `I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.'"

62: And the high priest stood up and said, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?"

63: But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."

64: Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."

65: Then the high priest tore his robes, and said, "He has uttered blasphemy. Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy.

66: What is your judgment?" They answered, "He deserves death."

67: Then they spat in his face, and struck him; and some slapped him,

68: saying, "Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?"

69: Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a maid came up to him, and said, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean."

70: But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean."

71: And when he went out to the porch, another maid saw him, and she said to the bystanders, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."

72: And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."

73: After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you."

74: Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know the man." And immediately the cock crowed.

75: And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

John, chapter 8

1: but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2: Early in the morning he came again to the temple; all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.

3: The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst

4: they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.

5: Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say about her?"

6: This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

7: And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her."

8: And once more he bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

9: But when they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

10: Jesus looked up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

11: She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again."

12: Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

13: The Pharisees then said to him, "You are bearing witness to yourself; your testimony is not true."

14: Jesus answered, "Even if I do bear witness to myself, my testimony is true, for I know whence I have come and whither I am going, but you do not know whence I come or whither I am going.

15: You judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.

16: Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone that judge, but I and he who sent me.

17: In your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true;

18: I bear witness to myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness to me."

19: They said to him therefore, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also."

20: These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

21: Again he said to them, "I go away, and you will seek me and die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come."

22: Then said the Jews, "Will he kill himself, since he says, `Where I am going, you cannot come'?"

23: He said to them, "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.

24: I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he."

25: They said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Even what I have told you from the beginning.

26: I have much to say about you and much to judge; but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him."

27: They did not understand that he spoke to them of the Father.

28: So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority but speak thus as the Father taught me.

29: And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him."

30: As he spoke thus, many believed in him.

31: Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples,

32: and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

33: They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?"

34: Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin.

35: The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever.

36: So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

37: I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.

38: I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father."

39: They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did,

40: but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did.

41: You do what your father did." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God."

42: Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth from God; I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.

43: Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.

44: You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

45: But, because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

46: Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

47: He who is of God hears the words of God; the reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God."

48: The Jews answered him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?"

49: Jesus answered, "I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

50: Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it and he will be the judge.

51: Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death."

52: The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, `If any one keeps my word, he will never taste death.'

53: Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you claim to be?"

54: Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God.

55: But you have not known him; I know him. If I said, I do not know him, I should be a liar like you; but I do know him and I keep his word.

56: Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see my day; he saw it and was glad."

57: The Jews then said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"

58: Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am."

59: So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

Acts, chapter 7

1: And the high priest said, "Is this so?"

2: And Stephen said: "Brethren and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopota'mia, before he lived in Haran,

3: and said to him, `Depart from your land and from your kindred and go into the land which I will show you.'

4: Then he departed from the land of the Chalde'ans, and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living;

5: yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him in possession and to his posterity after him, though he had no child.

6: And God spoke to this effect, that his posterity would be aliens in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and ill-treat them four hundred years.

7: `But I will judge the nation which they serve,' said God, `and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.'

8: And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

9: "And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him,

10: and rescued him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and over all his household.

11: Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.

12: But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time.

13: And at the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.

14: And Joseph sent and called to him Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five souls;

15: and Jacob went down into Egypt. And he died, himself and our fathers,

16: and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

17: "But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt

18: till there arose over Egypt another king who had not known Joseph.

19: He dealt craftily with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, that they might not be kept alive.

20: At this time Moses was born, and was beautiful before God. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house;

21: and when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.

22: And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

23: "When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.

24: And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking the Egyptian.

25: He supposed that his brethren understood that God was giving them deliverance by his hand, but they did not understand.

26: And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and would have reconciled them, saying, `Men, you are brethren, why do you wrong each other?'

27: But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, `Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

28: Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'

29: At this retort Moses fled, and became an exile in the land of Mid'ian, where he became the father of two sons.

30: "Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

31: When Moses saw it he wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to look, the voice of the Lord came,

32: `I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.

33: And the Lord said to him, `Take off the shoes from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

34: I have surely seen the ill-treatment of my people that are in Egypt and heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.'

35: "This Moses whom they refused, saying, `Who made you a ruler and a judge?' God sent as both ruler and deliverer by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.

36: He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.

37: This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, `God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up.'

38: This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living oracles to give to us.

39: Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,

40: saying to Aaron, `Make for us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'

41: And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and rejoiced in the works of their hands.

42: But God turned and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: `Did you offer to me slain beasts and sacrifices, forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43: And you took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of the god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship; and I will remove you beyond Babylon.'

44: "Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.

45: Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations which God thrust out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,

46: who found favor in the sight of God and asked leave to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.

47: But it was Solomon who built a house for him.

48: Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with hands; as the prophet says,

49: `Heaven is my throne, and earth my footstool. What house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?

50: Did not my hand make all these things?'

51: "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.

52: Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,

53: you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it."

54: Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth against him.

55: But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;

56: and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God."

57: But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him.

58: Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59: And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

60: And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

1 Corinthians, chapter 2

1: When I came to you, brethren, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words or wisdom.

2: For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

3: And I was with you in weakness and in much fear and trembling;

4: and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

5: that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.

7: But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification.

8: None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

9: But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him,"

10: God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

11: For what person knows a man's thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

12: Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.

13: And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit.

14: The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

15: The spiritual man judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.

16: "For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.

Matthew, chapter 6

1: "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

2: "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

3: But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

4: so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

5: "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

6: But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

7: "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8: Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9: Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10: Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

11: Give us this day our daily bread;

12: And forgive us our debts,

As we also have forgiven our debtors;

13: And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

14: For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you;

15: but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16: "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

17: But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,

18: that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

19: "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal,

20: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.

21: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22: "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light;

23: but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24: "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

25: "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

26: Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

27: And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?

28: And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin;

29: yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30: But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith?

31: Therefore do not be anxious, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?'

32: For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

33: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.

34: "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day.

Romans, chapter 8

1: There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

2: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.

3: For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

4: in order that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5: For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

6: To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

7: For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, indeed it cannot;

8: and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9: But you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Any one who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

10: But if Christ is in you, although your bodies are dead because of sin, your spirits are alive because of righteousness.

11: If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you.

12: So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh --

13: for if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live.

14: For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

15: For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, "Abba! Father!"

16: it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

17: and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

18: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

19: For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God;

20: for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of him who subjected it in hope;

21: because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God.

22: We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now;

23: and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

24: For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?

25: But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

26: Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words.

27: And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

28: We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

29: For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren.

30: And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

31: What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us?

32: He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him?

33: Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies;

34: who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us?

35: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36: As it is written, "For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered."

37: No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

38: For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,

39: nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Re.: Announcement of Blessing in February 2010

May God and True Parents’ blessings and love be with brothers and sisters in all regions, mission nations and providential organizations.

The recent 11.16 Second Generation Blessing Ceremony by True Parents was a historic ceremony that realized God’s wish, His ideal at the time of Creation, of blessing Adam and Eve in the original Garden of Eden. We offer gratitude to True Parents and also to the leaders and members for the devotion and hard work they offered for this Blessing Ceremony. I would like to ask for your attention and support for second generation blessed couples who have the responsibility to carry out the important mission of now establishing a new blessing tradition for second generation members.

On December 7, before leaving for America, True Parents gave instructions to prepare for a Blessing Ceremony for 14,300 couples to be held in February 2010 in commemoration of True Parents’ birthday. True Parents are re-creating us into citizens of Cheon Il Guk through the blessing; let us invest ourselves completely so that we can offer the fruits of victory to heaven. In this light, regional presidents and national leaders should follow the guidelines below and do their best in preparing for the upcoming Blessing Ceremony.

Moving With The Holy Spirit

Hyung Jin Moon
December 5, 2009
Headquarters Church, Seoul Korea

Welcoming Remarks:
Yeon Ah Nim

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters! [Good afternoon]. It is great to see you all. Welcome to the Headquarters of the Unification Church. This morning before service, we went to the church offering ceremony at Gangnam, and we are very happy and proud that the Korean church is facing, once again, the society for Heavenly Father and True Parents with confidence. Brothers and sisters, this week we sincerely hope and pray that your day, your week, and your lives are filled with Heavenly Father's and True Parents’ blessings. Aju, Aju!

Hyung Jin Nim

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters. Let’s manifest the Principle first: give and receive action, four-position foundation, “May I inherit the true love of God.” Aju.

Today’s Cheon Seong Gyeong, page 1007, True Father is speaking:

“When you place the picture of True Parents in your room and hang up the Unification Church flag, you come under God’s dominion. I am trying to have you belong to God’s dominion."

Brothers and sisters, when we know that we move in the spirit we don’t really move in the earthly realm, and we have powers around us. Then we understand that as people of faith, people who believe in True Parents, people who believe and have faith in our community, that when we hold up our banner with pride then there is a power there. Of course it does not mean that we won’t be criticized. It does not mean that everybody will be fine with it, but it means that there is a power there.

When we stand up for our faith, when we know that it is our right to believe in our faith in any democratic society, then we know that we are fighting for this faith, because many people around the world are being persecuted because of it, being stripped of their human rights because of it. We are standing up and declaring ourselves, with honesty and truth. No hiding, no more shyness. Being bold about who we are, that is what Father is talking about. When we do that, it requires a boldness that goes beyond what other people think of me, boldness that taps into something that is deep inside every one of us. We have to tap into that if we want to reach into God’s dominion.

Brothers and sisters, it is our hope that we can live with that kind of heart, not only that kind of heart, but that kind of life. We really can become beacons. We can hold up our banner with pride. Be proud of ourselves as Unificationists; be proud of what we believe and the ideas that we hold. When we do that, then society begins to wonder, society begins to look, society begins to see whether or not we are true about what we believe. If we are able to do that, if we are able to true about our faith, then just as the scripture says, we will be able to move these mountains that seem unsurpassable. Brothers and sisters, in this service we hope that you inherit this kind of love for True Parents and God. Let us rise and let’s do Family Pledge number six today.

Main Sermon by Hyung Jin Nim:

Today we heard a very special performance of "Country Roads", a live performance; I think a first time for an international performance. Let's give it up again for the Two Rivers Choir -- live -- “Country Roads!” They actually performed that for True Parents just a couple of days ago, and True Parents really enjoyed it; they were inspired by that.

I'd like to talk to you today about moving with the Holy Spirit. Let's look at some of the World's Scriptures first, before we enter this. This is John 6:38, Christianity. Let's read this together:

“For I have come down from Heaven, not to do my will, but to do the will of Him who sent me.”

Aju.

Let's look at Confucianism today. This is the I Ching, the 50th verse. Let's read this together:

“A sacrificial vessel: The superior man, taking his stance as righteousness requires, adheres firmly to Heaven's decree.”

Aju.

Let's look at Islam today. This is the Koran, 2nd Sutra, 112th verse. Let's read together:

“Whoever submits his will to God, while doing good, his wage is with his Lord, and no fear shall be upon them, neither shall they sorrow.”

Aju.

Now let's look at True Parent's words today. This is from the compilation of speeches, 36th volume. Let's read together:

“I am not the origin. My origin must be the Being who transcends me, and my purpose must be transcendent of myself. If it were not the case, how could I stand in a position to confront this world?”

Aju.

Today, our core scripture that we are going to focus on is Matthew 3:11. Let's read this together:

“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

Aju.

Who is speaking? This is John the Baptist speaking. So here John the Baptist is speaking about Jesus. We have to remember that at that time John was actually viewed and seen as a messianic figure by many people. See, he was a holy man; and he fit the usual expectations of what a holy man would be. He was very spiritual. He stayed away from society. He stayed away from the sinners, so to speak. He stayed away from challenging society. He was ascetic. He lived away from the world.

You see, Jesus was harder to follow because he directly confronted hypocrisy. He entered into cities to witness about God, and the Kingdom. He directly confronted, challenged and argued, and declared that he was the Son of God -- very, very different from expectations of the people.

Jesus ate with prostitutes and tax collectors. He went to all, what the society would call sinners. He went to baptize them, to make them repent and be reborn in the Holy Spirit.

See, Jesus moved with the spirit of the Lord; and that spirit would come, and it would heal, and it would warn, and it also would fill with joy, and it would perform miracles for the people and followers of Christ. In the early days of the Unification Church also, there were incredible miracles, there were incredible healings; there were dreams and revelations that people had. People actually saw True Parents before they met them. They saw them in the dream; these kinds of incredible revelations.

There was baptism of the holy fire in the early days, of the holy spirit, where people felt like electricity flowing through them; like this wave of energy flowing through them, as they were singing or praying, while being in the presence of True Parents. This is what scholars would call ergotrophic spiritual experiences. When people were witnessing, they could see lights, see visions -- almost with their spiritual eyes, almost like with a sixth sense. They could see lights above people that they were witnessing to, people that would eventually become members; just like John saw the dove of light above the Christ.

Now, Unification Church as well, like Jesus, is once again coming into its ministry. It’s reclaiming the early faith that we had, that maybe became weakened as we went along, when we were persecuted and attacked; but that we still have in the bottom of our hearts.

See, we have brothers and sisters now -- and this is very exciting now in Korea at the Headquarters Church with Mrs. Erikawa's leadership -- who are out on the streets every day, every single day. This is not witnessing once a week; this is everyday witnessing. They are out on the streets. They are declaring the Lord. They are witnessing once again in faith. They all have jobs. They all do the 9 to 5, but they still witness. They have a faith that’s alive. They’re going out, after lunch, after dinner; two times per day.

See, for decades, in the Korean Church, and also in other churches around the world, we have forgotten this type of faith: a faith that’s like Jesus, that doesn’t hide away from society, but that goes into it. It goes in and boldly declares, and does not hide. It shares with confidence the truth of God, the heart of True Parents, the heart of God's son.

See, these Jesus-like members, these Christ-like members -- they’re leading a new generation of Unificationists, who are rediscovering the faith that they never really felt in their lives; who are not scared of what society thinks, but have a faith that is alive and courageous. You see, these people live with God every day. They see that God is alive, that He answers prayers; that He performs miracles; that He sends prepared people their way. They’re experiencing this every day. It’s absolutely incredible.

Giving this kind of devotion with the brothers and sisters now, going out into the streets, our ministerial team did something quite wonderful and quite moving to the heart. Our ministers here and at the Headquarters Church, just finished a 21-day condition of 1,000 bows per day! Every day! Pastor Brazil did it too! He did 21,000 bows over the last 21 days. Let’s give it up for these incredible ministers.

That’s the kind of passion they're showing; they’re showing a passion. It’s not like in the West, where many people think of bows like this, “Oh, you’re groveling at God’s feet.” No, no, no. When you bow, you’re letting go of yourself; you’re connecting to a higher power, to a higher purpose, and a higher mission. And, this is what our ministers are doing -- they’ve stepped up. They stepped up and showed their faith; they showed their passion. “We’re going to fight with you, Members,” they are saying. They’re not just saying, "We’re going to send you out on the frontline, and have you guys witness," but they say, "We’re going to do it with you, we’re going to show you our passion." And they did that. I’m so proud of them.

One of our head ministers here, who is the regional director minister, led a minister team in this devotion. He’s 63 years of age -- 63 years of age! He has a full day’s workload, but they were up at 2:30 in the morning, training every day; training 1,000 bow training every day. He’s 63; his ankles were getting beat up, his knees were getting beat up, his wrists were getting beat up. He was going to the hospital because he was in pain. But you know what he said? He kept praying through the pain. But he was also inspired by Pastor Brazil. He said, “Hey, if that guy can do it, I can do it too. He’s heavier than me. I can do it.”

You see, God protected them in the 21 days. We saw that. They’re tired; they’re working all day, plus doing the devotion. They’re training like monks; they’re training hard. And, everyday, they’re out there working, and doing witnessing, and educating in Divine Principle lectures, etc., doing it with this intense practice as well.

And so we’re worried. We pray for them every day, to make sure they don’t get into a car accident while they’re driving. They’re going on two or three hours of sleep every day; we’re praying for them. But, God answered our prayers. He did protect them, no accidents, no car accidents. Let’s give it up once again for God and His protection. (Applause)

You see, once again we’re rising. We’re standing up again as the Unification Church. We’ve been beaten down, we’ve been attacked, and we were stripped of our human rights like in Japan where we’ve been illegally kidnapped, and our brothers and sisters have been abused, and even raped, in that democratic state. And, in that condition, we’re not hiding our faith. We’re saying, “No! We have a right to believe what we believe, and you cannot persecute us based on our religion and on our faith. This is our democratic right. This is what we’re standing up for.” We’re testifying, we’re witnessing again, and this is real faith.

Let’s take a look at Luke Chapter 7, [actually Luke Chapter 11] verse 11 through 13. Let’s take a look at this together:

“Which of your fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake, instead? Or, if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

You see, we give devotions, and we make conditions, and we pray with a sincere heart. These are the things our church has lost. This is the faith life that our church has lost. And, this is why we have stagnated, and have not been able to grow and be inspired.

When we do that, we are emptying ourselves; we’re connecting to a higher power. We’re acknowledging, ”I can’t do everything on my own effort, or my own talent, but I need to tap into something greater, that will connect me to greater talent, connect me to greater potential.” When we do that, then miracles begin to move, and that devotional practice is at the ministerial core of how we train here and how we do ministry.

See, when we empty ourselves, when we release ourselves of the egos and the self-centered pride, when we bow, when we offer devotion to True Parents, when we offer devotion to God, when we thank them, then God comes, the Holy Spirit comes. It fills us up, fills us up with pride about being an Unificationist. It gives us something to work for, it gives us something to sweat about, it gives us something to remember that we are fighting for a greater cause, that people before us, and still to this day, are being persecuted because of such a faith.

And when we stand before the world, and say, "No, you cannot strip this away from me, cannot take this away from me. This is mine, and it is mine, because God has given it to me,” that’s when we’re fighting for our faith.

One of our couples -- so incredibly inspiring -- is witnessing every single day. I heard about it from one of our leaders, Mrs. Erikawa. She told me about the fact that finally in the Korean church, once again, we have people on the streets. They’re witnessing once again. They’re reclaiming their faith. They’re going out and talking to people about the Returning Lord. They’re talking in faith terms, theological terms, not just as patriots or great men, but in theological terms and religious terms.

And Mrs. Erikawa would give me this incredible news. There’s this amazing couple who are out on the streets witnessing every day. When we were out with the brothers and sisters the other day, on Friday, running around on the streets and witnessing, and meeting people, and telling them who True Parents were, etc. but, we were with a different team. We had yet to see this team.

But this sister is in an incredible situation! She and her husband are quite famous in the Unification Church here in Korea, not because of some incredible thing that happened to their life, but actually an incredible tragedy happened in their life.

Just a few years ago in a tragic house fire accident, they lost every single one of their children -- that’s four children. All of them were lost in that fire! And you think about the incredible heart pain that those two parents encountered and had to deal with, how much pain they would have, even in their faith, ”God, how could you do this to me? I thought you loved me, why would you do this to me?”

Think about the incredible type of pain that kind of accident would give you! We heard about this family many years ago when I was in Korea -- this was many years, I think five to six years ago. We offered condolences to them. But I remember, and Hyo Jin hyung was around in Korea too, and he actually visited them. He went and visited that family after it happened. He offered a prayer for them, and then he encouraged them.

One of the really incredible things that I found out is from Mrs. Erikawa. She told me she is on the streets with the members every day. And, she told me that it was actually this family, this couple -- he is a Korean husband and the sister is a Japanese wife -- who is out on the streets, doing this, even after that tragedy.

When we heard that, everybody was crying, everybody was crying in that room. We were all moved in our hearts. We realized that this kind of heroic faith still exists in our church. It’s not dead. It’s not squashed out. It’s not beaten up. It is still alive. They moved through that heart, wrenching tragedy, and they have rededicated their lives to God, and God is using them in that incredible way.

They are like holy lights and chasing away shadows, bringing God’s parental love and His inheritance to the world. If you think about their situation, they could have fallen into complete immobility. They lost four of their children. Every single child, every single child that they had, they lost in a fire. They could have totally fallen into despair. This is not just a story, this is a real person, but they are heroes because they realized that even in spite of that tragedy, even though they couldn’t understand it and explain it and see all the connections, etc., that God still had a plan for their life, that He still had a mission for them to do. And God is using them to save souls. He’s going out there. He’s using them to change people’s lives. I want to give it up for that couple, that incredible Blessed Family! Let’s give it up for that real faith! (Applause)

And, this is what they say. This is their attitude. They say, “We are on the streets in complete gratitude. We’re so grateful we can be running around and declaring True Parents.” This is a person who’s lost all of their children! “We are happy we can declare for God.” They’re running around -- they told us -- with their spiritual eyes open. They’re trying to see people, the people that they’re witnessing to, the people that they’re meeting and testifying to, as souls. They’re trying to see their spirit realm, spirit body, spirit self that needs to inherit that great parental heart, that needs to find that great eternal love. They’re seeing them with their spiritual eyes. They say, “We have lost all our children physically, we’ve lost them; they are in the spiritual world now. But we’re moving with them, and we’re moving with them to see that other people are also our children when we go with the heart of the parent to save them." This is an incredible faith, and just an incredible family!

Let’s look at John 14:26 today. This is one of the very important quotes. Let’s look at this together:

“But the counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

You see, the Holy Spirit comes to us as a counselor, that’s not only something that counsels us and makes us feel good. It guides, it reminds us of what we’re to do and not to do. It tells us, works with our conscience, makes us better people, shapes us into the way the Lord wants to shape us - as this scripture says- gives us a powerful energy and electricity, and passion for our faith life.

And, when we let go of ourselves, and what other people think of us, or doing all of those activities we do in our mind, and we just let go, and give devotion, when we share our faith with boldness, that’s when our faith comes into fruition, that’s when our faith becomes true. See, in the end, people are moved, not by, of course by content, but really people are moved by real faith. They’re moved by people. People are moved by people.

We had Goto-san here -- you all know Goto-san, an incredible man, heroic faith, survived 12 years and five months of illegal kidnapping and captivity, but still was victorious -- he came to the church, he spoke to our brothers and sisters. We had VIPs in the crowd, who listened, who came to the church for the first time. They heard this kind of incredible story, his story. And, so one of our ministers was very worried, actually. He was worried that maybe it was too much, too fast. Maybe they heard too much and too fast from that person? So he asked. He actually asked that guest, “How did you think about that man, Goto-san?”

That guest told us how she just wept her heart out, how she just cried and cried. She was so moved. She didn’t know about everything that he was talking about, but she could feel his passion and his heart. She could feel that he was alive in faith and in love, she could feel the flow of God’s movement.

And so, we can see that truth is powerful, when it is portrayed (expressed) in the lives of the followers. This is how powerful true faith really is. You see, when we speak about our faith, just like Goto-san, we live and testify about the Lord, we show faithfulness, we show filial piety in our life. We begin to change minds by our action, by the way we live, by what we think about.

I remember when we first got here to Korea, there were many people telling me, “We can’t develop the church. We haven’t developed for thirty years. We haven’t grown one bit, for thirty years, because we don’t have great content, because we don’t have the most up to date content, we don't have something that is more exciting, and this is kind of out of date. If we only had this kind of content, and adjust this problem, then we would completely advance and we would create great results.”

But, I realized, this was absolutely false! Our problem in witnessing was not the content. It is not the lack of content. The problem of our witnessing is the lack of the most basic ingredient of an inspiring disciple of any religion, and that is a powerful faith. That is the key ingredient for successful witnessing.

Our Japanese church has witnessed to -- just in the last month -- over 3,600 people! Why and how could they do that? Do they have some special system? Do they have some special curriculum and content? Do they have a special way to communicate, the latest tips on communication excellence, and all those kinds of things? They have none of that! They don’t have special powers. They’re people just like you and me. What do they have? They have thousands and thousands of Goto-sans! That’s what they have. They have incredible people of faith, that when you see them, you are inspired. How could you live like that? It’s incredible. It’s like meeting a saint, when you meet those Japanese members. They just work day and night for the whole world providence, and they do that, and they’ve served all of our churches around the world for thirty years.

When we have thousands of brothers and sisters in any nation -- I don’t care what nation it is -- with the faith and sacrificial filial piety like Goto-san’s, just like that, we will have no problem witnessing, because of the life that we live, how we testify, what we do. When people see that, they are moved, just like those VIPs who were moved when he spoke here, and who said they wanted to join our church.

This is the powerful thing about witnessing. It’s not about the content. It is more about the person giving the content. People are moved by people, just like a person can have an exciting biology teacher, but initially wanted to study business, but because of that teacher, becomes a scientist. Just like that, people get inspired by people.

And in the same way, when we testify to True Parents, they want to see if we are inspiring people. Do we just talk about our faith, or do we live it? Do we go up and beyond, just like those Goto-sans and those Japanese members who have been doing that for the last thirty years? See, when we have people who are excited to contribute, excited to believe and love True Parents, excited to testify that Jesus’ mission is being fulfilled, excited that we live in the most blessed age in history, that’s when the Holy Spirit descends! Not when we have the most advanced content!

It descends when we have real faith, when we have real passion and love for God and True Parents. That’s when it comes. That’s when miracles come, that’s when healing comes, that’s when all that kind of spiritual blessings come, the revelations, the dreams, etc. Let’s give it up one time for our God and True Parents! (Applause)

And what is so exciting is that we are finally seeing this happening in Korea. Finally, the Korean members are remembering the faith, the early faith that inspired them to move this whole nation. We are seeing them fill themselves up with this kind of power, this kind of confidence, the joy and the excitement of testifying, the joy and the excitement of meeting new people and changing their lives and their destinies for the sake of God. It is incredible to experience!

Let’s look at the final quotation from True Parents. This is from the collection of words, volume 14. Let’s read this together:

“An offering should not have any concept of possession. A person, who would be an offering, should sacrifice for his people. He should move forward for the purpose of the whole, not for his own purpose. As an offering, you should set a public goal, and exert yourself for that. As an offering, you should become a foundation, like good soil, upon which God can destroy evil, and establish the way of goodness.”

Aju!

Altar Call Prayer:

We want to pray with one heart, one spirit as one family.

Let us listen to the song of the seven deaths and resurrections of our True Parents. Let’s listen to the power of inheriting the true love of God, understanding what true love is. It is the parental heart -- a parental heart that for the sake of the children will die and die again. It is for the sake of the children to see a greater day, to be free one day and have eternal life. That is the heart of True Love; that is the heart of God; that is the heart of True Parents.

Heavenly Father, we thank You so much for this day that You have anointed us. We want to remember that You move our hearts and minds, not by our intellect, but You move us with Your spirit. Father, we want to be open to You; we want to know that You are alive and although we cannot see You and feel You, we can be in touch with You all the time. We want to have faith that You have a plan for guiding us; that You have a purpose and a destiny that You have endowed every soul with.

Father, we pray that that mission may not be for ourselves, but that we can live with a true parental heart. Our True Parents were victorious, walking the path of death and torture, prison, mocking and chastising, so that one day their descendants and children may be free.

That kind of sacrificial heart is the true heart of a parent. Any persons in this world who truly can move hearts, who can move nations, who can move organizations must understand that sacrificial heart. We pray that anyone who is trying to become a leader in any work that they do, in any career, in any path, understands that leadership with success only comes with sacrifice, that it comes with a passion for the whole to succeed, to let go of oneself, to let go of one’s personal preferences for the sake of the organization and for the sake of the movement and for the sake of the school, for the sake of whatever institution. Father, I pray that You will give us that kind of heart. Father, we know that when we inherit that, we will reclaim our faith, be excited who we are, no longer hide in our shell but come to have pride and confidence in who we are, believe in what we say and testify that the returning Lord is here.

Father, when we go out to the streets and once again challenge ourselves and touch another person’s life, You are changing them. Now we can bow before You, and know that it is You that is doing it. Father, we want to give You glory today, we want to empty ourselves of ourselves. We still want to have confidence in what potential You have given to us. But Father let us realize that that potential only comes about when we can connect to Your greater vision and connect to Your greater network of divine power.

We thank You so much, Father. Be with each and every one of us today. Let us stand up for our faith in this crucial time. Let us not be shaken by what other people say, or by other people who try to chastise and attack us, but let us stay firm on the rock of faith, the rock of believing in True Parents, inheriting that True Love, and living to become a True Parent ourselves.

Father, we thank You so much. We want to offer You a new confidence and faith. We pray that You may bless every single member that is out today on the street in the cold talking about You; witnessing and testifying to our True Parents as the returning Lord. We want to pray for them, to bless them and to let them teach us what faith is about, and let us follow in their footsteps with courage. We thank You so much. We offer all these things with gratitude in our own name as central Blessed Families in True Parents’ Name, we pray, Aju!

Notes:

Matthew, chapter 3

1: In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

2: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

3: For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."

4: Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

5: Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan,

6: and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

7: But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sad'ducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8: Bear fruit that befits repentance,

9: and do not presume to say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

10: Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11: "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

12: His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

13: Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

14: John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

15: But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness." Then he consented.

16: And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him;

17: and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Luke, chapter 7

1: After he had ended all his sayings in the hearing of the people he entered Caper'na-um.

2: Now a centurion had a slave who was dear to him, who was sick and at the point of death.

3: When he heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his slave.

4: And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him,

5: for he loves our nation, and he built us our synagogue."

6: And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof;

7: therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.

8: For I am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, `Go,' and he goes; and to another, `Come,' and he comes; and to my slave, `Do this,' and he does it."

9: When Jesus heard this he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude that followed him, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith."

10: And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave well.

11: Soon afterward he went to a city called Na'in, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him.

12: As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her.

13: And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep."

14: And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise."

15: And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.

16: Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

17: And this report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

18: The disciples of John told him of all these things.

19: And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?"

20: And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, `Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?'"

21: In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight.

22: And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.

23: And blessed is he who takes no offense at me."

24: When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?

25: What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts.

26: What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

27: This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.'

28: I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

29: (When they heard this all the people and the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John;

30: but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

31: "To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?

32: They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.'

33: For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, `He has a demon.'

34: The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

35: Yet wisdom is justified by all her children."

36: One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house, and took his place at table.

37: And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment,

38: and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

39: Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner."

40: And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he answered, "What is it, Teacher?"

41: "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

42: When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?"

43: Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly."

44: Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

45: You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet.

46: You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.

47: Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little."

48: And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

49: Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?"

50: And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

Luke, chapter 11

1: He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples."

2: And he said to them, "When you pray, say: "Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.

3: Give us each day our daily bread;

4: and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation."

5: And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, `Friend, lend me three loaves;

6: for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him';

7: and he will answer from within, `Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything'?

8: I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needs.

9: And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

10: For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

11: What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent;

12: or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

13: If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

14: Now he was casting out a demon that was dumb; when the demon had gone out, the dumb man spoke, and the people marveled.

15: But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Be-el'zebul, the prince of demons";

16: while others, to test him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

17: But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls.

18: And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Be-el'zebul.

19: And if I cast out demons by Be-el'zebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges.

20: But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

21: When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace;

22: but when one stronger than he assails him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoil.

23: He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

24: "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest; and finding none he says, `I will return to my house from which I came.'

25: And when he comes he finds it swept and put in order.

26: Then he goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first."

27: As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!"

28: But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

29: When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

30: For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nin'eveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation.

31: The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

32: The men of Nin'eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

33: "No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a bushel, but on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.

34: Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness.

35: Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness.

36: If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light."

37: While he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in and sat at table.

38: The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.

39: And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of extortion and wickedness.

40: You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?

41: But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you.

42: "But woe to you Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

43: Woe to you Pharisees! for you love the best seat in the synagogues and salutations in the market places.

44: Woe to you! for you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it."

45: One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you reproach us also."

46: And he said, "Woe to you lawyers also! for you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

47: Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.

48: So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs.

49: Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, `I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,'

50: that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation,

51: from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechari'ah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation.

52: Woe to you lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering."

53: As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard, and to provoke him to speak of many things,

54: lying in wait for him, to catch at something he might say.

John, chapter 14

1: "Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me.

2: In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

3: And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

4: And you know the way where I am going."

5: Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?"

6: Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.

7: If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him."

8: Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied."

9: Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, `Show us the Father'?

10: Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

11: Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves.

12: "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father.

13: Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son;

14: if you ask anything in my name, I will do it.

15: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

16: And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever,

17: even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.

18: "I will not leave you desolate; I will come to you.

19: Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also.

20: In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

21: He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."

22: Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?"

23: Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

24: He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25: "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you.

26: But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

27: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

28: You heard me say to you, `I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I.

29: And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe.

30: I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me;

31: but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go hence.

Ambassadors for Peace Banquet

Letter from Dr. Hyung Jin Moon read at the 7th Annual Ambassadors for Peace Banquet in New York.

Ladies and Gentlemen and Distinguished Guests,

Congratulations on the 7th Annual Ambassadors for Peace Banquet. I especially want to commend the recipients of the Excellence in Leadership Award and the newly appointed Ambassadors for Peace. You are members of a distinguished group of people who are seeking to promote a unified world of peace. As Ambassadors for Peace you have joined the world’s largest and most divers network of peace leaders, representing the religious, racial and ethnic diversity of the human family, as well as all disciplines of human endeavor.

The dream of my father, the Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, in creating the Universal Peace Federation was to gather leaders such as you to promote reconciliation and cooperation beyond traditional boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity and nationality. It will take all of us, working in our various communities and spheres of influence to address the very real challenges that our world faces today. My father believes that when we adopt the ethic of “living for the sake of others” as our guiding principle, the walls that have historically divided us will fall down. The world of peace we have all been longing for will then naturally emerge.

I encourage you as you go forth from tonight’s celebration to challenge yourselves to expand on the work you are doing as Ambassadors for Peace and to work together with the worldwide UPF family for a successful year in 2010, as we build the Universal Peace Federation together.

With Warm Wishes,

Dr. Hyung Jin Moon
Chairman, UPF International

Welcoming Remarks:
Yeon Ah Nim

Good afternoon brothers and sisters! (Good afternoon)

It is always our honor to have you here in this sanctuary. On this happy Thanksgiving Day, I hope you guys have a spiritual feast during the service time and have a beautiful dinner with your family members. May you and your family have an eternal blessing with your family on this Thanksgiving Day. Aju!

Rev. Hyung Jin Nim

Good afternoon brothers and sisters!

Let's start by manifesting the Principle. Give and receive action. Four position foundation. May I inherit the true love of God. Aju!

We want to share Father's words on page 607 of Cheon Seong Gyeong. Father speaks about the spirit world. He says,

"In the spirit world, everyone rejects egoists but welcomes altruists. Among those who go to the spirit world after living on earth, the altruists take the top places. This is especially so for those who apply themselves in for example forty countries and live for others with the heart that they would have toward their mother and family, and with the heart of a saint to save the people of the world."

Brothers and sisters, when Father is talking about altruism, he is really talking about the essence of God, the true love of God that seeks to serve and live for others. And this heart is the heart that we as Unificationists seek to try to inherit. You see, brothers and sisters, Father says here, that when we are able to live in that realm -- even though we may have flaws and imperfections -- then we live in that realm of heart, where we are as a parent towards humanity trying to save the children that God so wishes to embrace.

Brothers and sisters, on this Thanksgiving week, it was actually Thanksgiving on Thursday, but on this weekend, we pray that all of us may inherit this greater love, this greater heart and, particularly in this service, to return great glory to God and True Parents.

Hyung Jin Nim's Main Sermon:

Today I want to talk to you about the "True Inheritors." Let's look at some of the world scriptures today.

Let's look at Christianity. This is Matthew 28:19-20. Let's read this together.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Aju.

This is known as the Great Commission, one of the keystones of Christianity and its success. Let's take a look at Buddhism. This is from the Garland Sutra 36. Let's read this together.

"I should be a lamp for the world replete with the virtues of Buddhahood… All sentient beings burn with greed, anger and ignorance; I should save and free them."

Aju. Next is from Islam. This is from the Qur'an 16:125. Let's read this together.

"Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and exhortation. Reason with them in the most courteous manner."

Aju.

And from True Father, this is from the collection of all speeches Vol. 33 p.69, and let's read this together.

"By witnessing through the Divine Principle, we are carrying out a movement to revive love, the world of heart, which transcends time and space. Our worlds and our prayers are ultimately for the sake of love. Let us realize the ideal of love -- that is perfection."

Aju.

Today let us focus on this core scripture from Matthew 25:34-40. This is known as the 'Sheep and goats parable." Let's look at a portion from this section. Let's read it together.

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'"

Aju.

Here we can realize something very important. For Jesus Christ those who inherit his love, those who testify on his behalf and follow him, they are like the most precious jewels in the cosmos. When others treat them well, as the scripture says, they are going to be blessed. They are going to have Jesus' love. It is the same for True Parents. As the inheritors of love, we can capture the ultimate value for God and True Parents. Those who live with the parental heart, that we see manifested in the Seven Deaths and Resurrection, the heart that will go the path of laying down their life for their children over and over again so that the children can be free -- this kind of incredible heart -- those who can inherit that heart for the sake of the world and True Parents, these become the jewels. And whoever helps the least of these children of True Parents will have done the same for True Parents.

Last week we had a wonderful blessing in meeting our brother Goto-san who came all the way from Japan in person. We had a great time with him. He gave an incredible testimony about the victory of faith and the victory of love, how he overcame his oppressors by natural subjugation.

But then after service we had more incredible miracles. On the next day, Monday morning, we gathered at Cheon Jeong Gung with True Parents and had Hoon Dok Hae with them. Then after Hoon Dok Hae, it was Kook Jin hyung's son's birthday, but we asked Goto-san, "Please come to the table with True Parents." And so Goto-san came to the table with True Parents and he just cried and cried, like his dream is coming true. 12 years and 5 months he was tortured and now he could see True Parents! And I love Father's reaction! As soon as we described, "This is Goto-san, the person who went through this incredible turmoil and this human rights violation and yet the first thing that he said when he was liberated was 'are True Parents healthy?' That's the first thing he said! That incredible inheritance of the filial heart!" then Father invited him. He said: "Quickly sit down. Where is the food? Bring him food. Bring him food. Feed him, feed him. My son is hungry!" That was so moving, so moving! When we saw that we were, "Oh my God!" Everybody was crying at the table. It was so amazing!

When we see this kind of heroic faith and when we remember that we have this kind of heroic faith, when we see this we can look at Goto-san and say, "He is a remarkable fellow." But we can also make the mistake of thinking that he has some kind of superpower or that he is not human, and that he is better than all of us. But that is not the case. Goto-san is also a human being just like you and I. He is just the same as us. He is not a perfect individual. But he is heroic in his faith because of his incredible love, the love that defeats even death and oppression. That kind of inheritance of the filial heart, that is what is heroic about this incredible fellow.

When we see his life we see that he is standing on the frontline till this day. He was repenting in his sermon. He said, "I repent that for 12 years I couldn't help the providence. 12 years I couldn't witness to True Parents, I couldn't testify on their behalf." This is a man who was stripped of his human rights, and he is pained in his heart that he could not be on the frontline, running with the members. This kind of incredible inheritance of heart! This is amazing! You see, we don't respect him because he is some kind of flawless, perfect human being. We respect him because he is a true inheritor of the love of True Parents.

It's the same thing when many people think of the Messiah or the messianic figure then we tend to think of him as a flawless being and all that he does and touch will succeed and prosper. But that is simply not true. When we look at Jesus' life, Jesus never succeeded and prospered as a flawless being. He was mocked and persecuted. In the eyes of man he was a complete failure. Even twelve disciples couldn't follow him to the end. They were denying him. 12 people!

Many of our attackers that attack True Parents say that they are fake and they're a fraud, that they are not real messianic figures. They say that because they are not perfect and because their family is not perfect or because their church is not perfect and because all the things that they pray about are not coming to pass, then that's a proof that they are false. But this is not understanding the truth of the Messiah.

When I was 20 I remember even myself thinking, "Why does True Father talk about world peace? Why does he always talk about world peace, do conferences on world peace? We cannot even unite this church, we cannot even unite this community! Talk about world peace! We cannot even unite True Family! Talk about world peace!" But I realize I didn't understand what the Messiah was or what true love was.

The Messiah doesn't come as a God, perfect, flawless, he comes as a man who experiences the joys and the ills, the selfishness, the poverty, the war, the pain of humanity. True Father lived most of his young adult life in total poverty. He endured two wars, and he has seen death and destruction right in front of his eyes. He suffered in torture camps and forced labor camps. He endured racism and hatred based on faith. He has been spit on, literally spit on, cursed at, beaten, torn and broken and he has seen his children not obey him and even hate him in their immaturity.

But we say, "This is not the characteristics of a Messiah." No, no, no! The Messiah endures all the pains, all the sufferings that normal human beings encounter. And I heard members tell me that they cannot appear in the community because many of their children have married outside or because their families aren't perfect, and because Father talks about family salvation -- that the family has to go to Cheon Il Guk -- so they think they have no adequacy to come in front of True Parents or to stand on the front line because their family is not in order. But I tell them, "What is important is to understand this: Individual salvation does not mean that that individual is perfect. And in the same way a family that is on the path of salvation is not flawless. But despite of the ordeals that we encounter we center ourselves on the inheritance of true love and on the sharing of that inheritance of true love."

Even in our own family we can say that we are not perfect beings. We have disappointed True Parents many times as children, but True Parents continue to fight for God, they continue to love God first, and that in the end became the greatest teaching to all of us, to love God and the world. Every pain that we encounter in life, the Messiah feels and experiences this as well. The fact that all things aren't perfect doesn't take away from the fact that True Parents are the Messiah; it actually confirms that they are the Messiah. Because despite all the imperfection around them, despite all the betrayal that they have had to endure, despite all the hate that they had received, they continue to live for one purpose, endlessly, year after year, decade after decade, to share the inheritance of God's true love.

As a young person I always thought that true love was just encouraging the children, listening to our complaints, giving us what we wanted and when we wanted, "Daddy, give me that." "Okay!" "Now I know you love me." (Laughter) Or not telling us the truth if it hurts. This kind of love! This in Buddhism is known as "foolish compassion, foolish love."

And I realize that this was the false type of concept. This was never what True Parents wanted us to inherit. In fact, they were always strong with us, about how we must love God, how we must serve the world, always emphasizing that.

True Parents wanted us to inherit a true love that was not thinking of ourselves, or how others have to be sensitive to me, or how everybody has to watch me, but a true love that would sacrifice and serve. "Go the path of suffering and slender and even scorn so that others may be free from such a path, like our descendants or our future children and grandchildren." He didn't change because we complained, or because the world persecuted him; he never changed. He remained solely focused on the liberation of God's heart. And in the end that became the greatest teaching to every single one of the children.

A true Messiah can endure the inevitable evils and sufferings of the world, not because he doesn't feel or encounter them -- he does - but because he lives not for himself but for the world and for the Creator of this world. Let's give it up for God and True Parents! (Applause)

Because of that heart, True Father has fought for us to create a better world. He has fought for us to have the pride of having the most successful religion at the time of their founder. He fought for that, so that we could have that pride. It's the inheritance of this heroic faith and this heroic love that lets True Father overcome the difficulties and imperfections that he sees in his life.

Just in the month of October we had a report given to us by the World Mission Department. They reported that the Japanese church witnessed to over 3,500 people last month. In one month, 3,500 new Unificationists! Let's give it up for a big birthday! (Applause)

They did it by declaring True Parents. 2,000 new members, 1,500 members that used to attend church but now are coming back to the church, and it is this kind of amazing inheritance of True Parents heroic faith - testifying on behalf of True Parents -- which is at the core of the Japanese church's success.

But the question may arise, "Why haven't they grown according to the potential that we see when we look at the Japanese church?" The answer is very easy. For thirty years the Japanese church has had to help the entire world providence. They had the sole responsibility of funding the entire world providence. But I want you to imagine just for one second, if they for thirty years didn't have that burden and they testified and continued to live with this kind of incredible faith, think about how amazing the Unification Church would be in Japan. It would probably be one of the biggest religions there already.

This is not to say that in the Korean church, or in the American church, we don't have this potential to inherit this kind of faith and inherit this kind of excitement. That is not true! Even in Korea, the church in the early days had this kind of faith. It had this incredible inheritance of this excitement of love for the world that wishes to seek and save spiritual lives by testifying. It had this incredible burning desire.

We saw incredible histories in the beginning of the early church in Korea. We were able to witness to some of the most powerful Christians in all of Korea. We had the runner-up for the presidency of Ehwa University -- that is the largest women university in Korea, it's a Christian evangelical school -- she converted to become a member. We also converted that university's pastor! The pastor converted after hearing the Principle! That was how powerful things were happening at the time.

That kind of exciting faith was so incredible. Christians would see that and say, "My God, we have to watch out for these Unificationists!" That's where a lot of the oppression and attacks started. But as time went on, then because of those attacks we slowly lost that kind of faith, that excitement for our tradition, the excitement that the Lord has returned.

But I still believe that we have that deep inside of us, we have that in the resources of our mind and heart, we have the desire to wanting to testify to True Parents, to change the world, to be able to save souls. We still have that in our hearts. True Parents overcame the difficulties in their life, not through ordinary means but by extraordinary faith, by extraordinary inheritance of a heroic type of faith and love for God. For us now, we as a movement need to tap into that heart again, to re-inherit that kind of faith and love for True Parents and the world, to become true inheritors that move out into the world. Just like the Japanese church is actually doing right now.

This is why we need new faces, like Goto-san, because they remind us that our faith is not dead, that we are still alive, that we still have passion in our life, that we still have movement forward to be able to be effective in sharing that the Lord has come. When we re-tap into this beginner's mind we have the power to change the nations and the world. This was the most incredible sight that in the early days people who were not members saw. They saw that incredible power.

In the present time the Japanese church will continue to grow. They are estimating 40,000 new members in one year; that kind of incredible revival in Japan! And here in Korea we can also do that. We also can do it. We also can have that kind of faith and that kind of success that comes through inheriting that kind of heroic love and faith.

When we become, once again, excited about our faith, excited to share what we have, to share the truth of the Principle, to start talking to people, discussing with them the issues of theology that Christians have dealt with the last two thousand years without answer, then we are able to engage in that blessing, in that new era.

No one in the Korean church or in the Korean nation will do this for us. It's only by our returning to our faith and our love for the world, returning to that powerful thing that started it all. Actually it was the faith that was inherited by the Japanese church! By coming back to that faith we will be able to speak to the nations and declare to the Lord that we are the true inheritors and that the Lord has returned and that the nations will hear it. If you believe it, brothers and sisters, let's give it up for God and True Parents! (Applause) It is time!

Let's finish this sermon with one last quotation of True Parents. This comes from Father's prayer, an incredible prayer.

"May all those who follow Thy heart be as candles lighting the five continents, lighthouses on the great sea. May we become witnesses, knowing the mission we shoulder, ready to testify to Thy deep heart, and going forward as incarnations of Thy love."

Altar Call Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You so much. True Parents thank you for being victorious in inheriting the essence of God, in sharing that inheritance with us so that, Father, we can inherit that kind of parental heart, the heart which sees the whole world in suffering and wishes to save that world. Father, let us have the heart of the true inheritors, the inheritors that have the true value, an ultimate value, in the eyes of True Parents and the Lord.

Father, we thank You so much that You have gathered us in this place, so that we can, Father, remember once again who we are. Father, let us have purpose in our life. Father, let us not only pursue our own ambitions, but Father, let us also inherit the greater love that seeks to be able to go even the path of difficulty so that our children and our grandchildren may be free from such things.

Father, we pray that we may inherit that kind of incredible true love, the love that was manifested in the seven deaths and resurrections. True Parents walked the path of death, descended into hell to take our place, and they would do it over and over without end to the day that their children may enter Your graceful kingdom.

We thank You so much. We want to inherit that true love today, and we pray that we may have a greater faith, a greater love that can truly move the nations. Father, we pray and we know that that starts from within. We want to inherit that today, we want to testify on your behalf and we want to be proud of who we are, whose children we are, and what we are as a Unification Movement. We thank You so much. Allow us to inherit Your love and use us in a great way. Use us not for ourselves but use us so that we may be the greatest blessing on earth. We thank You so much. We want to dedicate this grace and this thanks to You on this day.

We offer these prayers, praying with gratitude and thankfulness in our own names. Lifting up the name of True Parents we pray as their children. Aju.

Notes:

Matthew, chapter 25

1: "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.

2: Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

3: For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them;

4: but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.

5: As the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

6: But at midnight there was a cry, `Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.'

7: Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps.

8: And the foolish said to the wise, `Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'

9: But the wise replied, `Perhaps there will not be enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.'

10: And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut.

11: Afterward the other maidens came also, saying, `Lord, lord, open to us.'

12: But he replied, `Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.'

13: Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

14: "For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property;

15: to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

16: He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more.

17: So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more.

18: But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.

19: Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

20: And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.'

21: His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'

22: And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.'

23: His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'

24: He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow;

25: so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.'

26: But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed?

27: Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.

28: So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

29: For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

30: And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.'

31: "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.

32: Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,

33: and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.

34: Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;

35: for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,

36: I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.'

37: Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?

38: And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?

39: And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?'

40: And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'

41: Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;

42: for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

43: I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'

44: Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?'

45: Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.'

46: And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

My Father is Healthy, and There is No Confusion in Regards to Succession - Interview with Hyung Jin Moon

[Following is a translation of an article about an interview of the Rev. Hyung Jin Moon conducted by Mr. Hwan Young Kim of the Korean news daily Joong Ang Ilbo. There was no editing done on the article, so that the article as it was originally written. Picture courtesy of journalist Jeong Dong Choi.]

World president of the Unification Church Rev. Hyung Jin Moon, who attained a degree in philosophy and comparative religions from Harvard University, has formed close friendships with Buddhist, Catholic and Protestant church leaders in Korea and abroad. Recently, he completed a 21,000 bow special devotional offering.

The Unification Church approaches us in various forms: Japanese Unification Church believers who are so glad to meet Koreans (since Korea is where the “Messiah” was born), claims of splinter groups of the Unification Church, performances of the Little Angels who have taken Korean culture overseas since 1965, joint marriage ceremonies, doctrines that cite the Bible but appear to be so different than Christianity, Korea-Japan and Bering Strait tunnel projects, the role the Unification Church played in the process of Carter, Kim Dae-jung and No Mu-hyeon visiting North Korea, etc. When people find out about these various aspects of the Unification Church, their responses vary. Some feel admiration, some are mystified, some are enraged, while others are curious. Sometimes people are confused.

There are some people in America who claim that the Unification Church is threatening American democracy. Their claim is that the Unification Church has won over the leadership of America -- people like U.S. Senators and members of the House of Representatives. Part of the evidence they put forth to support their claim (that the Unification Church is a threat) is that the Washington Times as a mouthpiece for conservatives. The Washington Times, which belongs to the Unification Church, was President Ronald Reagan’s favorite newspaper.

On the 9th, top executives of the Washington Times were fired. Some of the American media, including TPM, is reporting that conflict between successors of the Unification Church is behind the firings.

The Reverend Dr. Sun Myung Moon, who celebrated his 90th birthday on January 31 of this year, decided on a succession plan centering on his three sons who graduated from Harvard University. Rev. Hyung Jin Moon, who is in charge of the religious field, studied philosophy and theology at Harvard. This reporter met with Rev. Hyung Jin Moon, the world president of the Unification Church (Unificationism) in his office at the Unification Church World Headquarters Church in Chungpadong, Seoul. Following are the main points of the interview with him.

Q: What happens to people when they die?

A: During a person’s life, he stores a certain type of “energy” based on his actions. If he does something good, he gains stores “energy,” but if he does something bad, he stores bad “energy.” When he goes to the world after death, he will be surrounded by spirits who have similar energy as he. That is because similar people are attracted to each other.

Q: Is there no Heaven or Hell?

A: There is no Heaven or Hell, but the good spirits and evil spirits are apart. You could say that Hell is where one is separated from God. On the other hand, people who have abandoned selfish ways of thinking and lived a life of helping others live with similar people in the spirit world. Some people ask, “Shouldn’t people who did bad things receive a more severe punishment?” Let’s look at it this way: When there is someone whom we don’t get along with near us, our minds become uneasy. When there is someone out to get us, we endure even greater suffering in our hearts. To have to live for eternity with people who harmed others throughout their lives because you harmed others throughout your life is a very distressing and scary proposition.

Q: Please tell me about your experiences with Buddhism and Catholicism.

A: After graduating from high school, I went to Fairfield University, which is run by the Jesuits, for two years. This was before I transferred to Harvard University. It was while I was attending Fairfield University that my older brother suddenly died due to an accident. The priest who taught religion and philosophy comforted me greatly at the time, and helped me overcome the feeling of loss that I had. I was always very interested in Oriental religions, and was crazy over Bruce Lee in high school. I once visited the Shaolin Monastery in order to learn martial arts and Buddhism. I was close with a Buddhist priest (Korean name is Il-mi) who came from Korea to study in Harvard. Once I spent a summer in a monastery in Italy. Coming in contact with Buddhism and Catholicism was a good opportunity for spiritual searching and learning.

Q: What was it like to meet the Dalai Lama?

A: He is a true saint of this age. He was a marvelous person. I have always been a fan of his writings. Normally, people can only meet him for around five minutes, but I was able to engage in religious dialogue with him, covering various subjects, for around one hour.

Q: If the Unification Church were to proclaim, “We are not Christian,” then wouldn’t many conflicts between Christianity and Unificationism be resolved?

A: It seems that there is some misunderstanding. We are not a Christian denomination.

Q: How many people believe in Unificationism?

A: There are about 20,000 core believers whom we call “central members.” They truly do a lot of work. They volunteer sacrificially for many events and for the sake of witnessing. If we include the people who come to church at least once a year, there are 300,000 believers. The number of people who have filled out the form to join the church is 1,200,000. The number of people who have done so around the world is 4-5 million.

Q: What does Unificationism see as the relationship between religion and science?

A: We believe that both religion and science are based on inspiration from God. We look at the Bible on the basis of the fruits of modern science. The Bible was written by God’s inspiration but human beings wrote it. We do not accept the Bible as 100% literal fact. There is a lot of symbolic and metaphoric language in the Bible.

Q: What do you think of evolution?

A: We accept that evolution takes place but we do not accept Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Science should be based on evidence by Darwin’s Theory of Evolution has too many premises that are not proven.

Q: Is the Reverend Dr. Sun Myung Moon the “Messiah?”

A: Yes, that is true.

Q: Is he God?

A: He is just a person. However, he has perfectly inherited God’s love.

Q: Is he the final “Messiah?” When he leaves, will God send a new Messiah? Is he the only Messiah?

A: My father totally inherited God’s love, for the sake of all humanity, and is spreading that love throughout the world. My father was victorious and completed his role as the Messiah. There is no need for another Messiah to come. There are many tribal messiahs and national messiahs who need to inherit God’s love for the sake of their tribes and nations.

Q: There is a claim that he is the Maitreya Buddha, to use Buddhist terminology. Don’t you think that Buddhists would be angry to hear such a claim?

A: I don’t think so. Buddhist encourage each other to “attain Buddhahood,” don’t they? Anyone can become a Buddha, according to Buddhism. The Messiah, or the Buddha, is someone who works for God’s true love, for Buddha’s compassion. From that point of view, our perspective may be closer to Buddhism.

Q: What will be done if a doctrinal issue arises after he goes to the next world? Will the issue be discussed in a forum such as a religious conference, or will he speak with the earth from the spirit world?

A: Of course we believe in prayer, but I think using a council is a better way to resolve doctrinal issues.

Q: If God exists, then what is the reason that he is not believed in universally, even though he created humanity?

A: God gave us freedom. God does not want us to love him because we are his creation, but out of our own choice.

Q: What are your views on democracy? Some claim that the Unification Church is attempting to establish a world government in which religion and state are one.

A: Democracy is a very God-centered tradition. Therefore, we respect democracy and have recently employed democratic principles in the way we manage our church. God established the democratic system through the “Founding Fathers.” The reason we oppose communism is because of our conviction in democracy. The Unification Church could overcome persecution thanks to the freedom guaranteed by democracy. We do not seek to establish a world government.

Q: When a religious leader dies, there are many cases in which there is a question of who will succeed him. What is the situation in Unificationism? Are preparations being made for the procedure of succession?

A: Yesterday, I talked with my father for eight hours. My father is healthy. As long as he is here, he is the top decision maker. If he is not here, then my mother is the top decision maker. Because of my mother’s presence, there is no confusion regarding succession in Unificationism.

Q: As we see many of the 2nd generation enter the leadership of the Unification Church, isn’t there some criticism regarding succession by heredity?

A: Succession by heredity implies that everything is being given to one’s children. However, in the Unification Church, our religious lifestyle and the management of assets are separate.

Q: What will happen to Unificationism in the future?

A: It is characteristic of new religions to be intense. The believers offer everything and devote themselves entirely to their lives of faith. That is because they are in competition with existing religions. Many changes have already taken place in Unificationism. The kind of intense sacrifice that was asked of early members is no longer asked of all but the most devoted believers and Unificationist pastors.

Special Testimony by Mr. Toru Goto

Hyung Jin Moon
November 21, 2009
Headquarters Church, Seoul Korea

Welcoming Remarks:
Yeon Ah Nim

Welcome brothers and sisters, welcome to the headquarters of our Unification church. Today we have a guest speaker; I am sure you all know him and want to meet him. We heard about him so much but today we are going to meet him in person. He came from Japan. We want to welcome Goto san. Let us give him a warm applause. Thank you Goto san for your true faith for True Parents.

Hyung Jin Nim

Welcome brothers and sisters. Let's begin by manifesting the principle.

I hope all of you picked up the pamphlet that is being given out. It tells this incredible story of not only one man but thousands of brothers and sisters particularly in Japan who are not only being persecuted but are having their human rights being stripped away from them. Their democratic freedom being stripped from them. This is not only a Japanese issue as the holocaust was not just a German / Jewish issue. It is a worldwide Unificationist issue just as the holocaust was a worldwide Jewish issue. We need to realize that although Japan may be far away from us and that although Korea is a different country, this is something that does impact our community. This is something that we need to find justice in. I want to share in this context True Father's words.

"What kinds of people live with the hope of the love of God? They are those that can cross joyfully over the valley of death that brings sorrow to humankind. Those are the people who hold on to the hope of God. Therefore you should not become someone who in the face of death resents and laments over all of the affairs of this world. Instead you should become someone who can stand before heaven with joy and be proud of the value of your death. We should know that God is looking for the sons and daughters of hope. God cannot help loving a person who feels the joy of heaven in such a situation. He cannot help but answer the cry of a group of people who cry out to him from such a position." (Cheon Seong Gyeong, page 783)

Brothers and sisters today in this modern world the group who are crying out to him in this kind of situation are our Unificationists. Let us give it up for our worldwide Unification family. Today we want to really honor those who have been through these illegal, forcible confinements and this undemocratic deprogramming. We know that a lot of our brothers and sisters not only in Japan but in other countries as well have encountered and have gone through the trauma of that. Today we want to remember them and also instill within our hearts the incredible victory and the incredible hope and faith that has brought these incredible heroes of our faith to be able to stand now on the world stage and to be able to talk about the incredible holocaust that has been perpetuated against these people who truly serve the Messiah with faith and love and filial piety. Brothers and sisters let us all rise and do the family pledge.

Introduction of the speaker by Hyung Jin Nim:

Brothers and sisters when you came in you should have received this pamphlet entitled "Abduction, Confinement, Deprogramming, and a Modern-day Holocaust." We encouraged the brothers and sisters to take a look at that to inform themselves. We need all brothers and sisters to be educated about this issue. It's a very big issue to understand and to learn about it, and also to talk about it. The world needs to know that the Unification Church has been a victim at the hands of illegal practices, because we're a community of faith, and we have true faith, and we have the truth and because we serve True Parents. This is why our human rights have been forcibly stolen, in many of our brothers' and sisters' cases around the world.

This is the time where we really as a unification community must not be irresponsible in a sense that we say it's a Japanese issue. It's not. It's a human rights violation, with over 4,300 cases. This is a Unificationist worldwide issue. Brothers and sisters, we absolutely encourage all of you to take a look at what happened - the real stories are in there - and understand that it's just a very small portion of the incredible number of victims that are present in our church.

Today we are going to have Mr. Toru Goto speak to us. A lot of us have heard about him. We spoke about him many times during the service. A lot of us have seen his pictures. After he was able to leave his confinement, after 12 years and 5 months, we heard some of the incredible details. They're just atrocious, absolutely atrocious. It's a horror that is happening in a modern democratic state, Japan, the 2nd economic power in the world. It's an absolute atrocity. He was confined for over 12 years, in a room the size of six "Tatami mats." The size of them is very small. Now notice how small that room is. Probably it's not more than 10x10 feet. He was confined and kidnapped there and all the windows were barred up, mashed up, so he couldn't leave. Twelve years he had to spend there, not ten days. If any of us were kidnapped for one day or even ten days think how dramatic that would be. This is 12 years and 5 months. This is unbelievable.

Mr. Toru Goto was born in Yamakata, Japan, on the 2nd of November, 1963. He's very smart. He went to Nihon University and his older brother invited him to learn the Divine Principle. Then later he became a member of the Unification Church. After graduating in 1987 with a degree in Architecture, he started working in a construction company. That's when his first kidnapping occurred in October, 1987. He successfully escaped pretending to surrender his faith after one month of confinement. He was kidnapped again many years later on September 11, 1995. The confinement continued for 12 years and 5 months until he was released on February 10, 2008.

Brothers and sisters let us give Goto-san a big round of encouraging applause for his great incredible faith (Applause)

Incredible! I was speaking with him downstairs and I mentioned that in Korea one of the greatest saints is a Buddhist monk by the name of Son Cheol Sinim. I told him that Son Cheol Sinim went for an ascetic practice and stayed in a small room for 8 years as a training practice. That's revered. It's something incredible. Eight years he spent in a tiny room practicing and confined. He didn't let himself out. Goto-san is not even a short 8 years. His level of faith, dedication and perseverance for 12 years and 5 months of kidnapping and forced confinement is absolutely amazing.

On October 2008 together with other victims and determined people, he founded a civil group called "The Association to Eliminate Religious Kidnapping and Forced Conversion." At present he serves as vice-representative of the group. Brothers and sisters, before we invite him up let us watch this brief introduction video of this issue. Let's see the video.

(The video title is Abduction and Confinement; it summarizes Mr. Toru Goto's confinement story).

Brothers and sisters as we welcome Goto san to the stage I want all of you to rise up and give him a big warm round of applause. Here is one of the heroes of our faith. Let's give it up for Goto san.

Main Sermon: Testimony of Mr. Toru Goto:

I'd like to express my deep gratitude to God, True Parents and to our international presidents, Hyung Jin Nim and Yeon Ah Nim that I was given this opportunity to come to the Headquarters Church to give my testimony to you today.

I'd like to testify to you today about my experience of being confined and kidnapped for 12 years and 5 months. It's a long period so if I tell you everything, you'll be here until tomorrow morning, so I'd like to focus just on the points where I was in my greatest struggles.

I'd like first to explain to you about the apartment where I was confined. What you see now is an 8 story building nearly in the center of Tokyo, and I was in this room for 12 years. This is how the door was locked. There was a chain this way from the inside and there was also a padlock on it. This is the window. You can see there is wire mesh in the glass. Normally, with a window lock you can still open the window, but when you see the hole in the middle there, you have to enter the key and turn it in order for the window to open. All the windows were locked this way, so they couldn't be opened by me.

This is the layout of the apartment. It's a good layout to confine someone in. Two sisters have been confined in such an apartment in the same building on a different floor. The reason why this layout is good for confining people is this. I was in the bottom, in the 6 mats room. Above that there is a kitchen and a bathroom, and a place for washing up. Of course I went to the bathroom, and I took a bath. You cannot be there for 12 years and not take a bath, but this was the layout so the person just can live in the space below without having to go anyplace else. Because it's an eight story building you have to go by the main entrance in order to get in and out, and you cannot go to the main door of the apartment without going through the other 2 rooms, and you have to go through another door to get to the main exit of the apartment.

This is an apartment that has been reconstructed in order to confine people. This is a place in Tokyo called "Okikubo," so please remember this place. This is where this abduction started. The place got reconstructed so that the people confined there, especially the Unification Church members, could not get out unless they leave the church. So it's a confining apartment building. This is what was going on and even today is going on around Japan; there is this kind of thing going on in various places. I'd like you to know that although Japan is a democratic country and legislatively there is a guarantee from the constitution, still these things are going on. Remember that fact.

So let me tell you what was going on in that apartment. First of all -- and this is true with many people who were confined -- a person being confined wants somehow to get a message out. So many people cry out, they scream, and the person next door can hear that voice saying, "I am confined here, I want to be helped!" They cry out that way, so that's what I did in the beginning. This is how I shouted: "This is a confinement place, help, call the police!" Day after day I'd cry out like that but then after a while I began to realize that nobody is going to hear me. Maybe I need to be louder, maybe if I have a higher pitch in my voice it might work. So I began to cry out like a woman's voice and that kind of higher pitch in my voice was loud, but then my confiners would cover me with sleeping quilts. Several people were with me in the apartment and they would put me under the quilts so nobody could hear me shouting.

Then when I was taking a bath, there was an exhaust fan above the bathtub and sometimes through it I could hear the sound of other people in the building taking a bath. I thought if I could shout through that fan they could hear me, so I shouted and cried out into that as loud as I could. Then the person who was trying to get me to leave the church would come into the bathroom. He immediately would grab me by the back of the neck and pull me down and drag me all the way to the kitchen and drag me to the back room. That was the way I was spending my days.

The man who tried to convince me to leave the church was a man named "Miyama Takashi." He's among many people who are doing these kinds of activities. Some of them are Christian ministers. So what do they say to the people when they have them in such a confinement? "You're being confused, you're being lied to, and you're not able to think with your own mind. You're the slave of Sun Myung Moon, so that's why your family and I brought you here to protect you, so you will never leave this place till you learn to think with your own mind."

They would start feeding people all the nasty and terrible lies and rumors about True Father, True Parents and the True Family. All these one-sided things they start feeding them.

This "Miyama Takashi" would come to Korea several times and he would gather materials from former members and other people in Korea, then he would take those things back to Japan, and he'd use these materials to try to convince the Unification Church members to deny their faith. This content that he was telling us was really terrible but we had to listen. Of course, it's all untrue, the separation of blood for example, and all the terrible lies about the sexual scandals involving Father. He would give that content with very graphic terms, very concrete. They know that even if they would leave that stuff in my room, I wouldn't read it. Therefore they would sit beside me and read it to me and force me to listen to it.

As I was listening I felt as though my spirit self had been slashed, cut by a sharp knife. That cannot be true, it's so shocking. I knew that this is not true but being in a confined place I was forced to listen to it day after day.

When we think about True Parents we think about the bright aura and the glorious mission they have, but that image of Father slowly began to change. It became unimpressive and began to crumble. This is why most of the members who are confined and are put through that kind of experience -- seven out of ten people -- are not able to endure this kind of pain. You may wonder why so many strong people left the church. It is because of these confinement places. This is terrible place where this false information is repeated over and over, day after day and eventually several members are not able to endure that kind of experience. So they lose their faith.

I also had this experience for just a brief moment, to think that Father actually is a satanic existence, and I could feel Satan whispering in my ear, "Is this the kind of man you believe is the Messiah? Are you going to continue to believe in this kind of man?" This is the kind of incredible spiritual experience that I was going through.

When I was confined I was visited by many former members. Those are people who were confined and through this kind of experiences left the church, and these are all people who loved God, True Parents and worked hard in the church. I was also visited by many members who had been working with me in the church, even my team leader in a workshop, who left the church and tried and hoped to convince me to leave the church as well. She was blessed with the 30,000 couples blessing but after that she was confined, and when she got out of that she returned to the church, but then she was confined a second time.

After the first time of confinement and escape there are good chances that people opposing will try to do it a second and a third time. That' s why now in Japan there are many members who change their names and addresses and live underground in order to avoid the repetition of this kind of experience. This team leader came to me and she said," Goto, I'm glad to see you after a long time." She said, "You're doing something really stupid, why don't you understand this?" and she began to cry in tears, but I said, " I don't think what you said is right". Then she began to shout, "Aren't you listening to me?" There was a cup of green tea that was still hot, and she picked it up and threw it into my face. I became wet. When she was my team leader she loved me so much, she guided me really wonderfully. I could never imagine that she would do this to me, that she would throw the tea in my face. She wasn't this kind of person before. She was a wonderful person when she was with me in the church.

So many former members like that visited me in my confinement place; they all looked very different from when they were in the church. They don't have hope, there is something about them very different. The only thing they live for is to oppose the Unification Church. That's the way they had to change. These people would try to convince me to deny my faith, and after a while it psychologically become difficult to endure. I really came to the border where I didn't know if I can continue with my faith. This is the place where many people have been confined, and you begin to feel you would rather die than betray True Parents. At one point I was in so much in pain. So at night I'd pray, "God, if possible please don't let me wake up tomorrow, please just take me to the Spirit World tonight." Sometimes I'd pray like that.

I was confined when I was 31 years old, and I was approaching 40 in confinement, and I began to wonder whether I am going to be separated from society for the rest of my life. I couldn't scream, I couldn't make noise, so I decided that the only thing I could do is to fast. "I'm going to protest, to fast." So I fasted for 21 days on 2 occasions, and on the third occasion for 30 days.

Then my family was more and more unhappy with that. After my 30 day fast my physical strength was at the limit. I thought I needed to stop the fast, so I called my family in and I said I will stop fasting. I told them because I expected that they would give me some food the next day, but the next day I was given no food. So I said to them, "I'm sorry. I actually stopped fasting." And the family said to me, "You are ready to die, right? Why don't you fast till you die?" So I thought, "Maybe it's God's will that I die here." But I decided, "That's not right, I can't die here." So I asked them honestly to give me food, and from that day they did.

You know when you cook rice, you cook with water, and so they would take the water from cooking the rice, put it into a small bowl and give me this water. That's what they gave me 3 times a day and a sport drink once a day. I thought I should fast. I thought maybe they were doing this to help me recover from my fast. But this kept up a week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks. They were serving me the same way, the same food. This was the same as not eating anything at all. And I began to feel I may die of hunger.

There was a refrigerator right in front of me in the room. I thought I can take some spices and eat those spices like mayonnaise, some sauce, ketchup, and maybe they would not find out. I would endure by taking a little bit from that each day. But after a while I discovered that someone took all those away and hid them so I couldn't find them. Of course, it was very different from Father's situation in Hungnam, but it reminded me very much of that. And when you're hungry like that, you begin to lose your rational thinking. You are desperate to eat something, anything, and in the kitchen sink there were some apple peels and some cut-off portions of carrots, and I ate those in a way that no one would notice. But then soon they stopped leaving those things in the sink.

And finally I thought of the rice that was not cooked. Before you cook rice you have to let it sit for a while in water, so I thought of eating the raw rice that was sitting, soaking in water. That was hard but I would put it in my mouth and chew it until it became liquid before swallowing it. Then I tried to grab a whole handful, and then they put water in there and cooked the rice in that. I was sitting at the same table with them. And they would start to think, "It seems the rice these days is kind of watery." Because I would take some rice they were cooking it with too much water compared to the amount of rice, and they began to notice that there was too much water in their rice. I kept asking God to help me so they would not find out what I was doing, and fortunately until the end, they didn't realize that I was doing that, until I was released there, which was about 2 years later.

Gradually, they began to give me more food over that period. They were eating regular meals but I was given pickled, white radish, roots and things like that, the same menu every day. This is how they explained, "You did all that work in the Unification Church We went all through this trouble to create this environment for you, but you don't try to think for yourself, you don't try to find out about the Unification Church on your own. That kind of person doesn't deserve to eat regular meals." That is how they justified cutting down my food.

On February 10 last year, 2008, my family came into my room. They asked me, "Do you want to find out about the Unification Church?" But over the years I had never changed my position. Over the years I was telling them, "You call this protection? This is not protection, this is arrogance. This is confinement and an attempt to take away my Unification Church faith. Stop this crime, stop this human rights violation!" That is what I kept telling them during the time I was kept there. When my older brother heard me saying that he said, "OK. Get out of here." I was 44 years old then. I left there without a penny in my pocket. I was angry about that. I had an argument with them but I was malnourished, so they picked me up, and they threw me out of the front door. They tossed me out, and my older brother picked up a pair of shoes that I was wearing when I was first confined and threw them out at me. So that is how I was released after 12 years and 5 months.

I'm truly grateful to God and True Parents for letting me maintain my faith during that long period, but this is after 12 years. I didn't know what to do after I was thrown out of the apartment just like that. The only church location that I knew in my head was the Headquarters Church in Japan, so I started walking towards that. There was a police box on my way, so I entered there and I told them what had been done to me. I said, "I was confined there in that apartment right there for 12 years," but I was not expecting much.

Many times in these confinement situations, the police are actually involved, but the police officers always say this is something between the parents and their children, "We are not going to get involved," and in most cases the police refuse to have anything to do with it. I was not expecting much from that policeman, and sure enough he didn't do anything. He refused to listen to what I had to say. So I said, "All right. But any way, I was thrown out of the apartment without a penny in my pocket. Please give me at least a train fare," but he said, "I can't give money to a stranger," so I asked him to draw a map then. I used that map to walk to the Headquarters Church.

I later saw it was a distance of about 10 km. I thought maybe I could walk about 3 hours. But because I had not been walking for a long time, about half way there my knees began to hurt and I couldn't continue to walk normally. So I picked up a stick that was lying by the side of the street and used it as a staff in order to continue to walk. Finally I came to the main road in the vicinity of the Headquarters Church. I was in so much pain, and I couldn't walk anymore. This was in February and it was a cold period, and I was kicked out in the evening. This was late at night and I was malnourished. And I was afraid that if were to climb the stairs and fall, I might freeze to death. I was wearing a sweater but in the fight we had at the end, it was torn a bit, and I was wearing a jersey, training pants and the pair of shoes that you saw a while ago.

I had been cutting my own hair over the years, so it wasn't cut very cleanly and I was using a walking stick and could barely walk, so I probably looked like a beggar and people would pass by but everyone would ignore me. At that time, I was telling myself, "I don't know where God is going to lead me, but I will continue to do my 5 % until the end." I wasn't sure I was in the vicinity, and I wasn't sure how to get exactly to the church so I decided to ask someone. First I asked a man. He said, "I don't know." Then there was a young woman and when she came around the corner, I called out to her, "Excuse me, I think that the headquarters of the HSA-UWC is somewhere in this neighborhood. Do you happen to know it?"

This is how I was looking with my walking stick. I could barely stand. Then she stopped and said, "I'm a member of that church," and she showed me a copy of the Holy Songs and I thought that this is really the person that God has sent to me. I told her what had happened, and when I was confined I didn't have any information about what may have happened to True Father. I thought it was possible because of his advanced age that he may have passed on to the spirit world, so I asked her, "Is True Father healthy?" She smiled and said, "Yes, he's in good health." I was so grateful to hear that.

She called a taxi and gave me some money. That is how finally I could make my way to the church. But I was in a situation where I couldn't go to the toilet by myself so I was taken to the hospital that day. The doctor who saw me diagnosed me with malnutrition and inflammation of the knees.

Most of the people who carry out this kind of abduction and confinement are the family members of our brothers and sisters. Unfortunately in Japan the church has a very bad reputation, and the families who have adult members in the church become so concerned. They go to the internet and check many things. They try to figure out what to do, and in most of the cases they come in contact with the Christian ministers who oppose our church. The family members, with the feeling of grasping at straws, receive counseling from these ministers, and they fill them with one-sided wrong information and make the family members take the wrong decisions. "Your child is risking his life with his faith. Are you willing to quit your job for the sake of your child? There is only one way to get your child out of that church and that is to put them in protection to convince them." That is the abduction and the confinement.

Whether or not they are successful in making the person leave, there is a large amount of money that is given from the parents to those people who carry out the abduction and the confinement. My parents paid the full amount, and I think they paid more than $100,000.00. This is a business that is going on. There are members who were convinced to leave, and there are lawyers who are working with these ministers who are opposed to our church, leftist lawyers. These leftist lawyers convince the former members to sue the church and they take the church to court and all that money goes to the lawyer.

It is very clear how these ministers and lawyers are operating. They're very good at criticizing the Unification Church. They would use a very small situation and make the Unification Church look like the embodiment of evil. Even now this is going on across the country. The government officials know what is going on but they're refusing to do anything about stopping these crimes of abduction and confinement. Opposing ministers, leftist lawyers and the mass media are all involved in this, and right now in Japan it is extremely difficult to solve this problem, and we can't do anything about it. Right now five members are being confined, but we cannot do anything about it.

In this kind of situation, after I was released, there were many things that surprised me. First, I got on the train for the first time in a long time, and I saw everyone sitting down with some kind of device in their hands and they were using them with their thumbs. I couldn't figure out what they were doing with their thumbs. Now I use one of those, too. I was very surprised by that in the beginning.

Another thing that surprised me was that we have True Children here with us today. I was really wonderfully and amazingly surprised to see what wonderful work the True Children are doing. We put so much faith in them now, they are wonderful. In Japan we have no way of dealing with this confinement and abduction. In Japan we have a very urgent providential responsibility but there is no way to deal with this. There are sisters here now in Korea who experienced the confinement but they have no one to talk to and share their experiences. So the people who have had this kind of experience have no place to go for counseling or talking, always keeping these experiences in themselves, always living in fear that they may be abducted again." Maybe today I will be abducted again!"

This is a democratic country, but that is the situation they're dealing with until now. But now the True Children are standing in the forefront and they're dealing with this issue, not just in Japan, but also in Korea and in America, and we're hand in hand now, in order to resolve this problem in Japan. We cannot allow the violation of the human rights of our members to continue. The fact that they are standing up like this is so wonderful. So as a representative of people who went through the confinement experience, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. God and True Parents are giving us this providence, I'm truly so grateful. As one person who has been a victim of that confinement, I want to fight with you to resolve this problem. That is my determination. Thank you very much.

Hyung Jin Nim:

Brothers and sisters, once again Goto san, let us give it up for him one more time.

Altar Call Prayer by Hyung Jin Nim:

Dearest most beloved Heavenly Father, thank you so much Father for allowing us to hear the story, the ordeals, the suffering but also Father the incredible victory of our Unification brothers and sisters. Heavenly Father we want to uplift our brothers and sisters today. We want to acknowledge and remember those that have gone through this incredible type of persecution. Father we want to understand how precious our faith is and Father that even those who followed and served Jesus or any of the prophets were slandered, many stoned and even murdered.

As Unificationists we walk the path of serving the returning Lord. Father let us remain proud of our faith. Let us know that it is our democratic right and Father it is our human right to have our faith and to practice our faith in freedom. Father we want to pray for those brothers and sisters who are here with us today and have encountered such things. We pray that their hearts may be consoled and those traumatic events Father may be used in their spiritual lives to inspire others, to raise others and also to fight for the freedom of our Unificationists today and forever.

We thank you so much that our brother Goto san is standing on the front line to reveal the truth that Unificationist members have been persecuted to the degree that our human rights have been rejected and stolen. Father we want this to be a testament. Father how much, how important and valuable is the faith in True Parents that you have sent to this earth! Father, thank you so much for Goto san's message. We pray that we may learn from it, that we may meditate on it and that we may stand up together with him and other brothers and sisters in this room and around the world that have encountered such things. That we may truly stand up for our religious rights.

Thank you so much today. Bless the work that he does. We will do our best to bring this to closure and to bring, Father, restoration to these people's lives. Members, brothers and sisters, we thank you so much and we honor him as he has lived a life in service to you and of love even to those that persecuted and confined him and tortured him. He continues to harbor no ill feelings and continues to love them to this day. Father we thank you so much that you have sent such saints to the world to teach us and guide us. To show us what is faith and what is love for God and True Parents. Thank you so much. We want to honor him today. In our names we pray. In True Parents name we pray. Aju!

Brothers and Sisters one more time let us give it up for Goto san. We want to honor him and give him our appreciation with these flowers from all the brothers and sisters all over the world. We will stand with you until the day we can practice our faith with freedom in Japan.
