'Moonies' mull future without founder - Interview of Hyung Jin Moon

Christopher Landau
October 7, 2009
BBC religious affairs correspondent, Seoul

It is one of the most controversial religious movements of the last century.

Founded in Seoul in the 1950s by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, Unificationism has attracted hundreds of thousands of members worldwide.

But the movement has been accused of cult-like practices, with its leader's followers dubbed "Moonies".

As Sun Myung Moon approaches his 90th birthday, he has handed over key responsibilities to one of his sons.

Hyung Jin Moon is just 30 years old and grew up in the United States, where he studied theology at Harvard University.

His background means he has already been exposed to a wide range of religious traditions and seems unafraid to introduce aspects of how other faiths worship into Unification Church services.

Attending a meeting for English speakers on a Saturday afternoon at the Unification Church's Korean headquarters, the very first sounds I heard were pretty unexpected.

Family values

Earlier that week, I had interviewed Hyung Jin Moon and met members of the church's choir, rehearsing for the weekend's services.

They had been singing a specially written song about true love, reflecting the traditional family values which are so important in Unificationist beliefs.

But the service I attended began not with one of the movement's own hymns, but with contemporary mainstream Christian songs written in the US.

The adoption of such music is just one of the potentially surprising innovations being adopted by Hyung Jin Moon.

Members of the Unification Movement are probably best known for their approach to marriage.

Photos of mass weddings performed by Sun Myung Moon, where hundreds of couples marry simultaneously, have fascinated newspaper readers around the world for decades.

But in this area of church life, change is also in the air.

After the service, I met Frank and Elizabeth, who married in 1982 -- having never met each other beforehand.

They both flew to Seoul in 1982 to take part in a "matching ceremony" -- where the Sun Myung Moon would personally choose which man married which woman.

Frank remembers that he felt "very nervous" that day, but also says he was committed to the belief that the choice made on his behalf would be the right one.

"We grew up with a value to have trust in the judgment of Reverend Moon at that moment, so basically we were prepared to accept," he said.

Changes

Handing over the choice of a future life partner to Sun Myung Moon has been a defining feature of the movement -- but his son is clear that such practices are under review.

He tells me it would be logistically impossible for all Unificationists approaching marriage to be matched in the traditional way.

"It's modified greatly, where now people can meet, they can date, find out about each other. But the seriousness of the vow is still there," Hyung Jin Moon tells me.

"Will we continue in the way that we did, with the huge numbers? I don't believe so."

Unificationism is a movement which has already seen several changes of emphasis in its short history.

Originally called the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, in the 1990s it became the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.

The emphasis now seems to be shifting back to conceiving of the movement as a church, and using that clearly defined religious status as a way to campaign for the freedom of its followers.

For decades, some members have faced dramatic interventions from concerned relatives, especially parents, trying to get them to leave a movement.

Hyung Jin Moon is particularly concerned about the situation in Japan, where he alleges that several hundred members of the movement have been kidnapped against their will by parents trying to force their children out of Unificationism.

'Challenged'

"There comes a point where we have to say 'no' -- no longer will we endure abuse because of our religion," he tells worshipers at the headquarters church in Seoul.

He told me that followers of the movement are unsurprised that their beliefs are often challenged.

"Every ancient tradition and modern tradition has faced misunderstanding and even persecution. We're not exclusive to this misunderstanding or treatment."

"But we also want to stand up for our rights -- if our rights as democratic citizens are violated, we do want to stand up and take non-violent means to legally find justice," he said.

They are the words of someone who seems determined to establish the faith founded by his father as a credible part of the religious landscape.

But Unificationists' belief that Sun Myung Moon and his wife are the Messiah and 'true parents of all humanity' puts the movement at odds with orthodox Christian churches.

So, even if the music is getting more mainstream and mass weddings are a thing of the past, Unificationism has a long way to go before it is simply regarded as one religion among many.

Fearless True Love

Opening Prayer by Lucilla Gray:

Let us all pray.

Our beloved Heavenly Father: Father, we’re all here today to say that we love you. We’re determined, Father, to make this world a better place, with True Parents’ hope, True Parents’ ideal and the Divine Principle vision, Heavenly Father. We want to open our hearts and minds to be connected, to stay connected to your heart every minute, every breath we take, Father. A very important thing: we all have true love in us. It’s in our DNA. It’s in our blueprint, Father. We all have true love. May we inherit this true love. May we be bold and courageous and tell the world how wonderful you are, Father, how wonderful your vision is, how great True Parents are. Father, this is a very special day, and from this moment on we’ll be connected to your heart. Let us all have a great time here. I pray in our names. Aju.

Welcoming Remarks
Yeon Ah Nim:

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters. It is great to see you all. Let us give praise to our Heavenly Father and True Parents, for letting us gather here and worship. Let us give praise and thanks to True Parents and Heavenly Father. Today we have such a beautiful breezy and bright day. I sincerely hope and desire that your week will be blessed and filled with Heavenly Father’s grace and true love. Welcome, Brothers, and Welcome, Sisters.

Hyung Jin Nim:

Hello brothers and sisters, let’s begin by manifesting the Principle: give and receive action, four position foundation. May I inherit the true love of God. Aju! Welcome brothers and sisters. We want to welcome our Japanese ministers; about 40 of them are here. Let’s give them all a big round of applause. Nihon kara irashatta no bokaishatachi tate agete kudasi. (Would the ministers who are here from Japan please stand.)

Yes, let’s give them one more round of applause, brothers and sisters -- all the way from Japan, our Brothers and Sisters from Japan. Thank you. Arigato Gozaimashita. We’re going to start with Cheon Seong Gyeong today. We’ll start with Book 13, Father speaks.

He says:

“From God’s viewpoint, the essence of the universe is love. With love, unification will automatically be achieved. If we love at a higher level than Satan, Satan will also be pulled in. God created heaven and earth in order to give us the utmost goodness and love.”

Can we all do an Aju? [Aju!]

Brothers and sisters, it’s always so important and wonderful that we’re able to come together to worship. It’s such a blessing that we live in a free, democratic world. Let’s give it up for democracy! We have freedom of religion! This is so precious. And we know from the Principle that it is the Abel-side realm, the democratic realm that protects religion. It protects faith. So we’re so very grateful that we’re able to come together in freedom and worship together. Brothers and sisters, when we do that, we’re going to bring God and True Parents more joy, and our week is going to be stronger. It’s going to be more blessed; we’re going to be wiser. So brothers and sisters, this week we pray that truly many things can come to fruition, and the many things that have been left undone will come to fruition this week.

Meditation Practice:

Let’s unify our mind, body and breath. Let’s start by unifying our body. Let’s stretch towards the earth today and receive the Universal Prime Energy that flows through, breathing in, as we pass our beating hearts, let us breathe out, stretch towards the heavens today. Let’s really stretch. Let’s stretch our bodies, stretch our faith. Let us receive what God wants to give us today, His new compassion, new wisdom, breathing in, as we pass our living hearts; breathing out, towards the earth again. Let’s stretch towards the earth, receive the beautiful stable energy, breathing in, as we pass our living hearts, breathing out towards the heavens let’s really stretch, stretch, stretch our faith today. Let’s receive this new inspiration, God’s new future for us, breathing in, and as we pass our hearts let’s breathe out.

Let us now unify our mind. Let’s take a seat and let us sit up at the front of our chairs so that we may keep our back straight and enter into our first visualization and meditation practice. Let us gently close our eyes and let us visualize, not this sanctuary but walking in a beautiful bamboo forest. It is the morning. We can smell the wonderful fragrance of this fresh bamboo grove. We can hear the leaves rustling in the winds high up above. We can see the beautiful green stalks of bamboo standing strong, but flexible in the wind. We can feel the soft earth below, and as we feel the morning sun rays and listen to the beautiful sparrows that fill the air with their song, let us walk forward and we will notice a beautiful stream that is meandering down. We notice that the bamboo grove will continue right down to the edge of the stream, and let us stand now in front of that stream and I want you to pay attention to the beautiful sound of that stream. Notice that beautiful healing water, the cool refreshing water. Notice its transparency and clarity. Notice the morning sun rays passing through and touching the stream bed beneath.

We will notice also the beautiful fish and life that is awakened by the morning sun and as we stand and listen to that sound and feel the presence of this incredible creation, let us gently close our eyes -- continue to hear the sound of that stream, and as we breathe in deeply, in our hearts let us say, “I am alive,” and as we breathe out deeply, in our hearts let us say, “Thank You.” Once again, as breathe in, in our hearts let us say, “I am alive,” and as we breathe out deeply, exhaling, “Thank you.” One more time, deep inhalation, “I am alive,” and as we breathe out deeply, “Thank you.”

God and True Parents have blessed us with the blessed life, to inherit the true love of God through that life, to become greater blessings to our spouse, to our family, our children, to our community, our nation, world, and to God Himself. Let us join our hands and manifest the Principle together: give and receive action, four position foundation, coming all together, may I inherit the true love of God, Aju, Aju.

Brothers and Sisters, let’s take this time to pray. We’re going to pray particularly for those in the spirit world, our “Abel angels”, the angels that look after us and those good spirits that are brothers and sisters, our parents, and grandparents. We want to pray for them, acknowledge them, and encourage them today and thank them for being with us in our daily walk with God. Let’s all join our hearts and pray -- as we listen to the song, let us pray together:

Dearest most beloved Heavenly Father, thank you so much, True Parents. Father, we’re so grateful to be able to be here today. Father, we’re here because of your incredible path, the path that you had to walk, through seven deaths. But through the power of true love, the power of the parental heart, the love that will even die and die again for the sake of the children, over and over and continue to give, that incredible parental heart, Father, because of that heart you have been resurrected and give us that same resurrection power, incredible strength from within that we can inherit from your true love. Father, thank you so much for allowing us to come together here because we know there are many things that we are dealing with in our lives. We’re dealing with relationships, dealing with many different elements in our life, Father, but we know that you want to “in-dwell” and be with us and in us, in everything. Father, we want to be present, we want to be aware and awake so that we can see your miraculous workings, your supernatural love for us every single day.

Father, we thank you so much. We want to offer our hearts to you today; we want to ask you to come down, Father, and be with us today. We want to ask you, Father, to dwell amongst us and within us so that we can manifest your Principle, your true love, in our minds and in our emotions, in our actions and in our deeds, in our words. Father, we thank you so much for protecting us and surrounding us with angelic beings. We thank you for protecting us all the time. We want to thank those Abel good spirits -- the spirit world, Father, which is protecting us and looking after us. We want to give them thanks today and want to acknowledge them. Thank you so much for this present day. We are grateful from our hearts. Once more we pray in the names of our Central Blessed Families, together as one heart we pray. Aju, Aju.

Thank you, Brothers and Sisters. I want to ask you all to rise, because we’re not just going to stop at prayer, we’re now going to actualize it. Brothers and Sisters, let’s encourage the person next to you. If you came with your spouse, it’s now time to give her a big hug, tell her you love her three times. Tell her thank you, three times, let’s encourage the person next to us, come on.

Interesting Story:

We like to start with something a little interesting: I heard a story about a young girl named Jenny and she was just about two. Her Mom just had a new born baby boy. So happy, happy, happy. Mom came back from the hospital and now was taking care of the baby and Jenny was experiencing the joy of having this new amazing younger brother. One day, the mother had to go back to the hospital for a check up. So, Auntie came and took care of Jenny and the Mom went to the hospital and when she came back she asked Jenny, “How was it Jenny?” And Jenny said, “Mmm, mmmm.” So then she said, “Jenny, can we pray? How about we pray and thank God for your younger brother?” Jenny said, “OK, OK we can do that.” So they closed their eyes and folded their hands. And Jenny prayed, “Dear God, thank you so much for my wonderful younger brother. You know I asked you for a puppy. Can you at least make him bark?”

Brothers and sisters, come, let’s stand up!

Oh, that was a little delayed today. But you got it.

Main Sermon by Hyung Jin Nim:

Brothers and sisters I want to talk to you today about Fearless True Love. As you all know, as we talked about last week, there are times in a community's life and in our Unificationist life that there are difficult things that we have to endure, different levels of persecution, because we are still a minority. There are still these difficult things that we are enduring right now and as we talked last week we are still in the midst of this incredible path. So I want to start with some of the world scriptures today.

Christianity (Luke 23:33~34)

“There they crucified him… and Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.' ”

Again we see the compassionate love of Christ, the love of Christ, even though he is enduring punishment, carrying the sins of the world. He still forgives those who are persecuting him.

Buddhism (Dhammapada 2)

“Hatreds never cease through hatreds in this world; through love alone they cease. This is an eternal law.”

The Buddha talked about how only goodness, how only positive action and thoughts can overcome hatred etc.

Let’s look at Islam. This is the Koran (Qur’an 60:7)

“It may be that God will ordain love between you and those whom you hold as enemies. For God has power over all things; and God is oft-forgiving, most merciful.“

And let’s look at True Parents’ Words today. This is from the collection of sermons, 121 (DP Predestination 121:173). We will read this together.

“True Love has influence on the enemy. If you overcome the first, second, third and fourth difficult situation with love, the enemy will disappear.”

Today I want to center my words on the book of Psalms. This is Psalm number 3. And this is a Psalm of King David when he fled from his son Absalom. Absalom was the son that betrayed his father and ended up trying to kill David and ended up mobilizing forces to destroy his father. So David is in a very awkward situation because out of all the enemies that he has faced -- and he has faced many battles -- this puts him in a very difficult situation because this is one enemy that he does not want to kill. This is one enemy that he does not want to destroy. And so here we see the song of David. He is singing from his heart with incredible chaos arising in his mind. He is praying and singing this at the same time.

Let’s read this together.

1. Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me!
2. Many are saying: “ God will not deliver me”.
3. But you are a shield around me, O Lord: you bestow glory on me and lift up my head.
4. To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill.
5. I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side.
7. Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God!
8. From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessings be on your people.

Aju. Let’s look at these first two verses; “Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! Many are saying: ‘God will not deliver me.’” When one walks the path of the Lord, when one walks with the Lord, there are many foes that rise against that kind of person, “Who are you, who do you think you are? What makes you think that you can say that? What makes you think that you can think like that about yourself?”

Not only do they become numerous but many times they will rise up to stop us in our tracks. This happens whenever you do something that God has called you to do. It can be something as simple as having a new creative idea that helps you build a new invention. It could be starting a business or it could be something as serious as declaring your faith and professing your faith. Whatever we do that God is asking us to do we will always find people that are around us who say, “You can’t do it” or “God will not deliver you, you won’t make it. It is not going to happen”. We’ll have naysayers in our lives.

In the second verse it says that many say that God will not deliver David, that He will not bring success to him, that God will not let him have glory. And very openly we face this as Unificationists here in Korea. We face this many times. Particularly many evangelical Christians view us as a heretical cult. They call us "heretics among heretics". They say this very publicly and openly. And so for us it is important to understand that this is part of the landscape that we live in. It is part of our reality on the ground that we are actually seen as heretics. It is important that we understand that we are a minority and that as such we have rights in a democratic world.

In the last couple of years Korean evangelicals have come under a lot of "fire". In the 1990’s there were the burnings of Buddhist temples. This (picture) is Hwagyesa in 1996. There was a minister that was arrested, a pastor who was arrested for burning down the Blue Dragon Temple, burning it down to the ground. We were just out on the street at that time. As you walk the streets you’ll very frequently see people with placards that say, “Jesus is heaven, if you doubt that is hell.” These things were plastered all over on temples and other religious places here in Korea. Even in the land were there is relative religious harmony these kind of things happen.

In the last couple of years also the government has come under a lot of pressure, particularly for the “gospelization” of the police force. They were making posters that they were using like this, that said “Gospelization of the police force”. An electronic map was created that omitted all Buddhist Temples. Even all of the National Treasures were omitted but the recreational fishing sites were all there and the gas stations and convenience stores were all there. Churches were all there, of course, but no temples and none of the National Treasures. So, we can see, this is the kind of landscape we live in. As Unificationists we have to be aware of this, otherwise we are going to be surprised when we start sharing our faith.

So let’s look at verse 3 today of David’s Psalms (Psalms 3:3) This is a critical verse.

“But you are a shield around me, O Lord: you bestow glory on me And lift up my head.”

You see, what David is saying is that the Lord is our shield. Only the Lord can protect us. Only our faith in God can protect us. No immature actions, like violence or lashing out. These things cannot protect us. These things would only confirm our inability to stand with dignity in persecution. It is very important to understand what David is saying about being persecuted. It is so important to hold strong to our shield, which is our faith and which is God, faith in God. The only way we win in this kind of situation is by our faith.

I was talking to Rev. Fauntroy. He is a human rights activist. He walked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He’s a civil rights leader and he told us how one day in the south, they were in a church. They had been protesting that day, peacefully, and they were resting in the church. They were actually having service that morning. The children were singing hymns that morning. They were in Sunday school and all of a sudden a huge explosion occurred, a huge explosion, which literally tore that church in half, literally, physically in half. It was a bomb. It was the white supremacists that exploded that bomb and blew up that church. And he said that there was so much weeping on that day. He told us how there was so much crying. You could hear the kids crying and you could hear chaos. There was so much havoc. Rev. Fauntroy was there.

The dust settled. The day went on, and at night time it was so quiet. It was so quiet and Dr. King asked Rev. Fauntroy, “Could you please sing a song that will inspire us and give us strength?” And Rev. Fauntroy sang the Impossible Dream, a song that really touches my heart every time I hear it. I am just so moved by that song. And they listened to that song with the people that survived that terrorist attack. They listened to it, they wept, they cried tears of sorrow for those who had lost their lives on that day but they also cried tears of hope because they believed. They once again realized what they were doing. They were standing up for something that was so important. And you know the lyrics of the song:

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star.

This incredible song brought this church to tears in the midst of this kind of tragedy. And what was amazing, he told us, is that they slept through that night and the very next morning, they went out again, they went out to protest again, the very next day after their church had been bombed. They went out and protested for their human rights.

You see, freedom of religion and belief in God and our True Parents is our RIGHT, brothers and sisters, it is a right that we have as democratic citizens living in democratic societies. And the government must uphold this constitutional right. It must protect its citizens regardless of creed, color or religion. It must protect its citizens. And by being proud Unificationists, at this time particularly, by understanding with certainty that it is our democratic human right, our God given right, to have our faith, to practice our faith, we bring awareness and justice to the many, many families that are receiving persecution because of their faith.

I want to go to verse 4 (Psalms 3:4)

“To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill.”

David is singing this song. He says to the Lord, “I cry aloud”. Brothers and sisters we can cry, we can cry if we are persecuted and we are hurt. We can cry. It is OK for us to cry. The Israelites were persecuted, they were enslaved for 430 years in Egypt, says the Scripture, 430 years they cried. They were under slavery, they were under oppression. They had tears streaming down their faces.

You may know the situation we talked about last week. 1966, starting with Pastor Murayama, an evangelical, and a group of pastors, an illegal organization was created and the abduction of Unificationists began in Japan. This was in 1966. At first it was very small like ten abductions per year. We have the graphs, the statistics. But by 1993, it was reaching a height of 375 illegal kidnappings in one year. That is one Unificationist per day, being kidnapped illegally, forced into confinement against their will in a free democratic society. More than one per day. These incredible crimes happened.

In 2009 Kook Jin Hyung was assigned to Japan. He went to reorganize the church there. And when he discovered what was happening he could not believe it. We were just briefed on this a couple of weeks ago but he was so shocked at the severity of these human rights violations. The amazing thing is that since it started in 1966 exactly 43 years have passed. It mirrors exactly the 430 years of persecution that the chosen people of Israel had to face under oppression.

Why didn’t the members do anything about this? This is an egregious crime in a democratic state. Why didn’t members do anything about it? We were so shocked. What is happening? Why are members not doing anything about it? But we realized that a certain culture had developed.

Brothers and sisters, after being kidnapped, running for life, many had to jump through windows, as you know with the Goto-san’s case. We have Goto-san here [picture]. Goto-san was abducted and kept for 12 years and 5 months. It was illegal kidnapping, forced confinement. Twelve years. He was kidnapped when he was 29. He emerged when he was 42. He is over six feet tall. He weighed 39 kilos when he got out. He was completely emaciated.

This is in Tokyo in Japan in an apartment; he was confined for 12 years, all through his thirties. His entire life during his thirties is gone. And he emerged, left that area, was able to get out, 12 years 5 months later. He went to the police and they did absolutely nothing about it. And then he went out into the street and tried to find the Unification Church Headquarters building. Because 12 years and 5 months had passed he did not know where to go; we could have moved, we could have changed. So he was walking in that general direction.

The first person he bumped into, he asked, “I need to find the Unification Church headquarters. Could you point me to their headquarters?” And amazingly that first person he met happened to be one of our sisters. She brought him to the church but it was very amazing. When he arrived at the church everyone was shocked. Here is this man. He is straggly, he is totally emaciated. He’s got these ragged clothes on. He’s got 12 year old shoes on and people at the headquarters were saying, “Who are you? Are you sure?” And so, he explained his story. He was taken to Ilshin Hospital, this is one of our hospitals in Japan. This is where these pictures were taken. Here, he weighed 39 kilos and for 50 days he had to be treated with nutrition and exercise in order for him to get to some normal health.

But this was happening, brothers and sisters, not in Africa, not in China, not in North Korea. This is Japan, the second most powerful democratic nation in the world. Brothers and sisters, as you heard last week, we have cases of sisters that had been confined three months. They were systematically raped. One father, who paid for those abductions, found out what happened to his daughter. And the father actually committed suicide because he was so guilt ridden to what happened to his daughter.

This kind of incredible crime against humanity has happened because of their faith, because of the fact that they are practicing the Unification religion. This is not permissible in a democratic society. This is not permissible, this is not correct. This is not upholding the democratic principle.

You know, we were so shocked because the brothers and sisters had contacted the police many times. The police had done nothing about it. The police had turned them away every single time. So then this culture developed: Pray for your enemies at least, pray for your kidnappers. So, they were praying, they were living the religious life. They were praying for the persecutors as Jesus said, as True Parents said, to do. But see, for us, in our perspective, we both grew up in America, we both grew up in a democracy, we both are American citizens and for us, we can pray for our persecutors. That’s fine, but we cannot throw away our human rights! We cannot throw away our human rights, Aju. We cannot throw those away. That is our God given right as democratic citizens. And we cannot let people take away our rights and just say we pray for them. There comes a point when we have to say, “No! No longer will we endure abuse because of our religion.” Stopping these “pastors” from these illegal enterprises means to be compassionate with them. It is compassionate. Because if they think they can rob people of their right to believe in God, to believe in the religion of their choice, this is a violation of democracy and religious freedom.

So, the scriptures say that God answers us and that He calls us, that He is our shield when we come to him, when we remember that He is the one who can protect us. No other force can do it. He reminds us that when we have faith we are valuable as his children. We are chosen to be brave in standing up to declare our True Parents as Messiah and Lord. Remember, we are like the apostles of Christ who declared that Jesus was the Lord even though they were persecuted. Stephen was stoned, in the Acts of the Apostles. He was stoned to death.

Let’s read verse 5 together. Let us read this all together. Psalms 3:51

Lie down and sleep; I wake again, Because the Lord sustains me.

It was September 11th, 1906, in Johannesburg, South Africa. That is a very interesting date coincidence: Nine eleven. This was the first real time that Mahatma Gandhi stood up and started organizing the Satyagraha movement. “Satya” means Truth and “graha” means “holding firm”. So "Satyagraha" means “Holding firm to Truth” -- when there is injustice. He was facing the promulgation of a new act that made the Indian population register themselves to the government. They were opposing that. They were saying that there is prejudice against the Indian population. And so Gandhi stood up and he called the fellow Indians to defy the new law, to suffer the punishments, but not to resist through violent means.

Seven years they struggled, seven years. Thousands of Indians were jailed, including Gandhi himself, flogged, even shot for holding strikes, for refusing to register, for burning the registration card, etc., for engaging in other forms of non-violent resistance. But while the government was successful in repressing these Indian protesters there was an outcry because of the fact that the government reacted so harshly in the face of peaceful protesters. And this actually forced a negotiation, a compromise between the South African government -- particularly General Jan Christiaan Smuts -- and Gandhi’s side. And so Gandhi expressed what Satyagraha means: in other words, a kind of love force, soul force -- he used those words. That it is a force that stands strong in the face of injustice, it is not weak. It does not react in violence but it stands strong, it is firm, it holds strong to its place and it loves and it is love and it is based on the spirit.

Until May, as you may know, the police in Japan were imprisoning Unificationists. They were coming to our church and imprisoning Unificationists under the allegation of violation of commercial law, and this was all over the news, on NHK etc. But there were -- so far -- over 4,300 confirmed cases of criminal abduction, forced confinement, psychological torture, even rape. And there was not even ONE media article about it, not one apology. This is religious persecution. Some make allegations that Unificationists donated a lot to the Church. Well, we have to realize that our members are as serious as any other religious tradition, as serious about religious life as any other major religion.

When Buddhist monks or Catholic priests become ordained, there is a vow of total renunciation that they practice toward worldly attachments. Many donate their entire possessions, even houses, things that maybe could have been inherited, to the Catholic Church, to the Buddhist Temple. In the same way, many of our members around the world have practiced this of their own free will. Now saying that Unificationists are “guilty” of this means to not understand that there are these practices all over in other religions as well. But to say that because this exists in the Unification Church it is OK to rob Unificationists of their human rights, their freedom of religion, their democratic right, that it is OK to kidnap and force confinement and even rape Unificationists… this is not permissible in a democratic state. This is outrageous and egregious.

We are here with members from all over the world who want to help stand up for the human rights of our brothers and sisters in Japan. They ask us, “How do I do that? How do I stand up for them in Japan? I live in Russia. I live in America. I live in Yugoslavia. How do I stand up?”

Brothers and sisters, how do we stand up? We stand up by being proud Unificationists, sharing our faith, being solid in our faith, knowing that it is our democratic right to believe in our religion.

Let’s give it up for the Unification Church. Come on, let’s give it up!

Nobody in the free world can take our religion from us. Not the President, not anybody else. This is our freedom of religion. We must be very clear about this as our right as democratic citizens. And someone will ask us, “Why are you going out and sharing so much about UC now?” We are going out and sharing pamphlets, sharing, talking about the Church. That’s what we believe. Lots of people don’t know that the Unification Church still exists. “We do not know what you guys believe.” We are sharing what we believe. We are sharing this as our democratic freedom. We have been persecuted so much that we have kind of lost our identity. We’ve forgotten that we can stand up for our faith, that we can have belief as our democratic right. This is so important to understand.

We were talking to a brother. He is working in business, the president of a very successful clothes manufacturing company. He is a Unificationist. As you may know, in Korea and Asia there are many issues within the business world. They are drinking, when they have business partnerships and negotiating. There is drinking, there is a smoking culture, there is even an infidelity culture, where there is infidelity while business is being done. He told us that he was very upfront about his faith in the very beginning. He said, “I am a Unificationist, I am not going to drink with you guys, I am not going to smoke with you guys. I am negotiating with you, I’d love to do business with you but I am not going to drink with you.” He said that he was very upfront about it in the very beginning. He said that it was so difficult at the beginning, so hard because everybody said, “What’s wrong with you? You want to do business… don’t you want to make money?” They kind of ostracized him.

He is now in his fifties, and very successful. He has a wonderful business, very successful, and he said, “At first it was tough. I was ostracized a little bit, looked at as strange, but in the long run it became easier and easier. Over time people said, “You know, he is one of those Unificationists. He doesn’t drink, leave him alone.” They ended up defending him in his faith. When we do the opposite, when we aren’t upfront about who we are, when we aren’t upfront about our faith in this situation, then, as he said, it only gets harder. Because every time those situations occur in the business world, in the drinking culture, another excuse has to be made. It is endless. It gets harder and harder to continue to make excuses. So he said that he is so happy and he is proud that he was upfront about it from the very beginning.

The reason why I talk about this is that in the long run it is so important for us to know that it is our right to be Unificationists, that it is our right to practice our faith and our religion. It is so important to declare that it is our right, to declare that it is our faith. This is so important so that in the long run we can practice our faith freely without illegal persecution, so that the day will come that the Unificationists can practice their religion without persecution. And I long for that day.

Let’s give it up once more for the Unification Church.

And let’s read the 6th verse of David (Psalms 3:6)

“I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side.”

You know, brothers and sisters, when we take our stance, when we declare to the world that we have faith, that we are proud of our religion -- when we do that, when we stand strong, when we stand up for our minority rights, then we can expect that there will be majority groups that will persecute us. In fact, this is something that we have to expect as a community. We have to expect that there will be narrow minded people that will persecute us because we are proud of who we are.

But we must remember, brothers and sisters, we have had a very long history with the evangelicals here in Korea. Brothers and sisters, we were persecuted many times by evangelicals. We were called heretics, Satan, Satan’s church, etc. etc. "Moonies, Moonies, antichrist!"...these kind of things, you know, and we were physically abused, too.

But we must remember this, brothers and sisters, that Christians, evangelical Christians, are not our enemies. This has to be clear, they are NOT our enemies; they are our brothers and sisters. The enemy is fear, the enemy is intolerance. The enemy is abuse of human rights, abuse of freedom of religion. It is not Christians. We have to be clear about this. We must not fear them as enemies. We must instead stand up against injustice and for human rights and tolerance for the religions.

Just as the Scriptures say, “I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side,” so we will not fear them because we believe and we have faith. We believe in the freedom of religion. We believe in our human rights, we believe that True Parents are the Messiah, that they are Lord. That it is part of our religion and our religious belief. We stand with the great human rights activists and the leaders of faith for the freedom of religion and democratic rights.

And I am particularly grateful to my many Buddhist brothers and sisters, my Buddhist friends, who stood up to protest for religious freedom when they were being misunderstood as a religion. As you remember, that happened about two years ago in Korea. They have set a precedent. Korea had to honor the democratic rights of a religion. All democracies must uphold these constitutional rights of all of their citizens regardless of creed, regardless of color, regardless of gender or religion. And it is for this reason, brothers and sisters, that we must remember that God is our shield. If we have faith, if we believe, if we are proud Unificationists, then God is our shield, God is our redemption. God will deliver us.

Let us see the last two verses of that song and I want to invite you to read these two verses with me. (Psalms 3:7)

“Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God”

(Psalms 3:8):

“From the Lord comes deliverance.”

And let’s say this last one together, I have to say it with you, come on, all of you…

“May your blessing be on your people.”

Aju

Meditation:

Let’s enter into our resurrected homeland practice. Let us close our eyes and let us now visualize ourselves not in this sanctuary -- let us visualize ourselves now walking in a beautiful meadow, a beautiful meadow that is lush and green. And as we listen to the verses of this song about the seven deaths and resurrections, about the eight-stage perfection, about the victory of True Parents and the victory of true love, that we are alive and we say thank you that we are alive, let us walk in this field.

This meadow used to be deserts which are now bubbling springs. The parched, dry lands are now wonderful refreshing streams and overflowing rivers. When we look to our left we notice a beautiful stream that is meandering down. We will notice that the stream has a vibrancy and a life that is so purifying and as we walk in this meadow we will notice that with each step that we take, that right around our feet beautiful flowers are blooming. We notice that this land is being resurrected with the power of true love. As we walk we will notice those incredible miracles. As we look up ahead we will see True Parents in those incredible beautiful holy robes and they stand waiting there for us. Let us walk towards them. Let us kneel before them, True Father with his right hand, True Mother with her left hand, place their hands atop our head and they anoint us and they bless us. They pray, “May you inherit the true love of God.” As we receive that blessing let us feel the energy that flows from the top of our head all the way down through our feet, almost like a wave of the Holy Spirit moving through us, resurrecting ourselves and resurrecting our body, and resurrecting our spirits and our hopes. As we breathe in deeply, in our hearts let us say, “I am alive,” and as we breathe out deeply, in our hearts let us say, “Thank you.”

Once again the second inhalation as we breathe in, in our hearts, “I am alive,” and as we breathe out, second exhalation, “Thank you.”

One more time, final inhalation as we breathe in, “I am alive,” and as we breathe out, final exhalation, “Thank You.” God and True Parents have blessed us with the blessed life that is to inherit the true love of God and to become greater blessings to our spouse, to our brothers and sisters, to our world and to God. Let us join our hands and manifest the Principle: give and receive action, four position foundation, coming together -- may I inherit the true love of God. Aju, Aju.

Altar Call:

Thank you, brothers and sisters. I want to invite you all to stand, and, brothers and sisters, we’re going to have time now for the Altar Call. This is the time for us to pray together as a community. We want to invite all the Japanese ministers to come up to the front. We want to pray for you, we want to pray for your ministries in Japan. Also, anybody else who feels called to prayer, who wants to pray for the brothers and sisters who are having so much difficulty or suffering, please come up to the front, where we want to join our hearts together as one heart and one community, one spirit. Please come, brothers and sisters. Nihon kara irashatta no shikutachi minnasama mae ni kite kudasai.( Would those members who are here from Japan, would all of you please come up to the front.)

Let us join our hearts in prayer, let’s pray; let us close our eyes and lift up our two hands towards the heavens and let us touch the face of God. Let us wipe away the tears of our brothers and sisters of True Parents and let us pray:

Heavenly Father, thank you so much. Father we thank you for this day that we can come together once again, that we have the freedom to live, to practice and worship you in this incredible world. Father, we thank you so much for the democratic world which was prepared by the American forefathers, guided by your hand. Father, we thank you so much, because democracy is truly freeing people, allowing us to experience our faith without persecution. And we pray that those ideals may come to pass, that they may come true in all democratic countries.

Father, we pray for our brothers and sisters, particularly in Japan, who for 43 years have endured so much persecution, illegal kidnappings and crimes against human rights, because of their faith, and their religion. Father, we pray that you may console those hearts today. We want to pray for those persecutors, we want to pray like Jesus prayed, for those persecutors. We pray that they may have forgiveness and that they may repent of their ways. We pray that we may all be delivered into your hand and your love and we want to pray particularly for our brothers and sisters who have suffered these atrocities.

Father, we want to pray for those brothers and sisters who are the true heroes of our faith, who have endured intense suffering but still hold strong with love, with conviction and with faith. Father, we thank you so much for them, because without them we would be so unable to see how blessed we can be. We pray for them today, we pray that you have your hand with them today, and that you may protect them today. We pray that Unificationists all around the world may be proud of their faith; that we may understand our right to practice our religion, our right to be proud of our faith, proud of True Parents; that we may understand our right to declare that they are the Lord, that they are the Messiah.

Father, we thank you so much, and we want to come together as a community, we want to offer grace to you and offer thanks. We want to ask you to come down and be in our lives, Father, to give us courage and strength to stand up in the face of persecution with peace, to stand up in the face of injustice with truth and stand up in the face of hatred with true love. Thank you so much. We pray, Father, that you may be with us today and as we move forward. Please guide us and give us your spirit. Thank you so much. We pray all these things in our own names, as Blessed Central families we pray. Aju, Aju.

An Interview of Hyung Jin Moon by BBC World Service

September 24, 2009

HyungJinMoon-090924.jpeg

Our church media advisor Richard Biddlecombe contacted our office in Korea late in August to say that a BBC World Service representative (who was already in contact with the movement in London) was coming to Korea from the United Kingdom for a conference, and that while he was here he would like to interview members of our church, including, if possible, its international president. This was duly arranged.

What is the distinctive contribution to the religious landscape made by the Unification Church? What sets you apart?

This was the first question Christopher Landau, religious affairs correspondent of the BBC World Service, asked Hyung-jin nim during a September 24 interview in Hyung-jin nim's office, which is annexed to the Headquarters Church in Seoul. Hyung-jin nim answered by saying:

We define God's essence as true love, the love that God intended his children to inherit.... In other traditions it is often said that God is unexplainable or beyond comprehension. For us, God is powerful and mighty but He is also a parent who is within reach.

Rev. Moon defines the essence of God as true love and further defines true love as a selfless type of love that can win over the worst evil. We are called to try to perfect, to move closer to inheriting, that type of love. And that really is our central teaching.

And what's the significance, in terms of the beliefs of the church, of your father himself?

We refer to Rev. and Mrs. Moon as the True Parents. In order to understand their mission, one would have to understand the mission of Jesus. And to understand the mission of Jesus, we believe one has to understand why God created human beings in the first place. And that is that God wanted to have beings with whom He could share His joy, His love, His essence.

Christopher Landau was in Seoul to attend the fifth ASEM Interfaith Dialogue, but he made time within that schedule to meet with Hyung-jin nim and some of our members.

Together Hyung-jin nim and Yeon-ah nim welcomed their guest warmly, then Hyung-jin nim boiled the water for Oolong tea, which he served in tiny, elegant cups. Yeon-ah nim was present, supporting, but had firmly decided this would be her husband's interview rather than a joint one.

As can be gleaned from the recent media coverage of the 10.14 True Parents' Cosmic Blessing Ceremony, many observers are curious about Hyung-jin nim's role and speculation on how extensive are the responsibilities that Father has delegated to his son has fueled recent media interest. So when Hyung-jin nim explained during the interview that Jesus had asked Rev. Moon to continue his [Jesus'] mission, Mr. Landau immediately asked, "And are you carrying on that work?" Hyung-jin nim's response was clear:

I am not in that messianic role; I'm absolutely not! That has to be 100 percent clear. Paul may have been an apostle, but he could never be the Christ. In the same way, I am just a conveyer, one who witnesses to the True Parents....

Even so, the BBC World web site suggested that Hyung-jin nim had "taken the reins" from his father, and the title of the web article came out as 'Moonies' mull future without founder. Some in our Unificationist community felt the BBC's use of the so-called "M" word was unfortunate. However, within hours, and for some hours, the story was the seventh most read on the (international) BBC News web site and Hyung-jin nim's photo made the home page. In a later contact by e-mail, Mr. Landau mentioned that he was sorry about the headline's inclusion of the "M" word but explained that it is the name we are most recognizable by in the UK. In other words, the BBC's editors had selected it in order to draw readers. Whether efforts should be made to prevent the term perpetuating itself in this way is an issue for discussion.

As a radio journalist, Mr. Landau was keen to include in the broadcast some sounds of day-to-day life at the Headquarters Church, to give a "sense of location" to listeners. And so Hyung-jin nim gave him a guided tour of the building. As they walked up the stairs into the main chapel, Mr. Landau asked Hyung-jin nim to describe the scene and recorded what he said. In his commentary Hyung-jin nim included an explanation of the meaning of the Unification Church symbol on the wall and the two chairs for True Parents.

Mr. Landau was even interested to record the sounds of the children playing in the children's playroom. The Two Rivers Choir were practicing for the weekend services, and they obliged him with a song.

But it was the sounds of their voices at our Saturday international service two days later (recorded on Hyung-jin nim's thirtieth birthday) that made it into the final cut. The four-minute radio piece that went out on "World Today," for example, featured a poignant narrative by Mr. Landau that indicated he had listened closely to Hyung-jin nim during the interview. For example:

Followers of the movement believe that Hyung-jin Moon's father was sent by God to complete the mission of Jesus Christ. He and his wife are regarded by Unificationists as the world's True Parents. Love between a married couple is seen as a divinely-ordained building block for society.

The piece also included brief inspirational excerpts from Hyung-jin nim's sermon and several extracts from his interview on subjects varying from our members' right to practice their faith to how couples become engaged. An excerpt from a brief interview Mr. Landau conducted with Franz and Elizabeth de Jong about how True Parents had matched them personally provided an interesting backdrop to Hyung-jin nim's explanation of the variety of approaches employed today.

Overall, Mr. Landau's radio piece and his article on the web gave a distinct and (of the church in Korea, at least) accurate impression of a forward-looking movement that is gearing up for growth under the management of a new generation. The radio broadcast concluded with Mr. Landau's observation:

As it looks to the future, this controversial movement, founded on reverence for the family, is facing another set of challenges as key responsibilities pass from father to son.

In the taxi from his hotel to the Headquarters Church on the day of the interview, I lightheartedly asked Mr. Landau if he often got into vehicles taking him to unknown locations He replied that doing so was indeed part of his work and yes, it required a certain amount of trust! His willingness to confront the unknown was matched by his open-heartedness and inquisitiveness. Hyung-jin nim wrote to him afterward that it had been a "true delight" to meet him.

Media reports in the past have often seeded, or added to, people's misunderstanding of True Parents and our movement, using dehumanizing descriptions that perpetuate mistrust or fear. In this instance, however, the encounter between one youthful journalist of religion and our (also youthful) international president resulted in a report that gave our church a very human face and voice.

Media representatives who ask us to explain our beliefs, ethics and activities in our own words, and then present them without bias, help a truthful picture of our church to emerge. Christopher Landau did not bias his report in our favor, and he never expressed a word to us on what he thought of our Saturday service and all that Hyung-jin nim said (except to say that Hyung-jin nim had given him some very radio-presentable content). But he did convey Hyung-jin nim's words honestly; perhaps even more telling, his own narrative was based on what he had learned through the interviews he conducted, not on archived content he had not personally researched.

Notably, this approach continued in the worldwide media coverage of the October 14 Blessing Ceremony, in which participating members were either quoted in the press or appeared on video. Are the conditions ripening for change? Certainly, Hyung-jin nim and Kook-jin nim believe that speaking candidly and openly to the media about our movement's vision and practices is the best way to earn honest and respectful coverage. And they are taking the lead in doing this.

Speech of Encouragement to the Filipino Women's Association

Hyung Jin Moon
September 23, 2009
From PBMK Newsletter

I remember it was August of 2007: I had only shortly before begun my ministry at Mapo Church when I was asked by our Church's Family Department to give a Divine Principle lecture in English, as part of the program to minister for and educate members from English-speaking countries, especially Korean-Filipino blessed couples.

My first official meeting with the wives of Korean-Filipino couples was on August 11th, Saturday, at that Divine Principle lecture session. I gave Divine Principle lectures for English-speaking members for four months until November, and some Filipino women members even came all the way from Choongcheong Province and Gangwon Province with their children to listen to those lectures. I will always remember with gratitude the devotion shown by such members.

Members of the Filipino Women's Association!

You have learned the teachings of the Divine Principle and avowed True Parents as the Messiah and Savior. As Unification Church members, you have been matched with Korean spouses following the ideal of the Blessing of inter-cultural and inter-racial marriage as True Parents have taught, and you have formed families and begun a new life in a foreign land.

The combined challenges, big and small -- such as communication problems, cultural differences, and the forming of family relationships, and more difficult still, the severe cold weather of Korean winter -- must have been a source of real suffering that affected you more than any simple cultural difference ever could have.

I can very well understand that, in Korean society, which rather lacks broad-mindedness and political consideration for multi-cultural families, you must have experienced considerable pain as you kept true to your faith and educated your children as Unification Church members. However, a multi-cultural family raised through the international Blessing is a historic accomplishment, embracing Heaven's dream, headed toward world peace and a new lineage.

On page 263 in the eightieth volume of True Father's sermons is recorded the words of True Father gave under the title, "International marriage is the fastest way to unite the all humanity as one" and I will quote a part of it:

"In this historic time, a white person and a black person brought together in union through marriage are people who have done great service for humanity and God's will and in making the world one.... I know of your pain. I know what anguish you go through, but when you think of marriage as an indemnity offering, you will receive more blessings from Heaven than anyone else, and through your descendants many leaders who can lead the world will be born.

Then what kind of people will become American presidents in the future? Many of the presidents will be those of mixed descent, born of black and white parents. This is the conclusion we can reach."

International marriage, bringing together couples as one, transcending national boundaries, religion, nationality and race, will become the cornerstone of world peace and harmony. These words True Father spoke in Chicago in 1975 came true decades later in President Obama, who was born from a [black] African father born in Kenya, and a [white] American mother.

This is not only the blessing bestowed on international marriages of black and white couples, but the promise of Heaven given to all international marriages. This is because the international Blessing is the fastest way to break down the walls created by the Fall, liberate and free God and True Parents, and unite humanity as one.

Being multi-cultural can have competitive power in the new era. Korean-Filipino couples are ambassadors for peace for the co-prosperity, and for the establishment and improvement of friendly ties between Korea and the Philippines, and they will act as bridges connecting the two nations, both culturally and in heart. As your children grow up, they will learn both languages. That means their lives will become that much broader. Moreover, they will not make "distinctions" based on differences between people, but instead will naturally learn that there is "another way of life." On such a rich cultural foundation, I believe your children will grow up to become leaders of a new generation.

Members of the Filipino Women's Association!

I know well that you are playing a pivotal role in the women's association of the 9th Region world members' service. I have heard that you are actively participating in Saturday services and other church meetings such as the Tuesday and Thursday evening meetings and Saturday Divine Principle lectures, as well as the birthday parties and multi-cultural families' meetings held every month on Saturday for world members' service attendees.

Moreover, you don't know how delighted and thankful I felt when I received the report that you were doing your utmost to connect those Filipino members who had become estranged from the Church back to a life of faith and churchgoing, through home visits and regional Hoon Dok Hae meetings, together with Rev. Michael Brazil and chairpersons of the Women's Association of the world members' service.

I recall that in various events the Philippines Embassy hosted for improving friendly relations between Korea and the Philippines -- such as the Philippines independence celebration in 2008 and the 60th anniversary celebration of amity between the two nations in 2009 -- second generation children of Korean-Filipino families were invited to perform (through the Filipino blessed wives society). This has served as an opportunity to make it known worldwide what warm and proud fruits have been harvested through the international Blessing Ceremonies True Parents have officiated.

In addition, I have also heard that the Filipino Women's Association is in unity with the vision of the Cheon Bok Gung Providence, that you have determined to make an offering of 300 million Won (about $25,000.00) toward its construction, and that you are encouraging all families to participate. Having heard the report that most of the members of the Association are in difficult situations financially, I could fathom that the Filipino Women's Association is focusing on the dream for the future that is to come true through the joint efforts of the Church community, rather than on the difficulties of the present; and that you are marching forward with a firm conviction in your faith and in your hearts.

The Unification Church, which has inherited the true love of the seven deaths and resurrections and the heart of True Parents, is growing and developing day after day together with the Cheon Bok Gung providence. Our Church community will grow and flourish amid the blessings of God and True Parents. The will of Heaven will be fulfilled.

I hope that, in the process of carrying this out, the Filipino Women's Association will contribute toward the development of the Church by manifesting their wisdom and the warmth of their hearts in practice.

May the blessings of God and True Parents be with you and your families.

Headquarters Church, Seoul Korea

Opening Prayer by Anne Inoue:

Good morning Heavenly Father. We are so blessed and grateful to be here this morning. You have given this opportunity for us to get together once during our week, to share our hearts with You, our struggles and our joys of the past week; to meditate on our lives, and to have a chance to receive from You some inspiration and guidance that will help us through the upcoming week.

We pray that You can be with each one of us during this time, that our hearts can be opened to You, that we also receive love from the brothers and sisters next to us, that we can really support each other as a community and make a source of power that will really let You work here in Seoul, in Korea.

We also pray that You can really reach out through our speakers today. Help us to understand once again Your heart, our True Parents’ heart, Hyung Jin Nim’s and Yeon Ah Nim’s hearts, so that our hearts can become like that too.

We offer this time to You in the name of our brothers and sisters from all around the world. Aju!

Welcoming Remarks:
Yeon Ah Nim

Good afternoon brothers and sisters! (Good afternoon!)

It is really great to see you all again. Today we have a beautiful day to worship Heavenly Father and True Parents. Today we sincerely hope and desire that you and your family will be blessed in the name of Heavenly Father and True Parents.

Welcome brothers and welcome sisters. Aju!

Hyung Jin Nim

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters! Good to see you all. Let’s start by manifesting the Principle: (using hands) give and receive action, four position foundation, coming together. May I inherit the true love of God. Aju!

Today we’re going to look at Cheon Seong Gyeong pages 640 and 641. Father speaks. He says:

“What is the one thing to be done in the world of humanity? The light of love must be bright. For that to happen, you must catch fire internally and externally. From what? (From) the motive force to love. Therefore, do not be intimidated even if you are insulted. Take it and move on with dignity.”

I love that! Can we get an “Aju”? (Aju!) I love that!

You know this week we’ve been doing a little street witnessing. We went out introducing ourselves as the international president couple of the Unification Church. It was good, sharing our faith and talking to the wonderful people that we were able to meet. There are some people that we met who said, “Oh! No interest! Bye-bye,” like that. But you should not get insulted. Just like Father says, “Do not be intimidated.” He says, “Don’t be insulted. Even if you are insulted, take it and move on with dignity.”

Yesterday we were out in the park, handing out the brochures and flyers about the Unification Church. On it we declare confidently that True Parents are Messiah, they are the Lord and Savior. We declare it very strongly, and people receive it. It’s amazing because about 80-90% of the people receive it. Totally different scenario now!

So, really it is up to us and our confidence now. The outside world is ready. It’s so amazing because yesterday when we started the first lady I approached was sitting on a bench. I approached her and I said, “I am from the Unification Church. My father has just written his autobiography. It is the seventh best seller in the nation. Here is some information about our services.” And she just said, “No, I don’t want to hear it!” Then I said, “Have a great day Miss,” and we just left, moving on to the next person. It was amazing because during that time we could have gotten really discouraged. It started out not so good.

This was the second time we went out during the week. But then we met a couple of other people. One elderly man started encouraging us tremendously, saying, “Hey! Rev Moon is amazing! He is amazing! He’s better than all the churches!” Let’s give it up! Come on -- let’s give it up for the Unification Church! (Applause) He said that and we were very encouraged that day.

Brothers and sisters, it is time. It is time! It’s time for us to be proud of who we are, proud of our identity, and to share it with confidence and pride.

Words after meditation:

God and True Parents have blessed us with the blessed life, and that is to inherit the true love of God, the parental heart; to be able to bring better and greater blessings to our spouse, our family, nation, world, cosmos, and to God. Let us all join our hands and once again manifest the Principle: give and receive action, four position foundation lifted up, bring our hands together. Say, “May I inherit the true love of God. Aju!”

Interesting Story:

We always like to start with something a little interesting. Do you like my English accent today? (Laughter) That’s a New York accent, by the way.

I heard a little story. Adam was having a conversation with God, and Adam said to God, “God, why did you make the woman so beautiful?” God said, “Well, so that you would love her.” And he asked God, “God, why did you make woman so irrational?” God answered, “So that she would love a fool like you.” (Laughter)

Main Sermon

Today brothers and sisters I’d like to talk to you about “Walking the Way.” Does that sound very mysterious?

Let’s start with Judeo-Christianity, Isaiah 42:6. Let’s read this together:

“I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, as a light to the nation.”

Can anybody say Amen? Aju!

Let’s see Buddhism today. This is Dhammapada 76-77. Let’s read that together:

“Should one see a wise man, who, like a revealer of treasure, points out faults and reproves, let one associate with such a wise person.”

Hinduism, this is the Katha Upanishad 1:3:14.

Let’s read this together: “Arise! Awake! Like the sharp edge of a razor is that path, hard to tread and difficult to cross.”

Let’s look at True Parents words. This is Divine Principle, Predestination Chapter 3-4. Let’s look at this:

“God, being omniscient, foreknows who has the qualifications necessary to become a central figure in the providence of restoration. God predestines those whom He foreknows; then He calls upon him to fulfill the purpose of the providence. Calling the person is God’s responsibility, but that alone does not entitle the person to be justified before God and given glory. Only when the person completes his responsibility after being called by God is he justified and then glorified.”

Aju! I love that. Beautiful!

Brothers and sisters, you know there come times in our history where we have to face very pressing challenges. There come times in the community where we have to address serious realities which are happening to our Unification Movement.

There always come times during our life of faith, where we have to even understand and really try to empathize with the suffering of others -- particularly within our worldwide community. That helps us become more righteous and more God-like, not in an arrogant way but in a truly selfless way.

Two weeks ago when we were in America and Father requested that we do the American tour, Kook Jin Hyung was here. He shared with you some of the realities of what is happening in Japan with our community there. There in Japan are tens of thousands of brothers and sisters, Unificationists. And I’m sure some of you have heard that it is important for us to understand their situation from a real heartistic perspective. Just this past week, on Thursday actually, we were at a meeting of the association of those who have been abducted illegally against their will in a free democratic country, particularly in Japan. We had this association opening meeting on Thursday, where we understood the severity of this issue.

This is not a minor issue, brothers and sisters. This is a major human rights violation in a democratic country. The fundamental and most core aspect of a democracy is the freedom of religion. It’s the freedom of faith, to be able to believe in the religion of our choice as citizens of a democratic nation. This has been forcibly taken away from over 5,000 brothers and sisters in Japan. Those of us who live in very privileged nations will not even realize how severe that is. We will not understand what kind of severity is happening in terms of religious persecution to our brothers and sisters.

We were at this opening ceremony and I heard the presentations. Kook Jin Hyung was there speaking and I just could not stop weeping the whole time. I was like a little baby. I needed boxes and boxes of Kleenex. It’s so grievous and outrageous what has been allowed to happen to the citizens of a major super power -- a democratic nation -- based on religious persecution.

So this is something that’s very real to our community, brothers and sisters. We may not feel it in places like America or different countries, but we have to understand this. When the German forces were exterminating Jews in World War II, it was not simply a German problem, not simply a Jewish problem.. That was not simply a German-Jewish problem -- that was a worldwide problem. So as a world community, it is very important that we understand that this issue is not the violation of human rights only in Japan, but this violates the very fundamental right of us as Unificationists, the right to believe that True Parents are the Messiah and the Lord and Savior. Aju!

The issue is our freedom of religion in a democratic society. Nobody can take that away from us in a democratic state, nobody. But in many cases that freedom has been systematically stripped from citizens of that nation. This is outrageous.

So I want to warn you that this is a very serious topic and it’s not for the faint of heart. This is a case of huge persecution. What you hear today are things that are very shocking if you were not here two weeks ago. But these are not made up stories; we are talking about real families and real brothers and sisters. So please, understand that.

We are going to focus on some Scriptures today. All week this has just been totally eating at my heart. So when I was preparing the service, I found some of these words of Jesus. This is from Mathew 7:13. Let’s read that together:

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.”

Christ encourages His disciples to enter through the narrow gate. Notice, that it’s a narrow gate, it’s a very narrow gate, a small gate. But also notice that it’s a narrow WAY. Many people forget that. We want to notice that it is not just a narrow gate that we pass through, it’s a narrow PATH. Remember just like in the Katha Upanishad that we saw in Hinduism, it’s like walking the path that is difficult to tread; just like walking on the edge of a razor. Even in Hinduism we see that.

Narrow is the gate; it’s small. In order to get through, we have to be small, have to be thin, so to speak. You know what I mean. We can’t be centered on big ego or have self-centeredness. That makes us big, that makes us bloated. But we have to walk through that narrow gate. When our brothers and sisters found the truth they chose to leave the broad road, to walk through the narrow gate. They found the Messiah, they found the one who was foretold in the Scriptures; and we walked a bitter, bitter road as a community.

Just on this street that you have all walked up to come to the church, if you were going to the Unification Church in the 1960's and people knew about it, you would be persecuted. Even physically you could be assaulted. Brothers and sisters were stoned. We had brothers and sisters whose apartment and houses, like the windows, were shattered -- just because of the fact of attending that building, where Father ministered first.

So there were Christians at that time, who saw us as heretical and they created stirs. They told parents that their children were being brainwashed, and that they had to deprogram them; that their children are being stolen, etc. Those who found the true way and were walking with the returning Lord just like the Apostles of Jesus, they were persecuted. Our communities were persecuted. Often I think that our younger generations forget this. We really were persecuted very heavily.

The question is: How can you believe that the returning Lord comes to Korea? It’s totally insane! But is it REALLY that insane, if you think about it? I mean, is it really that far fetched? If so, then it is at least AS far fetched as the belief that the Living God -- the Creator of all the universe, and all the stars and all the rocks and all the elements of the entire universe -- was walking around as a Middle Eastern man 2,000 years ago in the desert. We don’t believe that Jesus was the Living God. We don’t believe that he was God. We believe he was the Son of God, that he was a human being, who was to inherit the essence of God, the true love of God.

Actually one could argue that our belief is less far fetched than the belief that Jesus is the Living God, the Creator of the entire universe, a belief that over one billion people profess in this day and age. So is it really that we’re so crazy? Is it really that our theology or what we believe is so out of the ordinary or so radical? Or is it that there is a bias and there is a targeted persecution?

In this situation, I’d like to draw your attention now to the second Scripture. This is Matthew 7:15, 21-23. I want to read this together because this is very intense. This is very, very intense. Remember this is from the Christian Bible; this is very intense. Listen to what Jesus said. Let’s read it together:

“Watch out for false prophets... Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord', will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven...”

Notice -- I want to bring to your attention -- “Lord, Lord.” Not just once. “Lord, Lord.” That means that their whole life time they could have been professing Jesus, prayed in Jesus’ name, repented their sins in Jesus’ name, "I pray in Jesus’ name, I bless you in Jesus’ name. Lord, Lord, Lord" -- but: “Not all who say Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven.” This is actually very contrary to what many Christians believe.

Okay, let’s continue:

“... Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Go away from me you evildoers.’”

This is the word of Jesus as seen in the Christian Bible.

I bring attention to this because in Japan we have been systematically persecuted for the last forty years. Since 1966, anti-Unificationist Christian ministers -- who were not that many in Japan, the Christian community is very small in Japan -- but certain anti-Unificationist Christian ministers and communist educators, and a group of lawyers who are partnering with them, have created an illegal, criminal organization to illegally kidnap Unificationists. These are some of the people. (Photos shown on the big screen) These are some of the ministers and de-programmers, so to speak. They have created an illegal criminal organization, illegally kidnapping Unificationists. Illegally kidnapping them, torturing them and forcing them to agree to THEIR teachings, holding them against their will, in a democratic country. This is the second most powerful economic country in the world!

This organization makes tens of thousands of dollars per kidnap victim who is de-programmed -- anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 per person, per head. So it is an illegal business; and it is organized and systematic. We have up to 5,000 cases of Unificationists that have been kidnapped -- 5,000 brothers and sisters... 5,000 people! When North Korea kidnaps ONE person, a Japanese person, that’s all over the news -- all over the news in Japan, in Korea, everywhere. But 5,000 citizens of the nation of Japan are illegally kidnapped against their will, and not ONE media article about it! Not ONE!

For the last forty-three years the severity of these cases is such an outrage, from kidnappings that happened from the duration of a week to a month, and in Goto-san’s case, twelve years and five months. Twelve years and five months! He was kidnapped. He was forced to live in an apartment. He was starved. Twelve years! He went in when he was in his late twenties, and he came out at forty-one. This is our brother! This is in the nation of Japan! This is outrageous! (Pointing to photos on screen) He was starved, look at him -- he is 182 cm, that’s about six feet one. He was thirty nine kilos when he left, when he escaped after twelve years. That’s like seventy pounds. He was totally starved. This is a human rights violation. This is violation of the freedom of religion, the fundamental core of a democratic state.

In another case we have a sister who was kidnapped and she was systematically raped for three months... three months... everyday... because they knew about the Fall. They understood the Principle. And so in order to break her marriage, and to defile her so vehemently, they organized systematic rape of that sister. This is real. This is our daughter, our sister. The father who paid those people to do that, who paid the de-programmers, the illegal criminals, to do that -- he found out about what happened to his daughter, and he committed suicide because he was so guilt-ridden at what he had done to his own daughter.

We have other sisters that had taken their lives in the apartments while this was happening to them. This is in a democratic nation which professes freedom of religion! This is outrageous, brothers and sisters! It’s absolutely an egregious violation of human rights, of fundamental democratic minority rights… human rights. This has happened systematically to our 5,000 brothers and sisters.

I was talking to some Japanese sisters who this happened to. They told me they cannot return to Japan. They can’t. If they go to Japan, they know... they live with the fear. They are returning to the second most powerful democratic nation in the world. That’s really, very wild, if you think about it. It seems so unreal. They’re returning to one of the "safest" places in the world. This is not a war-torn area, as you know; this is not a third world country. And they cannot return. If they return, it is with fear that they will be kidnapped.

We had one sister who testified just Thursday that her Korean husband came and had to forcibly rescue her. Thank God, Korean husbands do something right sometimes! (Laughter) You know... my God... it’s outrageous! I saw this quotation in Matthew... let’s put the Scripture back on. Matthew 7:15, 21-23: “Watch out for false prophets…..Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord”, will enter the kingdom of heaven but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name -- did we not kidnap in Your name? -- and in your name drive out demons -- did we not persecute in Your name? .... Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you, go away from me, you evildoers.’” If there is something truly evil in this world - and there ARE forces of evil -- then this violation towards Unificationists is a serious evil indeed.

So we will do something about it. We will absolutely work. We are taking class action law suit against these criminals. We are bringing this to the attention of the media. We are organizing this not only in the United States, but also in Korea, and also in Japan. We will be suing them. We will be working with the law. We won’t be irrational.

I am so grateful to Kook Jin hyung’s leadership here. For the first time, in forty three years, finally we have a leader who is stepping up to protect these people who have been violated, stepping up to bring justice to them and to stop pushing them under the rug. (Applause) Let’s give him a big round of applause. (Applause) I love what he said.

(Pointing to the big screen) This is Rev. Walter E. Fauntroy. He was working with Martin Luther King; he will be working with us. There are also other individuals. We will be appealing to the UN Councils. We will be appealing to the Korean Government and the Department of Human Rights. We will be appealing to the Japanese Embassy here and all over the world. We’ll be appealing to, of course, the Japanese Government. This is serious. We’re not going to let this pass. This is a major atrocity, and religious persecution.

People say, “A real family, a true family, a family that is real -- sticks together not only in the times of celebration, of goodness and feast, but a family stays together in times of trouble.” A family stands together, protects one another, and defends one another. This is what we are called to do, brothers and sisters. This time we have to stand up for one another. When the faith of our brothers and sisters in a different country is attacked and violated in such an egregious level in a democratic state, we have to rise up because that directly threatens our own democratic human rights in the other countries that we live in. This is very much a pressing issue.

In the Acts of the Apostles we meet Saul. He is a Pharisee and he is involved in the stoning of Stephen. Stephen is one of the seven Deacons elected by the Twelve Apostles after Christ had passed. He was stoned for his belief in Christ. There was a man named Saul who was stoning Stephen. He was laughing and saying, “Good, good, more, more.” The Bible says that Saul went around and persecuted the Churches in Jerusalem; he persecuted the believers of Christ. He taxed them, he encouraged terrorism against them.

But then, all of sudden, one day, Jesus comes to him in a vision and said, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Saul asked, “Who are you?” And Jesus said, “I am the Lord. I am the one whom you persecute.” Then Jesus took away Saul’s eye sight. For three days Saul couldn’t see. He was blind. Jesus then appeared to Ananias and told Ananias to go and find this man Saul on the streets in Jerusalem. “Go and find him and pray over him, and I will heal him of his blindness.”

So Ananias goes, finds Saul and says, “The Lord came to me in a vision and told me to meet you here. May I pray for you?” And he prays for that person, Saul, Saul of Tarsus. He prays over that person Saul, and Saul’s eyesight was renewed; he was able to see again. It’s in the Scriptures.

Do you know who that person Saul was? That Saul becomes the Apostle Paul. He becomes the greatest proselytizer of Christianity, of early Christianity. He was a terrorist against Christians, was somebody who persecuted Churches and destroyed believers and encouraged stoning. This man became one of the most successful witnessers of Christ. He created communities in Colossia, Athenians, Rome and all around Syria, all around the Mediterranean. He reached out to the Gentiles in particular. This opened up the way for Christianity to go to the world.

But notice that Paul, this man who was Saul before, if he was not chastised by Jesus, if Jesus didn’t come and take away his eyesight, if he wasn’t chastised, he would probably have persecuted Christians until his death. But Jesus knew that in order to use this person’s gift, his true gift, he had to be able to see with renewed eyes, renewed spiritual eyes. Jesus punished him, and based on that punishment he opened his spiritual eyes.

It is the same for these anti-Unificationist ministers and lawyers that have operated this criminal organization. That is not the purpose of their lives. But God has a purpose for them just like Saul. You see, for their benefit, for their sake, so that their eyes may be renewed, it is important that they are brought to justice and be shown what damage they have done to people in their own country. They have prayed in the name of Jesus, they have prayed in the name of the Lord; and yet, systematically they have abducted and tortured and gone against the very heart of Christ.

I believe that when these people are brought to justice... and Kook Jin hyung is so cool. He was at the association for the victims of the abductions, and he said, “We will bring them to justice!” His name is Justin, by the way. “We will bring them to justice and we will put them in prison!” That’s what he said. Let’s give it up to God. Come on, let’s give it up. (Applause) They will be put behind bars because what they do is criminal.

Let’s take a look at Mathew 7: 24-27, and let’s read this together:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Brothers and sisters, it’s so important to defend our faith and to rebuild our faith. It’s so important that we rebuild it and renew it on the rock that Jesus talks about -- the rock of our salvation, the rock which is stable and steady. The fundamental human right of freedom of religion is being attacked, and that is a violation of human rights, according to the UN Council.

What is being attacked on a more fundamental level is the Unification faith. We are under attack, our faith is under attack. It is important that we have faith, a strong faith that is built on the rock which in spite of rain and persecution does not fall. Even when the streams rise, even when the winds blow and beat against that house, it does not fall. It is important that we strengthen our faith. This is what we do when we are standing strong for those brothers and sisters in Japan. We are declaring our faith to the government, we are declaring our faith when we go witnessing. We are doing that on purpose because we are saying that we have the right to believe what we believe, and our believe is not really as far fetched as people may think.

When we go out to witness, as I shared with you, we are saying on our pamphlet, right on the pamphlet of the Unification Church, that we believe that True Parents are the Lord and Savior. We put it right up there. No more hiding our faith. We are very upfront with our faith because it is being attacked and we are being persecuted. So we will take actions against this criminal organization.

Brothers and sisters, this is so important.

“What can I do?” The question is, “What can I do?” What can you all do to defend the faith, to defend our belief, to defend our human rights, to defend our brothers and sisters who have been violated? What can you do? We can witness! We can share our faith. This is what we can do. We can share our faith and we can share the fact that we have been persecuted, we can share that we’ve been persecuted because of religion, which is illegal in a democratic society. Actually we Unificationists are proponents of democracy. We believe that our democratic right of freedom of faith is central to the freedom of a nation. Sharing this is what we can do.

You see, even in Japan we’re witnessing at this time, telling straight up who we are, who we are, maintaining our faith and being clear about our faith. This is very important, brothers and sisters. No longer can we hide behind different names, because while we do that, our brothers and sisters are being kidnapped and persecuted. Only if we stand strong with our faith and show that it is our right in a democratic nation to believe and choose our religion, and only if we stand up for those who’ve been persecuted, only if we do that, will this type of illegal kidnapping and abduction stop. Only then will those perpetrators be brought to justice. Only then will our families finally truly have peace in their hearts. So many of our brothers and sisters in Japan are connected to all of your communities, wherever you may have come from.

So this is a serious thing to us, brothers and sisters, and we really need all of you to be family members. Don’t just be observers. Be family members who stand up for your brothers and sisters, not taking the easy and broad road but the narrow path that is sometimes hard to do. But we have to do it because we have to stand up for each other, stand up for our belief. Only then we will be heard; only then will our rights be given to us and be protected.

Brothers and sisters, it is truly my prayer that on this day we can remember this most precious path that we are on. I will stand up for it, too. I will stand up. We’re doing it every time we go out witnessing in public, we’re doing it. So we ask you and implore you also to stand up and join us in standing up for our faith. Not through any immature means, but always through legal means; always through mature rights-based means; and never with arrogance, but always with humility and confidence. It is our hope that all of you will join all the activities that will come up in the future and that we will bring more and more light, more and more awareness and more and more sensitivity to the plight of Unificationists and to what they had to endure based on their faith.

If you receive this, brothers and sisters, let’s give a resounding applause to God and True Parents and to all our brothers and sisters around the world as our Unification community. Come on, let’s give it up for all of them. (Applause) We love you guys. We’re standing up for all of you. We’re going to stand up. Let’s bow our heads and enter into our final meditation and prayer.

Let us close our eyes and lift our hands up! Let’s touch the face of God! Let’s wipe away the tears of True Parents! Let us pray!

Hyung Jin Nim’s Altar Call:

Heavenly Father,

Thank you so much for this day, Father. We are in Your presence, and Father, we want to recognize today that a family is not only together and stands together in times of feast and good times; but Father, a true family learns how to stick together and stand for one another and defend one another in times of crisis, in times of persecution. Father, we pray that today we may mature to that level.

Father, call in us the heart that is not only centered on our own need. Father, let us expand to the needs of those who have suffered so much for us. Father, our Japanese movement has sacrificed and has held the entire financial responsibility to fund every church in America, every church in Korea, every church in Lithuania, every church in Africa. They have shouldered that burden for the last 30 years. They have paid for our church buildings; they have paid for our ceremonies and our events. And Father, we are indebted. They have sacrificed the most, and they are our saints.

Father, we may feel that we have done a lot; but You know how much Your Japanese sons and daughters have suffered! Those who truly know, do know how much they have suffered for the sake of all our communities around the world. Father, we want to pray for them today and particularly for those who have been illegally abducted, Father, in a democratic state, against their will. Father, they have been not only persecuted but tortured, and imprisoned! Some of our sisters, Father -- we don’t even want to repeat what happened to them! Father, these grave misdoings and sins are against Your people, Father!

We pray for Your forgiveness because, Father, this is truly, truly painful for You to see. Father, we want to be here together for them; we want to pray for them today. And we don’t want to just pray -- we want to step out in action, for it is said in the Scripture that he who hears the words and puts them into practice is the one who builds a house on a rock. Let us hear these words, Father. Let us put into practice our faith. Let us share it and declare it, so that nobody can take it away from us or from our brothers and sisters in Japan, or in Africa or in Russia or anywhere else.

Father, let us protect our faith; it is time for us to stand up for one another. Father, we want to do that. We are mature, we are adults, Father. Father, we know that we want to stand up for them, and give us the courage to do so, to stand up. Father, we pray that You may encourage the brothers and sisters from Japan who see this service. We pray that they may be encouraged today. Encourage them. They truly need it. We love them so much. We love You. We are pouring our hearts out to You, and we thank You. Father, we thank You once again for being with us at this time, and we will do our 5%. Thank You so much.

We pray all these things in our names as central blessed families and proud Unificationists. We pray this in the name of True Parents. Aju! Aju! Aju!

Living For The Lord

Hyung Jin Moon
September 12, 2009
Headquarters Church, Seoul, Korea

Welcoming Remarks
Yeon Ah Nim:

Good Afternoon brothers and sisters. It is really great to be back and see all of you in the Sanctuary. As you know we were in America last week and we met a lot of wonderful American members. We are especially grateful for In Jin Nim’s leadership there. We also had the opportunity to participate in the Lovin’ Life Ministry as well. We sincerely hope and desire that today through the service we can return glory to our Heavenly Father and True Parents and bring joy to them as well. Welcome brothers and welcome sisters.

Hyung Jin Nim:

Welcome brothers and sisters. It is good to see you. It has been quite a while... Oh my goodness! We are going to read from Peace Messages now. Father says,

“God created this world in order to feel joy from seeing humankind and all things of creation become one through His love, forming a harmonious and peaceful world of love. On such a basis human beings were meant to form true conjugal relationships centering upon His love and to establish families, tribes, peoples, nations and a world of true love. God created this world to participate directly in this process and to feel the joyfulness.”

Brothers and sisters, in our daily life, in our own practice, when we are working day to day, these things seem like small things, but these are the very things that affect our families, our tribes, our nations. So True Father is encouraging us today to follow true love. He is encouraging us today to remember that the most central virtue is to be able to center our lives on true love. Let us give True Parents a round of applause. Let’s give it up for God and True Parents.

Brothers and sisters we want to welcome you all to the service, and let us really participate in the service today. We want to sing together, we want to pray together, we want to offer grace together. We want to meditate together, reflect together, and if we do that, I do believe that we will find more victory in our new week. God will prepare new things, new openings, new people that will help us on the way.

God and True Parents blessed us with the blessed life and through this life they wish for us to inherit the true love of God, to become greater blessings to our spouse, our children, our families, our cities, our neighborhoods, our nations, to the world and to God. Let us join our hands together once more and manifest the Principle: give and receive action, the four position foundation lifted up. All coming together centering on the true love of God. Aju!

Interesting Story:

We always like to start with something a little interesting. I heard a story about Little Johnny and he was standing in front of the church and it was Veterans’ Day. He was looking at this huge list of names in front of the church. He was looking at that very perplexed. The pastor came over and asked, “Johnny are you OK? You look very confused.” Johnny asked, “Pastor, what is this list of names doing in front of the church?” The Pastor replied, “These are the brave young men and women who once served and who died in service to their nation and the Lord.” Little Johnny listened to that and was quite shocked. He looked at the Pastor and said, “Oh my goodness, did they die during the eight o’clock service or the ten o’clock service?”

Sermon by Hyung Jin Nim:

Brothers and sisters, I want to talk to you today about ‘Living for the Lord.’ Let us take a look at world scriptures. We are going to look at the notion of grace and gratitude in these scriptures. From Christianity (Ephesians 2: 8-10):

"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing. It is the gift of God -- not because of works, lest any man should boast."

Here Paul speaks about the importance of understanding the incredible grace of receiving salvation. Let us look at Buddhism today. This is from Japanese Buddhism (Shinran, Tannisho):

"We who are caught in the net of our own passions cannot free ourselves from bondage to birth to death, no matter what kind of austerities or good deeds we try to perform. Seeing this and pitying our condition, Amida made his Vow with the intention of bringing wicked men to Buddhahood."

Amida is a Buddha of light. He is a more salvific Buddha in this tradition.

Islam (Qur’an 49:7):

"God has endeared the Faith to you, and has made it beautiful in your hearts, and He has made hateful to you unbelief, wickedness, and rebellion. Such indeed are those who walk in righteousness -- a grace and favor from God."

Again we see that faith is not necessarily something we do. It is a gift, it is favor. Let us now read True Parents' words today. Unificationism -- True Parents (5:209-10):

"Although we believe that God is our Heavenly Father, we should strive for the day when Heavenly Father, our Subject Partner, trusts us, His object partners, one hundred percent...We should take God’s purpose as our clear goal, and dash forward to reach it with one hundred percent conviction. This is the last significant problem that people of this era have to solve... You know very well that the first human ancestors fell because they did not have faith. We should take God’s purpose as our clear goal, and dash forward to reach it with one hundred percent conviction."

After Father revealed to me the seven deaths and resurrections, something very interesting happened to me. When I look at the Bible now it feels completely new. It almost seems that before I couldn’t understand how the Biblical traditions, the ancient traditions, would actually fit in and be guided and be completed by our True Parents. I couldn’t feel it in my heart. After receiving the vision of the seven deaths and resurrections, something happened inside of me. When I look at the Biblical scriptures now there is so much incredible connection to what is happening in our movement, particularly at this time, when I was in America. I will talk about it a little later.

A theologian, who is our member and a graduate from Harvard said to me, "When you understand the seven deaths and resurrections, not only do you understand why True Parents inherited the parental heart -- greater love than even Christ inherited -- you understand the difference between Christ and True Parents. But at the same time you also see the continuity between Christ and True Parents. You understand that Christ was supposed to inherit this type of true love, the parental heart. But because of the failure of the people he was not able to do that. He did not become a parent. So not only do we understand the continuity, but we also understand the discontinuity, the difference. But we also understand the connection that we have with Jesus and his mission."

For me the Bible has become alive again! Very strange, very amazing! The Bible has become alive. In the second century there was a man by the name of Marcian (216-277 A.D). He had a large following around the Mediterranean area. He had created a scripture; it was actually the first Christian scripture so to speak. It was the first organized Christian scripture, the standardized version of scripture. The Marcian text has only the New Testament version. It excluded all the things that were connected to the Judaic law, all the things that were connected to the Old Testament. But it is very interesting that in the third and forth centuries, when the Catholic Church organized the Bible that we have today, they decided to incorporate the Hebrew Scriptures as well as part of the Old AND New Testament Bible. Remember, at that time they were just a young tradition as Christians, a couple of hundred-year-old tradition. But because they inherited the Old Testament and were able to be conversant with it as well, that history (christian history) became three thousand years old immediately.

It is the same with the Completed Testament. When we understand the incredible victory of the seven deaths and resurrections of True Parents -- and why that is the completion of Jesus’ mission and why through that grace we are able to pay off the indemnity conditions that allow us to enter into the eight stages of perfection -- then we understand that by using and including the Old and New Testaments we are not only a fifty year old tradition, but we are a five thousand year old tradition! Let’s give it up for Unification Church brothers and sisters. This is the providential picture that you get, when you understand how it is all connected. That is why today I am going to focus on Scripture like we did a couple of weeks ago.

I want to focus on three Scriptures today. They are in Matthew 10. But before that I want to give you a little background: Jesus is here. He is walking through the towns and synagogues preaching the good news of the Kingdom. He is healing sickness and disease. He has twelve disciples and he calls them to him and he tells them, “I give you the authority, I grant you the authority to drive out evil spirits and heal disease and sickness,” and he instructs them and tells them to go out with confidence, to believe and go out. He gives them a long exposition but I am going to focus on only a few of scriptures today. We will read the three of them together.

Matthew 10:22 -- "All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved."

Did you hear that? “Men will hate you because of me,” Jesus said to his disciples. He said, "You are going to be persecuted. You’d better expect it. You better expect that people will hate you and curse you because you are following me, because you are taking on the mantle of the Gospel." He is giving them that instruction. We will come back to that a little later. Let us read:

Matthew 10:24-25 -- "A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub how much more the members of his household!"

Matthew 10:32-33 -- "Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven."

Let us focus on the first scripture, Matthew 10:22 -- "All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved."

In the Acts of the Apostles we see, after the crucifixion, what the apostles are doing. We see in the end of the first chapter that Judas is replaced. He is replaced by Matthias. We see that because the congregation is growing and they are having difficulty with the distribution of food, the twelve disciples said, "We will now elect seven deacons to help with the distribution of food and certain other things so that we can focus on prayer and the preaching of the Gospel." They elected seven deacons.

In the election they elected Stephan whose name in Greek means ‘one who is crowned.’ He was selected as one of the deacons to help. Now Stephan is an incredible prophet. He does great miracles. The scriptures say he witnessed strongly. He is seized by the Sanhedrin. The Sanhedrin at the time is a council of judges. A council of twenty-three judges was present in each of the cities of the land of Israel. They were judges of the law. They judge if you were consistent with the laws of Moses or whether this or that person was being blasphemous. That was the Sanhedrin.

Stephan was seized by those who wish for him to stop preaching the Gospel. He is seized by the Sanhedrin and brought before them. In Acts 6:13 you see that they produce false witness against him. They say, "This fellow never stops speaking against this Holy Place (Temple) and against the law. For we have heard him say that Jesus -- whoever that is -- that Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us. They were saying that Jesus was going to destroy the Temple."

So Stephan testifies to Jesus. He has this extremely long testimony where he goes through all the different prophets of the Old Testament. He arrives at the mission of Christ and he says, "It was a Sanhedrin council just like you, that judges just like you, who betrayed and murdered the Son of God." "Murdered him," he says.

When he says this, in Acts 7:54, they are furious and gnash their teeth. At that moment Stephan looks up and sees a vision of Jesus. A vision of Jesus sitting at the right hand of God. He proclaims this and says, “I see the Lord at the right hand of God.” Now the people persecuting Stephan covered their ears and yell at the top of their voices. They rush at him, drag him out of the city and begin to stone him.

Until the end Stephan was faithful to Christ. In Acts 7:59-60 we see what is happening to Stephan while he is being stoned. Listen to this: While they are stoning him he prays, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Let us say this together. "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he fell on his knees. Imagine this. He is being stoned; he is being hit on the face and body. When you see pictures of Stephan you see three stones. One here, one here, and one here. He is portrayed as a Saint. He prays, “Lord receive my spirit. Lord, do not hold this sin against them. Lord, forgive them; they do not know what they do.” The scripture says that when he said this he "fell asleep".

He becomes the first Christian martyr. In the Catholic tradition he is a saint who stood up for his faith. Not only did he not deny Christ at his ending but he remained Christ-like. We can see the parallel between how he prayed and how Christ prayed at the end. When Christ was on the cross he said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” When Stefan was being stoned to death, because of his faith and conviction he said, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them,” and he prayed for his enemies according to Matt 5:44 that says, “Love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you.” He prays for his enemies even at the end, when he is being stoned. Think about that, how many of us could do that while being stoned?

When we were in America we were scheduled to come back within about two days. But Father all of a sudden said, “You go do a tour now around America.” I said, “Oh Father, we have to get back to Korea. We have a lot of work to do there. We have the 21,000 temple and we have to witness a lot and are very very busy.” Father said, “You do a tour now.” I said, “I have a plane ticket for today. It is very hard to change a ticket.” He said, “Do it NOW.”

Father told us why he wanted us to do the tour. Initially we did not know there would be a tour. He told me, "Go with your sister In Jin Ah (In Jin Nim), and show unity.” Father asked us to do two things on the tour. He asked us to do that not only in America but to teach this everywhere we go. That is why I am going to mention this now. So Father told us the two reasons why he wanted us to go around America and let the members be clear about this: Number one, we have to unite centered on True Parents at this time. That is essential. Theologically, Unificationism is nothing without True Parents, so we have to unify around True Parents, around the "rock" that we sang about in the previous song.

Number two: Father said we have to pray. We have to pray. We went around America telling the members what we have to do. We have to pray for those leaders who are not uniting with Parents, who don’t want to unite with Parents. Father told us to tell the members, "We have to pray for them." Those two things Father told us: We have to unite with True Parents and pray for those who are having difficulty uniting with True Parents, even splitting with True Parents.

From 2005, before I even started my ministry -- I was still a student of theology -- we had a chance to give lectures before leaders and I said very clearly, I said very clearly, “There is no new True Parent, there is no new King and no new center. There are no new True Parents. It is that simple." I made this very clear before I had any official position, any ministry.

When you look at the early disciples, the apostles, they gave their lives preaching the gospel of Christ. They didn’t go around saying they are the successor of Christ and that now God is going to use them to bring about salvation. In Matt 16:18 Jesus says, “And I tell you that you are Peter and on this rock, (pointing to Peter) on you I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” He gives Peter the biggest anointing. He says. “Upon you I will build my holy church. Upon you I give the mission of spreading the Gospel.”

Think about what kind of anointing that is! But Peter did not go around saying that he was the successor because he received that anointing. He did not say that now, after Jesus was gone he is the new Christ. That would have been a fatal error. He went and preached the Gospel. He went with John. He went with the early Apostles. In the Acts of the Apostles we see him moving, we see him meeting Paul, we see him witnessing, and we see miracles happening. Peter was very clear. He preached the crucifixion, the death and the resurrection of Jesus. And he blesses and praises and heals in the name of Jesus. That is a very important thing.

Let us read the second scripture, Matthew 10:24-25:

"A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub how much more the members of his household!"

Peter knew that he was a student of the teacher, but not the teacher. He knew he was a servant of the master, but not the master. It is enough for a student to be LIKE his teacher. So Peter tried to be Christ-LIKE, tried to be teacher-LIKE. That is why Christians to this day try to be Christ-LIKE, not to be the Christ, not to be the son of man, but to be Christ-LIKE, as the scripture says. This certainty and clarity is very, very important for us to understand as Unificationists, completing the mission of Christianity. This is the fatal flaw of those who may say they are the next True Parents or the next king or the center of God’s providence. This is what is very worrisome to True Parents.

There are, as you may know, splinter groups that say such things in Japan and in Korea. I tell members, "Don’t worry because the spirit world sees all and in the end our ancestors see how much we have been filial to True Parents. I absolutely believe to this day and continue to believe it from when I was studying theology, that True Parents are the eternal center of God’s providence and it is our task to not be the next True Parents but to inherit the Parental heart they have shown us and to bring glory to True Parents. That is the mission of the next generation."

True Parents, not us, are the ones that were selected to fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ. They were the ones selected to fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ. They are the ones that died for us, descended into hell to take our place, and they were resurrected seven times. They are the ones who paid the indemnity price for individual, family, tribal, national, world and cosmic sin. There is no way that on our own effort we can pay this indemnity that has been accumulated from the time of the fall. So only the chosen son of God, only the one who has been prepared by the history of the providence can be the one that can pay this indemnity.

By the victory of true love and the inheritance of parental heart, which Jesus was to fulfill, we are given salvation. Not by our own doing. Not because we are great, not because we deserve it, but because of the salvific power, the resurrective power of true love. That is why we receive that grace.

They always ask me when I am doing interviews, “So you are the next successor. How do you feel about this big responsibility? (Imitates the voice of the interviewers in a funny way)” They ask me this all the time. I always have to answer this question. I tell them, “There is no new successor, there are no new True Parents for us. The early apostles centered their life of prayer and faith and testimony and witnessing on the rock of Christ, and so do we, so do I. We center our life on the rock of True Parents. We don’t believe that there are new True Parents, a new successor who could take on that role. They hold the ultimate authority."

I tell them, "We are just employees just like you guys are working for your paper. We are employees, too. We are employees of True Parents. Our time comes and our time goes. We are a cloud, the next generation. Like in a Zen garden. When the beautiful black stones are hit by the rain they become shiny and beautiful. That is the time when the Zen garden is the most beautiful. Just like that we don’t become the rock. We are like the clouds that bring the rain, like the refreshing rain that makes the rock shiny and beautiful. That is our purpose. We are not here to proclaim ourselves as the new True Parents, the rock. The center is clear."

This was the essential point that Father wanted us to be clear on. That is the reason why he told us to do a tour in America and to continue to tell this to our brothers and sisters in Korea and Japan.

Let us look at the third scripture today, Matthew 10:32-33:

"Whoever acknowledges me before men I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven."

There are Christians who sacrifice their life. I heard a story of a young missionary. He was in a war-torn place. As a pastor he saw a child who was a young convert to Christianity, who loved Jesus. He said he saw this child dying on the street. He was shot five times in the stomach. The reason was that he was asked, “Are you Christian? Do you believe in Christ?” In that nation, in some Islamic nations, if you change your religion you can receive capital punishment. Not all Islamic nations do that but some Islamic nations do. In this story he was in one of those nations. So he was questioned, "Do you believe in Christ? What do you believe? Are you a Christian?" The child, who was eleven years old, said, “I am so scared, so scared, but I will not reject the Lord, and I do believe in Jesus.” He was shot five times. That Pastor said that he held that child in his arms while the child passed away.

So what is the price of having faith in the modern nations, even in Korea or even in America? What is the price of having faith? Someone may say, "You have a different faith then me!" But think about the price of faith in other places of the world. I remember meeting a member in UTS, a brother who was exactly in that same situation. He had to flee from his nation because he became a Unificationist. That is the price that is upon their shoulders and yet, just like Stephan, they did not deny Christ. Of course they don’t go around in those nations saying, "I am a follower of Christ" or singing that they are followers of Christ. But if they are asked they say, “Yes, that is what I believe.” They are that serious about their faith.

Again, “Whoever acknowledges me before men I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” When we understand the value of True Parents -- True Parents who completed the inheritance of the Parental heart that Jesus was to have completed, who completed the mission of Christ, who inherited the new mission of Christianity -- we can see that True Parents are in that incredible role. And because of that grace, because they have paid off the indemnity conditions for us at all of the levels, we can enter into the direct dominion, which we call Cheon Il Guk or the Kingdom of God.

This incredible grace is enormous. But some may say, "Now that I have received this grace, now because I am in, basically because I am in, I can do whatever I want and live however I want. I can even disown the Lord and do hateful things that God does not approve of. I can live in sin and live selfishly for the rest of my life and I will still be forgiven, still be in."

Even though we are given the grace of entering the Kingdom, still this does not mean that we will be free from judgment. True Parents have said that God is not our judge. In the Christian world we understand God to be our judge. Father has revealed to us that God is not the judge of us, not the judge of man, in the Kingdom. We are our own judges! This is a very incredible statement. We are our own judges, and our ancestors and our peers will judge us if we disown the Lord, who through torture and descending into hell got us into Cheon Il Guk, through their grace. If we disown them, if we betray them, if we go against them then the ancestors will judge us. We will be judged in Cheon Il Guk. We will be judged even though we are able to enter the kingdom. This is essential for us to remember, that we center ourselves on True Parents and not our own selves or our own egos. We need to center ourselves on True Parents, to inherit the Parental heart they have received and inherited from God. Father wanted us to be very clear with this at this time..

While Father is here it so important for us to understand this. While Father is here it is so critical for us to understand who the eternal center is. I am not the new center. Don’t look at me as the new center! Don’t even THINK I am the new king or whatever! That is totally false if you assume that. This applies also to anyone else who proclaims themselves the new true parents. This is what Father wanted us to clarify with the members.

Brothers and sisters around the world, we must be clear on this issue. Father asked us to go around calling for unity, to go around and call for prayer for those that are thinking of splitting from Father, for those who are thinking of not wanting to unite with True Parents. Our job as sons and daughters is not to take the place of True Parents -- as I stated about a million times in this sermon -- but to inherit their selfless love.

That is our job! Our job is to inherit the selfless love of True Parents, and it is our job to glorify them in our lives, glorify them in our works and our deeds. We need to understand that we are given grace. It is not by our own works and our own doings that we are given the grace of entering the Kingdom. Ninety-five percent is by the grace of God and true love. When we understand this then we can understand who we are. We are not our own; we cannot determine our own destiny. Nobody can determine their own destiny. We are in the hands of God and moving with him. True Parents said that this message must absolutely be clarified, not only in America, but also in Korea and also in Japan and around the world.

So brothers and sisters, at this time let us understand truly who is the center. That is our True Parents. They are the rock of our salvation, as we were singing. Let us always hold that deep within our hearts. Let us bow our heads.

Altar Call Prayer by Hyung Jin Nim:

God and True Parents have blessed us to be a greater blessing by inheriting the true love of God, the parental heart which will die and die and die for the sake of the children, again and again, the type of true love that can be victorious over death and obstacles, the type of true love that can resurrect and that True Parents have lived. Let us inherit that love and become a greater blessing to our families, cities, nations, world and cosmos. Let us manifest the Principle; let us join our hands together. Give and receive action, four positions foundation lifted up coming together -- may I inherit the true love of God. Aju!

Let us pray together, gather our hearts, and join in prayer. Let us close our eyes and lift our hands up, feel the face of God, feel His presence. Let us wipe away the tears of our True Parents. Let us pray.

Hyung Jin Nim calls everybody to the altar to receive prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you so much. Father we thank you this day because you are the rock upon which we are saved, and, Father, because of your deaths and resurrections, because of that incredible power and grace, we have a new resurrection inside of us.

Father, our Unification Movement is finally understanding why we are completing the mission of Jesus, why we stand in a providential history, why we are not a young movement, but why we are moving with 5000 years of your providence.

Father, let us get inside of us today. Let us realize that we are walking in the divine destiny with your divine movement, with your blessing. Father, let us have confidence in ourselves, and let us know that it is not by our own doing that good things will be received and good things will come to pass, but by us relying on the love that you have shed upon us and by being grateful for it. We pray that through your love we may be made new and made reborn.

Father, thank you so much for this day. We want to be able to be reborn today in our spirits. Our True Father is crying out to us today that united we stand and divided we fall. Our True Parents are crying out to the world today. Let us be one with them, one in heart and spirit. Let us center ourselves, our prayers, our lives, and our meditation on the victory of true love and move with that providence, move together with that divine destiny, and, Father, let us bring about the change in the world, which is our destiny.

Father, we thank you so much. We want to inherit this today. We hope that you can hold our hands today. We pray that we may be able to receive new life through this realization. Thank you for the everlasting life. We offer our thanks to you for the True Parents whom you called and chose to pay the indemnity for the sins accumulated from the early ancestors, and thank you for that grace. Because of this grace we are entering into the Kingdom. Let us be the best we can be. Father, let us be godly in our behavior, in our thoughts, in our minds. Come into our lives, come into our hearts, make us new, make us reborn. We thank you so much. We pray all this in our names as central blessed families. We pray this in the name of True Parents together as brothers and sisters in true love. Aju!

Prayer of determination by Rev. Michael Brazil:

Our Heavenly Father, we really from the depth of our hearts want to thank you for the incredible message we’ve heard today. Help us to really reach the inside of our hearts and understand what our True Parents have done for us. Let us go back to when we first joined this movement and were filled with incredible inspiration and joy. Help us to remember what that was like and rekindle that fire within us, help us to understand the message today, what our True Parents are asking us to do, to be united with them, be completely one in heart and mind.

Heavenly Father, help us to wipe away any doubt we might have and help us to really pray for those who are struggling or do have doubts. Be with them, give them renewed understanding and faith, give them renewed belief in who True Parents are, and that we truly must stand united or we will be divided. Heavenly Father, thank you so deeply for this incredible message again.

You truly want us to go out to the world and to feel in our hearts that we are the true children of our True Parents, that we are their sons and daughters, that we will lift them up and that we will bring the glory to them that they deserve. Father, you want them to be recognized, for if they are the world can be changed overnight, it doesn’t have to take 500 years, it can take an instant. Guide us to have that confidence in our faith, that we change ourselves and reach out to change others, with this incredible love that we are inheriting.

It’s an amazing true love. Help us to believe in it, to live it, to practice it. Today you can look at us and know that we are your children, that you are the absolute True Father and True Mother. Please receive this prayer, receive our hearts, and receive our new determination that this week ahead will be different. We will be different; we will proclaim who we are, your sons and daughters, united in minds and hearts with our True Parents, to stand tall, strong and bold to claim this world for you. We thank you and we offer all of this with our deepest heartfelt gratitude as your sons and daughters from around the world. Aju!
