Welcoming Remarks by Hyung Jin Nim:

Today is a very sad day. Because my wife’s not here. She’s a little under the weather, and True Parents have captured her, in a very loving way. That’s why I’m a little weak today. But we will have to carry on. We are very blessed today, brothers and sisters.

We start with Cheon Seong Gyeong, page 790, today. Father speaks:

“I live for eternity centering on true love, like God. God created me this way. If you come to fulfill this portion of responsibility you will truly be successful.”

"I live for eternity centering on true love." Brothers and sisters, True Father has spoken a lot about true love. The teaching that he has given is so massive. Father defines true love very clearly. True love is God’s essence, His Divinity. True love is selfless love. It’s a love that can bring even our worst enemy to natural surrender. Father also shares that true love is a power, it’s an action. It’s not just a feeling or a thought. Through this power of action we are able to overcome the difficulties, the enemies, in our lives. We actually do that not by force but by natural subjugation.

Father says if we are able to do that we understand that God created us to do this, that this is OUR actual essence as well. When we come to fulfill this portion of responsibility, we’ll be successful in anything we do.

It is true that people who really do succeed are able to work with others. They’re able to consider others, give praise to others who are doing a good job. This is a very important trait of true love. True love does not just want to get praise for oneself but goes beyond. It’s allowing to share that selflessly with others. I believe that’s one of the things that True Parents are talking to us about today.

Brothers and sisters, welcome to service. I know it’s a very lonely welcome (smiling), but welcome to service. We hope that in every service we can truly glorify and bring praise and happiness to True Parents and Almighty Heavenly Father. If we do that, I do believe we will truly, this week, accomplish more, get more things done, be more inspired, more enthusiastic, and give people around us more strength. It’s going to be a great week. If you believe it, let’s give it up for God! I believe it! Let’s have a great week. Welcome to service.

Family Pledge:

Our family, owner of CIG, pledges to represent and become central to heaven and earth by attending God and True Parents. We pledge to perfect the dutiful family way of filial piety in our family, patriots in our nation, saints in the world and divine sons and daughters in heaven and earth by centering on true love.

God is the creator who is omniscient and omnipotent and created all things in the cosmos. For the first time in human history the tradition of true love, true life and true lineage of God has been realized through True Parents. When we attend God and True Parents with a true heart, we can become a central family of heaven and on earth. Only God and True Parents can guide us to God’s Kingdom, the land of blessing. True Father has become a filial son in God’s family, a patriot in the nation, saint in the world and divine son in heaven and earth. We must inherit this beautiful tradition of True Father. Blessed families must accomplish what God wants us to do in our family. AJU.

Meditation:

Let’s take this time to unite our mind, body and breath. We’ll start with our body. Let’s stretch our hands towards the earth today, breathing in the earth’s energy, and breathing in towards our heart. As we pass our living heart, breathing out towards heaven, stretch up towards heaven. See what God wants us to receive today, give us today: new hope, new inspiration, new strength. Breathing in. As we pass our living hearts, breathing out. Once again stretching towards the earth, gather universal prime energy towards our heart, breathing in. As we pass our living hearts breathing out towards heaven, stretch up and receive God’s love today, his compassion and wisdom, breathing in. As we pass our living hearts, breathing out.

Let’s now prepare our minds and be seated and sit up front of our chairs, so we can keep our backs straight, so we can breathe evenly and smoothly and calmly. Let us now close our eyes and enter into our first meditation and visualization practice.

Let us visualize ourselves not in this sanctuary but walking in a beautiful forest. It’s spring. The air is cool, it’s raining. We have an umbrella that’s sheltering us from the rain. I invite you to hear the sound of the rain on the leaves, the coolness of the air, the freshness and the humidity. Notice how all the creation is happy to be nourished by the rain. We can hear the beautiful rain drops on the ground. As we look up ahead we are going to see a beautiful stream. Let’s walk up to that stream.

I’d like you pay attention to the sound as you walk towards the sound of stream. As the sound gets louder, the raindrops sound begins to fade into the sound of the stream. When we stand in front of the stream, we can hear the power of the stream. We can hear the softness of the water, feel the healing power that comes from the water. We can still hear very faintly the raindrops on our umbrella.

In this place let us gently close our eyes and breathe in this fresh wonderful air. As we breathe in new life in our hearts let us say "I am alive" and as we breathe out let us say in our hearts "thank you". As we breathe in, "I am alive", as we breathe out in our hearts let us simply say "thank you". One more time, breathe in, "I am alive". Final exhalation, breath out, "thank you".

God and True Parents have blessed us with the blessing of life, to inherit the true love of God. True love is God’s essence, His divinity, the selfless love that brings even the worst enemy to natural surrender. If we can inherit this, we will be a greater blessing to our family, our community, city, nation and world. Let us join our hearts for prayer.

Opening Prayer by Rev. Kyle Toffey:

Dearest loving Heavenly Parents, we come before you today with anxious anticipation for this service and our time together, knowing that more than WE want to reach out and touch you, that YOU want to reach out and touch US.

Heavenly Father, we are coming from so many different places, not just from around the world, but from our stages of life and the situations that we are going through. You know us so well. So as we come here today, I really pray that each and every person here can hear Your voice, can get the guidance and the love that they need, in order to really truly be lifted up and joyful.

Heavenly Father, we are at such a precious time in human history where we can know You more. I really pray that today in this service we can make a joyful sound to You, that we can enthusiastically sing and pray and wish in our hearts that You come and visit us. If we do that, we know that You will indeed come.

We want to be a beacon of light that shines up to You, giving You hope and new inspiration. So as we participate in the service today, I really pray, Father, that Your presence can be felt by each and every one of us, that we can feel Your love, Your guidance and Your personal care for each and every one of us. Heavenly Father, we love You, we know that You love us. Let us have a great service today, really inspire each other and inspire YOU. We pray these things together as one family in our own names as Blessed Central Families, AJU.

Remarks about prayer by Hyung Jin Nim:

Thank you very much. Brothers and sisters, let’s take this time to pray. We want to pray for our special Abel Angels who helped us during this week. We want to pray they be with us next week. We want to always encourage them. We want to have a living relationship with people whom we love and who we know are caring for us. We want to take this time to pray for our Abel Angels. Abel Angel is the person you know is really caring for you in the spirit world. For me that is Young Jin hyung, that’s my brother who is one year above me. I know he’s always with me, protecting me. I know he’s going to be with me this next week. Let’s take a little time for those special people who are still with us, who are still working on our behalf. Let’s take time to pray for them. Let’s pray together.

All these things we pray together with our brothers and sisters around the world and in the spirit world. We pray and offer our hearts in our names as blessed central families, AJU.

Thank you, brothers and sisters. It is really so important to include brothers and sisters who have passed, especially the ones that we know that are really with us. Many times we may feel alone, we may feel that we are walking this path by ourselves, but in those times it has brought me great comfort to know that my brother is with me in my personal life. He’s protecting me, guiding me. I’ve had certain experiences that really confirm that. I want to really include them into our lives, to be a part of our lives, we don’t want to forget them as time passes. They are so precious. Thank you so much for praying for them.

Let’s take time now to encourage the person next to you. If you came with your spouse, now is the time to see her with new eyes. Give her a big hug and say I love you three times. Encourage the person next to you.

Interesting story:

It was preaching time, and the preacher came up and was talking about forgiveness, forgiving your enemies. The preacher asked for a show of hands, “Who is ready to forgive your enemies?” About 50% of the congregation raised their hands, “I’m ready.” The minister continued on, about 20 minutes, and then asked again, “Who is now ready to forgive their enemies?” About 80% of the people, but there were a couple of people not raising their hands. He went on again for another 15 minutes, asked the question again, “Now who is ready to forgive their enemies?” EVERYBODY raised their hands except for one person. The person’s name was Mr. Jones. The preacher asked Mr. Jones "Are you not willing to forgive your enemy? Everyone here is will to forgive their enemies? Are you not willing to forgive your enemies?" Mr. Jones says, “I don’t have any enemies.” “Mr. Jones, this is very unusual,” the preacher said. “I know you’re 86 years old, it’s almost impossible to live your live without making a single enemy. Can you come up here and explain how you lived that long without making a single enemy, without having one enemy in the world.” Mr. Jones teetered up to the front and briefly explained, “It’s very easy. I’ve outlived them all!” (Laughter)

True Parents Declaration:

These are my True Parents, the eternal King and Queen of Peace, and liberator of God's Heart! They have saved me from my past. They have blessed my future, and they give True Love, Forgiveness and Happiness today and I choose to receive it! My mind is awake, my heart is open wide, and from this moment I change forever! In my own name, AJU!

Main Sermon:

Brothers and Sisters, I’d like to talk to you about standing up in faith. One of the keys to living the blessed life is being able to be skillful in overcoming our battles that we have from day to day, standing up when it’s right, when we need to.

We face battles everyday: getting up, going to work, our finances, our relationships; we even may be discriminated against at the workplace for being a Unificationist. We also face battles in our spiritual life, etc. These battles are many times not so much fights that we have to win, but problems that can be solved.

You only have a limited amount of energy per day. You can’t waste all your energy on fighting every single one of your inconveniences. Whenever somebody at the office is talking behind your back, or when somebody is saying something nasty, you can’t fight it all the time. We can’t ALWAYS go and confront everybody. God believes in us. This is one of the keys: God believes in us. Learning to be skillful and standing up at the right moment, learning when to stand up, this is one of the keys to the blessed life.

Let’s take a look at some of the world scriptures today. Christianity: Rom 8:35-39.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, distress or persecution, or famine or nakedness or peril or sword? No. In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

We see this in the Christian tradition. It is through the relationship to the divine that we are able to win over the tribulations, distress, persecution etc. that we have to endure many times in our life of faith. This relates not only to physical things, but to our spiritual life as well.

Let’s look at Islam, Koran, 3rd Suran. We’ll read that together:

“If you persevere and ward off evil then that is of the steadfast heart of things.”

Here again we see the importance of perseverance, of warding off the temptations, of being strong and overcoming battles, as a very important part of our life of faith.

We’ll take a look at Buddhism today. Lotus Sutra 13th verse:

“For the sake of preaching the sutra, every hard thing we will endure. We will not love body nor life but care only for the supreme way.”

Many people in the West think that Buddhism is just meditating and being peaceful, calm, etc, but there is a very strong emphasis on faith and also energy. Also effort is an extremely important component of Buddhism. For the sake of preaching this sutra, even the hard things we’ll have to endure, overcome those battles, overcome persecution, etc.

Let’s take a look at True Father’s words from “Standing up and being Brave”, Cheon Seong Gyeong, Unification Family Life, pg 249.

“We must become new, but how must we become new? This morning you have to take a new stand by casting off your habitual faith of the past. You have to discard your attitude of life which dealt with the night, and absorb and digest this environment with the subject nature which is able to greet the new environment and the new spring.”

This is such a beautiful quotation. Here again, we can relate this to the transition of indemnity period and the age of liberation and complete release, where we are really opening up a new era not only for our tradition, but for also the world, spiritually.

Standing up in our lives is really one of the keys in living a blessed life. Because there will be times when we have to stand up for ourselves. There will be times when we are overwhelmed by attack, and have to “choose our battles wisely” -- everyone in parenting has heard this phrase.

Human beings get into conflict when they live together. This is almost inevitable. Scientists have said that this is a normal part of human evolution, that conflict in human society is inevitable. Violent conflict resolution however is not effective, and this should be avoided at all costs. But it is very important to be skillful in small things and to be able to choose when and when NOT to confront others or when or when not to even SAY something to others.

If every day while you are living with the kids you confront everything that doesn’t fit exactly what you think that child should do, or if the child confronts every single thing about the parent, this will create bitter enemies very quickly. You will scar each other very quickly. We will be lonely very quickly.

Learning when to step up and learning when to let things pass, this is a really important skill in living the blessed life. But on the other hand, if we don’t ever stand up for ourselves we can be taken advantage of; we can be continually stepped on. So learning this balance of when to let things go, when to not mind it so much, when to let it just bounce off you, and when to say “what a minute, that’s not fair,” this is one of the keys.

One of our boys was going to school. His name is Shin Man. He met this one guy in his class, much taller than him, and he was making fun of Shin Man, calling him Shin Man Doo. Shin means “new” and Man Doo means “dumpling”. “Hey ‘new dumpling’, how are doing?” Playing with his name. This was driving the boy insane; it was driving him really crazy, he didn’t want to go to school anymore, loosing all his energy to study, etc. He was really stressed about this, talking to us all the time about it, didn’t want to go to school anymore.

But he used a brilliant strategy. He used his head. The bully’s name was “Ko Tung Un”. So Shin Man one day thought of a nice strategy to discuss this issue with him. He said, “You know what, if you keep calling me Shin Man Doo, I’m going to call you Ko Tung Oh!” That’s actually a type of fish. Ko Tung Un is his name but Ko Tung Oh is a type of fish. “If you keep calling me “Man-doo” I’ll call you “fishy.” They made a peaceful agreement not to do this to each other. Now I heard last night they are the best of friends. I’m going to give it up for my boy today! Applause.

This is when Shin Man stood up. He approached this in a skillful way, approached this conflict resolution in a skillful way. He took a risk. He had to stand up. He could have been beaten up. Whatever situation could have happened, he took a risk to stand up, to believe in himself, to believe that he didn’t have to put up with somebody harassing him all the time. He said, “Enough is enough.” But he didn’t use violent means. I always teach my kids -- and this is a principle we learn in martial arts all the time -- that we don’t solve things by violent means. He used his intuition, his intelligence, used his skill to pull this off. I was so proud to see this as his daddy, so proud. It inspired me to say, “You know what? Enough is enough, for me, too, in my own life!”

When we look at the Unification Church tradition, we can be bullied by thoughts in our mind. We can be bullied by thoughts that say, “You’ll never be really relevant in society. The Unification Church is really small; it’s not really that much of a voice. Unification tradition is really not that powerful, doesn’t have a really strong message; it doesn’t have a really strong teaching."

We can be bullied by these kinds of thoughts that can ruminate in our minds. In fact, there are many people even in our community that repeat these things in their minds. I’ve heard it many times. But you know, I realized that enough is enough. I’m not going to believe that anymore. I’m not going to believe that our teaching doesn’t have any relevance or that it’s not appropriate for this age. I’m not going to believe anymore that we are going to be continually just criticized and always be sub-par. In my own mind, enough is enough. I am going to start believing, and just like Shin Man, stand up for my faith, stand up for the church that I represent, stand up for the teachings that we represent as a movement.

You know, I thought about it a little more. "I’m sick and tired," I thought in my mind, "of being criticized as a cult, being slandered as a crazy religion, a new religion, etc. We are going to stand up to fight these bullies in our minds. Not with hot tempers, not by attacking and getting angry. This is not the way; but by faith and mind and patience, teamwork and truthfulness. These are the things that overcome this kind of discrimination."

When we look at the Biblical tradition, we see all the stories from Moses -- you know, he had to face the Pharaoh. He had to stand up and risk his life. He had to stand up to the most powerful man in that region. He had to ask him to free his people. Of course, he was rejected, but he had to continue to battle, continue to fight, to overcome and to free his people.

Joshua and Caleb, after Moses led them to the wilderness, had to enter into Canaan. They also had to fight for their tradition; they also had to stand up for themselves. They had to go in and defeat the kings of Canaan, so that they could achieve the promise that God had given them. This was not just merely problem solving in daily lives, but this was a real fight for their faith, for the identity, for their people. It was a struggle. They really had to put their necks on the line. This is a really important thing for the prophets: They really put their necks on the line, to stand up for their faith.

Every great historical figure -- we can see -- even the figures for non-violence, had to fight oppression and tyranny. Martin Luther King Jr. had to fight bigoted white supremacy and risked his life. He was assassinated. Gandhi had to fight against age old caste traditions, which were very hard to change. He had to challenge an oppressive government, risking his life. The current Dali Lama continues to fight by non violent means, continues to challenge the nation of China to free Tibet. He continues to fight for the progress of that nation.

When Kook Jin hyung came to Korea, there was a huge battle here. It was a non violent fight. But he was trying to change the culture in our movement, change the culture of people trying to get into positions of authority, so that public funds could be used as private assets. This is not appropriate. He had to change this, he had to fight this. He was assaulted; they had demonstrations in front of his office saying “Go home!”

He said he fought this with transparency, with patience, by making real results, financial results, in the businesses, reporting with brutal honesty to Father. Even though it upset Father, he reported so brutally to Father at times that it would upset him. Kook Jin hyung had to go through this. He had to stand up for the Unification tradition because he wanted to see the church develop into something that the people he works with in the outside world could respect and look up to; because he wanted to see a tradition that is improving and becoming more transparent, becoming stronger as an organization. He invested himself, put his neck on the line.

In our own work of ministry, we’ve been doing this for a year and a half. Sometimes it feels like a huge battle trying to solve one problem after another in the organization, caring for the congregation. Many things have to be addressed in the organization, even trying to fight for the change of our image when people in society look at us as Unification tradition. This is a real battle. Whenever we do interviews, or discussing, people ask us hard questions. We are really trying to fight for the change of perception when people look at us.

Even when I was inaugurated as International President, I put my neck on the line. In front of Father I said, “We are a religion.” There was so much identity confusion in our church. We were confused: are we a family, are we a federation family, are we just an educational institution, or are we a religion? I said clearly, "We are a religion. This is what I believe. I studied religion. We have everything that a religion has. We have theology, liturgy, belief, cosmology, ritual, organization, etc. We have everything that a religion has. We are a religion."

I believe that calling ourselves Unificationists, being proud of ourselves as Unificationists, is something that we don’t need to hide under a cover of the Family Federation or other names. We should be proud to be Unificationists.

This is important because this is showing transparency. This is showing that we believe in what we believe and that we are honest about what we believe that we don’t try to hide it, that we are proud of our religion, proud of our faith. Two years ago we were confused about what our identity was; we couldn’t stand up for our tradition. We didn’t know whether or not we were a religion, or what kind of tradition we were.

We had somehow come to believe that we were a federation that promotes conservative values. Something like a Steven Covey Institute. Or a John Gray true family education center. But we forgot that we believe that True Parents are the Messiah, the Lord of the Second Coming, the inheritor of God’s true love, the one chosen by God to fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ, the Savior. This is one of the central aspects of the Unification Church belief system. We forgot that we are to share this message with the world, the message about the True Parents of Humankind. We forgot that we are to create believers and filial children of True Parents for the growth of the Unification Movement as well.

Almost two years have passed, and I have seen an incredible transformation. I have seen people go from being complete doubters to becoming believers. People said, “We are not a religion, we passed that stage; that was in the past ages of the New Testament. Now we are in the Completed Testament.” But the people saying that became people who are proud of our religion as the Unification Church and sharing it. I’ve seen people say, "We will never be able to witness. Korean people will never be able to witness, we can’t be relevant, we can’t witness to Americans, it is so hard to witness." But these people have become incredible witnessers.

I’ve seen people change from saying, "Tithing is completely useless" to becoming people who understand that tithing is a central faith practice, that tithing is supporting the community of the faithful as a central faith practice. I’ve seen people who doubted that the Unification Church would do anything relevant in their lifetime, making a real impact as a religion, to becoming people who are standing up and fighting for Unification Church to become recognized in the society and in the world as an honest, transparent, mature, professional, growing religion that truly empowers others to live and inherit the selfless true love of God.

I’ve seen people change from people who criticized Cheon Bok Goong. When Abonim first announced Cheon Bok Goong, it was, “Oh, a mega church, why do we need a mega church?” They became people who actually offered to the building of Cheon Bok Goong and see it as a symbol of hope and victory for our tradition, seeing it as something that can really move the nation. I’ve seen a great transformation in our lives, in the church work that we do. Even in the business groups and all the other areas, I’ve seen a tremendous change in the way we think about ourselves as Unificationists. I think this is really important.

Brothers and Sisters, what can we learn today? It is really a key to learn to choose our battles wisely in our life. These battles can be in daily life with our family, our friends, but they also can be in our life direction and purpose. If one is resorting to violence to win others, against others, this is very immature. This should be avoided at all costs. But choosing to stand up for yourself skillfully, this is important, just like my boy when he stood up to that child. I’m very proud that he stood up and did not let himself be a doormat to that person. People like Martin Luther King and Ghandi had to stand up for a great cause. They created history because of that.

In our own life as Unificationists, I do believe it is time for us to stand up as a religion, to stand up to say, "We WILL be here. We will not go away. We are going to keep growing, and we will be the tradition that is opening up a new era for the world." We have to have the confidence to say, “Enough is enough!" We believe in our teaching, we believe that it has meaning, it has power. We believe that it is true.

I studied with a wonderful theologian when I was at Harvard. She was a brilliant professor, she taught me Christian theology. She was a fantastic woman. She was a theologian from Britain, just so intelligent. When I studied with her -- she is an Anglican priest -- she said that in doing ecumenical work she was asked the question whether or not she believed Christianity was the truth. Her answer was very clear: “I do believe it is true, that’s why I’m an Anglican priest.”

I love that clarity that she expressed. She did not just fall under the weight of pluralism. She did not say, “It’s true relatively...,” but she said, “I am an Anglican priest and I believe that it is true.” And she is teaching at Harvard. I found that very courageous and very brave. It actually changed my own expression of how I pursue and how I talk about Unification tradition as well. I also can profess that I believe it is true. Brothers and sisters, I believe that is one of the most important keys as we move forward, to really be able to stand up for our faith, not just for education or a program, but really as our religion, to be able to witness and share.

If we do that, I do believe that by standing up for our faith, being confident of who we are as Unificationists, being the best we can be in whatever work we do, whether as a lawyer, as a CPA, and truly are not shy to share we are Unificationists, I believe that we are advancing the Unification tradition. I believe that we are creating value for the community that our parents have shed their blood, sweat and tears for, and I believe that, if we do that, and stand up for our faith at this time, while we are moving towards the world temple, we will find ourselves definitely with more victory, with more illumination, with more peace and be a greater blessing for others.

If you receive the message, let’s give it up for God and True Parents. (Applause)

Homeland Meditation Practice:

Let us now visualize ourselves not in this sanctuary. Let us visualize ourselves walking on a beautiful meadow in the middle of spring. We feel the weather is warm, the air is clear. We feel the softness of the earth, the steadiness, the support that we have from below.

As we look toward our left, we see a beautiful stream that is meandering down. We notice the beautiful birds that are bathing in that stream... flying away... flying towards the stream. Let us take a minute to listen to that stream, the sound of its story.

As you walk up ahead you see beautiful flowers blooming near a field. As you look towards the sky you see a beautiful blue sky... limitless and vast. As you look up ahead, you notice that True Parents are there waiting for us. Let us be seated in front of True Parents. True Father with his right hand, True Mother with her left hand, place their hands on top our heads. They give us their blessing. “May you inherit the true love of God,” they say. Allow that blessing to move from the top of your head all the way to the bottom of your feet. If there are any sick cells in our body, any stress cells, let them be completely healed and rejuvenated.

As you breathe in, in our hearts let us say “I’m alive”; as you breathe out let us say, “Thank you.” As you breathe in a second breath, say "I’m alive"; as you breathe out a second exhalation, "Thank you’". Third inhalation, "I’m alive"; third exhalation, "Thank you".

I will inherit the true love of God, true love which is God’s essence, His divinity, the divinity that is selfless, that can bring even the worst enemy to natural surrender. We’ll inherit that by living the blessed life. By inheriting the true love of God, we will become greater blessings to our world, our community, our city, our tribe and to our families. Let us now join our hearts in prayer.

Final Prayer by Hyung Jin Nim:

Heavenly Father, thank You so much for this day. Father, we pray that we may have strength and confidence in our minds. Father, in this most auspicious age You have prepared such an incredible historical course and providential course. You have prepared such an amazing truth for this world which is that we are to inherit the true love of God, that true love is Your essence and that we can actually inherit that. Not by selfish means and not by trying to become more powerful ourselves, but by selfless true love action that is able to bring the worst enemy to natural surrender.

Father, we know that if we are able to inherit this we become Your object partner. We become those people who can share TRUE joy and true love with You. Father, we thank You so much for giving us this opportunity, because no longer are we separated from You forever as just the sinful human beings. Father, You have allowed us to realize the human potential that You gave us from the very beginning, and True Father and True Mother have allowed us to realize through the teachings of the principle, that we can actually receive Your divine value. Thank You so much for giving us this time.

We pray that we will be able to be strong, we may be wise in our lives, we may not be haughty or arrogant, or go forth and scream and attack people. Father, let us be wise and patient, let us be always working on our inner selves, to truly substantiate Your true love, Your selfless actions. Let us become better each day even just a little bit. That’s a great victory. Father, we thank You.

We want to stand up in this age. We don’t want to keep sitting down, and we know we are standing here because of Your grace. We know we want to get forward, too, and really be able to establish Cheon Il Guk here, so we can bring tremendous joy to You, and You can establish Your kingdom here on earth. Father, we thank You so much for this day that You have offered to us. We want to go forward this day, leaving the sanctuary with a new strength, with a new confidence in ourselves as Unificationists, with a new belief in our faith, that we can share this and that it is attractive.

Father, there are so many new people being witnessed to today. Let us see that as evidence that our faith is attractive in this age. Thank You so much. Give us the confidence, give us the strength, let us not be held down by the weight of bullies in our mind or in our physical presence. But let us be strong, let us be wise, let us always be true to You. Thank You so much. We pray that You may give us strength once more. We offer all the glory and thanks, in our own names as Central Blessed Families together as one family, AJU.

Welcome Remarks:
Yeon Ah Nim:

Good afternoon brothers and sister! (Good Afternoon) It is really great to see you. Today we have a glorious day outside. I hope you have a blessed and beautiful week. We are always grateful to have you with us, and for those who are joining with us via internet, we are also grateful to have you here with us.

Welcome brothers and welcome sisters. You see, brothers and sisters, it’s important that when we’re in these seasons, to understand they are impermanent, they do pass, and to remember that this season is for growing, for planting, and that harvest is coming around the corner. When we do that, we will be able to overcome the Canaans in our life, the giants in our life, the obstacles, the challenges, because the power of this kind of thinking, of this kind of heartistic quality is stronger than any of those challenges.

Hyung Jin Nim:

Welcome brothers and sisters! Good to see you all!

Today we’d like to start with Cheon Seong Gyeong page 1298. Father says,

“The family is the representative training ground that teaches love for humanity. It is a representative place where the center of heart is established. When members of a family love and trust each other and live a life of happiness, the center of the whole universe is thus established. And everyone can enjoy happiness. This is the beginning of the ideal realm. There is no meaning to existence without love.”

Brothers and sisters, I love that one middle sentence: “When members of the family love and trust each other and live a life of happiness, the center of the whole universe is established.” It’s so important that we understand that. When we hear Father say something like this, we can see that he is really centering everything on true love, which is selfless, which exists for the sake of the others in the family. When family members reach that level of maturity, when they are able to give and receive that kind of love, then we can trust each other naturally. We become trustworthy. And when that happens then the family becomes the center of the universe, the beginning of the ideal realm. And once again Father reminds us that there’s no meaning to existence without this kind of true love.

Brothers and sisters, it’s so important to understand that whenever we are creating the ideal family, sometimes we may feel, “Hey, you’re supposed to be trusting me, loving me.” But we have always to remember the Principle. Everybody has their 5% responsibility to truly LIVE the life of true love. That is to actualize it, that is to live for the sake of the others in the family. When that happens then that person is trustworthy. That person naturally receives so much love. And that’s really what Father’s key teaching is today, and really it’s the key to the whole Principle, to the whole teaching. Brothers and sisters, this quote, in a nut shell, really exemplifies, "Inherit the true love of God!" The entire Principle is in that one sentence. If you just remember that, you will understand Principle. Just understand, "Inherit the true love of God!" That’s Father’s entire teaching. Very simple, very powerful.

Brothers and sisters, our hope is that during service we’re able to inherit that true love, that we’re able to inherit that true love in our families, that kind of true love. When we actualize that, that’s the beginning of the ideal world. That’s what our Father says. Brothers and sisters, we hope that we can start with the right heart here in this service and that we’re able to then bring the blessings, the training, the practice, into our lives. We do believe that if we go with that kind of heart, we’ll definitely find ourselves with more victory this coming week. We’ll get more things done this coming week. God will bless us in a whole new way. If you believe it, let’s give it up to God one time. (Applause) Once again, welcome to service. Let’s have a great service. Return the glory and joy to God and True Parents today. Welcome once again.

Yeon Ah Nim’s Message:

Yesterday, there was Parents' Day in Korea, so we also went to Chung Pyung to offer flowers to True Parents and a little gift. As we offered flowers to True Parents, they said, “Oh, actually we already got flowers!” “Ah, okay.” They showed us the flower basket that was actually given by their grandchildren. It was a paper flower basket, and I could see the flowers a little bit crooked and not perfect, but Parents were so happy and proud to show us what they received from their grandchildren.

And at that moment I remembered what Dr. Fauntroy said when he was in Headquarter Church, “We all become once an adult, and twice a child." So maybe that’s why probably they have this emotional and heartistic connection, and it was so wonderful to see.

Brothers and sisters, True Father said, “Our relationship with God is a parent child relationship, and in order to experience God’s love, it is really wonderful to attend your physical parents, if they are in the spirit world; because they are Abel spirits. Just like in my case: My physical mother is in the spirit world. It is equally important to attend to your parents when they are in the physical world. So please, call them and please write them letters, and please visit them before its too late. Brothers and sisters, I love you so much, and we believe in you. Aju!

Opening Prayer by Rev. Michael Brazil:

Our Heavenly Father, our Heavenly Mother, we thank You for this beautiful day that You have given to us, for the love that You shower upon us, for the love that envelops us, holds us up, strengthens us, encourages us, gives us hope, belief, faith.

We are so grateful that we are here, that we can be here. We thank You from the bottom of our hearts that You have blessed us, that we know what we know. And we pray that that knowledge will give us strength, that it will give us the power, the heart, the love, the love that would be able to embrace and envelop ourselves, our families. And then it will be able to grow and reach out to our tribe, our clan, our city, community. It will be large enough to reach out and embrace our nation and even the world, and then, Heavenly Father, it would be large enough to embrace You, that You will feel embraced and loved. Imagine that, You being embraced and loved!

Heavenly Father, we want to become those kinds of sons and daughters. As yesterday, Parents' Day was celebrated here in Korea, we want to honor You as our True Original Parents, thanking You for all the glory and gifts and honor that You have bestowed upon us. But we want to turn around and give it all back to You and thank You, not just in words or thoughts, but even more powerfully in our deeds.

We want to invite You to be here today. We want to welcome You into our hearts so that You will feel truly welcomed. Again, we thank You so deeply. We ask that You be here with us, that our hearts might be open to hear Your word today, so that we can become even better sons and daughters, better brothers and sisters, better fathers and mothers, better grandfathers and grandmothers or grandsons and granddaughters.

Again, we thank You, and we humbly offer all this to You, as Blessed Central Families from around the world, Aju!

Hyung Jin Nim's words at the end of meditation practice:

God and True Parents have blessed us to live the blessed life. Through the blessed life we are to inherit the true love of God, a love that is selfless, that can even bring the worst enemy to natural surrender. Through inheriting that true love let us become greater blessings, individually, to our families, to our communities, to our nations and our world.

Remarks about prayer by Hyung Jin Nim:

Brothers and sisters, it’s so really important to remember that God is our ever-present helper in time of need, and He is there and He is truly hoping for us to become everything that He has placed within us.

One thing is really remarkable about Father’s way of prayer. One thing, that Father discovered about God, is very amazing. It is that God, just like our Pastor Brazil prayed, needs consoling. How happy He must be when He has children who can give it back to Him, all that love, all that care, when He can receive that back from His children. How amazing that is!

Sometimes in our life -- we talked about this a couple of weeks ago -- we will feel the need for help other than from our physical friends around us. But many times we may feel that God is very distant and very far away. We may even feel sorry to ask God, because we understand His suffering that He had to endure.

In our lives -- we talked about it two weeks ago -- we have people that God prepares for us. We have relationships that He has set in motion, that He has prepared. And these relationships are not only physical. And those are our Abel angels, like our guardian angels -- we talked about that. We all have somebody who loves us, who -- we know it -- is absolutely there for us. That person maybe has passed away into spirit world. For me it is my brother, one year older than me. I know he loves me. I know he is there. I know he’s present, I know he’s caring for me, he’s protecting me.

Brothers and sisters, it’s so important to remember these friends that we have. They may be your mom or dad that are in spirit world, maybe your grandfather, maybe your uncle or aunt. But these Abel angels, these Abel good spirits, these friends, are so relevant, because in our life we can’t do everything alone. We need to understand that we can lean on friends and ask some help. It’s very important to understand.

Brothers and sisters, today I really do believe, every one of you, as you live your week, as you take your kids to school, as you go about your business, do your work and raise your children, I do believe your Abel angel is guarding you, protecting you. She or he is with you, making sure that car doesn’t swerve and hit, making sure that you have the right person to meet that day. That’s a great friend.

Brothers and sisters, I want to take this time of prayer just to acknowledge that friend. We want to give that friend some encouragement. When I’m praying to Young Jin hyung, just thanking him for being with me and comforting me this week, this is really important because Father teaches us that when we pray for our brothers and sisters in spirit world, we help them grow spiritually.

So brothers and sisters, I want to take that time today. Let’s take this time to pray. Let’s pray with our Abel angels today. They’re with us. Let’s pray that they will be with us this week. Let us pray and ask them to be with us for the next week. Let’s take this time to pray for our Abel angels. Let’s take time!

(Everyone prays, Hyung Jin Nim prays with low voice. Before the end of the unison prayer Hyung Jin Nim prays with loud voice:)

Thank You so much! We know you guys are with us. We know that the Abel angels are protecting and guiding us. Heavenly Father, thank You for sending them to be with us, for allowing these everlasting relationships to endure in spirit world, beyond physical life. We thank You and pray all these things together with our Abel good spirits, Abel angels, in our names. Aju!

More remarks of Hyung Jin Nim about prayer:

It is so important, I cannot tell you how important it is to remember those very precious loved ones who are in the spirit world. We can get very busy during the week and kind of forget them. But it is so important to remember that they are with us, that they are helping us.

True Father says that when they are in the spiritual world and working with Hyo Jin Nim, Heung Jin Nim, Young Jin Nim etc, that they work with the authority of God.

So let us remember those brothers and sisters who are with us, those Abel angels. They are sent to help us. This is a really great source of comfort for myself. I am always so grateful for this, particularly for my brother Young Jin hyung who is always looking after me. I am so grateful.

Thank you so much for praying for those Abel angels, brothers and sisters.

Interesting story:

Before we start sharing words, I always like to start with something a little interesting. I heard a story about a little grandson that asks his granddaddy. He said, “Grandpa, is it true that everybody who didn’t ride on Noah’s boat died?” And the grandpa said, “Yeah, that’s what the Bible says, dear.” And then the little grandson said, “Grandpa, were you on Noah’s boat?” Grandpa said, “No honey, I’m not that old. I wasn’t on the boat.” The grandson said, “Then, why are you alive?”

Hyung Jin Nim’s Sermon:

Brothers and sisters, today I’d like to talk to you about “Seasons of change." In order to live the blessed life it is so important to understand that all things move in seasons. In life there will be times where the seasons are slow, where improvement seems slow, where progress and success and victory seem slow. But when you get out of that season, all of a sudden you find yourself with supernatural increase and supernatural success. Supernatural victory starts coming your way.

You see, God always moves life through the seasons so that we can reach our full potential that He has given to us. Understanding that a slow season doesn’t last forever and that a slow season eventually always comes to an end, and keeping enthusiastic about the next season of harvest that’s coming, is one of the keys to living the blessed life.

Let’s take a look at some of these World Scriptures today:

We’re going to look at Judaism-Christianity, Psalm 102: 25-27. Let’s read that together,

“Of old thou didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of thy hands... they will all wear out like a garment, thou changes them like raiment, and they pass away. But thou art the same.”

Again we see that everything that has been created by God, including the earth, this temporal world, is subject to change. They change like the seasons, like garments, the Psalms tell us.

Let’s take a look at Islam today, the Koran 55th Sutra. We’re going to read that together. Let’s all read that together,

“All that is on the earth will perish, but will abide forever the face of the Lord” (Qur’an 55: 26-27).

Again we see the temporal world is subject to change, subject to impermanence, subject to diminishing. But behind that, there is the face of the Eternal. There is something that is unchanging.

Let’s take a look at Buddhism today. This is the Diamond Sutra, 32nd verse. We’ll read that together,

“By detachment from appearances abide in Real Truth. So I tell you, thus shall you think of all this fleeting world, a star at dawn, a bubble in a stream, a flash of lightning in a summer cloud, a flickering lamp, a phantom, a dream”.

Once again we see that in Buddhism one of the key teachings is impermanence, the notion that everything is subject to change and that our lives are like a fleeting star, or a passing bubble in the stream, etc.

Let’s center on True Parents’ words. This is the 66th book page 181. Let’s read it together,

“If we look at the whole year, we can see that together with the seasons everything else is also changing. Therefore not only nature has the potential to change, but everything else, too. Even in one day we can see something similar to the change of the seasons."

Once again we understand that everything is subject to change in this temporal world.

But brothers and sisters, let us remember that not all seasons are harvest seasons. When we live our life we would like to have the continual success and the continual fruition, the continual blessings and continual abundance. But you see, life does not work out that way, and God does not prepare us in that fashion. Not all seasons are harvest seasons. You see, just like a seed, there are planting seasons, and then the seed needs to be nurtured. It needs to have time to germinate and to spread its roots down, and then it needs to mature, and then it’s ready for harvest. In other words, it has to go through the respective seasons in order for it to reach its full potential.

And if we get anxious and we get frustrated and try to go against nature and harvest ungerminated plants or immature crops, what we will get are crops that are inedible. They taste horrible, and they are totally not nutritious. They haven’t reached their full potential. You see, in order for the crop to reach its full potential, it has to go through the different stages that lead up to harvest. And in order for that crop to have fruition in that season of harvest, patience and faith must be there. See, one must believe and know that after the crop goes through the necessary seasons that it will, without a doubt, bloom and ripen into that beautiful harvest.

See, it’s the same in our lives. When we are in a growth season, we can’t blame God or others for not having a harvest season. See, this only prolongs the harvest season, or jinxes it, kind of curses the harvest season that God is preparing for us. The more we say things like, “Oh, this is all my luck! I always get the bad fortune. I knew it would happen to me like this!” the more we do that, the more we are showing God that we are not ready to receive His blessing, that we are not ready to receive His harvest.

But if we turn it around and we start thinking in a different way, we start thanking Him for planting us, “God, You planted us. I may not be in a harvest season now, but I am in a planting season. I’ve been planted. Thank You, God! You see I’m germinating right now. I’m putting my roots down. I’m being nourished. I’m growing through the season. Thank You, God, for letting me grow in the season.”

See, when we show this kind of strength and this kind of fortitude, God is already getting ready to bless us. His hands are already getting tickly. He wants to start blessing us. He knows we are mature enough to start actualizing, receiving those blessings.

There was once a story that I heard about a rich man who approached his master. He approached the master and said, “Master, please write down something for me, that will encourage the prosperity, fortune, and happiness of my family and my descendants to come. And this would be something that the family would cherish for generations and generations." On a large piece of paper, that master wrote the following phrase, “Father dies, son dies, and grandson dies." The rich man was so angry, so angry, “Why are you writing me something like this? I asked you to write something down that would give me happiness and prosperity for my descendants. Why do you write something so depressing, Master?”

And the master replied like this, “If your son died before you this would bring unbearable grief to your family. If your grandson should die before your son, this also would bring tremendous sorrow and misfortune to your family. If your family, generation after generation, passes away in the order that I have written, this shows happiness and prosperity to your family!” (Applause) Oh! You like that one! The master spoke.

You see, all seasons happen naturally. Sometimes we don’t realize that naturalness is the greatest blessing. The winter is a natural season, and that is actually a blessing. Through this natural flow blessings and prosperity come in the harvest season. We know that after winter always spring will come.

If we are enduring a winter right now, we’ve got to quit jinxing ourselves by saying, “It’s never going to get any better. I am over now. Oh! My friend told me I’m over now!” We have to stop believing those things, and we have to start believing in a different way. We have to start saying, “God is preparing my spring. God is preparing a new season for me. I may be in a growth season now, I may be in a planting season now, but God is going to preserve a harvest season for me; He is preparing that for me.”

You see, when Joshua and Caleb led the Israelites into the land of Canaan, God told them in the Biblical story to circle the walls of Jericho. He said, “Do it seven times." If you’ve been around Jericho, it’s kind of big. It’s not like this sanctuary where you can do seven rounds in maybe a couple of minutes. Jericho! It’s going to take you at least seven hours to do seven rounds around that city, OK?

And then, as the Biblical story says, after circling the city seven times they were supposed to shout a holy shout, and that holy shout was supposed to make the walls crumble.

And that’s how they entered into the land of Canaan. And notice, by circling and having faith, but then by expressing and declaring that faith, shouting for the Lord’s promise, the walls came down with the expression of that faith. You see, they had to express it, they had to declare it; this shout had the holy power in it. It had the declaration power to shake the foundations of what Jericho had become. It had become a fortress.

You see, in life, brothers and sisters, it’s the same thing. We have to remain faithful to God’s promise when we are circling around our Jerichos, our obstacles, our circumstances. And you think about how the Israelites may have doubted God or thought, “This is crazy! It’s not going to work. We are circling this thing for 3 hours. There’s no way this thing is going to work 4 hours later. I don’t know what Joshua and Caleb are thinking. This is not going to happen. We’re going to shout. We see these walls; they’re so hard and big. There is no way these things are going to come tumbling down!”

And before they entered the land of Canaan, before they went there, they were already scared, “There’re giants in there!” But now as they’re walking around the walls, think about how much more intimidating that is! They can feel the presence of those giants inside the walls of Jericho. Maybe the giants were up on the wall, shouting and screaming and throwing rocks at them. That’s even more scary!

And now I want you to just imagine how long each round must have felt. Each round took maybe an hour to do, an hour and a half, but think about how mentally taxing that must have been to keep concentrating on the Lord’s promise, to keep concentrating on the promise that God had given, “It’s going to be a better day.” Think about how hard that must have been walking around this city, with violent people up on the wall, with giants throwing stones.

You see, they had to concentrate; they had to remind themselves, “You know what? God is bigger than this problem. He is bigger than Canaan; He is bigger than these giants that are inside it. He is bigger than my challenge." And then they had to practice believing it. They had to believe it for the rounds, rounds that they made around the city, and then on the 7th round they declared it. They said it after having believed, and they shouted. And this faith brought down the walls, the story says.

And this kind of power, this kind of holy power, the power that we have when we truly believe and we truly declare, this is the same power that allowed the Israelites to have those supernatural miracles. It has the same supernatural, miraculous power when we use it in our own life that God is preparing for us. And see, if God could do it for THEM, He can surely do it for US, and this is one of the things to remember.

You know, whenever we do interviews the reporters ask me this question -- they know I shaved my head, when I studied Buddhism, when I was studying religions, etc -- so they always ask me, “What appealed to you about Buddhism? You come from a Protestant Christian background -- you know Unification tradition is from a Protestant background -- you studied at a Catholic university for two years, and then you studied Buddhism. What appealed to you about Buddhism?”

And I have a very simple answer, because it’s the true answer. I tell them that the Buddhist teaching that truly helped me was the teaching of impermanence, that change is natural and a normal course of existence. You see, we all grow old and we all die one day, and this is natural. Understanding this is not like a pessimistic view, not a depressing, negative worldview. It’s actually quite liberating; it’s actually quite freeing. Because one realizes how short and actually how precious the life we have is. One can go at any second, and if one really, truly understands and is enlightened to this truth of impermanence, then it compels one to try to be the best, not yesterday, not tomorrow, but every day, today.

I struggled so much when Young Jin hyung passed away. This was a winter season for me, a big winter season. And in this period I inherited his books. He was studying at Columbia, and he was studying Asian religions and I started reading those books. And by radically accepting the truth of impermanence, the truth that everything changes, and that we all pass away one day, and realizing that I, too, will die one day, I felt compelled to find deeper meaning in my life. I felt compelled to train myself to find deeper meaning.

Realizing that I could die at any time helped me to appreciate the value of a single breath of air -- when we are meditating, we focus on the breath -- the value of my wife, of spending time with her, the value of my children, of being able to train and spend time together, the value of friends that I have around me, trustable friends. Once I started shifting this worldview, the annoying things like the kids crying and complaining, “I don’t want to go to school! I don’t want to do this! Don’t change my diaper!” all these kinds of things, became the sounds of life, beautiful sounds.

Traffic and other annoyances -- I did drive from Boston to New York all the time -- traffic was so annoying, frustrating. Getting into Boston you get tons of traffic. And this used to cause me tremendous stress, frustration and anger. But then all of a sudden, once I understood the notion of impermanence, once I understood how precious actually this life is, the traffic became quite a blessing.

If you ever get stuck in traffic the next time, I would like you to practice this one exercise. When you are in traffic the next time, look up in front of you. You’ll see all these cars. I’m sure you understand that. But then look more closely. You’ll notice that each car is a beautiful little face that’s smiling at you. You’ll see the little tail lights as the eyes, you’ll see the little bumpers as a smiley face. And all of them are different. Every single car has a different happy face, and they are encouraging you as you are in traffic, ”Don’t get angry, you don’t need to. Don’t get frustrated, you don’t need to. You are alive. See, my happy face is telling you that." Try that the next time you are in traffic.

See, once this shift occurred in my mind, once I understood the nature of impermanence, the preciousness of life, then slowly things started to change. Slowly this winter season started to give rise to a spring season, and a new hope began to emerge in my heart. You see, instead of remaining dark, cold, angry and bitter at life and bitter at God for stealing my brother, or whatever, accepting impermanence let me be grateful for life, and let me be grateful for the time I HAD with Young Jin hyung -- that was 21 years -- grateful for all the great teachings he gave me, the memories he taught me, grateful for all the tough times and the good times we had together.

By accepting impermanence I became grateful, and by becoming grateful I stopped trying to blame somebody else for my pain. When I did that I learned to let go. When I learned to let go, I became free. This freed me from the suffering, and now this winter season was not so much winter any more.

I was now free to discover the preciousness of life, free to discover the preciousness of the people that I lived with and maybe took for granted, too, the preciousness of this once in a lifetime chance to live. And I can testify that God did supernaturally change that winter season. He changed my season.

When I started thinking and declaring differently, when I was walking around Jericho, I had to start concentrating, I had to start thinking differently, declaring differently.

And this really reminds me of a story that True Father experienced. When he was crossing the 38th parallel -- this was decades ago -- Father was escaping for his life, he was fleeing from North Korea. He’s been imprisoned multiple times there because of no freedom of religion. As Father was now crossing the 38th parallel, he cannot take too many supplies because he has to bring one of his disciples. And he decides to bring the disciple; he decides to pull the disciple on a bicycle across the parallel where it’s flat. But as you know of the Korean landscape and geography, it’s so mountainous, it is so mountainous! It’s not like near New York City or something like that. It’s extremely mountainous.

And so when Father had to cross the big mountains in Korea, on his way down to the South, then he had to give this guy a piggyback ride. He actually had to carry this man through the different places. I love what Father said here. Think about him in this situation. He’s been persecuted, he’s been chased out. He could think God had left him. He could think, “It’s all over!” He could say, “Oh! Just my luck! Another winter season. I have to carry this fool on my back! “He could be thinking like that, but Father chose to think in a different way. He said, “As I hold you, I hold humanity.” I love that! He said, “As I hold you on my back, and I carry you on top of the mountains, I carry with me humanity.” I love that! He decided to be truly a victor and not a victim in that stage.

And that man promised Father, “Father, I will never leave you. I’m going to be with you to the end. I’m going to stick with you through thick and thin. I will be there when you pass to the spiritual world. I will never betray you!” This is what the man promised to Father. Of course, during the course of life, the man did leave Father. He did end up leaving Father. And Father spoke about this, how much pain he felt. How much betrayal he felt from the person that he actually suffered for, physically endured for, who promised him out of his own mouth, that he would never leave him. He betrayed Father.

How painful that was! But once again, Father decided to use this winter and to see it in another way, to see it as a natural process that God is training him for, to see his heart being able to become bigger, to understand God’s love and suffering more. And this is how Father overcame these obstacles. For me this is a very powerful example of how our thinking and how our practice begins to shape our life.

Brothers and sisters, what can we learn today? You know, there are seasons in our life. We must get through the seasons to get hardiness, to prepare for new growth. And if you want the harvest, you’ve got to go through the different seasons to get to that harvest. See, when we are in the seasons that are difficult, the seasons that are growth seasons or planting seasons, it may seem like they never end. “It just doesn’t end. I did it yesterday, I’m doing it today. It’s not going to end!”

But brothers and sisters, we have to understand, just as that master wrote, that things move in their natural course. It’s important that we don’t start jinxing our harvest that’s coming on its way, but start encouraging it to come, by declaring, “Yes, I am ready for it. Yes, I’m mature for it. Yes, I’m moving towards it.”

You see, check out the world today. You see the world? We were just talking to brothers and sisters in Kuri during the week -- you know a thousand members from Japan came here to listen to the Principle lectures -- and Kook Jin hyung now spoke about how the world is really in an economic collapse. “We see that in America with the mortgage collapse, we see that in Japan that has the biggest negative growth in all of Japan’s economic history,” he said. So the world is under economic collapse, swine flu is on the verge of this pandemic status -- this is what they’re saying -- religious warfare everywhere, nuclear weapons have the potential to destroy the world several times over, we all heard that a million times.

We are in a world winter, but God is preparing a new season for this world. He is preparing the new spring for this world. And I do believe that as we move to the growth stage of Cheon Bok Goong, and as we move to the perfection level world temple, I believe and I declare that Unification Church will be leading this season into the new spring. Let’s give it up for Unification Church, brothers and sisters! (Applause) God is preparing something special for us to do.

See, if we move forward like this, I do believe we will absolutely find ourselves with more victory, more illumination and more peace, and we will live that blessed life, inheriting the true love of God and being a blessing to this world.

If you receive it, let’s give it up for God and True Parents today! (Applause)

Ending of Hyung Jin Nim’s Final Meditation:

True Parents have blessed us to live the blessed life, to truly be able to inherit the true love of God, a true love that is selfless, that exists for the sake of others, and that can bring even our worst enemy to natural subjugation. Let us become inheritors of that true love and become greater blessings to this world.

Hyung Jin Nim’s final prayer:

Heavenly Father, True Parents, thank You so much for bringing us here today. Father, we understand that in the age of liberation You have done an incredible thing, and True Parents have liberated You from your thousands of years of loneliness. Father, we know that many religions and many ideologies have seen You as the almighty, all powerful deity, who has all power and control, who can do all things, who’s created all the universe. Father, we have understood that through the courses of time.

But Father, True Parents have enlightened us to a new realization, that is the fact that, Father, although You may have been powerful, You have been completely alone. Thousands and millions of fans, but no one to share your heart! Father, we understand how important that is, and that that is your purpose in creating the whole existence.

Father, let us inherit this true love, Your true love which is Your essence and Your divinity. Let us inherit the true love that is selfless, and Father, that can bring our worst enemies to natural subjugation. Let us inherit that true love and, Father, we know that through that we will become your true object partners, and we will be able to truly receive and give joy and love back to You.

We thank You so much, Father. We hope that we may understand that all things are impermanent. Things in this temporal world change, but Father, Your love, Father, Your hope in us -- we realize today -- does not change. We thank You so much. We pray that we can remain mature in our planting seasons, and in our growing seasons, Father, and that we may always remain enthusiastic about our lives, as we press forward to our harvest seasons. Father, we know You are preparing them for us, and we know You are greater than any of our challenges that are facing us today.

Father we pray that if there are any Canaans, that are facing our brothers and sisters here today or those that are joining us via the internet from around the world, we pray that You may truly give them confidence this day. Let them know, Father, that You are with them, let them know that the Able spirits are with them, and Father, let us know that we WILL overcome, in True Parents’ names, we will.

And we pray this altogether, in the names of our central blessed families, together as one family, one unified Unification family, together as one. Aju!

Welcoming Remarks:
Yeon Ah Nim:

Welcome, brothers and sisters! Good afternoon, brothers and sisters!

It’s really great to see you. As you know, yesterday at Chung Pyung we had our HSA-UWC 55th Anniversary Celebration and rally to establish the Peace Parents UN. It’s a long time. And today, because of that, we have a lot of Continental Leaders and National Leaders at our service, so let us all give a warm applause to all the leaders who work very hard to restore Father’s nation. Thank you.

We are always honored to have all of you here in this sanctuary; and for those who are joining us via internet, wherever you are, we also welcome you as well. Welcome brothers, and welcome sisters.

Hyung Jin Nim:

Welcome brothers and sisters. For all those brothers and sisters who are joining us via the internet, I want you all to just turn back, and let's recognize them today. Let's say hi to them. They're from your Continents, all National Directors, a lot of our National Directors here and Continental Directors. We love you guys. (Congregation turns around and waves at the camera). Today is the Azalea Festival in Chung Pyung, so we came from Chung Pyung this morning, ran into Buddha's birthday at the temple, that we were invited to, and then we have to run back right after service. But, we're here, we're here.

Okay, we're going to start with Cheon Seong Gyeong, page 876 today,

"What kind of world is Heaven? It is not a world where people regard each other with animosity and jealousy, turning green with envy over another's fortune, or getting upset over someone else's happiness. One person’s success represents the success of the whole, one person's joy can be shared by the whole. Therefore, Heaven is a place where everyone can be pleased over any person’s happiness, and everyone can join in and rejoice when anyone rejoices."

Those are some beautiful words, brothers and sisters. You know, we come here from different nations. We may be leaders or something, but when we come before God, we are His children, all that goes away. And, it's so important, they call this principle empathetic joy. When we see a friend get a great break that God is giving him, then, instead of feeling, "Oh, he took my chance, now it's over for me," why don't we turn that around this week? Let's say, "You know what, that's fantastic. I'm going to be happy for him. I'm going to bless him! Because I know that if I bless him, God's going to bless me. He's waiting for it to happen.

It's so important brothers and sisters to live like that, in that victorious mind. What Father is talking about here is reminding us what kind of place Heaven is. It's a place where we truly are in the presence of people who DO want us to succeed, do want us to thrive, and are happy for us when we do. That's a beautiful place, because when we can be in that kind of place, there's some victory coming out of there. There's some joy and hope coming out of there; and those are the places that we want to be.

And, as it is in Heaven, we want to be able to create it on earth. Brothers and sisters, that's exactly the place where we're practicing. That's exactly the place for our community. That's the place for our church; and in our church we want to be able to exemplify this. We're not perfect at it, that's fine, but we can practice it, we can try it out. This week we can make a commitment, "You know what? I'm going to try it out this week, and see what happens. I tell you, God is going to bless you in a whole new way. If you believe it, let's give it up for True Parents!

Brothers and sisters, once again, when we come to service let's always remember, we're coming and entering into God's presence. When we do that, we want to come in with thankfulness and gratitude. But also, we want to come in with enthusiasm and joy for our lives. If we do that we create energy and power amongst us, the faithful, who are here. And when we leave this place, we do not only take OUR energy with us, but the energy of ALL the people here.

Brothers and sisters, I actively ask you to be involved today when the Two Rivers Choir is doing their thing and their sweating and shouting their songs of praise. Weren't they great yesterday at Chung Pyung? Let's give it up for them! They were fantastic yesterday!

When they're up there, it's not just concert time, and everybody turns their brain off and goes into meditation. I love meditation, okay, but when they come up there, brothers and sisters, they're inviting you to sing along. Read those words, "God, You reign in me, God I want You to reign, reign in me. Reign, let Your power reign. Come over my thoughts, the thoughts of defeat, the thoughts of 'I can't do it', the thoughts of 'I'm terrible'. The thoughts that maybe I'm not worth anything."

Let God come in and reign over your thoughts. Let Him tell you that you are precious. Let Him tell you that you have value. Let Him tell you that He has wanted to plan to be with you. He wanted to plan this whole situation, this whole life together. Let Him come in and reign over your thoughts, give you hope, give you strength, give you vitality.

See, when you do that, then you're living in the victorious mode. Then nothing is going to stop you. No archangel that comes against you will prosper. Nobody will survive in that environment as an enemy.

So, brothers and sisters, let's keep that in mind. I want to welcome you again to service. Let's give it all we have to God, so that truly we may be blessed this week and become greater blessings to this world. Thank you so much, welcome.

Yeon Ah Nim’s Message:

We actually want our children to be proud Unification Church members. They go out to school, and everyday have a chance to say they are Unification Church members. They proudly say, "I'm a Unification Church member." But sometimes they face people who look down on them or discriminate against them, just because they are a Unification Church member. A couple of weeks ago my second son shared with me, that he got made fun of because he is a Unification Church member. At school he was made fun of, just because he is a Unification Church member and grandson of True Parents.

So, I am concerned a lot, and I asked Hyung Jin Nim his opinion about this matter; and Hyung Jin Nim said, "It's not a very simple matter, and it's something that we, as a new religion, have to continuously work on and improve to be a good religion, and that's the way we will change that into process." But he said that whenever that negativity comes up, teach our children to say to them this: "We are living in Korea, which is a democratic country, and we have freedom of religion, and as I respect YOUR religion, please respect MY choice of religion."

And, I taught this to my children one night, and I explained, "Some people misunderstand True Parents and our religion, so they might say a negative comment to you, but you know what? You can say this!" You might think this sentence is pretty long, but actually they can do that. And as I teach I can see this. I can see that many of our young proud Unification Church members can say this. Can you imagine, they can say this to those negative people? Can you imagine that? Let’s give a big applause for our future young proud Unification Church members' generation.

As I taught this to my children, I realized that this is even helpful for me. It’s helpful for those grown up Unification Church members as well. Sometimes, when we face negativity, we’re sometimes paralyzed and we don’t know what to say. So, from now on, I know what to say, "I am living in a democratic country. I have freedom of religion; and please, respect my choice of religion." You know what to say from now on, right? Yes. We go with this confidence. And as the sons and daughters of True Parents we’re going to inherit God’s true love and live with Him, and we will even become sons and daughters of True Parents and Heavenly Father, who can even liberate True Parents' heart. Aju.

Prayer by Rev. Michael Brazil:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with deep gratitude and humility, as Your sons and daughters, thanking You for loving us so deeply, even at times when we may not be worthy. But we know that You are always there, showering Your love, Your truth, Your grace, upon us. We want to, again, thank You so deeply. As we heard earlier, we really want to allow You to reign in us, to allow You to live through us, so that we follow Your example of truth and love. And we know that in doing that we will bring You great joy and great joy to others, and we know You will bring us great joy as well.

We thank You for our brothers and sisters who are with us here today from around the world. We thank the leaders who have come from a long distance to join us; and we thank our brothers and sister who are watching via the internet. Our Heavenly Father, may You truly bless them and guide them, that they may receive Your heart, Your love, and Your truth through this service. We really want to invite You; we really want to welcome You here. We want to open our hearts wide, so that You can pour forth into us, like the Niagara Falls, so that You can be with us, empower us, strengthen us, open our hearts, to hear Your love, Your truth, Your word, today, so that, when we leave, we are closer to You, we are even more powerful, so that, when we go forth this week ahead, we truly can be a greater reflection of You. We again thank You so deeply, and we humbly offer all this to You, in the names of our brothers and sisters, our blessed brothers and sisters from around the world, Aju.

Remarks about Prayer by Hyung Jin Nim:

Thank you, brothers and sisters. Brothers and sisters, it’s now time to strengthen and express gratitude to what we call our Abel angels. Those are the people in our spirit world who passed early, maybe your brother, maybe your parents, maybe your grandparents, but when you think of that person, you know that person is fighting for you, that person is protecting you.

For me that is my brother Young Jin Hyung. I know he’s with me every single day, and I lean on him, I lean on that friendship for help and comfort a lot. You know, Father always said that when he prays to God, he doesn’t pray to request, he prays to console. But there are times in our life, when we DO need help, when we do have to lean on friendships. And, brothers and sisters, I want to try to remember today. Let us all remember those Abel angels in our life. They are definitely with us. They are with you, they’re helping you through, and you can lean on them for comfort.

Brothers and sisters, I want to take this time in prayer, to pray for that Abel angel that’s in your heart. You don’t have to tell anyone who it is. You know who it is. Let’s pray for that brother or sister, that parent, that grandparent. Let’s give them strength, and let’s thank them for the work that they’ve been doing with us. Let’s take this time for prayer.

Interesting Story by Hyung Jin Nim:

You know, before we start the service, the speech, we like to start with something a little bit interesting.

I heard a story about little Rachel. She was in the back of the class, a kindergarten class. She was in the back of the classroom drawing something. The teacher wanted the children to participate and pay attention; but little Rachael was very busy back there. So the teacher went over there and said, “Well, Rachel, what are you doing back there?” And Rachel said, “I’m drawing.” The teacher said, “What are you drawing in class time?” Little Rachel said, “I’m drawing God.” The teacher said to Rachel, “Well, Rachel, nobody knows what God looks like. You can’t draw Him.” Little Rachel said, “Well, they will know in about a minute."

True Parents' Declaration:

Right hand up, left hand over our heart. These are my True Parents, the Eternal King and Queen of Peace, and Liberators of God’s heart. They have saved me from my past. They have blessed my future, and they give me true love, forgiveness and happiness today; and I choose to receive it. My mind is awake. My heart is open wide, and from this moment I change forever. In my name, Aju. Thank you.

Main Sermon by Hyung Jin Nim:

Brothers and sisters, I want to talk to you today about true friendships. Friends are probably some of the most important people that we will meet during our life. And especially, if we are going to live the blessed life, it is so important that we stay open to whom truly God is sending into our lives to be our friends. You know, good friends encourage us. Good friends give us guidance. They comfort and believe in us, and most importantly, good friends share our purpose.

There are times in our life when we’ll actually have to let go of some friends to meet the new friends that God is preparing for us. If we don’t meet those new friends, the destiny and the new victories that He is preparing, will not come to pass.

Some of those times can be difficult, even frightening at times, but it’s important to have strength, to know that when you let go of certain friends and you start moving on in your own life and in your career, God is always preparing other people, other friends that you will absolutely need to succeed in the way that He wants you to do. Having the right friends around you to share your purpose is absolutely one of the keys to living the blessed life.

Let’s take a look at some of the scriptures today. In Christianity let's look at John 15:13, a very famous quote. Let’s read that together.

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lays down his life for his friends.”

A truly profound love that can sacrifice oneself for friendship. We can here see the power of friendship that Jesus spoke about.

Let’s take a look at Islam today. In the Koran Sutra 9...let’s read that together?

“And the believers, men and women, are friends, protecting one another. They enjoy the right and forbid the wrong; and they establish worship, and they pay the poor and obey God and His messenger.”

Once again, we see the community of the believers, of the faithful, as being friends protecting each other, and actually helping each other to walk the path of right and to get beyond bad habits, negative habits.

Let’s take a look at Confucianism today. This is the Book of Changes. Let’s read that together:

“When two people are at one in their inmost hearts, they shatter even the strength of iron or bronze.”

The power of friendship, joined in common purpose, is stronger than iron or steel or bronze.

Let’s take a look at True Parents’ quote today. This is from speech volume 172. Let’s read it together.

“Who can become the truest friend among them? The plain truth is that the friend who would like to live for others in the spirit of self-sacrificing, should be the truest friend. He doesn’t want to live for his own interest, but gives priority to others and to his friends' interests. He who is willing to live his life for others, from his youthful days through later years must be the true friend of friends."

When we are young, we many times try to be benevolent to our friends, and a lot of times at that young age our young friends take advantage of that. “Oh, you’re such a good guy. Just give me another piece of that candy, OK?” They do that. But, it’s such a blessing, if we, as we get older, continue that practice of benevolence, if we are able to really think of our friend’s interests and have that be returned back to us. If we, as we grow, have those kinds of mature friends and meet the people that God wants us to meet, those are the most powerful relationships that we can ever have.

You know, Augustine talked about this. Augustine, of course, was one of the most influential Christian theologians in all of history. His writings about the City of God, the Confessions, etc., they shaped Western medieval world view, they shaped world literature, etc.

Augustine was born in the city of Thagaste to a Catholic mother named Monica. He was educated in North Africa, but he resisted his mother's pleas to become a Christian. He lived as a pagan intellectual, and he became a Manichean. Later he eventually came back around full circle, and converted to Christianity, eventually becoming a Bishop, etc.

He spoke about one of his friends that he met, Ambrose. He was actually baptized by him. And when he wrote his Confessions, he talked about how Ambrose made him understand the trueness of friendship, that friendship is connected in purpose and connected in faith. And that is where the trueness of friendship can be found.

Let’s also take a look at True Parents' words as we see this. Father asks us, “Who is the true friend? He is a man who welcomes you gladly, who receives you warmly, the opposite of the average person's mind today.” Very interesting to know, when Augustine first met Ambrose, the very reason Augustine came into his teaching was, because Ambrose was openly warm to him, openly invited him in to teach him and took him in as a son.

In the Confessions, Augustine actually writes about a previous friend that he had. He grew up with this friend. He did all sorts of things with him. They were really close friends. This friend eventually contracts an illness that results in very violent fevers. This friend is baptized in the Catholic tradition, and he gets better temporarily, and then he suddenly dies. So Augustine at this moment in his life faces his mortality. He’s not a Christian yet. He hasn’t taken the step of faith yet. He faces mortality, and he loses all faith in life. He says in one quotation in the Confessions, ”I was tired of living and extremely frightened of dying.” He lost all energy to live on. He goes on travel to Carthage, to Rome, and eventually to Milan, where he met Ambrose, that one person, who, when he has nothing left, when he is giving up on his life, invites him in as a true friend, as Father says, in the quote that we just read, "the person who gladly receives you, receives you warmly." That was the very reason -- Augustine writes -- that he took to Ambrose, eventually being inspired by Ambrose’s way of living and the Christian life, and eventually becoming baptized by him and staying under his tutelage. Augustine, once again, identified true friendship as purpose oriented, where true friends are connected in heart, connected in Christ -- for him in Christ -- and connected in faith.

Brothers and sisters, in our life, as we talked earlier, God will sometimes take people away from us, just like he did for Augustine. He took away that very close friend that he grew up with, that person that he depended on, that he always leaned on for support and comfort. But God didn’t do that to punish Augustine or to make him have a more difficult life. God did that so that Augustine could move on to different areas. He moved onto Carthage and Rome and Milan. And God helped him meet a new friend that took him in warmly, Ambrose. That person shaped Augustine, that person made Augustine into the person that he became and allowed Augustine to truly become fruitful in all his potential and to be able to influence history in the way that he did.

Sometimes in our life someone that we are very dependant on has to move on, has to move away, sometimes even passes away. Sometimes WE may actually move to a different country, or a different school, and this may cause us to have to let go of a certain friendship that we rely upon greatly.

But, brothers and sisters, it is so important to realize that God is working to raise you. He is not sending you on your path alone. He is working to have us raised. He has already planned the people that you are supposed to meet. He is already raising them up, too, so that when you do meet, you will become that much more helpful to one another. That is one of the most important things that we can see in Augustine’s life.

And if we, in our own lives, if we are not willing to obey this change, and we try to resist that change, and maybe because of fear say, “Oh, I don’t want to turn my back on these friends. They will make fun of me and say that I’m a traitor.” Maybe we are scared of that. But at times in our life God asks us to be brave and courageous, to trust Him above human beings, to trust His guidance. And many times in our own lives we will have to question whether or not the people that we are around are actually bringing us to the highest potential that God wants us to be at.

You know, one of the greatest scientist said, “If we are ALWAYS at the top of our friend group, if we are always giving advice, then you know very clearly that God is asking you to move and find new friends.” You must never be at a state in your life where you are only the one who is always giving the wisdom and the advice. Surround yourself with people who give YOU wisdom, who give you mentoring, who give you strength. This is one of the most important types of friendships.

In doing ministry, this is so important for US, because we are in a situation where we do talk to a lot of people, where people rely on us for guidance. But it would be very incorrect to say that we don’t rely on anyone else for guidance. I have a lot of brothers and sisters; Kook Jin Nim is one of them. He is one of my great mentors, a person who, when I struggle, and when I have to ask him some questions, he is always there to lend an ear, to help me problem solve.

My sister Sun Jin nuna is always there to encourage me. So, whether we recognize it or not in our life, to have those kinds of friends is absolutely one of the most critical things for understanding and living the blessed life.

When we moved from America to Korea, this was a big shift. I relied on a lot of friendships in America. When I studied at Harvard, I stayed with one of our brothers. He was a New Testament scholar, a great friend of mine from when I was very young. He is in his 50s, but he studied the New Testament. So when I studied religions, we had some great conversations. He really helped me in my understanding of Christian theology, etc. He really became a mentor in my studies. Of course, I studied Buddhism at the same time, so we had some very interesting inter-religious discussions. But then at some point, he started a business. So he had to move on, and he was getting very busy. At that time Matt was also there. We saw Matt over there working in the business as well. And then -- it is very interesting -- because as that friend moved on and was not as prominent, all of a sudden God brought another friend into my life.

All of a sudden I got an email one day saying that there was a Tibetan monk that was trying to find a place to stay. And since I went back on the weekends I wrote him an email saying, "Since I go back on the weekends you can stay with me.” And his mother was there, too. So I wrote, "You guys can stay with me and take care of the place when I am going back and forth between New York and Cambridge."

Very interesting, this was not just a coincidence. When we first met, we realized that actually we had met before in some form. I’m not talking about reincarnation here! I’m talking about when just a year ago the monk Lamawangdo, as he told me, was on the street in Boston. He was walking down the street, and a Japanese lady walked up to him and invited him to a conference given by Father Moon, which happened to be in Boston.

So he attended that conference, he heard Father speak, about a year ago. He said that he was very moved by that. In that very same year I had the privilege of meeting the Dalai Lama at Christmas time. I had spent a little bit time with him in Daramshala.

And so, when we met and actually exchanged our stories, we realized: My God, we actually, just in the last year, had met both of the heads of our religions. And, my God, what a coincidence! What kind of probability could set that up, so that we meet, out of all the millions of places in the world, that we meet at Cambridge, and that we just had those connections, just within the last year?

I had a great friendship with him. He’s a wonderful guy. His mom is such a wonderful, dear lady. They make Tibetan butter tea. I can’t have it everyday, it’s really heavy. We were really close and had a lot of sharing. They are very, very wonderful people. Whenever we had friends coming over, other monk friends coming over, other priest friends coming over, we had some great conversations with them.

But as I moved to Korea -- I graduated and moved to Korea -- then those friendships became less prominent. I found myself here in Korea in 2006, because Father asked me to stay. So here I was in Korea, basically all alone. My wife was still finishing her studies in the United States, and also my children were still in the States. And so God was asking me to remain faithful to Him and to understand that He is going to bring other mentors and other friends that are going to help me along my path.

And it just so happened that at that time -- already about a year ago -- Kook Jin hyung just happened to come and be in Korea. You understand that the age difference between myself and Kook Jin hyung is about nine years. That has been quite a big gap. We have a lot of brothers and sisters in between us. We have a big family, as you all know. And Kook Jin hyung was here, and he was fighting a huge battle in our movement, to bring in professionalism and transparency and honesty.

The Tong-il group at that time was bankrupt. As you all know, Kook Jin hyung brought that group from a $100 million loss per year to a $50 million profit, within 3 years. That’s an incredible turnaround. But he was being very opposed, a lot of opposition.

Actually there were demonstrations -- many members don't know this -- outside the Foundation building. For about two months they were demonstrating, because one of the companies was totally unprofitable -- the professionals analyzed that it was unsolvable -- and had to be sold off. Actually members were out there demonstrating, telling Kook Jin hyung, ”Go home!" And so many leaders were very opposed to the idea of transparency; because transparency shows any losses and any financial weakness. It shows how money and church finances have been managed.

So there was a lot of opposition when Kook Jin hyung came and started this process, this huge revolutionary change in our movement. And I remember, when I first got here we started having these wonderful conversations. You know, at that time I was teaching World Religions and also doing some courses on mediation practice in Chung Pyung, and we ended up talking to each other a lot.

For about 7 years we actually did not get together, talk together. I was studying at Harvard. I was finishing my undergrad there, plus finishing my Masters degree there. So I was up there for a good 6 or 7 years. So it had been quite a while since I had seen Kook Jin hyung. And even though we had spent a lot of time together before that, I was just a college kid, at this level of maturity. So it had really been 7 years that we weren’t able to spend time together. And as we talked, and as we shared, we noticed that actually we had a lot in common. We realized that we didn’t agree with the direction of the movement. We saw all these different groups, trying to come to power and literally become tyrants, dictators, of the movement and rule the movement with absolute rule. And this was very draining to see, it was very draining to see. Even True Parents, how miserable they were in that kind of situation!

We were in a situation where members had absolutely no voting power, no rights, and no voting power. There were endless expensive mobilizations, as you all recall. Always, constant, constant, constant. And all the while the members would have to just blindly follow. We were not happy with this at all. Of course, we saw this in the results as well, as a weakening church. In the 1970s we had 16,000 members, but by 2005 our church in Korea had 14,000 members, half of which were Japanese and International couples. So, in essence, we have a very small Korean congregation.

We saw church attendance dropping, tithing dropping, registration dropping, for the last 30 years, continuously. But those who stayed in the church -- we also found this very disheartening -- those who stayed in the church would say, “I don’t want to witness. I don’t want to bring people into this misery. I don’t want to witness!” I had people telling me this all the time. It was shocking, but it was very true.

You know, at that time, when we talked, we realized, “No, no, no, this can’t be the way." Father had already announced the Age of the Liberation and Complete Release, and this was very far from that vision.

So we decided that we wanted a more empowered church, a more liberated church, a church where really members could be proud of their faith, where society could look differently at our church, where we could actually be relevant in society, not just SAY we are relevant, but really ARE relevant in society.

Now, about a year and a half later, we do have a different church! We have a transparent financial management system here at the Headquarters church. We have KPI's -- I was explaining this to the national and continental directors yesterday -- KPI [Key Performance Indicators] that the Chaedan Group brought here for church management. These are essentially measuring membership's satisfaction: Are the members satisfied with their leaders on the ground, with their ministers on the ground?

We are not at the level, of course, where we could be in society, where society can truly be moved. We’re still very small in comparison to society, but we are changing in a great way. We are changing. We have elections now; we have elections to give membership voting power. We have elections that allow members to elevate women leaders into the leadership. We have 28 women leaders here at Headquarters Church, more women leaders than men leaders. That’s a big change in the church! That’s a great change. Let’s give it up for the women‘s age. We have tremendous change that is happening!

You know, even on Buddha’s birthday today there are all sorts of dignitaries out there, some people that we met before at VIP conferences, like Sege Il Bo conferences, wonderful people. And when we meet them again, they are very interested, “Unificationism? I’ve heard very good things about it. We are hearing about good articles, and we read your article the other day.” I had a Congress woman come up to me and say, “Oh, I wanted to meet you. I read some of your articles.” And so, there is a lot of good change that is happening. We’re not there yet, but we’re moving in that direction. That’s very important that we’re MOVING in that direction, that we are moving in the direction of the Age of Liberation and Complete Release.

What I realized after the experiences in the year and a half that we have been working together, is this, “My God, this could not have been set up in any other way!” If Kook Jin hyung was just being at home, operating his business, which is widely successful -- and is continuing to be even more successful now -- if he was just there in New York, doing his business, we would not be able to truly create this kind of substantial change. There is no way that I, with my own ability, could come here and make this kind of seed change that Kook Jin hyung and his team, the teams that we built, have made in terms of progressing the church forward.

And I say this because I want to always remain humble, and I want to give credit where credit is due. A lot of the members believe that it is because of MY leadership that many things are changing in the church; but I want to give credit where credit is due. It is very important for me to be honest and to say, "You know, Kook Jin hyung actually started this revolutionary change. He started by bringing professionalism into the church, bringing transparency, bringing accountability into the church, in a real way, organizationally."

And I realized that when two hearts are connected to a common purpose, and they are connected to liberating True Parents, then we WILL see good change. We actually experienced this in the last one and a half years. We’ve seen great media change. We’ve seen -- for the first time in 30 years -- an increase in church attendance, increase in church tithing, increase in church registration, for the first time in over 30 years. Let’s give it up for our Korean church, come on! That’s a very good thing!

And I want to share these words that Father said... and of course, of course, oh my goodness, Father’s best seller! I say it every week; I’m inspired by it every week. That’s a best seller, by the way! Brothers and sisters, for those who don’t know it: That’s a best seller!

Let’s take a look at this quote by True Father that he speaks upon. Let’s read that actually together. Okay, I’ll read it for you.

“If a friend was to be the best friend of yours, the relationship between you and he should never be broken. Even at the risk of your life, you could not break off relations with him. It is not because of sympathy, but because you are connected from the bottom of your heart in your purpose, which is a source of goodness. Any bond connected to the goodness in the original mind can never be broken,”

Father says.

And when I saw that quote, I realized, “Yes, that is my friendship with Kook Jin hyung. That is our friendship." But it is beyond that. I realized something else. After we started working together, we had so many people doubting, "True Children can’t work together. They have such A type personalities, they can’t get along well. There’s no way they’re going to last working together; they’re going to be fighting and tearing the church apart. That's what they will be doing." So, I actually had people coming up to me and saying, “You cannot trust Kook Jin Nim. You should not trust him. He’s trying to gain power over the church and rule the church. Hyung Jin Nim, you are very naive. All you do is meditate all the time. You’ve got to wake up. You have got to wake up to this, okay? Don’t be a fool!”

People said that he shouldn’t help with the church side. I had a leader come up to me and tell me that I had to trust that leader more than I trust Kook Jin hyung, telling me “Hyung Jin Nim, I want everybody to praise you and be chanting your name.” I said, “I never wanted that, I don't want it ever in my life. I never wanted that when I started, and I’m not going to want it until I die.”

So, I realized, wow, that a lot of people tried to work on my ego, and I realized this was wrong. If Kook Jin hyung was trying to be the dictator, he would never have supported me in ministry. He would never have supported any of this. If he would have the greed to take over the church, he would never support other True Children that are working now in roles of responsibility. If he wanted to be a tyrant in the church, he would see me as a competitor and would try to knock me off, get rid of me. If he wanted to be a tyrant, he would never promote transparency; he would never promote KPI's for members’ satisfaction, to check whether members are happy. He would never promote church growth or happier communities or elections for that matter. Why? Because all these things are not conducive to tyranny. You cannot rule in tyranny with elections, transparency and membership satisfaction checking. You can’t do it. It is simply impossible.

I look at the results, I look at the ACTUAL things that he does. I do not only listen to what people are trying to tell me, “Don’t listen to him; you’ve got to doubt him.” I am capable of making my own determinations, and I have determined that he is truly a saint, that he is truly living for the sake of the whole. Let’s give him a great applause! He has been working at the Chedan Foundation, making humongous changes. He has not taken ONE penny in salary from the Chedan. A lot of brothers and sisters don’t know this. He has been doing it totally as service work. So he has actually had to fly back and forth from Korea to America, to make sure his business stays healthy, so that he can keep a living wage. Because he doesn’t receive a penny from the Tong Il group. He’s doing it totally as public service. And that is somebody that I truly respect!

Sometimes, of course, I had the thought, "Maybe I’m not really leading the movement." Father put a crown on my head, and he said, "You have to be the leader of the movement." But maybe sometimes I feel that I’m not really leading this. It was Kook Jin hyung who really desired the change in the movement. He STARTED this revolution. But then I realized, “So what! So what! It’s not a question of whether I’m the one who is wearing a crown, or who is ordained by True Parents. That doesn’t matter! That is an ego trip! What’s more important is the question of whether or not Unification Church will be relevant. Whether Unification Church we grow and be substantial." That is what we are focusing on.

It really doesn’t matter whose credit it is. I always want to give credit to Kook Jin hyung, because I do believe he started a tremendous change. He started a truly liberating change that has now given new life to our movement: professionalism, transparency, accountability, fairness, etc. Because of his kind of leadership and his analysis and his ability to organizationally manage and lead and because of all that experience of 16 years as a CEO he’s been able to make huge changes and recommendations that True Father has approved. And because of those recommendations, I do see that the organization has become stronger.

Of course, I do believe I did my own part, but I don’t want to take full credit. No way! There’s no way. Even half credit, I don’t believe that I deserve it. Really, I am so grateful to that elder brother, because he truly is living for the public. He truly is living as a saint, as somebody who is truly living to see the happiness of the nation.

Father always said that his name would mean the nation of faith. He said that he would always establish the nation. That’s what Father said about Kook Jin hyung when he was born, that he would establish the nation. And when we see him and all the revolutionary changes and recommendations that he’s made to Father, and all of the great changes that have happened as a result of that, then we really do see, that, yes, he is the one that is really strengthening the nation of Cheon Il Guk. He really is strengthening our church.

And on the ministry side it is our role to really be able to allow people in the strengthened nation to find the purpose in their lives and deeper happiness. And this is why we try to focus solely on the spiritual side and allow the Chedan to work together with us to manage and do the financial transfer management, etc.. We do not try to do it all by ourselves, but try to work together at an excellent level.

We’re not perfect yet. We’re still improving; but I realized, understanding that friendship, that there was something even deeper. I was reading one day in the Principle on the purpose of returning resurrection. Here I read the paragraph, where according to the Principle of Creation it says,

“The growth of the human spirit requires life elements and vitality elements received through give and take action with the physical self. In essence, the spirits who have passed on can neither grow nor be resurrected apart from a physical self. By assisting people of faith, living on earth to fulfill their missions, the spirits in the spirit world may complete their missions at the same time.”

When I read this, something hit me very strongly. I realized that it’s not ONLY about me and Kook Jin hyung’s relationship. I realized something even more deep. That actually, in the last ten years, both of our lives have been completely flipped around, transformed, completely transformed. How has it been transformed? We lost our closest brother. We lost a brother that actually was the dearest to both of us. Kook Jin hyung raised Young Jin hyung. They had the same interests, the same personality. They loved computer games, and they loved studying, and they always did well in school. They are these kinds of guys; they loved the books. I was totally the opposite. I hated books, hated computer games. I liked playing outside, climbing trees, and running around in the forest. I hated that stuff.

So Kook Jin hyung and Young Jin hyung were so close.

They were always together; always playing video games, always D and D. It was just incredible. I could see them playing day and night. They would spend a whole day, and then spend a whole night playing this game where they are fighting each other, with these axis and allies. And I’m thinking, “Are they out of their minds? How can they do that all day and all night? I can’t even do it for 10 minutes, let alone all day and all night."

But I realized there was something even deeper in our relationship. When Young Jin hyung passed, actually Kook Jin hyung lost his closest friend in our family. He lost the brother that was the closest to him, most similar to him, the person he almost raised as a son. And when I lost Young Jin hyung, he was only one year above me. So even though we were different, we always worked together. We lived in the same rooms all the time; we were always so close. And I realized that when we lost him, we lost the same person.

But reading that chapter on returning resurrection I realized: "My God, by working together, as Cain and Abel, together, supporting each other, by working together for the public good, not for self ego trips, by working together for the public good -- what are we doing? We’re helping our brother Young hyung; we are helping our spirit brother fulfill HIS mission in the spirit world!" And by helping him fulfill his purpose of growing and working with us, I realized, "My God! This relationship is beyond my own choice. This is beyond coincidence. This is what God had wanted to happen, and through this process we are able to do something for Young Jin hyung, and we’re so grateful that that is possible."

You see, God didn’t leave us at that time. God allowed us to work together, truly respecting each other, understanding our strengths, understanding what I can do, and what I cannot do. Kook Jin hyung always says, “I can do certain things that you can’t; and you can do certain things that I can’t. That’s why when we come together we can do so much together.”

And we understand that Young Jin hyung is the person that really brought us together.

I always talk about Abel Angels, the people who have gone into the spirit world, but who are there with us, who are always there with us. And of course, we have many people in the spirit world, but we have an Abel Angel, and that’s the person who is so close to us. When you close your eyes, and you think about the people who have passed away in your life, then you know immediately who your Abel Angel is, who the person is who is looking after you, almost like a guardian angel, protecting you. And I know this is Young Jin hyung for me, and I know this is Young Jin hyung for Kook Jin hyung.

When I realized that, I realized that God is doing something more divine; He’s not only giving me a tremendous brother and a friend, He is giving me a Divine friendship. He is giving me a friendship that is crossing the boundaries, allowing even my brother in the spirit world to find great purpose and mission in helping us work united, and working together. And I feel that so many times. I feel that because of the love and the life of Young Jin hyung we are able to always have a deep sense of purpose when we work together. We have a great, deep sense of purpose and mission. We truly want to see the Unification movement succeed.

And there is no greater purpose, as Augustine spoke. True friends have the same purpose, and they are also connected in faith. And I really have found that again.

You know, brothers and sisters, in our own life, let us choose to trust in God. He prepares these kind of Divine friendships, if we keep our eyes opened. And we have to know that God always wants us to be the best. He wants us to be the greatest. He plans that for us.

Sometimes God can feel very big and vast, as if we can’t speak to Him. He is too busy with providential purposes, so that we can’t speak to Him. Brothers and sisters, during those times, you know who I lean on? I lean on my Abel Angel. I lean on the person that is right next to me, Young Jin hyung, who is right there. I always talk to him. I ask him, “What can I do? Give me strength. Help me this week. Help my children, Young Jin Hyung. I know you are always there for me."

Brothers and sisters, just always remember that God always prepares the people around us; not only in the physical world; but He also prepares friendships, Divine friendships, that are helping us from the spirit world. And we should take time, and we want to take time during service to acknowledge and recognize those friendships. There is no one who succeeds and is victorious without the help of others.

Brothers and sisters, if we can become these kind of friends for the glory and liberation of True Parents and acknowledge these kinds of friends who are around us, and the unseen friends who are around us as well, I do believe we will find ourselves with more victory, more illumination and more peace; and we will live that blessed life that God has blessed us to live, and be a great blessing to this world.

If you will receive it, let’s give it up for God and True Parents today.

Final Meditation:

Let’s gather our hearts and enter into our final meditation practice. Let us now enter into the Homeland meditation. Let’s close our eyes, and visualize, not this sanctuary, but let us visualize a beautiful meadow that we are walking upon. And slowly; take it slow, slowly, let’s walk slowly. Feel the soft grass supporting you. Feel each step. Each step is so precious. As we take a step, we see beautiful flowers bloom around our feet. As we look to our left, we will notice a beautiful stream that is meandering down. We can hear the sounds of that beautiful stream, we can hear God’s words of peace, and life, and change, and hope. As we look up to the sky, we can see the vast sky, limitless; we can hear the heart of God. We can hear His vastness and His limitless, abundant love for us.

As you look forward you can notice that True Parents are there, waiting for us. They are waiting for us to reach our destinies with them. Let us go before our True Parents and be seated before them. True Father with his right hand, True Mother with her left hand, places their hands atop our heads; and they anoint us, and they bless us.

They say to us, “May you inherit the true love of God,” and they bless us. Let us feel the power of that blessing move from the top of our head, through our entire body like a wave of energy, all the way to our feet. We can feel that blessing permeate our brain, our cells and our mind, our internal cells; all the cells of our body we can feel are being renewed.

If there are any cells in our mind, stressed, or tightened, or knotted with frustration; we see all that frustration melt away, as that wave of blessing passes right through us. Any sick cells in our body, any unhealthy cells, dark cells, receive total revival, brand new, new life.

We will notice, even in our spirit body, that our spirit body, if it had any dark regions, or places, that now, the entire spirit self is being illuminated in all directions, all directions. Completely healthy. As we receive this blessing, let us look up to True Parents smiling radiant, almost sun-like faces; and let us say to True Parents, “True Parents, I accept you as my True Parents, and I will inherit the true love of God.”

As we do that, let us breathe in deeply, in our hearts, let us say, “I am alive.” As we breathe out old life, in our heart, “Thank You.” As we breathe in new life, in our hearts let us say, “I am alive.” As we breathe out old life, in our hearts, let us say, “Thank You.” One more time, breathing in new life, “I am alive;” and as we breathe out old life, “Thank You.”

God and True Parents have blessed us to live the blessed life that is to inherit the true love of God; a love that is selfless, and can even bring the worst enemy to natural surrender; that kind of powerful love. When we inherit that, we will be greater blessings to our families, and our communities, and our society, our nation and our world. And we will truly bring joy to he who is always with us.

Final Prayer:

Brothers and sisters let us gather our hearts for our final prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank You so much for this day which You have blessed upon us. True Parents, we thank you for being with us today. Father, we pray that today we can renew ourselves in Your new life. We can renew ourselves in faith. Father, we can renew ourselves among brothers and sisters who believe, and are walking the path with us. Father, it is so hard to find friends that truly share Your purpose; to find friends who share faith, and belief and hope.

Brothers and sisters, we pray that we may be those kinds of friends for ourselves, and for all the people that we are connected with. Father, we know that we can never do things alone. We know that You have those wonderful Abel Angels that are with us, each and everyone of us; being protected and guided, being led in the right direction. We pray that You may bless those angels today. We pray that we may take time to remember those brothers and sisters today.

Thank You for these Divine friendships. Father, as we meet and nurture these friendships, we know that we will truly be able to substantialize and inherit Your true love, and be great blessings to this world. We thank You so much for this day, and we offer all the glory to You in our own names, as Central blessed families, as one.

Oceania Continental Directors

May 2009

A letter to our International President Rev Hyung Jin Nim Moon:

Dear Respected and Loved Elder Brother Hyung Jin Nim,

I have no words to express my deepest love and respect for you and the reform you are bringing to us all. From your words and spirit I feel nothing but God's Love and Truth. All members in Australia and Oceania feel the same way. I was in Korea at True Parents birthday and in Las Vegas and I was so moved by you and all the True Children.

I had the chance to be with Kook Jin Nim when he visited us on the tour and went for a walk with him when I was the Secretary General of Oceania. We talked for two hours. It was such a beautiful meeting I will not forget.

I am so sorry to express what I am about to because your standard of heart is so above mine and perhaps if I had your heart I would not be writing it. The fact is, however, that I feel impelled to write this to protect our region and its members and especially the second generation from what I see is something which goes completely against the spirit of transparency, accountability and fairness and the spirit of CIG that True Parents and you have promoted.

As I write this, I know that if gets back to the Continental Director of our region this could mean the end of my present mission. But I am beyond that now. I pray for the courage of Martin Luther at the eve of the reformation. "Here I stand". I do this for you because if this kind of situation continues it might, it will reflect on you and I never want that to happen.

I write this reflection in the hope that whoever among our international leadership can read it can begin to take action about a very serious situation in Oceania.

I was asked to become the Secretary General of UPF Oceania and work with our former Continental Director, Dr. Chung Sik Yong's as his assistant. I recently was asked to be the National leader of Australia Jan 2009 by our present Continental Director, Dr. Dong Woo Kim. I have been in leadership for a long time and I am personal friends and am in contact with many of our top western, Japanese and Korean leadership many of whom I have worked with in the states and in different countries of the world. I say this obviously not to toot my own horn but to say that what I am about to share is unfortunately a very common experience.

Reflection on the state of affairs in Oceania

Although many of us felt inspired to work with Dr. Yong our Continental Director in 2003 as True Father focused so much on the potential of Oceania, there have been so many self-created setbacks and self-inflicted wounds and disasters initiated by the present Korean leadership, in the last 5 years, that has affected especially in the relationship between Korean and Oceania leaders and members that our movement is seriously drowning in its own whirlpool. To add to this toxic mix, the financial devastation heaped upon this region by the poorly thought out and extremely risky financial investments of the former and current Continental Director has caused a mass exodus of the most talented leaders and members. In a region as small as ours, we cannot afford such an exodus and withdrawal. Morale has sunk to its lowest point and many of us are worried about the near future especially about our second generation and what they are going to inherit.

Many of my colleagues and I feel very disenchanted and dismotivated by the corporate culture created by the last three Continental Directors. We see it as inept, dictatorial, extremely self-centered and feudalistic leadership style. The result of years of such leadership and bad management has created a disempowered, disengaged membership that has become jaded, even cynical and which has distanced itself as much as possible from most activities that are constantly undermined by leaders who demand absolute obedience in a personal form to them, change things literally at whim and are never held accountable for disastrous decisions they make. This situation seems impossible to change from below or within without the support of our international headquarters.

Continental Directors look like CEOs that have no restraints or brakes on them from above whatsoever. Though we admire the new culture of transparency and accountability that you and the other True children are promoting, they don't seem to understand it, believe it or even want to pretend to practice it. Our current Continental Director said, at our HSA-UWC board meeting, derisively that this concept of "boards" deciding things is a western phenomena. He said: "We have boards in Korea but they have no power". We all shook our heads in disbelief. It is so clear to all of us that he sees boards as a necessary western evil but he does not intend to work by consensus. It has created a very uneasy feeling as you can imagine among us as he/we know he can change things as he wishes.

A case in point-Oceania dysfunction

Though I did not know the first Continental Director of Oceania personally, stories abound about his tantrums and persecution of members he saw as "enemies". He had his "spies" (members he recruited) that would report to him about everyone he didn't trust until they themselves were suspected of being enemies. He recklessly and spontaneously bought properties at a very high price (against the advice of most leaders) only to sell them at the lowest market price when they couldn't be maintained, financially devastating our region. Members had to fundraise en masse for two years straight to pay for the loss incurred.

A few years ago he was given a new mission by True Father which he refused to do (National Messiah of Lebanon) and stayed here in Sydney with his family doing all the things he warned members not to do. He doesn't attend Sunday Service, doesn't tithe and does not participate in any public activity. His life is the living perfect antithesis of all the sermons and guidance of his own sermons and ravings over the 15 years he was in power. This was the first Continental Director whose reign lasted 15 years. The members here were subjected to a horrible leader with no protection from above.

The dysfunction and illness of our leadership culture continued to the second Continental Director. An incredible ineptitude and callousness to members' hearts and paranoiac neuroses pervaded his reign. On the positive side, all were impressed that he woke up early and bowed 500 times! Many of us tried to follow his example. Later many of the leadership began to notice a "messiah complex" he had developed. He thought he could do no wrong. He would look at us and say "Do you know who you are sitting across at this very table? Do you know the value of the Continental Director. If you serve me like True Parents do you know what blessing will come to you and your family?"

The hubris was simply astounding. But we members were trained to pray for, to forgive, to give the benefit of the doubt towards someone like this. He saw this as weakness, perhaps. A cult of personality was enforced. (Here we go again). He would change members because of a dream he had about them. He would publically chastise members and humiliate them in front of others. Our leaders got together and told him that "this was enough" and pleaded with him not to do this. He continued. Who could we report to in those days? I did speak to Dr. Tom Walsh and he was aware but what could he do? Perhaps his own relationship with his CF was the same? That is how western members survived in this toxic soup. The situation was becoming unbearable. Even the faithful Japanese missionaries were tiring of his trips asking for money. No one knew where to turn.

I had to deal with Dr. Yong's brutal treatment of many national messiahs and national leaders that were not part of his "dream team" or personality cult. The National Messiah and National Leader that refused to play his weird game of personal worship were discredited and rumored about. I refused to play this game and so then eventually I was isolated and fell into his black book as well. It was painful to see how my fellow brothers and sisters allowed themselves to be intimidated to do this until they all without exception became victims of this dangerous game. It reminded me of the stories of abusive families where everyone is quiet as the abuser goes, one by one, after every member of the family.

Then everything hit the fan. He came up with a plan to "save our region" from financial disaster. He began to speak of a plan of investing in Japan and he promised a 5% month return. He directed all leaders to give $50,000 - $100,000 US dollars of their own personal money. We were all incredulous. First of all, we are church leaders and we are barely surviving. We didn't have $50,000! He said "All leaders in Korea have money, what kind of leaders are you?" (The gap of mindset was mind boggling). We were pressured to do it but luckily none of us except one poor soul had the money to invest. He pushed us to borrow the money from relatives and then ordered a large portion of the public money from True Father, meant to buy Peace Embassies in the islands, to be invested in this plan. I warned Dr. Walsh [Thomas G. Walsh] about this impending disaster and danger that would befall us but his advice was astoundingly disappointing: "First", he said "our movement is not a democracy. Whether we like this or not, this is a kingly system and the Continental Director is in that position in our region". He said "Let him do it and hopefully Dr. Yong will learn from his mistake".

"Second", Dr. Walsh said, "you could resign if your conscience will not allow you to support his policies". The irony that I might have to resign because the Continental Director was investing recklessly was shocking and disempowering, to say the least. How did our movement sink this low? The feeling of abandonment was strong. What kept me going was my wife (I thank God and True Parents for her!) some friends and colleagues. When I spoke about this to other Secretary Generals I realized they were all in a similar situation. Some even worse!

"Lastly", he said "I could report this all to Rev Kwak [Chung Hwan Kwak] but this may not go anywhere". Well that didn't seem like an option because the circle of unity between Rev Kwak and the Continental Directors was very tight. Rev Kwak himself thought Dr. Yong's idea was good, Dr. Yong told us, and he was thinking to invest himself and they were getting other Continental Directors getting involved in this new panacea. I could imagine, maybe Rev Kwak publicly criticizing our Continental Director chastising him and him knowing exactly where that info came from. I would then be fired and then who would stand up for our region? I am sure you will find if you ask member all over the world VERY similar stories. Some times worse. I have lived in America, Russia, Ecuador, New Zealand and now Australia. It is the same story with different characters playing the lead roles.

The end of the story is not a happy one. Dr. Yong lost at total of 4.5 million dollars. Some was from the monies destined for Peace Embassies, some from one western leader who gave his entire inheritance and the rest from Japanese missionaries assigned to Oceania. When it all hit the fan, Dr. Yong was changed to Asia. He was warned by all of us about what the consequences would be of the "investment" (Ponzi scheme) he was making but he did it anyway ignoring all advice and warnings from his closest circle of leaders of which I was the closest.

That became my first window into the pervasiveness of the internal dysfunction of our region and our movement. After his big mistake was disclosed publically he was "forgiven" and still kept in his position. Maybe "forgiven" is not the right word. We heard that Kook Jin Nim was so angry about all this when it was reported by Dr. Kim but he felt he couldn't fire him because there were no policies and guidelines in place before hand by which he could be judged. That is true and that has been the problem. But one must wonder why do we keep such inept, dysfunctional people in such positions of unchecked power? How long will this system go on? The idea of keeping them to 2103 is unbearable and dangerous.

Meanwhile, our region was devastated and many people who trusted him are in serious debt and even divorces have occurred because Dr. Yong pushed some Japanese sisters to donate hundreds of thousands even without their husbands knowing it or against their wishes.

Many of our leaders are thinking out loud that if things in the Unification Movement are this highly dysfunctional should this dysfunction be supported or allowed to continue or is it better to it let it collapse to allow something new to take its place. I am sorry to utter such words but I don't see another way. A slow reform at this point in time means a rapid death, I'm afraid.

Inept foreign middle management which has no idea how to plan for the future and is completely unconcerned about members' hearts and families is our present situation. Due to their lack of ability to work with western members and due to their narrow mindedness and personal insecurity, they have created an unhealthy culture of "obedient " followers (yes men) who only pretend to follow and basically suck up to them. This is common knowledge and conversation among most western members, though they may never tell you that. Or maybe they do, I don't know. None of us intended to join a cult such as what we have become led by inept, power hungry Korean Mafioso's.

The only transparency we see is their modus operandi: They try to control western members through an inner circle (usually young Koreans or willing Japanese). If they can't control western members, those western members are simply fired. They have no idea how to work in a pluralistic global world. There may be some exceptions such as Dr. Song [Yong Cheol Song] and Dr. Seuk [Joon Ho Seuk] in Europe. This is not an anti-Korean diatribe. We love those leaders from whatever nation that practice the principles and ethics of our True Parents and True Father.

I love the deep heart of Korea but something happens to these men when they are given absolute power. They think they can manipulate western members "for their own good" through this circle of dysfunctional people that mirror themselves. I say that because some of them have made serious personal mistakes and remain in a trusted position. Western members know this and see that they themselves are not trusted though they have followed True Parents for 35 years but these young, unproven people who waver in their faith are empowered over them. That is as long as they maintain the dysfunction themselves. This is a completely intolerable situation. We don't see any changes coming soon which is very unfortunate since our second generation are becoming aware of the real situation as they are very perceptive.

Our present leader has stayed a total of 4 weeks in 12 months in Australia. He travels who knows where doing who knows what and then comes in briefly for a few days and then barks orders and directions. He is not interested at all in any feedback. He berates us and threatens to fire us in a few months and has managed to alienate all our top leadership and members. There are many people who refuse to come when he speaks because of his crass way of speaking and the lack of foundation heartistically he has with people. He has given a total of 2 Sunday services in Sydney and 1 in Auckland in one year!! He declines to meet our AFP in Australia for some unknown reason. Even though he is in the same building when we have our AFP monthly meeting he has refused to come down even once to meet or even greet them. They notice this and ask me what is wrong. I don't know what to tell them frankly. I have never, in my life, witnessed such an attitude.

When he came to Oceania, he said he had two mortgages that we needed to pay for which came to which amounted to $5,000 US. He then travelled monthly to USA where his family lives once a month which average about $3000 US a month. That is a total of $8,000 US a month. This was double the amount ever paid to any Continental Director in our history and he did this knowing the incredible burden we had financially. The regional finances are now $11,000 in debt a month (of which his and his new Korean assistant is the bulk of). Since the only cushion of regional finances has disappeared, the accountant must use "True Father's Money" (or what is left of it, originally earmarked for Peace Embassies) beginning next month. We have reported this over and over again but Dr. Kim is in denial. He has brought people from Korea here, promised them money but now they will have to fundraise to survive which is illegal given their visa situation. This was another thing we warned him not to do but he again ignored these warnings.

The dysfunction is so rampant that two of his main staff (two Korean second gen) fell with each other 2 months ago and we are dealing with the aftermath of this. I personally warned Dr. Kim that this brother and sister should not go on a trip they planned together to meet "some friend" in Brisbane. Dr. Kim said he saw nothing wrong in their going even though this brother and sister are not matched to each other and both struggling in their faith. This was so obvious to us all but evidently not to Dr. Kim. The present Secretary General, Rev Greg Stone, was also very concerned about it and wrote to Dr. Kim as well. He said to him "if you are so concerned about it, speak to them". But it was too late. They had left with the approval of Dr. Kim, turned off their cell phones for that weekend and then fell with each other. The brother was sent home and now the sister continues to be his secretary. She is suffering tremendously as her role is so public. If this is not dysfunctional leadership, I do not know what is.

Dr. Kim's wife came for a visit in November but we have not seen her since. She does not call anyone or even know our names. True Father said that this is the age of BCF and that each couple should work together. The former Continental Director Dr. Yong kept his family here while he lives in Philippines and travels.

Conclusion

My conclusion is that the present Korean leadership, the Continental Directors, serve no positive function in a managerial role, whatsoever. In the early days the 36 and 72 couples despite all their idiosyncrasies and problems served a very good function in the US as elders. They showed True Father's heart and shared with us stories and insights into his course. I learned so much from them. I still maintain a beautiful relationship with many of them.

But this second tier is completely different. We never heard anything either from Dr. Yong or Dr. Kim about their meetings with True Father. We don't see or feel anything of Father's heart through them. They are like ambitious bureaucrats that are first looking to divide us and wrestle power from us in order to solidify their power base. This is not my personal opinion only but I would say the great majority of leaders and members. Believe me when I say that I am only writing this email because many have asked me to and I feel the situation has come to an unbearable point myself and I fear for the future of our movement.

My respectful suggestion would be that would be better off having approved and capable Korean leaders invited to our region to give a speech about Father's heart or tradition or to pass on the True Children's life style and insight once or twice a year but to continue to have them in such a managing role (kingly role as they understand it) is extremely detrimental to us all and even to them. We all have been following True Parents for 35 to 40 years. Surely with good supervision we could be allowed real ownership. The alternative is not a pleasant one.

Again I apologize for painting a far from rosy picture of our situation, but I feel compelled by conscience to speak on behalf of many of our leaders and members who would find it difficult to express this to you,

I am happy to meet and talk and even pay my own trip to Korea to discuss this with you if need be.

God Bless Your Ministry

Welcoming Remarks:
Yeon Ah Nim

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters! It is always great to see you all. Today it’s a little bit cloudy and windy outside but inside our heart there is still Heavenly Father’s love and comfort. It is always an honor to have you here in this sanctuary and for those who are joining via internet -- wherever you are we are welcoming you as well. Welcome brothers and welcome sisters.

Hyung Jin Nim:

Welcome brothers and sisters! I just want to acknowledge our GOP students here. They are doing a 30 hour fasting condition. They are still middle and high school students and are doing that. They are now in their 26th hour! Let’s encourage them! Let's give them a big round of applause! They are fighting for Unification Church. We have to be proud of who we are. That's so beautiful!

Let’s turn to the Cheon Seong Gyeong. Let me read at page 520. Father says:

“Why do we like the family? Because it provides the foundation on which you can freely exchange love and happiness. Hence, people yearn for their hometown, the place where their parents and siblings lived.”

Brothers and sisters, when we hear these words we should remember that, although many times we feel alone and we live in the present, we are actually connected to our past. We are connected to our grandfather, our parents, to their grandfather and their parents. Through us comes a new history for our children and their children. It is so important that we see that we are the historical makers. We are the fruits of the past. Of course, we have to move beyond that into the age of blessing and open for our descendants a more beautiful future.

Father is asking us here to recall that homeland, the homeland where we once were free when we were young and had a true sense of wellbeing, belonging, a sense of purpose, a sense of true siblinghood and friendship. It is a place where we can truly experience so many different types of love, a place where, when we grow older in age and have children ourselves, we long to see and feel again. That place that True Father is telling us about is our precious family.

Many times in life it may not feel like that hometown. That’s okay. But it IS the place, where, when God is about to call us to be with Him up there, in our final hour, where we can look back and see the beauty of the family, the good times that we had, and maybe the times of challenge that we worked through together and became stronger together. That’s our place. That’s the place where God is teaching us and where He is showing His love for us.

Let’s give it up for our Unification Church family all around the world! (Applause)

Once again, welcome to service, brothers and sisters. We love to see you and want to welcome all of you again. Please let us remember that, when we come here, we are connected to all the brothers and sisters out there. Take a look at them -- they are looking at you. They are all watching us. Did you know that we have over ten thousand people that are tuning in every week? Although we may feel small here, we are in Korea, we are in the Holy Land, let’s remember that there are thousands of brothers and sisters that are here together with us. I want you to feel their heart today. Let us encourage them wherever they are.

We had a letter from a sister in Madrid who is all alone. But she is watching and she sees all of you and is feeling hope and strength again. That is truly amazing. When we come together then we are able to share, and we are able to remember who we are, we remember that we are connected by True Parents -- there is something awesome in that. Let us give it up for all our brothers and sisters all around the world! (Applause)

Yeon Ah Nim's Message:

There is a little restaurant where my husband and I sometimes go to. The shop owner is very nice and friendly. She knows that my husband is a minister because she asked us once. One day, not so far from Easter, she casually mentioned that he must be very busy with Easter coming soon. My husband said: “Actually, I’m a Unification Church minister.” She was a little surprised and asked if he was talking about the church of Rev. Moon. So he said: “Yes, in fact, I’m a SON of Rev. Moon.” So, she was even more surprised. And without hesitation, comfortably, he kept on saying that his father recently published his autobiography, that it was published by an outside company, that it was very easy to read and recommended to read it. She actually was quite open-minded about it. Whenever he has a chance to introduce himself as a Unification Church minister, Hyung Jin Nim is not hesitant or shy about it. He is very proud of it.

We are living in a great age. This is the age that our True Parents' first disciples dreamt of. Yes, it is true, we still have obstacles to overcome but if we continuously are proud of who we are, are proud of our Unification Church identity and develop it, develop our church, then I believe that the world will come and listen to us. They WILL come and WANT to join our church. I believe that!

Brothers and sisters I love you so much and we believe in you. Aju!

Prayer by Rev. Michael Brazil:

Dear Heavenly Father! We thank You so much for this day that You have given to us, that we are alive, that we can gather here from all parts of the world, that brothers and sisters are watching us right now and are with us from all around the world. We are so grateful that we have an incredible family, that wherever we go we have brothers and sisters whom we feel automatically connected to because of our True Parents and because of You.

We pray that You will be with us here today. Please come and join us and feel the spirit, heart and love that is here. How much we want to return to You! How much we want to live a life full of joy and hope, so that we can return that joy to You!

We thank You for the week that You have given to us. We thank You for the week that You already have prepared, knowing that it will be filled with great blessings, great new adventures and filled with challenges, challenges that will make us stronger and better sons and daughters. We want to truly offer ourselves to You today and ask that You help us to open our hearts and minds to receive the wonderful message that You have prepared for us. We most humbly offer all this to You, as brothers and sisters, as blessed central families from around the world. Aju!

Remarks about Prayer by Rev. Hyung Jin Moon:

Brothers and sisters, when Father speaks about how he prays to God, he says, he tries to console Him. So many people always request things from God. But Father says that as Unificationists we understand the trials and tribulations of God. We understand the suffering heart and the pain that He went through. And we understand how much He has longed for this day. Let’s let Him rest. Let’s let Him be at comfort and ease. Let’s not burden Him. Let’s comfort Him.

When we pray like that it requires a lot of strength. There are times that, when we pray, we may actually feel that we need God’s help. We may feel that we give our best to comfort God but we are going through this difficulty and it’s so hard to get through. But, you know, God always has people around us. I’m not only talking about people in the earthly world. I’m also talking about people in the spirit world that are with us.

For me, I know, it is my brother Young Jin hyung. He is one year older than me and he has helped me through so many things. Sometimes I didn’t want to burden the heart of God. Sometimes God was too big and I couldn’t really feel His presence. Then I can lean on my friend, my brother, and I say: “Just help me out a bit here. I need your help and guidance. I need you to be with me through the coming days. I need you to be with my kids. I need you to be with them when they are driving to school and I need you to make sure that the guy on the other side of the street is not crashing into their car.”

I found that our friends, those Abel angels -- that’s what I call them, our Abel good spirits -- can really give us strength and help, at times when we feel that God is somewhat distant, unseen and invisible.

Today I ask you to remember your Abel angel. Remember that person when you think about all the people that have gone to the spirit world. You will know when you close your eyes and think about all those people and you try to sense with your heart, you will know who that person is that has the greatest heartistic relation with you. For me, I know that it is my brother. What we have to know then is that we didn’t choose that relationship, we are merely discovering it. We have to know that God actually prepared that for us. He prepared that person to be with us. Even though they leave they are still with us. And He asks us to rely on them in times that we need to.

What we want to do nowadays in our services is pray for our Abel angel, our Abel brother or Abel sister who is up there. We can say prayers of encouragement but we can also say: “I need your help. I need strength this week. Be with me more closely this week.”

So we want to take this brief prayer time to pray with our Abel angel, just to acknowledge that they are here. We want to acknowledge that they are in our life and helping us. Let’s take this time to pray and give them strength and ask for help if we need it. Let’s take this time to open our hearts to that person that you know that is with you.

Interesting story:

We always like to start with something a little interesting. I heard this little story. Bill was having a little trouble raising his son. You know, the son would not listen to him, giving him trouble, not really paying attention in school. He was really giving him a lot of heartbreak. One day Bill was in the Bible study class. They were discussing the miracles in the Bible and the pastor was there and he was asking the people in the class," What were some of the great miracles in the Bible?" So they were discussing Moses transforming the sticks into snakes, or opening up the Red Sea, parting the Red Sea. Another congregant said, “You know I really think the best part in the Bible is Jesus walking on the water, healing the sick, opening the eyes of those who are blind.”

But Bill heard this whole lecture, and towards the end he got up and said, “You know, all of you are wrong. The greatest miracle in the Bible was when Joshua told his son to stand still and he listened.”

Let’s stand up and do True Parents’ declaration …

Main sermon by Hyung Jin Nim:

Brothers and sisters, I want to talk to you today about being brave in sharing about True Parents. This is a message that I will read every week. True Father has asked us visit Guri, which is one of our training centers here in Korea. We have about a thousand two hundred people from either Japan or Korea that come and listen to the original root Divine Principle. President Yoo is heading that and he is teaching the Principle there. We have time to talk with the members, myself and Kook Jin hyung. Kook Jin hyung, of course, shares with them some messages.

I‘d like actually to share with you all and also tomorrow with our Korean congregation the message we have been talking about. Right now we are in the age of liberation and complete release. This is the age after the coming of heaven. We know that the physical and spiritual world want to fulfill God’s purpose, and we know that True Parents have said that by the year 2013 we are to establish Cheon Il Guk.

But at the first sound of that we asked the question, even in my heart, "What is that?" For example, how are we going to accomplish that? It sounds so impossible. How are we going to establish a nation? No nation would give us permission to set up a nation, and I used to think in various ways how it would look.

What would a nation, when we are talking about Cheon Il Guk, entail? Are we proposing to set up a country with its own autonomous government? You know, we are still very immature at management. That is becoming more transparent, that is becoming more professional. We still have many things that we have to fix and improve.

Are we going to buy an island? Many times we think of Jardim, in South America, where we would do mass migration there. Is that the Cheon Il Guk we are talking about? Many things we have thought about in our own heart. There is one refreshing speaker that I really love when he speaks. He is my brother, so I love him, I love him. He is so refreshing because he is so blunt and honest.

Actually Kook Jin hyung spoke in 2006 at the leaders’ meeting and he asked the question, “How do we make Cheon Il Guk?” Many said we have to buy Mongolia, something like that and set up a nation … maybe ask for approval like the Native Americans that have their own state, their own autonomous government. Maybe that’s what we are going to do, the native Unificationists.

But Kook Jin hyung said, “It’s simple, it’s so simple. Why do you call America a Christian nation? Because the majority of people in America say that they are Christians. So what do we have to do if we want to make a nation in a democratic world? If 50% of the populations are Unificationists, then there is a nation.” (Applause). There’s some clarity!

The first time we heard that we were thinking, “What? What is he talking about? Wait a minute, 50% of the population is a huge group of Unificationists. When we are proud of our faith, when we are growing as a church then we have more and more say in a democratic society. Actually when I heard that, it totally blew me away. I was not even thinking in that direction.

He went on to explain that in the democratic world, in the democratic globalized world, you cannot go about conquering other nations claiming them to be yours. You cannot go about invading other territories. At least, that is not what we are going to do. We are not going to do that, brothers and sisters, right? (Laughter) Let’s be clear about that. We are not going to do that, right?

But in a democratic society we can honestly, we can proudly, we can legally share our tradition. We have freedom of religion in a democratic society. It is that clause that protected us as a young movement that was growing in Korea, Japan, and America. That freedom of religion clause is something that protected our tradition in the beginning. It is the clause that in a democratic society allows us to share our faith. And that is an amazing clause. Father has said [that] in America, because they had the religious freedom clause, that America truly was set up by the hand of God. And this made a lot of sense to me.

The next logical connection would be that our task is to share our faith. But how do we share our faith? We try to witness to people but it doesn’t work. We try to teach Divine Principle but it doesn’t work as well as it used to work like in the 70’s, after the wars, World War I and World War II, when everybody had it in his or her mind.

How do we share? How can we share our faith? We have thousands of religious treaties and texts, complicated works and thesis and papers that explain the exposition of the Divine Principle, that explain the concepts and ideologies there in and all that kind of stuff. We have developed great treatises and explanations about all the great theological traditions. The brilliant theological Divine Principle is very, very complex. It is very theologically advanced.

I had the chance at the Divinity School when I was at Harvard to study different religious texts, and when you compare these religious texts, the other founders‘ religious texts (some of the founders didn’t create religious texts but some of them did), when you see them comparatively, Divine Principle is so systematic. It has a tremendously systematic view of history, a providential course that it applies throughout its texts systematically.

Even my New Testament scholar and New Testament professor at Harvard, a very famous professor, one who is top in his field, and my friend who was a Ph.D. graduate, they used to talk about how advanced the Principle was, that it’s quite an impressive theological text when you look at it theologically.

But the question is: Why can’t we witness? Why do we have such a hard time witnessing? When we look at the evidence, the statistics of our church in Korea, for example, from 1960 to 2005, at the end of the 1960s our church was at 16,000 members, that is people who attended church. In 2005 the church was at 14,000 members.

Even if you are not good at math, you can see what happened. In thirty years we have had a decrease in our church. We have had no church growth; we’ve had negative church growth. So, this is actually the reality of our situation. This is also the case in America. This is not the case in Japan, where we’ve continued to have membership growth but there are other issues in Japan that exist.

So I had a very interesting desire in my heart, how to solve this puzzle. How do we talk about our faith in a way that is relevant, that is meaningful? How do we witness? How do we share our faith? And so I asked the person that I love listening to, Kook Jin hyung, because he is such a good witnesser. My brother Kook Jin hyung has witnessed to Mr. Bang. He was the director in the KCIA, he was a major government official, he was the president of the Korean Hanjin corporation, a construction company and architectural development company.

So he has an incredible career, he has so many contacts, and Kook Jin hyung was able to witness to him. Now he is the vice-chairman in the Tongil Group and he is also our finance minister here at the Headquarters church, helping us with transparent financial and professional management. So, Kook Jin hyung has witnessed to him.

He has also witnessed to company presidents who have now joined our church and who are now tithing community members. He has witnessed to professional lawyers, CPA's that have worked in the big five companies of Korea (Samsung, Deawoo, etc.). These brothers and sisters come to church! Maybe not every week -- they are busy -- but they come, they regularly contribute to the church. Many of the facilities that you see, the café, the facilities that your children enjoy downstairs, the playground, the TV monitors, all that is from them. A lot of their contributions went into rebuilding this church. So in fact we have to feel very thankful to these new brothers and sisters who come in.

So I had the chance to have this conversation with Kook hyung. To make a long story short: I asked, “How do you do it, how do you witness to these people? Here we are in the church, and we are all struggling to share our faith. We bring them to this and that education and they say, 'I can respect Rev. Moon,' and that’s it. And then we have to invite them back, buy them another dinner, and do the same old thing over and over. How do you witness so that they actually become owners, that they become contributing members, investing in our blessed children, investing in our education, investing in our facilities? How do we do it so that they become owners of the church who want to build it, who want to help it succeed? We haven’t been able to get to that stage."

So, I asked him, “Kook Jin hyung, how do you do it?” He said, “It is so simple.” (Laughter) This is what he said to me, “I teach them the Divine Principle in less than a minute.” I said, “What? You teach them the Divine Principle in less than a minute! How do you teach them the Divine Principle in less than a minute? I have studied the theological treaties of our theology. They are so complex. You have to go through the Principle of Creation, the Fall, the Parallels. You have to go through all that. How are you going to do that in less than a minute?" I said, “That’s impossible, that’s crazy!”

He said to me, “True Parents teachings are so profound, so powerful. It actually can be explained in ONE sentence.” I said, “What? You can explain the teachings, the one thousand volumes of True Parents’ teachings in ONE sentence? Are you kidding me? How many speeches have we heard? So many texts, how is that possible?" He said again, “It’s so simple. Our entire teaching, 95% of our entire teaching, is about this, remember this sentence: Inherit the true love of God!” That’s the Principle. If you know that you know the Principle.

And he said, “You know, True Father defines True Love not just as a love that we feel, like a passionate love. True Father defines true love as God’s Essence, as His Divinity. He defines true love as a selfless love that can bring Satan to voluntary surrender. If you inherit that true love then you reach the divine value of God and you become an equal partner. And there in lies the Principle. Of course that does not mean we become almighty, omnipotent and powerful, but in terms of love we share on an equal level."

When I thought about this we had a little discussion. For thousands of years there have been many theologies that have existed, different religions, etc, and most of the time we have understood God to be almighty, omnipotent, the creator of the universe, swirling the planets into existence. And from mankind’s perspective, it’s awesome to worship that kind of deity, that kind of God. He is so powerful. If He can whirl the creation and whirl the cosmos into existence than He can help our child get a B+ on a test or He can help us pay our rent, or He can help us, you know, get a promotion at work. That’s how we can think. It is awesome to worship such a powerful God.

But then he said, “Flip it. Why don’t you think about it from GOD’s perspective? God is almighty, all-powerful, all His children worshiping and praising Him, saying, 'God, help me get that B+ on my paper, or help me get that promotion.' When you think about it from God’s perspective, He is lonely, all alone, almighty and all-powerful... and all alone.

It is very simple: Inherit the true love of God. That is what Adam and Eve had to do, inherit the true love of God, become equal partners and through that establish God’s family, nation, world, cosmos, etc. Because True Parents have revealed that to humankind and have inherited the true love of God, they fulfilled exactly what Adam and Eve were supposed to do. We know that from our faith.

By inheriting God’s true love and not Satan’s false love, which is self-centered and self-serving, they’ve become equal partners to God. Thus we say they liberated God because He’s been lonely, and now He has an equal partner to whom He can speak and with whom He can share His heart. That’s our faith in a nutshell. That’s why they’re the Peace King, that’s why they’re the liberators of God’s heart, and that’s why it is the age of liberation, etc. etc. etc.

So teaching is very simple. When you go to the café here, you see all kinds of quotations of Father, but in the Growth Stage Temple, we’re going to have this all over the place, “Inherit the True Love of God,” because actually when you think about it, inheriting the True Love of God is connected to every single thing in the Principle. If you think about it, from inheriting the True Love of God comes man’s purpose, the purpose of mankind, which is to bring joy to God. Inherit His true love and then bring joy to Him.

From inheriting the True love of God comes the slogan that we know, "One family under God", for if you don’t inherit the True Love of God, you can’t create God’s family. From inheriting the true love of God comes the four great realms of heart that we know, our parents, husband and wife, siblings and children. From inheriting the true love of God come the three kingships of the grandparents, the parents and the children. From inheriting the true love of God comes the four position foundation, on the individual level, family, society, nation, and the world.

And if you look at the Divine Principle, at least the one that’s in the 3-colored sections, the English version is 411 pages long. But 350 plus pages are devoted to the fall and restoration. 340 pages out of 411 pages are dedicated to the Fall and Restoration! If you think about it, the fall is very simple It’s simply inheriting false love, selfish, self-serving love. The process of restoration is the process of preparing a foundation for the one who can come and restore the original human dignity lost by the first ancestors. Simply put, it’s inheriting the true love of God."

So, this is what Kook Jin hyung explained to me. He said, “When I talk to these company presidents, when I talk to these professional people and we have discussions about economics and we talk about politics, at some point they ask what I believe in, 'What do you believe in as Unificationist?' "

And at that point many of us are befuddled. We don’t know how to answer, "What do you believe in as a Unificationist?" "Oh, uh, ah...we believe in...ah...I think...Rev. Moon...some...you know...we believe that he...there is this world peace thing...and there is this interfaith thing we do...there is this political thing we do here..." (Laughter). We don’t know how to answer the question!! How do you answer it? Fast! How do you answer it? Quickly! Less than one minute! Teach them Divine Principle! How do you answer it so quick that it puts right to the core and anything else they hear after that can be connected to it? Very simple! This is what Kook Jin hyung said: “Inherit the true love of God.”

We had a lot of great minds in our tradition, explaining the Principle, explaining a complex text in even more complexity, which is good, theologically. I was a theologian one time, so I understand that world.

But he said: “Look, you have to able to teach it more simply. It’s too complicated. When I’m trying to communicate something I think of a way to make it simpler, so that I can communicate it more quickly. When I have a conversation and suddenly we start talking about what Rev. Moon actually believes, I say that it is quite simple, that he believes in inheriting the true love of God. And he defines true love. He defines it as the essence of God, the divinity of God. That divinity is selfless, and that divinity can bring even the worst evil to a natural surrender. Our task is to inherit that, and if we do that we’re going to create the true love of God on the individual, family, national level. That’s our vision for the world. Simple! Anything from the dual characteristics of God to the purpose of Creation, to the Fall and Restoration, Moses’ course, Jesus’ course, all can be continued and connected back to that ONE teaching, inherit the true love of God."

Brothers and sisters! That is why it’s so important now in this age to remember and acknowledge and understand the value of our True Parents. It’s also now so important for us to share our True Parents with the world and to let other people become filial children of True Parents.

But then you might say, "I try to witness and bring people to the church, and I don’t know what to do next. They come sometimes to this education or that program, and they say, 'It was great', but it didn’t work out so well."

Brothers and sisters, we’re now developing many many new strategies that have worked in the past. This week, we introduced the Ancestral Tree method, which is a witnessing method that has been used in Japan. It’s so important because it opens one's understanding beyond oneself, that you’re tied to your ancestors and you’re also tied to your descendants. It asks us to be responsible. We look at recurring patterns of family trees. A parent might have a child who may be having trouble studying, or having problems working at school and not focusing. We might start condemning that child, without understanding the historical perspective, that our ancestry is connected to this child.

So the Kagyedo method shows through real case examples, that people with issues are connected back. One of the ancestors, for example, the mother-in-law of the parent, wanted to study very greatly, but in that period of time, since she was a woman, was not able to study. She was discriminated against. That resentment continued through to her child. In the Divine Principle we understand that in the indemnity conditions section.

Even this week we had a revival, where we introduced new non-Unificationists to the tradition. We had three different lectures on principle. We also had, after that, our director of the 21 Cheon Bok Center, which is the Heavenly Fortune Center, that is located in the Dowon Bldg. One of our directors there gave brief presentations about the importance of understanding our ancestry in understanding our lives and our children’s lives and their future. Those courses are available for our congregation and for those people who are new to our tradition. So we have a developing witnessing program, an educational program, consultation program.

In our tradition we have Divine Principle lectures but the timing is very important. Sharing the Diving Principle is very empowering and it’s very powerful, but if the person is not able to digest it, then they can’t understand its value. So in our case, many of our brothers and sisters have brought new people to church who, when you try to bring them back, say, “I’m busy this weekend,” this kind of thing.

But now there’s a clear second step. Bring them to church, get them connected, and treat them as a brother or a sister, but then they also start learning, not just Divine Principle, but about their own lives in connection to providence. So the 21 Cheon Bok Center is open to all of our brothers and sisters to understand what’s happening with this new witnessing program. We definitely want to encourage you all to check it out, and you can register and see what’s happening there. We had about 15 new people come the day before, from all around the area. We had one of the owners of the restaurant near here that came to church. They really enjoyed it. They not only listened to the principle, but they also learned how that applies to their lives directly, to their past and their future.

So we have these various things that are improving in our church. And if you think about it, and look at any nation where there’s a Unification Church, there’s no situation in the world right now better than our Korean Unification Church situation. In the last year we’ve had over 85 articles in all the medial outlets in Korea, on the TV, newspaper, internet etc, and all of them without exception have been positive about the changes happening in our movement. Let’s give it up for Unification Church.

We have now the autobiography of our True Parents, which is a national bestseller. It was the number one best seller in Pusan. Let’s give it up for True Parents. We have a whole new church leadership. We have professionals who have been extremely successful outside, who are now in our teams, in our church leadership. We have a more accountable and transparent church. Every two months we give transparent accounting, so our finance minister Bang will tell the congregation every single thing about what the church is doing and will show the financial statements, because he’s a professional at that. We’ve had elections to elect leaders into leadership, first time -- that's a big change -- and we had elections to elect women into leadership. That’s a huge change in our church!

Nationwide -- last year -- we’ve had Unification Church attendance rise for the very first time in over 30 years. We’ve had an increase in church attendance, in tithing, and we have had an increase in ownership, people who really feel, “I’m going to invest. I’m going to make this succeed.”

We have to be proud of who we are, proud of our faith. It’s a free democratic country, and we can share our tradition. When you share your tradition, you’re not doing anything wrong. You don’t have to feel guilty about sharing your faith. And when we do that with confidence, it starts to show.

Now, because of the CBG providence, we’re moving into the growth stage CBG, right here in the holy land, in the capital city, in the soul of the Holy Land. But it’s the same thing. We’re going to be tested there, and I’ll tell you how. The question is, "Can we actually move the Holy Land and the world to come to acknowledge and believe in True Parents? Can we do it?"

We are still being persecuted. I was just talking to the director of our music team. She has an incredible career. She graduated from Berkeley Music School in the States, from where she came back. She is a professional producer. Together with her brother she has her own studio. She is a very talented young second generation. Recently, she was contacted by an upcoming movie, to be the musical director of that movie.

We were all excited about that, and we encouraged her. We want her to develop her professional career. She went in to sign the contract, and the president came in and said, “Why don’t you sit down. You know, I’m a very devout Christian. I didn’t know that you were a Unificationist." When he didn’t know that she was a Unificationist, he enjoyed her music very much. But then he said, "Because of that, I don’t think I can work with you.” Another example of religious discrimination, religious persecution.

Another blessed child, a certified CPA, works in our office here. He told us that his high school friends from twenty years, who are all professionals in different fields, asked him where he is working. When he said, “I’m working in the church, trying to build it up,” they said, “I could TOLERATE you being a Unificationist, but I really don’t want to continue this relationship because you are working in the church.” So although this is the best situation in all the churches that we have in the world, right now, we’re still being persecuted.

In the Old Testament period we know that people of Israel had to enter into Canaan. They had to defeat the kings of Canaan. They had to turn the temporary tabernacle into a permanent temple for God, which would be a foundation to receive the Messiah, and then the foundation from which the Messiah would work to the world. That’s what’s happening with the growth stage CBG. That’s going to be the foundation for the perfection-level CBG. That’s where we’re going to be able to preach True Parents’ message to the world. That’s where we’re going to be able to stand as Unificationists, that’s where we’re going to be able to speak and declare our faith.

But again, we’re going to have opposition. We’re going to have people who discriminate against us for believing what we believe. It’s important for us to be confident in who we are. And it’s important for us to be confident and to believe in ourselves and in the tradition we’re from and to believe that we have amazing things to offer to the world. If we don’t have that confidence we will not be able to witness.

The reason why Kook Jin hyung is able to witness so well is that he’s a real professional. He is accomplished in whatever he does. People already respect him. He tells them, “Yes, I’m a Unificationist, and I’m proud of it. The things that I’ve learned made me and helped me succeed.” So that’s even more important. The people he has witnessed see that he is a professional person. They see that he’s talented and that he has cultivated himself to be all that he can be. And on top of that he’s proud of who he is. He’s proud of whose he is, and he’s proud of the Unification tradition. Let’s give it up for the Unification Church, brothers and sisters.

So now is our time as Unificationists. But we will not be able to win over the challenges of this time by the old methods. Because we were so persecuted we had to withdraw into our movement. We were being attacked from every side. If you hear stories about the early days, my God! They were totally persecuted. People were throwing rocks and beating them because they were Unificationists.

But don’t think such things happened only 40 years ago. We had one blessed young sister, she was basically surrounded by four young Christians that were her friends, and they mobbed her and persecuted her and said, “If you go to the Unification Church you’ll go to hell!” Let’s not think that this was only 40 years ago. This exists today.

It’s important for us to be proud of who we are. If we don’t stand true to who we are, nobody will defend us. Nobody will be proud of who we are. It is important for us to show confidence in who we are, believed in who we are, and help our movement succeed.

When I heard these stories that have just recently happened, even though there’s so much change, I said, “No more! I’m sick and tired of being bullied. No more!” We’re going to be proud of the Unification Church. We’re going to be compassionate. We’re going to practice true love and inherit God’s true love, and we’re going to grow this church, and we’re going to be successful. We’re going to speak True Parents’ message to the nation and we’re going to speak it to the world. It is now the Unification .Church’s time, and let’s give it up once again for the Unification Church brothers and sisters! It is now our time. I’m tired of being bullied.

I do believe that if we go forth with that kind of confidence, if we go forth with strength in our faith, if we go forth with understanding -- our teaching is actually quite simple, and we can teach it quickly -- if we’re proud of our teaching, and proud of what we believe, and we share that with confidence and are good and excellent in whatever we do, we’ll find ourselves with more victory, more illumination and more peace, and we’ll live that blessed life that True Parents have blessed us to live. Let’s give it up for God and True Parents.

Final Prayer by Hyung Jin Nim:

Heavenly Father, thank You so much for being with us today. We want to declare that we are Unificationists. We are not going to be scared anymore of who we are. We are not going to feel guilty when we share our faith, thinking we are doing something wrong or that it is unpopular. We are going to be proud of who we are.

We, on the ground, live our lives, we take our children to school, we try to work with other people and at times our brothers and sisters, we, are persecuted and discriminated against, for what we believe. We know it’s so easy to just say: “Alright, then I won’t talk about what I believe!” But, Father, let us be skillful, let us be wise. Let us not be foolish and walk around with loud speakers and try to create havoc and chaos. Father, let us be wise, proud and passionate of who we are.

When we are challenged and when we are being discriminated against, let us not strike back and act foolishly, childishly and emotionally. But let us do as Jesus did, as Martin Luther King did, as True Father did his entire life. Let us say: “You may strike me now but you will not win in the end. You have the losing strategy in striking us. But we have the winning strategy in trying and living to inherit God’s true love.” Let us be proud of who we are and what we are here to do.

We pray that You may be with each and every one of our brothers and sisters here today. Give them strength and faith. Give them life in their walk with You and let us realize that we are not alone. We have angels and brothers and sisters that are with us. They are walking together in this life of faith with us. Let us know today that we can be proud of who we are. We can be proud in sharing True Parents and in sharing our faith. We can be proud of ourselves as Unificationists.

Let us know that we are relevant and that it IS our time. You prepared so much and we are ready. We are ready now not to be bullied anymore. But we are not going to fight the bully with fists. We will fight them with true love.

We thank You so much for giving us this day, where You challenge us once again to see ourselves in a new light. We pray that You may fill our hearts today, be with us this coming week and send those Abel angels to be with us, protect us and protect our children. We want to pray for them right now. We want to pray that they are empowered and rejuvenated, that they don’t get tired. We pray that they are also spiritually rejuvenated.

Thank You for preparing this wonderful time together. We pray that we can truly move forward to bring our tradition to the world stage, to be relevant and to offer Cheon Il Guk to You.

We pray this in our own names as blessed central families, as one. Aju!
